Impact Of The Enlightenment On Modern Political Thought
David Wolkoff
English 9CP/Western Civ.
Mrs. Orens/Mr. Reiss
April 1, 2016 The Impact of the Enlightenment on Modern Political Thought
The philosopher John Locke once said, [g]overnment has no other end, but the preservation of
property ( John Locke ). The social contract is the fundamental basis for modern government. This
idea affects everything we believe a modern state should represent for itself and its people. This way
of understanding the role of government was inspired by the writings of the Enlightenment era
philosophers. This way of understanding the role of the state and its people is significantly different
from what was believed in ancient Athens and Rome. The Enlightenment era philosophers did more
than just think of new ideas of government; their works not only inspired changes during the 18th
century, but also continued to shape modern governments. While it is true that certain forms of
democracy evolved in ancient Athens and Rome, modern governments differ significantly from
these ancient societies. In some cases, the very words put forth by the philosophers were written
directly into the constitutions of countries practicing these new ideas. Without the contributions of
John Locke and other enlightenment philosophers, democracy and government as we know it
today would not exist.
The shape of modern government in America and Europe today comes from many different ideas
that existed before the Enlightenment even began. Concepts in ancient Greece are

Fire And Post Fire Management
Introduction
In 2005, Pomeroy, Washington experienced a storm with multiple lightning strikes causing
ignitions that started a large scale fire. This was designated as the School Fire Complex the
location of our study (Figure 1). The fire burned for fourteen days, consuming 21,000 hectares of
land, including 87 buildings and 56% of the Umatilla National Forest Land. Almost half the
federally owned land had been previously thinned for fire management (MODIS 2005). During
the 2015 Fire Ecology and Management class (FOR 326) field trip to the School Fire Complex, the
class surveyed a series of sites in order to create a research project to obtain a better understanding
of fire and post fire management. The goal of this research is to ... Show more content on

Both hypothesizes can be combined to one; that if an area is high severity, high pre fire density, and
logged (HHL) it will have a higher density than the high severity, low pre fire density, and logged
(HLL).
Methods
The lands that burned during this fire were mainly comprised of a mixed conifer forest. The main
tree species found before and after the fire are Douglas fir, grand fir, Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa
pine; PIPO), and Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine; PICO). Other species found include other
varieties of spruce, pine, and larch. In some areas of the site a rich understory has formed or still
exists; these were dominated by Salix scouleriana (Scouler s willow; SASC) with a limited
variety of forbs present beneath the shrubs. Post fire management tactics included salvage logging
and grass seeding. This seeding of native grasses was spread across burned areas in combination
with mulch in the form of agriculture straw as well as shredded wood strips (Robichaud, 2009).
In order to collect data, protocol was followed as described in by P. Morgan and P. Higueraa s
(YEAR)School Fire Field Trip Handout and Assignment packet. In September 2015 the FOR 326
class from University of Idaho followed this protocol to find and collect data from 32 sites on two
different days. To determine site locations, trip leaders took each group to a random pre determined
area that corresponded with fire

Examples Of Rivalry In Hamlet
In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, there are multiple of characters who seduce their enemy into
their death and by avenging the death of their loved ones. Rivalries among characters are one of
the constant themes that we happen to see throughout Hamlet. Not only does rivalry or revenge as
you would like to say it inhabit in almost every scene of the play, nevertheless it has a great
outcome in Hamlet. Throughout Hamlet, there happens to be multiple of conflicts in which
characters want to avenge the death of someone in their family who has passed away. In the play
Hamlet intends to avenge his father s death by killing King Claudius, Laertes plans to kill Hamlet,
and on the other hand, Fortinbras wants to take back his father s land that his... Show more content

was responsible for the whole thing. Laertes then Vows to the blackest devil! only I ll be

in a plan to kill Hamlet. Laertes asks Claudius to come up with a fencing match in which he

Saurating Concentration Of Sodium Chloride And Sucrose
The purpose of this lab was to find and compare the saturating concentration of Sodium Chloride
(NaCl) and Sucrose. By making solutions of NaCl in water at different concentration, we found that
the saturating concentration NaCl is between 0.375g/ml and 0.500g/ml. Using the same method,
we found that the saturating concentration of sucrose is 0.750g/ml. Moreover, to further our
understanding of density, we created a discontinuous density gradient using different concentration
of sucrose solutions. When we placed the solutions in the test tube according to their relative
density, we found that the solutionwith highest concentration sinks at bottom and the solution with
lowest concentration stays on top. Therefore, we concluded that the higher the density of a solution
is, the lower it will sink in a mixture.
Introduction In this experiment, we make solutions and explore three types of solutions: saturated,
unsaturated, and supersaturated solutions. A solution is homogeneous mixture of one or more
solutes dissolved in a solvent. Many different kinds of solutions exist because solutes and solvents
can be a gas, a liquid or a solid. For example, Air is a solution consisting mostly of oxygen and
nitrogen with trace amounts of several other gases. Furthermore, saturated solutions contain the
maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a solvent at a specific temperature
(Helmenstine). On the other hand, unsaturated solutions can dissolve more solutions in the solvent

Narrative Essay About The Little Mermaid
My uncle was an amazing singer, and a great uncle that had a lot going for him. You would see
him on his Youtube channel creating new arrangements for his accapella group SanFran 6 or
practicing new lines for a show. Me and my family went to watch him portray as Scuttle in The
Little Mermaid play. By the end of the play, we went outside and waited for my uncle to join us
for celebratory pizza and ice cream. Little did I know, my whole perspective on life was about to
change. A month or so passed and my mom had called me and my siblings in for a talk. You
guys, she said and took a deep breath your Uncle Kevin is missing. At that very moment my
whole world came crumbling down into reality, where the saying Life isn t fair had come into
play. What...? all of us said in unison as we couldn t believe what we had just heard. I m going
to California to go look for him, my mom explained. The day she left wasn t really that different.
At first, my siblings and I thought it was just some misunderstanding and he would be back. A
week later, my mom was back and he was still missing. My mom waited and waited for results on
his whereabouts, but me and my siblings just went about our day. That was until my mom had
called us in again for another talk. Sweethearts, she said in almost the same tone but more upset ,
they said your uncle may have jumped off the Bay Bridge... Tears just rolled down our cheeks

In the introduction of The Death and life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs acknowledges city

resources and support.
In her introduction of The Death and life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs introduces city
planning and presents the reader with real life view. She also explains the principles of planning
and the effects it contains on social and economic issues. Jacobs highlights the theory of
beautification and the lack of city planners understanding the needs of the general people. She
continues by acknowledging the Decentrists and the common disciplines with modern city planners

Jacobs addresses the most common idea of city planning as beautification and questions the
effect it has on restoring a neighborhood. Jacobs states Handsome is as Handsome does. All that
glitters are not gold (Jacobs 15). As much as the city can be beautified and full of parks and land
it does not make up for the needs of the people. Jacob provides the example of a housing project
and a lawn; Everyone in the housing project was upset and seem to have an opinion on having a
lawn, when someone finally asked why and bothered to listen to the people, they realized that the
people wanted a space to come together but unfortunately no one had bothered to ask. (15)
Unfortunately, due to the lack of resources it is house projects like this that are often referred to as
slums. Jacobs explains that ideally tax money would be used to fix the communities and allow for
beautification. However due to economical stance of many neighborhoods and the city planning
ideology it seems close to impossible. Jacobs writes Bankers, like planers have theories about cities
on which they act... They are enlightened

Francis Bacon as Shakespeare
Francis Bacon as Shakespeare For almost four hundred years the question of who truly wrote the
works attributed to William Shakespeare has been studied meticulously by many scholars and
historians. There have been many well qualified contenders, including Sir Francis Bacon. Because
of the incredible number of coincidences between Shakespeare and Bacon, it is obvious that Bacon
wrote Shakespeare. Firstly, the actor William Shakespeare, who is the supposed author of
Shakespeare s works, could not have written them. He had no formal education after thirteen,
was from a small provincial town, was a professional actor, had two daughters who were
illiterate, didn t mention any of his works in his will, and whose only surviving handwriting is
six signatures on legal documents (Rubenstein 69). Shakespeare is considered one of the
greatest authors in history, and without a formal education the intricacy of his work would be
impossible. It should also be put in consideration that many of Shakespeare s works were not
only published but edited after his death. From the publication of The Taming of the Shrew in
1594 to the publication of the First Folio in 1623, 4,936 new lines were added to the plays, a
majority of which were added posthumously (sirbacon). This in itself is evidence enough to
disprove Shakespeare entirely. Unlike William Shakespeare, Sir Francis Bacon was very well
qualified to have written Shakespeare s works. Bacon was a highly educated Member of

Disputes At Various Stages Of M A Agreements
ARBITRABLE DISPUTES AT VARIOUS STAGES OF M A AGREEMENTS
From the very inception of a contract for merging of two companies or acquisition of one by the
other to the very closing of the final deed, several disputes arise between the parties involved in
these transactions. This is mainly because generally, both parties have substantial economic
interests invested in the particular deal and are looking to gain the maximum monetary advantage
out of the same. This leads to an obvious conflict of interests as both parties attempt to put their
agenda before the other party s motive. As mentioned above, arbitration proves to be a more
successful dispute resolution mechanism as compared to litigious means, mainly due to
jurisdictional and enforceability issues. Thus, most M A agreements contain a definite arbitration
clause that duly states that in case of dispute(s), either of the parties can seek to resolve it by
arbitral means.
As a broad classification, the disputes arising out of a M A contract may be broadly classified into
two categories:
Pre closing disputes o Memorandum of Understanding o Confidentiality and Exclusivity
Agreements o Due Diligence
Post closing disputes o Representation and Warranties o Earn out clauses Price Adjustment o
Valuation Expert Determinations o Put and Sale Options o Anti Trust and Competition
Pre closing disputes
M A transactions usually start with initial investigative talks, an information memorandum, the

Comparing Jocasta In The Odyssey And Oedipus
Most seems to enjoy tight casting female characters through two tropes: either the damsel in
distress waiting for her knight in shining armor to save her, or a tough, power indulged witch
who s only concern is herself. Very few times (and by even fewer male authors) will a female
character be written as a medium between the two extremes. This problem has been occurring
for centuries almost, even being found in literature dating back to B.C., with Penelope from
Homer s The Odyssey and Jocasta from Sophocles Oedipus Rex : Penelope being written as the
damsel with hundreds of suitors vying for her attention, all while desperately weaving and
waiting day in and day out for her true love to come home; Jocasta as this harsh women who only
wants to be around when everything is working to her advantage. Then there s Antigone, who
stands up for her morals against Thebes without so much as batting an eye. The Odyssey tells the
story of Odysseus, ruler of Ithaca who has been lost out at sea for the past 20 years after the Trojan
war. At home waiting is his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope. Unsurprisingly Telemachus with

At first glance, it was exciting to see a woman dominate that severely in a man s world; but much
like Lady Macbeth, all Jocasta had were her tough edges and a hunger for whatever power her
family could get. When Oedipus presented her with the soothsayer s report about how he killed
his father and will inevitably bed his mother keep in mind, Jocasta knew this was all true she put
so much effort into making Oedipus believe that this wasn t true and that it was impossible
(Sophocles 38). Later on when Oedipus found out Jocasta was his own mother, Jocasta later killed
herself before she had to face responsibility for her actions to more than just Oedipus and his men.

The Role Of Violence In The White Tiger By Aravind Adiga
It cannot fairly be said that in Aravind Adiga s novel, The White Tiger, the only way to escape
the Darkness and advance in society is through violence, as an alternative route to the Light is
presented in the story arc of Vijay, the pig herder s son turned politician. Balram asserts that the
murder of Ashok is not only the direct cause of his new wealth and status, but also the only
possible trigger for his newfound social mobility. Yet, this is contradicted earlier in the story
when he presents Vijay, the bus driver, as his role model for a successful person. Vijay, in order
to achieve his elevated position, resorted to prostitution; despite not being a desirable alternative
to violence, it is an alternative all the same and therefore violence is not the only way to escape
the Darkness. Following this logic, it is Balram s story and the immediate increase in wealth that
results from the murder of Ashok that best supports violence as the only means of moving into the
Light, and Vijay s story is the best evidence against that point of view.
Although Balram argues that violence is his only way of overcoming the poverty he is born into,
Vijay, a manborn into status even lower than Balram s, achieves power and wealth without
resorting to violence. Initially Balram presents Vijay as his role model, condoning the rumors of
his prostitution in order to advance socially. He portrays Vijay as the first entrepreneur [he] knew
of and a man who had made it in life (26), thereby

Analysis Of Wings By Aprilynne Pike And The Hobbit
Wings by Aprilynne Pike and The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien are two books that have challenged my
reading skills and the way I think about achieving accomplishments that are considered impossible.
These books are classified under the same genre fantasy and through character development my
view of this genre as an uninteresting and unrealistic genre is challenged.
The Hobbit was a more challenging text to read. The perspective of the story kept changing
through the story making it confusing on whose point of view it was. In chapter 5 Bilbo refers
to himself as I, I don t know where he came from, nor who nor what he was. The majority of the
story is written in a third person perspective however it is occasionally written in the second and
first person perspective. The amount of excessive description about the environment made these
parts of the text tedious and challenging to read. I was tempted to skip these pasts however I
found my vocabulary increasing, improving my reading skills as I persisted to read these parts of
the story.
Pike s, Wings was a much easier and interesting text to read as the story was set in a high school
environment and the language was more straightforward and easy to understand. However, the last
part of the plot challenged me and I was disappointed with the way things turned out. Laurel had to
choose between the two supporting characters and the other one was rejected. This shows that in
life you will need to give up certain things to get what you

The sensation of a moist tongue swirling around the indentation of his navel woke Booker from

Facilitating And Inhibiting Factors For Learning A Language
Facilitating and inhibiting factors in learning a language in second language contexts Despite a
marked difference in terms of their level of proficiency in English, Rodi and Liam managed to
develop the same level of proficiency (high level of proficiency) in using Indonesian language.
From their reports, summarised in Table 1 above, it is quite obvious to see that social contexts
where the language is learned constitutes a very important factor that helped both learners develop
their proficiency. That is to say, the abundance of input available in the social settings helped them
conceptualise the target language systems more easily and thus enable them to cope with
producing output more effectively thereafter. Of course, the abundance of input available in the
social setting is useless unless the learners make use of it, and such quality is what differentiates
good from poor language learners (Rubin, 1975). Being immersed in a speech community seems to
also raise motivation in learning the language of the community itself. Such motivation is primarily
related to survival. In other words, the two learners faced immediate needs where they had to be
able to communicate with the new community where they lived in so that they were able to
maintain social relationship with them and, more importantly, to fulfil their daily needs. As such,
the learners perceived that learning Indonesian was meaningful and compelling. Such perception
therefore might impose a great demand on the

Cursive Writing Should Be Taught In Schools
The arguments presented are provided with informative information. Both auther s points of views

With the idea that cursive writing exercises the left and the right hemosphere of the brain, this is
something that should be imparitive for school childred. Especially since the brain doesn t stop

For one reading aloud lesson, the teacher used the popcorn reading strategy. She did most of the
reading, but every once in a while she picked one of the students to take over. I think that this
was a great way to handle the book that they were reading because there was some difficult
vocabulary in the section that they read that day. This style helped me to realize that even
though they are in 4 th grade, the students do not have to be responsible for all of the reading all
of the time. It is a good thing to give them a break every so often and just let them enjoy the story
through following along. However, I did like that she would stop about every other paragraph
and ask questions about tough vocabulary and what was happening in the story. This is a great
way to make sure that the students were really following along and not staring at the floor or off
into space. She also was able to insert a minilesson review on using context clues to figure out the
meaning of an unknown word. Since she knew which students would be comfortable reading the
material in front of the whole class and which would not, the teacher was able to choose the
confident readers to do the reading aloud and have the others answer the questions.
With buddy reading, I think that it is a great way for a strong reader to help a struggling reader.
As a class read their material in pairs, I heard one little girl encourage her partner who was

Living A Health Conscious Lifestyle
Like many children, I went through the ubiquitous why stage. I constantly posed this question, even
to the smallest and most mundane events in life. Filled with genuine curiosity and love of learning,
I desired to understand the ornate workings of the world. Unlike the majority of children, however,
I did not lose this fervor and drive to find answers. This inquisitiveness laid the foundation for my
interest in researchwork. Growing up, my family placed a tremendous emphasis on health, fitness,
and nutrition.
From an early age, I appreciated the value of living a health conscious lifestyle. However, when my
older sister, Melissa, began to struggle with an eating disorder, I saw the detrimental effects that
occur when this healthy lifestyle is amplified to an all consuming extreme. Witnessing the immense
ramifications and toil that this disorder had on her instigated my interest in the psychology of eating
disorders and led me to countless questions that began with why? . Although this was in keeping
with my inquisitive nature, this time my questions evoked not only a search for answers but a
distinctive and enduring academic quest. By the time I was in 6th grade, I had confidently decided
I would obtain my PhD in clinical psychology. In an academic light, I sought to cultivate a
professional comprehension of eating disorders and dissect their intricate nature and the various
methods of treatment. My aspiration to pursue an active role in this field is chiefly

from their town as war heroes. Kantorek set off some excitement for the war in all of these
young men by doing so. When they reached the front they become conscious that war was no
where near how they imagined it would be. Paul then realized that after a war like this he would
not return to society and be able to fit in ever again. The war totally changed who he once had
been. Soldiers go home and don t know how to act around their families, and the people they
grew up with. They have seen so much death and violence that they don t know what a lifestyle
or friendship is. Life is very different for them. On page 165 Paul says, I am young, I am twenty
years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an
abyss of sorrow. Remarque adds these thoughts by Paul throughout the book. Paul is over taken by
this war and will never be the same person ever

My Love Short Story
I always thought that I did not need anyone but myself. A black and white world with only
myself in it. I never really cared for anyone; if I did they would be a family or a close friend.
Anything romantic was always thrown out of the window. I did not want to think about love or
even pay attention to it. That all changed when I fell in love. It changed my whole world and how I
viewed it. It is not just liking someone and being in a relationship; love is so much more than that.
Love is a wonderful feeling. Love took me to places I have never been before; it taught me a lot
about myself; it is a wild roller coaster ride.
It all started when I first met him. At the time, I did not think more than our growing friendship.
We had countless conversations about ourselves, other people, and just about anything. I
learned our about similarities and differences. I would often laugh at how predictable he is
sometimes. Our differences on the other hand did not hinder our relationship. I found it
interesting how he could talk and it would captivate me. The way he would tell stories or write a
poem is like a gift. His voice is deep and melodious, which made him sound like he was singing
instead of speaking. He is smarter than anyone I have ever met; a genius is a better word.
Despite being smart, he was like a child. He often acts like a mischievous little rascal. I became
attached to him. He became a drug that I got addicted to. His gentle face made my heart flutter

The Tempest Chaos
People always complain about how their life is so chaotic, but they don t give it time to come to
order. In The Tempest , William Shakespeare uses his final play to show that chaos can come to
order in a matter of time. The play starts out and island after a shipwreck that Prospero tells Ariel
to make. Later on in the play the people that were on the ship finds out Prospero is responsible
for the storm. After the shipwreck they are all scattered around the Island. Caliban Trinculo, and
Stephano think it s only five people on the island. At the end of the play they all come together
and Prospero gives up all of his powers. In The Tempest , different settings, such as the shipwreck

Throughout the novel, we see him being apathetic towards the people of the society, his mother,
his girlfriend, and his neighbors. He does not seem to care too much about social norms. He
views the world from a different perspective. He stands for what he believes in. He does not get
overwhelmed with any types of emotions. Although sometimes he does try to view the world as
others do, but maybe that is too late for him to do. Before his execution, the Chaplain comes to
try to make him believe in the faith, pray for forgiveness but he refuses how he refused the
magistrate. He does not think it is a necessary thing for him to do. He does not support the idea
of forcefully believing something. At the very end of the novel he says, For all to be
accomplished, for me to feel less lonely, all that remained to hope was that on the day of my
execution there should be a huge crowd of spectators and that they should greet me with howls
of execration (Camus, 75). The quote is said by Meursault as he feels that he deserves the

The Impact Of Emission Trading
My business idea is to create a personal emission trading system, which will help governments to

As the name suggests, this type of training should take place in situ or in an environment where
the staff can get exposure to potential challenging behaviors or crises through role play. When
researching these methods, the following study surfaced. Researchers evaluated the effects of
behavioral skills training (BST) with in situ training (IST) to teach safety skills to 4 7 year old
children. The ten participants were evaluated when they found a gun, on their demonstration of
safety skills. In order to prevent gun play, the children were taught appropriate safety skills using
modeling, rehearsal and feedback (Miltenberger, 65). In addition, simulated situ training (SIT) and
in situ training were compared between all participants. Results of this study demonstrated that SIT

tool, and the skills acquired were generalized and maintained over months. It is essential to provide
in situ training to staff, as this is the best opportunity for skill development and feedback. While

How Does Steinbeck Present The Theme Of Loneliness In Of...
Kensa Fradd Walker Of Mice and Men The Main Themes So far in the book, Of Mice and Men,
John Steinbeck has introduced three main themes dreams, loneliness/isolation, and friendship
/companionship. These three themes all link together in the way that most of the characters, in
Steinbeck s microcosm of society, dream of a friend to cure their loneliness. Whilst everyone on
the ranch dreams of a companion, George and Lennie dream of having their own ranch. They
dream to have this ranch so that no one can fire them and they can be their own boss. When they
are talking in the bunkhouse and Candy overhears, they come up with a plan on how they are going

Loneliness follows all of the characters except for George and Lennie, because they have each
other. Their dream of owning the farm is their way of breaking the pattern of loneliness. In
addition to dreams, humans long for human contact to give their lives meaning. The vast majority
of the migrant workers travel alone and Slim once says I seen the guys that go around on the
ranches alone. That ain t no good. They don t have no fun. After a long time they get mean.
Steinbeck reinforces the theme of loneliness in subtle and not so subtle ways. Near the ranch, for
example, is the town of Soledad. The town s name, not accidentally, means solitude or alone . The
others reactions to George and Lennie traveling together reinforces that, in Steinbeck s world,
traveling with someone else is unusual. When George and Lennie arrive at the ranch, four other
characters the boss, Candy, Crooks, and Slim all comment on the suspicious nature of two guys
traveling together. This

Unrealistic Tenant Expectations
Managing unrealistic tenant expectations is an unavoidable challenge that every property
management teams will eventually face. The reality is that community managers, leasing staff and
office personnel are human, and are subject to the same time and space constraints that tenants and
other mortals face. While you cannot expect to always agree with a resident s point of view, it s
important to at least consider the opposing lens.
As you read through the following four tips for managing tenant disputes and requests for special

But, saying no effectively shuts down the conversation. When a tenant comes to you with a special
request, it is critical to make sure you understand what he wants or needs from you before you
respond. Ask for more information. You might be surprised that to learn that allowing the resident
to explain why he has the need or what he is trying to accomplish will take far less time than
listening to the demands and complaints that an immediate no elicits.
Make it clear you want to help resolve the issue, within the boundaries of what you can do.
Reassuring your resident you understand their need goes a long way toward defusing a tense,

If there are medical, legal or policy impediments to carving out an exception for your tenant,
explain that calmly. Including phrases such as, Our owner s wont allow . . . or Our company

Degree In Nursing
Nurses need many different job skills in order to succeed within this profession. Attention to
detail is important due to the fact that he or she will help doctors operate, administer medication,
and work with treatments that could be crucial to the individual. Another job skill is the need to
be calm under pressure. Nurses are faced with many emergencies such as life or death situations
where they will need to exhibit compassion to the pain and trauma of the individual (Bratcher,

proactively trying to stay that way), to those who are pregnant and bringing new life, to those
who are nearing the end of life and hoping for a peaceful death. Registered nurses must have one

The Gap Between Advanced Northern Countries And Developing...
The developmental gap between advanced northern countries and developing southern countries has
endured for centuries. The gaps primary cause is a lack of strong stable institutions in developing
countries. The institutional failure is due, at least in part, to colonialism, which allowed for uneven
northern development predicated upon southern subjugation and abuse. Within enslaved colonies,
the colonizers installed poor institutions that would impact the country s ability to later function as
a sovereign nation. Following the end of the colonial era, the developed North would supply policy
recommendations or requirements along side aid to help the South develop. These policies lacked
provisions to improve institutions within developing countries, proving to be monumental barriers
for the South to catch up to the North. In addition, modern protectionist flare ups have stalled
global trade reverting back to bilateral or regional trade agreements that are more harmful for
developing countries. Bad institutions coupled with a lack of trade and investment pose as a further
hindrance to development. The end of the colonial era may have felt like a huge step forward for
newly sovereign nations, but in fact for some it would prove to be just as, or more detrimental than
colonialism. Author Daron Acemoglu offers an institutional hypothesis that essentially points to
good institutions as the catalyst that would eventually lead a country to economic prosperity

Worlds Beyond The Solar System
When we think of planets we do not often consider planets outside the friendly neighborhood of
our Solar System. Our universe is constantly expanding with billions of galaxies inside of it, and to
think all these galaxies hold nothing but stars is preposterous. If the planets in the Milky Way
revolve around the Sun, there must be other celestial bodies revolving around stars elsewhere in
space. Extrasolar planets, commonly called exoplanets, are planets that orbit stars outside the Solar
System, but what makes such exoplanets actual planets and not just free floating objects moving
through space? These celestial bodies must follow three requirements to be classified as planets,
stated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) regarding the solar system, a planet must:
orbit a star, have enough mass so that the star s gravity pulls it into an elliptical orbit, and it must
be gravitationally dominant, so that no other bodies of similar size hold a gravitational influence
besides the planet s own satellites.
Now having known of exoplanets, what are they? How many are there? Say approximately one
star holds one exoplanet in its orbit, then multiply this by 300 billion stars per galaxy, and then
multiply this by the amount of galaxies in our universe; this is the expanse of the exoplanets we
are dealing with. The first discovery of a planet outside the

Iroquois Confederacy Research Paper
The roots of the Mohawk tribe, to begin with, date back to the 1600s Iroquois Confederacy
/Iroquois League/Five Nations/Haudenosaunee that comprised a confederation of five Indian tribes
(and later six) that occupied upper New York during the 17th and 18th centuries and that played a
critical role in the struggle between the British and the French for the control of North America. The
five nations characterized themselves as the members of the longhouse and included the Oneida,

Certain areas of measurements was harder to take than other areas because of it s angle. It was
harder to take skin fold measurements on a participant who did not have much fat on their body.
It was also difficult to take measurements when the participant was in multiple layers of clothes.
The potential sources of error when measuring circumferences and skeletal diameters can occur if
the administrator does not properly measure the specific areas. Measuring too high or too low of a
certain area can skew accuracy. It is also important for the administrator to remember to stand on
the right side of the participant. Not accurately reading the measuring tape can result in error. For
example, reading inches instead of centimeters would cause error. For my skin fold measurements,
body fat percentage was between twenty five and thirty five percent. For BIA, my body fat

Sex Hormones And Its Effect On Gender
Introduction. Gender is complex (Lippa, A R 1994) there are unlimited influences that affect
each and every one of us as we develop as human beings; we are all unique models, shaped not
only by our DNA but also by the physical and emotional environment in which we find ourselves
including our biological genes, sex hormones and ongoing genetic and hormonal changes can be
defined as nature and influence physical development and sexual identity while family
background, class and belief systems, described as nurture affect gender through the
encouragement of social norms and familiar gender roles. (Fausto Sterling, A 2008) Away from
the biological, peer group influences, such as school friends and their families also reinforce
gender stereotypes while in the wider world mass media, from children s TV to advertising

The exhibition curators attempted to create an exhibition that went further than display of
historical artifacts to tell a story of the past to make it relatable to visitors today as considering
objects, images, and first person accounts of a variety of people across time can cultivate our
narrative imaginations and help us better understand our diverse nation (Salazar Porzio and
Troyano 20). The exhibition highlights topics such as ethnic diversity, equality, and freedom, so
that as a nation we might go beyond simple acknowledgement of our past, present, and future
diversity to focus on building an equitable and inclusive society (Salazar Porzio and Troyano 16).
The exhibition begins by displaying objects from some of the first groups to immigrate to the
United States and continues with broad themes of more contemporary issues regarding immigration
today. The show progresses chronologically, but also organizes groups by geography. The
assortment of type of objects included in each display section tells a story about the history of each
immigrant group. Additionally, Nancy Davis, curator in the division of home and community life,
project director and one of the organizers of the exhibition...says the sheer variety in the display
shows that history continues to be written especially in regards to the sections on modern
immigration stories (Catlin). During the time

Psalm 23 Analysis
Psalm 23 The Holy Bible, NIV, (1996) explains that David authored Psalm 23 and that his
writing reveals the need for us to turn to God as our shepherd for all of our needs. He begins the
Psalm with The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name (Psalm 23: 1 3). Immediately, two important corresponding elements
appear, which include green meadows and peaceful streams . Davidis explaining the difference
between a sinful life and one that allows the lord to guide it. Life has an abundance of difficulty,
however if we obey and allow Godto direct it we will find that contentment much easier (Bullock,
2004).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Psalm is written to thank the Lord for all that he does Even when I walk through the dark
valley of death, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and
comfort me (Psalm 23: 4). Likewise, it was written to demonstrate David s appreciation for all that
the Lord has done for him. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You welcome
me as a guest, anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings (Psalm 23: 5). David
does not appear to be calling for help or turning to God in need, but only to express his immense
gratitude for the blessings that have been bestowed on him (Bullock, 2004). Surely your goodness
and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever (Psalm 23: 6). David expresses his endless love for God in this Psalm and illustrates to the
reader that if we remain faithful God will deliver. If God is obeyed he will continue to be a loving
shepherd and meet our

China s Economic Reform
China s economic reform has attracted worldwide attention. From the early stage of mainly
export oriented industries with cheaper labour costs to more recent foreign investments aiming
to tap the huge domestic market, China, especially eastern region has gradually opened up to
the rest of the world. While this research study is not only of vital importance to China, but also
meaningful to the FDI development efforts to the individual regions in other countries. This
research provides the empirical evidence that GDP which proxies for the market size was a
great attraction power for FDI in China. The labour quality and the level of infrastructure are
positively connected with the FDI growth and become crucial determinants of the FDI
distribution in eastern China.Besides, the degree of openness and labour costs show the negative
relevance to the FDI in The twenty first century is a century of intellectual competition; thus the
human capital of knowledge, intelligence and labour quality will surely be crucial factors
relative to FDI. Past studies (Bhagwati and Srinivasan, 1983; Sun et al., 2002)also found a
correlation between the level of labour quality and FDI. The development of labour quality is a
key point to both export oriented FDI and market seeking FDI. But on the Chinese mainland, for
every 100,000 people, there are only 3,611 who have received a higher education and 11,146 ones
who have received a secondary school education. There are 85 million illiterate people

Essay on Owen Meany
Essay On: A Prayer For Owen Meany In the novel A Prayer For Owen Meany, John Irving
creates the character of Owen as a foil to John, the protagonist. Owen Meany embodies the
qualities of a true leader while John grows more like his father: doubtful and lost. nbsp; nbsp;
nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;In the beginning of the novel, immediately there is a clear difference between
Owen and Johnny. There is the field of academics; Owen is the head of his class while he helps
John not to fail in his studies. There is Owen, very sure of his belief system and Johnny, very
doubtful and unsure about his beliefs or feelings towards god. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;
nbsp;Throughout the novel, John has a constant hero worship of Owen. An example of this is...

When Owen follows his mission and goes to the army, John is left without a sense of direction.
With Owen gone, he has no one to tell him what his next move will consist of. He ends up going
into graduate school because he fears the day when he actually has to make a decision about
what he will do for the rest of his life. Technically he does make a decision for the rest of his life
by going to school for a degree in English, but I see this as the easy way out. Owen has no
hesitation when it comes to his future and his decision making: Owen Meany got his
scholarship to the University of New Hampshire; he signed up for the ROTC... This certainty
could also stem from Owen s strong relationship with god. He is gods instrument, making every
action meaningful, making every move count. John has a weak relationship with god and is left
doubting the existence of a higher power and a purpose for himself. The productivity deck is
stacked in Owens favor because John has to play his own game; he is not just a chess piece
being directed by God. He has no idea if his next day will be his last or if his next decision will
matter in the least, where as Owen just follows his road map to the date on his grave. nbsp; nbsp;
nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; There is a Motif in this book that pertains to Casualties in Vietnam. Through John
we see the crippling effects of the War in Vietnam on citizens across America. We see his
indecision for the direction of the rest of his life.

The Wrestler, By Darren Aronofsky Essay
The human condition, or what it means to be human, is a term the encoumpasses the innate and
unchangable aspects of human nature. It is the unique and inherent features of being human,
uninfluenced by factors such as race, class, gender or time. This idea has been examined through
literature for hundreds of years by the likes of Shakespeare, who through his philosophical depth
has given profound insights into human nature. As Noam Chomsky expressed it is quite possible
overwhelmingly probable, one might guess that we will always learn more about human life and
personality from novels than from scientific psychology. Darren Aronofsky s 2008 film The
Wrestler, due to its emotive exploration of what it means to be human, is strikingly compelling and
speaks to the audience on a human level. The film is a poignant portrayal of a washed up wrestler,
Randy, in the twilight of his career. Through Randy, Aronofsky is able to explore intrinsic
characteristics that define the human condition such as humans need for relationships and
connections, search for recognition, and awareness of the inevitability of death. Cormac McCarthy
s The Road is an exemplary novel which discusses the human condition and where these ideas are
also seen. Texts that explore what it means to be human are most compelling as they impart
knowledge about aspects of human nature that reside in us all, and rous strong feelings of interest
among the reader or audience. Sociality is essential to human

The Role Of Media Management On Crisis Communication
The importance of media management in crisis communication
Introduction
Crisis according to Laura (2013, p. 51), can be defined as any situation that threatens harms or
cause panic among people. Crisis may occur due to accidents, war, and flood or fire attack. During
this period, the public, who may be affected by the crisis because they are found in the situation or
their next of kin are involved in it, rely on a lot of information that is relayed by the media.
Because of this, the media must be careful of what they report. The information that the media
convey to the public according to Laura (2013, p. 50) may cool the situation, and reduce the tension
that has been built by the parties concerned. However, if they are not mindful of ... Show more

also researched on how the media should play this role. For instance, Taffel, A., in the year 2007
did research on how to enhance Public Relations During the crisis (Taffel 2011, p. 112). In his
research, Taffel observed that, it is necessary to monitor the information that is relied on the public
so that, the image of the agency that is in crisis is not tarnished. In his research, Taffel had
suggested that the organization must balance the information that o is relayed the public (Taffel
2011, p. 112). He observes that, it is necessary to balance between truths and lies so that the level of
tension is reduced. In the research, taffel adds that, if the media is allowed to report on everything,
they may kill the reputation that the company has.
In 2011, Yan, J., Brooke, F. L and Lucinda, L. A. did a research on the role of the social media in
effective crisis management. The research had been prompted by the manner in which a lot of
propaganda was spread via the social media during the Arab spring (Yan, Brookes and Lucinder
2011, p.3). In the paper, the researchers observe that, crisis can be best managed by the medal if
they can control the information that they give to the public. The researchers observe that, if the
media gives information that is contradicting, the public may become more anxious.

Speech Free Speech On The Freedom Of Speech
The First Amendment says: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of
religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech or of the
press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble and to petition the government for a
redress of grievances. This freedom of speech clause as included in the First Amendment
guarantees the citizens of America to express information and ideas freely. But is all form of
speech free? On the most basic level, this clause allows for the expression of an opinion or idea
without the fear of censorship by the government. It protects all forms of communication, with
limits so you cannot always say anything you want, wherever you want, or whenever you want.
Fighting words are not protected under the First Amendment, for instance, as are obscene
expressions. Symbolic speech can be expressed in many different kinds of forms. The speech
can be spoken, written, or be an action. All of these kinds of conduct could be said to express
ideas in some ways, however, only some conduct is protected as symbolic speech. When the court
analyzes these types of cases, they will ask the speaker about whether they intended on conveying
a particular message and whether it was likely that the audience understood the message and the
purpose. For a court to decide that some kind of speech is speech that is not protected as speech the
government must prove and show that the speech has an important reason as to not be

The Internet Does Not Represent A Democratisation Of The...
The question that I considered writing about in my essay was The internet does not represent a
democratisation of the media because the online world mirrors the inequalities of the offline world
. The argument I am making is that the offline world does not mirror the inequalities of the online
world. The online world is a huge database that is used to engage emphasis of inequalities of the
offline world. This simply signifies discriminationas being notorious on the online world.
An example of this which I think is a big factor is internet equality, also known as Net Neutrality .
Net neutrality is the principle that all online traffic should be treated equally. If you are paying
for a certain speed of internet connection, you should be able to use that to its full potential all
the time, regardless of which website or service you are accessing. Right now you are paying
one price for your internet connection, companies do not have any right to dictate what you use
that internet for as they can only charge you for the internet itself, but if huge companies such as
Time Warner Cable and Comcast had their way, each month they would charge you extra to
watch Netflix or use Facebook on top of many already trying to impose bandwidth caps on how
much data you can download every month. To put it in to perspective similarly, it would be like a
water company charging you extra because you decided to use your water for coffee instead of the
laundry. The reason why the example

Hypothermia Treatment Of Cardiac Arrest
Hypothermia for Cardiac Arrest
Introduction
Survivors of cardiac arrest often suffer from neurological damage when oxygen to the brain is
depleted. This ischemia to the brain can cause lesions or damaged areas; which can effect any part
of the body that is controlled by that portion of the brain. Decreasing the body temperature of a
patient has shown to be effective in decreasing the amount of damage to the brain. Therapeutic
hypothermia may be a reasonable treatment for patients following cardiac arrest due to its ability to
decrease the impact of ischemia; reducing the number of lesions to the brain and possibly reducing
the patient mortality rate. This paper will discuss the benefits, risks, and Mercy Hospital s protocol
for using therapeutic hypothermia following a cardiac arrest.
Article Summary One In the first article, Caring for Patients Receiving Therapeutic Hypothermia
Post Cardiac Arrest in the Intensive Care Unit , Gardner and MacDonald state that decreasing the
body temperature of a patient to 32В° to 34В° has shown improved outcomes during trials. This
treatment is intended for patients who present with non perfusing ventricular tachycardia or
ventricular fibrillation, are resuscitated to hemodynamic stability, and remain unresponsive
(Gardner MacDonald, p. 15). The article states that brain injury occurs when there is a loss of
oxygen carrying blood flow to the brain. This damage starts at the cellular level and leads to
neurological dysfunction.

  • 2. Impact Of The Enlightenment On Modern Political Thought David Wolkoff English 9CP/Western Civ. Mrs. Orens/Mr. Reiss April 1, 2016 The Impact of the Enlightenment on Modern Political Thought The philosopher John Locke once said, [g]overnment has no other end, but the preservation of property ( John Locke ). The social contract is the fundamental basis for modern government. This idea affects everything we believe a modern state should represent for itself and its people. This way of understanding the role of government was inspired by the writings of the Enlightenment era philosophers. This way of understanding the role of the state and its people is significantly different from what was believed in ancient Athens and Rome. The Enlightenment era philosophers did more than just think of new ideas of government; their works not only inspired changes during the 18th century, but also continued to shape modern governments. While it is true that certain forms of democracy evolved in ancient Athens and Rome, modern governments differ significantly from these ancient societies. In some cases, the very words put forth by the philosophers were written directly into the constitutions of countries practicing these new ideas. Without the contributions of John Locke and other enlightenment philosophers, democracy and government as we know it today would not exist. The shape of modern government in America and Europe today comes from many different ideas that existed before the Enlightenment even began. Concepts in ancient Greece are ... • 3. Fire And Post Fire Management Introduction In 2005, Pomeroy, Washington experienced a storm with multiple lightning strikes causing ignitions that started a large scale fire. This was designated as the School Fire Complex the location of our study (Figure 1). The fire burned for fourteen days, consuming 21,000 hectares of land, including 87 buildings and 56% of the Umatilla National Forest Land. Almost half the federally owned land had been previously thinned for fire management (MODIS 2005). During the 2015 Fire Ecology and Management class (FOR 326) field trip to the School Fire Complex, the class surveyed a series of sites in order to create a research project to obtain a better understanding of fire and post fire management. The goal of this research is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both hypothesizes can be combined to one; that if an area is high severity, high pre fire density, and logged (HHL) it will have a higher density than the high severity, low pre fire density, and logged (HLL). Methods The lands that burned during this fire were mainly comprised of a mixed conifer forest. The main tree species found before and after the fire are Douglas fir, grand fir, Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine; PIPO), and Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine; PICO). Other species found include other varieties of spruce, pine, and larch. In some areas of the site a rich understory has formed or still exists; these were dominated by Salix scouleriana (Scouler s willow; SASC) with a limited variety of forbs present beneath the shrubs. Post fire management tactics included salvage logging and grass seeding. This seeding of native grasses was spread across burned areas in combination with mulch in the form of agriculture straw as well as shredded wood strips (Robichaud, 2009). In order to collect data, protocol was followed as described in by P. Morgan and P. Higueraa s (YEAR)School Fire Field Trip Handout and Assignment packet. In September 2015 the FOR 326 class from University of Idaho followed this protocol to find and collect data from 32 sites on two different days. To determine site locations, trip leaders took each group to a random pre determined area that corresponded with fire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Saurating Concentration Of Sodium Chloride And Sucrose The purpose of this lab was to find and compare the saturating concentration of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) and Sucrose. By making solutions of NaCl in water at different concentration, we found that the saturating concentration NaCl is between 0.375g/ml and 0.500g/ml. Using the same method, we found that the saturating concentration of sucrose is 0.750g/ml. Moreover, to further our understanding of density, we created a discontinuous density gradient using different concentration of sucrose solutions. When we placed the solutions in the test tube according to their relative density, we found that the solutionwith highest concentration sinks at bottom and the solution with lowest concentration stays on top. Therefore, we concluded that the higher the density of a solution is, the lower it will sink in a mixture. Introduction In this experiment, we make solutions and explore three types of solutions: saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated solutions. A solution is homogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent. Many different kinds of solutions exist because solutes and solvents can be a gas, a liquid or a solid. For example, Air is a solution consisting mostly of oxygen and nitrogen with trace amounts of several other gases. Furthermore, saturated solutions contain the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a solvent at a specific temperature (Helmenstine). On the other hand, unsaturated solutions can dissolve more solutions in the solvent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You would see him on his Youtube channel creating new arrangements for his accapella group SanFran 6 or practicing new lines for a show. Me and my family went to watch him portray as Scuttle in The Little Mermaid play. By the end of the play, we went outside and waited for my uncle to join us for celebratory pizza and ice cream. Little did I know, my whole perspective on life was about to change. A month or so passed and my mom had called me and my siblings in for a talk. You guys, she said and took a deep breath your Uncle Kevin is missing. At that very moment my whole world came crumbling down into reality, where the saying Life isn t fair had come into play. What...? all of us said in unison as we couldn t believe what we had just heard. I m going to California to go look for him, my mom explained. The day she left wasn t really that different. At first, my siblings and I thought it was just some misunderstanding and he would be back. A week later, my mom was back and he was still missing. My mom waited and waited for results on his whereabouts, but me and my siblings just went about our day. That was until my mom had called us in again for another talk. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jacobs addresses the most common idea of city planning as beautification and questions the effect it has on restoring a neighborhood. Jacobs states Handsome is as Handsome does. All that glitters are not gold (Jacobs 15). As much as the city can be beautified and full of parks and land it does not make up for the needs of the people. Jacob provides the example of a housing project and a lawn; Everyone in the housing project was upset and seem to have an opinion on having a lawn, when someone finally asked why and bothered to listen to the people, they realized that the people wanted a space to come together but unfortunately no one had bothered to ask. (15) Unfortunately, due to the lack of resources it is house projects like this that are often referred to as slums. Jacobs explains that ideally tax money would be used to fix the communities and allow for beautification. However due to economical stance of many neighborhoods and the city planning ideology it seems close to impossible. Jacobs writes Bankers, like planers have theories about cities on which they act... • 11. Francis Bacon as Shakespeare Francis Bacon as Shakespeare For almost four hundred years the question of who truly wrote the works attributed to William Shakespeare has been studied meticulously by many scholars and historians. There have been many well qualified contenders, including Sir Francis Bacon. Because of the incredible number of coincidences between Shakespeare and Bacon, it is obvious that Bacon wrote Shakespeare. Firstly, the actor William Shakespeare, who is the supposed author of Shakespeare s works, could not have written them. He had no formal education after thirteen, was from a small provincial town, was a professional actor, had two daughters who were illiterate, didn t mention any of his works in his will, and whose only surviving handwriting is six signatures on legal documents (Rubenstein 69). Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest authors in history, and without a formal education the intricacy of his work would be impossible. It should also be put in consideration that many of Shakespeare s works were not only published but edited after his death. From the publication of The Taming of the Shrew in 1594 to the publication of the First Folio in 1623, 4,936 new lines were added to the plays, a majority of which were added posthumously (sirbacon). This in itself is evidence enough to disprove Shakespeare entirely. Unlike William Shakespeare, Sir Francis Bacon was very well qualified to have written Shakespeare s works. Bacon was a highly educated Member of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Disputes At Various Stages Of M A Agreements ARBITRABLE DISPUTES AT VARIOUS STAGES OF M A AGREEMENTS From the very inception of a contract for merging of two companies or acquisition of one by the other to the very closing of the final deed, several disputes arise between the parties involved in these transactions. This is mainly because generally, both parties have substantial economic interests invested in the particular deal and are looking to gain the maximum monetary advantage out of the same. This leads to an obvious conflict of interests as both parties attempt to put their agenda before the other party s motive. • 13. Comparing Jocasta In The Odyssey And Oedipus Most seems to enjoy tight casting female characters through two tropes: either the damsel in distress waiting for her knight in shining armor to save her, or a tough, power indulged witch who s only concern is herself. Very few times (and by even fewer male authors) will a female character be written as a medium between the two extremes. This problem has been occurring for centuries almost, even being found in literature dating back to B.C., with Penelope from Homer s The Odyssey and Jocasta from Sophocles Oedipus Rex : Penelope being written as the damsel with hundreds of suitors vying for her attention, all while desperately weaving and waiting day in and day out for her true love to come home; Jocasta as this harsh women who only wants to be around when everything is working to her advantage. Then there s Antigone, who stands up for her morals against Thebes without so much as batting an eye. The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, ruler of Ithaca who has been lost out at sea for the past 20 years after the Trojan war. At home waiting is his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope. • 14. The Role Of Violence In The White Tiger By Aravind Adiga It cannot fairly be said that in Aravind Adiga s novel, The White Tiger, the only way to escape the Darkness and advance in society is through violence, as an alternative route to the Light is presented in the story arc of Vijay, the pig herder s son turned politician. Balram asserts that the murder of Ashok is not only the direct cause of his new wealth and status, but also the only possible trigger for his newfound social mobility. Yet, this is contradicted earlier in the story when he presents Vijay, the bus driver, as his role model for a successful person. Vijay, in order to achieve his elevated position, resorted to prostitution; despite not being a desirable alternative to violence, it is an alternative all the same and therefore violence is not the only way to escape the Darkness. Following this logic, it is Balram s story and the immediate increase in wealth that results from the murder of Ashok that best supports violence as the only means of moving into the Light, and Vijay s story is the best evidence against that point of view. Although Balram argues that violence is his only way of overcoming the poverty he is born into, Vijay, a manborn into status even lower than Balram s, achieves power and wealth without resorting to violence. Initially Balram presents Vijay as his role model, condoning the rumors of his prostitution in order to advance socially. He portrays Vijay as the first entrepreneur [he] knew of and a man who had made it in life (26), thereby ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Wings By Aprilynne Pike And The Hobbit Wings by Aprilynne Pike and The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien are two books that have challenged my reading skills and the way I think about achieving accomplishments that are considered impossible. These books are classified under the same genre fantasy and through character development my view of this genre as an uninteresting and unrealistic genre is challenged. The Hobbit was a more challenging text to read. The perspective of the story kept changing through the story making it confusing on whose point of view it was. In chapter 5 Bilbo refers to himself as I, I don t know where he came from, nor who nor what he was. The majority of the story is written in a third person perspective however it is occasionally written in the second and first person perspective. The amount of excessive description about the environment made these parts of the text tedious and challenging to read. I was tempted to skip these pasts however I found my vocabulary increasing, improving my reading skills as I persisted to read these parts of the story. Pike s, Wings was a much easier and interesting text to read as the story was set in a high school environment and the language was more straightforward and easy to understand. However, the last part of the plot challenged me and I was disappointed with the way things turned out. Laurel had to choose between the two supporting characters and the other one was rejected. Facilitating And Inhibiting Factors For Learning A Language Facilitating and inhibiting factors in learning a language in second language contexts Despite a marked difference in terms of their level of proficiency in English, Rodi and Liam managed to develop the same level of proficiency (high level of proficiency) in using Indonesian language. From their reports, summarised in Table 1 above, it is quite obvious to see that social contexts where the language is learned constitutes a very important factor that helped both learners develop their proficiency. That is to say, the abundance of input available in the social settings helped them conceptualise the target language systems more easily and thus enable them to cope with producing output more effectively thereafter. Of course, the abundance of input available in the social setting is useless unless the learners make use of it, and such quality is what differentiates good from poor language learners (Rubin, 1975). Being immersed in a speech community seems to also raise motivation in learning the language of the community itself. Such motivation is primarily related to survival. In other words, the two learners faced immediate needs where they had to be able to communicate with the new community where they lived in so that they were able to maintain social relationship with them and, more importantly, to fulfil their daily needs. As such, the learners perceived that learning Indonesian was meaningful and compelling. Such perception therefore might impose a great demand on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. The Gap Between Advanced Northern Countries And Developing... The developmental gap between advanced northern countries and developing southern countries has endured for centuries. The gaps primary cause is a lack of strong stable institutions in developing countries. The institutional failure is due, at least in part, to colonialism, which allowed for uneven northern development predicated upon southern subjugation and abuse. Within enslaved colonies, the colonizers installed poor institutions that would impact the country s ability to later function as a sovereign nation. Following the end of the colonial era, the developed North would supply policy recommendations or requirements along side aid to help the South develop. These policies lacked provisions to improve institutions within developing countries, proving to be monumental barriers for the South to catch up to the North. In addition, modern protectionist flare ups have stalled global trade reverting back to bilateral or regional trade agreements that are more harmful for developing countries. Bad institutions coupled with a lack of trade and investment pose as a further hindrance to development. The end of the colonial era may have felt like a huge step forward for newly sovereign nations, but in fact for some it would prove to be just as, or more detrimental than colonialism. Author Daron Acemoglu offers an institutional hypothesis that essentially points to good institutions as the catalyst that would eventually lead a country to economic prosperity ... Worlds Beyond The Solar System Worlds Beyond The Solar System Anisa Noor October 21st 2014 SES4U Mr. Humpartzoomian Worlds Beyond The Solar System When we think of planets we do not often consider planets outside the friendly neighborhood of our Solar System. Our universe is constantly expanding with billions of galaxies inside of it, and to think all these galaxies hold nothing but stars is preposterous. If the planets in the Milky Way revolve around the Sun, there must be other celestial bodies revolving around stars elsewhere in space. Extrasolar planets, commonly called exoplanets, are planets that orbit stars outside the Solar System, but what makes such exoplanets actual planets and not just free floating objects moving through space? These celestial bodies must follow three requirements to be classified as planets, stated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) regarding the solar system, a planet must: orbit a star, have enough mass so that the star s gravity pulls it into an elliptical orbit, and it must be gravitationally dominant, so that no other bodies of similar size hold a gravitational influence besides the planet s own satellites. Now having known of exoplanets, what are they? How many are there? Say approximately one star holds one exoplanet in its orbit, then multiply this by 300 billion stars per galaxy, and then multiply this by the amount of galaxies in our universe; this is the expanse of the exoplanets we are dealing with. • 57. The Internet Does Not Represent A Democratisation Of The... The question that I considered writing about in my essay was The internet does not represent a democratisation of the media because the online world mirrors the inequalities of the offline world . The argument I am making is that the offline world does not mirror the inequalities of the online world. The online world is a huge database that is used to engage emphasis of inequalities of the offline world. This simply signifies discriminationas being notorious on the online world. An example of this which I think is a big factor is internet equality, also known as Net Neutrality . Net neutrality is the principle that all online traffic should be treated equally. If you are paying for a certain speed of internet connection, you should be able to use that to its full potential all the time, regardless of which website or service you are accessing. Right now you are paying one price for your internet connection, companies do not have any right to dictate what you use that internet for as they can only charge you for the internet itself, but if huge companies such as Time Warner Cable and Comcast had their way, each month they would charge you extra to watch Netflix or use Facebook on top of many already trying to impose bandwidth caps on how much data you can download every month. To put it in to perspective similarly, it would be like a water company charging you extra because you decided to use your water for coffee instead of the laundry. The reason why the example ... • 58. Hypothermia Treatment Of Cardiac Arrest Hypothermia for Cardiac Arrest Introduction Survivors of cardiac arrest often suffer from neurological damage when oxygen to the brain is depleted. This ischemia to the brain can cause lesions or damaged areas; which can effect any part of the body that is controlled by that portion of the brain. Decreasing the body temperature of a patient has shown to be effective in decreasing the amount of damage to the brain. Therapeutic hypothermia may be a reasonable treatment for patients following cardiac arrest due to its ability to decrease the impact of ischemia; reducing the number of lesions to the brain and possibly reducing the patient mortality rate. This paper will discuss the benefits, risks, and Mercy Hospital s protocol for using therapeutic hypothermia following a cardiac arrest. Article Summary One In the first article, Caring for Patients Receiving Therapeutic Hypothermia Post Cardiac Arrest in the Intensive Care Unit , Gardner and MacDonald state that decreasing the body temperature of a patient to 32В° to 34В° has shown improved outcomes during trials. This treatment is intended for patients who present with non perfusing ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, are resuscitated to hemodynamic stability, and remain unresponsive (Gardner MacDonald, p. 15). The article states that brain injury occurs when there is a loss of oxygen carrying blood flow to the brain. This damage starts at the cellular level and leads to neurological dysfunction. ...
