On Liberty Essay
Analysis amp; Critique of
J.S. Mill s On Liberty
The perception of liberty has been an issue that has bewildered the human race for a long time. It
seems with every aspiring leader comes a new definition of liberty, some more realistic than others.
We have seen, though, that some tend to have a grasp of what true liberty is. One of these scholars was
the English philosopher and economist J.S. Mill. Mill s On Liberty provided a great example of what,
in his opinion, liberty is and how it is to be protected. In this essay we will examine Mill s ideals
concerning liberty and point out a few things he may not have been realistic about.

Not to silence them in favor of having no opposition. All that is accomplished by this is the
handicapping of society, for it is true in every aspect of life that the only way to improve is to go
against opposition and to learn from it. Along these lines it would make sense that the most important
ideas out there are the unpopular ones because these are the issues that are being neglected.
The protection of this quot;individuality quot; poses a problem. What causes harm and what ultimately
leads to good? When should government step in and when should it let things be? Knowing where that
line is tough. Mill s answer to this is that society has jurisdiction over every aspect of behavior that,
quot;affects prejudicially the interests of others. quot; More specifically society has no interest in the
aspects of one s life that affect only the individual acting, or others, for that matter, that are affect at
their own consent. Society has no right to keep a person from doing with his life what they wish, and
it is stupid to do so their own good for nobody will every truly know what someone else aspires to do.
Though Mill rejects the concept of the social contract he does believe that people do have obligations
to the society in exchange for the protection of their freedom. And if one acts in a manner that harms
the society as a whole then they are subject to punishment. Not

Shakespeare Essay example
Shakespeare
Who was Shakespeare? Was he a man from Stratford Upon Avon who started with little and became
the greatest English author to ever live; or was he a privileged Earl who was a favorite at Queen
Elizabeth s court? That is the great mystery. This particular mystery is difficult to solve because of the
lack of documentary evidence. The Elizabethans did not believe in getting everything in writing as
people do today. Therefore, the truth may never be known with certainty. However, evidence does
exist to support at least two theories about the Shakespearean authorship: one that the man from
Stratford wrote the works, the other that Edward de Vere the Earl of Oxford was the author. The
question then becomes, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He then searched for a man of the same time period who met these criteria (Ogburn). The
characteristics that come up again and again in the debates include: the author s education and
knowledge of the Classics, law, and Italy; and the documents and poems of the time that have
survived.
The most controversial and subjective argument stems from the apparent wealth of knowledge
possessed by the Shakespearean author. Throughout the plays and sonnets, he makes numerous
classical allusions. Oxfordians claim that the Shakespeare from Stratford (usually referred to as
Shakspere in the debates) could not have possessed the necessary knowledge to draw upon these
sources. Tom Bethell, another noted Oxfordian, writes that Shakspere is not known to have attended
Stratford grammar school ... [and] if he was a pupil, he probably was not one for long (Bethell).
However, respected Stratfordian Irvin Matus argues that no records of anyone attending the school
exist before the 1800 s (Matus). He also notes that Ben Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare s and a
revered playwright, did not have much more than a few years of rudimentary schooling and that there
are no attendance records for Jonson s school before 1715 (Matus). On his comprehensive Stratfordian
website, David Kathman asserts that Shakespeare s classical knowledge, while impressive by our
standards, was

Kate O Hare, Jack London, And Assata Shakur
The American judicial system is one that convicts and incarcerate prisoners for various crimes. When
someone commits a crime, it is the judicial system s responsibility to enforce and apply the laws.
Under United States legislation, criminals are innocent until proven guilty in a court trial, but the
judicial system during the twentieth century did not properly give them fair trials. Instead, the court
system convicted many prisoners guilty of crimes they supposedly committed. This situation created
the start of a new and corrupt judicial system because prisoners could not plead their case in court.
Kate O Hare, Jack London, and Assata Shakur provide an accurate and historical view of the
American judicial system as unethical because many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of convicts receiving fair trials and being treated equally, the judicial system discriminated
against poverty stricken people and allowed brutal treatment and conditions. Prisons in America
contained a high percentage of poor people because they could not afford bail or lawyers. The judicial
system had no respect towards the poor because they were viewed as uneducated people. Since the
rich had the finances to pay for lawyers and bail, they were less likely to be incarcerated. Money
showed respect, intelligence, and power for wealthy people. Besides discrimination being an issue for
the judicial system, unfair trials for convicts also occurred. Prisoners were not given the chance to
plead guilty or not guilty in a courtroom because they did not have lawyers appointed to them. The
judge solely decided whether to convict a criminal guilty or not guilty of the crime they supposedly
committed. It was common for prisoners to be incarcerated for crimes they never committed because
the judicial system allowed unfair trials. Prisoners experienced brutal and inhumane treatments and
conditions that include physical abuse, unsanitary living environments, and the possibility of
contracting diseases. The judicial system selfishly altered the laws for their own well being. They
benefitted from the changes and were never held accountable for the acts they allowed and committed.
This created the corruption in

Marriott Case Study
History of Marriott
Marriott was founded in 1927 by the married couple of J. Willard and Alice Marriott. Their company
started off as A W root beer stand in Washington D.C. While in the restaurant franchise business, they
introduced two major ideas with the Eastern Coast s first drive in capable restaurant and airline
catering for passengers to consume boxed lunches mid flight. Later in 1953, Hot Shoppes,
Incorporated transitions to public by selling out in two hours of trading at $10.25 per share. Five years
later, Marriot makes a quintessential move into the hotel business by opening the earliest motor hotel
in Arlington, Virginia. Over the next quarter century, the brand opens its first international hotel,
becomes the first hotel company to enter the cruise business, and announces the first Courtyard hotel
for high level business travelers to lodge with. Marriot offers multiple brands in the late 1900s that
span over Europe and Africa, along with other countries and continents. Finally, Marriott becomes the
#1 hospitality company in the world with more than 5,700 properties across the world.
Evaluation of Marriott
Marriott is undoubtedly a thriving business in the top tier of the hospitality industry. Any person does
not have to look any further than their stock price of over 100 dollars per share or their market cap
worth around 39.79 billion dollars. In class, we discussed customer service as an important part to

Analysis Of Rajeev Ravisankar s Sweatshop Oppression
In his opinion essay, Sweatshop Oppression, published in the student newspaper, The Lantern, at Ohio
State University, writer Rajeev Ravisankar uses his article as a platform to raise awareness about the
deplorable conditions in sweatshops. Ravisankar awakens his readers from their slumber and brings to
light the fact that they are partly responsible for the problem. His first goal in the essay is to designate
college students as conscious consumers who look to purchase goods at the lowest prices. Then he
makes the connection between this type of low cost consumerism and the high human cost that
workers are forced to pay in sweatshops. His second goal is to place the real burden of responsibility
directly with the companies that perpetuate this system of exploitation. Finally, he proposes what can
be done about it. By establishing a relationship that includes himself in the audience, working to
assign responsibility to the reader, and keeping them emotionally invested, Ravisankar makes a
powerful argument that eventually prompts his student reader to take responsibility for their actions
and make a change. For Ravisankar s argument to be effective, he makes a connection with the
readers. He accomplishes this by including himself in the audience and, also, by earning their trust.
This style of writing uses us and we in the dialog which establishes himself as being part of the
conversation. To make the trust connection with his readers, he first clarifies how their low cost
consumerism is partly responsible for the problem, but he does so in an empathetic way. He sees their
position as, being the poor college students that we all are, which is an understandable way of
including himself while consciously giving the students a personal stake in the argument and
assigning them responsibility. In this way, the writer immediately connects with his audience and
draws them in by being sympathetic to their needs. After he gains their trust, he works toward gaining
sympathy for the worker who are forced to pay the price for the students irresponsible but
unintentional choices. During this discussion of the problem, Ravisankar writes as if he is assuming
that the students are unaware of how much their

Definition of alcoholism
According to mayo clinic, alcoholism is an inability to control the desire to consume alcoholic

In 1862, I entered the battle of Gettysburg as a Confederate soldier. My post was assigned to me as a

Essay On The Cultural Invasion Of Canada
The American Cultural Invasion of Canada
Canada s national obsession seems to be its own identity. For many years Canada has feared the
increasing influence of its North American neighbors on its culture the United States . It has become a
matter of growing concern for the people of power and influence in Canada to maintain their separate
cultural identity and to promote their own cultural norms. Gaetan Tremblay presents his views on this
topic and does this from the perspective of a person living and working in Quebec.

The Quebec government controls communications in its own territory to defend its own Quebecois
culture which try to stand on its own, separate from the North American. The feature that creates this
difference is the fact that they have a different language when compared to the rest of the continent.
This generally makes it easier to protect their culture. Unlike the Canadian government, America on
the other hand operates communication in a free trade environment just like any other commodity and
is deeply committed to deregulation allowing free competition. Along with this, America also tries to
pressurize its neighbors to follow the same pattern set by them. They do this because they are not
insecure about their culture the way Canada or Quebec is. The American government does not force or
intervene and make policies to encourage or promote their culture since they are well aware of the fact
that their culture is taking over the continent and slowly seeping in to the media markets all over the
world; therefore knowing that their cultural identity is far from danger. The broadcasting in America is
so well established and technologically advanced that they do not fear to operate in free market
conditions because they are the ones who are more likely to benefit from this. On the other hand
Quebec and Canada are not yet ready to face the fierce competition from United States while
struggling to maintain their own identities.

Edison believed that the phonograph would have a positive effect on business, culture, and education.
Out of the invention of the phonograph, three distinct qualities were discovered of recorded music:
portability, affordability, and repeatability. Thanks to the phonograph and its portability, Americans
could hear the classics through recordings since professional musicians never ventured to the rural
areas. Portability would have meant nothing if not for its affordability. In 1890 the cost of the
phonograph was $40, and by the 1900 s it was reduced down to five dollars. Poor blacks could also
afford the phonograph, and in their minds it was a way to try and achieve equalities among whites by
listening and learning their culture. Repeatability was believed to serve two main functions: to single
out the good music versus the bad and to help listeners to appreciate the art of the classics. Due to the
fact that recording music had a maximum of three to four minutes, musicians had to drastically cut the
time of their music to make more money. The phonograph was later called a gramophone and then it
was known as the wax cylinder. The phonograph went out of style when the FM radio was invented
and spread throughout American homes.

rapid rise of demand overwhelmed the company s capacity. Chris King and her team had put a lot of

had started out by setting very bold targets (a BHAG if you will) of achieving growth levels that were
unimaginable at the time and most importantly of becoming a leader in the business of microchip

as being systematic, detail oriented, methodical basically the key skills needed to construct a solid
working plan. King was result oriented, therefore once the preliminary research was conducted and
the team had a clear idea of who to target, they had the green light to aggressively achieve sales any
way possible. The driving idea was the audacious goal of becoming the leader in the business,
whereas the exact route to how this would be reached wasn t clearly outlined.
The first of the line of mistakes was the proposition to the client that with IBM anything was possible.
King promised products that hadn t even fully been developed yet and agreed to supplying shipments
that the company had no capacity for. This for one created some internal discontent as manufacturing
couldn t come to terms with King s requirements. Communication became an internal issue between
the departments. Moreover, the clients became accustomed to the unit considering and providing for
their every need. In reality these promises weren t backed up and functioned solely due to King s
persuasive powers and the ability to maintain strong relationships in and outside the company.

Human Skin
1.1. Anatomy and Function of Skin:
The Human skin is the largest single organ of the body, with a surface area of one to two square
meters and accounts for approximately 16% of total body weight. It protects the body as an outer
barrier from external pathogenic factors and excessive water loss. The skin is composed of three main
layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis or subcutaneous layer1,2.
Epidermis:
The epidermis is the outermost layer of mammalian skin and contains four types of cells:
keratinocytes, which make up 90% of the cells found in this layer, Langerhans cells, melanocytes, and

Routes of skin penetration:
There are two diffusional routes to penetrate into human skin: the transappendageal and the
transepidermal routes.
The transappendageal route or so called the skin shunts comprises transport via hair follicles, sweat
ducts and sebaceous glands. There is relatively small surface area (approximately less than 0.1% of
total surface) for this route and may be of some importance for ionic molecules or large polar
compounds. In addition, the relative surface area of the shunts in different areas of the body may be
various. For instance, in the scalp, the density and size of hair follicles are much greater than in other
location on the skin such as on the back12.
The transepidermal pathway is principally responsible for diffusion across the skin. This route can be
defined as the pathway where compounds permeate across the stratum corneum by using two different
passages: the transcellular and the intercellular13,14.
The intercellular pathway is generally regarded as the main route of permeation of most compounds
and provides a significant route by enhancing interaction with lipid remains in the corneocytes. The
transcellular (a polar pathway) pass through corneocytes and interleaving lipids15,16. Figure 1

Christmas Playlist Suggestions For Holiday Parties Essay
Christmas Playlist Suggestions for Holiday Parties
Another year has quickly passed and it s time again to start preparing for the holiday season. Besides
the torture of finding parking spaces at the mall, scrambling for last minute gifts, and scouring for the
perfect tree, there are many more spirited traditions to look forward to. One of them being your
holiday Christmas party! I think it s one of the most important things we can do with our family and
friends, as it s a time to harness the true spirit behind this highly commercialized holiday. With that
being said, your party cannot be complete without holiday music adding to the ambiance of the
festivities.
Each holiday season, the radio stations play our favorite Christmas tunes around the clock and a blast
of holiday cheer is heard over the loud speakers at department stores. Music is everywhere, and it
plays a major part of the holiday season. I ve prepared one of my own personal Christmas play lists
that was created with tender loving care. Although there are hundreds of versions of our favorites to
choose from, a good play list is eclectic with enough of a mix that will guarantee a special memory for
someone in the crowd. There should be a touch of nostalgia from Christmas past, and more
contemporary choices to keep it fresh and fun.
The following songs, listed in no particular order, are going to be an amazing soundtrack for your
holiday bashes this year.
All I Want For Christmas Is You Mariah Carey

The Is A Efficient Mode Of Transportation
Over the years, cycling has been proven to be the cleanest and most efficient mode of transportation,
which explains the increasing demand to further develop its sustainability (Tripodi 2015, p. 143). Bike
sharing systems have provided a means of transportation in dense cities with their minor infrastructure
requirements and promise of a cleaner future. Public bicycle programs have grown in popularity in
recent years because of their initiatives to increase cycle usage, the benefit of connectivity without the
troubles of personal vehicles, and the decrease of environmental impacts as a result of our transport
activities (DeMaio 2009, p. 41). The original concept of these systems had many flaws, but as
technology has developed to improve the tracking system, rapid expansion continues throughout
Europe and across the globe. With growing climate change and the dependence on oil becoming more
of a problem, people are beginning to look towards more responsible ways of living (Vidalis, et al.
2010, p. 1). Driving less is one of the easiest ways to reduce one s carbon footprint, and is a key factor
in the success surrounding increased cycling. In the U.S., over 50 percent of all car trips are five miles
or less (Vidalis, et al. 2010, p. 3). By cutting down on unnecessary car trips, the release of air
pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and lead could be drastically
reduced in larger cities. The environmental benefits, along with the health aspect

My Cultural Aspects Of My Culture In Cape Verdean
A culture is a set of characteristics of a particular group of people. It emcopasses language, social
aspect, such as relegion, cuisine, social habits,, music, and arts. I considered my culture to be Cape
Verdean. I was born and raised in Cape Verde until I was fourteen. My country was colonized by the
Portuguese, so there are a lot common culture aspects between Cape Verde and Portugal . One of the
results of colonization was implementation of catholicism as a primary religion in my country. It was
not until recent years that other forms of religious started to emerge in Cape Verde. However, for some
people who strong practice catholicism there is a strong push back against those who aren t from the
same religion. This has raised a lot religion conflict not only with foreign people who come to Cape
verde from different countries in Africa, but it has also originated conflicts amongst Cape Verdeans
who have a different belief.
Into what region or geographical section or world were you born? What messages have you received
about people from this region or geographical area?
Cape Verde is located right in center of the Atlantic Ocean, 500 km off the Western Coast of Africa. In
recent years, more people have started to questioning the location of Cape Verde because unlike other
countries in Africa, Cape Verde is located outside of the African continent. I identify myself to be
African because I see that there is a lot cultural similarities between my country

Walgreen Company Case Analysis
ABOUT WALGREEN
The Walgreen Company (Walgreens) is the largest drug retailing chain in the United States. It was
founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901. As of May 31, 2014, the company operated 8,217 stores in all
50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Walgreens provides

the United States through its retail drugstores, Walgreens Health Services division, and Walgreens
Health and Wellness division. Walgreens also runs several online stores, such as:
Beauty.com,Drugstore.com and VisionDirect.com. They have gained prominence through operational
excellence and wise selection of real estate for its outlets.
THE PROBLEM
The strategic debate with Walgreen emerged when after 34 years of record profits; it finally made a
loss in 2009. Walgreen faced competition not only from drug retailers like CVS and Rite Aid; but also
from retailers like Wal Mart. The problem therefore is what strategy Walgreen will pursue to grow and
stay relevant with the coming times?
THE SOLUTION
The possible strategies Walgreen could pursue are:

Invest in technology to improve health services delivery, online retailing and cut redundancies in day
to day activities of pharmacists. Better designed software would be able to keep track of customer
preferences and past records. A lot of mechanical work one by pharmacists could be automated
therefore freeing up pharmacists to focus more on customers. Despite being a specialty pharmacy,
Walgreen ventured into grocery items and general merchandise to improve the bottom line. Integrating
all categories into software would enable better warehouse management and help keep inventories at a

What Is Working Towards A Solution Essay
Working towards a solution
Personal Level
Working towards a solution needs to start at the personal level because in order to change the world,
individuals need to first be willing to change themselves. There are many opportunities to participate
on a personal level to help combat hunger. One way to personally fight hunger and increase food
security is to grow your own produce and produce for your neighbor. By growing personal vegetables,
reliance on grocery stores for fresh produce is taken out of the picture. Less waste is produced when
food is personally grown and it is inexpensive. Serving food at a homeless shelter or food pantry
nearby is another personal way to get involved. Volunteering time is beneficial for both the volunteer

expected that if a person regularly eats a meal at Bistro163 and cannot pay, they should volunteer their
time as a payment. It is also an expectation that patrons pay more than the suggested price in order to
help others have a meal. It is a pay it forward system. Places like Bistro163 address hunger in a
dignified manner while at the same time building relationships throughout the community. If more
communities adopted this idea, areas of food insecurity could turn into places where worrying about
food becomes a thing of the past.
National Level
Communities that work together can create a difference within their own town or state and also on a
national level. Natural disasters have a big impact on people and food security, so providing
emergency assistance is one way a person could have a national effect on fighting hunger. Currently in
the US, many people are facing the effects of hurricane s firsthand. A hurricane makes it challenging
for travel, leaving grocery stores empty and poorly stocked. Many people are willing to volunteer and
travel to places of natural disaster to provide aid to those in need. Organizations such as the United

Air Jordan Vs Converse Essay
Footwear also known as shoes was invented to protect a person s foot while doing various activities,
primarily created for functional and practical use. However, shoe design has constantly evolved
throughout history and from culture to culture. The notion of complementing your outfit with the
perfect shoe has been the impetus of design and many styles of shoes; such as high heels, flats and
sneakers. Modern footwear varies widely in design, comfortability and cost. Nike is a multinational
company that offers many types of footwear and has been a leading pioneer in the retail market for
decades. Air Jordan s and Converse are notably Nike s most proverbial brands. These two brands are a
quintessential example of a price difference within the same corporation. ... Show more content on

The demand for different designs and styles, eventually changed the cost and the history of these
ordinary sneakers. Air Jordan s , notably the most famous sneaker ever made, is designed and owned
by Michael Jordan. Footwear sales sky rocketed in 1984, when Michael Jordan signed a contract to
wear the now famous Air Jordan. Air Jordan is manufactured in China and allegedly costs Nike a little
over $16 to make a pair. Yet, Air Jordan s are priced at anywhere between $100 to $600 a pair,
depending on the style and color.
The pricing strategy for this brand is value based. The selling price is determined not by the cost of the
goods, but by the status that buyers think they are valued. Consumers measure the quality of Air
Jordan s by the quality of Michael Jordan s skillful tactics on the basketball courts and are willing to
pay a pretty penny to be like Mike, hence their well known motto I want to be, I want to be like Mike.
Statically, the value based price strategy is effective for this brand because Air Jordan continues to be
Nike s best selling shoes, even after Michael Jordan s

Management Accounting And Control Systems Essay
In the last 20 years, the business environment has changed dramatically with the widespread adoption
of the internet and other massive technological advances, it has been argued that with this new and
volatile environment that management accounting and control systems are more important than ever to
deal with the changing times. In this essay we will discuss whether management accounting and
control systems are important in the new business environment, major changes to the business
environment and how they have changed the role of management accounting and control systems, and
finally we will study an organisation and recent changes that have affected its business environment.
If we look at the definition of management accounting, it states that management accounting is a
process that helps managers make informed decisions by creating planning and performance
management systems that help to control a business and guide it to identify and realise the businesses
strategy (Institute of Management Accounants, 2008). With new technology being created over the last
20 years, it is clear that business environments have changed wildly and will require managers to
make very vital decisions regarding the operation of a business in order to succeed in the new
environment. For example, the structure of organisations all around the world have moved to a more
decentralised structure compared to the classical hierarchal structure (Chenhall Morris, 1986), this
means there is more

Teach Live Experience
Going into the Teach Live session I was very excited and could not wait to experience what it would
be like to teach a real lesson. At first when hearing about the assignment I thought to myself this was
going to be hard for me to do. This is so because I am a very shy and closed off person, my voice gets
shaky when I have to speak in front of a group, and I have never done anything such as a Teach Life
lesson before. The day of the Teach Live I was jittery and elated that whole day, I just knew I was
going to kill it. I arrived 15 minutes early and Mr. C made sure I felt very comfortable and was ready.
While sitting there preparing to teach the lesson I had chosen, fear and nervousness swept over me and
I began to worry. A few minutes before I began the Teach Live session all the fear and negativity left
my mind and body. Then when the session began and I saw the virtual students a smile grew on my
face, sending a cooling, calm sensation through my body.
I found this experience very helpful. It gave me that final confirmation that I need in deciding if
teaching students was how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. Teaching a lesson, learning, and
gaining experience before entering an actual classroom, I feel is what every education major should
experience. I loved the Teach Live session, it is a great way to rid all of the nervousness, help you
learn from your mistakes, and better prepare you for your future of becoming a teacher. If you happen

Choolesterol Error
Error in the metabolism of an individual is another major risk factor of atherosclerosis and it involves
the abnormal change of lipoproteins and changes in its functional roles (McCrindle, 2007).
The first main type of cholesterol is the low density lipoprotein (LDL) and it referred to as the bad
cholesterol because it attaches to the atherosclerotic lesions on the endothelium of the arterial wall
(Schaefer, 2010). The other type of cholesterol is the high density lipoproteins (HDL), it acts as a
scavenger and it is referred to as the good cholesterol, because it removes the cholesterol from the
arterial wall (Schaefer, 2010).

The Federalist Papers By John Jay
The Federalist Papers
This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the
design of Providence that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a ban of brethren, united to each
other by the strongest of ties, should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien
sovereignties. (Jay 1787) This was written by John Jay in one of a collection of 85 essays written by
John Jay, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton known as The Federalist Papers. (Henretta,
Edwards, Self, 2012) The Federalist Papers were written during a time of uncertainty, when a new
nation was attempting to do what no other nation in the world had ever done, set up a government of
the people, by the people and for the people. These essays were influential, well written and published
at a juncture in history where they were needed the most. The Federalists Papers were instrumental to
the ratification of the U.S. Constitution and perhaps some of the most important documents in U.S.
national history for without the Federalists Papers, our constitution and nation would not be what they
are today. The end of the revolutionary war with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783 meant the
great experiment was really about to begin. It really boiled down to a simple question, can man govern
himself? A revolution occurred against the most powerful empire in the world because the founding
fathers believed the answer to be yes . For this to

  • 2. On Liberty Essay Analysis amp; Critique of J.S. Mill s On Liberty The perception of liberty has been an issue that has bewildered the human race for a long time. It seems with every aspiring leader comes a new definition of liberty, some more realistic than others. We have seen, though, that some tend to have a grasp of what true liberty is. One of these scholars was the English philosopher and economist J.S. Mill. Mill s On Liberty provided a great example of what, in his opinion, liberty is and how it is to be protected. In this essay we will examine Mill s ideals concerning liberty and point out a few things he may not have been realistic about. For Mill, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not to silence them in favor of having no opposition. All that is accomplished by this is the handicapping of society, for it is true in every aspect of life that the only way to improve is to go against opposition and to learn from it. Along these lines it would make sense that the most important ideas out there are the unpopular ones because these are the issues that are being neglected. The protection of this quot;individuality quot; poses a problem. What causes harm and what ultimately leads to good? When should government step in and when should it let things be? Knowing where that line is tough. Mill s answer to this is that society has jurisdiction over every aspect of behavior that, quot;affects prejudicially the interests of others. quot; More specifically society has no interest in the aspects of one s life that affect only the individual acting, or others, for that matter, that are affect at their own consent. Society has no right to keep a person from doing with his life what they wish, and it is stupid to do so their own good for nobody will every truly know what someone else aspires to do. Though Mill rejects the concept of the social contract he does believe that people do have obligations to the society in exchange for the protection of their freedom. • 4. Shakespeare Essay example Shakespeare Who was Shakespeare? Was he a man from Stratford Upon Avon who started with little and became the greatest English author to ever live; or was he a privileged Earl who was a favorite at Queen Elizabeth s court? That is the great mystery. This particular mystery is difficult to solve because of the lack of documentary evidence. The Elizabethans did not believe in getting everything in writing as people do today. Therefore, the truth may never be known with certainty. However, evidence does exist to support at least two theories about the Shakespearean authorship: one that the man from Stratford wrote the works, the other that Edward de Vere the Earl of Oxford was the author. The question then becomes, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He then searched for a man of the same time period who met these criteria (Ogburn). The characteristics that come up again and again in the debates include: the author s education and knowledge of the Classics, law, and Italy; and the documents and poems of the time that have survived. The most controversial and subjective argument stems from the apparent wealth of knowledge possessed by the Shakespearean author. Throughout the plays and sonnets, he makes numerous classical allusions. Oxfordians claim that the Shakespeare from Stratford (usually referred to as Shakspere in the debates) could not have possessed the necessary knowledge to draw upon these sources. Tom Bethell, another noted Oxfordian, writes that Shakspere is not known to have attended Stratford grammar school ... [and] if he was a pupil, he probably was not one for long (Bethell). However, respected Stratfordian Irvin Matus argues that no records of anyone attending the school exist before the 1800 s (Matus). He also notes that Ben Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare s and a revered playwright, did not have much more than a few years of rudimentary schooling and that there are no attendance records for Jonson s school before 1715 (Matus). When someone commits a crime, it is the judicial system s responsibility to enforce and apply the laws. Under United States legislation, criminals are innocent until proven guilty in a court trial, but the judicial system during the twentieth century did not properly give them fair trials. Instead, the court system convicted many prisoners guilty of crimes they supposedly committed. This situation created the start of a new and corrupt judicial system because prisoners could not plead their case in court. Instead of convicts receiving fair trials and being treated equally, the judicial system discriminated against poverty stricken people and allowed brutal treatment and conditions. Prisons in America contained a high percentage of poor people because they could not afford bail or lawyers. The judicial system had no respect towards the poor because they were viewed as uneducated people. Since the rich had the finances to pay for lawyers and bail, they were less likely to be incarcerated. Money showed respect, intelligence, and power for wealthy people. Besides discrimination being an issue for the judicial system, unfair trials for convicts also occurred. Prisoners were not given the chance to plead guilty or not guilty in a courtroom because they did not have lawyers appointed to them. The judge solely decided whether to convict a criminal guilty or not guilty of the crime they supposedly committed. It was common for prisoners to be incarcerated for crimes they never committed because the judicial system allowed unfair trials. Prisoners experienced brutal and inhumane treatments and conditions that include physical abuse, unsanitary living environments, and the possibility of contracting diseases. The judicial system selfishly altered the laws for their own well being. They benefitted from the changes and were never held accountable for the acts they allowed and committed. • 10. Analysis Of Rajeev Ravisankar s Sweatshop Oppression In his opinion essay, Sweatshop Oppression, published in the student newspaper, The Lantern, at Ohio State University, writer Rajeev Ravisankar uses his article as a platform to raise awareness about the deplorable conditions in sweatshops. Ravisankar awakens his readers from their slumber and brings to light the fact that they are partly responsible for the problem. His first goal in the essay is to designate college students as conscious consumers who look to purchase goods at the lowest prices. Then he makes the connection between this type of low cost consumerism and the high human cost that workers are forced to pay in sweatshops. His second goal is to place the real burden of responsibility directly with the companies that perpetuate this system of exploitation. Finally, he proposes what can be done about it. By establishing a relationship that includes himself in the audience, working to assign responsibility to the reader, and keeping them emotionally invested, Ravisankar makes a powerful argument that eventually prompts his student reader to take responsibility for their actions and make a change. For Ravisankar s argument to be effective, he makes a connection with the readers. He accomplishes this by including himself in the audience and, also, by earning their trust. This style of writing uses us and we in the dialog which establishes himself as being part of the conversation. To make the trust connection with his readers, he first clarifies how their low cost consumerism is partly responsible for the problem, but he does so in an empathetic way. He sees their position as, being the poor college students that we all are, which is an understandable way of including himself while consciously giving the students a personal stake in the argument and assigning them responsibility. In this way, the writer immediately connects with his audience and draws them in by being sympathetic to their needs. After he gains their trust, he works toward gaining sympathy for the worker who are forced to pay the price for the students irresponsible but unintentional choices. During this discussion of the problem, Ravisankar writes as if he is assuming that the students are unaware of how much their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For many years Canada has feared the increasing influence of its North American neighbors on its culture the United States . The feature that creates this difference is the fact that they have a different language when compared to the rest of the continent. This generally makes it easier to protect their culture. Unlike the Canadian government, America on the other hand operates communication in a free trade environment just like any other commodity and is deeply committed to deregulation allowing free competition. Along with this, America also tries to pressurize its neighbors to follow the same pattern set by them. They do this because they are not insecure about their culture the way Canada or Quebec is. The American government does not force or intervene and make policies to encourage or promote their culture since they are well aware of the fact that their culture is taking over the continent and slowly seeping in to the media markets all over the world; therefore knowing that their cultural identity is far from danger. Out of the invention of the phonograph, three distinct qualities were discovered of recorded music: portability, affordability, and repeatability. Thanks to the phonograph and its portability, Americans could hear the classics through recordings since professional musicians never ventured to the rural areas. Portability would have meant nothing if not for its affordability. In 1890 the cost of the phonograph was $40, and by the 1900 s it was reduced down to five dollars. Poor blacks could also afford the phonograph, and in their minds it was a way to try and achieve equalities among whites by listening and learning their culture. Repeatability was believed to serve two main functions: to single out the good music versus the bad and to help listeners to appreciate the art of the classics. Due to the fact that recording music had a maximum of three to four minutes, musicians had to drastically cut the time of their music to make more money. The phonograph was later called a gramophone and then it was known as the wax cylinder. The phonograph went out of style when the FM radio was invented and spread throughout American homes. Chris King and her team had put a lot of effort and time into making the Network Technology Unit into what it had become. King and her team had started out by setting very bold targets (a BHAG if you will) of achieving growth levels that were unimaginable at the time and most importantly of becoming a leader in the business of microchip technology. King was result oriented, therefore once the preliminary research was conducted and the team had a clear idea of who to target, they had the green light to aggressively achieve sales any way possible. The driving idea was the audacious goal of becoming the leader in the business, whereas the exact route to how this would be reached wasn t clearly outlined. The first of the line of mistakes was the proposition to the client that with IBM anything was possible. King promised products that hadn t even fully been developed yet and agreed to supplying shipments that the company had no capacity for. This for one created some internal discontent as manufacturing couldn t come to terms with King s requirements. Communication became an internal issue between the departments. Moreover, the clients became accustomed to the unit considering and providing for their every need. The skin is composed of three main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis or subcutaneous layer1,2. Epidermis: The epidermis is the outermost layer of mammalian skin and contains four types of cells: keratinocytes, which make up 90% of the cells found in this layer, Langerhans cells, melanocytes, and Merkel cells. Routes of skin penetration: There are two diffusional routes to penetrate into human skin: the transappendageal and the transepidermal routes. The transappendageal route or so called the skin shunts comprises transport via hair follicles, sweat ducts and sebaceous glands. There is relatively small surface area (approximately less than 0.1% of total surface) for this route and may be of some importance for ionic molecules or large polar compounds. In addition, the relative surface area of the shunts in different areas of the body may be various. For instance, in the scalp, the density and size of hair follicles are much greater than in other location on the skin such as on the back12. The transepidermal pathway is principally responsible for diffusion across the skin. This route can be defined as the pathway where compounds permeate across the stratum corneum by using two different passages: the transcellular and the intercellular13,14. The intercellular pathway is generally regarded as the main route of permeation of most compounds and provides a significant route by enhancing interaction with lipid remains in the corneocytes.
