Benjamin Franklin, a politician turned scientist, was known for many things, including his
involvement with the Patriots during the Revolutionary War, his printing skills, and many famous
experiments that happened after his turn into the subject of science. Benjamin Franklin was born on
January 17, 1706 in Boston. He was the tenth son of Josiah Franklin, a soap maker, and Abiah Folger.
His kite experiment exemplifies Virgil s quote as an act of bravery to get excellent consequences. Ben
Franklin believed that lightning was electricity, and that it might be transferable, which could prove
that it was indeed electricity. He proved it with this experiment. On a gloomy June afternoon in 1752
Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin, then 46, decided to fly his new homemade kite. He tied an iron key
to a silk string, then attached it to a kite. Franklin held onto a silk ribbon fixed onto the key. He moved
into the barn so as to not get wet. The negative charges from the lightning traveled from the kite all the
way to the key. Ben didn t get shocked because the ribbon provided insulation, but when he touched
the iron key, he got an electrical shock. He knew the ramifications of doing this experiment, which
included death. But he still did it, and along with it, came marvelous outcomes, still useful today. He
