The Similarities And Differences Of Passive Voice In English
During the acquisition of English, Vietnamese learner have to encounter many difficulties because
of these two languages belong two different groups. One of the most difficult problems is passive
voice. Take these sentences as example : " The rice is cook" and " Cơm chín rồi". We can see that
these two sentences have the same meaning but one in passive form and the other in active form.
Thus, It makes learners confused about using passive form properly when translating because
sometimes an active sentence in Vietnamese can be a passive sentence in English. As a teacher–to–
be of English, a Vietnamese learner, I want to do this paper to help English learner clear about all
the similarities and differences of passive voice in English ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

These are some definitions:
"In grammar, the voice of a verb describes the relationship between the action (or state) that the verb
expresses and the participants identified by its arguments (subject, object, etc.). When the subject is
the agent or doer of the action, the verb is in the active voice. When the subject is the patient, target
of the action, the verb is said to be in the passive voice". ( " Voice" n.d.)
"Voice is a grammatical category of verbs that is related to what thing or person is acting and what
thing or person is being acted upon." (Crystal, 2002)
There are two voices in English : active voice and passive voice. While active is used to focus on the
doer, passive voice is used to emphasize on the reciever or the act rather than the performer. Take
this sentence as a example:
" Her brother was captured by the police."
"Her brother" is the recipient of the action "captured" was emphasized and the performer is " the
police.
As a matter of fact, passive voice is not widely used as active. However, in some cases like
acadamic writing, passive is the chosen over active.

Analysis Of The Article ' Heart Of Darkness ' Essay
1. determiner: Words such as "a/an," "the," "some," and "my" are determiners, which are utilized to
"determine" what nouns mean. "A/an" and "the" can be considered to be the most significant
determiners. "A/an" and "the" also are known as articles. A more comprehensive list of determiners
would include "any," "each," "every," "no," "his," "this/that," "these/those," "his," "her," "its,"
"your," "our," and "their." A concept basic to articles is countability, and they pose difficult
challenges for L2 learners regarding, for example, which nouns are countable or uncountable in
English since countability, while very important, can be difficult to quantify. An example regarding
the use of the article would be the novel Heart of Darkness. Not having an article at the beginning of
this title appears more a matter of style than grammar, and also is a characteristic of headlines, titles,
and names. So while conventionally a countable noun (such as heart) needs a determiner (the, a,
this, or my), not applying this rule could be confusing to an L2 learner expecting an article.
2. perfective: In English, there are two aspects (see next entry for a definition of "aspect")–perfect
(also called perfective) and continuous (also termed progressive). The perfect aspect establishes a
connection between two periods of time while the continuous aspect typically connotes that an
activity still is occurring, is seen from a specific juncture in time, and the verbs employed are those

Major Characters In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini
The cold air breezing by as I run fast against the wind, the sun glaring in my eyes as I look up to
locate my kite. I hear the horde cheer as I sprint in the other direction. I feel the sand and gravel hit
my legs as I try to catch up to my opponents. I catch a quick glance of my kite before it disappeared
in the sun again. Kite running developed into one of Afghanistan's most favored activities played by
peoples of all ages. Annually in the winter, when the students have no school,(appositive) there is a
kite flying competition that accumulates high competition. In the story "The Kite Runner" written
by Khaled Hosseini (preposition) the two main characters, Amir and Hassan participate every year
in the tournament together, but this year Amir goes through mental conflicts that affect his
relationship with Hassan (preposition). Relationships are a major concept in this story and do not
always get noticed by the reader. In the narrative, the author utilizes syntax manipulation to draw
attention towards specific sentences the author wants to emphasize and uses symbolic figures that
incorporates kites, war, and winter to represent conflicts and character development.
Shown in the narrative, many symbols represent the difficulty of Amir and Hassan's friendship and
the two–faced nature of Amir's personality. Multiple occasions occur where Amir would not help
Hassan, his families servant (appositive), or would not grant him the value of friendship that Hassan
was giving Amir. Early

Reverend Hale The Crucible
Reverend Hale Change is inevitable. Many humans fight it while others greet it with open arms and
smiling faces. Most people change because of things that happen around, or to them. Negative or
positive, the actions can dictate whether the individual changes for the worse or for the better.
Reverend Hale in Arthur Miller's The Crucible is the perfect example of this. He changes drastically,
yet gradually, throughout the entire play. Hale progresses from conceited due to his abilities, to
hesitant because of the great negative impact the witch trials are beginning to hold, and finally, he
becomes regretful because of his ignorance and the actions it caused. In the beginning, it's very
obvious that Reverend Hale is a bit conceited (noun clause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In this act, and with much consideration (adverb phase #2), Reverend Hale seems to be less full of
himself, and more hesitant. He talks about how he has a difficult time drawing "a clear opinion of
them that come accused before the court," because he doesn't know the people of their town (adverb
phrase #3) (Miller 1169). This is only one of Hale's problems as the play keeps moving along. Act
three brings more complications and hesitance from Hale. Proctor's wife has now been seized and
taken to court, along with others accused of witchcraft. During these court sessions, Reverend Hale
is beginning (gerund #2) to realize that the court really is unfair (noun clause #1). For example, even
though evidence is given by Giles Corey (adjective clause #2), the judge refuses to accept (infinitive
#2) it and simply asks for more evidence (Miller 1195). Now, Hale is starting to become frustrated.
He's also beginning to realize that he has made some aberrations (noun clause #2). When John
Proctor is sentenced to be hanged for witchcraft, Hale respondes to the prejudice court by declaring ,
"I denounce these proceedings! I quit this court!" (Miller 1213), and proceeds to walk out of the
courthouse. This is only the beginning of Hale's

Examples Of Animal Motif In Night By Elie Wiesel
Night Essay Sacrificing everything in life and even a family can be startling. In the perspective of
life, things can change in a glimpse of a second. In the novel Night, Elie, a young Jew, that
unknowingly leaves for his death march, leaves him devastated. He exhausted every possible idea to
avoid this dreadful situation. In conclusion, life is a sequence of events that can dramatically affect
your life in ways that you could never have imagined. Knowing your family could vanish overnight
is a nightmare that many families had to face. In the story Night, Elie uses variations and contrasts
between eye motif and animal motif in the camp. The story Night, tells people all the consequences
and hardships endured during these tragic days of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Seeing someone else suffer as much as you have allows you to see into their soul and share the
compassion. "The look in his eyes as they stared into mine, has never left mine" (Wiesel 119) Going
to a concentration camp can truly be challenging. Within the poor man he was telling Elie
information about being down in the dirt traveled on many times because people didn't look at him
with respect and courtesy. (Prepositional phrase) Of course, the people didn't listen. Due to the stress
and miserable images people in the camps, could only imagine what was next. (Infinitive) "He
closed his eyes as though to escape time" (Wiesel 17). This example can show the bags under their
eyes bringing them down to their feet, in time to escape for peace, once and for all! Eye motif can
show people how intense the camp was taken seriously in the book Night. Elie uses sturdy examples
with eye motif of sorrow expressing the scarcity shown in their eyes. Finally, seeing all of the
backwash of this novel can show you how innocent people are brutally

John Updike's Poem Ex-Basketball Player
Ex–Basketball Player Most everyone has had an extraordinary dream; for some, it is to be a movie
star or to be on a professional sports team. Nevertheless, while great goals they are, they are not
likely. For example, about 1 in 70,000 people become a major movie star (study.com). Entering the
NBA from high school (Gerund) has a likelihood of 3 in 100,000 (ehow.com). Therefore, the great
majority are obligated to find something else to pursue. As a result of people's dreams being so out
of reach, it is difficult for them to succeed with their goals (infinitive). Because this scenario is so
common, it is often the central conflict in movies or literature. For example, this problem occurs for
the persona Flick Webb in John Updike's poem "Ex–Basketball Player". Consequently, Flick, the
main character in the poem (Appositive), is one from the great majority that did not make it in
pursuing basketball. In high school, Flick was an extraordinary basketball player. In fact, he was so
good that he set high school records for points scored. Now after he is out of high school
(Preposition), Flick has nothing. Relying on basketball in high school, (Participle) he never learned
a trade in the real world to use.. He sits in the same town, but now he is ignored, as a gas station
employee. As John Updike characterizes Flick, in the story of his high school fame (Preposition)to

'Color Of Fire-Singed Bread'
I chose this sentence due to the vast number of phrases plus the vivid diction the author uses to
create the aging ambassador in the reader's mind.Vivid diction from this sentence include the "fine
fan", "color of fire–singed bread", and the veins that "writhe and bulge like eels". Imagery such as
the eels that I picture squirming and discolored, even though disgusting, it still creates that image on
the ambassadors thigh. Also, the "fire–singed bread" being used as a color also creates that blend of
colors describing his age spots lucidly. The mood of this sentence seems skeptical. In the earlier
sentence the narrator states how she has never noticed the age of the ambassador but today things
were different and she was not sure what she

Edna Pontellier's Relationship With Water In The Awakening
Kate Chopin's novel, the Awakening, explores many feminist ideologies. The protagonist, Edna
Pontellier, experiences a gradual yet full–fledged "awakening." There are many events throughout
the story that portray this progression of self–awareness; most of these events revolve around Edna's
relationship with water, especially of her stay at Grand Isle. Chopin captures Edna's relationship
with water through its symbolism of both rebirth and death and the repeated string of gerunds at the
beginning and end of the novel. The setting of the resort at Grand Isle and the coastal city of New
Orleans emphasizes the importance of water to Edna's desire for freedom. Chopin alludes to the
"chaotic" and "exceedingly disturbing" nature of the

Monica Ferrell a renowned poet and novelist has written works such as, Of the Irresoubleness of

employ grammatical issues throughout them. She uses attributive adjectives, non–finite verb strings,
active voice and the known–new contract to give an in–depth analysis of her poems which she uses
pathos to convey her emotions. By incorporating these grammatical issues into her work, Ferrell
intends to develop a clear and sharp image to ignite the imagination of her readers. In this semester

analyze how they contribute to the overall tone and effectiveness of the poem. Ferrell was born in
New Delhi. She earned her BA from Harvard University and MFA from Columbia University
(Poetry Foundation). She discusses the role of uncertainty in her poems as she states, "I'm trying to
let something that wants to come into being do so–poetry as uncovering, rather than invention or
rhetoric, and a form of devotion and service."(Poetry Foundation) By using several grammar
techniques Ferrell paints a bright image for her readers to ponder upon. She is an atypical poet
whose work consists of strong, lyrical diction that she uses to convey the imagery through her
earnest tone. Ferrell's work, Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds, Harmless as Recalled by a Fairy

Non–finite verb strings do not have tense, they can create an independent clause (pg.39). Their
forms do not indicate person, number or tense. Non–finite verbs can be found in forms such as
participles, infinitives and gerunds. Participles are Gerunds are–ing verb forms which can fill
nominal slots and they are not considered to be nouns (pg.94). In one example of her poem,
Harmless, as Recalled by a Fairy Tale, she describes "After our rendezvous–this the last word he
said, Waving to me as the train pulled away from the station" (1–2), the word waving is a non–finite
verb, in fact it is also a gerund. One of the ways to distinguish it as a gerund is because there is an–
ing attached to the end of the word. In another example she asserts, "Made my people short of
breath, I heard them wheezing (13), the non–finite verb in this sentence is the word wheezing. The
word wheezing is a present participle which you can tell by the–ing attached at the end of the word.
In addition, to this example is, "Of his departed face like a treasure map, over his words hanging in
the air like the scrolls of Alexandria, had I not been consensual, like a free agent," (16–17), the non–
finite verbs present here in this sentence are departed and hanging. The word departed is a non–
finite verb since it is a past participle because there is an–ed added at the end and this word can also

1.1 Background of The Study
For every human, language is one important things to communicate to each other. Because language
is one media to make one relationship and know the other people by the communication.
There are many language in the world. One of that is English as international language. English is
the one of international language because of almost the people in the world know English as a
second language after their mother language.

e) The object of reflexive (with intransitive)
She is in the habit of oversleeping herself = habit alone slept late (slept too long)
2.2.3 Gerunds with genitive (Possession)
Noun or pronoun, provided that indicates a person or animal, must be in the genitive case (genitive
case), when the noun or pronoun is placed in front of the gerund.
He was displeased at the ice cream vendor 's not coming
I am pleased at your coming .
For example:
a) using gerund is preceded by a noun or pronoun that follows genitive this sometimes happens:
This was a creative work of my doing = This is the creative work I 'm doing. my – genitive pronoun
doing – gerund
That building was of an architect 's designing = The building was designed by the architect. architect
's – genitive noun designing – gerund
b) Sometimes the letter "a" is placed in front of the gerund in the sense of the preposition. Here "a"
is an alteration or abbreviation of the preposition on:
The man has gone a hunting .
He has gone a–fishing .
2.2.4 Who Owns the–ing form
Besides gerund, present participle is still there and the original noun, we must distinguish clearly.
For example:
a) A sleeping–carriage (= a carriage used for sleeping) = train / wagon (to) sleep.
Sleeping is a gerund here.
b) A sleeping child (= a Child That Is sleeping) = a sleeping child.
Here sleepingmerupakan present participle used as an adjective.

Examples Of Split Infinitives
Of the three verb classes, infinitives might be the easiest to understand, as "it is the basic form of the
verb, without an infection binding it to a particular subject or tense (Oxford Dictionaries). Speakers
only need the basic understanding of a verb's meaning to simply use its infinitive form. As the
speaker's language develops, one begins to understand gerund and participle phrases later,
eventually even learning how to modify those sentences with modal verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
However, when one attempts to modify infinitive phrases, many professors to be incorrect, as a
"mark of informality". Typically, when one modifies an infinitive phrase adjuncts are added between
"to" and the verb, like in the case of "to casually walk" or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Additionally, with Byron's use of the split infinitive, the line mimics the excitement of conversation
rather than the seriousness of prose, allowing the reader to feel a larger emotional response. Anne
Curzan states that one of the largest myths about standard English is that it always makes sense. She
uses split infinitives as an example for this myth, as there is no clear explanation for where the rule
came from. However, despite some speakers proclamations against split infinitives, Curzan (and
Pullum in his previously mentioned article) state that split infinitives clear more ambiguity than they
add to a sentence. Examine the sentence: "Tell her to please be careful". If a writer rewrites the
sentences to unsplit the infinitive, it changes what exactly "please" modifies. For example, "Please
tell her to be careful", "please" now references the listener rather than the "her" in question. If
"please" is moved to follow "careful", like "Tell her to be careful please" it becomes ambiguous if
the speaker is asking the listener "please" or still referring to the other person. Keeping the infinitive
split helps the listener understand that the speaker wishes the person being referenced to be please

Dedication This book is dedicated to all student teachers and for those becoming student teachers
who believe that there are better and more effective ways of teaching and teaching is more fun and
challenging. Philosophy of education My philosophy of education can refer to either the academic
field of applied Philiosopher to one of any educational philosophies that promote a specific type or
vision of education, and which examine the definition, goals and meaning of education. As a student
teacher of this institution, I believe from the other philosophers who really helped me o lot on how
to be more effective teacher someday. I can be more effective if I am following some of the theories
of the Philosophers. The philosophy of education may be either the philosophy of the process of
education or the philosophy of the discipline of education. That is, it may be part of the discipline in
the sense of being concerned with the aims, forms, methods, or results of the process of educating or
being educated; or it may be multidisciplinary in the sense of being concerned with the concepts,
aims, and methods of the discipline. The multiple ways of conceiving education coupled with the
multiple fields and approaches of philosophy make philosophy of education not only a very diverse
field but also one that is not easily defined. Although there is overlap, philosophy of education
should not be conflated with educational theory, which is not defined specifically by the application

How to Teach Reported Speech
1.6.–How to Teach Reported Speech – Review – Practice & Lesson plan
Teaching students reported or indirect speech can be complicated by the all the changes that are
required when moving from direct speech into reported speech. First off, students should understand
that reported speech is quite useful in conversational English as relating what someone has said
using "quote" and "unquote" is awkward at best. A further aspect of reported speech is encouraging
students to use other reporting verbs beyond "say" and "tell".
Introducing Reported Speech
Start with Tenses
I find it best to start off with simple examples in which changes are only made in tense. For
example:
Write on the Board:
Direct Speech
Tom said, "I enjoy watching action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both Jack and I commented that Peter was a lucky person indeed.
Exercise 2: Ask you partner the following questions making sure to take good notes. After you have
finished the questions, find a new partner and report what you have learnt about your first partner
using reported speech.
What is your favorite sport and how long have you been playing/doing it?
What are your plans for your next vacation?
How long have you known your best friend? Can you give me a description of him/her?
What kind of music do you like? Have you always listened to that kind of music?
What did you use to do when you were younger that you don 't do anymore?
Do you have any predictions about the future?
Can you tell me what you do on a typical Saturday afternoon?
What were you doing yesterday at this time?
Which two promises will you make concerning learning English?
As students become familiar with the reported speech, introduce a wider range of reporting verbs to
help students move past "say" and "tell".
There are a number of other reporting verbs which can more accurately describe what someone has
said. These verbs take a variety of structures. The following list gives you reporting verbs in various
categories based on sentence structure. Notice that a number of verbs can take more than one form.

John Updike's Poem Ex-Basketball Player
Ex–Basketball Player Most everyone has had an extraordinary dream; for some, it is to be a movie
star or to be on a professional sports team. Nevertheless, while great goals they are, they are not
likely. For example, about 1 and 70,000 people become a major movie star (study.com).
Additionally, the likelihood of entering the NBA from high school is 3 and 100,000 (ehow.com).
Therefore, the great majority are obligated to find something else to pursue. As a result of people's
dreams being so out of reach, it is difficult for them to succeed with their goals (infinitive). Because
this scenario is so common, it is often the central conflict in movies or literature. For example, this
problem occurs for the persona Flick Webb ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their rubber elbows hanging loose and low" (Updike 7–9). The speaker gives the gas pumps human
qualities to contrast Flick's current lifestyle surroundings (Infinitive), with his desire to relive his
past lively basketball games. At work, he pretends to be back on the court with his teammates. In
this scene, Flick's loneliness after high school creates a melancholy tone because Updike personifies
inanimate objects. In addition, he tells about Flick back in his glory days. For instance, the speaker
highlights how excellent Flick was at basketball when he was in high school by saying how "The
ball loved Flick" (Updike 16). He explains the time back in highschool when everyone cared about
him, then contrasted it to his now boring life. Furthermore, Flick goes from being adored and loved
by everyone to abandoned by everyone (Infinitive). A consistent use of personification is noted in
the poem. Updike, the author of the poem, (Appositive) tells the reader the sad days of Flick after
high school, compared to his extraordinary high school basketball days. When he is grown with the
same skills, no one notices him; for example he when working and Updike describes Flick's hands
by saying, "His hands are fine and nervous on the lug wrench. It makes no difference to the lug
wrench, though" (Updike 23–24). The use of personification shows how he went from being loved
with his skills, to unnoticed in life. Flick was surrounded by

Disadvantages Of Infinitive Clauses
Section Three
3.1 Non–finite clauses
(Quirk, Greenbaum, Geoffrey, & Svartik, 1985), say that non–finite clauses are regularly dependent.
They are more compact and less explicit than finite clauses. They are not marked for tense and
modality, and they frequently lack an explicit subject and subordinator. (17): I don't know what to
write about.
3.1.1 Types of non–finite clauses
1– Bare infinitive
Bare infinitive is the base form of the verb without to, this form of nonfinite clause has no tense. The
bare infinitive in general is very limited because it mostly occurs after verbs of causation, perception
and modal auxiliary. (18): I saw Jim leave. (See is a verb of perception) (19): I can tell the truth.
(Telling the truth is what occurs after modal auxiliary.
Bare infinitive in this case, functions as the complement of a verb, that is , it adds more information
to make the main verb understandable. (Biber, Johansson, Leech, Conrad, & Finegan, 1999).
2– Infinitive clauses
Uninflected infinitive forms which comprise simply the base or stem of the verb with no added
inflection (such forms are frequently used after the so–called infinitive particle to) Infinitive clauses
can have a range of syntactic roles a– subject (20): The best thing would be for you to tell
everybody. b– without subject (21): The best thing would be to tell everybody. c– Direct object (22):
He upset you very much, and I hate to see that. (Quirk, Greenbaum, Geoffrey, & Svartik, 1985)

Norman Rockwell And The American Academy Of Design
Norman Rockwell was born in 1894 and Died 1978. At the young age of 14, he enrolled in art
school in New York City. Two Years later he left High school to study at the National Academy of
design. Before studying Norman Rockwell for this paper I honestly had no kind of knowledge about
him or any of his work, At least I didn't think I did. Looking at some of the work that he has done, I
noticed I few pieces that I have seen before. One thing that you would notice about all of his
paintings. Norman Rockwell is able to paint a vivid picture of whatever you can think of but the
way he is able to capture certain situation is uncanny. He is able to capture an image that may have
two or three different interpretations of the same photos. (Relative Clause) He is a mastermind at
using different works of arts and tying them in together somehow. For intense, the three photos that I
decided to use are all contains four boys playing three different sports. In all the sports the four boys
are showing three different emotions. Four sporting boys Basketball will be the first photo. Four
boys sporting baseball and the final one American Masters. Four Sporting boys show four young
men engaged in a game of basketball like boys their age would be. As you look into the photo you
see something different. The boys are in a raging argument about something. (Participle phrase)

Morfette
Morfette, the morphological analyzer and lemmatizer we included in our annotation pipeline,
reaches an accuracy of 98.38% for morphological features and of 97.21% for lemmas on the test set
(cfr. Table 13). However, in Morfette a concatenation of features is treated as a single string and not
in an atomic way. We computed accuracy for single feature on the test set and we report the results
in Table 23. It is possible that features with a low accuracy have a negative impact during pars– ing.
We compared the results of Table 23 to the results of our experiment on morphological features for
parsing (Table 17). PronType, NumType, Poss, Reflex are the features that were deemed useless for
parsing; however, they present a high prediction accuracy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Along with Gender, they form the paradigm of agreement features. However, Person and Number
are beneficial during parsing where Gender is not. In fact, when Gender was added, the accuracy
dropped of 0.3% points. If it is true that the most helpful features are those concerned with verbs,
this could explain why Gender is not beneficial. In fact, only a subsets of Italian verbs differ– entiate
for gender; most of them differentiate only for mood, verb form, number and person. We conclude
that between agreement features, only Person and Number are useful for parsing Italian, while
Gender is actually harmful. Previous works within the MaltParser framework on other MRLs have
showed similar results (see for example Ambati et al. [2010] for

Squeaky Character Analysis
Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker, also known as Squeaky, exemplifies determination to succeed
through hardships, exhibits great confidence in her running talent, and she illustrates her impulse to
protect Raymond. Squeaky displays determination, for she practices anytime anywhere. Squeaky's
mother expresses embarrassment, for Squeaky high prances down 34th Street, showing that she
doesn't care about other people's judgements, and does whatever requires her to achieve excellence.
Squeaky also runs in the morning, and whenever she takes a stroll, she practices her breathing

running ability. Squeaky exhibits how she projects great confidence in her running abilities.
Squeaky states "'If things get too rough I run, and that anybody can tell you I'm the fastest thing on
two feet,"'(1) which illustrates that she knows of her ability to outrun almost anybody. In fact, she
embodies the fastest thing in the neighborhood, so the big kids call her Mercury.(#18 begin with a

English Verb Forms Of English Grammar
According to ELT and Greebaum's The Oxford English Grammar (1996) English verb forms can be
systematized under two huge categories, each of them includes sub–categories of forms.
1.Inflected forms:
1.1. Base Form of verbs: In English grammar a regular English verb has only on principal part, from
which all following verb forms can be derived. This form is available in dictionary and is called
base form. For example, base form is paint, the inflected forms are: paint, paints, painted, painting.
Hence we can notice, that the base may be called the bare infinitive and the another common way to
referring to verbs is combination with –to + infinitive, for example, to paint (Greenbaum, S., 1996,
Pp.118–121)
1.2. Irregular verbs have three principal parts (because the simple past and past participle are
unpredictable). For instance, the verb write with the base form write, past form – wrote, and past
participle – written, the remaining forms (writes and writing) are derived regularly (Greenbaum, S.,
1996, Pp.126–128)
1.3. Also there are such verbs as do, say and have that additionally have irregular third person
singular present tense forms.
1.4. That is, the copular verb be is irregular (forms: be, am, is, are, was, were, been and being),
1.5. On the opposition modal verbs (can and must) are defective verbs and are being used only in
limited number of forms (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.125–129).
Another important part of verb form analysis is grammatical base form or plain form

Analysis Of Peter Walsh's Mrs. Dalloway
Peter Walsh is a temporarily homeless character inhabiting the pages of Virginia Woolf's Mrs.
Dalloway. Away from his adopted home of India, he finds lodgment in memories of the past (his
own and other's), Clarissa Dalloway's party and living room, Regents Park, a hotel room and a
restaurant – along with the streets he traverses. While the Dalloways and the Smiths arrive at home,
Walsh is in a state of motion or potential motion throughout the text. After he arrives at the decision
to attend Clarissa's party, Walsh thinks, "For this is the truth about our soul...our self, who, fish–like,
inhabits deep seas and plies among obscurities...has a positive need to brush, scrape, kindle herself,
gossiping" (161). The steady and perpetual movement of "fish–like" and the soul's "[plying] among
obscurities" is descriptive of Peter Walsh's path through the text. Walsh understands that the soul
must seek connection – the "positive need to brush, scrape, kindle herself, gossiping." These verbs
share a social, relational quality – which creates a friction only possible between objects. The
movement of the verbs gains strength and impact – from a "brush" to the intimate engagement that
"gossiping" connotes. Movement from the three verbs (all what one does to another) to the gerund
of "gossiping" (what one experiences with others) evidences the soul's insistence on intimacy.
Within Walsh's hotel room – a pseudo–home, self–consciously both home and not home – the
tension between the impersonal

Verb and Gerund
Introduction My course paper is called the gerund. I have chosen this subject, because I want to
know more about the gerund. There are several reasons for it: 1)1 want know more about the
gerund, because it will help me in my future studying, will help me not to produce errors ; 2) Since
most languages ( e.g.: Spanish, Russian, French) have infinitives, but no gerunds; 3) This will help
me to increase my outlook.
I think the use of the gerunds in English is problem, because use infinitive is easier, and How I
wrote above the gerund is no in the Russian language. This is one of the reasons why students do
mistakes.
The gerund is rendered in Russian in different ways: a) The gerund executes the functions of a

The English verbs include four forms distinctly differing one another within the general verb
system: the infinitive, the present participle, the past participle and the gerund. As natural results of
its origin and development the gerund has nominal and verbal properties. The nominal characteristic
of the gerund are followed: The gerund can be perform the functions of subject, predicative, object,
adverbial modifier, and attribute. I will describe all of them. The Gerund is the non–finite form of
the verb which combines the properties of the verb with those of the noun. The gerund serves as the
verbal name of a process, but its substantive quality is more strongly pronounced than that of the
infinitive. Namely, as different from the infinitive, and
similar to the noun, the gerund can be modified by a noun in the possessive case or its pronominal
equivalents (expressing the subject of the verbal process), and it can be used with prepositions.
Since the gerund is an abstract name of the process denoted by the verbal lexeme, a question might
arise, why the infinitive, and not the gerund is taken as the head–form of the verbal lexeme as a

Jason Bivins Jazz And Religion Summary
In his eye–opening book, Jason Bivins analyzes the connection that jazz music has with American
religion. Not many scholars have decided to address this area religious studies.
He conducts interviews with multiple musicians, in an effort to grasp what level of impact that their
religion or spirituality had on their work.
He pushes for the need of religious experience to understanding jazz, while, at the same time,
attempts to show that jazz can serve as a catalyst for fresh interpretations to American religion.
Scholars of religion have begun to place a greater emphasis on the senses, particularly vision and
hearing
He lays out his case in eight chapters, which equally divide the book's main content into two parts.

Eventually, he begins to pivot to the influence of the other faiths. For example, Islam gave black
jazz artists another way to find their "subjectivity." Much of the Islamic jazz artists can be attributed
to the Ahmadiyya movement. Their groups gave black jazz artists a feeling of dignity and respect.
In chapter 3, he focuses on how jazz is able to create narratives for American religion. He said that
the retellings of jazz "employ strategies of evasion designed to counter attempts to control and
commodify 'jazz' and 'religion' alike..." (Bivins, pg. 84).
In chapter four, he focuses on jazz communitarianism. Even in the participation of counter–
institutions, there is an American desire to find freedom and resist the norms. There were numerous
organizations such as the Union of God's Musicians in Artists Ascension (UGMAA) and the
Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) who were able to foster growth in
young musicians and give them tools to better succeed in life. These functions were very similar to
the functions of a church or religious

The Importance Of Learning A Second Language
necessary for everything, choosing to learn a second language it is important for different ways,
most of them can be introduce from some people, it is a long process and it takes dedication, in this
essay there is an analysis of all the problems and steps of a student who is learning English, it is
made for searching the origins of the decision, at the end it is going to be a teaching plan to reduce
those problems and strength the language.
The background of a student is necessary for working with him or her. In this case, it is an analysis
from a student, for example she was born in México, her first language is Spanish, she is learning
English, no one in her family speaks another language, she has 3 brothers, she is studying English
for her degree in college, reading books, travel, jobs interviews, and professional interviews, she
would like to learn another language such as German or French.
Now, speaking about what motivated the student, there are two types of motivation intrinsic and
extrinsic.
Intrinsic motivations sterm from previous attitudes of the learner before attending a given learning
experience (ITTO,2016, PP 52) for example love for the second language, desire for understanding
music, books, interest in culture, politics, travel.
Extrinsic motivations can be motivations who had influence from an external incentive (ITTO,2016,
PP52) for example their parents force the students, promotionals, peer pressure.

Reaction Paper On Preposition
Preposition is a part of a sentence. Without a preposition, a sentence may not carry any meaning
even. A sentence may fail to give its complete meaning without a preposition. It is the most
commonly used functional word in sentences. A preposition is placed anywhere in a sentence.
According to the rules of forming a sentence, a sentence does not end with preposition. The usage of
preposition at the end of sentence is not grammatically correct, still, it is used. It is permissible in
the modern times. A preposition that comes at the end of sentence is called stranded preposition. No
concrete and clear definition can be given for each preposition except for a few. Most of the time,
the meaning of prepositions can only be inferred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Placed over)
Preposition may be of a word or phrase,
e.g. (of words) at, in, on, etc.
e.g. (of phrases)
'In spite of', 'on account of,' 'instead of,' etc. At times a preposition functions as a modifier. (I.e. as an
adjective or as an adverb)
e.g.
We arrived at 12'0 clock. (Adverb)
The news about him is not true. (Adjective)
The word preposition has its origin from a Latin word "praepositia" meaning placed before that is
pre–positioned. It is placed before a noun, a pronoun, or a phrase. It shows or explains its temporal
or logical relationship of an object (a noun, a pronoun, or a phrase)
with some other noun or pronoun or adjective or phrase in sentences. Preposition tells or gives the
information or idea on the relationship between nouns or pronouns or something else. It tells, in
what relation a noun or a pronoun stands in regard to something else in a sentence.
The cat is under the table.
Here the preposition 'under' is placed before the noun table and explains in what way the noun 'cat'
stands in relation to the other noun 'table,' in other words, the preposition 'under,' explains in what
way the two nouns 'cat' and 'table' is related to each other:

Analysis Of The Article ' Heart Of Darkness ' Essay
determiner: Words such as "a/an," "the," "some," and "my" are determiners, which are utilized to
"determine" what nouns mean.
Not having an article at the beginning of
this title appears to be more a matter of style than grammar, and also is a characteristic of headlines,
titles, and names. So while conventionally a countable noun (such as heart) needs a determiner (the,
a, this, or my), not applying this rule could be confusing to an L2 learner expecting an article.
2. perfective: In English, there are two aspects (see next entry for a definition of "aspect")–perfect
(also called perfective) and continuous (also termed progressive). The perfect aspect establishes a
connection between two periods of time while the continuous aspect typically connotes that an
activity still is occurring, is seen from a specific juncture in time, and the verbs employed are those

Analyzing Ron Rindo's 'Learning To Drive'
"Learning to Drive" Lit Analysis Garden of Grief Every flower starts as a bud. Claiming its territory

until the once seemingly worthless seedling morphs into a delicate, divine work of art. The bud, now
a full grown flower, spread its own seed, distributing new clusters throughout lush–green meadows.
However, the flower may wither and as a result lose its previous allure. Cancer, similar to a flower,

emphasizing the impact this disease has on an individual and his family. The protagonist, an

the amputation (participial phrase), he receives a prosthetic leg and returns home to be greeted with
gifts and a celebration. Despite an attempt to return to normalcy and his daily routine (prepositional

People say someone's children are a reflection of their parents. Atticus taught and raised both of his
kids with Calpurnia (Atticus' loyal housekeeper), which shows that he would be an open minded and
a laudable educator. I remember the night when Atticus believed that his son, Jem, had killed Bob
Ewell. He believed that his son had killed Mr. Ewell and needed to be punished just like everyone
else, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart, but I don't want my boy starting out with something
like this over his head... I don't want him growing up with a whisper about him, I don't want
anybody saying, 'Jem Finch... his daddy paid a mint to get him out of that" (366). This characteristic
of honesty and fatherly image proves to be a qualification for a teacher who would impact and
challenge students in school. When he was thinking about what he was going to do with Jem's
situation, he knew that he should not let the fact that it was his son get in the way of the fact that he
should be just like everyone else. Atticus a good role model for younger children, but is also a good

blacks, and the respect he receives from his peers, kids, and the town

Assignment : Focus On The Learner
Written Assignment – Focus on the Learner Profile of the learner Introduction Nazir has kindly
volunteered for this piece of work. He is a native of Syria who was born in the capital Damascus.
His mother tongue is Arabic and he is studying English at South Thames College on the Upper
Intermediate level. He currently performs in the top half of the class according to his own
assessment with which I tend to concur. Nazir first learnt English for a few hours a week during
high school. As an adult he took a six month course in the USA with an emphasis on aviation
English in preparation for his pilot training course. Having completed it successfully, he worked a
number of years for Syrian Airlines. The learner I am focusing on is highly motivated by his desire
to integrate better into British society and by wanting to increase his job prospects. His preferred
learning styles are reading and writing. Consequently, during the lessons he enjoys working on his
own and in pairs. Nazir regularly talks Arabic with his wife and teenage children at home. He would
benefit from using the English language regularly in his interactions with them. In addition, he
needs to engage more with native English–speaking people. Since his hobbies are swimming and
playing chess, this could be achieved through a membership in a swimming or chess club. The
socialising aspect in these gatherings would provide him with opportunities to develop fluency in
English. Strength and weaknesses Having

Child of the Americas' by Aurora Levins Morales and 'What...
"Child of the Americas" by Aurora Levins Morales and "What It's Like To Be A Black Girl (For
Those Of You Who Aren't)" by Patricia Smith are poems that share a common theme. That theme is
identity in particular, racial and cultural identity. But the poetic means that each author employs to
express her theme could not be more different. An examination of the rhetorical stances employed
by each poet will show that Morales and Smith could not be more different in their expression of
political and social identity in verse. A simplification would be to say that Morales states her identity
positively and Smith states it negatively, but this is of course a simplification. The truth lies in the
poetic strategy: to take an opposition that is well–established in American poetry, Morales is
Whitmanic and Smith is Dickinsonian. A closer examination of their poems will demonstrate that
Morales is attempting an expansive and exuberant form of self–expression, while Smith attains her
self–expression through constraint, hermetic images, and stylistic compression. "Child of the
Americas" by Aurora Levins Morales dates from 1986, when Ronald Reagan was president. The
title could be viewed as ironic: Morales is clearly not a child. But "Child" in the title is
metaphorical, referring to metaphorical parentage: the "Americas" are presumably North and South
America, as we discover later in the poem. The poem itself is structured around the basic poetic
device of anaphora, or rhythmic

Preposition includes to kinds of 'function words' which means "a word that doesn't belong to one of
the four major parts of speech in English (noun, verb, adjective, adverb). "Their purpose is not only
to express meaning but to relate other words to each other" (Hornby, 1975:7).
Prepositions are words normally placed before nouns or pronouns and can also be followed by verbs
but, except after but and except, the verb must be in the gerund form (Thomson, 1986: 91)
A preposition is a words that links a noun or a noun equivalent (e.g. a pronoun or a gerund) to
another word by expressing such relationships as location, direction, time, or purpose.
(Longman,...............).
Preposition are always followed by nouns (or pronouns). They are connective words that show the
relationship between the nouns following them and one of the basic sentence elements: subject,
verb, object, or complement. They usually indicate relationship such as position, place, direction,
time manner, agent, possession, and condition, between their objects and other parts of the sentence.
Prepositional phrases usually provide international asked for by the question words who, what,
where, when, why, how, and how long. The noun or pronoun following the preposition is it's object.
A pronoun used in this position is always an object pronoun: me, you, him, her, it, us, and them. The
preposition plus its object is called the preposition phrase. (Wishon,1980.288–289)

The War on Conflict Diamonds Essay
"Diamonds are forever" it is often said. "But lives are not", says Martin Chungong Ayafor, Chairman
of the Sierra Leone Panel of Experts, "We must spare people the ordeal of war, mutilations and
death for the sake of conflict diamonds." (United Nations 2). This is a very powerful quote from
someone who has and is experiencing (Gerund) firsthand the gruesome terror of the conflict over
diamonds in Africa. This war has started because of the greed for money and power in the abundant
diamond industry in the different parts of Africa by the R.U.F. In Sierra Leone alone, about 20,000
innocent people have suffered bodily mutilation, 75,000 people have been killed, and around
2,000,000 people have fled Sierra Leone because of the genocide, or ... Show more content on

(United Nations 1). Early in 1992, the R.U.F seized Kono, the diamond mining capital of Sierra
Leone, because of the amount of profit in the diamond mining industry in Africa, and initiated a
diamond conflict between some diamond mining nations in Africa, thus starting (Gerund) the "War
over Conflict Diamonds". In an attempt to put (Infinitive) a halt to this uprising, the National
Provisional Ruling Council (N.P.R.C) waged war with the R.U.F., creating "Operation Genesis" to
force out the R.U.F. (Brown 1). However, this did not succeed, causing an attack by the R.U.F. on
Sierra Leoneans. To intimidate voters and keep control on the diamond mines, the R.U.F "chopped
off the hands and feet of adults, teens, and infants." (Brown 1). Despite this vicious onslaught, the
R.U.F. was still allowed to participate (Infinitive) in the elections. (Brown 1). This remains the
biggest reason that we must put an end to these rebel groups and the pain they cause to African
families.
The impact on Africa that the war over conflict diamonds has caused has affected Africa both
positively and negatively. By July of 1999, the violence had greatly risen, which had caused the
government of Sierra Leone to sign a peace agreement with the R.U.F. that "legitimized the R.U.F.
and brought it into the government with several cabinet positions." (Brown 2). Sadly, the R.U.F was
only interested in keeping control over the diamond mines in Kono and Tongo. As a

The Similarities And Differences Of Passive Voice In English

  • 1. The Similarities And Differences Of Passive Voice In English During the acquisition of English, Vietnamese learner have to encounter many difficulties because of these two languages belong two different groups. One of the most difficult problems is passive voice. Take these sentences as example : " The rice is cook" and " Cơm chín rồi". We can see that these two sentences have the same meaning but one in passive form and the other in active form. Thus, It makes learners confused about using passive form properly when translating because sometimes an active sentence in Vietnamese can be a passive sentence in English. As a teacher–to– be of English, a Vietnamese learner, I want to do this paper to help English learner clear about all the similarities and differences of passive voice in English ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are some definitions: "In grammar, the voice of a verb describes the relationship between the action (or state) that the verb expresses and the participants identified by its arguments (subject, object, etc.). When the subject is the agent or doer of the action, the verb is in the active voice. When the subject is the patient, target of the action, the verb is said to be in the passive voice". ( " Voice" n.d.) "Voice is a grammatical category of verbs that is related to what thing or person is acting and what thing or person is being acted upon." (Crystal, 2002) There are two voices in English : active voice and passive voice. While active is used to focus on the doer, passive voice is used to emphasize on the reciever or the act rather than the performer. Take this sentence as a example: " Her brother was captured by the police." "Her brother" is the recipient of the action "captured" was emphasized and the performer is " the police. As a matter of fact, passive voice is not widely used as active. However, in some cases like acadamic writing, passive is the chosen over active. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Analysis Of The Article ' Heart Of Darkness ' Essay 1. determiner: Words such as "a/an," "the," "some," and "my" are determiners, which are utilized to "determine" what nouns mean. "A/an" and "the" can be considered to be the most significant determiners. "A/an" and "the" also are known as articles. A more comprehensive list of determiners would include "any," "each," "every," "no," "his," "this/that," "these/those," "his," "her," "its," "your," "our," and "their." A concept basic to articles is countability, and they pose difficult challenges for L2 learners regarding, for example, which nouns are countable or uncountable in English since countability, while very important, can be difficult to quantify. An example regarding the use of the article would be the novel Heart of Darkness. Not having an article at the beginning of this title appears more a matter of style than grammar, and also is a characteristic of headlines, titles, and names. So while conventionally a countable noun (such as heart) needs a determiner (the, a, this, or my), not applying this rule could be confusing to an L2 learner expecting an article. 2. perfective: In English, there are two aspects (see next entry for a definition of "aspect")–perfect (also called perfective) and continuous (also termed progressive). The perfect aspect establishes a connection between two periods of time while the continuous aspect typically connotes that an activity still is occurring, is seen from a specific juncture in time, and the verbs employed are those typically ... I hear the horde cheer as I sprint in the other direction. I feel the sand and gravel hit my legs as I try to catch up to my opponents. I catch a quick glance of my kite before it disappeared in the sun again. Kite running developed into one of Afghanistan's most favored activities played by peoples of all ages. Annually in the winter, when the students have no school,(appositive) there is a kite flying competition that accumulates high competition. In the story "The Kite Runner" written by Khaled Hosseini (preposition) the two main characters, Amir and Hassan participate every year in the tournament together, but this year Amir goes through mental conflicts that affect his relationship with Hassan (preposition). Relationships are a major concept in this story and do not always get noticed by the reader. In the narrative, the author utilizes syntax manipulation to draw attention towards specific sentences the author wants to emphasize and uses symbolic figures that incorporates kites, war, and winter to represent conflicts and character development. Shown in the narrative, many symbols represent the difficulty of Amir and Hassan's friendship and the two–faced nature of Amir's personality. Multiple occasions occur where Amir would not help Hassan, his families servant (appositive), or would not grant him the value of friendship that Hassan was giving Amir. Early ... • 10. Reverend Hale The Crucible Reverend Hale Change is inevitable. Many humans fight it while others greet it with open arms and smiling faces. Most people change because of things that happen around, or to them. Negative or positive, the actions can dictate whether the individual changes for the worse or for the better. Reverend Hale in Arthur Miller's The Crucible is the perfect example of this. He changes drastically, yet gradually, throughout the entire play. Hale progresses from conceited due to his abilities, to hesitant because of the great negative impact the witch trials are beginning to hold, and finally, he becomes regretful because of his ignorance and the actions it caused. In the beginning, it's very obvious that Reverend Hale is a bit conceited (noun clause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this act, and with much consideration (adverb phase #2), Reverend Hale seems to be less full of himself, and more hesitant. He talks about how he has a difficult time drawing "a clear opinion of them that come accused before the court," because he doesn't know the people of their town (adverb phrase #3) (Miller 1169). This is only one of Hale's problems as the play keeps moving along. Act three brings more complications and hesitance from Hale. Proctor's wife has now been seized and taken to court, along with others accused of witchcraft. During these court sessions, Reverend Hale is beginning (gerund #2) to realize that the court really is unfair (noun clause #1). For example, even though evidence is given by Giles Corey (adjective clause #2), the judge refuses to accept (infinitive #2) it and simply asks for more evidence (Miller 1195). Now, Hale is starting to become frustrated. He's also beginning to realize that he has made some aberrations (noun clause #2). When John Proctor is sentenced to be hanged for witchcraft, Hale respondes to the prejudice court by declaring , "I denounce these proceedings! I quit this court!" (Miller 1213), and proceeds to walk out of the courthouse. This is only the beginning of Hale's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He exhausted every possible idea to avoid this dreadful situation. In conclusion, life is a sequence of events that can dramatically affect your life in ways that you could never have imagined. • 14. John Updike's Poem Ex-Basketball Player Ex–Basketball Player Most everyone has had an extraordinary dream; for some, it is to be a movie star or to be on a professional sports team. Nevertheless, while great goals they are, they are not likely. For example, about 1 in 70,000 people become a major movie star (study.com). Entering the NBA from high school (Gerund) has a likelihood of 3 in 100,000 (ehow.com). Therefore, the great majority are obligated to find something else to pursue. As a result of people's dreams being so out of reach, it is difficult for them to succeed with their goals (infinitive). Because this scenario is so common, it is often the central conflict in movies or literature. For example, this problem occurs for the persona Flick Webb in John Updike's poem "Ex–Basketball Player". Consequently, Flick, the main character in the poem (Appositive), is one from the great majority that did not make it in pursuing basketball. In high school, Flick was an extraordinary basketball player. In fact, he was so good that he set high school records for points scored. Now after he is out of high school (Preposition), Flick has nothing. Relying on basketball in high school, (Participle) he never learned a trade in the real world to use.. He sits in the same town, but now he is ignored, as a gas station employee. 'Color Of Fire-Singed Bread' I chose this sentence due to the vast number of phrases plus the vivid diction the author uses to create the aging ambassador in the reader's mind.Vivid diction from this sentence include the "fine fan", "color of fire–singed bread", and the veins that "writhe and bulge like eels". Imagery such as the eels that I picture squirming and discolored, even though disgusting, it still creates that image on the ambassadors thigh. Also, the "fire–singed bread" being used as a color also creates that blend of colors describing his age spots lucidly. The mood of this sentence seems skeptical. There are many events throughout the story that portray this progression of self–awareness; most of these events revolve around Edna's relationship with water, especially of her stay at Grand Isle. Chopin captures Edna's relationship with water through its symbolism of both rebirth and death and the repeated string of gerunds at the beginning and end of the novel. The setting of the resort at Grand Isle and the coastal city of New Orleans emphasizes the importance of water to Edna's desire for freedom. Chopin alludes to the "chaotic" and "exceedingly disturbing" nature of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She discusses the role of uncertainty in her poems as she states, "I'm trying to let something that wants to come into being do so–poetry as uncovering, rather than invention or rhetoric, and a form of devotion and service."(Poetry Foundation) By using several grammar techniques Ferrell paints a bright image for her readers to ponder upon. Examples Of Split Infinitives Of the three verb classes, infinitives might be the easiest to understand, as "it is the basic form of the verb, without an infection binding it to a particular subject or tense (Oxford Dictionaries). Speakers only need the basic understanding of a verb's meaning to simply use its infinitive form. As the speaker's language develops, one begins to understand gerund and participle phrases later, eventually even learning how to modify those sentences with modal verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. However, when one attempts to modify infinitive phrases, many professors to be incorrect, as a "mark of informality". Additionally, with Byron's use of the split infinitive, the line mimics the excitement of conversation rather than the seriousness of prose, allowing the reader to feel a larger emotional response. Anne Curzan states that one of the largest myths about standard English is that it always makes sense. She uses split infinitives as an example for this myth, as there is no clear explanation for where the rule came from. However, despite some speakers proclamations against split infinitives, Curzan (and Pullum in his previously mentioned article) state that split infinitives clear more ambiguity than they add to a sentence. Examine the sentence: "Tell her to please be careful". If a writer rewrites the sentences to unsplit the infinitive, it changes what exactly "please" modifies. For example, "Please tell her to be careful", "please" now references the listener rather than the "her" in question. If "please" is moved to follow "careful", like "Tell her to be careful please" it becomes ambiguous if the speaker is asking the listener "please" or still referring to the other person. Keeping the infinitive split helps the listener understand that the speaker wishes the person being referenced to be please be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How to Teach Reported Speech 1.6.–How to Teach Reported Speech – Review – Practice & Lesson plan Teaching students reported or indirect speech can be complicated by the all the changes that are required when moving from direct speech into reported speech. First off, students should understand that reported speech is quite useful in conversational English as relating what someone has said using "quote" and "unquote" is awkward at best. A further aspect of reported speech is encouraging students to use other reporting verbs beyond "say" and "tell". Introducing Reported Speech Start with Tenses I find it best to start off with simple examples in which changes are only made in tense. Nevertheless, while great goals they are, they are not likely. For example, about 1 and 70,000 people become a major movie star (study.com). Additionally, the likelihood of entering the NBA from high school is 3 and 100,000 (ehow.com). Therefore, the great majority are obligated to find something else to pursue. As a result of people's dreams being so out of reach, it is difficult for them to succeed with their goals (infinitive). The speaker gives the gas pumps human qualities to contrast Flick's current lifestyle surroundings (Infinitive), with his desire to relive his past lively basketball games. At work, he pretends to be back on the court with his teammates. In this scene, Flick's loneliness after high school creates a melancholy tone because Updike personifies inanimate objects. In addition, he tells about Flick back in his glory days. For instance, the speaker highlights how excellent Flick was at basketball when he was in high school by saying how "The ball loved Flick" (Updike 16). He explains the time back in highschool when everyone cared about him, then contrasted it to his now boring life. Furthermore, Flick goes from being adored and loved by everyone to abandoned by everyone (Infinitive). A consistent use of personification is noted in the poem. Updike, the author of the poem, (Appositive) tells the reader the sad days of Flick after high school, compared to his extraordinary high school basketball days. When he is grown with the same skills, no one notices him; for example he when working and Updike describes Flick's hands by saying, "His hands are fine and nervous on the lug wrench. • 50. Disadvantages Of Infinitive Clauses Section Three 3.1 Non–finite clauses (Quirk, Greenbaum, Geoffrey, & Svartik, 1985), say that non–finite clauses are regularly dependent. They are more compact and less explicit than finite clauses. They are not marked for tense and modality, and they frequently lack an explicit subject and subordinator. (17): I don't know what to write about. 3.1.1 Types of non–finite clauses 1– Bare infinitive Bare infinitive is the base form of the verb without to, this form of nonfinite clause has no tense. The bare infinitive in general is very limited because it mostly occurs after verbs of causation, perception and modal auxiliary. (18): I saw Jim leave. (See is a verb of perception) (19): I can tell the truth. (Telling the truth is what occurs after modal auxiliary. Bare infinitive in this case, functions as the complement of a verb, that is , it adds more information to make the main verb understandable. (Biber, Johansson, Leech, Conrad, & Finegan, 1999). 2– Infinitive clauses Uninflected infinitive forms which comprise simply the base or stem of the verb with no added inflection (such forms are frequently used after the so–called infinitive particle to) Infinitive clauses can have a range of syntactic roles a– subject (20): The best thing would be for you to tell everybody. b– without subject (21): The best thing would be to tell everybody. c– Direct object (22): He upset you very much, and I hate to see that. Hence we can notice, that the base may be called the bare infinitive and the another common way to referring to verbs is combination with –to + infinitive, for example, to paint (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.118–121) 1.2. Irregular verbs have three principal parts (because the simple past and past participle are unpredictable). For instance, the verb write with the base form write, past form – wrote, and past participle – written, the remaining forms (writes and writing) are derived regularly (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.126–128) 1.3. Also there are such verbs as do, say and have that additionally have irregular third person singular present tense forms. 1.4. That is, the copular verb be is irregular (forms: be, am, is, are, was, were, been and being), 1.5. On the opposition modal verbs (can and must) are defective verbs and are being used only in limited number of forms (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.125–129). Another important part of verb form analysis is grammatical base form or plain form ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Analysis Of Peter Walsh's Mrs. Dalloway Peter Walsh is a temporarily homeless character inhabiting the pages of Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. Away from his adopted home of India, he finds lodgment in memories of the past (his own and other's), Clarissa Dalloway's party and living room, Regents Park, a hotel room and a restaurant – along with the streets he traverses. While the Dalloways and the Smiths arrive at home, Walsh is in a state of motion or potential motion throughout the text. After he arrives at the decision to attend Clarissa's party, Walsh thinks, "For this is the truth about our soul...our self, who, fish–like, inhabits deep seas and plies among obscurities...has a positive need to brush, scrape, kindle herself, gossiping" (161). The steady and perpetual movement of "fish–like" and the soul's "[plying] among obscurities" is descriptive of Peter Walsh's path through the text. Walsh understands that the soul must seek connection – the "positive need to brush, scrape, kindle herself, gossiping." These verbs share a social, relational quality – which creates a friction only possible between objects. The movement of the verbs gains strength and impact – from a "brush" to the intimate engagement that "gossiping" connotes. Movement from the three verbs (all what one does to another) to the gerund of "gossiping" (what one experiences with others) evidences the soul's insistence on intimacy. Within Walsh's hotel room – a pseudo–home, self–consciously both home and not home – the tension between the impersonal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are several reasons for it: 1)1 want know more about the gerund, because it will help me in my future studying, will help me not to produce errors ; 2) Since most languages ( e.g.: Spanish, Russian, French) have infinitives, but no gerunds; 3) This will help me to increase my outlook. I think the use of the gerunds in English is problem, because use infinitive is easier, and How I wrote above the gerund is no in the Russian language. This is one of the reasons why students do mistakes. The gerund is rendered in Russian in different ways: a) The gerund executes the functions of a subject in the sentences, ... The English verbs include four forms distinctly differing one another within the general verb system: the infinitive, the present participle, the past participle and the gerund. As natural results of its origin and development the gerund has nominal and verbal properties. The nominal characteristic of the gerund are followed: The gerund can be perform the functions of subject, predicative, object, adverbial modifier, and attribute. I will describe all of them. The Gerund is the non–finite form of the verb which combines the properties of the verb with those of the noun. The gerund serves as the verbal name of a process, but its substantive quality is more strongly pronounced than that of the infinitive. Namely, as different from the infinitive, and similar to the noun, the gerund can be modified by a noun in the possessive case or its pronominal equivalents (expressing the subject of the verbal process), and it can be used with prepositions. Since the gerund is an abstract name of the process denoted by the verbal lexeme, a question might arise, why the infinitive, and not the gerund is taken as the head–form of the verbal lexeme as a ... Not many scholars have decided to address this area religious studies. He conducts interviews with multiple musicians, in an effort to grasp what level of impact that their religion or spirituality had on their work. He pushes for the need of religious experience to understanding jazz, while, at the same time, attempts to show that jazz can serve as a catalyst for fresh interpretations to American religion. Scholars of religion have begun to place a greater emphasis on the senses, particularly vision and hearing He lays out his case in eight chapters, which equally divide the book's main content into two parts. He said that the retellings of jazz "employ strategies of evasion designed to counter attempts to control and commodify 'jazz' and 'religion' alike..." (Bivins, pg. 84). In chapter four, he focuses on jazz communitarianism. Even in the participation of counter– institutions, there is an American desire to find freedom and resist the norms. There were numerous organizations such as the Union of God's Musicians in Artists Ascension (UGMAA) and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) who were able to foster growth in young musicians and give them tools to better succeed in life. • 68. Reaction Paper On Preposition Preposition is a part of a sentence. Without a preposition, a sentence may not carry any meaning even. A sentence may fail to give its complete meaning without a preposition. It is the most commonly used functional word in sentences. A preposition is placed anywhere in a sentence. According to the rules of forming a sentence, a sentence does not end with preposition. The usage of preposition at the end of sentence is not grammatically correct, still, it is used. It is permissible in the modern times. A preposition that comes at the end of sentence is called stranded preposition. (Placed over) Preposition may be of a word or phrase, e.g. (of words) at, in, on, etc. e.g. (of phrases) 'In spite of', 'on account of,' 'instead of,' etc. At times a preposition functions as a modifier. (I.e. as an adjective or as an adverb) e.g. We arrived at 12'0 clock. (Adverb) The news about him is not true. (Adjective) The word preposition has its origin from a Latin word "praepositia" meaning placed before that is pre–positioned. It is placed before a noun, a pronoun, or a phrase. It shows or explains its temporal or logical relationship of an object (a noun, a pronoun, or a phrase) with some other noun or pronoun or adjective or phrase in sentences. Preposition tells or gives the information or idea on the relationship between nouns or pronouns or something else. It tells, in what relation a noun or a pronoun stands in regard to something else in a sentence. The cat is under the table. Here the preposition 'under' is placed before the noun table and explains in what way the noun 'cat' stands in relation to the other noun 'table,' in other words, the preposition 'under,' explains in what way the two nouns 'cat' and 'table' is related to each other:

  • 71. Analysis Of The Article ' Heart Of Darkness ' Essay determiner: Words such as "a/an," "the," "some," and "my" are determiners, which are utilized to "determine" what nouns mean. Not having an article at the beginning of this title appears to be more a matter of style than grammar, and also is a characteristic of headlines, titles, and names. Claiming its territory (participial phrase), the bud firmly roots itself into the ground and sprouts. The process continues until the once seemingly worthless seedling morphs into a delicate, divine work of art. The bud, now a full grown flower, spread its own seed, distributing new clusters throughout lush–green meadows. However, the flower may wither and as a result lose its previous allure. Cancer, similar to a flower, blooms inside a person's system and weakens his or her abilities. The short story "Learning to Drive", written by Ron Rindo, illustrates the misfortunes brought upon by cancer, while also emphasizing the impact this disease has on an individual and his family. The protagonist, an unnamed father (appositive), loses his leg as a result of his battle with cancer. Forced to cope with the amputation (participial phrase), he receives a prosthetic leg and returns home to be greeted with gifts and a celebration. Despite an attempt to return to normalcy and his daily routine (prepositional phrase), his fate changes once the cancer returns. This time, however, death is inevitable. He believed that his son had killed Mr. Ewell and needed to be punished just like everyone else, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart, but I don't want my boy starting out with something like this over his head... I don't want him growing up with a whisper about him, I don't want anybody saying, 'Jem Finch... his daddy paid a mint to get him out of that" (366). • 77. Assignment : Focus On The Learner Written Assignment – Focus on the Learner Profile of the learner Introduction Nazir has kindly volunteered for this piece of work. He is a native of Syria who was born in the capital Damascus. His mother tongue is Arabic and he is studying English at South Thames College on the Upper Intermediate level. He currently performs in the top half of the class according to his own assessment with which I tend to concur. Nazir first learnt English for a few hours a week during high school. As an adult he took a six month course in the USA with an emphasis on aviation English in preparation for his pilot training course. Having completed it successfully, he worked a number of years for Syrian Airlines. The learner I am focusing on is highly motivated by his desire to integrate better into British society and by wanting to increase his job prospects. His preferred learning styles are reading and writing. Consequently, during the lessons he enjoys working on his own and in pairs. Nazir regularly talks Arabic with his wife and teenage children at home. He would benefit from using the English language regularly in his interactions with them. In addition, he needs to engage more with native English–speaking people. Since his hobbies are swimming and playing chess, this could be achieved through a membership in a swimming or chess club. The socialising aspect in these gatherings would provide him with opportunities to develop fluency in English. Strength and weaknesses Having ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"Child of the Americas" by Aurora Levins Morales and "What It's Like To Be A Black Girl (For Those Of You Who Aren't)" by Patricia Smith are poems that share a common theme. That theme is identity in particular, racial and cultural identity. But the poetic means that each author employs to express her theme could not be more different. An examination of the rhetorical stances employed by each poet will show that Morales and Smith could not be more different in their expression of political and social identity in verse. A simplification would be to say that Morales states her identity positively and Smith states it negatively, but this is of course a simplification. The truth lies in the poetic strategy: to take an opposition that is well–established in American poetry, Morales is Whitmanic and Smith is Dickinsonian. A closer examination of their poems will demonstrate that Morales is attempting an expansive and exuberant form of self–expression, while Smith attains her self–expression through constraint, hermetic images, and stylistic compression. "Child of the Americas" by Aurora Levins Morales dates from 1986, when Ronald Reagan was president. The title could be viewed as ironic: Morales is clearly not a child. But "Child" in the title is metaphorical, referring to metaphorical parentage: the "Americas" are presumably North and South America, as we discover later in the poem. The poem itself is structured around the basic poetic device of anaphora, or rhythmic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In an attempt to put (Infinitive) a halt to this uprising, the National Provisional Ruling Council (N.P.R.C) waged war with the R.U.F., creating "Operation Genesis" to force out the R.U.F. (Brown 1). The impact on Africa that the war over conflict diamonds has caused has affected Africa both positively and negatively.
