Shirodhara
• Shiro‐Dhara is a process of pouring the medicinal fluid on
the head methodically and rhythmically.
• Shirodhara is a variety of Snigdha and Drava Sweda called
as Parisheka, Parisechana, Sechana or Seka when it is done
on on head.
• The liquid material is poured with one hand at specific
height of 3‐4 inches oscillating and simultaneously
massaging with another hand.
• For Shirodhara not only Takra or Taila even Kwatha, Ghruta,
Ikshurasa, Sthnya, etc are used as Dhara materials. y
• Most of the time the Shorodhara is done as Moordhnidhara
but for few diseases a real Shirodhara on the scalp is
necessary.y

• Treatment consisted of Shirobasti (therapeutic retention of medicament over the
scalp) in male patients and Shirodhara (pouring of a steady stream of medicament
on the forehead) in female patients with Dhanvantaram tailam (medicated oil) for
45 minutes daily followed by Abhyanga (methodical massage) with Dhanvantaram

from a single outlet. The Shirodhara dripping oil was standardized as per

jatamansi (Jatamansi), and Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) in a

• When a constant stream of any liquid is poured over

on the skin over the forehead. This pressure stimulates

present on the skin, which in turn lead to mechanical

is passed to the cerebral cortex via brain stem or the

• Shirodhara produce a constant pressure and vibration
which is amplified by hollow sinus present in frontal bone.
The vibration is then transmitted inwards through the fluid
medium of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This vibration along

thalamus and the basal fore brain which then brings the
amount of serotonin and catecholamine to the normal
