Your résumé makes an important impression
that can determine whether you’ll be invited to
interview with a company. Follow these tips to
ensure that you create a powerful document
that showcases your IT experience, skills, and
strengths in the best way possible.
WHEN WRITING YOUR RÉSUMÉ:
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING
GUIDELINES
For example, if the following keywords appear in the job posting:
• Prototype development • Team management • Collaboration • Process improvement
Then, a statement on your résumé might be:
Experience with effective prototype development and efficient
team management to facilitate interdepartmental collaboration,
resulting in measurable process improvement
Chronological résumé: lists previous
work history with the most recent position
first; skills and accomplishments follow
Best for: professionals with a robust,
constant work history
Functional résumé: lists skills and
accomplishments first, putting less
emphasis on previous positions and
dates of employment
Best for: entry-level candidates,
those switching careers, those with
gaps in work history, and those who
have held numerous temporary/
contract positions
Keep the design simple and
professional. You want the hiring
manager to focus on your content
and not be distracted by it being
difficult to read.
Proofread. Check your résumé
multiple times for accuracy,
grammar, and spelling. Have
friends review it, too.
Create multiple formats. Make
sure that you have multiple
versions of your résumé ready,
including a Microsoft®
Word file, a
PDF, and a plain text version.
Writing a résumé that is a clear, accurate portrayal of

previous employers

Omit personal pronouns;
use action words instead
