2. INTRODUCTION
•Lauha Kalpas and mandura kalpas are important
formulations which constitutes Lauha bhasma (calx of
iron) and mandura bhasma (calx of Ferric oxide) as the
major ingredient along with the other herbal
ingredients. These formulations have “Lauha” as suffix
in their name. Some Lauha Kalpas possess other
mineral ingredients including mercury along with Lauha
as main ingredient.
•Present presentation is based on Lauha and mandura
kalpana according to C.C.I.M. Syllabus for M.D. Final
year curriculum of Rasa Shastra and Bhaishajya kalpana

•Panchalavana (5 types of salt)
•Decoction of Triphala
•Decoction of Shalsaradi gana (Su. Sutra sthana 38/12)
•Cow dung cake
•Wooden coal of kher plant (Senegalia catechu)
Lauha patra is subjected to heating by
gomayagni (cow dung cake) and then dipped in decoction
of triphala and shalsaradi gana 16 times each and then
again heated over coal of kher, after cooling subjected to
powder form.

Dose- 2 methods are mentioned to take this drug
a. It is to be taken according to agni bala i.e. Digestive
capacity of one’s along with ghrita and madhu.
b. In dose of 1 tula (4.8 Kg) it curs kustha (skin
disorders), meha (diabetes and its complications),
meda roga (obesity and dyslipidemia), sotha
(odema), pandu (anaemia), unmada (insanity),
apasmara (epilepsy) and enhances longevity for 100
years.

Guggula is suspended in dola yantra and decoction of drugs
from 2-10 is prepared in given amount of water, after
kwatha is prepared guggula is removed from dola yantra.
Later guggula drugs from 11-13 are added in tamra patra
(copper vessel) and subjected to paaka, after cooling drugs
from 14-23 are added and mixed well. Preserved in
sterilised patra.
Dose- 1 karsha (12 gm) for 1 month
Anupana- Milk and jangala mamsa
Apathya (unwholesome)- during its consumption kadli
(banana), kanda (tubers), kanjik (sour liquid), karmarda
(Carissa carandas), karira (Capparis decidua), karela (bitter
gourd) are contraindicated.

•Kustha (skin disorders), jwarahara (anti-pyretic), kaamla
(jaundice), pandu (anaemia), sotha (oedema), bhagandara
(fistula).
•Moorcha, moha (altered level of consciousness) , unmada
(insanity), vishahara, gara vishahara (removes poison and
artificial poison from body).
•Sthaulyahara and said to be best medicine for medo roga
(reduces weight and hypolipidemic in action).
•Balyam, rasayanam, medhyam, vajikarnam, srikaram,
putrajananama, vali-palit nasanama (having anti-ageing
properties and aphrodisiacs properties).

Indications-
•Before food it pacifies Vata and Pitta disorders
•In between food nullifies Vishtambha jeerna and
burning disorders
•After food it nullifies any complications arising due to
food and also ease up the digestion.
- It is beneficial for eyes, hairs, Kapha-pitta disorders,
abdominal pain and amlapitta (hyperacidity), anaemia,
jaundice and also enhances the complexion of skin.

Method-
•Parada and gandhaka are mixed to form Kajjali (black suphide
of mercury)
Made into parpati kalpana
Remaining drugs are added to this parpati and mixed
homogenously by triturating it with either water or kumari
swarasa (Aloe vera extract) to form chakrika (pellets)
After it is dried, this chakrika is kept amidst Muktaghriha (oyster’s
shell) and subjected to laghu puta
After self cooling drug is removed and again grinded to obtain the
formulation
