Immigration And The United States
Immigration is one of the most heated topics in the U.S. political and social agenda and usually evokes
strong polar opinions in the American society, in part due to its complex composition of peoples and
cultures. It is precisely due to this fact, that the interpreters and translators working in the field of
Immigration must be familiar not only with the basic types of immigration hearings, but have an
understanding of the history of Immigration in the United States, different types of visas and statuses
as well as paths to Permanent Residency and Citizenship.
This Unit will provide you with the condensed knowledge of the main events in the United States
history, explain the difference between the numerous types of visas and inform you ... Show more

1. HISTORY OF IMMIGRATION
The United States of America has a rich immigration history, dating back to the 18th century, where
there were virtually no immigration restrictions, making the U.S. a kaleidoscope of ethnic and cultural
groups it is today. Following the Civil War, several U.S. states made initial attempts in regulating
immigration, which led to the 1875 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to make the immigration a
federal responsibility, thus launching a chain of Immigration laws and regulations leading us to today.
The first immigration law, the Page Act of 1875 (aka the Asian Exclusion Act) was passed in 1875 and
prohibited the importation of Asian contract workers, any Asian women who would engage in
prostitution and everybody who is considered to be a convict in their own county. The Page Act of
1875 was followed by the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited Chinese contract laborers to
immigrate to the United States, as well as Alien Contract Labor laws of 1885 and 1887, both of which
broadened the laborers exclusion list.
Soon after, the increasingly complex immigration laws established by the federal government led to
the creation of the Office of the Superintendent of Immigration within the Treasure Department. The
newly organized government office inspected, admitted or rejected as well as processed all the newly
arriving immigrants.
January 2nd, 1892 marked the opening of the famous immigration station located on Ellis Island in the

Switching Technology For A Network
Switching Technology
Cassandra Anton
Bellevue University Abstract
Switching is a technology that has been used since the first communication networks were invented.
In order to understand switching, we must first discuss switches. A switch is a device that connects
other devices on a network. Switches can also prevent bad packets from spreading by not forwarding
them on. While switches can be helpful to a network they should not be seen as an instant fix for
network issues. There are many benefits to using network switching in a network. A switch can break
one large network into smaller networks so that the distance limitations are restarted. By creating the
smaller networks traffic is isolated, reducing collisions. It can ... Show more content on

In a full switched network, hubs are not used. Instead, switches are used with a dedicated segment for
every node. In this type of network the switch picks up every transmission before it reaches another
node. Since any segment only reaches a single node, the frame only reaches the intended recipient.
This allows many conversations to happen at the same time. Switching also allows a network to
maintain full duplex Ethernet, which allows information to travel from node to switch and switch to
node at the same time. Most networks do not exclusively use switches because of the costs involved
with replacing all hubs. A combination of switches and hubs are typically used to create an efficient
and less costly network (Tyson 2001).
When switching on layer 2, there are three important functions that a network administrator should
remember. The first, address learning, is when layer 2 switches retain the source hardware address and
port interface it was received on. It is then entered into a MAC database called a forward/filter table.
The second, forward/filter decisions, is when a switch looks at the destination hardware address and
finds the interface it is on in the filter table. It then chooses the correct exit interface for it in the MAC
database. Finally, loop avoidance. When redundancy creates multiple connections network loops

The Major Factors That Led Rome and the Hellenistic...
6. What were the major factors that led to clashes between Rome and the Hellenistic kingdoms, down

to the Hellenistic great powers (the Antigonids, Seleucids and Ptolemies) and to the minor players?

The three main successors forged dynasties that lasted a couple of centuries until they all were
defeated or came under the sway of Rome.
Rome fought three wars with Carthage called the Punic wars, these wars were fought between
264B.C. and 146B.C. (First 264 241B.C., Second 218 202B.C., Third 149 146B.C.) The first two
Punic wars were essentially defensive wars for Rome especially the second where Hannibal in
command of the Carthaginian forces crossed the Alps and attacked mainland Italy, the Romans were
able to repel Hannibal and his army, Hannibal was eventually defeated by the famous General Publius
Cornelius Scipio and pushed back to North Africa and Carthage. The second war reduced Carthage to
nothing but a city state, but Rome still feared that Carthage could rise once again to its former military
might and with the third Punic war; Rome razed Carthage to the ground, slaughtering or enslaving its
inhabitants. At the sight of the city utterly perishing amidst the flames Scipio burst into tears, and
stood long reflecting on the inevitable change which awaits cities, nations, and dynasties.
Rome and the Hellenistic kingdoms fought four wars called the Macedonian wars between 215B.C.
and 146B.C. and wars signalled the first clashes between Rome and the Hellenistic kingdoms. The
first Macedonian war was fought between Rome and Philip V of Macedon of the Antigonid kingdom

In 1898, the Americans won the Spanish American War, and signed the Treaty of Paris, which ceded
both Cuba and the Philippines, among others, to the US for the sum of 20 million dollars. The two
countries, which are both islands, have a tropical climate almost all year round. They were both part of
the Spanish empire for almost 400 years. Both Cuba and the Philippines have the natural resources
nickel, cobalt, timber, salt, copper, and petroleum. Additionally, these nations are both well educated,
with over 95% of their population over 15 years old able to read and write.
In 1492, Cuba was discovered by Christopher Columbus, and thus became a Spanish colony. The
Philippines became a Spanish colony 29 years later, in

Mobile Development And The Mobile Industry
The latter half of the past decade has seen new mobile development platforms emerge and become a
daily part of the average citizen s life. When Apple Inc. introduced the iPhone (one of the first to use a
multi touch interface), the mobile industry experienced a powerful spark. With the creation of the
smartphone came the first, true application, or app , ecosystem. The wide variety of mobile apps
available provide quick and easy access to services such as news and entertainment to health and
fitness. This event quickly restructured the value of certain mobile services and shifted attention to the
seemingly lucrative new economy of app development. Abandoned were the traditional pillars of the
mobile economy (SMS, telco services, mobile handsets?). These were nearly entirely replaced by the
focus towards the mobile app economy. Impressively, this new economy has the largest group of
developers (mostly entrepreneurs) to ever enter a technology industry. Despite the rapid growth and
the wide variety of economic and consumer related experiments being tested to expand the industry, it
is still in an early stage. With the ever increasing number of downloaded apps, entrepreneurs blindly
jump on the App Store bandwagon (or more than 30 other new app stores that have launched).
Currently, that may not be the wisest decision. The App Store hysteria is beginning to turn into a tech
bubble in which most developers will not ever be able to recover their costs. Experts are

The Hearts of Men Essay
The ways of men are broad in their spectrum, Shakespeare has shown me this. I have seen the most
devious acts and have witnessed men in heroic acts in dramatic display of courageous ascension.
Nevertheless, there are ones who have achieved a level of mediocrity or complacency throughout his
works, but all these states of action are relative as the minds that generate the impetus. The lowest of
the low I have witnessed personally, in these works, and on an international scale. My interactions
with fellow brothers has shown me this, what more can I say, some men are cowardly, self centered,

hungry man who I once believed to be my friend. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That same night, Neil grabbed a machete and cut one of the people who hurt him, slicing his head
open. He escaped the consequences of his own actions that night because he was in his own home.
Years later, a friend of his Jason Dominick fell in love with a girl, Karie Tucker, they broke up and she
started sleeping with Frank Bonacci and Jason at the same time though she chooses to deny it, and if
you were to confront her about she would lie to your face. She did it to me. As we all know, love
makes you crazy and that s what it did to Jason. I knew Jason better than Neil, we wrestled in high
school together, he would always stand his ground in a fight and was phenomenal football player and
a Division 1 Caliber wrestler, God gave him so much ability, and he wasted it, he lost scholarship via
drug and alcohol. Which brings me here; to the rock bottom; lowest of the low. I never would think
Jason would kill anyone, I knew he had rage, but to take another man s life, whom you settled your
differences with over a woman who is not yours and never was is just foolish. One night, Jason, Neil,
and Frank were all at a party... Jason and Neil had been drinking all day and at some point they

Prisoners Right to Vote

T he majority of democratic societies recognise the right to vote as an essential human right. Despite
this, there are a number of countries where leaders believe that the disenfranchisement of prisoners,
merely as a result of their imprisonment, is a justified and prerequisite manifestation of punishment.
The United Kingdom is one these countries but the case of Hirst in 2005 has forced the UK to
revaluate its position, and has seen the debate of prisoners right to vote resurface in light of this case.

This creates the core notion that, regardless of the severity of the crime, a person who is sentenced to
prison does not cease to be a human being, which is heralded by the principle that offenders are sent to
prison as punishment rather than for punishment.
Noting the compelling nature of this issue, and considering that the right to vote is one of the
hallmarks of citizenship and an established human right, there are still thirteen countries in Europe in
which prisoners cannot vote at all. A further thirteen which only allow conditional voting and there are
sixteen countries which permit complete prisoner suffrage. Offenders in Belgium whom are sentenced
to five years or more lose the right to vote for life. On a global context, Japan and Russia also enforce
blanket bans on prisoner votingas do 48 states in America where the states of Kentucky and Virginia
impose life long bans on all citizens with a criminal record. This makes it a difficult claim to prove
that prisoners still remain citizens upon incarceration in countries which prohibit prisoner suffrage.
Consequently, there has been a

Media Bias In Society
Media bias can be seen today on every type of media coverage that exists. Media bias is how the
person reporting the information perceives it, whether through their language when they speak about
the subject or their choice of words used in the article they wrote. A trending and important topic,
subject to such media bias is genetically modified organisms. These GMOs have modified DNA
which leads to better traits. For example, some modifications are to be able to withstand lower or
higher temperatures to growing bigger and at a faster rate. The perception of GMOs in society is
heavily split into two factions. One side is supporters of GMOs as they see it as a necessity in today s
society of billions of people. The other side is the people against GMOs who believe GMOs are not
actually beneficial to the society and may cause negative effects in overall human health. GMOs is
profoundly shown biasedly through people in all types of media coverage, like magazines,
newspapers, radio segments, the internet, or televised news segments since the people reporting use
multiple fallacies.
Media bias pertaining to GMOs can be seen in magazine articles. An article by Time magazine called
FOOD: GMOs Are Our Destiny is biased towards GMOs (Jahren, 2016). The article uses the appeal to
emotion, the attempt of persuasion through the use of emotion and feelings. For example, the author
Hope Jahren states, Yes, my best friend is a genetically modified organism; deliberate selection has

Genetic Testing And The Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project introduces significant scientific findings to the world, but raises a lot of
controversies. Many of these controversies concern the application of this new scientific finding and
its ethicality. Genetic information from a project, once aimed towards mapping the human genome in
hope for curing diseases, are now being used in businesses. It shouldn t be permissible for employers
to require that all employees, as well as potential employees, be screened for genetic vulnerabilities
and to use the results of such screening when they make hiring, retention, and job assignment
decisions. These genetic vulnerabilities may include diseases, unsuitable personality traits and other
traits the company deems undesirable. Employees shouldn t be judged by their genes, because the
results do not adequately speak for what the employees will do in life, the employee s position in the
society, and the employee s financial standing. Genetic testing should be an option for the employees
to decide on job assignment rather than influence the hiring decisions of employers. Genetic testing
only shows genetic potential, not potential growth. Conducting genetic testings on employees
infringes on their privacy and encourage more social gaps with genetic classes. There are possible
objections to this controversy due to the possible advantages of the genetic tests. It can be argued that
genetic tests can match people with the right occupations and enhance the best given traits

Changing The Music Industry As We Know It
As time continues to change, so does the music industry as we know it. Artists of different races,
genders, and differing music styles continue to emerge and create top hits on the charts. However,
some of these artists chose not to associate with major record labels, or sell any of their music to them.
These are the people bringing about the real changes that ought to be recognized and discussed. For
this paper, I decided to look at the group Postmodern Jukebox, their background as a group, their style
of music, and route they chose in this business. I believe groups like Postmodern Jukebox are
changing the music industry as we know it through their commitment to producing unique music, and
allowing for a diverse following that encourages living out your own true identity. According to the
group s official website, Postmodern Jukebox was founded by a young college drop out, Scott
Bradlee, who was struggling with ideas of how to pay off his student debt when he reached out to
former college friends and talented musicians Chris Anderson, Ben Golder Novick, Brandee Younger
and Emma Walker to record a song together (PostmodernJukebox.com, n.d.). From there, Postmodern
Jukebox began to remake many popular pop songs with their own unique twist, with the first song
they recorded together as a group being Lady Gaga s song Paparazzi, that was later posted on Youtube
to become a huge success for them (PostmodernJukebox.com, n.d.). Starting a Youtube channel seems

Key Differences Between Common Law And Civil Law
In Common Law and Civil Law the Key differences are that civil law is based on legislation while
common law is based on court decisions. If you look at the history of Law, you will see that civil law
stems back from as early as the 3rd century BC, it included various forms of law systems, from
Roman law, Germanic and local customs, cannon law, and the international law merchant. Civil law is
coded, encompassing all aspects of civil law, from procedural, to substantive and penal law. Civil law
is reflected in decision making as it s primarily legislative.
Common Law is based on custom and practice, derived from English history, which is reflected in
court decisions with the reliance of precedence. The role of the judicial in law making ... Show more

They come to this reasoning by other examples of civil law lawyer s reason supposedly by deductive,
the application of abstract principles to specific cases. While common law lawyers by induction, the
movement of from specific case to the general rule.
It can be said that maybe this reasoning has some merit to it, when comparing the differences and
likeness of both legal systems, which in the end is the same, an outcome, hopefully a fair and just one.
Further research show the attempts to compare the way a common law lawyer and a civil law lawyer
both interprets a written law. In this attempt to compare, it goes on to explain just how different their
techniques are at applying rules and principles on how the law interprets a statutory.
When a judge interprets a statute, he/she is merely approaching it from either a textual, historical or
functional stance, in order to find a solution to the problem presented to the court. In comparing a civil
law lawyer to a common law lawyer, one must look at ones methodology, how a legal scholar goes
about finding information regarding a factual case.
The rule of law in a general and practical sense is usually abided by most people in society, and we
view that the role of the judicial system is there to be guided by these rules. The role of lawyers,
judges and the courts in both civil law and

William Blake s The Chimney
The Pre Romantic poet William Blake grew up in a world that was undergoing dramatic changes. With
the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century, child labor became a common practice throughout
Britain. The children were oppressed and had a diminutive existence and were forced to work long
hours in the factories, mills, coal mines and chimneys, in dangerous and inhumane conditions. The
chimneys were often only seven inches wide and only a child was small enough to fit inside and brush
clean it. Master sweeps would buy young children usually six to ten years old from their poverty
stricken parents or take in young homeless children from the streets and turn them into indentured
servants. Blake deplored the society that could treat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

understood as adulthood, disillusionment, social criticism, and despair.
The structure of The Chimney Sweeper in the Songs of Innocence is six quatrains of the rhyme
scheme AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH IIJJ KKLL, it is a dramatic monologue, in which the child
narrates his story through the use of the personal pronoun I which adds a personal and genuine touch
to the poem because children are incapable of lying about their feelings. Blake successfully
emphasizes the innocence of a child who does not comprehend the injustice that he is experiencing.
The Chimney Sweeper in the Songs of Experience is a poem of three quatrains with the rhyme scheme
AABB CACA DEDE. There are two speakers in the poem, an adult speaker in the first stanza asks the
boy Where are thy father and mother? to which the boy replies and takes over as the speaker of the
poem. Blake sets up a pattern of rhyming couplets in the first stanza and then abandons the rhyme
scheme altogether in the next two stanzas in order to show that the speaker in the last two stanzas is a
child and using a simple rhyme scheme makes sense when a child is speaking. The sound of the poem
has a sweet and innocent effect, like the narrator himself.
The Chimney Sweeper in The Songs of Innocence begins with a depressing and sympathetic tone as
the child reveals that he is in a miserable

The Food Products By Michael Pollan
While most the food products that are out in the market today can barely be considered food to some
people, in my opinion, the majority of the people don t know what is in the food products they buy but
purchase these food products anyhow. I, myself being one of the people that don t always know what
is in the food products I purchase. After listening to the TED Talks and reading articles from Food

Transfer Of 40 % Ownership
A. Transfer of 40% Ownership As a sole proprietorship, Mr. Jones owns 100% of his used car
dealership. He has full authority to make big business decisions and reports business income from the
Schedule C to his Form 1040. He is currently deciding on re electing his business and giving his
daughter 40% ownership of the business. When a current owner brings in new business associates,
allocating a percentage of ownership is crucial. The individual with majority share has the voting
power to make or break critical business decisions. An even 50/50 spilt might create a deadlock which
could negatively impact the business. For example, another used car dealership wants to buy Mr.
Jones business. Mr. Jones thinks the sale is a good idea, but Mandy is completely against it. Since the
two are in a deadlock, the interested company may back out of the offer if a decision is not
immediately made. Using the same scenario with the 60/40 split, Mr. Jones is a majority shareholder
and has the voting authority over Mandy to accept the offer despite any rejections (Duff 2016).
Financially speaking, the duo is better off with the 60/40 split. The S corporation election allows for
income and deductions from the business to flow down to the taxpayers. If Mr. Jones decided to stay a
sole proprietor, he claims the entire $1,200,000 on his Form 1040. If he decides to elect the S
corporation status with a 60/40 split, he claims $720,000 of the business income, as well as 60% of the

Compare And Contrast Avengers Vs Dc.
Over the years in the world of comics there has been a major rivalry between Marvel Studios and DC.
Both studios have put out amazing content and are the top in Superhero creation. However, there s
always the question of which one is better. There are two teams, Marvel s Avengers and DC s Justice
League. Each team has multiple members, and it s always been a debate on which team would come
out victorious. In a battle between the Avengers and the Justice League who would win based on the
heroes individual skills? In order to find out how a battle between the two groups would happen we
split the two teams into six different pairs. Each hero was pit against someone who would have a
similar skill set or power level as them. After the sets were created, we then began to find out each
character s individual skills. Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each hero against the other
created a modest guess on who would win the battle. This is based solely on the skills of each
character and does not factor in battle areas or if the teams were to fight against each other together. ...

Comparing The Outrigger System And Braced Frame System
2.2 Braced Frame and Shear Walled Frame System
Rigid frame systems are not efficient for buildings taller than 30 stories, because lateral defection due
to the bending of columns causes the drift to be too large. On the other hand, steel bracing or shear
walls with or without rigid frame (brace systems and shear wall systems), increases the total rigidity of
the building and the resulting system is named as braced frame or shear walled frame system. These
systems are stiffer when compared to the rigid frame system, and can be used for buildings over 30
stories, but mostly applicable for buildings about 50 stories in height. However, there are examples for
these systems reaching over 100 storey ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As an innovative and efficient structural system, the outrigger system comprises a central core,
including either braced frames or shear walls, with horizontal outrigger trusses or girders connecting
the core to the external columns. Furthermore, in most cases, the external columns are interconnected
by exterior belt girder. If the building is subjected to the horizontal loading, the rotation of the core is
prevented by the column restrained outriggers. The outriggers and belt girder should be at least one
and often two stories deep to realize adequate stiffness. Thus, they are generally positioned at plant
levels to reduce the obstruction they create.
Depending upon the number of levels of outriggers and their stiffness, the perimeter columns of an
outrigger structure perform a composite behavior with the core. When compared to single storey
outrigger structures, multi storey outriggers have better lateral resistance, and thus efficiency in the
structural behavior. However, each extra outrigger storey enhances the lateral stiffness, but by a
smaller amount than the previous

Literary Differences In Kissing The Witch By Emma Donoghue
Nobody made me do the things I did, nobody scolded me, nobody punished me but me. The shrill
voices were all inside. Do this, do that, you lazy heap of dirt (2). Coming from the first passage of
Emma Donoghue s Kissing the Witch sets a revision of popular fairy tales whereas internal voices,
seen as personal experience, and their comparison to external voices, seen as societal expectations,
create places where these stories change. This shift can be seen as a move away from the original well
known story or aspects of that particular story, while also representing a change in the narrator of the
story itself.
The passage above for instance occurs when a cinderella type character is introduced to the reader.
These internal voices are normally associated with the external voices of the evil stepmother and
stepdaughters, which is associated widely with a common thread within the cinderella story itself.
This revision flips what is normally seen as an external voice and internalizes it. A few pages later we
see the girl and her interaction with the prince after he proposes marriage. The voices were shrieking,
Yes yes yes say yes before you lose your chance you bag of nothingness. I opened my teeth but no
sound came out (7). While the passage above set up the idea of internal voices, this passage shows
how this internalized external voice is not the voice of the cinderella type narrator. Not only does this
completely rewrite what is considered the normal ending for the

Our Little Mary is Dying, Reverend Essays
Gledhill knew that Mary was dying. She seemed sure to die before the night was much older. A man of
the cloth used to death and grieving might not save Mary but he would be able to soften the family s
grief. Death was a daily experience for parsons and Martin had been well provided with opportunities
to serve the dying in the little parish of Holmeside where the Dark Angel was a regular visitor.
Gledhill arrived at the imposing residence breathless. Mistress Joanne Martin, the vicar s wife
answered his frantic knock. She was a large woman with ruddy features, a shade acquired, it is told,
from continually exhorting her husband to common sense. Gledhill s presence on the doorstep
disconcerted her. Working men rarely came to see the vicar. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

You should know not to speak in that manner about your betters. Get away with you. My husband will

Gledhill repented of his outburst. Softly, he pleaded, Will you at least ask him, please? he clutched his
cap in his hands as though squeezing the life out of it.
The woman also relented of her sudden passion. I ll ask him, she said in a weary voice, but don t
expect anything. He s no mind to put himself out for the feckless!
She went inside, and although she was only gone for twenty seconds it seemed like hours to the
agitated father. Heeding the summons, Reverend Walter Martin thrust his irritated face through the
doorway, swinging the door wide in his anger. He had heard enough of the previous exchange to know
that on his doorstep stood a man speaking ill of his benefactor, and that told the divine that Gledhill
was not among the elect and neither the church nor its clergy had any obligation to minister to him,
whatever misfortune was visited on him or his children. His mind was made up before he spoke to
Gledhill, and so he laid a trap to catch the him out so that he could deny him the benefit of his holy
office and its ministrations with some sense of what passed for rectitude in his mind.
Ah, my son. I see you need help. Pray tell me when your child was baptised and where?

How Police Officers Are Affected By Loud Noise From The Gun
How Police officers are affected by loud impulsive Noise from the Gun
Introduction
Noise is one of the most widespread causes of hearing loss, and the most likely causes of occupational
illnesses in the United States (Leigh 728). Acute or prolonged exposure to high level, impulsive noise
is an ongoing problem for the military and defense forces all over the world (Sliwinska Kowalska and
Adrian Davis 274). One shot from a big caliber firearm, perceived at a close range, may permanently
or temporarily damage an individual hearing in an instant. Additionally, repeated exposures to noisy
machinery may, over an extensive period of time, impose serious risks to human hearing. According to
the report released by National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD);
ten million Americans have already suffered permanent hearing damage from noise and thirty to fifty
million individuals are exposed to hazardous noise levels every day (Leigh 728). Many hearing illness
in the police service originate from the noise caused by gunshots. As a result of increased cased of
hearing problem, mainly in the police service, many scholars have engaged in research in order to get
appropriate mean to control these problem. Considering the increasing investigation from military
groups for vital information on how to protect from impulse noise, it is vital to explore health effects
associated with impulse noise from gunshots. This study explores the effects on hearing caused by

Nikola Tesla Essay
Nikola Tesla was born midnight on July 10, 1856 in Smiljan, Lika, which was then part of the Austo
Hungarian Empire, region of Croatia. His father was named Milutin Tesla and was a Serbian Orthodox
Priest. Djuka Mandic was his mother and was an inventor in her own right of household appliances.
Tesla was the fourth child of five, having one older brother and 3 younger sisters. Tesla studied at the
Realschule, Karlstadt in 1873, the Polytechnic Institute in Graz, Austria and the University of Prague.
At first, he wanted to be specialized in physics and mathematics. But shortly after he became
extremely interested in electricity. He began studying alternating current their also. Supposedly he had

In New Jersey Tesla went about improving Edison s line of dynamos while working in Edison s lab. It
was here that his variation of opinion with Edison over direct current versus alternating current began.
This disagreement soon became the war of the currents as Edison fought a losing battle to protect his
investment in direct current equipment and facilities. Tesla began pointing out the worthlessness of
Edison s direct current electrical powerhouses that have been building up and down the Atlantic
seaboard. The secret, he felt, lay in the use of alternating current, because to him all energies were
cyclic. Edison s lamps were weak and worthless when supplied by direct current. This system had a
severe disadvantage in that it could not be transported more than two miles due to its incapability to
step up to high voltage levels necessary for long distance transmission. Because of this a direct current
power station was required every two miles. Direct current flows continuously in one direction;
alternating current changes direction fifty or sixty times per second and can be stepped up to vary high
voltage levels, minimizing power loss across great distances. Nikola Tesla developed polyphase
alternating current system of generators, motors and transformers. He held forty basic U.S. patents on
the system, which George Westinghouse bought, wanting to supply America with the Tesla system.
Edison did not want to lose his direct current

Apocalypto Analysis
Ancient Maya civilization has long held a certain draw and air of mystery for American and European
audiences. Its largest stone hewn cities, punctuated by pyramid temple constructions that dominate the
landscape like mountains, often sit abandoned in overgrown jungles untouched for centuries. This mix
of spectacular material culture and engineering accomplishments, combined with a sense of
wilderness, decay and lack of historical knowledge of the Maya, has created a special sort of
romanticized interest with roots that go as far back as the Antiquarian period. However, this interest
and myth remain just as strong in the contemporary. These lost cities and civilizations have become
the romantic subject of many a National Geographic special. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This decline is emphasized as a sort of social or moral degradation of the urban dwellers and elites
contrasted with an idealistic portrayal of peaceful, simple village life, and seems unfair in that it
chooses to focus its plot points on raiding and important Maya sacrificial rituals or blood offerings
without any contextual explanation. This lack of context easily invites misunderstanding and
misinterpretation by a general public that knows little about the Maya and likely has little
understanding of cultural relativism. However, this may have been the intention as some suggest that
the movie was never meant to be a true representation of Maya culture in the first place, despite its
clear marketing as such.1 In many ways, even aside from the representations of sacrifice, it is highly
questionable whether Apocalypto s portrayal of the Maya is very accurate. Filmmakers clearly paid
painstaking attention to visual and artistic detail in costumery and body art and based this factually on
Maya art from vessels and surviving murals. It certainly is not useful in understanding the diversity
and dynamics of the Maya people and their social

Adam And Eve Myths
The story of Adam and Eve from The Bible is a mythical story that explains why people are what we
are today. It is a myth because it explains why there is fear and pain in the world. It also shows how
men and women were created by God. The story of Adam and Eve also explains why there is good
and evil.
The story of Adam and Eve describes why there is pain and fear. In the beginning of the story Adam
and Eve are fearless. Adam and Eve are hubristic and they decide to disobey God s orders. When God
takes them out of the garden they begin to realize what fear is. Adam says, I was afraid, because I was

A Feminist Definition Of Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment is a delicate yet extremely controversial topic in the workplace and every day life.
Many women fall victim to sexual harassment yet fail to receive proper justice due to either being
unaware they were sexually harassed or that the burden of proof is unfairly put on them. Superson s
article, A Feminist Definition of Sexual Harassment was written to inform people that sexual
harassment that is directed at an individual, is actually an attack against all woman as a group. She

that sexual harassment it still so pervasive shows that there is too much tolerance of it (150). In her

These issues are minor, and the pros of ending sexual harassment certainly outweigh the few minor
concerns. The first issue being that because more behavior would be considered sexual harassment, it
would bring an impossible numbers of claims against offenders. This being true, more people could be
hired on to handle the growing number of claims. If an objective definition is taken seriously in legal
matters than, perpetrators will quickly discover that their actions will have serious consequences, and
will minimize if not stop their degrading behavior. Another issue with her definition that she discusses
is that, interpretation is still used when determining if behavior constitutes as sexual harassment. The
interpretation necessary when using an objective definition, includes assessing the offenders behavior
and whether or not it to be considered sexual harassment (did it occurr because woman are the inferior
group). This interpretation has a lot less wiggle room than when using a subjective definition, which
relies on the victims actions to determine whether something is considered sexual harassment. And we
know people react to situations

Roman Psychological Disorder
Roman 1
There are multiple kinds of psychological disorders and each one affects a person in many different
ways. I chose to write about this topic because I ve always been super curious about psychological
disorders and how they affect certain things about a person, such as their brain, personality, sleeping
patterns, the ability learn, and their life in general. A psychological disorder reflects psychopathology
which is sickness or disorder of the mind and can range from many different illnesses such as:
schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder,
phobia, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, personality disorders, antisocial
personality disorder, and many more. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two weeks is very different from two years. Major depressive disorder affects about 6 percent to 7
percent of Americans in any given year, and approximately 16 percent of Americans will experience
major depression at some point in their lives , and 2 to 3 percent of the population have persistent
depressive disorder, less intense symptoms (Gibson P. 512). Major depression can last anywhere
between weeks to months to even years. Just like schizophrenia depression has biological factors but
instead of environmental factors there are psychological factors. According to the textbook, there is
evidence that shows that major depression involves a lack of neurotransmitters that help with the
regulation of emotion, which is a biological factor (Gibson P. 513), this is why people with depression
have a lack of emotion. They are usually always tired and unhappy, don t really want to do anything or
participate in normal daily activities. The psychological factors consist of bullying, stress, a death,
divorce, or any type of negative event can push someone to become into a depressive state. Culture
and gender also play major roles in depression. Many more women tend to be diagnosed with
depression than men. Developing countries tend to have more women diagnosed with depression than
say countries like the United States. Depression is a serious psychological problem that sometimes
people don t take serious. Some people even keep to themselves if they experience some sort of
depression. For example, the famous comedian who stared in multiple popular movies, Robin
Williams, killed himself because he was experiencing major depression and no one had a clue. It s so
heartbreaking to see how a psychological disorder can really

Homo Sapiens Research Paper
Homo sapiens, or consciously thinking human , evolved 25,000 years ago forming an unprecedented
presence in the environment and the efficient exploitation of the environment. Physiological structural
advantages aided the Homo sapiens in taking the upper hand over other species. A fundamental
difference in the brain structure of the Homo sapiens was a well developed frontal region where
conscious and reflective thought takes place. Intelligence is the sharp edge of survival for these
hominids because physically they are not endowed with great strength or natural means of defense
which battle natural selection in the animal kingdom. Change in physiognomy such as upright walking
posture with opposable thumbs freed the hands from the task of locomotion and was instead applied
for the creation of higher sophisticated tools. Development of language allowed for communication
enhancing cooperation and a sense of cohesion as well as paving the way for collective learning which
is the drive for creating complexity. Homo sapiens used superior intelligence, sophisticated tools, and

How Industries Compete in the Textile Industry
Firms in the textile industry can compete using pricing or non pricing strategies. Pricing strategies
involves the use and manipulation of prices to increase market share and reduce potential and existing
competition in the textile industry. Non pricing strategies on the other hand refer to all the alternatives,
excluding price, that a firm uses to achieve the same objectives.
One of the most common pricing strategies used in the textile industry is the use of limit pricing. This
involves a firm setting a low enough price to deter new entrants from coming into the textile industry.
For example, a firm would set the price of their products below the estimated average cost of the new
entrant thus making the new entrant encounter a loss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Successful adverts would mean that the consumers will buy products from the firm that had advertised
and this will increase their customer base and possibly profits. Other firms will also advertise heavily
and the success will depend on which advert caught the attention of the consumer. Furthermore,
advertising may increase the demand for a good and may make the demand for that good inelastic.
The inelastic nature of the good will then allow firms to raise price in order to cover the costs of the
advertising. However, advertising can be very expensive and deciding on the right methods of
advertising may be very difficult. Furthermore, the success of the advert depends on the action of the
other firms. If the other firms also decide to increase their advertising expenditure, then the firms may
not be able to catch the attention of as many consumers as they intended. This would mean that the
advertising was unsuccessful hence not promoting competition.
Another non pricing strategy that a firm may adopt is developing their products so that their products
are unique compared to rival firms products and customers would rather buy the unique products than
the ordinary ones. For example, in the textile industry, people usually look for a particular type of
fashion E.G. collared or non collared, tight T shirts or maybe even short sleeved shirts as compared to
long sleeve shirts. Firm in the textile industry can change their products to suite the tastes and fashions

confidence I have in producing my own, which I found from GCSE television advertising work and in

In order to fulfil my brief successfully, I had to perform several areas of research, which will make the

This was done by putting key objects or people in the vanishing point and a lot of use of doors to show

Another method of research was to find an audience s opinion, by creating and distributing a
questionnaire. The questions were based on thriller film viewing and possibilities for a new thriller
film. I asked ten people to fill it in and collated the results in order to find out what film viewers want
from a film. I found out that people enjoy thriller films because they are very different to other film
genres and they enjoy the suspense, that psychological thriller films are popular, that completely
original narratives are preferred, which are realistic. That a fast editing pace and limited action and
violence is important in a thriller film. A film on child abduction, as this is a particularly topical
subject in the news at the moment, with a male and female hero/ine team would be popular. This
means that my idea for the narrative of the film would be popular if it was made and released and that
the film would have lots of suspense but little action or violence.
This gives me a firm idea of what my film must contain in order to fulfil the genre and be popular.

The Help by a twenty three year old struggling journalist about the maids lives and struggles in the

type of literary criticism. Upon countless days of pondering the opheldering question of what type of
literary criticism I would choose, I then decided to choose Post Structuralism Criticism. Post

Compare And Contrast Steinback And Jarrell
War is a history battle of nations and races against one another for their domination. War does two
things, it either hurts or helps. A war binds people together if it is justified of course and it hardens the
people. Overall, war happens because of national, cultural, and racial discrimination and it effects the
soldiers in combat accordingly to their position on the battlefield or their ability to survive. Moreover,
the writings of Steinback and Jarrell would be really effective in changing both public opinion and
policy. Steinback and Jarrell offer many consistent accounts of what combat feels like to them in their

have outstripped the carrying capacity and resources being used to maintain public health standards,

is a growing global issue and its impact is inevitable in Nigeria. Due to the many challenges posed by
the diverse problems associated with urbanization, the need for sustainable development in Nigeria is

David Malouf s Remembering Babylon And William Golding s...
David Malouf s Remembering Babylon and William Golding s The Inheritors both explore and
criticise violent and discriminatory human nature through various techniques. Remembering Babylon
takes place in 19th Century Queensland following a young British man, Gemmy Fairley, who was
thrown overboard a ship and has grown up with aboriginals for sixteen years, and his relationship with
the new settlers. The Inheritors follows a journey of a peaceful Neanderthal tribe who are slowly
facing extinction due to the violent nature of the coexisting humans, kidnapping and murdering. Both
novels have criticised the impacts of human nature, how humans has developed and detached
themselves from nature and been drawn to violence and discrimination. Malouf and Golding employ a
range of literary techniques to express these ideas.
Malouf and Golding s narrative perspectives vary to portray a unique perspective on the issues of
human nature. Malouf writes in third person omniscient with a narrator, however changes the focus to
specific characters throughout each chapter, becoming third person limited. This allows readers to
understand the mind set of the settlers surrounding Gemmy s arrival however for the perspective to
remain unbiased. This helps display issues of human nature in an unprejudiced way as Ned Corcoran,

Reebok Pump Synthesis Essay
Reebok has advertised their new shoe, called the Pump. In doing so they use diction, sentence
structure (syntax), and visual images to appeal the Pump to readers. This makes the ad stand out. It
makes the ad memorable. The ad benefits from them because they are used in communicating the ad s
message. The ad s message is that the Pump is perfect for any sport, and any training, no matter how
vigorous. The ad has unique diction choices. Diction is the word choices used in the ad, which helps to
communicate the ad s message. It uses personification, an allusion, connotation and denotation.
Personification is used in the big sentence in the upper middle of the front side, ...shoe that adapts to
you. The effect of the personification is that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The visual imagery in the ad are the various pictures in the ad, and anything that is not written out. An
example of visual imagery within the ad is the picture on the front right side of JJ Watt dragging a sled
while wearing the Pump shoes. This picture gives added meaning to the shoes. Usually, such drills as
the one depicted are performed with cleats by football players for the added grip provided. However,
in the picture in the ad, JJ Watt does the drill with a pair of the Pump shoes. Because he is doing it in
those shoes, this example of visual imagery is showing how these shoes, the Pump, can replace cleats
because of how good they are and how good grip they provide. That their grip is incredibly good and
reliable, thus making the shoe, the Pump, appear even better. This example of visual imagery then
contributes to the author s purpose. Because it shows how these shoes can be as good as cleats with
their great and reliable grip, and maybe even better than cleats because JJ Watt is using them for his
shoes in the drill rather than using cleats, it enforces the statement that the shoes the Pump are perfect.
The Pump is perfect for whatever the reader needs them for, no matter what it is. Visual imagery is
also used on the front side, being more prominent on the left side, but it goes across the whole page. It
is the fire. The fire is an example of visual imagery, making the entire ad seem much more intense. It
makes things seem to get heated up, as if you were using the Pump in a workout and you were
working really hard. This example of visual imagery contributes to the author s purpose. Sports can be
intense and they usually are intense, much like the fire depicted in the visual imagery example. This
starts to accelerate the blood flow, as if something is about to happen or you want to do something,
like work out or run. This leads to the question of what you should wear while doing that, and the ad
suggests that you wear the

Eliminating the Price Effect of an Index Automatically...
By the attempt to eliminate the price effect from an index fund, the fundamental index managers
change the set up of the index in such a way that it automatically changes the basic characteristics of
the index. As shown in exhibit 10 of the Research Affiliate case, fundamental indices usually not only
deal with a higher turnover ratio but also with a higher net expense ratio, for implementing the
fundamental strategy in reality seems to go hand in hand with higher costs.
Looking at commonly used multiples in exhibit 11, we see no surprises. While the P/E ratio for the
RAFI index is only slightly smaller compared to the Russell 1000 index, the Price to Book/Cash
Flow/Sales ratio is fundamentally lower in all categories for the RAFI index. More interesting is the
fact that the RAFI index is composed of companies with an on average lower market capitalization as
well as a higher leverage ratio, which might be a hint that the RAFI is also taking on more risk to
produce the excess returns. Even though Research Affiliates uses several methods to eliminate a bias
towards a specific sector/type of company, research shows that fundamental indices are clearly more
exposed to value and small stocks, which is further illustrated in exhibits 12 14.
Looking at exhibits 11 13 we directly observe RAFI s strong exposure towards financial institutions.
Citigroup and Bank of America alone account for roughly 15% of the index while Citigroup is not
even found within the 10 largest

Siege of Cawnpore
The Siege of Cawnpore was an important part of the Indian rebellion of 1857.When Nana Sahib
captured Cawnpore (now Kanpur) British forces surrendered to him and in turn he promised them a
safe passage to Allahabad. Unfortunately their evacuation had turned into a massacre during which
most of them were killed. It was indeed an unpleasant event of siege of Kanpur.
Kanpur was an important garrison town situated on the Grand Trunk Road and Grand Trunk Canal
beside the river Ganges and lay on the approaches to Punjab, Sind and Oudh provinces.
In 1857, British ruled two thirds of India through East India Company. The remaining part of the
country was under the control of Princes with whom the British had an alliance. The year 1857 was an

During siege the British felt that the magazine situated in the northern part of Cawnpore was the most
suitable defensive place for them to stay. It had thick walls, ample ammunition and stores and also
hosted the local treasury. But General Wheeler decided to take refuge in the southern part of the city,
in an entrenchment that was composed of two barracks surrounded by a mud wall. This area didn t
have proper sanitary facilities. It had only one well. There were several buildings overlooking the
entrenchment which would provide cover for the attackers.
There were many other safe places in Cawnpore but General Wheeler s choice of choosing this place
stands still controversial. He might have expected the reinforcements to arrive from the southern part
of the city. He might have also assumed that, in case of a rebellion, the Indian troops would probably
collect their arms, ammunition and money and would head to Delhi and therefore, he did not expect
such a long siege.
After three weeks of siege, the British started facing the difficulties. The summers were very hot.
Many died due to sunstroke. They were short of ammunition as they had to face successive
bombardments, snip fire and assaults from Nana Sahib s side. Their food supplies were getting
exhausted and they had to face starvation. People were becoming sick and they were deprived of
medical facilities. In such a situation

Establishment Of The Environmental Protection Agency
Zoe Brown Mrs. Helms English III Honors 7 November 2014 Establishment of the Environmental

impacts on both the human and sea life populations. During the New York weather inversion of 1965,
over 80 people died from the man made smog over the four day period. In the Santa Barbara oil spill
of 1969, over 3,700 sea birds were killed, along with countless other forms of marine life. The nuclear
reactor meltdown in Idaho in 1961 was the only United States incident by that time that resulted in

On April 22nd, 1970, the American public gathered in the streets to celebrate clean air, water, and
land. Congressmen in Washington D.C. halted their activities to be their constituents; however, the
Nixon administration was laboring at what would become the capstone of environmental policy, the
EPA. While Earth Day was the launch of environmentalism in the modern sense, individuals had been
combating natural resource degradation for centuries. In 1849, Henry David Thoreau published a
compilation of lectures, Walden, that would become the standard by which all subsequent nature
writings are judged. John Muir, father of the American preservationist movement, cofounded the
Sierra Club, which preserved California wild lands. Both Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano
Roosevelt worked during their tenure as presidents to save the National Park System (
Environmentalism ). After World War II, the United States birthrate skyrocketed, and people found
themselves living on the edge of parks and nature. The public began to question whether the
government was working to preserve untouched land for future generations. When Rachel Carson
published Silent Spring in 1962, the era of environmentalism was born. This movement demanded the
state not only preserve the Earth, but act to regulate and punish those who polluted it (Farrah). The
work on the pesticide poisoning of man sparked a powerful public

Essay on Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
It is impossible to interpret Gloria Naylor s 1988 novel, Mama Day, in one way. There are multiple
standpoints that a reader can take in explaining various events that occur throughout the book, as well
as different ways that the characters in the book interpret these events. The author never fully clarifies
many questions that the story generates so as to leave the readers with the opportunity to answer them
based on their own personal experiences and beliefs. The multiplicity of perspectives in Gloria Naylor
s Mama Day is embodied in the legend of Sapphira Wade and the dynamics between logic and the
supernatural and between George and Cocoa.
Sapphira Wade is a character that Naylor uses as a tool ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The descendents of Sapphira all received deeds to pieces of land in Willow Springs in 1823. How the
descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because different
interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from generation to
generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed, while others
say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in
Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently
lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a slang term. For some, the phrase seems to
represent death and destruction whereas others use it synonymously with deception. But no matter
what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so many views are accepted by the community conveys
to the reader the importance of open mindedness in reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the
significance of open mindedness by providing the reader with the opportunity to choose more than one
way to explain Mama Day s encounter with Bernice. Bernice decides to seek the advice of Mama Day,
who is known to have miraculous healing abilities, when she has trouble conceiving. Mama Day gives
Bernice pumpkin seeds and puts her under the impression that they are magic seeds (Naylor 96). This
gives Bernice time to build

Mass Extinction And Its Impact On The World
200,000 years ago, the most adaptable animal that has ever lived comes onto the world, and it
possessed a very large brain. Homo sapiens or more commonly referred to as modern humans,
survived by using these powerful brains to learn and prosper in its environment. No other species has
had such a huge impact on the world compared to that of humans. Being able to manipulate the
environment to better suit their needs, but for every action there is an opposite and sometimes an even
greater consequence. Many signs point to a great extinction occurring at this moment and it has
correlation with the beginning of the Homo sapiens expansion, more increasingly with the rise of the
Industrial Era. Human hands have managed to touch every species on earth in one shape or another,
and there is nowhere for them to escape to. This great extinction, though not to the magnitude of the
five previous mass extinctions has the potential to rival them. The sixth mass extinction has its origin
starting back to roughly 100,000 years known as the Holocene Event (Lawrence, 2011). This is also
around the time that humans began to expand out of Africa, and into the Asian and European
continents. Leaving there foot prints on the land and the negative effects on the animals they
encountered. Lawrence also states that the climate fluctuated during this period of time but it had no
corresponding extinctions with the fluctuations (2011). So, humans had to have an impact with the
extinction of the larger

The Atmosphere Of A Space
Atmosphere is a powerfully, ever present phenomenon that is accepted and attributed to how we
perceive an environment. It is relevant in every aspect of a space, and used by designers of all fields to
influence, teach and evoke an emotion or mood creatively. There is a kind of intimacy within the
development of an atmosphere and it is a powerful intermediary between the subject and object
(Bohme, 1993, p118). Through the manipulation of various physical components, a designer can set a
mood, that seems to fill the void in a space which is important as an artwork cannot be grasped solely
through its concrete qualities (Bohme, 1993, p116). An important idea within this atmospheric
appreciation is that it is how we perceive a space, which creates our mood. Each individual will have a
different perception of a space and how the various elements radiate towards him or her. A designer s
aim is to engage the audience for the full duration of being in a space and it is these atmospheric
qualities that predominantly control this. This essay will take a significant look at the creation and
development of atmosphere within a space, in particular fashion runways. It will give a brief
introduction into the idea of an atmosphere and how designers can create certain moods and emotions
by controlling various elements within a space. There will be focus on the work of iconic fashion
designers, and the atmosphere they individually set out to create.

House Of The Red Fish Loyalty Quotes
In the story, House of the Red Fish Tomi s situations and what he has to go through everyday teaches
many about Tomi s loyalty to others, during the whole entire book. In the book he goes through tough
times but still shows care and helps others without thinking about himself first. There is a substantial
amount of evidence to support my reasonings from the book which will be used to explain why Tomi
is so loyal.
One word that will help explain Tomi s loyalty is the word Kind which Tomi show many times
throughout the book. Tomi s kindness towards other is a very important key evidence to why Tomi s
so loyal. What makes Tomi so kind is the fact that Tomi doesn t act rude to his friends and he always
sticks by their sides. This is clearly stated in the book and one evidence in the book to prove this is in
Chapter 10 page 49 it says For Tomi, I going be Japanese. which is pretty much trying to say that Rico
would be Japanese for Tomi s sake cause Rico sees Tomi as a good trustworthy friend that he can

What makes Tomi so responsible is that he is always looking for ways to help his family make money
to live off on and is always keeping responsibilities and hiding and cleaning the family katana in
different location so people won t find it. A piece of evidence in the book to support this piece of
evidence is on page 8 it states I can quit school and get a job what this is saying is that Tomi is willing
to give up his education to help his family raise more money which comes to the point that Tomi cares
about others before himself which can be another form of loyalty. Then Tomi trying to hide the Katana
is loyal to his family because it s a family Katana thats suppose to be cherished so by Tomi hiding it
and keeping it safe till his Grandpa and Grandma come home is a very loyal thing of Tomi to

Abstract
Al Qaeda is arguably the most well known and most dangerous Islamic terrorist organization in the
world. It was established around 1990 by a Saudi millionaire, Osama Bin Laden, to bring together
Arabs who fought in Afghanistan against the Soviet invasion. The goal of the organization is to
reestablish the Muslim state throughout the world. Al Qaeda works with allied Islamic extremist
groups to overthrow regimes it deems non Islamic and remove Westerners from Muslin countries.
Groups affiliated with Al Qaeda have conducted numerous bombings and other violent attacks
throughout the world that have resulted in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These plots included the bombings of the African Embassies in 1998 and the September 11, 2001
attacks. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks against America, American led forces toppled the
Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Approximately half of the senior Al Qaeda leadership was captured
during the American led campaign, along with crippling the group s communication network. The
exact size of Al Qaeda is unknown, but the group likely has several thousand fighters. The estimated
numbers of people who trained in camps or fought in Afghanistan ranges from 20,000 to 60,000 but
these are not all Al Qaeda members. Al Qaeda serves as an umbrella organization that carries out its
own terrorist acts as well as a focal point for other extremist groups. Some experts believe that Al
Qaeda is an organization in transition. The losses of many of the group s leaders and their base in
Afghanistan have disrupted the organization. While Al Qaeda s definitive structure is unknown,
experts fear that the organization can continue to operate if they lose senior leaders due to the
entrepreneurial spirit in its lower level fighters. Al Qaeda is a network with global reach and is
reinforced by its ties to Sunni extremist networks. Until the American led attack, Afghanistan was
where Al Qaeda s base of operation, logistics, and training facilities were. Al Qaeda has since
branched out and has cells or collaborators found in south Asia, Southeast Asia, the

Nell s Twin Talk
In the movie Nell lost her twin sister as at a young age, as expected when a person loses someone they
care about they experience the process of grieving. It was portrayed that they were very close, would
play on the rocks together, and even had their own language that they talked to one other in. The
grieving was ever so apparent when she would stand on the rocks and go in circles envisioning her
twin sister was with her even though she was not. As we got to know Nell her words started making

198) For example, when they realized that it was males that Nell coined as evildoers they believed
they could change her view by using Dr. Lovell to get rid of her fear. They showed her that all men
were not evildoers. This proved that she was open to change her beliefs if she was shown how it
would cause no harm. In this particular movie, nurture plays a bigger role than nature. All that
characteristics that made Nell herself were taught by her mother. She was taught that she shouldn t go
out during the day, that men were evildoers, she learned her how to talk from her mom, and also how
to take care of herself living in the woods. All of these helped form her into the person that she was
when the doctors found her. Also, in this film I believe that a mix of both performance and mastery
goals were displayed. Performance goals are defined as the goal to demonstrate abilities to others. (
Mastery vs. Performance Goals ) Whereas mastery goals are goals that seek to improve and learn. (

Room Vision Board Analysis
I have come up with quite a few money saving options to transform your nursery, playroom, child s
bedroom or ever you teenagers lair into a wonderful, custom space that they ll never want to leave! To
get started you must know what your budget is; with some of these tips no budget it too small. Next,
have a feel for what your child likes or what kind of space you want to create ; have an idea going into
it. If you don t, then start digging for new fresh ideas. Pick a theme if you want. Themes can be
anything, a print( Chevron, paisley, Moroccan) , one or more of your favorite colors, a Disney
character, the sea, dinosaurs, construction... The ideas are endless. You just have to choose something
that fits your child s likes needs! I recommend starting a room vision board; your child can help! Go
through old magazines, paint swatches, images on the internet looking for things they like. Cut them
out or print out the images glue them done on a paper This could be anything a specific color , storage
ideas, a theme, a pattern... anything that stands out to the person whom the room is for. Then, cut them
out or print out the images glue them down on a paper or pin it to a board. This creation of a visual
idea collage will become the blueprint that the room is based on. Once this is done decide what things
to can repurpose or make yourself. Even if it s a few things, making it yourself from the heart is
ALWAYS better than buying. If you do need to buys some item always shop around! If you find
something you like somewhere, there s usually a good chance that ... Show more content on

  • 2. Immigration And The United States Immigration is one of the most heated topics in the U.S. political and social agenda and usually evokes strong polar opinions in the American society, in part due to its complex composition of peoples and cultures. It is precisely due to this fact, that the interpreters and translators working in the field of Immigration must be familiar not only with the basic types of immigration hearings, but have an understanding of the history of Immigration in the United States, different types of visas and statuses as well as paths to Permanent Residency and Citizenship. This Unit will provide you with the condensed knowledge of the main events in the United States history, explain the difference between the numerous types of visas and inform you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 1. HISTORY OF IMMIGRATION The United States of America has a rich immigration history, dating back to the 18th century, where there were virtually no immigration restrictions, making the U.S. a kaleidoscope of ethnic and cultural groups it is today. Following the Civil War, several U.S. states made initial attempts in regulating immigration, which led to the 1875 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to make the immigration a federal responsibility, thus launching a chain of Immigration laws and regulations leading us to today. The first immigration law, the Page Act of 1875 (aka the Asian Exclusion Act) was passed in 1875 and prohibited the importation of Asian contract workers, any Asian women who would engage in prostitution and everybody who is considered to be a convict in their own county. The Page Act of 1875 was followed by the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited Chinese contract laborers to immigrate to the United States, as well as Alien Contract Labor laws of 1885 and 1887, both of which broadened the laborers exclusion list. Soon after, the increasingly complex immigration laws established by the federal government led to the creation of the Office of the Superintendent of Immigration within the Treasure Department. The newly organized government office inspected, admitted or rejected as well as processed all the newly arriving immigrants. January 2nd, 1892 marked the opening of the famous immigration station located on Ellis Island in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Switching Technology For A Network Switching Technology Cassandra Anton Bellevue University Abstract Switching is a technology that has been used since the first communication networks were invented. In order to understand switching, we must first discuss switches. A switch is a device that connects other devices on a network. Switches can also prevent bad packets from spreading by not forwarding them on. While switches can be helpful to a network they should not be seen as an instant fix for network issues. There are many benefits to using network switching in a network. A switch can break one large network into smaller networks so that the distance limitations are restarted. By creating the smaller networks traffic is isolated, reducing collisions. It can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a full switched network, hubs are not used. Instead, switches are used with a dedicated segment for every node. In this type of network the switch picks up every transmission before it reaches another node. Since any segment only reaches a single node, the frame only reaches the intended recipient. This allows many conversations to happen at the same time. Switching also allows a network to maintain full duplex Ethernet, which allows information to travel from node to switch and switch to node at the same time. Most networks do not exclusively use switches because of the costs involved with replacing all hubs. A combination of switches and hubs are typically used to create an efficient and less costly network (Tyson 2001). When switching on layer 2, there are three important functions that a network administrator should remember. The first, address learning, is when layer 2 switches retain the source hardware address and port interface it was received on. It is then entered into a MAC database called a forward/filter table. The second, forward/filter decisions, is when a switch looks at the destination hardware address and finds the interface it is on in the filter table. It then chooses the correct exit interface for it in the MAC database. Finally, loop avoidance. When redundancy creates multiple connections network loops ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The three main successors forged dynasties that lasted a couple of centuries until they all were defeated or came under the sway of Rome. The first two Punic wars were essentially defensive wars for Rome especially the second where Hannibal in command of the Carthaginian forces crossed the Alps and attacked mainland Italy, the Romans were able to repel Hannibal and his army, Hannibal was eventually defeated by the famous General Publius Cornelius Scipio and pushed back to North Africa and Carthage. The second war reduced Carthage to nothing but a city state, but Rome still feared that Carthage could rise once again to its former military might and with the third Punic war; Rome razed Carthage to the ground, slaughtering or enslaving its inhabitants. At the sight of the city utterly perishing amidst the flames Scipio burst into tears, and stood long reflecting on the inevitable change which awaits cities, nations, and dynasties. Rome and the Hellenistic kingdoms fought four wars called the Macedonian wars between 215B.C. and 146B.C. and wars signalled the first clashes between Rome and the Hellenistic kingdoms. • 7. Mobile Development And The Mobile Industry The latter half of the past decade has seen new mobile development platforms emerge and become a daily part of the average citizen s life. When Apple Inc. introduced the iPhone (one of the first to use a multi touch interface), the mobile industry experienced a powerful spark. With the creation of the smartphone came the first, true application, or app , ecosystem. The wide variety of mobile apps available provide quick and easy access to services such as news and entertainment to health and fitness. This event quickly restructured the value of certain mobile services and shifted attention to the seemingly lucrative new economy of app development. Abandoned were the traditional pillars of the mobile economy (SMS, telco services, mobile handsets?). These were nearly entirely replaced by the focus towards the mobile app economy. Impressively, this new economy has the largest group of developers (mostly entrepreneurs) to ever enter a technology industry. Despite the rapid growth and the wide variety of economic and consumer related experiments being tested to expand the industry, it is still in an early stage. With the ever increasing number of downloaded apps, entrepreneurs blindly jump on the App Store bandwagon (or more than 30 other new app stores that have launched). Currently, that may not be the wisest decision. The App Store hysteria is beginning to turn into a tech bubble in which most developers will not ever be able to recover their costs. Experts are ... • 8. The Hearts of Men Essay The ways of men are broad in their spectrum, Shakespeare has shown me this. I have seen the most devious acts and have witnessed men in heroic acts in dramatic display of courageous ascension. Nevertheless, there are ones who have achieved a level of mediocrity or complacency throughout his works, but all these states of action are relative as the minds that generate the impetus. The lowest of the low I have witnessed personally, in these works, and on an international scale. My interactions with fellow brothers has shown me this, what more can I say, some men are cowardly, self centered, insert expletive here s. She did it to me. As we all know, love makes you crazy and that s what it did to Jason. I knew Jason better than Neil, we wrestled in high school together, he would always stand his ground in a fight and was phenomenal football player and a Division 1 Caliber wrestler, God gave him so much ability, and he wasted it, he lost scholarship via drug and alcohol. Which brings me here; to the rock bottom; lowest of the low. I never would think Jason would kill anyone, I knew he had rage, but to take another man s life, whom you settled your differences with over a woman who is not yours and never was is just foolish. Examination Code: R12630 Module Code: 6FFLK020 Date of Submission: 28/03/2013 T he majority of democratic societies recognise the right to vote as an essential human right. Despite this, there are a number of countries where leaders believe that the disenfranchisement of prisoners, merely as a result of their imprisonment, is a justified and prerequisite manifestation of punishment. The United Kingdom is one these countries but the case of Hirst in 2005 has forced the UK to revaluate its position, and has seen the debate of prisoners right to vote resurface in light of this case. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This creates the core notion that, regardless of the severity of the crime, a person who is sentenced to prison does not cease to be a human being, which is heralded by the principle that offenders are sent to prison as punishment rather than for punishment. Noting the compelling nature of this issue, and considering that the right to vote is one of the hallmarks of citizenship and an established human right, there are still thirteen countries in Europe in which prisoners cannot vote at all. A further thirteen which only allow conditional voting and there are sixteen countries which permit complete prisoner suffrage. Offenders in Belgium whom are sentenced to five years or more lose the right to vote for life. On a global context, Japan and Russia also enforce blanket bans on prisoner votingas do 48 states in America where the states of Kentucky and Virginia impose life long bans on all citizens with a criminal record. This makes it a difficult claim to prove that prisoners still remain citizens upon incarceration in countries which prohibit prisoner suffrage. Consequently, there has been a ... • 10. Media Bias In Society Media bias can be seen today on every type of media coverage that exists. Media bias is how the person reporting the information perceives it, whether through their language when they speak about the subject or their choice of words used in the article they wrote. A trending and important topic, subject to such media bias is genetically modified organisms. These GMOs have modified DNA which leads to better traits. For example, some modifications are to be able to withstand lower or higher temperatures to growing bigger and at a faster rate. The perception of GMOs in society is heavily split into two factions. One side is supporters of GMOs as they see it as a necessity in today s society of billions of people. The other side is the people against GMOs who believe GMOs are not actually beneficial to the society and may cause negative effects in overall human health. GMOs is profoundly shown biasedly through people in all types of media coverage, like magazines, newspapers, radio segments, the internet, or televised news segments since the people reporting use multiple fallacies. Media bias pertaining to GMOs can be seen in magazine articles. An article by Time magazine called FOOD: GMOs Are Our Destiny is biased towards GMOs (Jahren, 2016). The article uses the appeal to emotion, the attempt of persuasion through the use of emotion and feelings. • 11. Genetic Testing And The Human Genome Project The Human Genome Project introduces significant scientific findings to the world, but raises a lot of controversies. Many of these controversies concern the application of this new scientific finding and its ethicality. Genetic information from a project, once aimed towards mapping the human genome in hope for curing diseases, are now being used in businesses. It shouldn t be permissible for employers to require that all employees, as well as potential employees, be screened for genetic vulnerabilities and to use the results of such screening when they make hiring, retention, and job assignment decisions. These genetic vulnerabilities may include diseases, unsuitable personality traits and other traits the company deems undesirable. Employees shouldn t be judged by their genes, because the results do not adequately speak for what the employees will do in life, the employee s position in the society, and the employee s financial standing. Genetic testing should be an option for the employees to decide on job assignment rather than influence the hiring decisions of employers. Genetic testing only shows genetic potential, not potential growth. Conducting genetic testings on employees infringes on their privacy and encourage more social gaps with genetic classes. There are possible objections to this controversy due to the possible advantages of the genetic tests. It can be argued that genetic tests can match people with the right occupations and enhance the best given traits ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Artists of different races, genders, and differing music styles continue to emerge and create top hits on the charts. However, some of these artists chose not to associate with major record labels, or sell any of their music to them. These are the people bringing about the real changes that ought to be recognized and discussed. For this paper, I decided to look at the group Postmodern Jukebox, their background as a group, their style of music, and route they chose in this business. I believe groups like Postmodern Jukebox are changing the music industry as we know it through their commitment to producing unique music, and allowing for a diverse following that encourages living out your own true identity. According to the group s official website, Postmodern Jukebox was founded by a young college drop out, Scott Bradlee, who was struggling with ideas of how to pay off his student debt when he reached out to former college friends and talented musicians Chris Anderson, Ben Golder Novick, Brandee Younger and Emma Walker to record a song together (PostmodernJukebox.com, n.d.). From there, Postmodern Jukebox began to remake many popular pop songs with their own unique twist, with the first song they recorded together as a group being Lady Gaga s song Paparazzi, that was later posted on Youtube to become a huge success for them (PostmodernJukebox.com, n.d.). • 14. Key Differences Between Common Law And Civil Law In Common Law and Civil Law the Key differences are that civil law is based on legislation while common law is based on court decisions. If you look at the history of Law, you will see that civil law stems back from as early as the 3rd century BC, it included various forms of law systems, from Roman law, Germanic and local customs, cannon law, and the international law merchant. Civil law is coded, encompassing all aspects of civil law, from procedural, to substantive and penal law. Civil law is reflected in decision making as it s primarily legislative. Further research show the attempts to compare the way a common law lawyer and a civil law lawyer both interprets a written law. In this attempt to compare, it goes on to explain just how different their techniques are at applying rules and principles on how the law interprets a statutory. When a judge interprets a statute, he/she is merely approaching it from either a textual, historical or functional stance, in order to find a solution to the problem presented to the court. In comparing a civil law lawyer to a common law lawyer, one must look at ones methodology, how a legal scholar goes about finding information regarding a factual case. With the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century, child labor became a common practice throughout Britain. The chimneys were often only seven inches wide and only a child was small enough to fit inside and brush clean it. Blake sets up a pattern of rhyming couplets in the first stanza and then abandons the rhyme scheme altogether in the next two stanzas in order to show that the speaker in the last two stanzas is a child and using a simple rhyme scheme makes sense when a child is speaking. He has full authority to make big business decisions and reports business income from the Schedule C to his Form 1040. He is currently deciding on re electing his business and giving his daughter 40% ownership of the business. When a current owner brings in new business associates, allocating a percentage of ownership is crucial. The individual with majority share has the voting power to make or break critical business decisions. An even 50/50 spilt might create a deadlock which could negatively impact the business. For example, another used car dealership wants to buy Mr. Jones business. Mr. Jones thinks the sale is a good idea, but Mandy is completely against it. Since the two are in a deadlock, the interested company may back out of the offer if a decision is not immediately made. Using the same scenario with the 60/40 split, Mr. Jones is a majority shareholder and has the voting authority over Mandy to accept the offer despite any rejections (Duff 2016). Financially speaking, the duo is better off with the 60/40 split. The S corporation election allows for income and deductions from the business to flow down to the taxpayers. If Mr. Jones decided to stay a sole proprietor, he claims the entire $1,200,000 on his Form 1040. Comparing The Outrigger System And Braced Frame System 2.2 Braced Frame and Shear Walled Frame System Rigid frame systems are not efficient for buildings taller than 30 stories, because lateral defection due to the bending of columns causes the drift to be too large. On the other hand, steel bracing or shear walls with or without rigid frame (brace systems and shear wall systems), increases the total rigidity of the building and the resulting system is named as braced frame or shear walled frame system. These systems are stiffer when compared to the rigid frame system, and can be used for buildings over 30 stories, but mostly applicable for buildings about 50 stories in height. As an innovative and efficient structural system, the outrigger system comprises a central core, including either braced frames or shear walls, with horizontal outrigger trusses or girders connecting the core to the external columns. Furthermore, in most cases, the external columns are interconnected by exterior belt girder. If the building is subjected to the horizontal loading, the rotation of the core is prevented by the column restrained outriggers. The outriggers and belt girder should be at least one and often two stories deep to realize adequate stiffness. Thus, they are generally positioned at plant levels to reduce the obstruction they create. Depending upon the number of levels of outriggers and their stiffness, the perimeter columns of an outrigger structure perform a composite behavior with the core. When compared to single storey outrigger structures, multi storey outriggers have better lateral resistance, and thus efficiency in the structural behavior. Do this, do that, you lazy heap of dirt (2). Coming from the first passage of Emma Donoghue s Kissing the Witch sets a revision of popular fairy tales whereas internal voices, seen as personal experience, and their comparison to external voices, seen as societal expectations, create places where these stories change. This shift can be seen as a move away from the original well known story or aspects of that particular story, while also representing a change in the narrator of the story itself. The passage above for instance occurs when a cinderella type character is introduced to the reader. These internal voices are normally associated with the external voices of the evil stepmother and stepdaughters, which is associated widely with a common thread within the cinderella story itself. This revision flips what is normally seen as an external voice and internalizes it. A few pages later we see the girl and her interaction with the prince after he proposes marriage. The voices were shrieking, Yes yes yes say yes before you lose your chance you bag of nothingness. I opened my teeth but no sound came out (7). While the passage above set up the idea of internal voices, this passage shows how this internalized external voice is not the voice of the cinderella type narrator. It was here that his variation of opinion with Edison over direct current versus alternating current began. This disagreement soon became the war of the currents as Edison fought a losing battle to protect his investment in direct current equipment and facilities. Tesla began pointing out the worthlessness of Edison s direct current electrical powerhouses that have been building up and down the Atlantic seaboard. The secret, he felt, lay in the use of alternating current, because to him all energies were cyclic. Edison s lamps were weak and worthless when supplied by direct current. This system had a severe disadvantage in that it could not be transported more than two miles due to its incapability to step up to high voltage levels necessary for long distance transmission. Because of this a direct current power station was required every two miles. Direct current flows continuously in one direction; alternating current changes direction fifty or sixty times per second and can be stepped up to vary high voltage levels, minimizing power loss across great distances. Nikola Tesla developed polyphase alternating current system of generators, motors and transformers. Intelligence is the sharp edge of survival for these hominids because physically they are not endowed with great strength or natural means of defense which battle natural selection in the animal kingdom. Change in physiognomy such as upright walking posture with opposable thumbs freed the hands from the task of locomotion and was instead applied for the creation of higher sophisticated tools. Development of language allowed for communication enhancing cooperation and a sense of cohesion as well as paving the way for collective learning which is the drive for creating complexity. Homo sapiens used superior intelligence, sophisticated tools, and language to exploit the natural world more efficiently than any other species ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 35. How Industries Compete in the Textile Industry Firms in the textile industry can compete using pricing or non pricing strategies. Pricing strategies involves the use and manipulation of prices to increase market share and reduce potential and existing competition in the textile industry. Non pricing strategies on the other hand refer to all the alternatives, excluding price, that a firm uses to achieve the same objectives. One of the most common pricing strategies used in the textile industry is the use of limit pricing. This involves a firm setting a low enough price to deter new entrants from coming into the textile industry. For example, a firm would set the price of their products below the estimated average cost of the new entrant thus making the new entrant encounter a loss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Successful adverts would mean that the consumers will buy products from the firm that had advertised and this will increase their customer base and possibly profits. Other firms will also advertise heavily and the success will depend on which advert caught the attention of the consumer. Furthermore, advertising may increase the demand for a good and may make the demand for that good inelastic. The inelastic nature of the good will then allow firms to raise price in order to cover the costs of the advertising. However, advertising can be very expensive and deciding on the right methods of advertising may be very difficult. Furthermore, the success of the advert depends on the action of the other firms. If the other firms also decide to increase their advertising expenditure, then the firms may not be able to catch the attention of as many consumers as they intended. This would mean that the advertising was unsuccessful hence not promoting competition. Another non pricing strategy that a firm may adopt is developing their products so that their products are unique compared to rival firms products and customers would rather buy the unique products than the ordinary ones. For example, in the textile industry, people usually look for a particular type of fashion E.G. collared or non collared, tight T shirts or maybe even short sleeved shirts as compared to long sleeve shirts. This is due to my interest in them and the confidence I have in producing my own, which I found from GCSE television advertising work and in my ability to deconstruct existing films. In order to fulfil my brief successfully, I had to perform several areas of research, which will make the product look like products in real life and show that I know and can use the appropriate codes and conventions. I asked ten people to fill it in and collated the results in order to find out what film viewers want from a film. I found out that people enjoy thriller films because they are very different to other film genres and they enjoy the suspense, that psychological thriller films are popular, that completely original narratives are preferred, which are realistic. That a fast editing pace and limited action and violence is important in a thriller film. A film on child abduction, as this is a particularly topical subject in the news at the moment, with a male and female hero/ine team would be popular. This means that my idea for the narrative of the film would be popular if it was made and released and that the film would have lots of suspense but little action or violence. I had decided upon reading The Help, because it is a great piece of literature written from the perspective of The Help by a twenty three year old struggling journalist about the maids lives and struggles in the 1960 s. I was then detailed to use the piece of literature that I had chosen to read, to then express a type of literary criticism. Upon countless days of pondering the opheldering question of what type of literary criticism I would choose, I then decided to choose Post Structuralism Criticism. • 40. David Malouf s Remembering Babylon And William Golding s... David Malouf s Remembering Babylon and William Golding s The Inheritors both explore and criticise violent and discriminatory human nature through various techniques. Remembering Babylon takes place in 19th Century Queensland following a young British man, Gemmy Fairley, who was thrown overboard a ship and has grown up with aboriginals for sixteen years, and his relationship with the new settlers. The Inheritors follows a journey of a peaceful Neanderthal tribe who are slowly facing extinction due to the violent nature of the coexisting humans, kidnapping and murdering. Both novels have criticised the impacts of human nature, how humans has developed and detached themselves from nature and been drawn to violence and discrimination. Malouf and Golding employ a range of literary techniques to express these ideas. Malouf and Golding s narrative perspectives vary to portray a unique perspective on the issues of human nature. Malouf writes in third person omniscient with a narrator, however changes the focus to specific characters throughout each chapter, becoming third person limited. This allows readers to understand the mind set of the settlers surrounding Gemmy s arrival however for the perspective to remain unbiased. An example of visual imagery within the ad is the picture on the front right side of JJ Watt dragging a sled while wearing the Pump shoes. This picture gives added meaning to the shoes. Usually, such drills as the one depicted are performed with cleats by football players for the added grip provided. However, in the picture in the ad, JJ Watt does the drill with a pair of the Pump shoes. Because he is doing it in those shoes, this example of visual imagery is showing how these shoes, the Pump, can replace cleats because of how good they are and how good grip they provide. That their grip is incredibly good and reliable, thus making the shoe, the Pump, appear even better. This example of visual imagery then contributes to the author s purpose. Because it shows how these shoes can be as good as cleats with their great and reliable grip, and maybe even better than cleats because JJ Watt is using them for his shoes in the drill rather than using cleats, it enforces the statement that the shoes the Pump are perfect. By the attempt to eliminate the price effect from an index fund, the fundamental index managers change the set up of the index in such a way that it automatically changes the basic characteristics of the index. As shown in exhibit 10 of the Research Affiliate case, fundamental indices usually not only deal with a higher turnover ratio but also with a higher net expense ratio, for implementing the fundamental strategy in reality seems to go hand in hand with higher costs. Looking at commonly used multiples in exhibit 11, we see no surprises. While the P/E ratio for the RAFI index is only slightly smaller compared to the Russell 1000 index, the Price to Book/Cash Flow/Sales ratio is fundamentally lower in all categories for the RAFI index. More interesting is the fact that the RAFI index is composed of companies with an on average lower market capitalization as well as a higher leverage ratio, which might be a hint that the RAFI is also taking on more risk to produce the excess returns. Even though Research Affiliates uses several methods to eliminate a bias towards a specific sector/type of company, research shows that fundamental indices are clearly more exposed to value and small stocks, which is further illustrated in exhibits 12 14. How the descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because different interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from generation to generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed, while others say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a slang term. For some, the phrase seems to represent death and destruction whereas others use it synonymously with deception. No other species has had such a huge impact on the world compared to that of humans. Being able to manipulate the environment to better suit their needs, but for every action there is an opposite and sometimes an even greater consequence. Many signs point to a great extinction occurring at this moment and it has correlation with the beginning of the Homo sapiens expansion, more increasingly with the rise of the Industrial Era. Human hands have managed to touch every species on earth in one shape or another, and there is nowhere for them to escape to. This great extinction, though not to the magnitude of the five previous mass extinctions has the potential to rival them. Through the manipulation of various physical components, a designer can set a mood, that seems to fill the void in a space which is important as an artwork cannot be grasped solely through its concrete qualities (Bohme, 1993, p116). An important idea within this atmospheric appreciation is that it is how we perceive a space, which creates our mood.
