In the 1800 s Honoka a was the home of plantation workers, however, today there are no longer any
plantations located on the Big Island. What once was a community united through diversity, over
time the challenges the community has faced have caused it to drastically change. While no
industry currently exists on the Hamakua coast, the lack of job opportunities have caused distress
among community members, leading to unemployment or the need to commute to distant locations
around the island. The fight for jobs may have been a leading cause towards the lack of union

school, I found out about scholarships and how they can really help students of parents with low

Depression. The Great Depression was caused by the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Will Rogers,

In the 1930 s the people of America turned to John Steinbeck to understand and relate to the
hardships of the Depression. John Steinbeck was most famous for writing Of Mice and Men which
references the Great Depression. Another one of his novels is about the Great Depression, it is
called The Grapes of Wrath. The Grapes of Wrath was about the lack of jobs, food, and money in
Oklahoma. The trials that the people went through were scary. People from all over the country
read The Grapes of Wrath. The Story of Oklahoma states that sophisticated New Yorkers had

$490 million dollar plan In California there is frequent debate over the performance of public
schools throughout the state. It is known that many of the state s public schools are poorly funded
and lay in disrepair. It is also accompanied by bad test scores and underperforming students which
is not necessarily the schools fault. Article one discusses a possible solution with an ambitious $490
million plan to place half of Los Angeles students into charter schools within the next eight years.
Charter schools are publicly financed, independently run and are exempt from some of the rules
that govern other traditional campuses. Details of the plan have yet to be released but the major
contributors include the locally based Eli and Edyth Broad Foundation along with the Keck and
Walton Family Foundations and other charter advocates. The proposed plan would create 260 new
charter schools and enroll at least 130,000 students (Blume 2015). The foundations have publicly
declined to release important information on the policy but apparently have a strategy in place for
moving forward, including the recruitment and training of teachers and how to raise money. The
plan has already encountered a lot of resistance from the powerful L.A. Unified unions. Critics of
