This is the first part of my lecture series on the Middle Ages, beginning with the Fall of Rome and the establishment of the Frankish Kingdom in Western Europe. Although Charlemagne ruled a large empire at the turn of the 9th century, this did not last and Europe was held together by a collection of lord/vassal contracts that historians refer to as "feudalism." The lecture concludes with an analysis of the medieval warrior culture of chivalry. For more instructional materials, visit my website: http://www.tomrichey.net
