Gandhaka (Sulphur) is an important element in Rasa Shastra. It found its use for dhatuvada as well as dehavada. Current slide emphasis use of Gandhaka in clinical practice as mentioned by Rasa Tarangani.
2. INTRODUCTION TO GANDHAKA
Gandhaka is included in uparasas varga in rasa text. Stands
next to Mercury in importance and its importance is revealed
in various procedures like jarana etc.
In nature native Sulphur is available in very small quanttity. It
is generally found in mineral form compounded with Iron,
Copper, Lead, Mercury, Silver and other metals. It is also
found in following animal and vegetable products.
A) Eggs, Blood, Milk, Bile etc
B) mustard, carrot, garlic
3. NORMAL DOSE OF GANDHAKA:
As per Rasa Tarangani normal dose of Purified
Gandhaka is 1-8 ratti i.e. 125 mg – 1 gm.
Rasa Tarangani kara has given various uses of
Gandhaka in various diseases.
4. Rheumatoid arthritis and Sciatica- applied
externally over the swelling.
ENT disorders and decreased digestive fire- it is
used with Tripahala kashaya in therapeutic doses.
Tuberculosis like symptoms- with decoction of
Adhatoda vasica.
Cough and cold- with decoction of Solanum
xanthocarpum.
5. Skin disorders- with ripened banana fruit.
General weakness- with powder of Plumbago
zeylanica roots.
Piles- with sesame seeds powder or with yastimadhu,
sugar, senna leaves and misreya (Foeniculum vulgare)
taken in equal quantity cures all disorders related to
rectum.
For all diseases related to vitiated phlegm- tablets
prepared with Gugglu and Triphala used for two
months continuously treats all kaphaja disorders.
6. Tuberculosis and other nodules of body- with oil
of jyotismati, vacha churna and fresh curd taken
together in equal quantity for one month.
Above combination can also be taken by
healthy person for rejuvenating therapy.
External application for skin disorders-
- Purified Litharge (PbO)
- Purified Borax (Na2B4O7.10H2O)
- Karpura
- Purified Gandhaka
Altogether mixed with Coconut oil when applied ove
skin cures chronic and severe itching.
7. For male infertility- when taken along with root
powder of bombax malabaricum and milk for one
month increases the volume of semen and sperm count.
Leprosy like skin diseases- taken along with honey
followed by juice of Indian gooseberry.
