Asthma is called swas roga, in Ayurveda. It is disease causing inflammation or
obstruction in the respiratory passage.The airways in the lungs become
narrower causing excess mucous.

Different types of Asthma
According to Charaka Samhita there are 5 types of swasas: Mahashwas,
urdhwashwas, chinashwas, tamakshwas, and kshudrashwas.
The first three are not curable, tamakshwas can be controlled and ksudrashwas
is curable.

Ayurveda texts say that root cause of asthma is due to poor digestion.
Poor digestion helps in the buildup of toxins in the body and they are carried
into the lungs and chest area causing harm to the epithelial lining of airways.
As a result cells are not nourished and waste starts accumulating in them
destroying the natural defense system of the body by blocking the circulation of
air.This results in asthmatic condition.

Aggravation of Kapha dosha and vata dosha creates such conditions.
Vata one of the tridoshas gets aggravated and moves into the respiratory
channels and aggravates kapha, causing obstruction in the respiratory passage.
This condition is called `pranavaha srotasa `.
This produces breathlessness, cough, running nose, loss of appetite, pain in the
head, neck, and chest, forceful bouts of respiration.

Purification therapy (panchakarma) – It is pre refinement therapy to open the
blood flow channels, relax the toxins and prepare the body to eject wastes.
Oleation therapy (snehana) – It includes both external and internal forms of oil

– Honey with equal parts of black resins, pippali, dates help

Spinach, celery, garlic, ajwain, salmon fish, figs, cinnamon, drumstick leaves,
bitter gourd, safflower seeds, onions can help prevent asthmatic attacks.
– Go on a holiday for relaxation. Good sleep is very important. Use
of strong perfumes, chemicals in the form of room fresheners should be
avoided. Avoid outdoor activities early in the morning. Tobacco and smoking
should be given up. Easy and light meals should be taken.
