Miss Emily Collective Voice
Miss Emily's story is certainly bizarre, suspenseful, and mysterious enough to engage the reader's
attention fully For example, her affair with Homer Barron may be seen as a middle–aged woman's
belated rebellion against her repressive father and against the town's burdensome expectations. That
William Faulkner intended her story to have a much larger dimension is suggested by his choice of
an unnamed citizen of Jefferson to tell it. Faulkner never speaks or writes as an individual, never
uses the pronoun "I," always speaks as "we." As representative of the townspeople, Faulkner feels a
compulsion to tell the story of a woman who represents something important to the community.
Black voices are excluded from this collective voice as it speaks out of old and new generations.
Even though Miss Emily was a child during the Civil War, she ... Show more content on

She is a visible holdover into the modern South of a bygone era of romance, chivalry, and the Lost
Cause. Early, the narrator invokes such concepts as tradition, duty, hereditary obligation, and
custom, suggesting a continuation of idea in the community consciousness of those old values. The
community's sense of time is mostly for the most part a record of events starting with the earliest
and following the order in which the events occurred, but it is also like Emily's, the confused,
psychological time sense of memory. Like many women of the defeated upper class in the Deep
South, Miss Emily withdraws from the earliest time of reality into the timelessness of illusion.
Immediately after Faulkner refers to Miss Emily as being like an "idol" and to her great–aunt

Miss Emily Is An Alien
Since Homer admitted his relation to men, the women of the town have sprung in curiosity for
Emily's reaction. The town has begun to say once more, " Poor Emily"; although, the children say:
"Miss Emily was an alien." This bizarre issue was difficult to process, and some believed the theory
the children spoke about repeatedly. Most of the town paid no mind to the children's thoughts;
therefore, they carried on gossiping. Emily slowly vanished once more; consequently, Homer
disappeared, not giving her a reason to make an appearance. In consternation, the people attentively
engaged themselves in the children's stories, even though they sounded obscure to the human mind.
The children commenced their hypothesis, however, the story was suddenly interrupted by Miss
Emily's servant, "You fools! Miss Emily was no alien. Let me tell you the real story." The shock on
everyone's face brought them to the abrupt thought of intrigue. His crusty old voice shook as his
figure bent in years of labor, "I first started observing her everyday behaviors as they gradually
became petrifying. Miss Emily had a great attachment to Homer. One in which, she would have
done anything to have his affection back. I would hear screams coming from across the hall as I
cooked her dinner." Everyone was in dismay of his story, but would not dare move an inch for they
desired to listen. The old man continued on his speech by saying, "She planned for a wedding and I
helped prepare it. We started off with dinner,

Miss Emily Loss Of Power
Through Miss Emily, Faulkner conveys his perspective on the drastic changes the south went
through post Civil War. Miss Emily is displayed in many forms that include her attitude, behavior,
and physical image. She is depicted as a crazed, lonely woman who never came out of her house.
Such descriptions gives us reasoning to believe that Miss Emily represented the South's loss of
power. Miss Emily gives us a personal aspect of the conflicts the South encountered. She was
perceived as a powerless, secluded, lady who never interacted with anyone, and never abandoned
her house. We are presented with Miss Emily's stern stubborn attitude once she was faced with the
claims of her unpaid taxes. Miss Emily on several occasions presents herself with an attitude in
which we begin to interpret as a defense mechanism in which she defies all sense of responsibility
as she assumes she is above the law or old southern hospitality. This is the literal representation of
the South and it's loss of control and how they denied it to be true. ... Show more content on

However, Miss Emily is very reserved from the rest of her community. The interpretation of her
behavior symbolizes the difference in behavior once the South and North are compared. The South
in this time period was known for its conservative behavior whereas the North had a liberal state.. In
a Rose for Emily, this reserved lady gives us an aspects of the unwillingness to change and their
straitlaced attitude. Miss Emily's behavior is a representation of the South's incapability to accept

Character Analysis Of Miss Emily Grierson
Upon reading "A Rose for Emily," penned by William Faulkner, one discovers several colorful
characters, including one Miss Emily Grierson, who may be best described as a wilting violet in a
time capsule. As the daughter of a colonel who was once the respected town mayor, Miss Emily met
a much different fate than one might have expected of someone with such a high societal status. In
keeping with the idea that humans are flawed beings, a tragic hero is often described as an
individual with immense potential who meets a horrific end due to flaws within themselves, and the
main character in Faulkner's short story undeniably meets these criteria. In William Faulkner's "A
Rose for Emily," Miss Emily Grierson suffers an unfortunate fate due to her lack of willingness to
evolve as the times changed, her intense need to keep up appearances, and her withdrawal from
society which leads readers to accept her as a tragic hero.
Throughout the course of the story, it becomes evident to readers that Miss Emily lived her life as
though time was on pause, and nothing was allowed to be altered within the confines of her reality;
in regard to this realization, one notes that this is where she first began her long fall down the well.
In retrospect, she held fast to the days when she fancied herself a symbol of the flourishing south
and became stationary in an antiquated period of life when the times began to change. She made it
known that she wanted no part of change, and she never chose to

Miss Emily Kills Homer Barren
Miss Emily kills Homer Barren (H.B) because the combination of the death of her controlling father,

Southern Gothic short story by William Faulkner often the narrator addresses the protagonist as
Miss Emily, which infers that the narrator is someone that cares for her; for example, a potential
lover that her father ran away or Tobe Miss Emily's domestic. Evidence within the text gives clues
why and how Homer Barron murder.
What could lead a woman born of high status to break mentally? One factor that contributed to
Emily Grierson mind breaking is her lifelong dominance by her father. The narrator gives evidence

Diagnosing Miss Emily in William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily
In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily there is more than enough evidence to determine that Miss
Emily is mentally ill. Most of the clues and hints are subtle, but when they are all pieced together
the puzzle becomes clear. Not saying it is clear as too what Miss Emily was suffering from, the only
way to know that for certain would be if the author or narrator told us in the text. We can conclude,
however, she was suffering from some form of mental illness. Miss Emily was seen as a recluse and
odd, but what no one in the town knew was that she couldn't help it there was more going on with
her then people could see.
By the story's conclusion, the reader can go back through the story and identify many episodes

When Miss Emily refuses to respond to a government letter regarding her taxes the Board of
Alderman comes to visit her. When she comes in she is cold to the gentlemen, showing her lack of
social skills which in many cases is a factor in mental Illness. Also before Miss Emily makes the
guests leave she tells the, that if they still think she has taxes they need to "see Colonel Sartoris,"
(Faulkner 149) who has been dead ten years. This statement by Miss Emily could be seen as her
minds unwillingness to live in the present. Her mind belives what it wants which is also the case
after her fathers death. We see in the book that after her father's death and her subsequent
breakdown, Miss Emily was "sick for a long time." This could mean the state that Miss Emily
refused to believe her father was gone. Right after the death of her father, the ladies of the town
come to Miss Emily's home to offer their condolences, and they observe that she had "no trace of
grief on her face" (Faulkner 151). The inability to either feel or demonstrate appropriate emotion, is
a classic symptom of mental illness. More explicitly, Miss Emily insisted to the visitors that "her
father was not dead" (Faulkner 151). For this reason, Miss Emily would not let anyone remove her
father's body until three days after her father should have been buried. Finally the third day "she
broke down" and let the townspeople remove the body quickly

Miss Emily Pompous
In "A Rose for Emily" written by William Faulkner, a story is told about a woman and her
disturbingly interesting life. Emily is a woman who is respected. Along with respect, the
townspeople are also very curious of Miss Emily's secretive lifestyle. Through many tales told about
her life the readers discover that Miss Emily has many strange things that she does. MIss Emily
refuses to pay taxes, tries to keep her dead father's body, is thought to have married a man that
disappeared and lets her beautiful house go to ruin. Although Miss Emily's family used to be revered
after her father passed away, the town started to believe that Miss Emily was pompous. All of these
things contribute to the odd way Miss Emily is thought of. From the beginning of the story to the
very end Miss Emily is portrayed in a way that made her seem pretentious and hateful. For most of
her life she has been raised up to know that she was above everyone else in the town, or that is what
her family believes. Their family has always been well respected because of their wealth and social
positioning. Along with Colonel Sartoris's, a very important political figure in the town, help a story
was made that Miss Emily did not have to pay taxes because of a debt of the town to her family. He
even made the story to where even Miss Emily believed it. This makes Miss ... Show more content

about it. When the men go to her house, Miss Emily bluntly tells them, "See Colonel Sartoris. I have
no taxes in Jefferson." This shows that Miss Emily is hateful and and very stubborn, especially
because Colonel Sartoris had been dead for many

Isolation In Emily Grierson's Death Of Miss Emily
Additionally, because of Miss Emily Grierson isolation from the community by her totalitarian of a
father and as a result, she is basically disconnected from the society, in which she is supposed to
have been in contact with or socially connected. Moreover, the result of her father's death causes
Miss Emily to refuse to acknowledge his death for three days. However, after the townspeople
intervene and buried her father, it seems that Miss Emily is isolating herself by an obscure illness,
perhaps a mental breakdown, therefore, in order for Miss Emily to keep herself sane, she finds
herself remembering only the past, creating her own reality, causing herself and others to follow.
Likewise, Miss Emily lives in an abiding void causing her to create

Miss Emily In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily
By examining Miss Emily's behavior and her social relationships, it is possible to diagnose Miss
Emily with mental illnesses: PTSD and schizophrenia. Miss Emily Grierson, the main character in
"A Rose for Emily," written by William Faulkner, is a strange character. Miss Emily's unpredictable
and idiosyncratic behavior is bizarre, and the reader, like the townspeople in the story, was left
wondering how to explain the fact that Miss Emily has spent years living and sleeping with the
corpse of Homer Barron. On page 772, the whole town went to Miss Emily's funeral when she died.
"The men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of

Schizophrenia may result in hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and
behavior that impairs daily functioning. It is a chronic condition, requiring lifelong treatment. It is
unknown of what causes schizophrenia, but researchers believe that genetics, brain chemistry and
environment contributes to development of the disorder. (Mayo Clinic)
Miss Emily could also have schizophrenia as a response to the demanding conditions in which she
was living as a Southern woman from an aristocratic family. Miss Emily decompensated because
she was unable to develop healthy and adaptive coping and defense mechanisms. When her father
dies, Miss Emily avoids all contact with others and other psychotic symptoms become evident.
Immediately after her father's death, ladies from the town came to Miss Emily's home to offer
condolences and aid, and observe that she had "no trace of grief on her face" (pg. 775). Perhaps,
Miss Emily insisted to the visitors that "her father was not dead" (pg. 775).
In conclusion, William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is a short story that is, a tale of the pressures
of society and the ways in which they can wear people down. Miss Emily lacked adaptive coping
skills to help her maintain stressors, and for this reason, she was starting to have mental

A Rose for Miss Emily
Faulkner guides us through his short story "A Rose for Miss Emily", with his own unique form of
third person limited narration. This narration allows the audience to follow the opinions of the
narrator and develop the mindset the author desires his audience to have. Specifically, William's
choice to begin the story with the description of Emily's funeral gives the reader a sort of inherent
sympathy for Miss Emily, which we, the readers, naturally carry through the story as we build our
opinion of Emily. Faulkner then continues to build shape our opinion of Emily through the
metaphorical comparison of her with a "Fallen Monument." Such a comparison unsurprisingly leads
the reader to think of Miss Emily as some sort of tarnished noble, or ... Show more content on

Faulkner's narrative choice to present this incident at the beginning of the story allows the audience
to intertwine their feelings of sympathy for Miss Emily with those of the distaste on would feel in
for someone who treated them as she treated her guests. Additionally the reader becomes more
observant of the tone and attitude Miss Emily has towards other people. This short, cold ability to
intimidate people into doing as she wishes is something that continually developed as she became
older. Furthermore, when this was combined with her status as a "high and mighty Grierson" (page
392 Norton) the townspeople never seemed to be able to confront her about any sort of
insubordination she was the source of. The smell, being the first of these annoyances she created,
was met with inability on part of the town's people to decide exactly what to do about the situation.
The first complaint of it came in the form of gossip, like much of the discussion of Miss Emily did.
This finally progressed to a complaint to the judge, who admitted to having no idea as to what
course of action to take but agreed to ask about it. This obviously did nothing because two more
complaints came in the very next day, further showing the cowardice the townspeople show in the
face of one secluded old lady. This situation is resolved by four men sneaking onto her property
"like burglars" (page 393 Norton) and sprinkling lime in her basement. This shows the supremacy

Miss Emily Symbolism
In "A Rose for Emily," William Faulkner depicts the rather odd life of Miss Emily Grierson. From
the point of view of Emily's hometown, she is depicted as extremely stubborn. Emily was cut off
from the world by her father, and as such has misunderstandings about how to develop any
meaningful relationships. Because he sent her pursuers away, she becomes overly dependent on her
father and is distraught at his passing. She lives in the past, unable to process loss. Emily refuses to
accept change as seen through the condition of her house and her unwillingness to pay taxes. Due to
Miss Emily's lack of love in her life, she becomes stuck in her ways and in some ways is a physical
representation of the American South. The American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Grierson's passing. The dust in room is the regrets and sour memories that permanently cover the
house. The layers of dust imply that there are many secrets about Miss Emily and about what is
contained in her house. Faulkner then writes, "On a tarnished gilt easel before the fireplace stood a
crayon portrait of Miss Emily's father" (Faulkner). The painting shows how even years after his
death Mr. Grierson still influences how Emily lives and acts. In the story, taxes symbolize death.
The death of her father can be symbolized by the cancellation of Miss Emily's taxes. It also
symbolizes Mr. Grierson's control, even from the grave, over Miss Emily. Upon her father's death
the mayor at the time created an elaborate story to protect Miss Emily from having to pay taxes.
This lie was created due to chivalry and sexism. It is chivalrous as the cancellation of her taxes
allows her to continue to live in her father's house. It was sexist because it was impossible for Miss
Emily to work and financially support herself. "When the next generation...became mayors and
aldermen, this arrangement created some dissatisfaction," taxes once again symbolize death, but this
time of an older way of life (Faulkner). By showing up to claim her taxes, the town folks are
informing her that her role has changed; she is no longer helpless and needs to pay the IRS just like
any other citizen. Miss Emily, of course, keeps modern ideas from

Miss Emily Questions
In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," the elderly woman is mysterious, suspicious, and a
murderer. Throughout the story the narrator talks a little about Emily's back story but the narrator
does go as far as telling about her child hood growing up but instead talks about her life from the
time she is a young adult until she is an elder. We start to see that there are some unanswered
questions throughout the entire story, and even with the surprise ending it still leaves us with a lot of
questions that need to be answered. Since the narrator didn't give that much of a backstory regarding
Miss Emily, we must come up with theories and conclusions to answer our own questions. First, we
see that Miss Emily is mysterious even from the very beginning because the narrator talks about
how her house used to be, "white, decorated with cupolas, and spires, and scrolled balconies". By
the way the narrator describes her house it seems that it used to be very beautiful and full of life, but
now the, "garages and cotton gins had encroached and obliterated". The narrator mentions in the
story is that Miss Emily had a manservant; we start to ask ourselves the question that if she has a
servant to wait on her hand and foot than how could she let her house get in such a bad shape like
that when she could have asked her servant to keep the house tidy since she is too old to do it
herself. Another thing that is mysterious is that the narrator mentions that she hardly ever leaves her

Analysis Of Miss Emily Grieson In A Rose For Emily
Miss Emily Grieson, a character in William Faulkner's short story, "A Rose for Emily" was true a
southern belle, steeped in southern traditions, although the town was changing all around her. She
was "a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town, dating [back to]
1894" (Chapter 1). This southern belle spent her first 40 years living an aristocratic, wealthy
lifestyle. Miss Emily lived in a southern mansion with her father, but during her late 30's her father
died, leaving her alone. Shortly after her father's death, Miss Emily began to openly court "Homer
Barron, a Yankee" (Chapter 3). After their brief romance, Homer left town and the southern belle
didn't come out of her house for years. When Miss Emily died, a few men from town breached her
home. Inside they find a mysterious and dust–ridden mansion. The men are shocked to find Homer's
body, in a locked room, lying on a bed, under several years of dust. On the pillow next to Homer
was a recent impression of a head. In that impression they found one strand of long gray hair, which
most likely belonged to Miss Emily. Her secret shocked the town. For years she had lived her life
"above" the townspeople. However, her death revealed an eternal truth: we are all equal and we will
all one–day return to the dust. Faulkner uses the illusion of dust as the great equalizer, a symbol of
the crumbling decline of Miss Emily's aristocratic life style and the traditions of the old south. This

Miss Emily Grierson In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily
Left open to interpretation, William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," tells the remarkable story of
Miss Emily Grierson whose life and death, particularly her funeral, drew the attention of her town.
Throughout the story, respectability, and the loss of it is presented as the central theme. Faulkner's
elaborate use of setting coupled with characterization foreshadows and creates suspense and his use
of metaphors help guide the reader to the climax of the story, Miss Grierson's bittersweet ending.

flashbacks of her adolescence all the while hinting at the demise of a woman and the past she
personifies. Using setting, characterization, and theme to move ... Show more content on

The house is situated on what was once considered "the prominent neighborhood" but has since
deteriorated like that of the life and physical appearance of Miss Grierson and portrays the values of
the old southern generation and the young newer generation clashing. "It was a big, squarish frame
house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the
heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street." (144)
Unlike previous years when both she and her family were considered important and historic figures
among the townspeople and admired for the lavish life they led, she like her home are now
perceived as "an eyesore among eyesores" (144). "But garages and cotton gins had encroached and
obliterated even the august names of that neighborhood; only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its
stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps. (144) Sadly, like
her home, time has taken its toll on Miss Grierson as well, transforming her from that of a slender
figure in white (146) to a small, fat woman in black with a gold chain descending to her waist...and
her eyes, lost in her fatty ridges of her face. (145) Stuck in her antebellum ways, "A Rose for

The Passage Of Time In William Faulkner's Miss Emily
Memories are an ability of the mind to store, retain, and recall data, information, and details from
the past. They can be extremely vivid, but we also tend to lose them as we age. It's common for
humans to struggle to grasp and hold onto their memories for however long we can. Memories are
part of an individual's identity and can encase the reasons for their upbringing, their relationships,
and their emotions. In this story, Emily resists the passage of time (West 527). The story is written in
a way that seems scattered and out of order, making it harder to follow but allowing for a lot of
foreshadowing. Through the 5 sections, new characteristics are revealed about the mysterious plot
line, as well as the peculiar Miss Emily. Time and memories go hand in hand, and William
Faulkner's Miss Emily fully displays what happens when a person cannot cope with the passage of
time. The speaker provides many ways to explore this, such as the relationship between Miss Emily
and her father, Mr. Grierson, Homer Barron, and how Emily copes with the aftermath of Homer's
death. (this last sentence doesn't flow. I think you can make it two sentences.) Faulkner starts to
illustrate the power of memories and creates the relationship Emily has with her father. This really
shows us some background into her character and into why she appears to have some attachment
issues. Emily's father is extremely controlling. He comes off to be very imminent in Emily's life
even after his death, probably

Miss Emily Psychological Disorder
The death of Miss Emily's father caused her to become emotionally distressed over losing someone
she loved. Looking at the psychological point of view and the symptoms it is possible that Miss
Emily due to her desire to possess an unresisting partner, wanting to be reunited with someone who
passed away, fear of rejection, emotional disorders and poor self esteem, was a necrophiliac, a
disorder in which a person has sexual relations with a corpse (Griffiths 1).
Emily became attracted to Homer Barron and refused to lose him. Sixty eight percent of
necrophiliacs stated that they wanted to be with an unresisting partner (Griffiths 1). William

Fear of rejection is a popular fear but it can affect people in different ways just like it did to Emily.
Necrophiliacs may have a fear of rejection and wish for a partner who cannot reject them (Griffiths
2). Being rejected and left behind multiple times increases the fear, Emily was deserted by who she
thought was her true love. Faulkner mentions, "...a short time after her sweetheart––the one we
believed would marry her––had deserted her" (97). After this happened, Miss Emily's emotions had
to be distressed which follows into how necrophilia is caused by emotional disorders as well. Due to
several different feelings it is not surprising that necrophiliacs can have an increase in emotional
disorders (Griffiths 2). Emily faced a traumatic death of her father which sparked her actions to
spiral out of control. "She told them that her father was not dead. She did that for three days...." (98).
She refused to accept her father's death, and she kept his dead body in the house until she finally
broke down and handed it over. Due to her unbalanced emotions, Miss Emily began to lose self–
esteem. Due to consistent failure and over excessive attatchments necrophiliacs can have a decrease
in self–esteem (Griffiths 2). She struggled to build relationships and find love. "So when she got to
be thirty and was still single..."(97). Emily was to the age where she wanted to have a partner and
was tired of living life alone, but with the loss of her father and the abandonment of her true love,

Dust In Miss Emily
(Last) In Miss Emily's home, everything seemed as if it was frozen in time. With sheer layers of dust
and cracked leather couches, it is evident that nothing has been touched by anyone. When Miss
Emily comes into the room in Part 1 she is described as have a "thin gold chain descending to her
waist and vanishing into her belt," and it is later revealed that it is a clocked hidden away from sight.
Though it is a small detail, it explains how Miss Emily is shying away from time. When the
townspeople open the room Homer Barron was in, everything in the room is untouched. Within this
bridal tomb were tarnished men's toiletries and attire, that when removed left behind an indentation
amongst the dust. When the narrator describes Homer Barron he says, "What was left of him, rotted
beneath what was left of the nightshirt, had become inextricable from the bed in which he lay; and
upon him and upon the pillow beside him lay that even coating of the patient and binding dust." The
narrator also says, "The body had apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace, but now the
long sleep that outlasts love, that conquers even the grimace of love, had cuckolded him." Whether
he left her or not was not was not in Miss Emily's control, but in death Miss Emily could keep him

Miss Emily and Her Rose
Miss Emily is a mysterious character in "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner. She is the
protagonist in this work. Emily used to be a vibrant and hopeful young woman, but something has
changed with her. She had plenty of potential suitors, but her father rejected them all. After her
father's death, she is devastated and lonely. It is almost as if she is depressed, but then she meets
homer Barron, a foreman from the north. They spend a lot of time together and the town certainly
notices. The town talks about these two and it spreads around like wildfire. One day, Homer is seen
going into Miss Emily's house and he is never seen again. Loss can affect anyone and it certainly
affects Miss Emily. Miss Emily's psychological resilience to anything remotely traumatic is very
low. She has a very high for need to get love from anyone. Miss Emily is a dynamic character; her
mind and body both change throughout the story, but they are very slight changes that someone
rarely notices at first. Throughout this tale, she changes mentally, socially, and physically. According
to Nicole Smith, One part of her that changes is her need to be social and "After her father's death
she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away people hardly saw her at all" (Faulkner 324).
In this quotation, it shows that because of losing two men in her life, it added to her want to live in
solitude. According to Nicole Smith, "Kinney has argued that Miss Emily's delusions, especially

Miss Emily Use Of Fear
Another way we see Emily using the town for her own personal gain is when a few of the men go to
fix the smell that begins to exude from her house. Miss Emily is so isolated from the town that no
one wants to confront her about the smell. After a couple of complaints, one particularly adamant
man approaches the judge in complete distress and says, "I'd be the last one in the world to bother
Miss Emily, but we've got to do something" (Faulkner, 518). This man represents the town in a
special way because he shows their fear of her. They are either terribly frightened of her or
incredibly intimidated by her or they maybe even think she is too fragile to take what they have to
say, but either way they are too scared to confront her directly. Instead, they have to sneak in the
middle of the night in order to avoid her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She manages to call them out on their ludicrous actions without ever speaking to them at all. The
story says, "As they recrossed the lawn, a window that had been dark was lighted and Miss Emily
sat in it, the light behind her, and her upright torso motionless as that of an idol" (Faulkner, 518).
Emily not only knows that people are sneaking around her house in the middle of the night, but she
also shows them that she knows by turning the light on and making herself visible in the window.
This image of her adds to the overall idea of Emily in the town; she is isolated from the rest of them
while still always being there and it allows her to get away with things she normally would not be
able to. In this moment, she is able to maintain a status of being something other than the rest of
them while also getting them to fix a problem for her. The men of Jefferson are literally helping

different geographic area from one another, but both stories had shown the similar reflection of their
lives style back to that early century. Miss. Emily from "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner
was a single woman who grew up in a wealthy family and was the only child of Griesons. However,
Emily was unlucky person. She did not enjoy her life that much as the family's business was in
trouble and the father died too soon. As he left her alone and with nothing, petty Emily was

How Is Miss Emily Grierson A Dynamic Character
Upon reading William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," one discovers several colorful characters,
including one Miss Emily Grierson of Jefferson, Mississippi. Readers uncover her quirks and
specific character traits as seen through the eyes of the townspeople who are highly interested in the
goings–on in her life. Miss Emily Grierson is a round yet static protagonist who is lonely, unyielding
to change, and overcome by her unfortunate life circumstances, and as such she should not be
considered a mad woman as many readers might accuse her of being.
Miss Emily lived her life almost throughout on display before the town of Jefferson and ultimately
this resulted in her lack of socialization and human interaction. The fault in this matter lies with her
father, the respected mayor of Jefferson, who protected her and kept her under thumb, driving away
every suitor that came to call. People came to picture poor Miss Emily as "a slender figure in white
in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching
a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back–flung front door" (Faulkner 35). In this
visualization, her father clearly stood between her and the real world as a threatening and
domineering figure. One might believe that such a prominent figure would interact with the public
on a daily basis in a positive manner, but it appears that the Grierson status only encouraged the
prying eyes of the townspeople to impede on Miss Emily's

The narrator in the short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner conveys the gossip–worthy
life of Emily Grierson through the eyes of the towns people. The story, which begins and ends at the
funeral of Miss Emily, is presented in flashbacks that are given in no seemingly particular time
sequence, thus adding suspense to the story. This also creates a mysterious attitude surrounding Miss
Emily, a once upper–class member of society who lost herself throughout the trials of life. In this
narrative, the reader can see Miss Emily transform from a young woman who often was an
overindulged and desirable young woman into an overweight, unstable, and seemingly lonely
woman of age who pulls herself away from society because of her mental instability, which could
stem from how she was brought up as an important member of the socialite class. We see this
change begin after the narrator reflects on who Miss Emily used to be in her youth where the
narrator states that, "none of the men were quite good enough for Miss Emily..." (Faulkner 302). He
then continues to describe her and her father as a "tableau", or a picture, "Miss Emily a slender
figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to
her..." (302). This insight of how Miss Emily was seen by the people while she was in her youth
illustrates to readers how Emily and her family were viewed; powerfully. Faulkner continues to
allude to the family's previous wealth throughout the

What Is The Significance Of Miss Emily Grierson's...
America experienced a great deal of changes during and after the Civil War upon which many
authors attempt to expound. In "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, the character Miss Emily
Grierson symbolizes the transition made in the South after the Civil War and reflects society's
resistance to change. The short story is set in post Civil War Jefferson, Texas where a town legend,
Miss Emily, experiences unpleasant changes stemming from the death of her father, who symbolizes
the Old South. The town, which symbolizes America as a whole, has to decently respond to Miss
Emily's outrageous actions in an attempt to help her maintain her dignity. The first line of the short
story describes the funeral of Miss Emily. Her funeral is described as a "respectful affection for a
fallen monument" (page 1, par. 1). This selection of detail shows that the town viewed her not as a
person but as a representation of something that needed to be left in the past, similar to a fallen
monument. Miss Emily received recognition as a "tradition, a duty," "a care" and an "obligation"
(page 1, par 3) rather than a person. This word choice shows that Miss Emily's character symbolizes
the change of the South, which put a burden on the rest of the nation. When she is buried they say
she "[joined] the representatives of those august names" amongst the "ranked and anonymous graves
of union and confederate soldiers" (page 1, par 2). The word choice in this description depicts her as
one of the soldiers who, long ago, fought and died ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

could not date anybody, her father passed away, she met a soon to be great guy, poisoned him, and

realized that she had the house to herself. She was actually excited because she felt free. She did not
have anybody trying to tell her what to do or have somebody stopping her from meeting any
possible boyfriends or husbands. People in the community were also a little excited about her being
home alone also, because they could know persuade her to tell what the body of her father was. Miss
Emily was a little antisocial and did not want to socialize with the people in her community. Not
long after he father passed away some ladies from the community were preparing to call her house
and offer aid. According to the text, "Miss Emily met them at the door, dressed as usual and with no
trace of grief on her face. She told them that her father was not dead. She did that for three days"
(Faulkner 123). During those three days numerous people, ministers and doctors, were trying to get

persuade her to let them dispose of the body. Miss Emily was sick for a long period of time. She

Miss Emily : A Short Story
On one normal afternoon, a big, strong man with a strong voice named Homer Barron completely
disappeared from the streets of a small town to never be seen again.Though it is unclear what
exactly happened, (due to Miss Emily's passing,we could not interrogate her on what happened)
there are many myths and rumors that have been spread throughout the lonely, abnormal town..
However, there is one story that seems to be more true than the others. In the early dawn, before
Homer's unanticipated disappearing, he traveled to Miss Emily's house. He had made plans to take
Miss Emily out to a fancy restaurant outside of town, but this was not the case in his misfortune.
When he got there, he saw Emily holding a ring with his first and last name, initials,H.B, printed on
the shiny, pure silver ring that would fit his finger perfectly. Instead of speaking to her calmly, he
then snatched the ring out of her small hands and threw it into the now flaming fireplace across the
room. Miss Emily had a depressing look in her eyes as she watched the ring fly across the room as if
in slow motion. Miss Emily now realized that this change of events has led her to feel the same as
when her father died."Must I tell you over and over again woman? I am not a marrying man!"
Homer exclaimed with anger boiling inside him. "How could you do such a terrible, awfully rude
thing such as that? I spent so much money on that ring to give it to you as a gift for redeeming my

Miss Emily In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily
Lost in the Past living with the Dead Ever looked at an old plantation home and thought, oh that's
creepy? Miss Emily Griersons home in William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" sure fits the
description of an old creepy home. Living in the town of Jefferson, after he father's death Miss
Emily was left with nothing else, but his home. By her actions portrayed in the book she refuses to
move on to new generations after her father's death and wishes to live just the way she always has.

Her mind and the way she lives is all based on her past life when her father was alive and well.
Growing up no man of the town was good enough for her and her father was exempted for paying
taxes in the town (Faulkner 223, 221). The first sign that Miss Emily is stuck in the past is when she
tells the city authorities "See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson "(Faulkner 222). At this
time Colonel Sartoris had been dead for nearly ten years. (Faulkner 222). Miss Emily is also very
harshly spoke of by the townspeople. As the druggist visited her home one day Miss Emily asked
her for a strong poison, arsenic to be exact (Faulkner 224). After that day the narrator, who seems to
be speaking as one of the townspeople states "So the next day we all said, "She will kill herself""
(Faulkner 224). For them to believe Miss Emily would ask for poison to kill herself says she is
mental in their minds. Her looks were also described as "sort of tragic and serene" (Faulkner 223).
At Miss Emily's funeral when the nosey townspeople roam the home it is confirmed she had
murdered Homer Barron about 40 years prior to her death and had been living with his dead corpse
(Faulkner 226). Only a person with a mental issue would kill their lover and keep their dead

The Gothic Setting Of Miss Emily
The Gothic Setting of Miss Emily
The story, "A Rose for Emily," written by William Faulkner in 1930, shows the gothic elements of
how isolation influences the mind. The main character is Emily Grierson whose mental state of
mind focuses on her home and town. There is a dark setting in this story that highlights the impact
of how isolation prohibits one from being mentally healthy. Miss Emily 's home appearance is
desolate, rugged, and dingy which demonstrates her mindset. Similar to today's society, Miss Emily
is resistant to change and stuck in tradition. The setting of isolation resulted in Miss Emily's thinking
of being privileged, causing her to fail in seeking a normal life with love and affection.
The location of the town, where Miss Emily lives, is located in the South which leads the reader to
believe this was the era in which men dominated with strict and headstrong mentalities. The Civil
War has just ended, and the South was defeated. The location of Miss Emily's home is not too far
from the cemetery occupied by the fallen Confederate and Union Soldiers, who took part in the
battle of Jefferson. Miss Emily and her father appear important, possibly upper–class, and during the
war their home may have housed some of the Confederate Soldiers. The narrator says "Colonel
Sartoris invented an involved tale to the effect that Miss Emily's father had loaned money to the
town, which the town, as a matter of business preferred this way of repaying" (pg. 1). The Grierson's

The story portrays Miss Emily and the people in a southern town of Jefferson during the late 1800s
and early 1900s. The town and the house itself take their own characterization alongside Emily, the
main character. It is the significant reason behind Emily's attitude and actions. The use of this time–
period is essential in giving the reader an understanding to the values and beliefs of the characters
within the story. The people from the town seem fascinated with Miss Emily as an antique of older
times.
The conflict is very clear, man against himself. We can perceive a woman reclusive and introverted
after her father's death, and poisoning her fiancé. She kept his dead body inside the house and slept
next to him as well. She is doing what she feels is necessary to relieve the tension placed over her
shoulders by the people from the town. Here is when the conflict comes to live, man against man.

Miss Emily In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily
A Rose for Emily How does the narrator and (and the town) view Miss Emily? Find passages that
represent more than one view of her and explain their significance. William Cuthbert Faulkner was
born in New Albany, Mississippi on September 25, 1897. His family moved to Oxford, Mississippi
when Faulkner was five years old. His parents were Murray and Maud Falkner. Knowing that
Faulkner's strongest influence was his independent mother, one can guess that Miss Emily
Grierson's character was based partly on Maud Falkner. Emily Grierson was a southern born
aristocrat, honored and respected by the town, but they knew from her family history there was
some form of mental illness in her. This is the story of Emily Grierson and her death and how the

Social Aspects Of Miss Emily
"A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner examines the social aspects of Miss Emily's life. Miss
Emily is an antisocial older woman who separates herself from the rest of society. There are
different reasons that may have cause her to become the person she is, such as her father's death,
society, and culture change. Miss Emily's dad passes away in the beginning of the story. It is obvious
that she still looks up and admires her dad. "On a tarnished gilt easel before the fireplace stood a
crayon portrait of Miss Emily's father" (5). Miss Emily Grierson is happier and social when her dad
is alive. Death can lead to depression of love ones and that is what Miss Grierson is suffering from.
Thus, affecting her social life with the other townspeople. She simply wants to be alone and do not
want to get close with other people in the town except this one guy, Homer Barron that she meets.
She is afraid of death. She is also afraid of getting close to someone and that person leaving her
behind. An example is when she goes to the store to buy a deadly poison to kill Homer Barron (a
man she gets attach to, growing a relationship with) and locks him up in one of her rooms, so he can
never leave her (Faulkner 45–60). Since her father's death, she feels as if she has to keep the
Grierson's name and reputation. "She carried her head high enough...as if she demanded more than
ever the recognition of her dignity as the last Grierson" (33). Miss Emily is in a different social class
than others.

Snapshots of Miss Emily in A Rose for Emily
"A Rose for Miss Emily" by William Faulkner is a story of quiet lonliness and tragedy. The story
ends on a surprising note, but one for which the reader is not totally unprepared. Faulkner very
cleverly uses changing pictures of Miss Emily's physical state to give the reader a clue as to what is
transpiring inside her.
The picture or "tableau" of Emily in her childhood gives us our first clue into her strange
personality. She is "a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in
the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back–

The turning point comes after Miss Emily has met and possibly fallen in love with Homer Barron. It
is this scene that clues the reader in to the surprising ending. They have been seeing each other long
enough for the subject of marriage to come up when we next see her at the druggist's counter. Here
she is pictured as "thinner than usual, with cold, haughty black eyes in a face the flesh of which was
strained across the temples and about the eyesockets . . ." The description somewhat reminds us of a
sinister–looking skeleton, and somehow, we just know she is up to no good when she purchases the
arsenic from the druggist.
We know life is ebbing when we next see Miss Emily, but we can tell that she is stubbornly hanging
on. "She had grown fat and her hair was turning gray." Faulkner goes into great detail in describing
hair. I believe hair is a symbol not only of youth and of life, but also of strength. In describing her
hair as "vigorous iron–gray, like the hair of an active man," he alludes to her tenacity to hang on to
her ways.
Our final glimpse of Miss Emily before she dies is a picture of a soul which is nearly shut off from
life. Now and then the townspeople see her through one of the downstairs windows. The upstairs

A Rose For Miss Emily Analysis
William Faulkner's most anthologized short story, "A Rose for Miss Emily" has been examined from
nearly every point of view imaginable from the patriarchal, Old South notion of a lady to
insinuations of incest. By focusing on the underlying military motif of the story, Miss Emily
emerges with a different image that may shed new light on Faulkner's classic tale. Miss Emily,
revered by the men of the town as "a fallen monument" (Faulkner, paragraph 1), is buried among the
soldiers who died during the Civil War battle of Jefferson. By identifying Miss Emily with the
military occupants of the cemetery, rather than the other townsfolk buried there, it suggests that this
is the peer group to which Miss Emily belongs. This description of her ... Show more content on

She "vanquished them, horse and foot as she had vanquished their fathers thirty years before about
the smell" (Faulkner, paragraph 15). "Vanquish" is a strong term specifically denoting to overcome
in battle. The addition of the phrase "horse and foot" is a reference to the cavalry and the infantry.
Miss Emily has won a complete military victory over the town, then, and the narrator makes clear
this has happened before. In addition to Miss Emily's victories in the battle over the taxes and the
battle over the smell, Miss Emily won the battle against putting up house numbers and a mailbox,
the battle with the Baptist minister, and the battle against the druggist. Rather than obey the law and
disclose the purpose of the poison, Miss Emily is compared to a flag that stands erect and straining
in the wind, another image easily drawn from a battle field in which the victor's flag waves proudly
over the place of battle (O'Brien, 104). Faulkner gives us only one battle that Miss Emily loses to
the town – the burial of her father. Although she fought valiantly for three days, the town's forces
prevailed, and her father was buried. However, it was done quickly, whether because of the decay of
the body or the town's fear of Miss Emily's wrath it is not disclosed. What we do know, though, is
that Miss Emily is painted with adjectives that could easily describe a war general: impervious,
vigorous, iron–gray. She is described as an idol in a niche watching over the town.

A Rose for Emily: Factors the Impacted Miss Emily's Behavior
"A Rose for Emily" is a fictional short story written by 1949 Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner.
Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is about an aristocratic woman who lived a very secretive and
unusual life. Miss Emily had always been very sheltered by her father. He was the only man in her
life and after his death, her behavior became even more unnatural. However her father's death
cannot be seen as the only cause of Miss Emily's insanity. Miss Emily's behavior was also
influenced by her own expectations of herself, the townspeople's lack of authority over her, and her
neighbor's infatuation with her.

The narrator also reveals that Miss Emily had too much pride to accept any charity or pity from
others.
Miss Emily knew no authority. The townspeople would at times attempt some type of control, but
they gave in easily when Miss Emily resisted. When the man who had deceived her into not paying
taxes passed away, the next generation of alderman
attempted to make Miss Emily once again pay her taxes. They met no success in doing so and did
nothing further. The same was so when Miss Emily bought arsenic. The pharmacist requested a
reason for buying it, but without an answer, he let Miss Emily do as she pleased. When a disgusting
odor came from Miss Emily's House, instead of telling her to fix the problem and hurt her pride,
four men attempted to fix it themselves in secret. Overall Miss Emily answered to no one.
The information that we do have about Miss Emily's genuinely mysterious life was obtained through
her prying neighbors. They did everything possible, without disrespect, to find out more about her.
They knew where she had been, with whom, and when. The secrecy of Miss Emily's life fascinated
everyone that knew her. The more that time went on and the more that neighbors pried, the less Miss
Emily appeared until soon she was hardly seen at all and let no one into her home. Even at Miss
Emily's funeral the whole town came to satisfy some of their curiosity. Miss Emily seemed to enjoy
being secretive and did her best to be so.

Miss Emily Grierson In Faulkner's A Rose For Emily
Miss Emily Grierson, the main character in the short story "A Rose For Emily" was a very peculiar
woman. Often prideful and aloof towards others, Emily stands her ground as a static character in
Faulkner's work. She is withdrawn from the ever–changing world around her, living in a world of
delusions and neglect. Although many pitied this fallen monument, she learned to live in isolation in
her decaying home. Surrounded by lavish furnishing and the only people desperate enough for her
love; a silent Negro servant, and a dead lover. It seems as if young Emily Grierson had a
quintessential life. Her family, as we know consisted just of her father, was one of the wealthiest in
their small town of Jefferson, Mississippi. Mr. Grierson, who was briefly mentioned before his
passing, was a very prideful man with a lot of name recognition. Everyone in town knew the

Miss Emily Collective Voice

  • 1. Miss Emily Collective Voice Miss Emily's story is certainly bizarre, suspenseful, and mysterious enough to engage the reader's attention fully For example, her affair with Homer Barron may be seen as a middle–aged woman's belated rebellion against her repressive father and against the town's burdensome expectations. That William Faulkner intended her story to have a much larger dimension is suggested by his choice of an unnamed citizen of Jefferson to tell it. Faulkner never speaks or writes as an individual, never uses the pronoun "I," always speaks as "we." As representative of the townspeople, Faulkner feels a compulsion to tell the story of a woman who represents something important to the community. Black voices are excluded from this collective voice as it speaks out of old and new generations. Even though Miss Emily was a child during the Civil War, she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is a visible holdover into the modern South of a bygone era of romance, chivalry, and the Lost Cause. Early, the narrator invokes such concepts as tradition, duty, hereditary obligation, and custom, suggesting a continuation of idea in the community consciousness of those old values. The community's sense of time is mostly for the most part a record of events starting with the earliest and following the order in which the events occurred, but it is also like Emily's, the confused, psychological time sense of memory. Like many women of the defeated upper class in the Deep South, Miss Emily withdraws from the earliest time of reality into the timelessness of illusion. • 3. Miss Emily Is An Alien Since Homer admitted his relation to men, the women of the town have sprung in curiosity for Emily's reaction. The town has begun to say once more, " Poor Emily"; although, the children say: "Miss Emily was an alien." This bizarre issue was difficult to process, and some believed the theory the children spoke about repeatedly. Most of the town paid no mind to the children's thoughts; therefore, they carried on gossiping. Emily slowly vanished once more; consequently, Homer disappeared, not giving her a reason to make an appearance. In consternation, the people attentively engaged themselves in the children's stories, even though they sounded obscure to the human mind. The children commenced their hypothesis, however, the story was suddenly interrupted by Miss Emily's servant, "You fools! Miss Emily was no alien. Let me tell you the real story." The shock on everyone's face brought them to the abrupt thought of intrigue. His crusty old voice shook as his figure bent in years of labor, "I first started observing her everyday behaviors as they gradually became petrifying. Miss Emily had a great attachment to Homer. One in which, she would have done anything to have his affection back. I would hear screams coming from across the hall as I cooked her dinner." Everyone was in dismay of his story, but would not dare move an inch for they desired to listen. The old man continued on his speech by saying, "She planned for a wedding and I helped prepare it. • 5. Miss Emily Loss Of Power Through Miss Emily, Faulkner conveys his perspective on the drastic changes the south went through post Civil War. Miss Emily is displayed in many forms that include her attitude, behavior, and physical image. She is depicted as a crazed, lonely woman who never came out of her house. Such descriptions gives us reasoning to believe that Miss Emily represented the South's loss of power. Miss Emily gives us a personal aspect of the conflicts the South encountered. She was perceived as a powerless, secluded, lady who never interacted with anyone, and never abandoned her house. We are presented with Miss Emily's stern stubborn attitude once she was faced with the claims of her unpaid taxes. Miss Emily on several occasions presents herself with an attitude in which we begin to interpret as a defense mechanism in which she defies all sense of responsibility as she assumes she is above the law or old southern hospitality. This is the literal representation of the South and it's loss of control and how they denied it to be true. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Miss Emily is very reserved from the rest of her community. The interpretation of her behavior symbolizes the difference in behavior once the South and North are compared. • 7. Character Analysis Of Miss Emily Grierson Upon reading "A Rose for Emily," penned by William Faulkner, one discovers several colorful characters, including one Miss Emily Grierson, who may be best described as a wilting violet in a time capsule. As the daughter of a colonel who was once the respected town mayor, Miss Emily met a much different fate than one might have expected of someone with such a high societal status. In keeping with the idea that humans are flawed beings, a tragic hero is often described as an individual with immense potential who meets a horrific end due to flaws within themselves, and the main character in Faulkner's short story undeniably meets these criteria. In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," Miss Emily Grierson suffers an unfortunate fate due to her lack of willingness to evolve as the times changed, her intense need to keep up appearances, and her withdrawal from society which leads readers to accept her as a tragic hero. Throughout the course of the story, it becomes evident to readers that Miss Emily lived her life as though time was on pause, and nothing was allowed to be altered within the confines of her reality; in regard to this realization, one notes that this is where she first began her long fall down the well. In retrospect, she held fast to the days when she fancied herself a symbol of the flourishing south and became stationary in an antiquated period of life when the times began to change. She made it known that she wanted no part of change, and she never chose to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Diagnosing Miss Emily in William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily there is more than enough evidence to determine that Miss Emily is mentally ill. Most of the clues and hints are subtle, but when they are all pieced together the puzzle becomes clear. Not saying it is clear as too what Miss Emily was suffering from, the only way to know that for certain would be if the author or narrator told us in the text. We can conclude, however, she was suffering from some form of mental illness. Miss Emily was seen as a recluse and odd, but what no one in the town knew was that she couldn't help it there was more going on with her then people could see. By the story's conclusion, the reader can go back through the story and identify many episodes where Miss Emily behavior ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Miss Emily refuses to respond to a government letter regarding her taxes the Board of Alderman comes to visit her. When she comes in she is cold to the gentlemen, showing her lack of social skills which in many cases is a factor in mental Illness. Also before Miss Emily makes the guests leave she tells the, that if they still think she has taxes they need to "see Colonel Sartoris," (Faulkner 149) who has been dead ten years. This statement by Miss Emily could be seen as her minds unwillingness to live in the present. Her mind belives what it wants which is also the case after her fathers death. We see in the book that after her father's death and her subsequent breakdown, Miss Emily was "sick for a long time." This could mean the state that Miss Emily refused to believe her father was gone. Right after the death of her father, the ladies of the town come to Miss Emily's home to offer their condolences, and they observe that she had "no trace of grief on her face" (Faulkner 151). The inability to either feel or demonstrate appropriate emotion, is a classic symptom of mental illness. More explicitly, Miss Emily insisted to the visitors that "her father was not dead" (Faulkner 151). For this reason, Miss Emily would not let anyone remove her father's body until three days after her father should have been buried. • 13. Miss Emily Pompous In "A Rose for Emily" written by William Faulkner, a story is told about a woman and her disturbingly interesting life. Emily is a woman who is respected. Along with respect, the townspeople are also very curious of Miss Emily's secretive lifestyle. Through many tales told about her life the readers discover that Miss Emily has many strange things that she does. MIss Emily refuses to pay taxes, tries to keep her dead father's body, is thought to have married a man that disappeared and lets her beautiful house go to ruin. Although Miss Emily's family used to be revered after her father passed away, the town started to believe that Miss Emily was pompous. All of these things contribute to the odd way Miss Emily is thought of. From the beginning of the story to the very end Miss Emily is portrayed in a way that made her seem pretentious and hateful. For most of her life she has been raised up to know that she was above everyone else in the town, or that is what her family believes. Their family has always been well respected because of their wealth and social positioning. Along with Colonel Sartoris's, a very important political figure in the town, help a story was made that Miss Emily did not have to pay taxes because of a debt of the town to her family. Moreover, the result of her father's death causes Miss Emily to refuse to acknowledge his death for three days. • 17. Miss Emily In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily By examining Miss Emily's behavior and her social relationships, it is possible to diagnose Miss Emily with mental illnesses: PTSD and schizophrenia. Miss Emily Grierson, the main character in "A Rose for Emily," written by William Faulkner, is a strange character. Miss Emily's unpredictable and idiosyncratic behavior is bizarre, and the reader, like the townspeople in the story, was left wondering how to explain the fact that Miss Emily has spent years living and sleeping with the corpse of Homer Barron. On page 772, the whole town went to Miss Emily's funeral when she died. It is a chronic condition, requiring lifelong treatment. It is unknown of what causes schizophrenia, but researchers believe that genetics, brain chemistry and environment contributes to development of the disorder. (Mayo Clinic) Miss Emily could also have schizophrenia as a response to the demanding conditions in which she was living as a Southern woman from an aristocratic family. Miss Emily decompensated because she was unable to develop healthy and adaptive coping and defense mechanisms. When her father dies, Miss Emily avoids all contact with others and other psychotic symptoms become evident. Immediately after her father's death, ladies from the town came to Miss Emily's home to offer condolences and aid, and observe that she had "no trace of grief on her face" (pg. 775). Perhaps, Miss Emily insisted to the visitors that "her father was not dead" (pg. 775). • 19. A Rose for Miss Emily Faulkner guides us through his short story "A Rose for Miss Emily", with his own unique form of third person limited narration. This narration allows the audience to follow the opinions of the narrator and develop the mindset the author desires his audience to have. Specifically, William's choice to begin the story with the description of Emily's funeral gives the reader a sort of inherent sympathy for Miss Emily, which we, the readers, naturally carry through the story as we build our opinion of Emily. Faulkner then continues to build shape our opinion of Emily through the metaphorical comparison of her with a "Fallen Monument." Such a comparison unsurprisingly leads the reader to think of Miss Emily as some sort of tarnished noble, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Faulkner's narrative choice to present this incident at the beginning of the story allows the audience to intertwine their feelings of sympathy for Miss Emily with those of the distaste on would feel in for someone who treated them as she treated her guests. Additionally the reader becomes more observant of the tone and attitude Miss Emily has towards other people. This short, cold ability to intimidate people into doing as she wishes is something that continually developed as she became older. Furthermore, when this was combined with her status as a "high and mighty Grierson" (page 392 Norton) the townspeople never seemed to be able to confront her about any sort of insubordination she was the source of. The smell, being the first of these annoyances she created, was met with inability on part of the town's people to decide exactly what to do about the situation. The first complaint of it came in the form of gossip, like much of the discussion of Miss Emily did. This finally progressed to a complaint to the judge, who admitted to having no idea as to what course of action to take but agreed to ask about it. This obviously did nothing because two more complaints came in the very next day, further showing the cowardice the townspeople show in the face of one secluded old lady. This situation is resolved by four men sneaking onto her property "like burglars" (page 393 Norton) and sprinkling lime in her basement. This shows the supremacy Miss ... • 21. Miss Emily Symbolism In "A Rose for Emily," William Faulkner depicts the rather odd life of Miss Emily Grierson. From the point of view of Emily's hometown, she is depicted as extremely stubborn. Emily was cut off from the world by her father, and as such has misunderstandings about how to develop any meaningful relationships. Because he sent her pursuers away, she becomes overly dependent on her father and is distraught at his passing. She lives in the past, unable to process loss. The layers of dust imply that there are many secrets about Miss Emily and about what is contained in her house. Faulkner then writes, "On a tarnished gilt easel before the fireplace stood a crayon portrait of Miss Emily's father" (Faulkner). The painting shows how even years after his death Mr. Grierson still influences how Emily lives and acts. In the story, taxes symbolize death. The death of her father can be symbolized by the cancellation of Miss Emily's taxes. It also symbolizes Mr. Grierson's control, even from the grave, over Miss Emily. Upon her father's death the mayor at the time created an elaborate story to protect Miss Emily from having to pay taxes. This lie was created due to chivalry and sexism. It is chivalrous as the cancellation of her taxes allows her to continue to live in her father's house. It was sexist because it was impossible for Miss Emily to work and financially support herself. "When the next generation...became mayors and aldermen, this arrangement created some dissatisfaction," taxes once again symbolize death, but this time of an older way of life (Faulkner). • 23. Miss Emily Questions In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," the elderly woman is mysterious, suspicious, and a murderer. Throughout the story the narrator talks a little about Emily's back story but the narrator does go as far as telling about her child hood growing up but instead talks about her life from the time she is a young adult until she is an elder. We start to see that there are some unanswered questions throughout the entire story, and even with the surprise ending it still leaves us with a lot of questions that need to be answered. Since the narrator didn't give that much of a backstory regarding Miss Emily, we must come up with theories and conclusions to answer our own questions. First, we see that Miss Emily is mysterious even from the very beginning because the narrator talks about how her house used to be, "white, decorated with cupolas, and spires, and scrolled balconies". By the way the narrator describes her house it seems that it used to be very beautiful and full of life, but now the, "garages and cotton gins had encroached and obliterated". The narrator mentions in the story is that Miss Emily had a manservant; we start to ask ourselves the question that if she has a servant to wait on her hand and foot than how could she let her house get in such a bad shape like that when she could have asked her servant to keep the house tidy since she is too old to do it herself. Another thing that is mysterious is that the narrator mentions that she hardly ever leaves her house ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Analysis Of Miss Emily Grieson In A Rose For Emily Miss Emily Grieson, a character in William Faulkner's short story, "A Rose for Emily" was true a southern belle, steeped in southern traditions, although the town was changing all around her. She was "a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town, dating [back to] 1894" (Chapter 1). This southern belle spent her first 40 years living an aristocratic, wealthy lifestyle. Miss Emily lived in a southern mansion with her father, but during her late 30's her father died, leaving her alone. Shortly after her father's death, Miss Emily began to openly court "Homer Barron, a Yankee" (Chapter 3). After their brief romance, Homer left town and the southern belle didn't come out of her house for years. When Miss Emily died, a few men from town breached her home. Inside they find a mysterious and dust–ridden mansion. The men are shocked to find Homer's body, in a locked room, lying on a bed, under several years of dust. On the pillow next to Homer was a recent impression of a head. In that impression they found one strand of long gray hair, which most likely belonged to Miss Emily. Her secret shocked the town. For years she had lived her life "above" the townspeople. However, her death revealed an eternal truth: we are all equal and we will all one–day return to the dust. Faulkner uses the illusion of dust as the great equalizer, a symbol of the crumbling decline of Miss Emily's aristocratic life style and the traditions of the old south. This allusion ... Miss Emily Grierson In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily Left open to interpretation, William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," tells the remarkable story of Miss Emily Grierson whose life and death, particularly her funeral, drew the attention of her town. Throughout the story, respectability, and the loss of it is presented as the central theme. Faulkner's elaborate use of setting coupled with characterization foreshadows and creates suspense and his use of metaphors help guide the reader to the climax of the story, Miss Grierson's bittersweet ending. Initially, the story begins by depicting the death of Miss Grierson and subsequently includes flashbacks of her adolescence all the while hinting at the demise of a woman and the past she personifies. "But garages and cotton gins had encroached and obliterated even the august names of that neighborhood; only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps. • 31. The Passage Of Time In William Faulkner's Miss Emily Memories are an ability of the mind to store, retain, and recall data, information, and details from the past. They can be extremely vivid, but we also tend to lose them as we age. It's common for humans to struggle to grasp and hold onto their memories for however long we can. Memories are part of an individual's identity and can encase the reasons for their upbringing, their relationships, and their emotions. In this story, Emily resists the passage of time (West 527). The story is written in a way that seems scattered and out of order, making it harder to follow but allowing for a lot of foreshadowing. Through the 5 sections, new characteristics are revealed about the mysterious plot line, as well as the peculiar Miss Emily. Time and memories go hand in hand, and William Faulkner's Miss Emily fully displays what happens when a person cannot cope with the passage of time. The speaker provides many ways to explore this, such as the relationship between Miss Emily and her father, Mr. Grierson, Homer Barron, and how Emily copes with the aftermath of Homer's death. (this last sentence doesn't flow. I think you can make it two sentences.) Faulkner starts to illustrate the power of memories and creates the relationship Emily has with her father. This really shows us some background into her character and into why she appears to have some attachment issues. Emily's father is extremely controlling. He comes off to be very imminent in Emily's life even after his death, probably ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Looking at the psychological point of view and the symptoms it is possible that Miss Emily due to her desire to possess an unresisting partner, wanting to be reunited with someone who passed away, fear of rejection, emotional disorders and poor self esteem, was a necrophiliac, a disorder in which a person has sexual relations with a corpse (Griffiths 1). Emily became attracted to Homer Barron and refused to lose him. Sixty eight percent of necrophiliacs stated that they wanted to be with an unresisting partner (Griffiths 1). Necrophiliacs may have a fear of rejection and wish for a partner who cannot reject them (Griffiths 2). Faulkner mentions, "...a short time after her sweetheart––the one we believed would marry her––had deserted her" (97). After this happened, Miss Emily's emotions had to be distressed which follows into how necrophilia is caused by emotional disorders as well. Due to several different feelings it is not surprising that necrophiliacs can have an increase in emotional disorders (Griffiths 2). Emily faced a traumatic death of her father which sparked her actions to spiral out of control. "She told them that her father was not dead. She did that for three days...." (98). She refused to accept her father's death, and she kept his dead body in the house until she finally broke down and handed it over. Due to her unbalanced emotions, Miss Emily began to lose self– esteem. Due to consistent failure and over excessive attatchments necrophiliacs can have a decrease in self–esteem (Griffiths 2). She struggled to build relationships and find love. "So when she got to be thirty and was still single..."(97). When Miss Emily comes into the room in Part 1 she is described as have a "thin gold chain descending to her waist and vanishing into her belt," and it is later revealed that it is a clocked hidden away from sight. Though it is a small detail, it explains how Miss Emily is shying away from time. When the townspeople open the room Homer Barron was in, everything in the room is untouched. Within this bridal tomb were tarnished men's toiletries and attire, that when removed left behind an indentation amongst the dust. When the narrator describes Homer Barron he says, "What was left of him, rotted beneath what was left of the nightshirt, had become inextricable from the bed in which he lay; and upon him and upon the pillow beside him lay that even coating of the patient and binding dust." The narrator also says, "The body had apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace, but now the long sleep that outlasts love, that conquers even the grimace of love, had cuckolded him." • 39. Miss Emily and Her Rose Miss Emily is a mysterious character in "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner. She is the protagonist in this work. Emily used to be a vibrant and hopeful young woman, but something has changed with her. She had plenty of potential suitors, but her father rejected them all. After her father's death, she is devastated and lonely. It is almost as if she is depressed, but then she meets homer Barron, a foreman from the north. They spend a lot of time together and the town certainly notices. The town talks about these two and it spreads around like wildfire. One day, Homer is seen going into Miss Emily's house and he is never seen again. Loss can affect anyone and it certainly affects Miss Emily. Miss Emily's psychological resilience to anything remotely traumatic is very low. She has a very high for need to get love from anyone. Miss Emily is a dynamic character; her mind and body both change throughout the story, but they are very slight changes that someone rarely notices at first. Throughout this tale, she changes mentally, socially, and physically. According to Nicole Smith, One part of her that changes is her need to be social and "After her father's death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away people hardly saw her at all" (Faulkner 324). In this quotation, it shows that because of losing two men in her life, it added to her want to live in solitude. After a couple of complaints, one particularly adamant man approaches the judge in complete distress and says, "I'd be the last one in the world to bother Miss Emily, but we've got to do something" (Faulkner, 518). This man represents the town in a special way because he shows their fear of her. They are either terribly frightened of her or incredibly intimidated by her or they maybe even think she is too fragile to take what they have to say, but either way they are too scared to confront her directly. Instead, they have to sneak in the middle of the night in order to avoid her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emily not only knows that people are sneaking around her house in the middle of the night, but she also shows them that she knows by turning the light on and making herself visible in the window. This image of her adds to the overall idea of Emily in the town; she is isolated from the rest of them while still always being there and it allows her to get away with things she normally would not be able to. How Is Miss Emily Grierson A Dynamic Character Upon reading William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," one discovers several colorful characters, including one Miss Emily Grierson of Jefferson, Mississippi. Readers uncover her quirks and specific character traits as seen through the eyes of the townspeople who are highly interested in the goings–on in her life. Miss Emily Grierson is a round yet static protagonist who is lonely, unyielding to change, and overcome by her unfortunate life circumstances, and as such she should not be considered a mad woman as many readers might accuse her of being. Miss Emily lived her life almost throughout on display before the town of Jefferson and ultimately this resulted in her lack of socialization and human interaction. The fault in this matter lies with her father, the respected mayor of Jefferson, who protected her and kept her under thumb, driving away every suitor that came to call. People came to picture poor Miss Emily as "a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back–flung front door" (Faulkner 35). In this visualization, her father clearly stood between her and the real world as a threatening and domineering figure. One might believe that such a prominent figure would interact with the public on a daily basis in a positive manner, but it appears that the Grierson status only encouraged the prying eyes of the townspeople to impede on Miss Emily's ... • 47. Miss Emily The narrator in the short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner conveys the gossip–worthy life of Emily Grierson through the eyes of the towns people. The story, which begins and ends at the funeral of Miss Emily, is presented in flashbacks that are given in no seemingly particular time sequence, thus adding suspense to the story. This also creates a mysterious attitude surrounding Miss Emily, a once upper–class member of society who lost herself throughout the trials of life. In this narrative, the reader can see Miss Emily transform from a young woman who often was an overindulged and desirable young woman into an overweight, unstable, and seemingly lonely woman of age who pulls herself away from society because of her mental instability, which could stem from how she was brought up as an important member of the socialite class. We see this change begin after the narrator reflects on who Miss Emily used to be in her youth where the narrator states that, "none of the men were quite good enough for Miss Emily..." (Faulkner 302). He then continues to describe her and her father as a "tableau", or a picture, "Miss Emily a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her..." (302). This insight of how Miss Emily was seen by the people while she was in her youth illustrates to readers how Emily and her family were viewed; powerfully. • 49. What Is The Significance Of Miss Emily Grierson's... America experienced a great deal of changes during and after the Civil War upon which many authors attempt to expound. In "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, the character Miss Emily Grierson symbolizes the transition made in the South after the Civil War and reflects society's resistance to change. The short story is set in post Civil War Jefferson, Texas where a town legend, Miss Emily, experiences unpleasant changes stemming from the death of her father, who symbolizes the Old South. The town, which symbolizes America as a whole, has to decently respond to Miss Emily's outrageous actions in an attempt to help her maintain her dignity. The first line of the short story describes the funeral of Miss Emily. Her funeral is described as a "respectful affection for a fallen monument" (page 1, par. 1). This selection of detail shows that the town viewed her not as a person but as a representation of something that needed to be left in the past, similar to a fallen monument. Miss Emily received recognition as a "tradition, a duty," "a care" and an "obligation" (page 1, par 3) rather than a person. This word choice shows that Miss Emily's character symbolizes the change of the South, which put a burden on the rest of the nation. When she is buried they say she "[joined] the representatives of those august names" amongst the "ranked and anonymous graves of union and confederate soldiers" (page 1, par 2). Miss Emily : A Short Story On one normal afternoon, a big, strong man with a strong voice named Homer Barron completely disappeared from the streets of a small town to never be seen again.Though it is unclear what exactly happened, (due to Miss Emily's passing,we could not interrogate her on what happened) there are many myths and rumors that have been spread throughout the lonely, abnormal town.. However, there is one story that seems to be more true than the others. In the early dawn, before Homer's unanticipated disappearing, he traveled to Miss Emily's house. He had made plans to take Miss Emily out to a fancy restaurant outside of town, but this was not the case in his misfortune. When he got there, he saw Emily holding a ring with his first and last name, initials,H.B, printed on the shiny, pure silver ring that would fit his finger perfectly. Instead of speaking to her calmly, he then snatched the ring out of her small hands and threw it into the now flaming fireplace across the room. Miss Emily had a depressing look in her eyes as she watched the ring fly across the room as if in slow motion. Miss Emily now realized that this change of events has led her to feel the same as when her father died."Must I tell you over and over again woman? I am not a marrying man!" Homer exclaimed with anger boiling inside him. "How could you do such a terrible, awfully rude thing such as that? I spent so much money on that ring to give it to you as a gift for redeeming my ... The Gothic Setting Of Miss Emily The Gothic Setting of Miss Emily The story, "A Rose for Emily," written by William Faulkner in 1930, shows the gothic elements of how isolation influences the mind. The main character is Emily Grierson whose mental state of mind focuses on her home and town. There is a dark setting in this story that highlights the impact of how isolation prohibits one from being mentally healthy. Miss Emily 's home appearance is desolate, rugged, and dingy which demonstrates her mindset. Similar to today's society, Miss Emily is resistant to change and stuck in tradition. The setting of isolation resulted in Miss Emily's thinking of being privileged, causing her to fail in seeking a normal life with love and affection. The location of the town, where Miss Emily lives, is located in the South which leads the reader to believe this was the era in which men dominated with strict and headstrong mentalities. Miss Emily is an antisocial older woman who separates herself from the rest of society. There are different reasons that may have cause her to become the person she is, such as her father's death, society, and culture change. Miss Emily's dad passes away in the beginning of the story. It is obvious that she still looks up and admires her dad. "On a tarnished gilt easel before the fireplace stood a crayon portrait of Miss Emily's father" (5). Miss Emily Grierson is happier and social when her dad is alive. Death can lead to depression of love ones and that is what Miss Grierson is suffering from. Thus, affecting her social life with the other townspeople. She simply wants to be alone and do not want to get close with other people in the town except this one guy, Homer Barron that she meets. She is afraid of death. She is also afraid of getting close to someone and that person leaving her behind. An example is when she goes to the store to buy a deadly poison to kill Homer Barron (a man she gets attach to, growing a relationship with) and locks him up in one of her rooms, so he can never leave her (Faulkner 45–60). Since her father's death, she feels as if she has to keep the Grierson's name and reputation. "She carried her head high enough...as if she demanded more than ever the recognition of her dignity as the last Grierson" (33). Miss Emily is in a different social class than others. ... • 67. Snapshots of Miss Emily in William Faulkner's A Rose for... Snapshots of Miss Emily in A Rose for Emily "A Rose for Miss Emily" by William Faulkner is a story of quiet lonliness and tragedy. The story ends on a surprising note, but one for which the reader is not totally unprepared. Faulkner very cleverly uses changing pictures of Miss Emily's physical state to give the reader a clue as to what is transpiring inside her. The picture or "tableau" of Emily in her childhood gives us our first clue into her strange personality. She is "a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back– flung front door." The scene almost blatantly reveals Emily in her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The turning point comes after Miss Emily has met and possibly fallen in love with Homer Barron. It is this scene that clues the reader in to the surprising ending. They have been seeing each other long enough for the subject of marriage to come up when we next see her at the druggist's counter. Here she is pictured as "thinner than usual, with cold, haughty black eyes in a face the flesh of which was strained across the temples and about the eyesockets . . ." The description somewhat reminds us of a sinister–looking skeleton, and somehow, we just know she is up to no good when she purchases the arsenic from the druggist. We know life is ebbing when we next see Miss Emily, but we can tell that she is stubbornly hanging on. "She had grown fat and her hair was turning gray." Faulkner goes into great detail in describing hair. I believe hair is a symbol not only of youth and of life, but also of strength. In describing her hair as "vigorous iron–gray, like the hair of an active man," he alludes to her tenacity to hang on to her ways. Our final glimpse of Miss Emily before she dies is a picture of a soul which is nearly shut off from life. Now and then the townspeople see her through one of the downstairs windows. • 69. A Rose For Miss Emily Analysis William Faulkner's most anthologized short story, "A Rose for Miss Emily" has been examined from nearly every point of view imaginable from the patriarchal, Old South notion of a lady to insinuations of incest. By focusing on the underlying military motif of the story, Miss Emily emerges with a different image that may shed new light on Faulkner's classic tale. Miss Emily, revered by the men of the town as "a fallen monument" (Faulkner, paragraph 1), is buried among the soldiers who died during the Civil War battle of Jefferson. By identifying Miss Emily with the military occupants of the cemetery, rather than the other townsfolk buried there, it suggests that this is the peer group to which Miss Emily belongs. This description of her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She "vanquished them, horse and foot as she had vanquished their fathers thirty years before about the smell" (Faulkner, paragraph 15). "Vanquish" is a strong term specifically denoting to overcome in battle. The addition of the phrase "horse and foot" is a reference to the cavalry and the infantry. Miss Emily has won a complete military victory over the town, then, and the narrator makes clear this has happened before. In addition to Miss Emily's victories in the battle over the taxes and the battle over the smell, Miss Emily won the battle against putting up house numbers and a mailbox, the battle with the Baptist minister, and the battle against the druggist. Rather than obey the law and disclose the purpose of the poison, Miss Emily is compared to a flag that stands erect and straining in the wind, another image easily drawn from a battle field in which the victor's flag waves proudly over the place of battle (O'Brien, 104). Faulkner gives us only one battle that Miss Emily loses to the town – the burial of her father. Although she fought valiantly for three days, the town's forces prevailed, and her father was buried. However, it was done quickly, whether because of the decay of the body or the town's fear of Miss Emily's wrath it is not disclosed. What we do know, though, is that Miss Emily is painted with adjectives that could easily describe a war general: impervious, vigorous, iron–gray. She is described as an idol in a niche watching over the town. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. A Rose for Emily: Factors the Impacted Miss Emily's Behavior A Rose for Emily: Factors the Impacted Miss Emily's Behavior "A Rose for Emily" is a fictional short story written by 1949 Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner. Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is about an aristocratic woman who lived a very secretive and unusual life. Miss Emily had always been very sheltered by her father. He was the only man in her life and after his death, her behavior became even more unnatural. However her father's death cannot be seen as the only cause of Miss Emily's insanity. Miss Emily's behavior was also influenced by her own expectations of herself, the townspeople's lack of authority over her, and her neighbor's infatuation with her. The narrator tells us the Griersons had always had always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrator also reveals that Miss Emily had too much pride to accept any charity or pity from others. Miss Emily knew no authority. The townspeople would at times attempt some type of control, but they gave in easily when Miss Emily resisted. When the man who had deceived her into not paying taxes passed away, the next generation of alderman attempted to make Miss Emily once again pay her taxes. They met no success in doing so and did nothing further. The same was so when Miss Emily bought arsenic. The pharmacist requested a reason for buying it, but without an answer, he let Miss Emily do as she pleased. When a disgusting odor came from Miss Emily's House, instead of telling her to fix the problem and hurt her pride, four men attempted to fix it themselves in secret. Overall Miss Emily answered to no one. The information that we do have about Miss Emily's genuinely mysterious life was obtained through her prying neighbors. They did everything possible, without disrespect, to find out more about her. They knew where she had been, with whom, and when. The secrecy of Miss Emily's life fascinated everyone that knew her. The more that time went on and the more that neighbors pried, the less Miss Emily appeared until soon she was hardly seen at all and let no one into her home. Even at Miss Emily's funeral the whole town came to satisfy some of their curiosity. Miss Emily seemed to enjoy being secretive and did her best to be so. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Miss Emily Grierson In Faulkner's A Rose For Emily Miss Emily Grierson, the main character in the short story "A Rose For Emily" was a very peculiar woman. Often prideful and aloof towards others, Emily stands her ground as a static character in Faulkner's work. She is withdrawn from the ever–changing world around her, living in a world of delusions and neglect. Although many pitied this fallen monument, she learned to live in isolation in her decaying home. Surrounded by lavish furnishing and the only people desperate enough for her love; a silent Negro servant, and a dead lover. It seems as if young Emily Grierson had a quintessential life. Her family, as we know consisted just of her father, was one of the wealthiest in their small town of Jefferson, Mississippi. Mr. Grierson, who was briefly mentioned before his passing, was a very prideful man with a lot of name recognition. Everyone in town knew the Grierson's and their mysterious daughter Emily. Although Mr. Grierson had a minimal impact on the town and those who resided within its limits, he had an unimaginable impact on his daughters' life. Behind the perfectly manicured walls of their southern home, Emily's father had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And when the new generation of aldermen rode into town to collect what was theirs, Emily never budged. "I received a paper, yes," Miss Emily said. "Perhaps he considers himself the sheriff . . . I have no taxes in Jefferson." They brought forth their best men, but Emily's condescending attitude vanquished them every time. She never would accept the advancing world around her.
