Nathaniel Hawthorne s Puritan influences
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born into a family that possessed prominent Puritan ancestors, and the
shame he experienced as a result of their actions, as well as his odd fascination with them, had a
significant impact on his life and his writings. Though it would be an overstatement to say that
Hawthorne s knowledge of the Puritanway of life was his only source of inspiration, this
knowledge was certainly influential as it is often reflected in the majority of his work. Born in
Salem, Massachusetts in 1804, Hawthorne was born in a town whose Puritan past is well known
as a result of the infamous Salem witch trials. Though he was born well after the time of the
Puritans, growing up in a town so steeped in Puritan history is likely why... Show more content on

One important, though briefly mentioned, symbol of Hester and Dimmesdale s growth occurs
when Pearl receives a golden chain from a shipmaster. This chain is described as becoming a part
of her. The chain itself can be seen as a symbol of the golden link between heaven and Earth.
When Pearl takes and wears the golden chain, it is shown that she, and her parents, have been
redeemed because they have learned so much as a result of their sin (Manheim 3). The Scarlet Letter
was surely inspired in part by Hawthorne s Puritan ancestors as he was criticizing their cruelty
by displaying Hester and Dimmesdale as kind people who made a mistake and became better
people as a result. The novel also has a more modern lesson because being overly critical of
others is a problem that has always plagued humanity. This is part of the reason why The Scarlet
Letter is such an important work of American literature as its comments on a harsh society are
still fairly relevant. In addition to his many novels, Hawthorne wrote many short stories like The
Minister s Black Veil. Published in 1836, The Minister s Black Veil is about a minister named
Reverend Hooper who begins to wear a black veil over his face. Throughout the story the
townspeople are frightened by his actions and the reason why he is wearing the black

Scientific Lens
Anything that can be explained by science is treated as a known truth. There is a bias within the
scientific community based on the assumption that the public is uninformed, and scientist are
purveyors of facts (Bartell 7). Science and folklore have typically had a tumultuous relationship as
the scientific community attempts to re interpret phenomena previously explained by folklore and
/or supernatural mysticism as logical results of scientifically understood processes (Jordan 8). The
goal of interpreting the supernatural through a scientific lens is reflected in popular culture. I
believe that film and television mix sciencewith supernatural themes because science is such a
prominent aspect of modern society so it invokes feelings... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Throughout the episode there are a variety of technology used to help the investigators prove
that there is a ghost present. Grant Wilson, the co founder of TAPS hopes to prove that
paranormal investigation is a worthwhile science ( Altoona Tantrum. ). The team utilizes a lot of
high tech equipment when investigating a haunt. They typically must adapt equipment used for
other purposes to fit their paranormal needs. Some of the devices they use include: wireless
cameras, electronic voice phenomena (EVP) devices and electronic magnetic field (EMF)
devices. It seems that the primary goal for many of the investigators and those who watch the
show is to gain physical, recorded evidence that either confirms or denies the existence of ghost
and therefore proves the existence of life after death. The use of technology takes a subject that
may be viewed as nonsense or irrational and grounds it in modern society. Eaton writes that [o]n
the surface, use of technology appear[s] to be solely driven by a desire to accumulate empirical
data for scientific purposes. However, this reliance on technology drew upon the legitimacy of
scientific discourse (Eaton 406). This episode blended science and religion while dealing with the
paranormal. The team investigated using the equipment described above, but they also had one of

The True Face of Unethical Humor
Following Chaucer s description of the Miller in the General Prologue, The Miller s Tale reveals
that the Miller is more complex than his appearance initially suggests. Given its bawdy and
humorous nature, the Miller s story consists of events of cuckoldry, foolishness, and secrets
(1720, 1718, and 1719). As the teller of such a tale, the Miller would immediately be classified as
a crude man, interested only in the physical appeal of women. However, as the tale unfolds, it
imparts the Miller s unexpected empathy as he commiserates with Alison, who is trapped by the
norms of society. The Miller s story portrays not only the Miller s expected vulgar and deceptive
characteristics but also his surprisingly sympathetic nature.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
The Miller displays complete apathy for the norms of society through his satire of the
metaphysical Knight and clergyman. Furthermore, the Miller s bawdy nature progressively
worsens as he initially begins with his songs of prostitution and later describes a woman s
private areas, an action of atrocious audacity and low thinking, but he asserts is noble (1718).
Thus, in his bawdy rebellion, the Miller solely focuses on his lewd tale, disregarding the norms
of society. The Miller s deceptive qualities influence the characters actions in his story. During
his pilgrimage with the Miller, Chaucer discovers the habits of the golden thumb Miller and
describes him as a fox (1712). The Miller would cheat people by steal[ing] corn and charg[ing]
for it three times (1712). The Miller s characters also use guile as frequently as the Miller does.
In their affair, both Nicholas and Alison devise a plan to trick the jealous John. While speaking
to John alone, Nicholas warns him of a flood to come and states he must not waste words on the
wise; however, Nicholas tricks the so called wise carpenter and has intercourse with John s wife
after John falls asleep (1727). Furthermore, Absolom begs for a kiss from Alison, but she beard[s]
him, another instance of bawdy deceit (1730). Thus, the Miller s disposition of treachery propels
his characters in their misdemeanors, exemplifying his immoral nature; however, every apple on
the tree is not rotten.

How September 11th, 2001 Has Changed And Define American...
September 11th, 2001 has changed and defined American foreign policy for the past two decades.
Enemies of the United States are no longer only other nations, but also terrorist groups, which
operate transnationally and even between continents. On the night of September 11th, in the
aftermath of the deadliest terror attack the world has seen, former President George W. Bush and
his War Cabinet officially declared the start of the War on Terror . Bush would say on September
19th, 2001, The message to every country is, there will be a campaign against terrorist activity, a
worldwide campaign. And there is an outpouring of support for such a campaign. Freedom loving

Food Changes In Ancient China
During Ancient China, some things were the same as they are today in present China. For
example, they still grow and eat foods like rice, shellfish, fruits, and onions. In addition to this,
people eat foods divided into yin and yang categories due to Taoism beliefs. Yin included foods
that grew in the air. For example, fruits that grew on trees like peaches, wine, and citrons. Yang
foods were normally grown underground. For instance, onion and garlic were yang foods that were
grown underground. As time goes on, usually there is change happening as well. This happens
anywhere one goes. Whether there are huge adjustments or small modifications, they are all
differences. In Chinathere were changes in foodproduction and farming.
By contrast of the foods that remained constant, there were practices in Ancient China that have
been improved. For example, when farming, human labor was needed. Furthermore, farming areas
were strictly limited by the natural environment. Also, there were problems of diverting floods and
irrigation. During the Spring and Autumn period (722 481 BC), two improvements in farming
technology took place, improving these past issues. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Racial Illusions In The Movie
Sam Dawson is a single father, who has a developmental disability but is well adjusted to society.
Although, Sam often encounters limitations due to his mental disability, nevertheless he is able
to take care of Lucy. Sadly, his life deviates when Lucy turned eight and a judge assume that Mr.
Dawson was not competent to care for Lucy s wellbeing. It was not until the family court
realized that it was in Lucy s best interest to reside with her dad. The film shows a contrast in
Sam idea of being a decent father and the perspective of the government system. The language,
images, and themes used in the film to portray Sam as a childlike, lacking basic scholastic skills,
who is not capable of fulfilling his parental obligations. The government only sees Sam s disability
and the limitations he would place on Lucy. Sadly, the movie leaves a taste of dissatisfaction
because negativity and judgement are the prominent feeling towards Sam and his situation and
these judgements only enforce the idea of Sam not being a capable father.
Throughout the movie, language was used as a form of limitation and segregation towards Sam.
Everyone was aware that Sam had the intellectual capacity of a seven year old, which meant that
he could hold primitive conversations and had minimal knowledge, through this lack of diction
and knowledge it was possible for the court able to exemplify the risk of having a person with
disability raise a young girl. In the film, Mr. Turner mentioned Mr. Dawson, you

feminaw Feminist Reading of Kate Chopin s The Awakening...
A Feminist Reading of The Awakening
The Awakening is not new to me. However, in the class when I read it before the instructor refused
to entertain a feminist criticism. The theory presented was that Edna knew what kind of man she
was marrying and all these things she went through: her friendship with Madame Reisz leaving the
house, entertaining her friends at the party, her situation with Robert and Arobin were all selfish
efforts toward the ultimate freedom which is death.
I feel Chopin faults Leonce as much as Edna for Edna s problems. He is a cold fish. He is
controlling and he puts on a show for friends and neighbors proving he is a model husband which
he is not. He is Creole and I think Edna, being as reserve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Her search for freedom builds and destroys relationships. She befriends people and then chooses
to ignore them. Her final big party is her final farewell. She brings out all the sensuousness that her
reserve had kept her from expressing and enjoying. Everything pleasing to the senses is there for
her guests. There are colors, textures, tastes, and sounds for the senses to luxuriate. But all this
sensory enhancements doesn t keep her attention. She feels the same old ennui, and the party
shortly thereafter breaks up. Of course, all this meets with Leonce disapproval. His concern is not
about his wife s mental or emotional health, but rather, what people will say.
To experience freedom of the soul Edna has no choice but to return to the sea. It is the only thing
capable of giving her the emotional security and sensual satisfaction at the same time. She goes to
it and allows it to claim her.
Like many of Chopin s stories, The Awakeningends in a death. Chopin apparently sees death as
the ultimate freedom. No matter what we do as women in this world we are always restricted in
our movements by some facet of our lives. While Chopin tries to speak for women, I think this
premise that our lives are restricted also applies to men. There may not be as many restrictions but
they are there. Freedom s just another word for nothin left to loose. Janis Joplin

The Effects Of Climate Change On Development And The...
Human survival is dependent on myriad things, the first of which that come to mind are food,
water and shelter. As the world has developed, the abundance of each of these has increased
dramatically, especially in the developed world. However, along with this growing population and
resource web has come a growing understanding of disease, and its impacts on the more developed
and less developed parts of the world. Another effect of growing population is the concerning truth
of climate change: changes in climate not only alter the environment, but can alter the range and
distribution of diseases. Moreover, human population leads inherently to social networks and
systems that can have significant impact on development and the spread of disease. These impacts
can manifest as civil strife, or simply the unavoidable reality of proximity within a community. Lea
Berrang Ford, an Associate Professor at McGill University, has conducted numerous studies over
the past approximately fifteen years that blend together the complex aspects of disease spread in
general, choosing to focus mostly on African trypanosomiasisor sleeping sickness , and how
climatic and social pressures affect the spread of disease. Her work also extends beyond her own
research, into her classroom, and through her students, out into the world. Berrang Ford earned her
first degree, a BS in Environmental Geography, from the University of Guleph in 2000. She then

Role Of Quality Assurance And Quality Control

Quality assurance and quality control is the combination of quality assurance, the process or set of
processes used to measure and assure the quality of a product, and quality control, the process of
meeting products and services to consumer expectations. Quality assurance is process oriented and
focuses on defect prevention, while quality control is product oriented and focuses on defect
identification. Quality assurance and control affects companies in many ways, from the
productivity and profitability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the initial cost might seem expensive, the overall costs of ensuring delivery of quality
products and services might prove to be less than expected. There are four ways in which quality
assurance and control can affect a company, and they are: productivity, profitability, cost, and
customer satisfaction. Poor quality costs organization money in terms of productivity problems. If
an organization uses low quality parts and materials, systems will break down, even if of any high
quality parts or materials are also used. Low quality parts and materials can cause mechanical
breakdowns and failure, as well as slowing down the flow of work or even bringing work to a halt.
Improving productivity and quality in an organization usually results in increased customer and
employee contentment. If an organization implements and uses the quality management system
techniques such as cost analysis, process mapping, and benchmarking, they can attain regular
improvement in all work flow processes. Improved production will results in fewer deficiencies,
fewer delays and reduced costs. With improved productivity within an organization it leads to
increases profitability. When employees are engaged in a work environment in which teamwork is
emphasized and where quality products are the goal, the work environment flows more smoothly
than one in which quality is an afterthought. For example,

Theme Of Women In The Canterbury Tales
In Thousand and One Nights and Canterbury Tales, both women in the story are fighting to save
their kingdom. In Thousand and One Nights, Shahrazad volunteered to stay with the king hoping to
change his ways. In Canterbury Tales, the wife is standing up for the women in her kingdom and
teaches the Knight a lesson. These womenare very important in both stories because they step up to
make a change in their kingdom. In Thousand and One Nights, Shahrazad has volunteered to marry
the king, knowing that he kills the women he sleeps with the next morning (p.554). Shahrazad s
plan is to tell him stories every night with each one being better than the last (p.554). The king will
not want to killher because he will want to hear her stories and by doing this she hopes to teach the
king how to restore order in his own realm and his own soul (p.554).
The first night with the king, she asked if she could tell her sister goodbye before daybreak, so
her sister came and slept under the bed (p.566). Shahrazad s sister asked her to tell a story, so she
asked permission from the king (p.566). She told a story of the Merchant and the Demon and in
the middle of the story she fell asleep, leaving the king full of curiosity to hear the rest (p.568). The
next night the king asked her to finish her story and this went on for many nights (p.568). On the
fourth night, the king thought, By God, I will not have her put to death until I hear the rest of the

Summary 1 Lerner, Gonzalez, Small and Fischhoff (2003) undertook an experiment to study the
effects of fear and anger on perceived threats of terrorism. The design of the experiment was a
national field study. To acquire a nationally representative sample of American s, the researchers
drew a random sample of 1786 people, aged 13 88, from Knowledge Networks nationally
representative panel. These people were randomly assigned to complete a survey and numerous
psychosocial scales. The two psychosocial scales that the subjects had to complete were the five
item anxiety subscale (Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire) and a four item face valid
Desire for Vengeance Scale. An example of a statement in the Desire for Vengeance test is I felt a
need to punish those responsible for the recent terrorist attacks. Subjects had to rate these
statements on a scale of 1(disagree) to 2 (agree.) An example statement from the anxiety test is I
had difficulty falling or staying asleep. Participants had to rate this statement from 0 (not
experienced) to 5 (very often experienced). Of these 1786 participants, 927 of them completed an
additional survey and psychosocial tests. 143 were adolescents and the remainder was adults. Each
of these subsamples included 49% males, and the demographics roughly matched the census
statistics. Each person was randomly assigned to one of three emotion conditions. The emotion
conditions were angry, sad and afraid. The participants had to firstly

Similarities Between Kirkland And George Seurat
Connecting the Dots George Seurat and Vance Kirkland were avante garde artists from two
different time periods who experimented with new techniques and ideas in painting. Both
placed a heavy focus on color theory, which is believed to be the most important aspect for a
career as a painter. The two of them were able to develop their own dot painting styles and both
were heavily criticized for their newly invented techniques. Seurat was accused of being a cold
blooded mystifyer by one critic of his time. With exaggerated titles such as The Energy Of
Explosions 24 Billion Years B.C. (1978 no. 3), New York galleries of the 1970s criticized Kirkland
for the names of his paintings, because the titles to his paintings are not scientifically accurate....

Each one contains a subject matter of either urban scenes, landscapes or seashores. A Sunday on
La Grande Jatte is his most famous painting and the one that set the stage for his new found
techniques. The size of the painting was very much different than that of the smaller paintings
of the Impressionists. It was huge for the time, roughly taking up an entire wall, the painting
commanded attention from any viewer within the vicinity. The colors of the dots blend together
optically by the viewer s eyes to create a magnificently composed work of art. Kirkland on the
other hand, used subject matter that was out of this world. By attaching cosmic names to his
paintings such as The Energy of Explosions 24 Billion Years B.C. (1978 no. 3), Mysteries in
Vertical Space, Space Mysteries, Five Red Orange Suns In Space, Blue Mysteries Near the Sun,
and Blue Vibrations In Pink Space, it s clear to the viewer his subject matter is out of this world.
Before his death, Kirkland was able to create for different series of dot paintings, Energy of
Vibrations, Mysteries, Explosions, and Forces. There is also an optional theme to an earlier pre dot

Tech. Project aims at introducing biometric capable technology for use in automating the entire
attendance system for the students pursuing courses at an educational institute. The goal can be
disintegrated into finer sub targets; fingerprint capture transfer, fingerprint image processing and
wireless transfer of data in a server client system. For each sub task, various methods from
literature are analyzed. From the study of the entire process, an integrated approach is proposed.
Biometrics based technologies are supposed to be very efficient personal identifiers as they can
keep track of characteristics believed to be unique to each person. Among these technologies,
Fingerprint recognition is universally applied. It extracts minutia based features from scanned
images of fingerprints made by the different ridges on the fingertips.
The student attendance system is very relevant in an institute like ours since it aims at eliminating
all the hassles of roll calling and malpractice and promises a full proof as well as reliable technique
of keeping records of student s attendance.

What s So Special About Disney Parks?
Photo of Mickey s Fun Wheel prior to the showing of World of Color.
Disneyland and California Adventure are great examples of how a space can bring together
individuals from all types of backgrounds. Disparate people, of all ages, are welcomed to visit
Disney parks to interact with each other while enjoying the same attractions and entertainment.
According to Joel Kotkin, great cities are safe so that people feel secure, are busy with
commerce, and are sacred in the sense that the space originated from religious structures. By this
definition, Disneyland is comparable to that of a city because it is a safe place where adults and
children can visit. Additionally, the park is extremely busy by operating year... Show more content

Disney has marketed itself across cultures, languages, and borders so that the brand is universal.
This cultural spot has attracted a significant population size and density to create a critical mass ,

Intelligence And Power In Animal Farm By George Orwell
Intelligence and Power. These two concepts are closer than most think. Many political figures use
their intelligence to get their position in society. However, many use their intelligence for the
sake of themselves and not for others. Their intelligence is what lead them to power and power is
what polluted their mind. In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, a group of animals on a
farm called the Manor farm incite a rebellion against their human oppressor, Mr.Jones. After the

Their followers, however, are not educated most of the time. Not only leaders need intelligence
but they need the ignorance and loyalty of people to follow them. An example from the novel is
Boxer, the most respected and hard working animal on the farm. Boxer has such ridiculous
strength and his loyalty is higher than any other animal. The pigs see these traits and exploit
them for their own interests. When Napoleon becomes the leader of the farm, Boxer, voiced the
general feeling by the saying: If Comrade Napoleon says it, it must be right. And from then on he
adopted the maxim Napoleon is always right, in addition to his private motto of I will work
harder! (Orwell 56). As what the quote shows, Boxer is becoming very loyal to Napoleon,
ignorant to his corruption. Boxer s defining trait is his loyalty. Although one would consider
loyalty to be a positive trait, it can also be a negative trait as well. Boxer s real life counterpart,
The working class of communist Russia (International Socialism). is the same as well. They
simply accepted their position in society and was particularly royal to Stalin. They worked
extremely well in labor but like Boxer, they re uneducated. Like Boxer, they were betrayed by
those they were loyal to. The pigs and Stalinists see Boxer and the working class as nothing but
slaves. This is how leaders get their power. By having the loyalty of their followers and something

Story Of An Hour Disillusionment Essay
Disillusionment is the feeling of disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not
as good as one believed it to be. The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and Hills like White
Elephants by Ernest Hemingway are both short stories of woman protagonists in oppressed
relationships. In one of the stories, the womanrealizes the oppression in her marriage. While in the
other story, the protagonist is facing towards the oppression. A woman can be oppressed in a
marriage in many different ways, such as not having their own independence. In The Story of an
Hourand Hills Like White Elephants , the theme of disillusionment is seen in the conflict, thematic
development, and epiphany.

The epiphany in The Story of an Hour is Louise s realization of the freedom she will now

Maine Explosion
x On a peaceful night at the Coco Havana the Maine one of the first warships owned by the U.S.
Costing over 2 million dollars and weighing approximately 6,000 tons blew up in an explosion.
After taking about 9 years to build the ship, it was all ready to sail the seas. The Maine then
sailed the Atlantic Ocean for 3 years, after which it settled in Havana, Cuba in January of 1898.
On the night of February 15,1898 the ship was blown up in an explosion. This is an article on
whether it was an internal or external explosion that sank the Maine. After doing some research, I
found my position on the issue. I believe the sinking of the Maine was an internal explosion. After
years of investigation in the 1900s, they did not come up with a specific reason for the explosion.
However, some Americans blamed Spain. As you may know the effect of this explosion was the
Spanish American war. Which gave Cuba independence and America gained leadership of Guam,
Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

The Automobile Manufacturing Industry

vehicles: cars, trucks, vans and commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, farm equipment). For the past
twenty years, the automobile manufacturing industry has experienced continuous growth and
globalization. The industry utilizes a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having recognized and established numerous suppliers, manufactures are now able to substitute
suppliers and provide consumer with several options. Therefore, supplier power is considered to be
relatively lower in the automobile industry.
Threat of New Entrants (Low)
The threat of new entrants to the automobile manufacturing industry is low being that new players
are hard to come by and entering the industry is highly difficult. Entry barriers include, but are not
limited to: (1) safety and quality standards, (2) design and comfort, (3) servicing network, (4)
research and development, (5) brand loyalty, (6) economies of scale, (7) sales and distribution
channels, (8) access to raw materials, (9) technology and patent barriers, and (10) skilled human
resource availability.
The high safety and quality standards can be said to be two dimensional. First and foremost, the
bare minimum is highly enforced by regulatory bodies. In order to produce and sell, manufactures
must comply with each regulatory bodies requirements. The quality and safety characteristics that
each firm attempts to provide to the consumers often time relates to different features. Companies,
such as Toyota, Honda and BMW, all have an ample market share and presence due to the
consumers association with reliability in comparison to their features.

1.1 Explain The Difference Between Fire Intensity And...
1.1Explain (using words) how each of these three is calculated and identify the primary variable(s)
used in the calculations. Describe how these variables cause this influence.
Fireline intensity (IB) the rate of heat released over a set distance by the actively flaming front of
the fire (kW/m). It is calculated by measuring the weight of the fuel burned and the rate of spread.
The equation is IB = w h R
w is the weight of the fuel consumed by the fire (kg m 2).
h is the low fuel heat content and is a constant. 18260 kJ kg 1 = h
R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1).
The weight of the fuel and the rate of spread affect fire intensity by increasing or decreasing it,
which in turn affects the fireline intensity. The heavier the fuel is, the more there is and the faster
the spread therefore increasing both the fire intensity and fireline intensity. The lighter the fuel, the
less there is and the slower the spread therefore decreasing both types of intensities.
Heat per Unit Area (HA) is the total heat released from a given area (kJ m 2). Heat per Unit Area is
a measurement of rate of spread and flame length.
The equation is HA = (60 IB) / R
IB is the fireline intensity (kJ m 1 s 1).
R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1).

South Carolina s Total Land Area Essay
. As of 2011, South Carolina has 13,120.5 acres of forestland. This is nearly 67% of the state s total
land area. Out of all of the forestland in South Carolina, 88% is privately owned. 63% of the
privately owned forestland is family owned. The average family owned forestland is 80 acres, and
around 56% of private forestowners live on their land. 12% of South Carolina s forestland is
publicly owned, or owned and managed by forest industries. These forest industries own nearly
137,400 acres. This number is down 93% from where it was in 2001, and it is continuing to decline.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the total area of forestland in South
Carolina slightly declined between 2011 and 2014. The 2014 estimate of forestland acreage in
South Carolina was 12,974.1. This showed a decrease of about 1.12%. This seems to contradict the
stats given by the South Carolina Forestry Association in 2015, which say that South Carolina s
forests contain 25 billion cubic feet of wood, which they say is more than at any time during the
last century. The South Carolina Forestry Association also says that South Carolina s hardwood
and softwood forests are both growing more wood than is able to be harvested. The United States
Department of Agriculture shows that the number of live trees on forestland in South Carolina
actually decreased by 4.1 percent from 2011 to 2014. The number of live trees decreased from 10.1

Is It Possible to Restore a Balance between the...
Recently everyone has started hearing the out cry surrounding the problem of the degradationof the
worlds ecosystems that have a negative effect on the biodiversity and the livelihoods of people
worldwide. People are beginning to realise that that these bio systems can not be conserved just
through the protection of critical areas alone.
A new solution whos potential hasn t been fully taken advantage of until now is ecological
restoration which is a process whereby not only the recovery of eco systems that have been
degraded damaged or destroyed are looked at but also the human influences that surround them.
In order for ecological restoration to be effective it needs to pay attention to four main aspects
namely:
Improvement of biodiversity conservation,
Improvement of the livelihoods of people,
The empowerment of the native and local people and
The improvement of the productivity of the ecosystems.
The difference between typical conservation where only the environment is considered and
ecological restoration is that it has the potential to make opportunities available not only to repair
the damage done to the ecosystems but also to improve the condition of the people involved in
rescuing it. Because people belive they are helping themselfs ecological restoration has been able
to alter the perspective of people in the local community, allowing new economic opportunities to
form aswel as the rejuvinaton of traditional cultural practices. In this way it can be seen

Analysis Of The Movie Monty Python And The Holy Grail
In class, we watched the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail . This movie is set in the time
of the middle ages (roughly 476 1453). It follows King Arthur and his knights as they search for
the Holy Grail. They look for the Holy Grail after they are told to by God. The movie at first may
seem like nonsense and a silly parody, but in reality, Monty Python and the Holy Graildemonstrates
the truth of the Middle Ages, feudal hierarchy, and other topics we have discussed in class.
In the Middle Ages, the Church was one of the most powerful forces. It was a very important
part of the people s culture and was a unifying force for them. It gave people a common belief,
protection and a sense of safety in a time of war. Many people relied on it to receive sacraments
and go to heaven, especially peasants because that was about all they had going for them. The
Church and it s matters were taken seriously and they maintained power throughout the Middle
Ages. In the movie, the power of the church is shown in many scenes. For example, in the scene
where King Arthur and his knights are trying to get into the cave but the rabbit is stopping them,
they call in the priests to give them the Holy Hand Grenade . The priests take it very seriously and
tell Arthur very specific instructions for it. He activates it and blows up the rabbit they are able to
enter the cave. This shows that they believed that the church and God had the most power and the
power to do anything. In a time of need, they turned to the Church.
The feudal system was the method of government that was used in the Middle Ages. The feudal
pyramid consisted of four levels, King at the top, Church Official and Nobles/Lords next, then
Knights, and peasants at the bottom. The King had the most power, the nobles were sometimes
vassals to the king, knights fought in the king s army, and peasants worked in the field all day
and were very poor. In one scene of the movie, peasants are seen working in the fields. They are
very dirty and have bad quality clothing which shows how little money and power they had
compared to King Arthur, who had fancy clothing and did not have to work. King Arthur then asks
the peasants who their lord is, which shows how lords or vassals

The Cultural Heritage Of Syria
I intend to concentrate on the cultural heritage of Syria throughout the duration of this report,
however the the massive losses in life and property incurred over the course of the now five year
long Civil War in Syria is a major factor in the discussion in regards to what remains, and what has
been destroyed, among Syrias tangible cultural heritage in the form of monuments, historical
architecture, and various other pieces of art1. The tangible heritage that remains in the region
effected by the Syrian Civil War is testament to thousands of years of culture, history and
civilization, which must be protected and efforts must be put forth in its preservation. However,
this heritage was built by the ancestors of those who have gone, and is a symbol of past peoples.
Those who remain however, are suffering from the onslaughts of both terrorist groups one one
hand, and are the victims of conflict between the Free Syrian Army and the forces of President
Bashar Al Asad2. It is a logistical and moral quagmire to divert and commit forces to either one or
the other, to protect them both from the destruction in the ongoing conflict. Should international
and local military focus and effort emphasize the protection of priceless artifacts that are
irreplaceable assets for the Syrian people and the world at large? Or should focus instead be
diverted to protecting internally displaced persons in the region, as well as those entrenched in
areas with intense fighting?

Horses act without worry for their actions. Flaubert describes Rodolphe as having trampled on
horses dung (86). Rodolphe unknowingly steps in the excrement from the horse. This mimics horses
in their careless nature, not concerning themselves with what they step in. The horses, like
Rodolphe, act carelessly in where they step and move. As Rodolphe and Emma ride together the

Emma resembles a horse in her mannerisms. She threw back her white neck (113). Flaubert

Criminal behaviour has been so constant in movies that are the following genre of a greater
understanding of crime in film: thriller, action, suspense, mystery, detective, prison, film noir and
the most modern heist. The crime genre started with one main sub genre, and that was the
gangsta genre. The crime genre appeals to a mainstream and diverse audiences because of all
the elements of the film. Firstly, the action elements of the films which include shoot outs and
car chases appeal to the mainstream audience. The action sequence are very important to the
mainstream audience as they want to see the spectacle .Secondly, the A list actors, who are

She creates a persona of an earnest and humble individual to appeal to her audience. By sharing
likenesses with her intended readers and communicating a true generous Christian tone, she
enhances her persuasiveness. Throughout the entire passage, she establishes a friendly voice by
using terms that communicate a gentle, friendly feeling. For example, she states that she wrote to
the specific audience of Christian women because she felt a deep and tender interest in your present
and eternal welfare. The terms deep, tender, and welfare emulate the feeling of a caring mother.
Through her tone, ethos, and language, she attempted to build trust with the audience from
paragraph 1. She took on this position when attempting to lead her fellow Christians.

Essay about The Inner-City Problems and Solving Them
The Inner City Problems and Solving Them
There are many problems that can be clearly seen in the inner city. Problems such as crime, poor
housing (perhaps slums), and
unemployment are all apparent. However unemployment levels are gradually dropping. Lack of
money gives rise to the
problems so are often seen in the lower class areas of cities.
On the whole the perception of the inner city areas has the image of poverty and overcrowding
which faces many cities across
Britain today in whatever proportion. The first as such it the Economic which inner city areas have
long suffered due to lack of
investment especially after the 1940 s when a lot of money was put into New Towns. Many of...

Issues in British inner city estates
There is increasing evidence that poverty, unemployment and social stress are all now seen in
British Inner Cities. There are
many problems which the areas face, both physically and even in some cases mentally:
1.the physical fabric of the buildings, many originally built using cheap materials and methods, is
deteriorating rapidly.
However the councils are trying to upgrade these poor housing conditions gradually.
2.Many inner city areas include high rise buildings which have created feelings or isolation and
stress related illnesses.
3.The low level or car ownership and high bus fares have increased the feeling of isolation from
jobs, shops and
entertainment.
4.Levels of unemployment often exceed 30%. There are also low income families; many elderly
living on small pensions.
5.The environment quality of the areas are poor, often with the lack of open space.
6.The inner city tend to have high levels of marital problems, drug taking, petty crime and
vandalism and low levels of
academic attainment and aspiration.
We can see quite clearly from above the poor conditions that face Britain s poorer people, these
factors having to be dealt with.
However the young are partly to blame for the poor conditions (mainly sites) which surround the
people. They play the part in

My School Day
The school dismissal bell has just rung and I walk slowly towards the back of the building
towards the athletic wing. As I walk towards the trophy case, I am walking by memory because i
am distracted by my own thoughts floating through my head of all the things I need to do before
the day ends. My ends go back to focus and I find myself with the rest of my cross country team.
Today is Tuesday, and we have a meet. Tuesday is the longest day of my week. After going to
school for seven hours, I have to travel to a park to run five kilometers in a face paced
environment. I then come back nearly dusk, and finally go home where my schoolwork awaits.
After being up and going for have the day I am fine with sitting down for a few hours to
complete my assignments. The whole team is now changed into their uniforms and there is now
a line of girls braiding one another s hair. We wait for the call of our coach to arrive and for the first
glimpse of our bus. As we wait many girls are proactive on one side of the table trying to complete
some of their homework while the other end of the table discusses their school day and the events
that took place whether if it was seeing their crush or complaining about their spanish teacher
giving them too much work. I varied each time whether I wanted to get ahead of my work or I just
wanted to talk to a friend to discharge all my worries.
The bus is here! a girl shouts. I close my book thankful for a break in my studies and knowing that

Site Plan | I. Neurons/nerve cells A neuron is a cell specialized to conduct electrochemical impulses
called nerve impulses or action potentials. Neuron is the main cellular component of the nervous
system, a specialized type of cell that integrates electrochemical activity of the other neurons that
are connected to it and that propagates that integrated activity to other neurons. They are the basic
information processing structures in the CNS. There are as many as 10,000 specific types of

Nerve conduction studies are now routine, and can be done in virtually any hospital equipped with
the appropriate machine and staffed with a qualified examiner. The nerve conduction study utilizes
a computer, computer monitor, amplifier, loudspeaker, electrical stimulator, and filters. These
filters are mathematical filters that can distinguish random, background electrical signals from
the signal produced by an activated nerve. When the study is done, small electrodes are placed
on the skin over the muscles being tested. Generally, these muscles are located in the arms or legs.
Some of the electrodes are designed to record the electrical signal that passes by them. Other
electrodes (reference electrodes) are designed to monitor the quality of the signals to make sure
that the test is operating properly. If monitoring of the test is not done, then the results obtained are
meaningless. After the electrodes are in place, a small electrical current can be applied to the skin.
The electrical stimulation is usually done at several points along the nerve, not just at a single
point. This is done because conduction of an impulse through a nerve is not uniform. Some regions
of a nerve conduct more slowly than other regions. By positioning the stimulating electrodes at
several sites, a more accurate overall measurement of conduction velocity is obtained. The electrical
current activates nerves in the

Typography And The Printing Press
1. Typography Typography, according to Preece and Wells, is the design or selection of letter
forms to be organized into words and sentences for printing upon a page. Furthermore, the practice
of typography goes beyond the creation of the type or the font. According to Preece and Wells,
typography includes paper selection, the choice of ink to be used in printing, the printing method,
and the binding process in cases where the printed material is a book. Although the use of
typography became drastically more popular during the invention of the printing pressin the mid
fifteenth century, the use of typography goes beyond this period in history. Before the invention of
the concept of typography, writingwas already a popular form of visual communication, the history
of which dates to the use of hieroglyphs or pictograms in ancient times (Siebert). Per John Siebert,
before the invention of the printing press which revolutionized the practice of typography, the
alphabets, and phonographic writing, these ancient forms of writing were used by civilizations to
express their ideas. The very first recorded examples of written communication were the ancient
cave paintings dating back around 20,000 years; however, the first forms of formal writing were
invented by the Sumerians around 3500 B.C (Siebert). According to John Siebert, ancient writing
systems grew more complex as civilizations began to advance. Ancient Egyptians incorporated
symbols and ideograms into their structures

Patrick Slush Descriptive Writing
There is nothing more terribly beautiful than the snow stricken streets of New York City.
Beneath a greying evening sky, and between tall buildings of steel, are big flakes of swirling
snow that drift and lightly cover every street lamp, branch, shoulder and patch of pavement
untouched by moving feet. Patrick Sole, a man without a home, is slumped, in wet, grey slush,
against a brick wall. He does not twitch, he does not tremble. And if white begins to blanket his
tattered coat, and if his frostnipped fingers begin to numb; well, he does not stir. For how long he
has sat there, he does not know, for he looks and feels as white as a ghost.
With an icy puff of breath, Patrick blinks slowly and blankly observes the blur of faces before
him. As the evening sky blackens, the bustle of the street grows noisier and is lit vividly by street
lamps, lights, cars and electronic billboards. It is at that moment Patrick wonders: how can one be
so lonely in a city with over nineteen million souls?

weighing him down and filling his chest. It would appear so that if his heart were to collapse
under the weight, then an avalanche of his pain would fall and crush the entire city. But it won t,

Elizabeth is thought to be one of the greatest queens in history. She faced much controversy
because of her parents and being a bastard child of King Henry VIII. Elizabeth: The Virgin
Queen, starring Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth is a portrayal of the life that was thought to
be lead by Queen Elizabeth. The movie shows Elizabeth in the coming months before she
becomes queen and her first few years as a ruler. In the movie, Elizabeth is presented as a fun
loving young woman who is not bothered by her stance in society as the bastard child of a king.

artificial chymotrypsin with the binding site of cyclodextrin with the catalytic site of an

and because of this knowledge surrounding the mechanism is limited. The crystallography data
shows the proposed mechanism involves three main molecules in the active site. These are serine

Lemur 3 Research Paper
The Lemur 3 robot designed by NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) can takes advantage of
the same attractive forces that geckoes use to climb walls in order to perform tasks on the outside
walls of the International Space Station (ISS).
NASA envisions a day when its lizard robots may climb the walls of the ISS using grippers
inspired from nature. The Lemur 3 s feet will simulate the super adhesive feet of geckoes.
Scientists at the NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California are developing
an innovative gecko gripper system that will allow robots to perform maintenance tasks in outer
space. They will inspect and repair the space station s exterior, as well as conduct a wide range of
space activities in Earth orbit. Recently, the American space agency has also released a video
describing the gecko space robot concept.

The gecko gripper robot Lemur 3 will work in pretty much the same way as the real gecko,
according to Parness. The team working on the project has created a material studded with synthetic
hairs much smaller than a human hair. This material adheres when it is pushed against a surface.
According to JPL engineers, the latest generation of grippers developed by their team can support
more than 150 Newtons of force. This numbers are big enough for the maintenance work tasks of
the future space robots, being the equivalent of 35 lbs. (16 kilograms).
The advantage of this gripping system over the tape is that it doesn t lose its stickiness over time
the way tape does. The researchers explained that this system should work well in all environments,
including the extreme conditions in the outer space. The gripping system developed by JPL team
will be able to withstand extreme pressures, temperatures, and

Public Speaking Speech Essay
If someone asked me what are the hardest experiences I ve ever had to go through, my top three
would be my esophageal surgery, volleyball conditioning, and public speaking. Naturally, I m a

Public speaking goes against everything I am because it asks me to speak to a larger audience

Even though my topic was interesting, it isn t something everyone would know about off hand.
What inspired me to deliver a speech on green iguanas was my mother and my heritage. My mom

Gender Aspects Of Gender And Gender Role Development
Unfortunately, young girls and boys are given very different ideas of expectations, guidelines
and messages about their genders, which cause strain and hierarchies for both genders. When
playing, girls are more likely to play with toys that are neutral or considered masculine, and
usually not be bullied or negatively judged to a serious extent. Young males experience a very
strict set of expectations that if not followed, they receive negative life consequences and
negative reinforcement, such as bullying. If a boy chooses activities or actions that are feminine
it is punishable by disapproval by peers, family, and society (O Brien et al, 2000). As young as
preschool age, boys are more likely to choose toys and activities that are masculine and they begin
to exhibit a strict belief in typical boy like gendered behavior. Apart from parents, peer and one s
friend group influence a major part in the gender roledevelopment throughout all stages of
adolescence. Around the age there is often an increase in this behavior. Starting from age five,
boys tend to mingle within a crowd, and take part in group activities, whereas, girls prefer
solitude or small groups of two or three people (Santrock, 2009). They develop a strong sense of
what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior and activities for their sex and opposite sex. The
practice of introducing stereotypes and genderroles early in life causes sexism, aggression, gender
role conflict, and a new generation of people

illegal activities and took bribes. Mustafamond made sure that no one could really think on their
own and challenge his rule which is wrong due to the fact he is deliberately keeping people in
the dark and dumber just so he isn t threatened by someone taking over. Mustapha Mond s anger
gave place almost at once to mirth. The idea of this creature solemnly lecturing him him about
the social order was really too grotesque. The man must have gone mad. I ought to give him a
lesson, he said to himself; then threw back his head and laughed aloud. For the moment, at any

I will analyse the cost to the music industry of internet piracy over the last decade, Quantify and
qualify the argument that an illegal download is equal to one song purchased. I will use the
statistical and financial data from the RAII and other authorities to outline my findings.
Also I will controversially conclude whether the music industry is benefiting from music piracy,
whether the music industry is now an open market business, and the attitude of artists to an open
market compared to that of their record labels and the RAII copyright authority.
3 Overview
3.1 The Definition of Internet Piracy and the Damage it causes
The term internet piracy has been around for the last decade, describing the illegal activity of
downloading and sharing copyrighted material freely. The Recording Industry Association of
America warns companies and consumers about the threat of internet piracy:
Music theft is a real, on going and evolving challenge. Both the volume of music acquired illegally
without paying for it and the resulting drop in revenues are staggering. Digital sales, while on the
rise, are not making up the difference (RIAA, 2012)
In 2007 the Institute for Policy and Innovation estimated that the total cost of Internet Piracy,
specifically to the music industry, is costing the US economy over $12 billion a year:
As a consequence of global and U.S. based piracy of sound recordings, the U.S. economy loses

  • 2. Nathaniel Hawthorne s Puritan influences Nathaniel Hawthorne was born into a family that possessed prominent Puritan ancestors, and the shame he experienced as a result of their actions, as well as his odd fascination with them, had a significant impact on his life and his writings. Though it would be an overstatement to say that Hawthorne s knowledge of the Puritanway of life was his only source of inspiration, this knowledge was certainly influential as it is often reflected in the majority of his work. Born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804, Hawthorne was born in a town whose Puritan past is well known as a result of the infamous Salem witch trials. Though he was born well after the time of the Puritans, growing up in a town so steeped in Puritan history is likely why... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One important, though briefly mentioned, symbol of Hester and Dimmesdale s growth occurs when Pearl receives a golden chain from a shipmaster. This chain is described as becoming a part of her. The chain itself can be seen as a symbol of the golden link between heaven and Earth. When Pearl takes and wears the golden chain, it is shown that she, and her parents, have been redeemed because they have learned so much as a result of their sin (Manheim 3). The Scarlet Letter was surely inspired in part by Hawthorne s Puritan ancestors as he was criticizing their cruelty by displaying Hester and Dimmesdale as kind people who made a mistake and became better people as a result. The novel also has a more modern lesson because being overly critical of others is a problem that has always plagued humanity. This is part of the reason why The Scarlet Letter is such an important work of American literature as its comments on a harsh society are still fairly relevant. In addition to his many novels, Hawthorne wrote many short stories like The Minister s Black Veil. Published in 1836, The Minister s Black Veil is about a minister named Reverend Hooper who begins to wear a black veil over his face. Throughout the story the townspeople are frightened by his actions and the reason why he is wearing the black ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Scientific Lens Anything that can be explained by science is treated as a known truth. There is a bias within the scientific community based on the assumption that the public is uninformed, and scientist are purveyors of facts (Bartell 7). Science and folklore have typically had a tumultuous relationship as the scientific community attempts to re interpret phenomena previously explained by folklore and /or supernatural mysticism as logical results of scientifically understood processes (Jordan 8). The goal of interpreting the supernatural through a scientific lens is reflected in popular culture. I believe that film and television mix sciencewith supernatural themes because science is such a prominent aspect of modern society so it invokes feelings... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the episode there are a variety of technology used to help the investigators prove that there is a ghost present. Grant Wilson, the co founder of TAPS hopes to prove that paranormal investigation is a worthwhile science ( Altoona Tantrum. ). The team utilizes a lot of high tech equipment when investigating a haunt. They typically must adapt equipment used for other purposes to fit their paranormal needs. Some of the devices they use include: wireless cameras, electronic voice phenomena (EVP) devices and electronic magnetic field (EMF) devices. It seems that the primary goal for many of the investigators and those who watch the show is to gain physical, recorded evidence that either confirms or denies the existence of ghost and therefore proves the existence of life after death. The use of technology takes a subject that may be viewed as nonsense or irrational and grounds it in modern society. Eaton writes that [o]n the surface, use of technology appear[s] to be solely driven by a desire to accumulate empirical data for scientific purposes. However, this reliance on technology drew upon the legitimacy of scientific discourse (Eaton 406). This episode blended science and religion while dealing with the paranormal. The team investigated using the equipment described above, but they also had one of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The True Face of Unethical Humor Following Chaucer s description of the Miller in the General Prologue, The Miller s Tale reveals that the Miller is more complex than his appearance initially suggests. Given its bawdy and humorous nature, the Miller s story consists of events of cuckoldry, foolishness, and secrets (1720, 1718, and 1719). As the teller of such a tale, the Miller would immediately be classified as a crude man, interested only in the physical appeal of women. However, as the tale unfolds, it imparts the Miller s unexpected empathy as he commiserates with Alison, who is trapped by the norms of society. The Miller s story portrays not only the Miller s expected vulgar and deceptive characteristics but also his surprisingly sympathetic nature.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Miller displays complete apathy for the norms of society through his satire of the metaphysical Knight and clergyman. Furthermore, the Miller s bawdy nature progressively worsens as he initially begins with his songs of prostitution and later describes a woman s private areas, an action of atrocious audacity and low thinking, but he asserts is noble (1718). Thus, in his bawdy rebellion, the Miller solely focuses on his lewd tale, disregarding the norms of society. The Miller s deceptive qualities influence the characters actions in his story. During his pilgrimage with the Miller, Chaucer discovers the habits of the golden thumb Miller and describes him as a fox (1712). The Miller would cheat people by steal[ing] corn and charg[ing] for it three times (1712). The Miller s characters also use guile as frequently as the Miller does. In their affair, both Nicholas and Alison devise a plan to trick the jealous John. While speaking to John alone, Nicholas warns him of a flood to come and states he must not waste words on the wise; however, Nicholas tricks the so called wise carpenter and has intercourse with John s wife after John falls asleep (1727). Furthermore, Absolom begs for a kiss from Alison, but she beard[s] him, another instance of bawdy deceit (1730). Thus, the Miller s disposition of treachery propels his characters in their misdemeanors, exemplifying his immoral nature; however, every apple on the tree is not rotten. ... Enemies of the United States are no longer only other nations, but also terrorist groups, which operate transnationally and even between continents. On the night of September 11th, in the aftermath of the deadliest terror attack the world has seen, former President George W. • 7. Food Changes In Ancient China During Ancient China, some things were the same as they are today in present China. For example, they still grow and eat foods like rice, shellfish, fruits, and onions. In addition to this, people eat foods divided into yin and yang categories due to Taoism beliefs. Yin included foods that grew in the air. For example, fruits that grew on trees like peaches, wine, and citrons. Yang foods were normally grown underground. For instance, onion and garlic were yang foods that were grown underground. As time goes on, usually there is change happening as well. This happens anywhere one goes. Whether there are huge adjustments or small modifications, they are all differences. In Chinathere were changes in foodproduction and farming. By contrast of the foods that remained constant, there were practices in Ancient China that have been improved. For example, when farming, human labor was needed. • 8. Racial Illusions In The Movie Sam Dawson is a single father, who has a developmental disability but is well adjusted to society. Although, Sam often encounters limitations due to his mental disability, nevertheless he is able to take care of Lucy. Sadly, his life deviates when Lucy turned eight and a judge assume that Mr. Dawson was not competent to care for Lucy s wellbeing. It was not until the family court realized that it was in Lucy s best interest to reside with her dad. The film shows a contrast in Sam idea of being a decent father and the perspective of the government system. The language, images, and themes used in the film to portray Sam as a childlike, lacking basic scholastic skills, who is not capable of fulfilling his parental obligations. The government only sees Sam s disability and the limitations he would place on Lucy. Sadly, the movie leaves a taste of dissatisfaction because negativity and judgement are the prominent feeling towards Sam and his situation and these judgements only enforce the idea of Sam not being a capable father. Throughout the movie, language was used as a form of limitation and segregation towards Sam. Everyone was aware that Sam had the intellectual capacity of a seven year old, which meant that he could hold primitive conversations and had minimal knowledge, through this lack of diction and knowledge it was possible for the court able to exemplify the risk of having a person with disability raise a young girl. • 9. feminaw Feminist Reading of Kate Chopin s The Awakening... A Feminist Reading of The Awakening The Awakening is not new to me. However, in the class when I read it before the instructor refused to entertain a feminist criticism. The theory presented was that Edna knew what kind of man she was marrying and all these things she went through: her friendship with Madame Reisz leaving the house, entertaining her friends at the party, her situation with Robert and Arobin were all selfish efforts toward the ultimate freedom which is death. I feel Chopin faults Leonce as much as Edna for Edna s problems. He is a cold fish. He is controlling and he puts on a show for friends and neighbors proving he is a model husband which he is not. She befriends people and then chooses to ignore them. Her final big party is her final farewell. She brings out all the sensuousness that her reserve had kept her from expressing and enjoying. Everything pleasing to the senses is there for her guests. There are colors, textures, tastes, and sounds for the senses to luxuriate. But all this sensory enhancements doesn t keep her attention. She feels the same old ennui, and the party shortly thereafter breaks up. Of course, all this meets with Leonce disapproval. His concern is not about his wife s mental or emotional health, but rather, what people will say. To experience freedom of the soul Edna has no choice but to return to the sea. It is the only thing capable of giving her the emotional security and sensual satisfaction at the same time. She goes to it and allows it to claim her. Like many of Chopin s stories, The Awakeningends in a death. Chopin apparently sees death as the ultimate freedom. No matter what we do as women in this world we are always restricted in our movements by some facet of our lives. While Chopin tries to speak for women, I think this premise that our lives are restricted also applies to men. There may not be as many restrictions but they are there. • 10. The Effects Of Climate Change On Development And The... Human survival is dependent on myriad things, the first of which that come to mind are food, water and shelter. As the world has developed, the abundance of each of these has increased dramatically, especially in the developed world. However, along with this growing population and resource web has come a growing understanding of disease, and its impacts on the more developed and less developed parts of the world. Another effect of growing population is the concerning truth of climate change: changes in climate not only alter the environment, but can alter the range and distribution of diseases. Moreover, human population leads inherently to social networks and systems that can have significant impact on development and the spread of disease. These impacts can manifest as civil strife, or simply the unavoidable reality of proximity within a community. Lea Berrang Ford, an Associate Professor at McGill University, has conducted numerous studies over the past approximately fifteen years that blend together the complex aspects of disease spread in general, choosing to focus mostly on African trypanosomiasisor sleeping sickness , and how climatic and social pressures affect the spread of disease. Her work also extends beyond her own research, into her classroom, and through her students, out into the world. Berrang Ford earned her first degree, a BS in Environmental Geography, from the University of Guleph in 2000. She then went on to earn an MS in Environmental Change and ... Although the initial cost might seem expensive, the overall costs of ensuring delivery of quality products and services might prove to be less than expected. There are four ways in which quality assurance and control can affect a company, and they are: productivity, profitability, cost, and customer satisfaction. Poor quality costs organization money in terms of productivity problems. If an organization uses low quality parts and materials, systems will break down, even if of any high quality parts or materials are also used. Low quality parts and materials can cause mechanical breakdowns and failure, as well as slowing down the flow of work or even bringing work to a halt. Improving productivity and quality in an organization usually results in increased customer and employee contentment. If an organization implements and uses the quality management system techniques such as cost analysis, process mapping, and benchmarking, they can attain regular improvement in all work flow processes. Improved production will results in fewer deficiencies, fewer delays and reduced costs. With improved productivity within an organization it leads to increases profitability. Both placed a heavy focus on color theory, which is believed to be the most important aspect for a career as a painter. The two of them were able to develop their own dot painting styles and both were heavily criticized for their newly invented techniques. Seurat was accused of being a cold blooded mystifyer by one critic of his time. With exaggerated titles such as The Energy Of Explosions 24 Billion Years B.C. The pigs see these traits and exploit them for their own interests. When Napoleon becomes the leader of the farm, Boxer, voiced the general feeling by the saying: If Comrade Napoleon says it, it must be right. • 26. 1.1 Explain The Difference Between Fire Intensity And... 1.1Explain (using words) how each of these three is calculated and identify the primary variable(s) used in the calculations. Describe how these variables cause this influence. Fireline intensity (IB) the rate of heat released over a set distance by the actively flaming front of the fire (kW/m). It is calculated by measuring the weight of the fuel burned and the rate of spread. The equation is IB = w h R w is the weight of the fuel consumed by the fire (kg m 2). h is the low fuel heat content and is a constant. 18260 kJ kg 1 = h R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1). The weight of the fuel and the rate of spread affect fire intensity by increasing or decreasing it, which in turn affects the fireline intensity. The heavier the fuel is, the more there is and the faster the spread therefore increasing both the fire intensity and fireline intensity. The lighter the fuel, the less there is and the slower the spread therefore decreasing both types of intensities. Heat per Unit Area (HA) is the total heat released from a given area (kJ m 2). Heat per Unit Area is a measurement of rate of spread and flame length. The equation is HA = (60 IB) / R IB is the fireline intensity (kJ m 1 s 1). R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1). • 34. Analysis Of The Movie Monty Python And The Holy Grail In class, we watched the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail . This movie is set in the time of the middle ages (roughly 476 1453). It follows King Arthur and his knights as they search for the Holy Grail. They look for the Holy Grail after they are told to by God. The movie at first may seem like nonsense and a silly parody, but in reality, Monty Python and the Holy Graildemonstrates the truth of the Middle Ages, feudal hierarchy, and other topics we have discussed in class. In the Middle Ages, the Church was one of the most powerful forces. It was a very important part of the people s culture and was a unifying force for them. It gave people a common belief, protection and a sense of safety in a time of war. Many people relied on it to receive sacraments and go to heaven, especially peasants because that was about all they had going for them. The Church and it s matters were taken seriously and they maintained power throughout the Middle Ages. In the movie, the power of the church is shown in many scenes. For example, in the scene where King Arthur and his knights are trying to get into the cave but the rabbit is stopping them, they call in the priests to give them the Holy Hand Grenade . The priests take it very seriously and tell Arthur very specific instructions for it. He activates it and blows up the rabbit they are able to enter the cave. This shows that they believed that the church and God had the most power and the power to do anything. In a time of need, they turned to the Church. The feudal system was the method of government that was used in the Middle Ages. The feudal pyramid consisted of four levels, King at the top, Church Official and Nobles/Lords next, then Knights, and peasants at the bottom. The King had the most power, the nobles were sometimes vassals to the king, knights fought in the king s army, and peasants worked in the field all day and were very poor. In one scene of the movie, peasants are seen working in the fields. They are very dirty and have bad quality clothing which shows how little money and power they had compared to King Arthur, who had fancy clothing and did not have to work. King Arthur then asks the peasants who their lord is, which shows how lords or vassals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Cultural Heritage Of Syria I intend to concentrate on the cultural heritage of Syria throughout the duration of this report, however the the massive losses in life and property incurred over the course of the now five year long Civil War in Syria is a major factor in the discussion in regards to what remains, and what has been destroyed, among Syrias tangible cultural heritage in the form of monuments, historical architecture, and various other pieces of art1. The tangible heritage that remains in the region effected by the Syrian Civil War is testament to thousands of years of culture, history and civilization, which must be protected and efforts must be put forth in its preservation. However, this heritage was built by the ancestors of those who have gone, and is a symbol of past peoples. Those who remain however, are suffering from the onslaughts of both terrorist groups one one hand, and are the victims of conflict between the Free Syrian Army and the forces of President Bashar Al Asad2. It is a logistical and moral quagmire to divert and commit forces to either one or the other, to protect them both from the destruction in the ongoing conflict. Should international and local military focus and effort emphasize the protection of priceless artifacts that are irreplaceable assets for the Syrian people and the world at large? Or should focus instead be diverted to protecting internally displaced persons in the region, as well as those entrenched in areas with intense fighting? It is important to ... The nerve conduction study utilizes a computer, computer monitor, amplifier, loudspeaker, electrical stimulator, and filters. These filters are mathematical filters that can distinguish random, background electrical signals from the signal produced by an activated nerve. When the study is done, small electrodes are placed on the skin over the muscles being tested. Generally, these muscles are located in the arms or legs. Some of the electrodes are designed to record the electrical signal that passes by them. Other electrodes (reference electrodes) are designed to monitor the quality of the signals to make sure that the test is operating properly. If monitoring of the test is not done, then the results obtained are meaningless. After the electrodes are in place, a small electrical current can be applied to the skin. The electrical stimulation is usually done at several points along the nerve, not just at a single point. This is done because conduction of an impulse through a nerve is not uniform. Typography Typography, according to Preece and Wells, is the design or selection of letter forms to be organized into words and sentences for printing upon a page. Per John Siebert, before the invention of the printing press which revolutionized the practice of typography, the alphabets, and phonographic writing, these ancient forms of writing were used by civilizations to express their ideas. The very first recorded examples of written communication were the ancient cave paintings dating back around 20,000 years; however, the first forms of formal writing were invented by the Sumerians around 3500 B.C (Siebert). Public speaking goes against everything I am because it asks me to speak to a larger audience when I prefer one on one conversations. Then, it puts me under severe physical and emotional duress and makes me feel exhausted as if I just ran a mile. Lastly, I get so nervous that my body begins shaking uncontrollably because adrenaline rushes throughout my... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Luckily, I was able to perform my entire speech around five to six minutes which was a goal I had struggled to obtain in practice. To hasten my speech, I had to talk a lot faster and remove a lot of specific information from my speech. Despite it being a success, some people thought I talked to fast during my presentation which could have been true. All in all, my speech topic was well fitted to the role and was inspired by my personal experiences. Even though my topic was interesting, it isn t something everyone would know about off hand. What inspired me to deliver a speech on green iguanas was my mother and my heritage. My mom is Puerto Rican and that makes me half Puerto Rican. I am very proud of my heritage, so every once and a while I like to learn more about Puerto Rico. When I visited Puerto Rico a couple years ago with my family, it was a life changing experience. Despite the language barrier, I got to meet a lot of my relatives for the first time. It was amazing seeing my mom as our interpreter on the trip. Because of that vacation I became closer to my family than I had before. I was growing up and it was nice sharing the experience with them. While we were there my mom warned us about the lizard problem in Puerto Rico. At first, I thought she was exaggerating, but as we went around the island I saw that it was bigger and more real than I ever believed. Our first night there, as we drove, I could see lizard carcasses all over the road. After getting off our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. Gender Aspects Of Gender And Gender Role Development Unfortunately, young girls and boys are given very different ideas of expectations, guidelines and messages about their genders, which cause strain and hierarchies for both genders. When playing, girls are more likely to play with toys that are neutral or considered masculine, and usually not be bullied or negatively judged to a serious extent. Young males experience a very strict set of expectations that if not followed, they receive negative life consequences and negative reinforcement, such as bullying. If a boy chooses activities or actions that are feminine it is punishable by disapproval by peers, family, and society (O Brien et al, 2000). As young as preschool age, boys are more likely to choose toys and activities that are masculine and they begin to exhibit a strict belief in typical boy like gendered behavior. Apart from parents, peer and one s friend group influence a major part in the gender roledevelopment throughout all stages of adolescence. Around the age there is often an increase in this behavior. Starting from age five, boys tend to mingle within a crowd, and take part in group activities, whereas, girls prefer solitude or small groups of two or three people (Santrock, 2009). They develop a strong sense of what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior and activities for their sex and opposite sex. The practice of introducing stereotypes and genderroles early in life causes sexism, aggression, gender role conflict, and a new generation of people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 57. Civilization In Brave New World Mustapha Mond In the books Jungle book: Mowgli s brothers and brave new world, and Batman Year One. They both have civilization vs savagery with soma changing the perception of the citizens of New World and letting them be carefree and party on their soma vacations while the reservation lives a simple life. In the story Mowglis brother the theme civilization versus savagery is shown with how the wolves use the rock council to make important decisions that affect all so everyone has a voice which is same as our democracy while Shere Khan does what he pleases. In BatmanYear One the city of Gotham is out of control and corrupted while Batman and Dective Gordan try to keep the civilized ways and help the people of the city. The differences between civilization... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Batman year one this corruption is present as well throughout the story. Gotham city was basically run on favors and funding from the rich to the politician. The police department wasn t any better the police commissioner and most of the force was corrupted they were involved in illegal activities and took bribes. Mustafamond made sure that no one could really think on their own and challenge his rule which is wrong due to the fact he is deliberately keeping people in the dark and dumber just so he isn t threatened by someone taking over. Mustapha Mond s anger gave place almost at once to mirth. The idea of this creature solemnly lecturing him him about the social order was really too grotesque. The man must have gone mad. I ought to give him a lesson, he said to himself; then threw back his head and laughed aloud. For the moment, at any rate, the lesson would not be given. (11.36). Mustapha Mond believed he was the smartest man every which is why he treated john with such disrespect the way he acts is so un human he treats him as if he is a little kid not a grown man with the way he talks to him. In Batman the police commissioner feels that he is untouchable when it comes to being punished by the law. He creates his citizens in a very strange manner he creates them in tubes which is insane people don t get to raise kids they don t get advice from their parents it s crazy. They citizens are lab rats basically they aren t created by two people who love each other they are made by one savage man who likes to be in total control. The thing is instead of people facing the truth like most civilized people would do they take soma which is a drug that gives the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I will analyse the cost to the music industry of internet piracy over the last decade, Quantify and qualify the argument that an illegal download is equal to one song purchased. I will use the statistical and financial data from the RAII and other authorities to outline my findings. Also I will controversially conclude whether the music industry is benefiting from music piracy, whether the music industry is now an open market business, and the attitude of artists to an open market compared to that of their record labels and the RAII copyright authority. 3 Overview 3.1 The Definition of Internet Piracy and the Damage it causes The term internet piracy has been around for the last decade, describing the illegal activity of downloading and sharing copyrighted material freely. The Recording Industry Association of America warns companies and consumers about the threat of internet piracy: Music theft is a real, on going and evolving challenge. Both the volume of music acquired illegally without paying for it and the resulting drop in revenues are staggering. Digital sales, while on the rise, are not making up the difference (RIAA, 2012) In 2007 the Institute for Policy and Innovation estimated that the total cost of Internet Piracy, specifically to the music industry, is costing the US economy over $12 billion a year: As a consequence of global and U.S. based piracy of sound recordings, the U.S. economy loses $12.5 ...
