The Woman In Black Comparative Essay
Both Charles Dickens and James Watkins in their novel and film respectively, use setting to convey
their protagonists attitudes towards life and death. Great Expectations (1860 61) and The Woman in
Black (2012) both belong to the gothic genre, as their stories are set in an around dark isolated
Victorian mansions, coupled with dull colours emphasising attitudes of anger, sadness and revenge.
Miss Havisham in Great Expectations has lived a reclusive life since being told her husband to be
would not marry her wanting to make revenge on males. Jennet Humphrey in The Woman in Black
chooses to take revenge out on the parents of the town after her son had died. She does this by making
out that the children of the town committed suicide. This puts emphasis on the gothic genre with both
texts showing the depression and fright of both the women in the texts.
James Watkins 2012 film, The Woman in Black, and Charles Dickens 1860 61 novel, Great
Expectations, both use similarities in settings and motifs that put them in the gothic genre. For
instance, Both The Woman in Black and Great expectations use a female predator who is trapped and

The Woman in Black is set in an old, dull castle. In one scene it shows the main character, Arthur
Kips, falling asleep due to exhaustion, on a desk and that is when Jennet Humphrey is shown being
reflected in mirrors and closing in on Kipps. As Jennet closes in on Kipps that is when he wakes to
find a photo of a family with all their eyes scratched out. This gives the atmosphere the feel of mystery
and suspense in the film. The Woman in Black leaves the viewers overcome with the emotions of
terror, sorrow and

Essay American Airlines Business Analysis
In April 1992, American Airlines launched Value Pricing a radical simplification of the complex
pricing structure that had evolved over more than a decade following deregulation of the U.S.
domestic airline industry. American expected that the new pricing structure would benefit consumers
and restore profitability to both American and the industry as a whole. The critical issue raised is:
Would American s bold initiative work?
issues encountered in exercising price leadership to switch industry practice from a complex structure
of differential prices and promotions to a simplified, everyday low pricing structure.

American Airlines had been the largest airline in the United States for a long time. In 1990 and 1991
due to a recession and the Gulf War, demand for air travel dropped drastically, for this reason, fare
wars started and all the airlines incurred massive losses.
3,4 The Airline industry and the market The airline industry is large, specially in the United States,
mainly due to the Deregulation of the industry. In 1938, the Civil Aeronautics Board was created to
control the growth of the air transportation industry. This board had the authority to control entry, exit,
prices and methods of competition. In the late 1970 this structure was found inefficient and in 1978
deregulation took place. Due to the deregulation of the industry competition intensified, prices
dropped, and the number of people travelling increased. Many new companies emerged and regional
airlines saw deregulation as an opportunity to expand. Due to the rise in competition, by 1986 mergers
started to take place and in 1987 64.8% of the market was controlled by the four largest airlines. The
demand for air travel is determined mainly by price, studies revealed that half of the leisure travellers
and on quarter of business travellers did not have a preference for a particular airline, which means
that prices determined the

Deb Fischer Case Study
Introduction Browsing down a Facebook page, I see pictures and statuses of Husker football,
University of Nebraska Omaha Hockey, Nebraska s State Fair, supporting veterans, agriculture, and
plenty of help that is provided for those who want or need it. This is a true Nebraskan s Facebook
page. There is 1.882 million people in Nebraska, so it could possibly be any one (Nebraska). Looking
closely at the posts, I see statuses about what is going on in Washington D.C., and pictures of a
woman Senator traveling around places and talking with constituents. This lady looks so familiar and I
realize I should know who it is, so I scroll to the top and see that it is Deb Fischer s official Facebook
page. (Deb Fischer, Facebook) From above, you can tell that I chose to follow is Deb Fischer. There
were many reasons why I chose to follow Deb Fischer. A few of those were that she cared strongly
about health care, is a female, and owns her own ranching business. My life is mainly composed of

A recent example of something that Fischer has publicized about is Russia s role in Syria. The United
States involvement in the Middle East is not something that we can mess with, so it is a very serious
topic. This article discusses Russia s role in Syria and what Fischer thinks about their involvement.
Not wanting a world war to break out, Fischer is concerned that Russia is gaining leadership in an area
that they should not be. Instead the American leadership needs to step up because we can better the
Syria situation. As quoted in the article Lack of American leadership (has opened) a vacuum that is
being filled by a country that should not be a leader in that area. (Walton) I am not a person that likes
to be informed on what is internationally going on, but hearing that Russia is a threat in an area where

Examples Of Male Dominance In A Doll s House
Male dominance in a doll s house In a doll s house , Henrik Ibsen shows the dominance of male in the
society of that time . Although Nora is the mistress of the house but all the things are controlled by
Torvald . We see it when Nora says , Torvald certainly knows how to make a house attractive and
comfortable , which means that all the things in their house are kept to suit Torvalds s tastes . The wife
is expected to follow her husband without any question which is indicated again and again in the play .

This drama questions the authority of man over woman. While the Victorian woman did not usually
question their husband s entitlement to household authority, they desired trust and intimacy which
made them less ready to accept husbands who treated them as inferior being which is reflected in Nora
s reaction in the last scene. Women were less educated which made them vulnerable in the society this
also made living alone for the women very difficult as they had no source of income. Even if the
woman was educated they were allowed to do low paying jobs only. During the Victorian period men
and women s roles became sharply defined than at any time in history. Men and women had their
different spheres which were not allowed to mingle with each other. They didn t interfere in each other
s matters. As we see in the drama Helmer has his own study where he was undisrupted. Women didn t
had any say in the decisions pertaining to their social well being. Everything was decided by the male
and the female had to follow it. Too many rules and regulations were imposed on women. Women
were expected to engage in fragile and simple

Biography Of Teres Teresa
Teresa s standing does not consist in what she tells us about herself but in what she tells us about God
and his ways with us. Her life and her accomplishments have earned her many labels, reformer,
author, foundress, doctor of the church and saint and these, together with her persona have made her
one of the great women of all ages. She was born, bred and lived during the most harrowing period in
the history of Roman Catholicism, the age of Reformation and Counter Reformation. When Teresa
was possibly two in 1517, somewhere in the north of Germany, a man by the name of Martin Luther
was calling for reform in the Catholic Church. At that time, nobody would have guessed or known that
this two year old would one day contribute to turn the tides of the Catholic Reformation, pointing the
way from outer chaos to inner peace. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What is most consistent with her autobiography is she was born into a family that was devoted and
feared God. A story that struck me to understand her evolution is one that mentions that when she was
five years old she managed to convince her older brother to go off to the land of the Moors and beg
them, out of love of God, to cut off our heads there. Apparently they did not get too far as they were
returned by their uncle. With this story in mind, one senses how adventurous and daring Teresa could
have been and that her journey through life was going to be an interesting one. Teresa grew up like
any other normal teenage child and one could actually say, she was a rather modernized teenage young
girl because of her interest in romantic books. What I have come to know is she was an avid reader,
which may have played a role in her

Socio-Erapo-Social-Work Theory And Social Work
Introduction Throughout the social work profession, there is ongoing interest in building a social
science agenda that can address the complex practice based questions faced by social work
professionals today, says Matto and Goltzman (2010). As a social worker it is vital, to use our tools
and skills we have learned in order to assist our clients to the best of our ability and knowledge. Social
workers can use models and theories such as the bio psycho social model, development factors, as
well as, theoretical perspectives in order to gain a firm understanding of the individual s environment
and how it effects their development. These theories have helped to attempt us to understand and
explain human behavior, relationship, and social issues; however, this theory has taught social workers
what we practice on an everyday basis and how we interact and intergrade with society through,
evidence based practice helps understand human behavior. Emma is a five year old girl who has
experienced a significant amount of trauma for her age, in both educational and home environments.
As a result, Emma struggles with behavioral issues that have brought forth possible developmental
delays. Emma, struggles academically and struggles to communicate effectively with classmates. She

Analyzing Helen Keller s Excerpt From The Story Of My Life
Helen Keller is a name that almost everyone in our country knows. She is famous, not only for her
unfortunate and extremely limiting disabilities, but for the unrelenting effort she put forward to
overcome them. Despite being both blind and deaf, she was eager to learn. In this excerpt from The
Story of My Life, Keller tells the story of the day that the fire for learning was lit inside of her.
Through her writing, Keller uses tone, perspective, and emotional appeal to present her feelings to
readers. Throughout the passage, Keller s tone changes. In the beginning, the tone is heavier and
frustrated, because this is how Keller was feeling at the beginning of the story. She was having trouble
understanding the concept of words, and the way that they related to the world around her. Keller
became extremely frustrated with her own limitations, and even threw down a new doll that her tutor
had given to her, shattering it into a multitude of pieces. Later in the passage, Keller describes her joy
at going outside, and from that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

first paragraph, Keller expresses that she was unable to fell a strong connection to anything, because
she could not see or hear. Later in the passage, she also expresses that she could not form thoughts,
because she did not know any words. In the end, she also expresses how delighted it made her feel to
make the connection between the objects she could feel and the letters that were written on her palm
She was eager to give everything around her a name, to be able to express the way that she was
feeling. All of these things help readers to have some feeling of the way that Keller felt, and the
struggles that she went through. This makes readers appreciate the ending of the passage even more,
because they can relate to Keller s

Increasing Rates of Teenage Pregnancy
The problem to be addressed by this proposal is the issue of teenagers pregnancy rates are increasing.
Since 2007 we have steadily be rising by 1% every year (Center for Disease Control). In addition we
are ranked as the number one nation in the world for having the most teenagers becoming parents. Are
teenagers being prepared and educated adequately in the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases and
the risks of pregnancies? In my experience no, just last year I had a freshman student who gave birth
in October. This incident was shocking and alarming. Also to be determined if teens are in fact

The Origins Of Lean Thinking
1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The origins of lean thinking is actually created from the manufacturing
industry. In the manufacturing or production industry, lean management design approach main
objective is focusing on the elimination of waste and having a smooth workflow through a right
process. Lean also enables the organization to improve performance. In the construction industry, lean
thinking still consider a new way or method of managing project in construction. Lean in the
construction is an issue of developing a new thinking, knowledge and adopting new culture. On the
other point, lean focused on value and the right process that would maximised value and moving
towards perfection. Moving from a traditional way of managing construction project to lean will
requires extra effort, not just changing the works procedure but far from that. Changing the way we
think about construction to a new paradigm; lean in construction. On the other hand, off site
construction has been applied in the construction industry quite a while, especially in United Kingdom
construction industry. It just a matter of people perception on accepting these off site construction
method. In other country off site construction also known as Industrialised Building System (IBS). Off
site construction method is about moving the site activities away from the actual construction site into
a controlled environment and organising the work force into production line look alike. Due to

Media Impact On Teenagers
The Media and Body Image of Teenagers What s on the outside doesn t matter, its what s on the inside
that matters . We hear sayings such as this all the time, yet we live in a society that contradicts this
idea constantly. There is no doubt that due to media, the way teens see themselves has changed. The
media is setting unrealistic beauty standards, which influences everyone, and this is having a
detrimental affect on adolescents. The impact of media on teenagers is appalling. These beauty
standards are negatively affecting teenage girls as well as teenage boys, and due to the prominence of
this issue, several efforts are being made to combat this. Firstly, the media has greatly affected the way
teenage girls now look at themselves and specifically at their bodies. This is encouraged by the ideal
body image that is created by the media. For some reason, the ideal image is portrayed as a skinny,
tall, size 2 model with perfect skin. And if you don t have that, there s hope yet because having an
hourglass body is equally appreciated. These are not realistic images as no more than 15% of women
actually look like this. Then there is the concept of fat versus thick. This is the idea that having extra
fat below your waist is known as thick but having extra fat above your waist is considered fat . In
today s media being thick is a compliment yet no one wants to be fat. Many people don t understand
how real this problem actually is. In fact, celebrities such as Emma Watson have talked about how
they continuously feel pressured by the media to look a certain way and she says that when she didn t
meet those expectations, she would fall into anxiety. She says, If that s how I feel and I get to be the
person who s on the cover of those magazines how s anyone else meant to cope? This is proof that the
ideal body image is not realistic, even for celebrities, and due to this, it is almost impossible for
fashion companies to find models that fit this standard. So, many labels and companies have resorted
to using a process called airbrushing. This involves retouching photos to remove what the media refers
to as flaws and it can also be used to change or enhance the image. These transforms photos using

An Army Of One-Me Analysis

Me because of their high self esteem. Jean Twenge analyzes the self esteem in her essay An Army of
One: Me , and she sheds light on the difference between baby boomers and the generation me, making
us to rethink why self esteem is such a severe problem to the generation me, but benefit the boomers.
Though it may sounds hard to understand what causes the difference, but by viewing Maggie Nelson s

A misleading immediate context can give false sense to the GenMe, while a positive immediate
context can give solutions to problems. When saying immediate context , Gladwell claims it as
Specific and relatively small elements in the environment (162). These small elements, or signals, are
serving as tipping points, which shows that changes are always possible if we can simply change the
immediate context. That is, we should always notice the both sides of immediate context. For
example, when the crime rate was extremely high in the New York, David Gunn realized that graffiti
in the subway system is one of the small elements that send disorders to the public. On the one side,
The graffiti was symbolic of the collapse of the system (Gladwell 152). On another side, the graffiti
also gives a solution to the crime problem that if we clean up the graffiti, signals of disorders will be
changes immediately into good orders. Similarly, most of the GenMe misunderstand the meaning of
high self esteem because they received wrong signals from the immediate context. Twenge lists some
examples of the educational immediate context by saying that, In the United States, office stores have
started carrying large stocks of purple pens, as some teachers say that red ink is too scary for children
s papers (499). The change of colors is one small signal, and students will respond due to this signal
automatically. Instead of feeling

The Basic Skills Of A Social Worker
As a social worker it is important to have basic communication skills in order to connect with clients.
There are six basic and four advanced skills that are used in direct practice to make communication
more effective. The basic skills include reflection of feelings, paraphrasing, open ended questions,
closed ended questions, clarification and attending behaviors. Advanced skills are summarization,
information giving, interpretation and confrontation. Not only is it important to know what these skills
are, it is also important to know what the appropriate and inappropriate uses are. It also important to
self reflect on your use of these skills and whether it is a strength or something to continue to work to
improve. Paraphrasing is a skill that is used to restate a client s message using your own words. In this
way a social worker can check to see if his/her perceptions are similar to the clients. By paraphrasing
it gives a client the opportunity to comment back on what the social worker has said and also to
confirm that their message is being understood by the SW. This is also used so that you know that it is
okay to move to another topic. Appropriate uses of this skill would be when a client has made an
important point, and bring focus to an idea. Paraphrasing should not be used to mimic a response or
when a client is experiencing an extreme emotional response (Cummins, Sevel, Pedrick, p.86). I am
fairly comfortable with using paraphrasing. I do feel I need a lot more

The Symbols Of Lucille Desiree Ball
What is an American icon? According to Webster s Dictionary, it is a person or thing that is idolized. It
is someone who, by mention of their name, will remind people of who they are and what they are
famous for. Synonyms include representation and symbol. When you hear the name Lucille Ball or I
Love Lucy you probably think of a skittish red head who had eccentric expressions and made America
laugh. Lucille Desiree Ball was, and still is, an American icon because of what she represented in all
four of her shows, how she changed the television and movie industry, and her fashion sense which
created a well known look for herself. Lucille Ball was born on August 6, 1911, in Jamestown, New
York, to Henry and Desiree Ball. She also had a younger brother, Fred, who was born four years later
in 1915. While Lucille s mother was still pregnant with Fred, her father was struck with typhoid fever
and passed away. After her father passed away, her mother eventually remarried to Ed Peterson. Ed,
not being a fan of children, decided that he and Desiree would move to Detroit without Lucille s kids.
Fred moved in with Desiree s parents, and Lucille moved in with Ed s parents. Lucille recalled her
new family being very poor and strict, saying that they didn t even have enough money for school
pencils. Ed s mother taught her needlework, which is how she ended up loving to crochet for the rest

Nasa s The Space Of Space
After NASA s moon landing among other achievements during the Space Race, many Americans
yearned to explore the depths of the unknown Universe. From quasars to brown dwarf stars, there are
many wonders that the universe holds for the human race if we decide to leap into the exploration of
the universe. Some may believe that reaching for the stars is too costly. However, the exploration of
space is within our grasp, and by increasing NASA s funding, we are able to reach them. So yes, we
should fund our space administration in order for us to reach the stars. Firstly, without sufficient
funding, NASA would be politically reliant on Russia due to NASA s need to launch its commercial
crew using Russian spaceships on Russian land. According to The Guardian, NASA s budget has
dropped from 4.41 percent of the federal budget in 1966, to today s budget of 0.5 percent of the
federal budget. As a result of continued decrease in funds, NASA has been severely crippled in its
ability to operate; this is why NASA s budget needs to be increased. Without funds nor vehicles to
transport its astronauts, NASA must rely on its Russian counterpart in order to fly Americans into
space. Due to a rocky relationship with Russia that stems from the Cold War, it is not viable for us to
depend our entire space commercial crew program with Russia. Depending on Russia also causes
NASA as well as the United States to look weak in front of the national community. Such weakness
may cause our political

Learning And Leading With Habits Of Mind
In a state of dilemma, individuals find it interesting when people confronted with life s problems. The
way people behave when the answers to which are not immediately known. Different situation, people
have to think of different technique to solve the problems. Analyzing a poem is different from
analyzing statistical data. Both are related to analyzing but the mind has to be aware of each situation
to apply in any cases. Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind talks about sixteen ways people use
when it comes to describing the Habits of Mind. Curiosity is what motivates deep thinking when
questioning and posing problems habit. The bravery to take responsible risks habit and listening with
understand and empathy habit when hearing stories from others. For me, one of the most important
habit that I have learned the most is responsible risks. Being greedy and wanted to be success in two
categories is not going to work, I have to decide on letting go of one and remain focus on the one that
I am planning to take the risk on.

Positive And Negative Effects Of Gender Stereotyping
Throughout society there are many different cultural and social perceptions that allow people to form
judgmental beliefs about society. Encompassed within these perceptions are stereotypes and prejudice.
Stereotypes and prejudice are examples of categorizations of people which allow our brains to fill in
the types or interactions that may happen with people. There are different positive and negative forms
of stereo types and prejudice that effect our interaction with individuals resulting in judgmental
affliction upon individuals or groups. This essay will analyze and provide examples of the positive and
negative effects of gender stereotyping and prejudice. Stereotyping can come in many different forms
and have many different subjects. One form of stereotyping is of gender. Just about everyone holds
stereotypes of women and men some positive and some negative. Women are more empathic and
talkative; men are more competent and aggressive. For example, are women really more empathic
than men? Which women? Empathic toward whom? When women s and men s actual behavior is
observed systematically under a variety of conditions, the sexes do not differ in having feelings of
empathy or in its expression (book, p. 365). Social pressures influence how we conform to these
stereotypes, however it does create a problem when people are victimized by the negative stereotypes
of their gender or group. There are different connotations that can be identified when stereotyping:
positive, women are better caregivers and men are better breadwinners or money makers. These
positive connotations can be taken negative towards the other gender or even their own gender men
can be caretakers too and women can make money. In the early 1900 s there was a high discrimination
towards women, women entering the work force worked in factory lines, while men worked
management which resulted in lower pay for women kept the men in charge. Over the years gender
roles have taken a turn and there is now a significant increase with women working and taking on
management roles. Roles in society are different between genders and those differences either positive
or negative will hopefully diminish after time.

1.1 Explain The Difference Between Fire Intensity And...
1.1 Explain (using words) how each of these three is calculated and identify the primary variable(s)
used in the calculations. Describe how these variables cause this influence.
Fireline intensity (IB) the rate of heat released over a set distance by the actively flaming front of the
fire (kW/m). It is calculated by measuring the weight of the fuel burned and the rate of spread.
The equation is IB = w h R
w is the weight of the fuel consumed by the fire (kg m 2).
h is the low fuel heat content and is a constant. 18260 kJ kg 1 = h
R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1).
The weight of the fuel and the rate of spread affect fire intensity by increasing or decreasing it, which
in turn affects the fireline intensity. The heavier the fuel is, the more there is and the faster the spread
therefore increasing both the fire intensity and fireline intensity. The lighter the fuel, the less there is
and the slower the spread therefore decreasing both types of intensities.
Heat per Unit Area (HA) is the total heat released from a given area (kJ m 2). Heat per Unit Area is a
measurement of rate of spread and flame length.
The equation is HA = (60 IB) / R
IB is the fireline intensity (kJ m 1 s 1).
R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1).

The fire intensity varies on the type and amount of understory growth and if there is build up of dead,
dry material. In a Postoak stand with a grass understory fire intensity will be low and will not produce
flame lengths long enough to scorch tree crowns. In a Postoak stand with a yaupon/juniper understory,
the fire intensity will will be high and will produce flame lengths adequate enough to scorch tree
crowns. In an open juniper stand within a grass matrix, the fire intensity will be low to medium
depending on how tall the grass is and if there is a build up of dead, dry fuel under the juniper stands.
There will be no crown scorching in juniper

Empress Cixi Research Paper
The effects that the Xinhai revolution had on the Chinese government system and the social hierarchy
of the time renders the old political adage, Despite the best laid plans, not all desires are realised false,
I will be mainly focusing on the motives and actions Sun Yat sen and his followers and the patterns of
change in the chinese government and social hieracy of the time. The two main goals of the revolution
were for China to become a republic where the people decided their leader and to have a social
hierarchy both of these goals were met. It was also very successful in the sense of the majority of the
Chinese citizens getting what they desired by over throwing the Qing Empire and turning China into a
republic. This was mainly in response ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many drastic changes to the Chinese social hierarchy were also evident as a result as the Xinhai
revolution. People were considered more equal in all aspects of life. Such as social status, people
could eat what they wanted; dress how they pleased and your class did not necessarily determine your
occupation. Before the revolution your class in the social hierarchy determined what you where
allowed to wear out in public and what you could eat (Woollacott, 2012). Your class also determined
your occupation therefore peasants would have jobs like farming and most upper class would not even
need a job. (Randolph, 4, 2012). The revolution also brought more social equality to china in the sense
off al class having a say in who runs their country. Before the revolution the very high upper class and
the royalty were the only ones with a real say (Randolph, 4, 2012). The empires / who would run
China would be chosen by other royalty and the highest upper class citizens (Randolph, 4, 2012).
After the revolution all people in China would have a say whom would be president. All people from
concubines to royalty had the same vote and if a person had the majority of votes they would rule
china until the next election (People s Daily, September 22, 2011). The pattern of change in social
hierarchy of China and how people were considered to have equal rights is another way the revolution

John The Baptist Is Celebrated At St. John s Eve
John the Baptist is celebrated at St. John s Eve, which is usually celebrated on the same day as
Midsummer or Litha. In this article we will be delving into the mystery of John the Baptist in both
christianity and paganism. It s speculated wildly on him being based off an old pagan god, Oannes.
Therefore we will be looking at the history of both gods and both religions. We will also be looking at
similarities and inequalities.
John the Baptist and Oannes
John the Baptist baptized people before Jesus did and even Jesus himself. He was born 6 months
before Jesus and a lot of people speculated on him being the Messiah. However, John did never put
himself higher than Jesus, he simply prepared the way. In Mattheus 11, John says, I baptize you with
water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not
worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand,
and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with
unquenchable fire. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried
to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? Jesus replied, Let it be so
now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfull all righteousness. Then John consented. As soon as Jesus
was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit
of God descending like a

Several changes would undoubtedly have surprised a knowledgeable observer, including the
emergence of Islam;
the revival of China and Western Europe;
the collapse of the Byzantine Empire;
the emergence of Russia and the spread of Christianity into that region;
the emergence of states in Southeast Asia;
the emergence of Japan;
the emergence of powerful empires in West Africa.
However, some features would still be recognizable, such as the persistence of Paleolithic, agricultural
village, and herding societies;
the continuance, albeit at a more intense rate, of long distance commerce and exchange;
the persistence of broad cultural traditions, especially in the Mesoamerican, Andean, Chinese,
European, and Indian civilizations.
4.
A global traveler of the fifteenth century might have predicted that Islam, Buddhism, and perhaps
Christianity would continue to spread;
that the established cultural regions of China, India, the Islamic world, Christian Europe, the Andes,
and Mesoamerica would continue to develop and expand;
that long distance commerce and exchange would continue to have an important impact on the
development of civilizations;
that empires would continue to have a growing influence on world history;
that the regions occupied by Paleolithic, agricultural village, and herding societies would continue to
shrink.

Joint Enterprise Ending Crime
Joint enterprise, ending crime or escalating jail rates? In this day and age crime is crazy, a leap in
crimes committed, the population is growing and so the demand for technology is increasing, this only
results in more crime, more criminals and more witnesses. Joint enterprise is a new law recently re
introduced aiming to reduce the amount of criminals but ended up punishing the innocent witnesses.
Joint enterprise is a topic in which experts have been debating about for a long time. Some believe that
joint enterprise is a form of human rights abuse whereas others think it is just. Imagine an innocent
bystander accused for something they didn t do, imagine their families devastated by the news and
their mothers tears, parents losing their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a major factor of why the joint enterprise is bad. Joint enterprise usually convicts the wrong
people sending them to jail, devastating families, filling up jails all coming out of our tax money.
Think about it, whenever you see the facts of people going to jail, not all of them are criminals. For
example the case Derek Bentley, a vulnerable teenager, who was hanged despite public outrage in
1953 after being convicted of murder under joint enterprise law as he was accused of murdering a
police officer. His conviction was overturned almost fifty years later exclusively due to the efforts of
his sister Iris. His sister Iris made a massive campaign, which was initially led by Derek s parents until
they died, which led to his remains being removed from Wandsworth Prison and reburied in a family
grave. There are many cases just like this such as the case of Jasbir Takhar who on the 5th of August
2010, was convicted of murder in Birmingham crown court and sentenced to 29 years in prison. He

This practice skill was use during most of my time mentoring with the children in the program. During

A Raisin In The Sun Character Analysis
A Raisin in the Sun is about the dream of the Youngers, a black family living in South Side Chicago in
the 1950s. Like any family, the Youngers dream is a stitched together mosaic; as they impatiently wait
for the arrival of an insurance check for ten thousand dollars, each member of the Younger clan has a
slightly different dream for the money. Yet when the check actually arrives, their dreams collide. Even
as the dream of each relation moves closer to reality, the family fragments. The struggle between
material desires and family ideals escalates into a heavy and bittersweet drama. There are a couple of
prominent themes throughout A Raisin in the Sun. There s the obvious theme to follow and work hard
for your dreams, the importance of having a healthy family relationship and pride. The main focus of
the play is on dreams. Each of the characters has a dream of their own. For Beneatha, she desires to go
to school to become a doctor. During a scene Beneatha explains why she wants to become a doctor she
wants to help people, That was what one person could do for another, fix him up sew up the problem,
make him all right again. That was the most marvelous thing in the world...I wanted to do that. I
always thought it was the one concrete thing in the world that a human being could do. Fix up the
sick, you know and make them whole again. This was truly being God...I wanted to cure. It used to be
so important to me. I wanted to cure. It used to matter. I used to care. I mean about people and how
their bodies hurt... (14) Beneatha works hard and tries her best even when others, such as her
boyfriend Asagai, try to discourage her. For Walter, it is his desire to make money to support his
family and lead a good life. Walter tries many different methods to get money, but they were not
successful. In fact due to his dissatisfaction it led him to hurt others around him. Especially in this
scene where Ruth opens up to Mama about how worried she is for Walter, Mama, something is
happening between Walter and me. I don t know what it is but he needs something something I can t
give him anymore. He needs this chance, Lena. (187). As for Mama, it i s her dream for Travis to have

Disadvantages Of Phonetics
Although we may not realize it, phonetics can be seen in many aspects throughout the world. The best
place to see these differences is to travel, to adapt to a different culture and to recognize the
similarities and differences that all human beings share. When discussing travelling, Henry Miller says
it best, One s destination is never a place, but rather a new way of looking at things (Miller, 1957).
One of the main differences seen across the world is the language and way in which people
communicate. Communication is essential to human interaction, but verbal communication is not
universal. In the United States, although it is only one country, there is a multitude of different
languages that we may hear on a daily basis, such as Spanish, French, and Chinese. In addition to
different languages, there are accents that vary within specific states that produce phonemes slightly
different than one another. Because of this, it is inevitable that one who travels will also encounter
different speech patterns than they are particularly used to hearing in their native lands. Due to the
various forms of verbal communication encountered while travelling, I decided to interview one of my
good friends from high school, Emilie Boman, who spent last semester studying abroad in London,
England. Emilie Boman is a senior business major at Susquehanna University who took advantage of
their study abroad program. While she was in London, she was able to travel to several other

How Couples Can Improve Relationship Satisfaction For The...
Introduction Couples therapy has shown to significantly improve relationship satisfaction for the aver
couple (Doss Others, 2014). What distinguishes a healthy well functioning couple from a
dysfunctional couple? A healthy well functioning couple consists of two people who not only love
each other, but also hold a high level of respect and acceptance for one another. Communication is
also a key component in well functioning couples. The root of most problems within couples is a lack
of honest communication. In healthy relationships, there is always room for growth, both as a couple
and individually. Another big aspect in healthy relationships is that each person as a life outside of the
relationship. They aren t completely dependent on each other s happiness. It is important for
individuals to love and respect themselves and not commit to a relationship because of the lack of
these qualities. In contrast, a pathological dysfunctional couple as two people who lack respect, open
communication, and are disloyal to each other. In dysfunctional relationships, couples are typically
inconsistent in sharing their wants and needs. One reasoning for this may be that they are not honest
with themselves therefore lack knowledge of what they want or need from the relationship.
Dysfunctional relationships may consist of one or both individuals being too dependent on each other,
giving the other person control over their own happiness. Dysfunctional marriages not only receive

naturally frightening location of the secluded forest to contribute to the terror felt by both the
characters and the audience. When scene design is heavily incorporated, such as in the final scene in
the witch s house, the design is expressed through subtleties that have been established earlier in the
film. Symbols and children s handprints on the walls of the decaying house imply that the house that
Mike and Heather find themselves in during the last scene is in fact the house that the children from
the townspeople s stories were killed in.
The first person point of view camera angle also allows the audience to experience the strange and
terrifying events that take place within the film by allowing them to adopt the perspective of the
characters in a way that cannot be accomplished with traditional film making techniques. This
adoption of perspective allows the audience to identify with the characters on a personal level, making
them open to the notions of orientations and ideas that seem ridiculous, such as continuing to film
regardless of the terrifying events that take

New Born Infants And Visual Acuity
New born infants have poor visual acuity as opposed to adults. Visual acuity measures to what extent
an individual can detect visual detail. Their lack of visual acuity means they see the world a more ill
defined manner. Adult visual acuity is thirty times the visual acuity of a new born (Van Hof van Duin
Mohn 1985). Atkinson Bradrick (1981), supported this and found that new born infants could only
detect the separation of lines if they are 30 times wider than the minimum width adults can detect.
There is at least a five fold improvement by 6 months of age in acuity, though it takes several years for
it to reach adult level, Brown Yamamoto 1986. New born infants also have poor visual
accommodation, needed to make sharp retinal images at different distances. Although infant
perception differs in terms of acuity, infant perception on size and shape constancy requires less
development. Adults understand that objects have a constant shape and size, regardless of their
distance, and the angle of perception. The developmental question lies on whether size and shape
principles guide infant perception, or whether constancies are developed through experience. This
argument is one of many in exploring whether infants learn through cognitive adaptations, or whether
they learn through experience and what the environment offers them. Previous assumptions by Piaget,
state that these principles were not present at birth, but developed towards the end of the first year.

Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Minister s Black Veil
In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Minister s Black Veil mystery plays a huge role when it comes to plot,
and character development. At the end of this story the minister who is wearing the veil rhetorically
asks, What but the mystery which it obscurely typifies has made this piece of crape so awful?
(Hawthorne 1044). Hawthorne has built up this character so carefully and intensely to this point, to
quite directly state that this veil on his face represents mystery. The minister also begs the question of,
what else does it represent? Asking his congregation, who also persecuted him, to look deep in
themselves and figure out the real reason for his apparel. The minister blatantly reveals that his veil
typifies mystery in a sense where his congregation cannot keep themselves together, unless they know
the absolute truth. Hawthorne uses this veil as a direct representation of mystery and self control, but
he also uses it as a symbol of a divine controller, tying in spirituality and religion. Towards the
beginning of the story the minister reveals himself looking different, as he wore an obvious black veil
over his face. His audience hated the idea of his new look as they muttered amongst themselves, I don
t like it, and Our parson has gone mad! (Hawthorne 1038). These two particular quotes obviously
reveal the initial distaste for the veil, but it also shows that the congregation could not even control
themselves, as they wondered why he wore this disgusting cover. The

Great Expectations (1860 61) and The Woman in Black (2012) both belong to the gothic genre, as their stories are set in an around dark isolated Victorian mansions, coupled with dull colours emphasising attitudes of anger, sadness and revenge. Miss Havisham in Great Expectations has lived a reclusive life since being told her husband to be would not marry her wanting to make revenge on males. American Airlines had been the largest airline in the United States for a long time. In 1990 and 1991 due to a recession and the Gulf War, demand for air travel dropped drastically, for this reason, fare wars started and all the airlines incurred massive losses. 3,4 The Airline industry and the market The airline industry is large, specially in the United States, mainly due to the Deregulation of the industry. In 1938, the Civil Aeronautics Board was created to control the growth of the air transportation industry. This board had the authority to control entry, exit, prices and methods of competition. In the late 1970 this structure was found inefficient and in 1978 deregulation took place. Due to the deregulation of the industry competition intensified, prices dropped, and the number of people travelling increased. Many new companies emerged and regional airlines saw deregulation as an opportunity to expand. Due to the rise in competition, by 1986 mergers started to take place and in 1987 64.8% of the market was controlled by the four largest airlines. The demand for air travel is determined mainly by price, studies revealed that half of the leisure travellers and on quarter of business travellers did not have a preference for a particular airline, which means that prices determined the ... We hear sayings such as this all the time, yet we live in a society that contradicts this idea constantly. There is no doubt that due to media, the way teens see themselves has changed. The media is setting unrealistic beauty standards, which influences everyone, and this is having a detrimental affect on adolescents. The impact of media on teenagers is appalling. These beauty standards are negatively affecting teenage girls as well as teenage boys, and due to the prominence of this issue, several efforts are being made to combat this. Firstly, the media has greatly affected the way teenage girls now look at themselves and specifically at their bodies. This is encouraged by the ideal body image that is created by the media. For some reason, the ideal image is portrayed as a skinny, tall, size 2 model with perfect skin. And if you don t have that, there s hope yet because having an hourglass body is equally appreciated. These are not realistic images as no more than 15% of women actually look like this. Then there is the concept of fat versus thick. This is the idea that having extra fat below your waist is known as thick but having extra fat above your waist is considered fat . In today s media being thick is a compliment yet no one wants to be fat. Many people don t understand how real this problem actually is. In fact, celebrities such as Emma Watson have talked about how they continuously feel pressured by the media to look a certain way and she says that when she didn t meet those expectations, she would fall into anxiety. She says, If that s how I feel and I get to be the person who s on the cover of those magazines how s anyone else meant to cope? This is proof that the ideal body image is not realistic, even for celebrities, and due to this, it is almost impossible for fashion companies to find models that fit this standard. So, many labels and companies have resorted to using a process called airbrushing. This involves retouching photos to remove what the media refers to as flaws and it can also be used to change or enhance the image. These transforms photos using programs ... A misleading immediate context can give false sense to the GenMe, while a positive immediate context can give solutions to problems. When saying immediate context , Gladwell claims it as Specific and relatively small elements in the environment (162). These small elements, or signals, are serving as tipping points, which shows that changes are always possible if we can simply change the immediate context. That is, we should always notice the both sides of immediate context. For example, when the crime rate was extremely high in the New York, David Gunn realized that graffiti in the subway system is one of the small elements that send disorders to the public. On the one side, The graffiti was symbolic of the collapse of the system (Gladwell 152). On another side, the graffiti also gives a solution to the crime problem that if we clean up the graffiti, signals of disorders will be changes immediately into good orders. Similarly, most of the GenMe misunderstand the meaning of high self esteem because they received wrong signals from the immediate context. Twenge lists some examples of the educational immediate context by saying that, In the United States, office stores have started carrying large stocks of purple pens, as some teachers say that red ink is too scary for children s papers (499). There are six basic and four advanced skills that are used in direct practice to make communication more effective. The basic skills include reflection of feelings, paraphrasing, open ended questions, closed ended questions, clarification and attending behaviors. Advanced skills are summarization, information giving, interpretation and confrontation. Not only is it important to know what these skills are, it is also important to know what the appropriate and inappropriate uses are. It also important to self reflect on your use of these skills and whether it is a strength or something to continue to work to improve. Paraphrasing is a skill that is used to restate a client s message using your own words. In this way a social worker can check to see if his/her perceptions are similar to the clients. By paraphrasing it gives a client the opportunity to comment back on what the social worker has said and also to confirm that their message is being understood by the SW. This is also used so that you know that it is okay to move to another topic. Appropriate uses of this skill would be when a client has made an important point, and bring focus to an idea. From quasars to brown dwarf stars, there are many wonders that the universe holds for the human race if we decide to leap into the exploration of the universe. Some may believe that reaching for the stars is too costly. However, the exploration of space is within our grasp, and by increasing NASA s funding, we are able to reach them. So yes, we should fund our space administration in order for us to reach the stars. Firstly, without sufficient funding, NASA would be politically reliant on Russia due to NASA s need to launch its commercial crew using Russian spaceships on Russian land. According to The Guardian, NASA s budget has dropped from 4.41 percent of the federal budget in 1966, to today s budget of 0.5 percent of the federal budget. As a result of continued decrease in funds, NASA has been severely crippled in its ability to operate; this is why NASA s budget needs to be increased. Without funds nor vehicles to transport its astronauts, NASA must rely on its Russian counterpart in order to fly Americans into space. Due to a rocky relationship with Russia that stems from the Cold War, it is not viable for us to depend our entire space commercial crew program with Russia. • 21. Positive And Negative Effects Of Gender Stereotyping Throughout society there are many different cultural and social perceptions that allow people to form judgmental beliefs about society. Encompassed within these perceptions are stereotypes and prejudice. Stereotypes and prejudice are examples of categorizations of people which allow our brains to fill in the types or interactions that may happen with people. There are different positive and negative forms of stereo types and prejudice that effect our interaction with individuals resulting in judgmental affliction upon individuals or groups. This essay will analyze and provide examples of the positive and negative effects of gender stereotyping and prejudice. Stereotyping can come in many different forms and have many different subjects. One form of stereotyping is of gender. Just about everyone holds stereotypes of women and men some positive and some negative. Women are more empathic and talkative; men are more competent and aggressive. For example, are women really more empathic than men? Which women? Empathic toward whom? When women s and men s actual behavior is observed systematically under a variety of conditions, the sexes do not differ in having feelings of empathy or in its expression (book, p. 365). Social pressures influence how we conform to these stereotypes, however it does create a problem when people are victimized by the negative stereotypes of their gender or group. There are different connotations that can be identified when stereotyping: positive, women are better caregivers and men are better breadwinners or money makers. These positive connotations can be taken negative towards the other gender or even their own gender men can be caretakers too and women can make money. In the early 1900 s there was a high discrimination towards women, women entering the work force worked in factory lines, while men worked management which resulted in lower pay for women kept the men in charge. Over the years gender roles have taken a turn and there is now a significant increase with women working and taking on management roles. Roles in society are different between genders and those differences either positive or negative will hopefully diminish after time. Prejudice often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. 1.1 Explain The Difference Between Fire Intensity And... 1.1 Explain (using words) how each of these three is calculated and identify the primary variable(s) used in the calculations. Describe how these variables cause this influence. Fireline intensity (IB) the rate of heat released over a set distance by the actively flaming front of the fire (kW/m). It is calculated by measuring the weight of the fuel burned and the rate of spread. The equation is IB = w h R w is the weight of the fuel consumed by the fire (kg m 2). h is the low fuel heat content and is a constant. 18260 kJ kg 1 = h R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1). The weight of the fuel and the rate of spread affect fire intensity by increasing or decreasing it, which in turn affects the fireline intensity. The heavier the fuel is, the more there is and the faster the spread therefore increasing both the fire intensity and fireline intensity. The lighter the fuel, the less there is and the slower the spread therefore decreasing both types of intensities. Heat per Unit Area (HA) is the total heat released from a given area (kJ m 2). Heat per Unit Area is a measurement of rate of spread and flame length. The equation is HA = (60 IB) / R IB is the fireline intensity (kJ m 1 s 1). R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1). After graduating, he attended Loyola University and began majoring in physics. Clancy was also a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps, or ROTC. Though he was very willing to serve, he was turned down after trying to enlist due to his myopia. He then switched his major to English and graduated in 1969 (Carlson, Michael). Clancy had dreamed of becoming a tank commander since he was little. When the Army turned him down, his dreams were ruined, and he had to turn to something else. He then thought of writing, but was sidetracked when he married Mrs. Wanda Thomas (Newsmakers, ¶3). They then had children, whom they named Michelle, Christine, Tom, and Kathleen (Newsmakers). Empress Cixi Research Paper The effects that the Xinhai revolution had on the Chinese government system and the social hierarchy of the time renders the old political adage, Despite the best laid plans, not all desires are realised false, I will be mainly focusing on the motives and actions Sun Yat sen and his followers and the patterns of change in the chinese government and social hieracy of the time. The two main goals of the revolution were for China to become a republic where the people decided their leader and to have a social hierarchy both of these goals were met. It was also very successful in the sense of the majority of the Chinese citizens getting what they desired by over throwing the Qing Empire and turning China into a republic. People were considered more equal in all aspects of life. Such as social status, people could eat what they wanted; dress how they pleased and your class did not necessarily determine your occupation. Before the revolution your class in the social hierarchy determined what you where allowed to wear out in public and what you could eat (Woollacott, 2012). Your class also determined your occupation therefore peasants would have jobs like farming and most upper class would not even need a job. (Randolph, 4, 2012). The revolution also brought more social equality to china in the sense off al class having a say in who runs their country. Before the revolution the very high upper class and the royalty were the only ones with a real say (Randolph, 4, 2012). The empires / who would run China would be chosen by other royalty and the highest upper class citizens (Randolph, 4, 2012). After the revolution all people in China would have a say whom would be president. All people from concubines to royalty had the same vote and if a person had the majority of votes they would rule china until the next election (People s Daily, September 22, 2011). In this article we will be delving into the mystery of John the Baptist in both christianity and paganism. It s speculated wildly on him being based off an old pagan god, Oannes. Therefore we will be looking at the history of both gods and both religions. We will also be looking at similarities and inequalities. John the Baptist and Oannes John the Baptist baptized people before Jesus did and even Jesus himself. He was born 6 months before Jesus and a lot of people speculated on him being the Messiah. However, John did never put himself higher than Jesus, he simply prepared the way. In Mattheus 11, John says, I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfull all righteousness. Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. The best place to see these differences is to travel, to adapt to a different culture and to recognize the similarities and differences that all human beings share. When discussing travelling, Henry Miller says it best, One s destination is never a place, but rather a new way of looking at things (Miller, 1957). One of the main differences seen across the world is the language and way in which people communicate. Communication is essential to human interaction, but verbal communication is not universal. In the United States, although it is only one country, there is a multitude of different languages that we may hear on a daily basis, such as Spanish, French, and Chinese. In addition to different languages, there are accents that vary within specific states that produce phonemes slightly different than one another. Because of this, it is inevitable that one who travels will also encounter different speech patterns than they are particularly used to hearing in their native lands. Due to the various forms of verbal communication encountered while travelling, I decided to interview one of my good friends from high school, Emilie Boman, who spent last semester studying abroad in London, England. A healthy well functioning couple consists of two people who not only love each other, but also hold a high level of respect and acceptance for one another. • 46. New Born Infants And Visual Acuity New born infants have poor visual acuity as opposed to adults. Visual acuity measures to what extent an individual can detect visual detail. Their lack of visual acuity means they see the world a more ill defined manner. Adult visual acuity is thirty times the visual acuity of a new born (Van Hof van Duin Mohn 1985). Atkinson Bradrick (1981), supported this and found that new born infants could only detect the separation of lines if they are 30 times wider than the minimum width adults can detect. There is at least a five fold improvement by 6 months of age in acuity, though it takes several years for it to reach adult level, Brown Yamamoto 1986. New born infants also have poor visual accommodation, needed to make sharp retinal images at different distances. Although infant perception differs in terms of acuity, infant perception on size and shape constancy requires less development. Adults understand that objects have a constant shape and size, regardless of their distance, and the angle of perception. The developmental question lies on whether size and shape principles guide infant perception, or whether constancies are developed through experience. This argument is one of many in exploring whether infants learn through cognitive adaptations, or whether they learn through experience and what the environment offers them. Previous assumptions by Piaget, state that these principles were not present at birth, but developed towards the end of the first year. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Minister s Black Veil In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Minister s Black Veil mystery plays a huge role when it comes to plot, and character development. At the end of this story the minister who is wearing the veil rhetorically asks, What but the mystery which it obscurely typifies has made this piece of crape so awful? (Hawthorne 1044). Hawthorne has built up this character so carefully and intensely to this point, to quite directly state that this veil on his face represents mystery. The minister also begs the question of, what else does it represent? Asking his congregation, who also persecuted him, to look deep in themselves and figure out the real reason for his apparel. The minister blatantly reveals that his veil typifies mystery in a sense where his congregation cannot keep themselves together, unless they know the absolute truth. Hawthorne uses this veil as a direct representation of mystery and self control, but he also uses it as a symbol of a divine controller, tying in spirituality and religion. Towards the beginning of the story the minister reveals himself looking different, as he wore an obvious black veil over his face. His audience hated the idea of his new look as they muttered amongst themselves, I don t like it, and Our parson has gone mad! (Hawthorne 1038). These two particular quotes obviously reveal the initial distaste for the veil, but it also shows that the congregation could not even control themselves, as they wondered why he wore this disgusting cover.
