A Pro Versus Con Argumentative Article Essay
In America we currently have tax placed on our gas. However, with new changes in the
automotive industry, there have been ideas of changing the tax to a tax based on miles travelled
rather than gas. Mr. Earl Blumenauer and Mr. Phil Byrd both expressed their strong views on the
topic in a pro versus con argumentative article. Blumenauer and Byrd both built up their credibility
by using strong sources, including facts and statistics, and appealing to the readers emotions;
however towards the end of the article both sides had a slight flaw which weakened their credibility.
When analyzing both viewpoints of the topic, the credibility of the sources and appeals to ethos in
the article are very important. The pro side of the article was written by Earl Blumenauer, a
sponsor for the Road Usage Fee Pilot Program Act. After looking further into his profession, he
works as a congressman for Oregon. Since he is only a sponsor for the program, there are
unanswered questions as to if he is knowledgeable enough on the subject of these types of taxes.
After further reading you learn that he actually used his job as a representative to introduce the
Pilot Programming Act to congress. The program is taking place in Oregon, where they are
beginning projects in hope of switching over to a tax on miles travelled rather than gas. Whereas,
the con side was written by Phil Byrd, the chairman for the American Trucking Association and the
president of Bulldog Hiway Express. He seems like the more

Strategic Human Resource Management Practices
STRATEGIC HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT:
Strategic human resource is a technique allowing business to manage their human resources by
giving entity the imperative structure to achieve future objectives and aims. Focusing on continual
issues relating to employees, values, structure, culture, commitment and maintaining resources in an
organisation. It is also defined as the direction and scope of organization over longer term, which
ideally matches its resources to its changing environment, and in particular, to its markets,
customers and clients to meet stakeholder expectations. (Johnson, G and Scholes, K 1993.

Model Three Stages Of Kurt Lewin s Theory
The Model three stages Unfreeze, Change and Refreeze which was explained by Lewin by
changing the shape of a block of ice. He explained that if one have large cube of ice but realised
after some time that he wants a cone of ice, what to do? First, melt the ice so that is become easier
to change Unfreeze. The second step shape the iced water into the want form Changeand finally
freeze to the new form Refreeze. It is likely to take these phases to entirely complex levels yet I
don t trust this is important to have the capacity to work with the theory. Be that as it may, know
that the hypothesis has been condemned for being excessively simplified.
The method has changed a lot since the theory was initially introduced in 1947, however the Kurt
Lewin model is still to a great degree important. Many new models are actually based on Kurt
Lewin model.
The first stage which is the unfreezing one, is the most vital to recognise the change happening

This indicates that it does not serve to define the objective of planned change in group
performance as the reaching of a different level. Permanency of the new level, or permanency for a
desired period, should be included in the objective.
Lewin s concern is about emphasising the change and make sure that the desired change is
established and continued into the future. By not doing this, might force people to go back while
doing what they are used to.
Since, the Lewin s model has a definite end; I don t think that this would be adopted for Casela
World of Adventures as there are still lots of changes to come and in high speed. This model
would rather be used to set up change management for people/organisation where it is quite easy to
understand by ensuring that all stages are extended to help for better

Destiny, Fate, Free Will and Free Choice in Oedipus the...
The Fate of Oedipus in Oedipus the King
In Oedipus the King there comes a point in the play where Oedipus
learns something that plays an important role throughout the play. He
learns from a oracle that he will eventually kill his own Father and sleep
with his own mother. As one could imagine this is a shock to Oedipus, and
he does not believe the oracle. However, he cannot prevent any of this
from happening because it is his fate. Oedipus is a victim of circumstances
beyond his control, his life had already been planned by the Greek Gods.
Throughout the whole play there are references made to many of the
ancient Greek Gods, for example, Apollo, Zeus, Dionysis, and Artemis... Show more content on

He had no way to control what his parents did to him after he was born.
Then, eighteen years later, he leaves Corinth for Delphi, to check on his
parentage at the oracle of Apollo. The oracle, though, gives him a
horrific prediction. Which is that he will kill his father and sleep with
his mother, which are the two most inconceivable crime in a Greek family.
After hearing this he flees Corinth and heads toward Thebes believing to of
left his father behind in case the oracle was right.
However, the god Apollo has somewhat tricked him. Since he
believes that his real father is Polybus, but he does not yet know that his
father is the King of Thebes, which is where he is going. Along the way he
meets an old man driving a wagon of slaves at a place where three roads
meet, and he then precedes to kill him.
Years pass after this incident, during which time he becomes King
of Thebes, marries Jocasta (his mother), and fathers four children by her.
Slowly, Thebes becomes engulfed by a horrific plague, which kills animals,
children, and crops. Oedipus, being the brave king he is, promises to save
his city. Since plagues are caused by pollution, and the pollution is
caused by sins the gods are the only one s who can reveal it s cause.

Nonspecific Immune Response Analysis
LO 2.28 I understand how to use representations or models to analyze quantitatively and
qualitatively the effects of disruptions to dynamic homeostasis in biological systems. Both models
and representations may be used to show the effects of changes in homeostasis. The main ways to
achieve homeostasis is through positive and negative feedbackand disruptions can be viewed easily
through models or representations. (Campbell 644 645, 650 652)
LO 2.29 I understand how create representations and models to describe immune responses.
There are two main types of immune responses; primary and secondary. Primary is the first time
a response occurs in the presence of an antigen while secondary refers to a response after the
initial. Both may be modeled by showing examples of an antigen and the respective secondary
/primary response. (Campbell 719 720)
LO 2.30 I understand how to create representations or models to describe nonspecific immune
defenses in plants and animals. Animals and plants have some sort of immune response that protect
the organism from infection and that does not target any specific pathogen. Representations or

Cell death is an essential part of a cell s life cycle in the three given situations. Apoptosis, a type
of programmed cell death, may be used as an example why death is useful. In development and
differentiation, it may be used to replace old cells that are either no longer functional/efficient or
no longer needed. For reusing molecules, cells may die so that the molecules within are released
and they may be used again. Finally, dynamic homeostasis uses cell death to either promote the
production of substance that is needed or as a means of negative feedback. (Campbell 313 315,

The Song Of The Yami Analysis
SONG OF THE ANCESTORS The Song is considered the absolute law of the Yami with no
room for gray areas or interpretation and their myths, unlike in western culture where the word
myth is understood as false, are considered as the only real truths and never to be questioned. It
holds all the taboos, rituals, and social reasoning of the Yami, and the history of the family
reciting until present time. This genealogy component of the song is why each family has their
own version of creation in the Song. However, the Yami are also aware of the different variations
of the events in their stories, and some narrators even acknowledge these differences within the
telling of their own telling (themes cp 4). The main purpose of the narrative is to reinforce the
listeners knowledge of their descent, which includes the territorial rights of their lineage and
precise information on land, water, and pasture ownership...The correct succession of personal
names as related to the names of settlements and fields is more important than what happened to
the bearers of the names themselves (lim of nar sec cp6) Certain ancestral themes in the Song are
heritage of the various villages, but they can be shared by the Yami and storytellers may mix the
themes freely.(thems, cp 4) The Song and Ecological Conservation In current days, in the face of

The American Dream Is A Mere Fantasy For The Poor Essay
The American Dream is an idea that needs no introduction: it has been embedded into our minds
since elementary school by our history textbooks, teachers, and parents. It s an unwritten rule for
many adults keep the American Dream alive in our next generation. And why shouldn t we? With
all of the countless rags to riches stories bred through our county s proud history, the American
Dream becomes self evident. America truly is the land of opportunity; so why are most of our
povertystricken citizens stuck at the bottom? Has the dream become a mere fantasy for the poor?
One may say that it is possible for almost all poor Americans to climb the social hierarchy, but
they unwilling to put in the effort necessary. While I do concede that it may be possible to climb
the social ladder, I d argue that the negative affect poverty has on work and mental health rig the
system so that the opportunity simply does not exist for the poor.
Don t get me wrong, the dream is not dead for the poor. There must be a few exceptions to the
rule. A Pew study finds that four percent of people born into poverty work their way up into the
higher classes. Four is not too terrible; the ratio isn t flattering, but some are still achieving the
American Dream. A more unfortunate number is 70 the percent of men and women born, raised,
and perished in poverty (see fig. 1). The overwhelming majority of those born into low income
houses will statistically never escape. Poverty isn t just a problem; it is

Distinc Mise En Scene Analysis
This particular scene shows two types of proxemics distances, social distance and impersonal
business/casual social gatherings distance. Although this is a long shot, you can see the difference
between the two groups of boys based off of how close they stand to each other. The two teams of
boys are standing with each other at a social distance; they are friends and if they reached out their
arms they could easily touch one another. Both teams are standing close enough to engage in two
way communication, but they are by no means friendly with each other. The distances give off the
emotional impact that these teams are against one another. This scene from The Longest Yard also
shows how proxemics distances can give a clue to the relationships amongst people. In this frame,
the convicts football teamis cheering and chanting together the night before their big game against
the guards. The personal distance between all of the team members at this time shows how they
have such a strong relationship. At this moment, the team goes to break the personal space barriers
because they have such a strong sense of comradery and unity as a team. This frame shows that the
team has come a long way from when they first started.

Published by Naughty Dog in 2016, this game won many awards and has recorded as the fastest

The game is a sequel from the Uncharted series that telling about the adventure of two brothers

The idea of this 50 GB size game is very simple and straightforward. There is no customization
needed since everything is provided by the system. The game gives no limitation of time and
how many a player can do errors, which gives me a frustrating yet fun experience because I have to
go through a set of trials and errors before I can succeed certain level.
The educational value of this game, in my opinion is on the way the game can relate a real life
problem solving characteristics into a realistic graphic. Players are not presented with a superhero
with unrealistic capabilities, but they will see a fictional human like character that has limitation
and weaknesses. The sophisticated graphics technology and the easy to follow storyline are the
strongest part of this game because it provides player with an atmosphere where he can immerse
himself into the situation. And since the game is a first person role play game, there are no rules to
memorize. Player use his common knowledge to engage into the game.
This game has all the requirements of a motivating game. It has a clear instruction, goal, challenge,
control and the pleasantly frustrating element (Asgari Kaufman, 2009). The immersion of this

Rights And Responsibilities Of U.s. Citizens
Rights and Responsibilities of U.S. Citizens
Become a citizen of one of the best nations in the world is a privilege that not many people have. I
m talking about the United States of America. If you are an U.S natural born citizen you have
rights and responsibilities that protect you based on the Declaration of Independence and the U.S
Constitution. People who are in the position to become U.S. citizens gain the same rights,
privileges, and responsibilities of citizenship as natural born American with the only restriction that
they can t be eligible for President of the United States.
The United States Constitution protects the rights of every U.S. citizen from every background,
culture or religion. Here are some of the rights and responsibilities that every citizen should exercise
and respect to ensures that America continues to be a free and prosperous nation.
Before I start describing some of the rights and responsibilities it s important to talk about the
difference between these two. Rights are what protect you as individual in a society, things that the
government has established for good in benefit of the citizens written on the Constitution and
responsibilities is what makes you morally or ethically accountable in society, in other words
rights are given to you from the government as a form of privilege and responsibilities is how you
repay or give in return for those rights given to you.

Literary Analysis Of A Farewell To Arms
Haunting yet passionate, A Farewell to Arms allows readers to perceive the story from a soldier
s point of view. Hemingway depicts the harsh war with sensory but blunt details. His expression
of words has an emotional appeal on the reader, allowing his or her to put themselves in the shoes
of any character. For example, on page 73 Hemingway writes, There was sunlight coming through
the shutters. I saw the big armoire, the bare walls, and two chairs. My legs in dirty bandages, stuck
straight out of the bed. Hemingway fully describes what is seen and this permits his audience to
have a full picture in their mind.
Hemingway includes important quotes throughout the novel. On page 26, Miss Barkley starts,
You did say you loved me, didn t you? and Henry replies, Yes, I lied, I loveyou. I had not said it
before. Later, she brings up the rotten game they play as their affection isn t completely real.
The men at the mess begin to talk about protesting war on page 61, You are a foreigner. You are a
patriot. And the ones who would not make war? Can they stop it? I don t know. They speak of this
earlier in the book (page 43) as well but they can never fully understand how war starts or ends. On
page 99, Henry and Barkley speak of their love, I only wanted it for you. There isn t a me. I m you.
Don t make up a separate me. Another quote on page 200, Henry explains that he is over his
obligation of being a part of the army by saying, Anger was washed away in

Correlations were performed (refer to appendix 1 and 2) and it was found that income and
education were significantly correlated as the countrywide data had a significance value of .003, r
= .637, p .005 and the statewide data had a remarkable significance value of .000, r = .770, p .005.
Despite these very strong correlations, no significant results were found for any of the other
variables and more importantly that support the predicted relationship between job engagement,
education and job satisfaction. However, no relationship was predicted between income and job
satisfaction so this prediction is supported by the data.
To further investigate the relationship between the variables regressions were conducted (refer to...

However, when job engagement was accounted for both the variables become more insignificant.
The graph of the worldwide data (refer to Figure 1) highlights that as job satisfaction increases, so
to does income roughly, however, the data does deviate from this pattern slightly for some of the
countries. Job engagement also appears to follow a similar pattern, with less satisfied countries
having less job engagement, however, as engagement increases there seems to be less variation
between countries. Education does not seem to have any strong effects displayed in the graph as
the data falls and rises throughout the graph.
The relationship between the variables is less pronounced for the US (refer to Figure 2) as there
does not seem to be a strong relationship between any of the variables. Income and education
follow a similar trend to the countrywide data, both slightly increasing with job satisfaction. Job
engagement surprisingly appears to be decreasing with satisfaction for the US data as the values get
slightly lower. Job engagement and education also appear to interact, eventually converging to a
similar point.
Discussion
It was hypothesized that job engagement and education would significantly influence job
satisfaction and that income would have

`` The Lesson `` By Tony Cade Bambara
If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it too? Throughout the ages, how many
times have parents bellowed these words? Although the question is dreadfully annoying to most
children, it is designed to make them think about their individuality and the dangers of
conforming. Today, more than ever, with the use of social media, our society is under pressure
to conform. With the creation of Facebook and Twitter, our goals are to be friended, liked,
followed, and accepted. Is our nation in danger of becoming lemmings? According to an entry in
Urban Dictionary written by Aegis Kleais, a lemming is [a] derogatory term used to reference a
person who seemingly does not possess any form of individual thought and instead mindlessly
follows the behaviors and actions of the masses. Fortunately, short stories such as Tony Cade
Bambara s The Lesson (1972) and Langston Hughes Salvation (1940) remind us of both the
positive and negative effects of how an individual deals with group conformityand social pressure.
The Lesson is a story of a close knit group of children from impoverished Harlem, New York who
are taken on a field trip to learn about economic inequality. In Salvation, Hughes recalls his
experience of religion as a young child, particularly an intense religious revival. Through the use of
setting, characterization, and irony, both authors show the importance of standing up for one s self
regardless of social pressure. In each

The first battle of the Persian War, the Battle of Marathon, took place in 490 BC. King Darius sent
troops to Greece which stopped at each Greek island along the way demanding earth and water,
which both literally and symbolically represented submission to the Persian empire. The Battle of
Marathon exemplifies the heroic action of the Greeks. The Athenians, led by one of their ten
generals, Miltiades, unflinchingly faced the Persians, an army over twice the size of theirs, and
triumphed. The Athenians won the Battle of Marathon because they employed superior military
strategy. There are some discrepancies, however, between different literary sources about how the
Greeks fought the Battle of Marathon. For instance, Herodotus claims that the ten Athenian
generals could not decide whether to go into battle. He writes that Miltiades talked the other
generals into fighting. Herodotus writes that they waited for days for Miltiades to lead the army,
and then they went into battle (Hdt. 6.110 111.2). According to Nancy Demand, however,
Herodotus, unaware of the right of the polemarch to make all final decisions, wrote that Miltiades
decided when to lead the men into battle, because the longer they delayed the battle, the better
chance the Athenians had that the Spartans would make it in time to help. Regardless of any
conflict between sources, the heroism of the Athenians cannot be denied. Marathon represents the
victory of a small contingent of men fighting

Examples Of Evil In Jekyll And Hyde
Mask of Evil What is Evil? The meaning of evil is profoundly immoral and malevolent. Some
examples of evil are anonymously emailing death threats, suing someone who did nothing wrong
in order to try to collect a big payday and passing on information that you know is a lie about a
political opponent. These are not truly evil, they are mainly rude. The mask I made shows that
there are 2 different faces. It represents that most evil people have 2 faces. (They wear a fake

Beloved
Slavery has been a vital part of America s history since it began in 1619. Such history must be
preserved in order to understand its ongoing influence in issues today, but thousands of stories of
those enslaved have been lost or forgotten in time. Toni Morrison expresses why the narrative of
slavery must be continued on by integrating the life of Margaret Garner into her novel Beloved. In
Beloved, Toni Morrisonintertwines fiction with the story of Margaret Garner in order pass it on and
explore what might have been if the circumstances surrounding Garner had been different.
Margaret Garner and Sethe s murder of their children happened very similarly, but the reaction and
the aftermath differed. In 1856, Margaret Garner killed her youngest child, and went to trial as a
result. The case garnered nationwide attention and inspired sympathy for the abolitionist cause.
Despite the support, Garner struggles to process what she has done. She knows her child is dead,

Superego Of Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud, a renowned psychologist and psychoanalyst, is notably known for creating the
idea of the id, the ego and superego. These three concepts, according to Freud, make up the human
psyche and provide some insight and understanding into how the human mind works. These so
called systems in the brain are in no way physical but together, they make up a whole and
contribute towards an individual s behavior.
The id is described as the primitive component of one s personality as it consists of everything
biologically inherited at birth. This includes one s instincts and sexual desires. The id can be
described as being impulsive and contains all of the drives and hidden urges of an individual.
Repressed memories in the unconscious mind resides in the id. Freud believed that the id, ego and
superego developed at different stages in an individual s life. A newborn child is all id, as it
does not have the morals and social influences that come with the ego and superego. The ego,
unlike the id, is partly conscious and partly unconscious. It serves as the intermediary between the
id and the superego as it makes decisions based on reason, instead of unrealistically and logically
(as the id would) or based on morality and societal influences (as the superego would). The ego
would create the realistic ways to fulfill the id s demands that are impulsive and with little regard to
any consequences. Defense mechanisms exist within the ego due to the fact that it often faces

Essay about John-Jin by Rose Tremain
John Jin by Rose Tremain is a short story with two main characters. We have John Jin himself,
who was Chinese and born with a disease that held back his growth. He would only grow in
minute little bursts. When John Jin became older his adopted parents took him to Manchester to
see a specialist who then started him on treatments of growth hormone shots. Things started to
look up but after ten years when John Jin was 12, the shots took a bad affect on him and he
developed Creutzfeldt and Jacob disease. This disease is more commonly known as Mad Cow
disease.
As for the narrator of the story, her name is Susan. She was 10 years old when John Jin came into
her family. She wanted to become a great Spanish dancer. She viewed John Jin as... Show more

Her father would wish at a wishing well there for John Jin. Two years later the pavilion was rebuilt
with help from girders purchased by the locals with a name engraved on them. Suzan s parents
bought one with John Jin s name on it.
In my own view, the pavilion stood for mortality. Meaning that nothing lasts forever and everything
has its end. When the pavilion was there at the beginning of the story, Susan showed great
excitement for going there and described it as a fun place to be. Toward the end of the story she
didn t describe the pavilion as a great place to be anymore. Instead, she walked to the end of the pier
and looked down wondering if someone was to remove John Jin s girder, would everything fall? I
get a since that the narrator had the same point of view that I did. I think that what she meant by
saying that is, I wonder what would have happened if John Jin never existed anymore. She s getting
a since that no one or anything is immortal.
Susan said toward the end of the story that she knows something important now and not to wish
for anything unless you know precisely what you re going to get and how. I think what she learnt
was that if you wish for something and it comes true, it may seem great at the time but nothing
lasts forever and to be careful because it can hurt worse after it leaves.

Socrates, Machiavelli, And Rousseau s Views On Political...
Socrates, Machiavelli, and Rousseau are three philosophers discussing political ethics from entirely
different perspectives. This paper argues that Socrates, Machiavelli, and Rousseau are all idealists
regarding their stances on political ethics. First, this paper argues that Socrates is an idealist due his
belief that the current government has much more potential than it is currently reaching, and that
the government could eventually be changed. Second, this paper argues that Rousseau is an idealist
because of his unrealistically positive view of the natural state of humanity and negative view of
society. Lastly, this paper argues that Machiavelli is idealistic because of the overwhelming,
impossible number of criteria that the Prince... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He proclaims that examining both myself and others is really the very best thing that a man can do,
and that life without this sort of examination is not worth living (Plato 66). Socrates believes that
the government will be able to change so that people who value goodness and truth would be in
power. However, later in the Apology, Socrates contradicts himself when he explains why he has
led a mostly private life, saying that if I had long ago attempted to take part in politics, I should
have died long ago (Plato 58). Socrates believes a man who really fights for justice must lead a
private, not a public, life (Plato 59). This goes against what he has been saying for the rest of the
trial and demonstrates the unrealistic quality of the high standards to which he holds the
government and leaders. If Socrates says it is dangerous for proponents of justice to live a
public life, it becomes extremely difficult for politicians to be virtuous and morally good, since
politicians live essentially their whole lives in the public sphere. It is not realistic for Socrates to
believe that the government of Athens could progress so that good people hold the power, when
he has shown that in his own experience and observations it is not safe for good people to hold
public positions.

The 1964 Atlantic hurricane season featured Hurricane Dora, the most recent landfalling hurricane
along the First Coast of Florida. The season officially began on June 15, and lasted until November

the Atlantic basin. The season was slightly above average, with twelve total storms and six
hurricanes. All of the hurricanes strengthened into major hurricanes, which had not occurred since

Growth of Computers
With the evolution of technology, computers have become more and more advanced due to the
knowledge learned from technicians and other people throughout the world. The first computer

Personal Identity Argument
Unity as an Argument for Personal Identity
This essay will discuss the idea that personal identity persists over time. It will start by briefly
analysing some philosophical approaches to the problem, with views from RenГ© Descartes, G.W.
Leibniz, Thomas Reid, Ludwig Wittgenstein, John Perry and Derek Parfit. Also in the discussion,
the concept of psychological continuity will be presented, and also its reaches and limits. I will,
then, introduce the concept of unity as a consequence of personal continuity, and its compelling
argument for the persistence of personal identity. As a conclusion, some suggestions as to where the
discussion of personal identity should advance will be recommended.

The same is true for the mind of the person s identity: is it possible to re identify a person based on
his/her continuity? How can I know if the continuity was affected or remained the same?
The first difficulty is thus revealed: if there is continuity, then, there must be something that
continues. In the proposal of continuity of personal identity it is not necessary that there be an
element that continues. Wittgenstein uses the thread analogy to explain this concept: [...] the
strength of the thread does not reside in the fact that some one fibre runs through its whole length,
but in the overlapping of many fibres. .
We have, then, an alternate proposition to that of substantial criteria to understand personal identity.
Over time, personal identity is no longer thought as what persists , but how it persists . We persist
over time because of certain continuity. But in what consists this

My Best Experience
1,826 Days I met my best friends five years ago. A lot can happen in five years. There are 1,826
days in five years. That means that over that span of time, the world presents 1,826 fresh starts,
each one containing a new experience. Every experience brings its own array of emotions. You
can learn a lot about someone by the way that they react to new experiences. My friends and I
have had our fair share of new experiences together. We shared our experiences of our first day in
high school together, our first homecoming, having the freedom to drive, our first relationship,
our first heartbreak, family issues, even our first periods. Each one was terrifying and
exhilarating, and each one presented its own set of challenges. What color dress should we get?
Do you think we have enough gas to get there? Should we believe him when he says it will only
hurt a little? Was everything else he said just a lie? Why does dad sleep on the couch now? How
are we going to make it through the day with these cramps? Every one of these questions we had
to answer our selves with nothing but the help of each other. We never found out the right answers,
and to this day we still don t know the right answers. We probably never will. Although there
probably is no right answer to any of the questions that life presents us, searching for the answer has
not only brought us closer together than ever, it has also taught us things about ourselves and each
other that we may have never discovered. Since the

France, Spain, and the Netherlands. Freedom and liberty were the major themes of the
Revolution. So the idea of liberty was just a central reality to the lives of most African
Americans. To win freedom thousands of slaves opposed the patriot cause and risked their lives to

were often assigned to do the most dangerous duties and they received lower payment than white
soldiers. Other than doing military service slaves found other ways to escape to freedom. Some

Power Of Joseph Stalin
Following the death of Lenin in January 1924, Joseph Stalin emerged as the vital dictator of
Russia in February; he ruled the Soviet Union like a personal fiefdom. He aimed to transform the
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from a backwards agriculture society into a great
industrial totalitarian nation, which he believed was essential if Russiawas to survive in a world of
powerful and hostile capitalist states (Todd Allan 2001). Stalin claimed that
The major priority should be to consolidate the Marxian socialist system with the USSR and make
the country strong again (Cowie. H.R, 1992).
Stalin subsequently based the organisation of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union
Government (CPSUG) on the principles of democratic centralism, aiming to achieve the
dictatorship of the proletariat (Payton Rousseau). According to Payton Rousseau, under Stain s
reign, the CPSUG and Soviet Government were two separate bodies, however, almost all high
government officials were Bolsheviks party members. It was this system of interlocking dual
membership that enabled the CPSU to both make and enforce policy (Payton Rousseau). This
level of government authority allowed Stalin to enact any policy he saw necessary, as he was the
leading General Secretary and by the late 1930 s Joseph Stalin was exercising as much power, in
as authoritarian a manner, as the Tsars had done before him (Cowie. H.R, 1992). This idea
coincides with a comment made in 1974 by Alexander Vasilevsky, a

says that she will not marry Paris, she is being disobedient to her parents as she was told to
marry him. Lastly, Balthasar is disobedient to Romeo as is told to leave. When Romeo tells
Balthasar to leave he disobediently does not listen when he hides and spies on him when he

The Effect Of Erich Remarque s All Quiet On The Western Front
War, a monstrosity overlooked by civilians as only an event, can only be experienced first hand
for what horrors it truly brings. World War I, also known as The War to End All Wars, brought
darkness to the world from July 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918, as several combatants took place
in the war. Erich Remarque s novel takes place during World War I
as it tells a story about young
German soldiers fighting on the front line. Throughout the novel, Paul Bäumer, the main
protagonist, faces many horrors such as the loss of his comrades, the brutality of combat, and the
horrid nature of the front line. When Paul and his squad are ordered back to a field depot to be re
organized, he rests and reflects on the horrors of recent events and loss of fellow... Show more

Usually, a war is won when one side surrenders, but those outcomes do not make everything
better. Paul realizes war sets, people against one another and men have to innocently slay [each]
other (Remarque 262). Men slaying each other happens to be a dark horror of the brutality of
war which cannot be avoided because they are forced to do so. The front line consists of the
troops closest to the enemy and carries out the most horrific brutalities of the war. Bäumer and
his squad are on the front line and experience things most human beings should never have to
see. In the summer of 1918, most men know they are losing the war and cannot win. Paul has
lost many comrades and the true horror of war makes everything much worse. The German
forces are being driven back and the soldiers are fatigued. All over the place are yellow pools
with red spiral streams of blood which the dead, wounded, and survivors slowly sink into
(Remarque 286). These settings have made this part of the war a true monstrosity for the
soldiers. They cannot keep on fighting as this darkness rules over any hope of fighting back. The
horrors of war are never experienced by most human beings but will be by soldiers who are
usually not prepared for them. Losing fellow comrades, experiencing the brutality of combat, and
the horrific nature of war are true horrors which most soldiers will

The Qur an is believe to the ultimate source of God by many Muslim believers. It contains 114
suras for the believers as the core practices of the Islamic religion and Muslims throughout the
world recites its verses (Chang, Lecture. 1/21/14). They believed the prophet of Allah was
Muhammad, who received the words of Allahthrough Angel Gabriel, and was passed on with the

Surely God is my Lord and your Lord; so serve him. This is a straight path (Sura 3:38 64, pg.107,
Reader), as said promoted a sense of togetherness within the Islamic community. Muslims are
faithful believer by being the one who submits him/herself to the will of God. There is no god
but God, and assuredly God is the All mighty, the All wise (Sura 3:38 64, pg.108, Reader),
explains that god is the only one worthy for worship. The purpose for their existence as a
Muslim attains to be their search for peace and space during their lifetime, and achievement of
eternal salvation in their afterlife. But as for the believers, who do deeds of righteousness, He
will pay them in full their wages (Sura 3:38 64, pg.108, Reader), promise of salvation for followers.
In order to reach Allah, Muslims go through the Five Pillars (Gordon 71). First step
Ye 3
is called the Kalima, which is for Muslims to devote their full submission to God, and believe
that there is only one God (Chang, Lecture. 1/23/14). Second is the prayer, in which followers
prays 5 times a day separating into (dawn, midday, afternoon, sunset, and before bed) and also
performing ritual cleansing (Gordon 71). Praying during these times of the day pronounce a sense
of community and unity in Islam, as it was a psychological effect to everyone that there was a
common bond. The third step was Almsgiving, which is separated into two forms. The zakat and

Six Degrees Of Separation Case Analysis
There is a common belief that every person on the planet is connected through a chain of five
people. Using this phenomenon, scam artist Pau, from Six Degrees of Separation (1993), was able
to con wealthy families by pretending to be their children`s friend from college. Paul, however,
became attached to one of these families the Flan and Ouisa Kittredge since he became Flan`s son.
From this first encounter with the Kittredges, Paul immediately begins acting as if he were
Flan`s son. After Paul first barges into the Kittredges door due to a fake mugging, he
immediately treats Flan as if he were his father by cooking and cleaning for him. For Flan, this
treatment causes Paul to fill the void of his children at college, so Flan also begins treating Paul
as a son. For instance, Flan gives Paul a pink shirt that belonged to his son Woody. The shirt
however, had sentimental value to Woody as his father gave him the shirt when he realized that
Woody had become muscular. The shirt, which represented Flan`s love, was passed from Woody to
Paul, signifying that Paul slowly replaced Woody as Flan`s son. ... Show more content on

When Paul decides to scam a couple he met in Central Park, he concocts an elaborate story in
which Flan is his father. He claimed that he was a product from Flan`s hippie, radical days as a
freedom marcher and that Flan abandoned his mother after Paul`s birth. Due to the story`s
intricacy, Paul most likely believed that the story was true and that he was in fact Flan`s son.
Moreover, when asked his real name by Ouisa, Paul claims that his real name is Paul Portier
Kittredge . Also, during this phone call, Paul reveals to Ouisa that he felt a special bond to the
Kittredge and hoped to become just like Flan by becoming an art dealer. Paul`s idolization of Flan
suggests his desire to become Flan`s

The thing that I find most compelling about this culture is how they have manage to stand the
test of time with there harsh standards they have placed upon themselves do to their beliefs in
these magical rituals and ceremonies. The one type of ritual that I think is the most interesting
to me is the fact hat they believed in some of these magical rituals and ceremonies so much that
they would actually sometimes toucher themselves to complete these rituals that are supposed
to heal or help you but in the process bring unbelievable pain in some cases. Another thing that I
found to actually be crude and unsetting is the fact that if you were sick they would literally
quarantine you and if you don t get better you are just left to die. Especially young children the
fact they they would have a place designated for sick kids to basically go and die since younger
kids have a lesser chance of surviving then adults do. The temple that was used was literally the
place they kids where supposed to go to die. There were things that I found interesting and there are
thing that I have strong feeling against because they go against my morals. These groups of humans
and the culture that they believe in is very harsh due to all the different rituals and ceremonies that
they have. The culture that they believe in also dictates

Incident Background On September 24, 2010, a laptop was stolen from an unlocked Urology
office at the Henry Ford Health Systems hospital. The laptop did contain password protection
software; however, it may not have been enough to permit access if the thief had advanced
knowledge in computers. Additionally, the information stored on the laptop did not include social
security or health insurance information, but instead held patient names, medical record numbers,
dates of birth, telephone numbers, e mail addresses, and treatment and doctor visits (Moscaritolo,
2010, p. 1). It is unknown how many records were contained on the laptop, but all records were
related to prostate services that were provided during an eleven year span.
Reaction to Incident Once it was revealed that the laptop was missing, Meredith Phillips, the
chief privacy officer for the hospital, notified all involved patients by letter and offered each of
them a free one year credit monitoring service (Henry Ford Health System, 2010). The hospital
also established a telephone help line that addressed patient concerns (toll free), as well as initiated
an internal investigation to determine if appropriate security measures were followed. Furthermore,
all employees were re trained in security procedures and

The Great Fire Of London
17th Century Blaze
Beginning on September 2, 1666, a monstrous inferno incinerated nearly eighty percent of London
within four days. This calamity caused thousands of frightened people to become homeless. The
Great Fire of London portrays the harsh reality of a devastating catastrophe: the burning of an entire
city and the steps taken towards the recreation of a thriving empire.

destroyed by the inferno. A prior fire of 1633 to The Great Fire of London cleared a path at its
North end that halted the fire in 1666. Many buildings perished, though the London Bridge
survived. Churches that were made of stone were not completely destroyed and now are seen as
smoking ruins (Schofield 1). The people of the town did not have much to remember even after
attempts were made to control the fire.
Numerous tactics were deployed to contain the flames. A common procedure to stop the
spreading fire was to destroy the households where the path of the flame was coming, creating
fire breaks . By the time these demolitions were ordered, the fire had already spread throughout
the town. Mayor Bludworth hesitated to take these precautions due to his concern about the
financial repercussions the city would be left to fund ( The Great Fire ... 1). If Bludworth had
taken these precautions, the city may have never encountered this treacherous fire. The lack of this
certain procedure was put aside and caused the Great Fire of London to be one of the biggest

A Nation Is A Nation By Ernest Renan
Ernest Renan, in his classic essay What is a Nation , excluded religion, race, material interests,
language, military necessity and even geography as suitable answers to his question. As an
alternative, he argues, a nation is a spiritual principle, the outcome of the profound complications of
history (quoted in Mehta, 1999, p. 187). In Ernest s remark, more than anything else, the spiritual
principle included a specific outlook toward a shared history. In this case, a nationis fundamentally
founded on the possession of memories and a shared past. This is evident, as I have observed, in the
Baloch nationalist movement in Pakistan, where the Baloch justify their distinctive national
character by their history, which distinct them from the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nationalism can make a group fight fiercely for establishing its own sovereignty and could lead it
to rule, that in itself does not reveal which of these nationalisms is ought to rule. Ultimately, the
number of distinctive cultures and potential nationalisms are going to extinct, or become
assimilated in the sea of the nation state (Gellner, 2008, pp. 42 43). For Gellner, it is irrational to
hold nationalism responsible for being forceful in homogenizing a people through its agencies
which is under the command of nationalist movements. Instead, it is the typical prerequisite for
nationalism as an educated, culturally standardized, exchange capable and transportable population
is what modern industrial states must have to operate successfully. In the light of the above, the
main weakness of nationalism is that only a very small fraction of nationalisms attain their goals

Pumpkin aid in weight loss, sharpening vision, your immune system, skin care, cancer and
diabetes. The added fiber aids in weight loss, beta carotene aids in vision, and vitamin A aids in
stronger immunity. On top of the fiber benefits, one cup of canned pumpkin is ninety percent
water; it also contains less than fifty calories. Because beta carotene, is converted to Vitamin A
in the body, this enables the retina to absorb and process light. This is achieved by consuming
one cup of pumpkin which is equal to the 200 percent daily recommended intake of Vitamin A
(Obenschain). The immune system uses that same Vitamin A to combat against infections,
viruses and infectious diseases. DIY pumpkin mask along with the beta carotene leaves the skin
soft and exfoliated along with an added protection against UV rays. The Beta carotene and
Vitamins A and C in pumpkin are essential in fighting cancer; by lowering the risk of some types
of cancer, and acting as a shield against cancer causing free radicals. Research shows pumpkins
can be used to reduce blood glucose level in diabetics by improving glucose tolerance and increase

  • 2. A Pro Versus Con Argumentative Article Essay In America we currently have tax placed on our gas. However, with new changes in the automotive industry, there have been ideas of changing the tax to a tax based on miles travelled rather than gas. Mr. Earl Blumenauer and Mr. Phil Byrd both expressed their strong views on the topic in a pro versus con argumentative article. Blumenauer and Byrd both built up their credibility by using strong sources, including facts and statistics, and appealing to the readers emotions; however towards the end of the article both sides had a slight flaw which weakened their credibility. When analyzing both viewpoints of the topic, the credibility of the sources and appeals to ethos in the article are very important. The pro side of the article was written by Earl Blumenauer, a sponsor for the Road Usage Fee Pilot Program Act. After looking further into his profession, he works as a congressman for Oregon. Since he is only a sponsor for the program, there are unanswered questions as to if he is knowledgeable enough on the subject of these types of taxes. After further reading you learn that he actually used his job as a representative to introduce the Pilot Programming Act to congress. The program is taking place in Oregon, where they are beginning projects in hope of switching over to a tax on miles travelled rather than gas. Whereas, the con side was written by Phil Byrd, the chairman for the American Trucking Association and the president of Bulldog Hiway Express. He seems like the more ... • 4. Model Three Stages Of Kurt Lewin s Theory The Model three stages Unfreeze, Change and Refreeze which was explained by Lewin by changing the shape of a block of ice. He explained that if one have large cube of ice but realised after some time that he wants a cone of ice, what to do? First, melt the ice so that is become easier to change Unfreeze. The second step shape the iced water into the want form Changeand finally freeze to the new form Refreeze. It is likely to take these phases to entirely complex levels yet I don t trust this is important to have the capacity to work with the theory. Be that as it may, know that the hypothesis has been condemned for being excessively simplified. The method has changed a lot since the theory was initially introduced in 1947, however the Kurt Lewin model is still to a great degree important. Many new models are actually based on Kurt Lewin model. The first stage which is the unfreezing one, is the most vital to recognise the change happening around and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This indicates that it does not serve to define the objective of planned change in group performance as the reaching of a different level. Permanency of the new level, or permanency for a desired period, should be included in the objective. Lewin s concern is about emphasising the change and make sure that the desired change is established and continued into the future. By not doing this, might force people to go back while doing what they are used to. Since, the Lewin s model has a definite end; I don t think that this would be adopted for Casela World of Adventures as there are still lots of changes to come and in high speed. This model would rather be used to set up change management for people/organisation where it is quite easy to understand by ensuring that all stages are extended to help for better ... The Fate of Oedipus in Oedipus the King In Oedipus the King there comes a point in the play where Oedipus learns something that plays an important role throughout the play. He learns from a oracle that he will eventually kill his own Father and sleep with his own mother. As one could imagine this is a shock to Oedipus, and he does not believe the oracle. However, he cannot prevent any of this from happening because it is his fate. Oedipus is a victim of circumstances beyond his control, his life had already been planned by the Greek Gods. After hearing this he flees Corinth and heads toward Thebes believing to of left his father behind in case the oracle was right. However, the god Apollo has somewhat tricked him. Nonspecific Immune Response Analysis LO 2.28 I understand how to use representations or models to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the effects of disruptions to dynamic homeostasis in biological systems. Both models and representations may be used to show the effects of changes in homeostasis. The main ways to achieve homeostasis is through positive and negative feedbackand disruptions can be viewed easily through models or representations. (Campbell 644 645, 650 652) LO 2.29 I understand how create representations and models to describe immune responses. There are two main types of immune responses; primary and secondary. Primary is the first time a response occurs in the presence of an antigen while secondary refers to a response after the initial. Both may be modeled by showing examples of an antigen and the respective secondary /primary response. (Campbell 719 720) LO 2.30 I understand how to create representations or models to describe nonspecific immune defenses in plants and animals. • 10. The American Dream Is A Mere Fantasy For The Poor Essay The American Dream is an idea that needs no introduction: it has been embedded into our minds since elementary school by our history textbooks, teachers, and parents. It s an unwritten rule for many adults keep the American Dream alive in our next generation. And why shouldn t we? With all of the countless rags to riches stories bred through our county s proud history, the American Dream becomes self evident. America truly is the land of opportunity; so why are most of our povertystricken citizens stuck at the bottom? Has the dream become a mere fantasy for the poor? One may say that it is possible for almost all poor Americans to climb the social hierarchy, but they unwilling to put in the effort necessary. While I do concede that it may be possible to climb the social ladder, I d argue that the negative affect poverty has on work and mental health rig the system so that the opportunity simply does not exist for the poor. Don t get me wrong, the dream is not dead for the poor. There must be a few exceptions to the rule. A Pew study finds that four percent of people born into poverty work their way up into the higher classes. Four is not too terrible; the ratio isn t flattering, but some are still achieving the American Dream. A more unfortunate number is 70 the percent of men and women born, raised, and perished in poverty (see fig. 1). The overwhelming majority of those born into low income houses will statistically never escape. Poverty isn t just a problem; it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although this is a long shot, you can see the difference between the two groups of boys based off of how close they stand to each other. The two teams of boys are standing with each other at a social distance; they are friends and if they reached out their arms they could easily touch one another. Both teams are standing close enough to engage in two way communication, but they are by no means friendly with each other. The distances give off the emotional impact that these teams are against one another. This scene from The Longest Yard also shows how proxemics distances can give a clue to the relationships amongst people. In this frame, the convicts football teamis cheering and chanting together the night before their big game against the guards. The educational value of this game, in my opinion is on the way the game can relate a real life problem solving characteristics into a realistic graphic. Players are not presented with a superhero with unrealistic capabilities, but they will see a fictional human like character that has limitation and weaknesses. I m talking about the United States of America. If you are an U.S natural born citizen you have rights and responsibilities that protect you based on the Declaration of Independence and the U.S Constitution. People who are in the position to become U.S. citizens gain the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities of citizenship as natural born American with the only restriction that they can t be eligible for President of the United States. The United States Constitution protects the rights of every U.S. citizen from every background, culture or religion. Here are some of the rights and responsibilities that every citizen should exercise and respect to ensures that America continues to be a free and prosperous nation. Before I start describing some of the rights and responsibilities it s important to talk about the difference between these two. Rights are what protect you as individual in a society, things that the government has established for good in benefit of the citizens written on the Constitution and responsibilities is what makes you morally or ethically accountable in society, in other words rights are given to you from the government as a form of privilege and responsibilities is how you repay or give in return for those rights given to you. • 14. Literary Analysis Of A Farewell To Arms Haunting yet passionate, A Farewell to Arms allows readers to perceive the story from a soldier s point of view. Hemingway depicts the harsh war with sensory but blunt details. His expression of words has an emotional appeal on the reader, allowing his or her to put themselves in the shoes of any character. For example, on page 73 Hemingway writes, There was sunlight coming through the shutters. I saw the big armoire, the bare walls, and two chairs. My legs in dirty bandages, stuck straight out of the bed. Hemingway fully describes what is seen and this permits his audience to have a full picture in their mind. Hemingway includes important quotes throughout the novel. On page 26, Miss Barkley starts, You did say you loved me, didn t you? and Henry replies, Yes, I lied, I loveyou. I had not said it before. Later, she brings up the rotten game they play as their affection isn t completely real. The men at the mess begin to talk about protesting war on page 61, You are a foreigner. You are a patriot. And the ones who would not make war? Can they stop it? I don t know. They speak of this earlier in the book (page 43) as well but they can never fully understand how war starts or ends. On page 99, Henry and Barkley speak of their love, I only wanted it for you. There isn t a me. I m you. Don t make up a separate me. Despite these very strong correlations, no significant results were found for any of the other variables and more importantly that support the predicted relationship between job engagement, education and job satisfaction. However, when job engagement was accounted for both the variables become more insignificant. The graph of the worldwide data (refer to Figure 1) highlights that as job satisfaction increases, so to does income roughly, however, the data does deviate from this pattern slightly for some of the countries. Job engagement also appears to follow a similar pattern, with less satisfied countries having less job engagement, however, as engagement increases there seems to be less variation between countries. Education does not seem to have any strong effects displayed in the graph as the data falls and rises throughout the graph. The relationship between the variables is less pronounced for the US (refer to Figure 2) as there does not seem to be a strong relationship between any of the variables. Income and education follow a similar trend to the countrywide data, both slightly increasing with job satisfaction. • 16. `` The Lesson `` By Tony Cade Bambara If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it too? Throughout the ages, how many times have parents bellowed these words? Although the question is dreadfully annoying to most children, it is designed to make them think about their individuality and the dangers of conforming. Today, more than ever, with the use of social media, our society is under pressure to conform. With the creation of Facebook and Twitter, our goals are to be friended, liked, followed, and accepted. Is our nation in danger of becoming lemmings? According to an entry in Urban Dictionary written by Aegis Kleais, a lemming is [a] derogatory term used to reference a person who seemingly does not possess any form of individual thought and instead mindlessly follows the behaviors and actions of the masses. Fortunately, short stories such as Tony Cade Bambara s The Lesson (1972) and Langston Hughes Salvation (1940) remind us of both the positive and negative effects of how an individual deals with group conformityand social pressure. The Lesson is a story of a close knit group of children from impoverished Harlem, New York who are taken on a field trip to learn about economic inequality. In Salvation, Hughes recalls his experience of religion as a young child, particularly an intense religious revival. Through the use of setting, characterization, and irony, both authors show the importance of standing up for one s self regardless of social pressure. In each ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Between the years 500 479 BC, the Greeks and the Persians fought two wars. Although the Persian power vastly surpassed the Greeks, the Greeks unexpectedly triumphed. In this Goliath versus David scenario, the Greeksas the underdog, defeated the Persians due to their heroic action, divine support, and Greekunity. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first battle of the Persian War, the Battle of Marathon, took place in 490 BC. King Darius sent troops to Greece which stopped at each Greek island along the way demanding earth and water, which both literally and symbolically represented submission to the Persian empire. The Battle of Marathon exemplifies the heroic action of the Greeks. The Athenians, led by one of their ten generals, Miltiades, unflinchingly faced the Persians, an army over twice the size of theirs, and triumphed. The Athenians won the Battle of Marathon because they employed superior military strategy. There are some discrepancies, however, between different literary sources about how the Greeks fought the Battle of Marathon. For instance, Herodotus claims that the ten Athenian generals could not decide whether to go into battle. He writes that Miltiades talked the other generals into fighting. Herodotus writes that they waited for days for Miltiades to lead the army, and then they went into battle (Hdt. 6.110 111.2). According to Nancy Demand, however, Herodotus, unaware of the right of the polemarch to make all final decisions, wrote that Miltiades decided when to lead the men into battle, because the longer they delayed the battle, the better chance the Athenians had that the Spartans would make it in time to help. Regardless of any conflict between sources, the heroism of the Athenians cannot be denied. Marathon represents the victory of a small contingent of men fighting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Superego Of Sigmund Freud Sigmund Freud, a renowned psychologist and psychoanalyst, is notably known for creating the idea of the id, the ego and superego. These three concepts, according to Freud, make up the human psyche and provide some insight and understanding into how the human mind works. These so called systems in the brain are in no way physical but together, they make up a whole and contribute towards an individual s behavior. The id is described as the primitive component of one s personality as it consists of everything biologically inherited at birth. This includes one s instincts and sexual desires. The id can be described as being impulsive and contains all of the drives and hidden urges of an individual. Repressed memories in the unconscious mind resides in the id. Freud believed that the id, ego and superego developed at different stages in an individual s life. A newborn child is all id, as it does not have the morals and social influences that come with the ego and superego. The ego, unlike the id, is partly conscious and partly unconscious. It serves as the intermediary between the id and the superego as it makes decisions based on reason, instead of unrealistically and logically (as the id would) or based on morality and societal influences (as the superego would). The ego would create the realistic ways to fulfill the id s demands that are impulsive and with little regard to any consequences. He proclaims that examining both myself and others is really the very best thing that a man can do, and that life without this sort of examination is not worth living (Plato 66). Socrates believes that the government will be able to change so that people who value goodness and truth would be in power. However, later in the Apology, Socrates contradicts himself when he explains why he has led a mostly private life, saying that if I had long ago attempted to take part in politics, I should have died long ago (Plato 58). Socrates believes a man who really fights for justice must lead a private, not a public, life (Plato 59). This goes against what he has been saying for the rest of the trial and demonstrates the unrealistic quality of the high standards to which he holds the government and leaders. If Socrates says it is dangerous for proponents of justice to live a public life, it becomes extremely difficult for politicians to be virtuous and morally good, since politicians live essentially their whole lives in the public sphere. It is not realistic for Socrates to believe that the government of Athens could progress so that good people hold the power, when he has shown that in his own experience and observations it is not safe for good people to hold public positions. In the proposal of continuity of personal identity it is not necessary that there be an element that continues. Wittgenstein uses the thread analogy to explain this concept: [...] the strength of the thread does not reside in the fact that some one fibre runs through its whole length, but in the overlapping of many fibres. . Using this phenomenon, scam artist Pau, from Six Degrees of Separation (1993), was able to con wealthy families by pretending to be their children`s friend from college. Paul, however, became attached to one of these families the Flan and Ouisa Kittredge since he became Flan`s son. For Flan, this treatment causes Paul to fill the void of his children at college, so Flan also begins treating Paul as a son. For instance, Flan gives Paul a pink shirt that belonged to his son Woody. A Nation Is A Nation By Ernest Renan Ernest Renan, in his classic essay What is a Nation , excluded religion, race, material interests, language, military necessity and even geography as suitable answers to his question. As an alternative, he argues, a nation is a spiritual principle, the outcome of the profound complications of history (quoted in Mehta, 1999, p. 187). In Ernest s remark, more than anything else, the spiritual principle included a specific outlook toward a shared history.
