Erich Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front Essay
Erich Remarque s All Quiet on the Western Front
I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and fatuous
superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow. I see how peoples are set against one another, and in
silence, unknowingly, foolishly, obediently, innocently slay one another (263). Powerful changes
result from horrifying experiences. Paul Baumer, the protagonists of Erich Remarque s All Quiet on
the Western Front utters these words signifying the loss of his humanity and the reduction to a numbed
creature, devoid of emotion. Paul s character originates in the novel as a young adult, out for an
adventure, and eager to serve his country. He never realizes the terrible pressures that war ... Show

He states that when he goes home, his family will be shocked to hear this language. Paul treats his
lingual freedom as privilege that soldiers have, and shows the benefits of living a soldier s life. He
refers to the front as if it were a paradise, for he can use vulgar language and not worry about manners
and decorum. He treats his service as a time for relaxation, recreation, and a little excitement. This
attitude becomes short lived as the realities of war sink in. When Paul volunteers for reconnaissance
one night, he becomes stranded in No Man s Land (the area between opposing trenches) and begins to
realize the brutality of war and starts to lose his own humanity. At the beginning of the book, Paul
shows care towards his fellow soldiers and treats his service as an adventure by his education of the
recruits and his excitement towards the boundaries of his vocabulary.
When Paul becomes stranded in No Man s Land, he undergoes the transformation from a carefree
young adult to an inhumane, lifeless shell of a man. The change begins when Paul hides in a shell
hole, waiting for a pause in the bombardment. A French soldier jumps in as well, looking for shelter.
Paul has prepared for this circumstance and stabs him three times. Paul s strikes are not mortal
enough, for the wounds do not immediately kill the Frenchman. The enemy soldier dies over the next
day, and while the soldier slides inexorably into the throes of death, Paul

Medical Injection
Traditional injection uses a syringe to insert liquid into body. The purpose of medical injection is to
pierce the material into the sufficient depth of skin. This kind of injection needs to use large number of
syringe needles, and according to [62],clients reported that an average of 8.7% of injections employed
shared syringe needles. Data from the Coalition for safe Community Needle Disposal showed that in
the year of 2011, 13.5 million people in the United States produced 7.8 billion used sharps(needles,
syringes, etc.) outside the traditional healthcare, and 1 million to 1.5 million of needles were used for
illegal drug injections. Since blood borne infections, like HIV, HBV, and HCV, can be commonly
spread by sharing intravenous syringes, huge number of substandard and illegal use of needles
compares to share rate of 8.7%, the potential spread of these infections cannot be ignored. Meanwhile,
on the other side, the application of micro needle can to large extent avoid this from its source. Micro
needles, which are recently developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) [63, 64], are small patches that can be administered by
untrained users. Small needles are placed on the patch of about a square centimeter. ... Show more

Spectral element method used in computational fluid dynamics is explained in [15] and [46]. For
spectral element models of micro needle, the process is divided into two parts, the model of flow in
micro needle and the model of solution flux inside human skin. Incompressible NavierStokes
equations with slip boundary condition are solved inside micro needle. And the human skin is treated
as porous media, so Darcy Brinkman equation is solved to simulate this process. At the same time, the
output data of micro needle are taken as initial conditions of Darcy Brinkman

Hospital For A Scheduled Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Removal
A 62 year old white male presented to the hospital for a scheduled ventriculoperitoneal shunt removal.
The patient had developed cysts in the brain seventeen years ago in 1998 leading to increased
intracranial pressures from accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid. After discovering the brain cysts, the
patient underwent a ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. Two years after the shunt was placed, the
patient underwent another procedure for shunt revisions due to complications with infection. Now, the
patient is presenting for removal of the shunt. In the pre op holding area, the patient s vital signs were
taken. The patient s blood pressure was 153/75, heart rate 80, respirations 18, oxygen saturation 93%
on room air, and temperature was 36.5 degrees Celsius. Prior to the patient s surgery, lab work was
performed consisting of a CBC and CMP. The patient s white blood cell count was 11.7, platelets 379,
hemoglobin was 10.8 and hematocrit was 33. The patient s potassium level was 3.7, calcium 9.1,
sodium 145, BUN 35, and creatinine 2.21. The patient had a medical history of hypertension,
hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction in 2010, COPD, pulmonary embolism,
prostate cancer, gastro esophageal reflux disease, and small bowel adhesions. The patient had an
echocardiogram six months ago with an ejection fraction of 45%. Individuals with an EF of 25% to

Indigenous People And The Media
Indigenous Studies is a very interesting unit as I am able to learn and discover more in depth about
Indigenous People. However, the lecture that got me into deep thoughts was on Indigenous People and
the Media. I kept asking myself; why do we view people that way? Why is it we change impressions
when it s a different race to ours? Now thinking back, I ve come to realise that media has a big
influence to our everyday lives. Indigenous Australians in media are not highly recognised for positive
news. The way the media interprets sources of information about the Indigenous Peoples has change
the views on what we think of them. Now this has become a huge effect on the Indigenous Peoples as
it lead to stereotyping, racism and discrimination. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mainstream media tends to focus on the negative side about Indigenous Peoples like the problems and
the relationship between the Indigenous Peoples and the public (McCallum, Waller, 2013).
Educational systems are the same, as the students learn more on the negative history of the Indigenous
Peoples instead of the contemporary arts and performances of Aboriginal history. This leads to the
view of many Indigenous children feeling outcast as people stereotype on their race when they don t
(Salote Bovoro, 2008, citied in Korff, 2016). We cannot deny that everyone stereotypes, including
myself but I have become more aware that I should think before I do or say something. I was taught in
previous years that I should ask myself, what if someone said that to you, how would you feel? That s
the same with Indigenous Peoples, they don t want to be treated that way because yes, everyone is
different, but we don t need to point it out and criticise about it.
RACISM/DISCRIMINATION
As the unit is about Indigenous Peoples, people thinks that this is the most sensitive topic as people
tend to think before they say something, unlike how they describe people who are the same as them.
During the lecture on People and Media , it was a discussion where we were to describe the picture
that is shown to us. For the first half, it showed pictures of the everyday lifestyle of ordinary Non
Indigenous People, whilst the other half were the Indigenous

Latin America Intervention
From the literature presented in a course dealing with United States relations with Latin America
during the Cold War, it is interesting that political and cultural intervention in Central America, as an
important and driving social construct, is not a central role in the observations and analyses of the
scholars. While it would make sense that our Western understanding of the concept does not translate
in the same ways in this particular context, it still seems as though studies of the political, economic,
and social situation in the region s various countries would feature this discussion in a more prominent
manner. Noting this discrepancy, this paper includes historiographic works from historians who either

(Insert scholars name ) work on US health intervention in Costa Rica stresses the importance of
connections to the land, noting that these programs are intertwined pre World War II. At the time, (last

the labor needs of agrarian capitalism, and the global hegemony of a style of scientific medicine that

Although not a direct product of Cold War era it is important to remember health aid in the Central
American region. Beginning with Costa Rica in 1914, anti hookworm missions were established in
Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. The Rockefeller Foundation was created as the
international extension of philanthropic work that had originated in the US because, like the West

on a small scale and in a comparatively quiet way...its geographical position and political relations
with the US gave the Board an interest which it felt in no other country. (CITATION) These programs
become as Palmer argues, a vital component of a local strategy and of an institutional matrix designed
to advance social medicine...a node of community of public health professionals with desires and
allegiances that transcend the boundaries of Rockefeller philanthropy the nation and the US empire.

original goal as a catalyst for a centralized state of agency

I saw a male White, later identified as Suspect Marcus David Urena in the seating area of the Fillmore
Metro Station. I immediately recognized Urena from prior police contacts in the field. I conducted a
records check on Urena, through my patrol unit s (#52) computer and learned that he had an
outstanding warrant for his arrest (see attached printout).
I contacted Urena at the above location and advised him of the outstanding warrant. Urena admitted
that he had two glass pipes in his backpack. I handcuffed and arrested Urena for the outstanding
warrant. The handcuffs were double locked.
Incident to arrest, I searched Urena s backpack and found a small black case inside of it. I opened the
black case and found a plastic baggie which contained a crystal substance. I also found two glass pipes
inside of the black container.
Based on my training and experience, I recognized the crystal substance to be crystal
methamphetamine. The glass pipes are commonly used to smoke crystal methamphetamine. I
collected the crystal methamphetamine and glass pipes as evidence. I took photos of the above
evidence (see attached photos). It should be noted that Urena was not under the influence of a

One of the studies I found talked about how men and women...
One of the studies I found talked about how men and women differ in confronting their significant
other about extra partner affairs. The author of this study, Barry X. Khule, had trained undergraduate
students watch and code fifty one episodes of the reality television show Cheaters (Khule, 2011).
Individuals who believed they were being cheated on called the show and asked that the Cheater s
Detective Agency (CDA) follow their significant other around for weeks. Then, the CDA provided the
victim with video surveillance footage to show whether or not their significant other had actually been
cheating on them. The show then gave the victim a chance to confront the cheating mate. The
confrontation was also videotaped as part of the show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Men are believed to have evolved an adaptation for jealousy because if a man s significant other was
unfaithful, it reduced the man s chances of reproducing and passing along his genes to the next
generation. On the other hand, women are believed to have evolved an adaptation for jealousy because
if a woman s significant other was unfaithful, she would lose her source of resources, protection, and
attention (Buss Haselton, 2005).
This article also states that men find it harder to forgive a sexual infidelity and women find it harder to
forgive an emotional infidelity. Evolutionary psychologists believe that women are drawn to men
based on their resources (e.g. money, family, health) and that men are drawn to women based on their
physical appearance (e.g. body shape, size, facial attractiveness). When men feel as though they are in
jeopardy of infidelity, they engage in what the authors of the article call jealous mate guarding ,
especially during their woman s time of ovulation each month. When women feel that their resource
endowed man may be more attracted to another woman, they also engage in jealous mate guarding
(Buss Haselton, 2005). In my opinion, jealousy can be a big problem, but it doesn t have to be. It all
depends on the couple and how compatible they are with each other. A little jealousy can be a good
thing; it means that people care about each other and are afraid to lose one another. However, there is
a point where

Racial Discrimination Throughout The Civil Rights Act Of 1964
I. BACKGROUND:
1. FACTUAL BACKGROUND:
Racial discrimination continues to be a prominent problem in today s society. It has been prohibited
federally since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (title VII). Despite being a law for over 50 years, major
companies continue to have issues with racial discrimination. In fact, the most common type of
discrimination employees report to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is racial
discrimination. The U.S. EEOC enforces all of these laws. EEOC also provides oversight and
coordination of all federal equal employment opportunity regulations, practices, and policies. Racial
discrimination practices that are prohibited include hiring/firing, compensations, classifications,
promotions, layoffs, recruitment, training/apprenticeship programs, and leave decided based on race.
Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination (EEOC).
These racial discrimination practices comes at high cost for society. Large companies like Texaco,
Coca Cola and Merrill Lynch have had to pay millions of dollars to compensate the victims of race
discrimination and to pay for their own responsibility in encouraging or allowing a discriminatory
atmosphere to flourish in the workplace. However, these are the minimal costs because racial
discrimination has much larger implications on society. An important component of a country s
development is the ability for it citizens to collectively contribute, however this is prohibited by
discrimination (Winter). The fact

Examples Of Sexism In Whale Rider

and directed by Niki Caro) is Bullying mainly in the form of sexism. Throughout the film Koro
(Paikea s Grandfather), is sexist towards Paikea (Main Character and Heroine) and children of the
male gender. The theme is relevant to society today because there will always be sexist people
wherever you go. The director (Caro) shows that Koro is sexist by subjecting male and female roles
and making sure that the traditions of the Maori stay the same. Paikea is unable to do the traditional
dance of the Maori or use the Taha because it was considered a Male Role within the tribe and Males

Vietnam Speech On America s Political Interest In Vietnam
The Vietnam War was one of the most comprehensive and horrible wars after the Second World War.
Hundreds of thousands US soldiers were sent to help fight the communists in Vietnam. The US was
driven by Cold War concerns about the spread of communism, particularly by the domino theory the
idea that if one Asian nation fell to the leftist ideology, others would quickly follow. On 1st of June,
1956 John F. Kennedy, at that time a young senator, gave a speech on America s political interest in
Vietnam. In that speech John F. Kennedy tried to persuade the American people to accept and support
America s intervention in Vietnam.
John F. Kennedy was the president of the United States from 1961 to 1963. In his speech America s
stake in Vietnam he used several rhetorical features in order to persuade the American people. He used
two forms of appealing to persuade: pathos and logos. He used pathos when he spoke of Vietnam as
Americas child , which makes the audience feel responsible and caring. Furthermore, he used logos
when he explained what would happen if the US ignores Vietnams need. And if it falls victim to any
of the perils that threaten its existence Communism, political ... Show more content on

Kennedy s speech he said: Vietnam represent a test of American responsibility and determination in
Asia (s. 19, ll. 35 36). It is obviously that he means that America has a responsibility to make sure the
independence of a free Vietnam. The Vietnam War was as mentioned a terrible war, which costed
million of human lives. Moreover, the war left a heavy burden on The US economy. But blood and
money were not the only prices the US had to pay. The My Lai massacre questioned the U.S. claim of
moral superiority and its status of the world defender of freedom and right. In this manner the war
weakened American peoples faith and confidence in their government. In fact, there was a widespread
public distrust of the government, especially in military decisions right after the

Brazil is Latin America s largest renewable energy market notwithstanding flat economic growth as its

The Duke of Ferrara is a character and the speaker in the poem My Last Duchess, by Robert
Browning. The reader witnesses a man that is controlling and whom will destroy anything that he

the first line when he uses the term My which shows ownership (Browning). The Duke cannot control
the Duchess s spot of joy, (Browning line 21) therefore; he commands to have her killed (Browning
line 45). He still feels the need to control the Duchess, even after death. This control is revealed when
he opens the curtain and declares, (since none puts by / The curtain I have drawn for you, but I)

He asks the sages to help him in this conversion by asking them to consume my heart away (Yates line
21). This statement makes the reader believe that the speaker is surrendering to and seeking for a
spiritual rebirth from a divine being. The speaker begins to imagine a time, maybe in the after life,
where he can be preserved. He decides he will preserve himself in unnatural things, such as art when
he says, Once out of nature I shall never take / [m]y bodily form from any natural thing. The speaker
eventually becomes satisfied as he pictures himself in the after life of hammered gold and gold
enameling / To keep a drowsy emperor awake, (Yates lines 28 29) which is immortal. The speaker
goes through a sort of emotional transformation.
The poem The Red Wheelbarrow, by William Williams, can be interpreted in several ways. The first
thing that stands out is that it seems as if every line depends on the next. The way Williams separates
each sentence, makes the reader realize that everyone and everything depends on someone or
something else. For example, if the reader reads line 1 3 he/she would think that so much depends /
upon / a red wheel (Williams lines 1 3). However, after reading the next line barrow (Williams line 4)
one learns that it is a red wheelbarrow that so much depends on. The red wheel depends on the barrow
to be a helpful tool; the wheel would be useless without the

Life Cycle Of Supernova Stars
Our sun is halfway through its life cycle and based on the studies of the stars, when it reaches the last
stages of its life it will go supernova destroying Earth, but that won t happen in about 5 billion years.
Supernovas are the explosion of a star when it reaches the end of its life. There are two ways a star can
go supernova. The first way or a Type I supernova occurs in the Binary system which is when two
stars orbit the same point. The two stars are a white dwarf and a red giant. A white dwarf is a small
dense star that is around the size of a planet and a red giant is a star at its last stages of life. If these
two stars are close enough, matter will be transferred to the white dwarf from the red giant. When the
star s core reaches its limit of matter, a thermonuclear detonation will occur leaving nothing behind
unless there were leftover elements in the white dwarf or there were elements made in the supernova
explosion. One of the elements made in the explosion is radioactive nickel. ... Show more content on

Nuclear fusion is an atomic reaction where atoms combine to form a bigger atom with less mass. The
most common nuclear fusion is when hydrogen nuclei forms helium nuclei. This occurs in stars that
are small such as our sun. When there is low amount in nuclear fuel a star then turns into a red giant as
its core grows smaller, denser, and hotter. Our sun will eventually turn into a red giant, theoretically
vaporizing Earth. Once the core has nothing to fuse but iron, it will immediately begin the final phase.
The temperature in the core rises over 100 billion degrees and then the star explodes. After a
supernova, all that s left of the star is a small, dense core called a neutron star. Also after the
explosion, a black hole

Patients With Newly Diagnosed Hypothyroidism And Their...
Patient education. FNP needs to educate patients with newly diagnosed hypothyroidism and their
caregiver if necessary in regards to its disease process, side effect of medications, importance of
compliance and follow up. Hypothyroidism is often a lifelong condition and therefore it is important
to counsel the patient at the point of diagnosis (Roe, 2015). Taking L thyroxine is the main treatment
mechanism; therefore, medication compliance is the one of the most important part in education. The
clinical effect of L thyroxine may include normalizing abnormalities associated with hypothyroidism.
Optimal treatment of hypothyroidism may lead to improvement of various symptoms. In
neuropsychological aspect, patients may show improved motor skills, myopathy and depression. With
treatment, patient s overall energy level may enhance constipation symptoms may improve and weight
problem may lessen if thyroid balance was a main contributor. It has been shown that treatment of
hypothyroidism would also improve lipid profiles in patients (Roe, 2015).
Longstanding hypothyroidism is accompanied by impaired function of nearly all organs and tissues,
and the clinical response to replacement therapy may continue for months. Normally, L thyroxine
administration improves clinical symptoms associated with hypothyroidism without adverse effects.
Rare cases of intolerance which may be caused by reaction to tablet colors or other constituents have

Greek Creation Vs Celtic Creation
In many ways the Greek creation and the Celtic creation are different. They re both different cultures,
they worship different gods, they re from different time periods. But in both stories of creation, there
is a violent overthrow that leads to the death of the previous ruler and the birth of new gods and
things.
First in these stories is the way new rulers begin their reign. In the Greek creation story, Cronus hid in
his mother s shadow until night fell and Uranus came to the sky on Earth. When Uranus was resting
Cronus sprang out of hiding and killed his father and became ruler. It is similar in Celtic creation as
well. Donn and Danu were so in love that they locked into a loving embrace and never separated.

What Happened To Rosemary In The Giver

How Ketchum Is A Small Town Of Northeast Oklahoma That Has...
Ketchum is a small town in northeast Oklahoma that has a present day population of 450 residents.
Ketchum first became a town in 1899 and was named after a Delaware tribe member named James
Ketchum. The town was originally located in the northeast part of Mayes County, close to James and
his wife Elisabeth s home. However, in 1912 once the Kansas, Oklahoma Gulf Railroad was expanded
from Kansas to Texas the town was relocated. Residents moved the town site to the southeastern part
of Craig County sandwiched between Mayes County and Delaware County to be near the railroad.
In 1803 part of the land that would someday become Ketchum was a small portion of the land that was
acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. This land was unsettled and deemed only suitable for Indian

the Mississippi were forced to move to the Indian Territory. Once the tribes arrived in Indian Territory
they began to rebuild. The struggles to rebuild lasted many years and some tribes never flourish as

Letter To Victor Frankenstein
Dearest brother, I hope my letter reaches you in time. It has been a few weeks since I last heard back
from you, and I understand the cause of your troubles. Upon reading your letters concerning your
visitor s life, I was also originally in a state of disbelief. The details of his tale were so implausible that
I dared not even consider them as fact. However, upon reading your tales and conceiving the vigor
with which you wrote it, it became increasingly believable. This caused me to further evaluate the
character of this man you claimed as your closest friend, this Victor Frankenstein.
While his tales seemed to be fictitious, your account of the evil being that boarded the ship to view his
lifeless body have caused me to reconsider. However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From my best reasoning, this foreigner, in his strange form, was truly an angel Our Heavenly Father
has sent to you. In an attempt to prevent you from giving way to the desires that have so consumed
your thoughts for this time that you have left, this messenger s purpose to sway you to reconsider your
costly journey. Why else would God permit him to live until his tale reached its completion? Your men
themselves were begging you to free them from this obsession. Brother, I beg of you to choose the
natural affection of your family and loved ones rather than continue to pursue your fascination.
These two signs alone would be enough to cause any sane man to leave this preoccupation alone and
return to the love that only one s family could provide. Dearest brother, it warms my heart to learn that
you and your men plan to return home to London. This expedition did not have the favor of Our
Guiding Savior and without it, your journey was doomed to fail. It is by God s favor alone that he has
provided both of these opportunities for you to make the right decision. Please, I beg of you, if you

Blaise Pascal Fideism
In questioning the existence of God, the ideology of fideism is used to in support the existence of God
with the use of faith. Opposed to other various views, fideism relies on the use of faith and/or
revelation rather than depending single handedly on reason alone. Blaise Pascal is a French
philosopher that approaches the doctrine and beliefs of fideism using his wager argument to confirm
the concept that there is a monotheistic God in existence (269).
Pascal s ideology revolves around the wins and loses of betting. He states that if we do believe in a
God than our chances at happiness are achievable. He adds on saying, under the circumstance that we
do believe in a God, but He does not exist, then there is no much to lose in the end. Although, if we do
not believe that a god exists then they is all the much more to lose and happiness is not achievable.
This essentially means that believing in a God is better than not believing in God at all.
Going into further detail, Pascal begins his argument by explaining that If there is a God, he is
infinitely beyond our comprehension, since having neither parts nor limits, he bears no relation to
ourselves (323). This brings up the question of whether or not humans are able to decide if God is real.
He states that we are stuck between two decisions, two choices, or two infinities. These decisions of
infinities being God existing or God not existing. Pascal mentions that reason alone cannot help us
gravitate towards one decision

The Negative Effects Of Illegal Immigration
Immigration, by definition, is the term used to describe the action of coming to live in a foreign
country permanently. Illegal immigration however, is the action of crossing, or overstaying, in a place
that isn t one s native home, without guaranteed residence. For years, people have immigrated left and
right due to various reasons and certain said opportunities. It wasn t until the 1800 s, when the number
of immigrants in the United States skyrocketed, that continuous debates about whether illegal
immigration is an issue or not erupted. With it came multiple solutions to the overall problem;
immigrating to the United States from other countries takes too long due to the current immigration
policy. This is a nation known topic because it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the system cheating aspiring immigrants, alongside the commotion of having immigrants
settle here will immediately reduce the nation s GDP (Griswald 1). Not to mention, the economy in
the country is actually searching and has a great demand for these kind of workers.
Two solutions to fixing the issues with the current immigration system is to primarily provide
temporary legal visas and open up a pathway to obtaining citizenship. Many undocumented
immigrants have lived in the United States for at least a decade and have become a great part of
American society. The prevalent system practically encourages immigrants to enter the country
illegally, considering the process of rightfully becoming a citizen can take up to five or more years.
According to Brad Plumer s article, Learning from Failure: How to Solve Illegal Immigration,
providing temporary legal visas is the first step to fixing the matter with immigration. Allowing people
to obtain a temporary work permit, or visa, makes sure immigrant workers ... fulfill the needs of U.S.
businesses (Plumer 1). Not only does this reduce illegal crossings, but fills the necessary jobs our
economy demands and needs since many Americans refuse to do so. This is a solution because
immigrants now may no longer have the motive to avoid the system and businesses will reduce illegal
hirings due to easy acquired visas. Also, the United States can

order to examine how genre and narrative is established in two crime films, we conducted a close

Criminal behaviour has been so constant in movies that are the following genre of a greater
understanding of crime in film: thriller, action, suspense, mystery, detective, prison, film noir and the
most modern heist. The crime genre started with one main sub genre, and that was the gangsta genre.
The crime genre appeals to a mainstream and diverse audiences because of all the elements of the
film. Firstly, the action elements of the films which include shoot outs and car chases appeal to the
mainstream audience. The action sequence are very important to the mainstream audience as they
want to see the spectacle .Secondly, the A list actors, who are attracted to the crime genre, make
certain people go want the movie for the star. Thirdly, the crime genre appeals to the diverse audience

Importance Of Fair Trade Movement
Trade is the act of buying and selling goods and services. This idea of trade became popular globally,
starting the fair trade movement. According to FINE in 2001, fair trade is defined as a trading
partnership, based on dialogue, transparency, and respect that seeks greater equity in international
trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing
the rights of, marginalized producers and workers especially in the South (Moore, Wilkinson, Redfern
Snedker). The fair trade movement originated in the late nineteenth century. It began as charitable
organizations and political solidarity trading with poor communities in the 1940s until it expanded to
become a movement in the 1960s 1970s. The movement was officially created when the leading
traders and importers joined forces from multiple different countries. The movement was created to to
import goods for trade. Fair trade organizations (backed by consumers) are engaged actively in
supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of
conventional international trade (Moore 73 74). The importance of the fair trade movement can be
explained by the foundation of the movement, the goals of the movement, the obstacles of the
movement, current organizations who follow the movement, and the overall movement itself. To
begin, the fair trade movement can be understood by its organizations being divided into four groups

Analysis of Japanese Business Culture
Along with recent globalization, the business market is now diffused everywhere in the world.
Consequently, mega competition and international co operation are promoted simultaneously in the
field of business. Under this circumstance, learning and understanding the business culture each
country has is important to succeed in global business. As business culture is indivisible from a
country s cultural uniqueness, American style business is formed in the United States, and British style
business is adopted in England. Equally, Japan has developed its own unique business culture which
has been practiced for a long time. This essay will analyze the characteristic Japanese business culture

For instance, in order to shift from a totally unknown relationship to a familiar relationship, most
Japanese salesman tend to have many short visits with an exchange of only few words, without talking
about their products and services. It is important for Japanese businessmen to create intimacy with
clients in an indirect way. Moreover, after the familiarity relationship is established, it is necessary to
maintain this relationship by bringing gifts on every visit, sending special summer gift (chugen) and
year end gift (seibo), and exchanging the massive cards, such as summer cards, new year s cards and
sympathy cards. Japanese business deals depend largely on the personal acquaintance rather than the
profit arithmetic.
As described previously, there are some unique customs in
Japanese style business. However, the characteristic of Japanese business culture which is even now
ingrained has come under criticism.
Clark, Professor of Economics at University of California argued that
Japanese society was an anachronism that did not lose its ancient tribal character until quite recently,
for which reason the Japanese people have been able to maintain their groupistic value orientation up
to the present. (Okada, 1984) Actually, Japanese companies which consistently observe their
traditional business practices are now under intense pressure to meet international management
standards. It is pointed out that the Japanese business culture has some

Walmart to try to be the predominant seller of pretty much everything you buy. Each one is trying to

nearly every major industry, benefiting the biggest and best run organizations, to the detriment of
upstarts and second fiddle players.
In the accelerated churning of today s capitalism, changing tastes and expanding choices destroy some
jobs and create others, with net gains in price and quality. But disruption is never restful, and America
now faces a decision unique in its history: Is it tired tired of the turmoil of creative destruction? If so,
it had better be ready to do without creativity. And ready to stop being what it has always been:
restless.
Americans just now are being plied with promises that the political class can, and is eager to, protect

We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas,

She was standing before these people she s never been around before, and there are people she s only

The belief of a greater perfect being is what brings forth this argument. This idea is seen in most

In Part II: The Private Investigator of The Longman Anthology of Detective Fiction it says, The

The Pros And Cons Of Military Technology
Conclusion
It is common knowledge within the tech community that some commercial technology lags at least a
decade behind new military technology. The lag time will allow for an adjustment period to help
facilitate the acceptance from the public on a mass scale.
The merging does not have to be at the extremes of what is demonstrated on television shows such as
Star Trek, and there will be those who stand against the changes due to religious and philosophical
beliefs. Nevertheless, those who embrace the newfound world will outnumber those who do not. Just
as people rush to get the newest iPhone or tech gadget, they will slowly integrate new hybrid
technology into their lives. It will be only a matter of time until all humans assimilate into a future
where man and machine co exist as one organism thus breaking the biological barriers that have
constrained human evolution thus far. A.I Summoning the Demon illustrates the consequences of
creating advanced artificially intelligent machines and discusses possible solutions to the problem.
The importance of regulations is discussed along with the need for the human race to become a hybrid
species. These solutions together will ensure the longevity of the human species well into the next
millennium.

who voted for categorizing objects according to three levels: item, pattern and structural levels. She
categorized art objects according to their types, geographical origin, functions, means of acquisition,

Noel Carroll Satire
What fuels the desire of wanting to go watch a horror film? As a society, naturally, we do not want to
be afraid of the supernatural or even live in a haunted house (perhaps some people do, on the rare
occasion) but why would we want to go watch something that makes it difficult for us to sleep at
night? What drives us out of our way to be scared, indulged in the gory, disfigured monsters?
Normally, we would avoid a scenario to be attacked by a monster or as Carroll pinpointed, attempt to
add some pleasure to a boring afternoon by opening the lid of a steamy trash can in order to savor its
unwholesome stew of broken bits of meat... unrecognizable clumps, riven thoroughly by all manner of
crawling things. (Carroll 2) Analyzing and contrasting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The old tendency to dismiss the Hollywood cinema as escapist always defined escape merely
negatively as escape from, but escape logically must also be escape to. (Wood 30) A dream does not
necessarily have to be good or bad, but it is an escape from reality, no matter what form it s presented
in. Reality can seem dull and audiences who choose to go watch a horror movie tend to watch it for
controlling the idea of the repressed, things that cannot be controlled by the conscious mind. The idea
can be represented from outside or inside of the community and then annihilated, further emphasizing
the idea of otherness . The 1920 film can be depicting Europe in the 1920s with the great depression,

something that humanity was trying to beat/ get rid of. The definition of normality in horror films is in
general boringly constant... The Monster is... changing from period to period as society s basic fears
clothe themselves in fashionable or immediately accessible garments rather as dreams use material
from recent memory to express conflicts or desires that may go back to early childhood. (Wood 31)
Although Nosferatu, especially for the present day, is not necessarily scary in the sense that it makes
you jump out of your seat, the idea of a bloodsucking monster becomes

Red Scare, KKK, Civil War Brought Fear to America
Fear The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is
fear of the unknown. H. P. Lovecraft. In the 1900 s, fear drove America. The Red Scare was a time
when Americans were afraid of the threat of Communism. In the Sacco and Vanzetti case, two Italian
anarchists were convicted of crimes which they were clearly innocent of. The Ku Klux Klan attempted
to keep African Americans out of positions of power and for brief time was successful. The Red Scare,
Sacco Vanzetti case and the rise of the KKK all are example of how American s fear the unknown and
what we don t understand.
After Red Scare is the term the fear of Communism in America held in the 1900 s. Following World
War I, The Soviet Union, led by Joseph Stalin, began taking over countries and putting in Communist
governments. To make fear worse the Czechoslovakia was taken over by by the soviet union having
spy s inside the Czechoslovakian government as high ranking officials. This put the fear of God in
Americans because we didn t know who could have been a Communist spy sent here by Russia
destroy America. Few periods in American history have been so dramatic, so fraught with mystery or
so brothing with fear and hysteria as were the days of the great Red Scare. (Robert K. Murray). Also
we saw a rash of accusations by man named Joseph Mccarthy used his tactic of Mccarthyism to
accuse many innocent Americans of being Communist.
The KKK is a terrorist

  • 2. Erich Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front Essay Erich Remarque s All Quiet on the Western Front I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow. I see how peoples are set against one another, and in silence, unknowingly, foolishly, obediently, innocently slay one another (263). Powerful changes result from horrifying experiences. Paul Baumer, the protagonists of Erich Remarque s All Quiet on the Western Front utters these words signifying the loss of his humanity and the reduction to a numbed creature, devoid of emotion. Paul s character originates in the novel as a young adult, out for an adventure, and eager to serve his country. He never realizes the terrible pressures that war ... Paul treats his lingual freedom as privilege that soldiers have, and shows the benefits of living a soldier s life. He refers to the front as if it were a paradise, for he can use vulgar language and not worry about manners and decorum. He treats his service as a time for relaxation, recreation, and a little excitement. This attitude becomes short lived as the realities of war sink in. When Paul volunteers for reconnaissance one night, he becomes stranded in No Man s Land (the area between opposing trenches) and begins to realize the brutality of war and starts to lose his own humanity. At the beginning of the book, Paul shows care towards his fellow soldiers and treats his service as an adventure by his education of the recruits and his excitement towards the boundaries of his vocabulary. When Paul becomes stranded in No Man s Land, he undergoes the transformation from a carefree young adult to an inhumane, lifeless shell of a man. The change begins when Paul hides in a shell hole, waiting for a pause in the bombardment. A French soldier jumps in as well, looking for shelter. Paul has prepared for this circumstance and stabs him three times. Paul s strikes are not mortal enough, for the wounds do not immediately kill the Frenchman. This kind of injection needs to use large number of syringe needles, and according to [62],clients reported that an average of 8.7% of injections employed shared syringe needles. Data from the Coalition for safe Community Needle Disposal showed that in the year of 2011, 13.5 million people in the United States produced 7.8 billion used sharps(needles, syringes, etc.) outside the traditional healthcare, and 1 million to 1.5 million of needles were used for illegal drug injections. Since blood borne infections, like HIV, HBV, and HCV, can be commonly spread by sharing intravenous syringes, huge number of substandard and illegal use of needles compares to share rate of 8.7%, the potential spread of these infections cannot be ignored. Meanwhile, on the other side, the application of micro needle can to large extent avoid this from its source. Micro needles, which are recently developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) [63, 64], are small patches that can be administered by untrained users. However, the lecture that got me into deep thoughts was on Indigenous People and the Media. I kept asking myself; why do we view people that way? Why is it we change impressions when it s a different race to ours? Now thinking back, I ve come to realise that media has a big influence to our everyday lives. Indigenous Australians in media are not highly recognised for positive news. The way the media interprets sources of information about the Indigenous Peoples has change the views on what we think of them. Mainstream media tends to focus on the negative side about Indigenous Peoples like the problems and the relationship between the Indigenous Peoples and the public (McCallum, Waller, 2013). Educational systems are the same, as the students learn more on the negative history of the Indigenous Peoples instead of the contemporary arts and performances of Aboriginal history. This leads to the view of many Indigenous children feeling outcast as people stereotype on their race when they don t (Salote Bovoro, 2008, citied in Korff, 2016). We cannot deny that everyone stereotypes, including myself but I have become more aware that I should think before I do or say something. I was taught in previous years that I should ask myself, what if someone said that to you, how would you feel? That s the same with Indigenous Peoples, they don t want to be treated that way because yes, everyone is different, but we don t need to point it out and criticise about it. RACISM/DISCRIMINATION As the unit is about Indigenous Peoples, people thinks that this is the most sensitive topic as people tend to think before they say something, unlike how they describe people who are the same as them. Individuals who believed they were being cheated on called the show and asked that the Cheater s Detective Agency (CDA) follow their significant other around for weeks. Men are believed to have evolved an adaptation for jealousy because if a man s significant other was unfaithful, it reduced the man s chances of reproducing and passing along his genes to the next generation. On the other hand, women are believed to have evolved an adaptation for jealousy because if a woman s significant other was unfaithful, she would lose her source of resources, protection, and attention (Buss Haselton, 2005). This article also states that men find it harder to forgive a sexual infidelity and women find it harder to forgive an emotional infidelity. Evolutionary psychologists believe that women are drawn to men based on their resources (e.g. money, family, health) and that men are drawn to women based on their physical appearance (e.g. body shape, size, facial attractiveness). When men feel as though they are in jeopardy of infidelity, they engage in what the authors of the article call jealous mate guarding , especially during their woman s time of ovulation each month. When women feel that their resource endowed man may be more attracted to another woman, they also engage in jealous mate guarding (Buss Haselton, 2005). In my opinion, jealousy can be a big problem, but it doesn t have to be. It all depends on the couple and how compatible they are with each other. A little jealousy can be a good thing; it means that people care about each other and are afraid to lose one another. However, there is a point where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It has been prohibited federally since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (title VII). Despite being a law for over 50 years, major companies continue to have issues with racial discrimination. In fact, the most common type of discrimination employees report to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is racial discrimination. The U.S. EEOC enforces all of these laws. EEOC also provides oversight and coordination of all federal equal employment opportunity regulations, practices, and policies. Racial discrimination practices that are prohibited include hiring/firing, compensations, classifications, promotions, layoffs, recruitment, training/apprenticeship programs, and leave decided based on race. Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination (EEOC). These racial discrimination practices comes at high cost for society. Large companies like Texaco, Coca Cola and Merrill Lynch have had to pay millions of dollars to compensate the victims of race discrimination and to pay for their own responsibility in encouraging or allowing a discriminatory atmosphere to flourish in the workplace. However, these are the minimal costs because racial discrimination has much larger implications on society. An important component of a country s development is the ability for it citizens to collectively contribute, however this is prohibited by discrimination (Winter). The fact ... Life Cycle Of Supernova Stars Our sun is halfway through its life cycle and based on the studies of the stars, when it reaches the last stages of its life it will go supernova destroying Earth, but that won t happen in about 5 billion years. Supernovas are the explosion of a star when it reaches the end of its life. There are two ways a star can go supernova. The first way or a Type I supernova occurs in the Binary system which is when two stars orbit the same point. The two stars are a white dwarf and a red giant. A white dwarf is a small dense star that is around the size of a planet and a red giant is a star at its last stages of life. If these two stars are close enough, matter will be transferred to the white dwarf from the red giant. Blaise Pascal is a French philosopher that approaches the doctrine and beliefs of fideism using his wager argument to confirm the concept that there is a monotheistic God in existence (269). Pascal s ideology revolves around the wins and loses of betting. He states that if we do believe in a God than our chances at happiness are achievable. He adds on saying, under the circumstance that we do believe in a God, but He does not exist, then there is no much to lose in the end. Although, if we do not believe that a god exists then they is all the much more to lose and happiness is not achievable. This essentially means that believing in a God is better than not believing in God at all. Going into further detail, Pascal begins his argument by explaining that If there is a God, he is infinitely beyond our comprehension, since having neither parts nor limits, he bears no relation to ourselves (323). This brings up the question of whether or not humans are able to decide if God is real. He states that we are stuck between two decisions, two choices, or two infinities. These decisions of infinities being God existing or God not existing. Pascal mentions that reason alone cannot help us gravitate towards one decision ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
