How Did Philip II Change The Military
Philip II took control of Macedon in 359 BC as Macedon was going through a deep crisis. On the
verge of collapse with having recently lost 4,000 men and Persiccas killed in battle against invading
Illyrians and his death opening several security threats, Macedon was in desperate need of a ruler.
With the heir to the throne only an infant Philip persuaded the officials to recognise him as king in
place of his infant nephew. Philip quickly realised the weakness of his country s army and drew upon
past experiences to mould them into a supreme army. He effectively reformed the Phalanx, Cavalry,
siege craft and weapons to gain military supremacy and hegemony. Before Philip, the Phalanx was
extremely week with weapons, layout and manoeuvrability. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The weapons and shield were big, bulky and impractical as seen by Philip. Philips reform to the use,
and style of weapons made it easier and more effective for soldiers to fight. Similarly to how Philip
changes the structure of the army from a citizen army to a professional army, he had to change the
weaponry that was use. Previously as armies were citizen armies, each solider obtained their
weaponry from themselves, resulting in a vast variety of styles and quality of weapons. Philip
successfully changed this by creating a professional army, who was paid by the State and with
everything provided by the State. This not only created unity within the men fighting by also new and
uniform weapons, generating a better army. Weapons that Philip created that effectively lead the
Macedonian army to success include the Sarissa. The Sarissa was a six meter long pike gave its
wielder many advantages both offensively and defensively. The added length against enemies meant
that a Macedonian solider could stab its enemy with the Sarissa while still being out of touch of the
enemies pike. The Sarissa was effective as it kept the solider with safe distance from enemies; it was
designed so that if or when it broke, it was able to be turned around and used again, hence the
versatility of the weapon being vital and effective to the Macedonian army. Philip also introduced that
each man possessed a double ended sword. Once his Sarissa was broken he was still able to take part
in hand to hand sword fighting, of which Philip made sure that they were highly trained as Diodorus
said that Philip trained and disciplined his troops to extremely high proficiency, as is shown on the
many successful battle fields. The reformed shield being lighter and smaller also made it easier for the
men to sword fight when necessary. This reform in the Macedonian professional army was

How The Low Income Of Countries Such As Chad And Papua New...
Introduction
This report is to help introduce the low income of countries such as Chad and Papua New Guinea, and
comparing them to a country such as Sweden who has no income. For years, certain countries, as the
two listed above cannot maintain a lifestyle with the incomes that are available to them. Using
incomes will help to see where the problem is occurring and how it might be approached to aid the
countries. Reporting on the countries will give insight into a historical background including
independence of the countries, along with education, literacy, life factors, and poverty by using the
GINI to show how wide the gaps can be and become.
Historical Background In 1946 Chad became an Overseas Territory of France and on August 11, 1960
obtained independence, but short lived, because of a tyrant dictator, Francois Tombalbaye, who never
really released them from his grip, and Chad had been in a civil war, until 1990 when Idriss Deby, a
military commander, took control and with his rule, multi party politics has returned to Chad, giving
some freedoms back to its citizens (Chad s long road to independence, 2010).
Papua New Guinea was under the government of Australia, and the UN pushed Australia to give
Papua New Guinea independence and help create a group that would be able to run a government
through social and educated influences. On September 16, 1975 Papua New Guinea obtained their
independence with a monarchy ruled by Queen Elizabeth II as head of state represented

John Dewey Philosophy
A philosopher is known as someone who rationally investigates the truths and principles of being,
knowledge and conduct (Howe , 2010). According to (Justarius, 2007), A philosopher looks at the
world in wonder. He seeks the underlying meaning of things. He wants to understand it and codify it
into a system of thought. Being a philosopher means to engage in the never ending quest for being
fully and authentically human (Kimura, 2013). In the world today, there are many philosophers that
have walked this planet. John Dewey is one of the most important Philosophers that has contributed
his theory to the world.
John Dewey was born October 20, 1859, in Burlington, Vermont. He taught at universities from 1884
to 1930 (Editors, 2014). After he received a doctorate in 1884, Dewey was ... Show more content on

Dewey thought that people learn the best through experiences. He believed that learning was active
and schooling unnecessarily long and restrictive. His idea was that children came to school to do
things and live in a community which gave them real, guided experiences which fostered their
capacity to contribute to society (Neill, 2005). Instrumentalism is a theory of knowledge created by
Dewey in which ideas are seen to exist primarily as instruments for the solution of problems
encountered in the environment. He thought knowledge could be falsified which needed to be
consistently challenged and experimented on. He emphasized on inquiry based education (Bhuiyan,
2015).
The British had a major impact on the educational system in Trinidad and Tobago. The system reflects
the British colonial that once ruled the islands (Ali, 2015). The education system is one that is
completely different from the United States. Raiesa (Ali, 2015), further explains the education system

The Perfect Homecoming
The Perfect Homecoming
J.K. Rowling once said, Rock bottom became the foundation on which I rebuilt my life. In 2017 the
United States had one of the harshest hurricane seasons in a long time, leaving a lot of people at rock
bottom . During the season Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston. The Washington post said,
Harvey has unloaded 9 trillion gallons of water. The Weather Channel stated that Rockport, TX
experienced 130 MPH winds. The storm was devastating, flooding most of the city which destroyed
countless buildings and homes. When one thinks of home, the first thing that comes to mind is not
always school. But to the students and staff of Lutheran South Academy, their school was not just a
place to learn; but a community where everyone feels like they are a part of a family. When disaster
strikes, people lean on family for support. The disaster of Hurricane Harvey did a number on the
campus, destroying many of the buildings belonging to this community. The flooding of the LSA
campus due to Hurricane Harvey displaced the institution forcing them to struggle with the efforts of
rebuilding what was destroyed in the flood. However, if people would endure the struggle together
and help rebuild instead of leaving when complications arrive then LSA would be restored in better
time and of better quality.
The devastation of Harvey on the LSA community forced them to move into the facilities of Sagemont
Church, near I 45 and the Sam Houston Tollway. The church was very

done on people who do not feel ill and so suggest that screening can very useful for midwives in
helping them detect disorders before any outward signs or symptoms are shown and allows midwives
to identify babies that are at a high risk of a disorder and so prenatal diagnosis establishes whether or
not the disorder is definitely present which can then lead to the disease being treated at an earlier
stage. Screening does not replace diagnosis; it aims to provide midwives and mothers with
information which can help them with further decision making.

Plaza, the Logistics Park of Zaragoza

Logistics Term
The Logistics Plaza of Zaragoza is the largest logistic park in Europe. It is a ten year project that
started in 2000, which is now at the middle of its completion. There are not many articles on logistic
parks up till now because it is a very recent development. Generally, logistic activities would grow
around strategic part without any pre planning. Due to overcrowding of those areas, governments are
now trying to place logistics in more decentralized regions and are trying to create services in order to
attract customers.

They might give Plaza the option of easily taking back the initial investment, however, they would not
be a focus for FDI nor would help in promoting Zaragoza as an important logistic European center.
International companies are still doubtful of settling down in PLAZA.
They still do not see the advantage of committing to a place where none of the services offered are
already up and running. Despite the facility, the airport still has very small cargo activity. Railways are
being built, but not a single train stops at PLAZA, therefore opportunities of linking with ports are still
to be exploited. Intermodality is still at the planning stage and the direct connection to Europe through
the Pyrenees is seemed as a long term project.
The brightest view of opening a tunnel through the Pyrenees is ten years away, due to the sudden
investment necessary to both Spain and France. The pillars of PLAZA cannot be built without the
necessary infrastructure. Up till now it is not a strong strategic area and is unable to apply
Intermodality; the only benefit is the comparatively low cost of land.
However, the cheaper land is not a very attractive choice for multinational companies; this will not
draw them to the park. The achievement of the project is still at risk. Managers, backed by the
government, still have to work tough to build up strong reliability and make sure that the essential
infrastructure is put in place so that Plaza becomes the best logistic park in

A Medieval Contest
In comparing and contrasting the Arthurian Legends and J.R.R. Tolkien amp;#8217;s book The
Fellowship of the Ring, it is almost like a medieval contest between the two with many of the
similarities coming from the customs of the Middle Ages. A look at the make up of the groups
involved, the moral code, the protagonist, the antagonist, the use of supernatural elements and the
knightly quest involved in each book shows how alike they are but yet different.
The Arthurian Legends revolve around the life of the knights during the Middle Ages. A knight would

year was to: amp;#8220;only fight in just cause, at all times to be merciful, at a all times to put the

Counselling Case Study
Introduction
This essay is an evaluation of two counselling models applied to a situation where a client has
experienced loss and how a counsellor can create a therapeutic relationship with the client using each
counselling model. It will also contain other skills a counsellor could use to obtain/maintain a good
therapeutic relationship with the client.
Outcomes
There are 3 main outcomes needed within this assignment. The fist outcome is to distinguish and
describe the main principles needed for effective communication and interpersonal communication
skills which will ensure the counsellor works with the client successfully. The second outcome is to
identify practical and ethical issues needed which would create a safe environment when a ... Show

This model was created by Carl rogers. He believed for a personality change to occur the counsellor
would need to use the six core conditions and use them continuously over a period of time (Rogers,
1957).
The first step would have involved the counsellor to create a psychological contact with Felicia. The
second step within the process would be the counsellor needs to ensure that Felicia is in a state of
incongruence. Incongruence is the difference of the client s self image and actual experience. If Felicia
s self image and actual experiences don t match it could lead her to feeling vulnerable and create
anxiety. On the other hand, the counsellor needs to be congruent. This would mean the counsellor will
be himself 100%. This will involve the counsellor being honest and transparent of who they are and
not putting up a façade. The counsellor should show unconditional positive regard (UPR) to Felicia.
Unconditional positive regard is the counsellor accepting and supporting the client without judging
them. The fifth condition the counsellor should actively use would be empathy. Empathy is the skill to
understand another individual s feelings. This is vital within therapy. The counsellor should be able to
experience the client s feelings without it having effect on their emotions. The final condition would
be the counsellor and the client have a minimal degree understanding of

My Reading Experience
Laying on my comfortable bed under my warm covers with a chapter book in front of my face, I
turned to the last page.
It was a suc cess ful successful day, read the final line in the book.
My heart began to race as my eyes grew wide like an owl s. Had I really just read a whole chapter
book by myself? I sprung out of my bed and ran to go tell my mom.
Mommy, I just finished reading a chapter book all by myself! I exclaimed with a wide smile plastered
on my face.
I m so proud of you! my mother responded. I knew that you could do it! My mom gave me a huge
hug. At that moment, I realized that all of the long hours of practicing and reading had paid off. I
could finally read a chapter book.
Since I was young, my parents made reading a priority for me. When I was in kindergarten at my
preschool, I had a reading teacher who worked one on one with me to increase my level. As a result, I
was confident in my reading ability and excited for the first day of first grade at my new red bricked
elementary school. As I briskly walked through the main entrance and to my classroom the morning of
the first day, I squeezed my parents hands tightly with butterflies in my stomach. I had only been
inside the school one other time, at Meet the Teacher night, so I was still unsure of what to expect. We
found my classroom and put my pink polka dot backpack and matching lunchbox on the hook below
my cubby right inside the door. After finding my desk and sitting in my chair, my parents gave me

The Narrative Paradigm By Scott Stroud
Scott Stroud in his article Multivalent narratives: Extending the Narrative Paradigm with Insights from
Ancient Indian Philosophical Texts critiques the narrative paradigm by pointing out its weaknesses
and proposing revisions to the existing paradigm using ancient Indian philosophical narratives. Stroud
claims that Fisher s paradigm is too limiting and conservative when dealing with foreign concepts and
texts. The narrative paradigm does not allow people to experience new stories that may differ from
their traditional stories challenging their values and/ or accepting new ones (Stroud, p. 372). Our
judgment of a narrative is based on what we believe is just or true. New ideas or thoughts or values are

Knowing that man is separate from Dattatreya will lead to the mind being cleansed and salvation. This
narrative also says that Dattatreya is of this world, residing in everything of earth. The story argues
against the separation of the subordinate and the deity, saying, There is no Shepard, no flock (as cited
in Stroud, 2002). The deity tells man in order to achieve salvation he must meditate and work, but man
should do neither in order to gain reward, taking care to chose actions wisely as those choices will
impact future salvation (Stroud, 2002, p. 382). This text is full of contradictions; the deity is separate
from man, the deity is with man and of the world, meditate and work to gain salvation, meditation and
work are not important and will not gain man salvation. The second text is equally confusing and
contradictory within itself and to the first text. The Devi Gita is a goddess of divine power who urges
the reader to be devout only to her. She says she is also separate from the world, only later in the text
to claim she is of this world and with man. Meditation is important to achieve salvation however
meditating in hopes of salvation or to please the ego is not pleasing to her. Stroud claims that the
narrative paradigm as it is now is not efficient in rendering an outcome for the western reader of these
texts, which involve incoherence

The Last Major Overhaul Of Theu.s Tax Code
The last major overhaul of the U.S tax code took place over twenty eight years ago as part of the Tax
Reform Act of 1986. President Ronald Regan s Treasury Department proposed a tax neutral reform
with the definitive duty of simplifying the overall code. However, the absence of any reform since
then greatly reflects the United States current condition, in that The United States provides a good
example of an uncompetitive tax code (Pomerleau Lundeen, 2014). The following will examine the
main components of the tax code that make a nations taxing system competitive. It will then identify
two parts of the code, that when combined create a disadvantageous environment for any American
business who competes internationally. Foremost, most nation s taxing systems characteristically have
five main features that either make them greatly competitive or not. Competitiveness includes
desirability for both the society and business activity. A nations corporate rate, its consumption tax,
property tax, the individual tax, and its international (global or territorial) are what make up the core
features of competiveness. But is the competiveness of a nation s taxing system related for both
industrialized and developing nations? The answer is yes, but not completely.
The differences between industrialized, transitioning, and emerging countries are great, especially
from a taxing and economic standpoint. The terms industrialized or developed countries generally

A Person s Normal Ph Range
A person s normal pH range is between 7.35 and 7.45. (Tortora, G., Derrickson, B. H. ,2014 01 22).
This range is important for the body to function properly. There certain conditions that can cause the
pH range to fluctuate. Acidosis is a condition in which the blood pH is below 7.35 and alkalosis is a
condition in which the blood pH is higher than 7.45. Significant changes in pH range can affect
cellular function and possibly lead to death. Your blood needs the right balance of acid and basic
(alkaline) compounds to function properly . (George, K., 2013)
Respiratory acidosis is a condition that happens when there is too much carbon dioxide in the lungs.
When this happens, the blood becomes too acidic. People with respiratory acidosis will have a pH less
than 7.35 with a PaCO2 greater than 45mm HG. (sitelms.org) This particular form of acidosis can be
caused by diseases of the airways, lungs, and chest. It can also be caused by diseases that may affect
the nerves and muscles that tell the lungs to inflate or deflate. Certain narcotics may cause this to
happen as well. If respiratory acidosis does not become too severe the kidneys will help to raise the
blood pH to the normal range. The kidneys increase the amount of hydrogen it releases and the
reabsorption of bicarbonate. When medical treatment is necessary, it is usually aimed at the underlying
disease, or cause of the condition. (.nlm.nih.gov, 2016) Bronchodilator drugs may be prescribed to

Abstract this paper is an involvement in the field of security study on mobile ad hoc networks.
Boundaries of the mobile ad hoc nodes have been considered in order to design a secure Ad hoc
routing protocol that thwarts selfish and flooding attacks. We took the base of Ad hoc On Demand
Routing Protocol (AODV); the most popular Routing protocol. The significance of the proposed
protocol that should make sure security as wanted by providing a broad architecture of Trusted and
PES Mechanism based smart Path Routing protocol (TBAODV) based on effective key management,
secure neighbor detection, secure routing data s, finding malicious nodes, and eliminating these nodes

throughput and packet delivery ratio while it has a tolerable increase in the routing overhead and
average delay. Also, security study proves in details that the proposed protocol is robust enough to

First Compressions In Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
Although first impressions are given quite a bit of weight in our society, they are often wrong. In
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry has several first impressions of new characters. Ludo
Bagman is a great guy who works for the ministry: funny, nice, and always cheerful, he s very popular
with Hogwarts students. Fleur Delacour is a French Beauxbatons student who is gorgeous, and very
aware of it. She is always complaining about Hogwarts and thinks the world revolves around her, and
only her. Professor Alastor Moody was an auror in his time, and since he has caught so many dark
wizards, he is very paranoid, leading many people to believe he is insane. However, he is chosen to
become the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and he knows what he is talking about. These
are all true statements about these three characters. Or are they? Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,
by JK Rowling, explores the concept of first impressions, revealing that even The Chosen One holds
opinions on people that are completely incorrect.
Ludo Bagman is supposedly an amazing person who wants to see the underdog win, but Fred and
George Weasley quickly learn that he is not the perfect man he seems to be. When Ludo comes to
Hogwarts to judge the Triwizard Tournament, the students cheer very loudly when his name is
announced, and he happily waves back. Everyone seems to adore him, yet in the background, Fred
and George know the truth about the deceitful man. You remember that bet we

Extermination Camps During The Holocaust
Anti semitism in Germany led by Adolf Hitler would back up a plan called the final solution, to
exterminate all of the Jews in Europe. Out of the 100 million Jews aimed for extermination, 6 million
of them were killed. On his path to German greatness, Jews became victim to inconceivable actions.
First the Nuremberg Laws were passed which stripped Jews of their german citizenship, eliminating
their opportunity to flee to other countries. After Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, Hitler
forcefully deported Jewish people into fenced confinements called ghettos. More Jews died here than
in any extermination camp due to the harsh conditions and labor. Most people living in ghettos had no

These were specialized for the mass murder of Jews using Zyklon B to ensure a painful, long, and

Lead Concentration In Schools Drinking Water
This article was written about 1,500 New York City schools that have covered up the lead
concentration in their schools drinking water, due mostly to outdated piped and water that is the wrong
pH. The motive behind this is that schools that are found to have high lead levels are forced to replace
their pipes and many schools can t or won t pay to fix the problem. Of course if a school can t fix the
lead levels in their water system, the school will be shut down and faculty members are out of a job.
In order to significantly lower lead concentrations pre test is was common practice for these schools to
use a practice known as pre stagnation flushing . This basically means that they ran every single tap in
the school for two hours the night before the test, which is also a huge waste of drinking water.
Because of this many of the 1,500 schools passed the state s test for lead contamination.
Unfortunately, this is all legal too. The article reads: Because the E.P.A. does not regulate the testing
of water in schools, its guidance on pre stagnation flushing does not apply directly to New York s
procedures. But the agency s voluntary guidelines for schools do not recommend such flushing and
generally direct schools to mimic normal consumption patterns when taking samples. (Taylor, Kate) ...

On the contrary, Dr. Lambrinidou, an anthropologist at virginia tech, said that: Flushing is
inappropriate any time you want to assess lead concentrations coming out of individual taps... Unless
N.Y.C. schools flush every drinking water tap every evening for 2 hours routinely, their sampling
technique is both unreliable and scientifically and morally indefensible. After further testing without
flushing the system, 510 out of the 1,500 schools that were reviewed met the E.P.A. s action level for
lead in municipal water

Jewish Mysticism
During the Middle ages, a period of time lasting from the 5th to the 15th century, arose a strong
figurehead and Jewish philosopher by the name Moshe ben Maimon. An expert on Jewish scripture
and Talmud, he took on writing detailed responses to questions raised by Jews on the topics of Jewish
Law and interpretations of the scriptures. Maimonides made it his purpose to make God and the
Jewish faith the basis of knowledge for his Jewish followers understanding and to provide summaries
and interpretations of Rabbinic text, scriptures and the Torah. Despite Maimonides being an influential
figure for Jewish theology, Jewish mysticism has taken a more dramatic stance on the Torah and its
teachings. Jewish mysticism holds strong in the attitude towards ... Show more content on

Mirroring mysticism, Maimonides saw God as transcendent, being completely unique as He is
responsible for the existence of the world. Yet where Maimonides differs from mysticism is in his
belief that the only way to know God is to know God s actions, and the only way to know God s
actions is to study physics. The separation between the two theologies stems from metaphysics.
According to Maimonides thought, our religious commandment is to study physics. The purpose of
our existence is to perfect the image of God that we are created in, that is our rational soul, where our
rational soul is life. The merging of philosophy, theology and physics compelled Maimonides to write
the thirteen fundamental principles of the Jewish faith. In these fundamentals highlight the existence
of the Creator in his absolute and unparalleled perfection and eternity as well as how God
communicated to man through prophecy. Prophets were seen to possess intellectual perfection where
the sole difference between a philosopher and prophet was the language transmittable to the commons.
The intellectual difference allowed those fortunate enough to pursue further into the understanding
that the 611 commandments are a program that Moses created in order to create a

My Observations of Classrooms
Description of Class Setting
I was given permission to conduct my child study project in PAP community Foundation (Bukit Batok
East Education Centre) by Miss Denise Lim, principal of the centre. The teacher present at all my
observation sessions was Miss Moriah. All the observation sessions were conducted in a classroom
setting in the Hibiscus room. The first two observation sessions were at least an hour long with 15 20
minutes of frontal teaching and another 40 to 45 minutes of classwork in their group tables. The last
session was carried out in the same setting but at a different timing with half an hour of snack time
and half an hour of emotional awareness session. The frontal teaching part was carried out with the
students seated in their groups on the floor facing the teacher and the whiteboard. Students were
assigned to carry out their classwork at three different group coloured tables namely, red, yellow and
blue.
Description of class
The class consists of 15 to 16 Kindergarten two students. All of them are 5 to 6 year olds. 5 of the
students are Indians, 5 are Chinese, 3 are Malay students. and 2 are Filipinos nationals.
Background of child
The child was selected and issued the parent s consent form the day before session 1. Before the class

The Model Of Columbia Sportswear Company
The regression analyzes the number of sales (the dependent variable) of Columbia Sportswear
Company in millions of dollars in the United Stated per year. INC represents the annual income per
capita in the United States in dollars. ADV equals the amount that Columbia spent on advertising in
the United States each year, and is also expressed in millions of dollars. RS is the number of retail
stores per year in the United States. STP represents the average annual stock price of COLM
(Columbia s ticker symbol in the stock market) shares in the stock market. COS equals Columbia s
annual cost of sales in the United States, in millions of dollars. We used t statistics, F statistics and R
squared to interpret the results of our regression. With twenty observations (n=20), on intercept and
five variables (k=6), the degree of freedom equals fourteen. With 99% level of confidence, t critical
t_14^0.01≈ 2.977. For two of the five independent variables t calculated t critical, implying that the
annual average stock price and the cost of sales are strongly significant in the sales of Columbia
sportswear. As a result, a one dollar ($1) increase in the average annual stock price of the company
leads to an increase of $3.37 million in sales. A one dollar ($1) increase in the cost of sales leads to an
increase of $1.44 million in the sales of the company. Also with 99% level of confidence, we can
assert that Columbia Sportswear Company would be losing $186.9 million without the

Descartes Was A Philosopher That Did Not Take Any Truth
Descartes was a philosopher that did not take any truth without questioning it. This is key in truly
understanding the world around us. A real seeker of truth must doubt everything once in their lifetime.
Without doubt, we have no reason. Without reason, we cannot hold any truths to be correct. Descartes
truly understood how the rudiments vested in us by an infinite power play a powerful role in the way
we live today.
1. What is your initial point of view?
My initial point of view is that in order to seek the truth, we must doubt. In doubting, we critically
analyze the reason behind our thought process. What exactly makes a piece of wax that piece of wax?
Is it even wax? We must doubt even the simplest of truths in order to reach a higher state of knowing.
2. How can you define your point of view more clearly?
I can define my point of view more clearly by defining truth and doubt. Truth can be defined as an
idea that holds certainty and be able to question and analyze. Doubt can be defined as uncertainty with
a questionable premise.
3. What is an example of your point of view?
An example of my point of view is in Descartes most noted wax example. We take into consideration
a piece of wax, which has a color, shape, size, and will emit a sound. Once we burn the wax,
everything changes. We don t question that it is the same wax, though. But why? How do we know
that it is the same wax? Descartes did exactly this, and concluded that what he saw he grasped solely

Department Of Nutrition Essay
Our democracy is built off a system of separation of powers, however sometimes those powers get
more tied together than they are supposed to be. President Pisapia s new Department of Nutrition has
brought these branches together, involving party partisanship. Pisapia and the National Party are
supporters of this Department, competing against the American Party. This Department led to a close
battle in the Court, but it is eventually declared legal. However, now that the American Party has come
into power in the House, the path for the Department of Nutrition is unclear. This situation is mainly
driven by the parties divide over the matter. The Department of Nutrition sounds like it has good

This also reflects on the congressmen of the National Party. They were in favor of a more radical
Department that would increase the role of the government in people s lives. As David Mayhew, in
Congress: The Electoral Connection, says, probably the best position taking strategy for most
congressmen at most times is to be conservative to cling to their own positions of the past where
possible and to reach for new ones with great caution where necessary (Congress: The Electoral
Connection). Because these congressmen took such stark stances on the matter, it made them stand out
and they became easily desired to be replaced. This led to a take over the House by the American
Party, reflecting the change in the will of the people. Not only is this issue a polarizing subject within
the House, but also within the Court. The creation of the Department was ruled legal by the Court,
however it can also be seen as unconstitutional. The Court ruled in favor of the creation of this
department with a 5 4 vote, calling that it was stated under the First Article. A 5 4 vote is a close vote,
and it is not surprising the judges aligned with their party. The judges that were nominated by National
Party were the ones that held up the law, and the American Party voted against it. The ruling on this

Anthropology and Gender Essay
Though women have played an integral part in the history of the discipline of anthropology, it was not
until the early 1970 s that the field of anthropology and gender, or feminist anthropology emerged.
Sex and gender roles have always been a vital part of any ethnographic study, but the contributors of
this theory began to address the androcentric nature of anthropology itself. The substantial gap in
information concerning the study of women was perceived as a male bias, a prejudice made more
apparent because what little women centered fieldwork was done received insufficient attention from
the academic community. While anthropology was considered one of the more egalitarian fields of
study, it was dominated by white, Western males who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of Slocum s contemporaries, Eleanor Leacock (1922 1987) chose to differently analyze gender
research, focusing on distinctions in power as it relates to society, the economy, and politics (2011:
397). She concentrated on North American natives and aboriginal Australians and their changing
gender roles as the result of Western influence. Another feminist trend gave emphasis to gender
identities, analyzing the ways in which race, class and gender converge. David Valentine, born in
1966, illustrates such an emphasis in his work which concerns the cross cultural variations on the
westernized concepts of gender identity and sexuality, by which we categorize sexual desire
(2011:398). As evidenced by the variety of emphases within the theory, feminist anthropologists were
fully committed to assessing all previously ignored facets of the subjugated female within numerous
cultures worldwide.
Several decades ago the idea of women as subordinate was considered to be a universality by the
aforementioned white, Western male anthropologists who lead the field. Despite an anthropologist s
endeavor to be unbiased, the fact is these traditional anthropologists came from a culture where many
aspects of human life were male dominant. Though many studied

Franchise or Pardon
During the Reconstruction period, beginning in 1865, the United States entered a period in which they
mended relationships between the North and the South. It was also a period of hostility between both
sides. The war had ended and the Southerners had suffered plenty of damage to their land. The
Reconstruction period was a time which the South was rebuilt with the integration of all the newly
freed blacks into society. This particular collection I chose by Thomas Nast called Franchise. But not

Radical Republicans offered amendments for the Constitution to the House of Representatives. The
cartoon depicts Columbia standing adjacent to the black Union soldier. She gestures towards him, with
one hand gingerly placed upon his shoulder as if asking, What about him? My claims could be
supported by the title of this piece, Franchise. But not this man? Columbia is depicted as the
representation of the freed blacks, asking about their rights as citizens. In this depiction of Columbia

comes with this cartoon. In the accompanying cartoon, Pardon by Nast, Columbia is depicted sitting
with one arm crossed, next to the hilt of her sword, and her other hand is propped against her cheek
and face, which holds a more than annoyed expression on her face. In Pardon Columbia faces a
kneeling mass of ex confederate men asking for pardon, that party is led by Robert E. Lee. Columbia s
sword is pointed towards the man as a symbol of distrust from the nation towards ex confederate
generals. From this depiction it can be inferred that the people believed they could not trust those that
left the United States. By placing these two cartoons adjacent to each other one could infer that Nast
and some portion of those viewing this newspaper thought that freed slaves should be able to vote and
those in the ex confederacy have their rights to vote revoked. Many Radical Republicans, including
Thaddeus Stevens, encouraged Congress to protect not only the voting rights of blacks but also the
protection of the black economics, political and social rights (Harrold

Sydney Carton Ambiguity
Tale of Two Cities
Charles Dickens, a meticulous British novelist, imposes ambiguity in the personalities of Sydney

are dynamic. Sydney Carton is an extremely ambiguous character in The Tale of Two Cites. Sydney
Carton transforms from debauchery to admirable. At first, Carton is a drunkard, and he is willing to
help out C.J. Stryver at any time of day. Carton made Stryver, one of most respected lawyers in
London, a brilliant and popular lawyer. Drinking and helping Stryver out keeps him from internally
beating himself up. Carton feels worthless and unlovable. Charles stated to Mr. Lorry after his trial, I
hardly seem yet... to belong in this world again (2. 4. 83). Carton is in the dumps and feels no hope
whatsoever. Sydney Carton has nobody to love or care for at this point in the novel; he selfishly
wishes he were imprisoned. Dickens leads us to believe there is no hope for Carton, but then Lucie

Advantages Of Anti-Competitive Agreement

People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the
conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.
While doing business in India, parties are prohibited from executing anti competitive agreements.
Generally, the agreements which cause or are likely to cause appreciable adverse effect on competition
( AAEC ) are anti competitive agreements. However, the Competition Act, 2002 ( Act ) recognizes
intellectual property rights and to facilitate their protection, the Act permits reasonable restrictions

The most obvious example would be that of agreements between enterprises dealing in the same

that the parties to the agreement are both (all) producers, or retailers or wholesaler. As has been
interpreted over the years in the U.S. (and enacted more recently in other countries) a dissention is
drawn in this regard between horizontal and vertical agreements. In certain circumstances it can be

Research Paper On Wigs
History shows Egyptians wearing wigs, but those of means had human hair sewn into their own hair.
Powdered wigs graced royal heads during the (), and the elaborate hairstyles of the Victorian,
Edwardian and the Gilded Age were artistic creations that were impossible without hair pieces. For
every era there are elaborate techniques for adding hair where needed or desired and as styles repeat
themselves, ancient hair weaving techniques have returned as today s hair extensions. Millions of
women will spend time and money on chemical curls, permanent relaxers and dyes to hide age or
draw attention. While these maneuvers change the hair s appearance, they do not change the one thing
that many men watch for, the length.
Wigs give their wearers immediate gratification, but wig caps can be drying, inexpensive synthetic
wigs can look unnatural, and human hair wigs can be too expensive. Add the wear and tear of having a
wig s cap rubbing against the hair and length gained through patience can be lost to breakage. When
modern women consider temporary length, hair extensions are often the answer. However, choosing
high quality, human hair extensions means understanding human hair itself. Each strand of hair is

Analysis Of Film Production Of The Merchant Of Venice
Film Review
Michael Radford s 2004 film production of The Merchant of Venice provides a well executed and
generally faithful rendition of Shakespeare s play. Radford s production especially succeeds in both its
casting and set design that elevates the mood and drama contained in Shakespeare s text. In addition to
the filming, particular attention was taken to following the original text, but some interesting in
liberties in plot details were taken. Radford s production serves as an exemplar of film adaptions of
Shakespeare s play; it takes the challenge of adapting the text to the screen with excellent casting, bold
filming, and well imagined sets. Jeremy Irons as Antonio, the merchant, gives a convincing mix of
optimism converted to pessimism as he prepares for his death in the court. Perhaps the best casting, Al
Pacino plays an excellent Shylock that initially invokes the movie watcher s empathy then turns
quickly into an enraged, psychopathic persona reminiscent to his characters in Scarface or Godfather.
Particularly, Pacino shows off his talent in the famous Hath not a Jew eyes monologue where Pacino
takes us through a full emotional range of compassion, sympathy, to scorching rage. Similarly,
Radford uses this scene to show off his directorial chops: the scene uses a follow shot in which the
camera follows Pacino s character as he crosses the dark Venetian streets, through a brothel to find
Antonio s comrades, and back into the streets where the heart of his

Hospitality in the Qu ran
Ideas on Cultural Hospitality in the Quran The virtues within the Qur an regarding hospitality and
generosity seem to be a product of the landscape of pre Islamic Arabia. Indeed, the arid environment
and tribal configuration of the society required that neighbors help each other, strangers or travelers be
given food, and wealth be distributed evenly throughout the clan. The communities that settled along
the trade routes of the Arabian Peninsula relied on merchants returning to their community to trade
goods. One way to ensure this was to make the merchant feel welcome and become a temporary part

If a follower gives, generously, and without selfish reasons, then God will provide for all of their
needs, just as they have provided for others. The text goes on to express that even speech full of
kindness and true appreciation is better than the act of charity that hurts (Qur an 2:263). Again this
broad support for kind speech and generous giving is used as a lens through which the stories of
hospitality can be viewed. The Qur an shows the importance of hospitality in two intertwined stories,
and while the passages that dictate kindness, generosity and manners number well over twenty, the
impact of these two hospitality accounts is memorable and complex. The stories actually involve two
patriarchs from Israelite text, who play major roles in Qur anic teachings. The first is in surah 11:69 70
and involves Abraham s interaction with three strangers who turn out to be angels who have come to
warn him about punishment of Sodom. They also bring news of Sarah s future conception and relate
the story of their visit with Lot in Sodom. His first reaction to their arrival is to prepare a fatted calf,
an action that frames the generosity of hospitality in a way that promotes giving the best of what you
have to your guests. This act by Abraham is recounted in surah 51:24 37, The Dispersing, which
clarifies that the visitors were honored guests and the proper greeting of Peace

Causes Of Economic Inequality
Income inequality is one of the largest fear mongering tactics that the left likes to use in order to
advance their ideology. The differences in income in America can be attributed to many different
factors, however much of the theories presented by the major distribution services do not reflect
reality. Economic inequality is the difference in income between individuals across the United States.
Sociologists define the social stratification of this as being the upper, middle, and lower classes. The
upper class (the 1%) household makes $380,000+, with the middle class making upwards of $150,000,
with the lower class being at the poverty level (around $25,000 for a family of 4 and around $20,000
for a family of three). There have been many solutions presented in order to tackle this subject,
however many of them have not been practical enough to get the job done. What are the root causes of
economic inequality and can it be fixed? This question has been addressed by numerous people and
usually becomes increasingly popular during presidential campaigns. This past election has brought to
light many of the disagreements and divisions between the country when it comes to dealing with
social and economic issues. Liberals believe that income inequality is due to the faults of the 1% and
that wealth should be redistributed. They believe that there are structures in place that limit the lower
and middle lower classes from rising through the ranks. Conservatives tend to approach income
inequality in a different way. They believe that inequality is one of the things that will always be
present in society. Furthermore, they believe that your income is proportional to the kind of person
you are based on your creativity, work ethic, and resources. Thomas Sowell, one of the leading
economists and prolific authors, states that demographics means you can not have income equality.
For example, Japanese Americans are more than 20 years older on average than Puerto Ricans in the
United States. A 40 year old man, for example, has more than 10 times as much job experience as a 20
year old man, if you start counting from the age of 18 as adulthood. So there was never a reason to
expect equality. So I go through many different

Essay about Social Classes in Wuthering Heights
Social Classes in Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights, a gothic novel written by Emily Bronte in the early nineteenth century, describes
the conflict and the passionate bond between Catherine Earnshaw and her rough but romantic lover,
Heathcliff. In the beginning of the book, Heathcliff, an orphan is made a part of the Earnshaw family.
This adoption is not readily accepted by the older brother, Hindley, who sees the new child as a rival
to his claim of dominance in the family. However, Catherine, the sister is quickly attracted to young
Heathcliff, so different from anyone she had ever known. As the two grow older, Heathcliff finds
himself falling in love with Catherine. Mr. Earnshaw soon dies, leaving Hindley in charge of the ...

Heathcliff is so desperate for acceptance that he is willing to cheat people to gain the property he
craves. By doing so he hopes to show
Catherine that he is worthy of her, a landowner in his own right.
After Catherine accepts Edgar s proposal, she seeks out Nelly and tells here that [I]t would degrade
[her] to marry Heathcliff now; so he shall never know how [she] love[s] him; and that, not because he
s handsome, Nelly, but because he s more [herself] than [she] [is].
Whatever [their] souls are made of, his and [hers] are the same, and
Linton s is as different as a moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire. (Page 74, lines 29 33).
Heathcliff overhears this conversation between Nelly and Catherine and leaves Wuthering Heights
after hearing Catherine say that it would degrade her to marry him.
Heathcliff tries to make himself more presentable to Catherine by moving up the social system.
However, he does this by cheating and taking advantage of people. Heathcliff takes advantage of
Hindley s state of alcoholism and takes over Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff also takes advantage of
Edgar Linton s will my making young Catherine (the daughter of Catherine Earnshaw and Edgar
Linton) marry Linton (the son of Heathcliff and Isabella Linton) so he could acquire Thrushcross
Grange (where Edgar Linton lives).
Bronte seems to have mixed opinions of the lower class by characterizing Heathcliff positively and
negatively. Lockwood,

Cloning Inhumane Analysis
Just last year, James s dog, Starshine passed away; today, james plays fetch with Starshine everyday
after he comes home from school but Starshine isn t who she is last year before her tragic death. In
truth, the Starshine James plays with nowadays is the original Starshine s clone. People all around the
world have been cloning their pets before their pets die. However, different people have completely
different opinions on this method. Some believe that instead of cloning their pets, people should just
save an animal at an animal shelter rather than spending thousands of dollars on a clone. Others say it
s a positive way of keeping their pet around. In my opinion, the act of cloning animals is completely
inhumane because the clone still won t be exactly the same as the original, especially ... Show more

This was the case for a couple living in Texas: they cloned their beloved pet Chance, a Brahman bull,
but the results were quite a surprise. Chance was a kind, and timid bull, unlike others of his kind, and
loved to take pictures with children; when he died, it greatly devastated the couple. Eventually, they
payed to clone Chance. In contrary, the cloned Chance didn t have the gentle manner the previous
Chance had; the clone was restless, and very violent. Furthermore, the husband had to be hospitalized
several times after quite a few violent encounters with the pet. Cloning has this aspect and effect on
animals, which is one reason why people are strongly against human cloning. In addition, although
there aren t any studies uet that specifically study the behavior of cloned animals and pets, research on
cloned cows and pigs prove that there are behavioral differences and even some difference in the
phenotype. Therefore, cloning truly doesn t bring back one s pet, for that they are different

A Comparison Of Dragons In Beowulf And The Faerie Queene
Dragons in Beowulf and in Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene
When one usually thinks of a dragon, one thinks of dragon slayers, adventure, damsels in
distress, and cheap fantasy novels. Dragons in literature have not always been used for such
meaningless
entertainment. There are many precedents for dragons in medieval literature, two of the most
prominent
being in the Old English poem Beowulf and in Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene. In both of these
epic poems, dragons play major antagonistic roles. The foe of Beowulf and the two dragons in The
Faerie Queene serve as important symbolic parts of the story and as reflectors that bring out the good,
or
bad, qualities of the hero. Although each dragon represents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

During the ensuing battle the Warren 2
dragon is constantly emitting fierce battle fire and fatal flames that light the land (Beowulf 80).
Christine Rauer, author of Beowulf and the Dragon: Parallels and Analogues, says that Beowulf is in
fact
fighting fire and heat and that with the especially serpent shaped dragon, he is in fact fighting an
incarnation of the devil, or more likely, what the devil represents (Rauer 33). The first dragon from
The
Faerie Queene enters in Canto Eight, also full of fire and hell imagery: the proud Duessa came high
mounted on her manyheaded beast, and every head with fyrie tongue did flame, and every head was
crowned on his creast (Spenser 875). The third dragon is perhaps the most fiery of all: swolyne with
wrath and poyson, and with bloudy gore and with roused and brazen scales, it seems to personify
the king of all evil: Satan (Spenser 914). As his red and black body descends upon his foe, blazing
eyes...did burne with wrath, and sparkled [with] living fire (Spenser 915). He is so evil in looks that
even the cloudes before him fled for terror great and all the heavens stood amazed with this threat
(Spenser 916). These fiery images associated with the dragons connect them with hell and therefore
with
the opposite side of the hero. This association with the Devil is important to understand the

A Christmas Memory Truman Capote
In the story, A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote, Buddy is the main character in the story that
doesn t have a real family that looks after him, except for his older cousin, who is the only person who
has ever offered to foster him and who would give up everything just for him. Buddy and his older
cousin have such a strong bond because they have been one another s family for a long time, they
have become best friends since they have done everything together while their other relatives have left
them to fend for themselves; true friends are the ones who would do anything to make you happy
when you re at your worst, this is exactly what buddy s cousin was for him and what he was for her.
To start off, Buddy doesn t have a family to fall back on except for his cousin, he makes sure that his
cousin is always well taken care of and is always happy. Buddy will do absolutely anything for his
cousin, just as she would do for him. Buddy went to pick out a tree far from where they had gone
before because it made his cousin happy, Queenie wades the stream first, paddles across barking
complaints about the swiftness of the current. (69) Buddy would never go against his cousins wishes
knowing that it would disappoint her, Buddy goes to get the tree with his cousin even though he
knows that is it dangerous. Buddy knows that the tree is something that she wanted and it meant
something big to her, she is the only person Buddy has ever really had to care about, he wants the best
for her no matter what it is that he has to do.
Additionally, Buddy and his cousin maintain a successful life by working together and coming up with
creative ways to earn money, they never grew up having enough money, so they had to make up for it
by earning it themselves. Last summer others in the house contracted to pay us to a penny for every
twenty five flies we killed. Oh, the carnage of August: the flies that flew to heaven! (66) They worked
well together that summer in order to get the money from their relatives, they most likely figured that
if their relatives were going to give them anything, let it might as well be money. Buddy and his
cousin may not have liked each other, but they sure did work well together when they were given

Port Alberni Research Paper
Conservation Versus Industry For all intents and purposes, Port Alberni was historically a logging
town. This means that its industry was once clearly centered around natural resources intensive
employment. Other forms of natural resource employment like salmon fishing are also prominent in
the region (Mellis, 2009). This is an industry that is very important to this community. Even other
workers engaged in other industries like sales or administration may work for a company that
ultimately does natural resource based business. This dependence on the industry is made clear in the
demographic data which shows that Port Alberni s percentage of workers engaged in natural resource
industries is nearly double that of nearby Victoria and much higher ... Show more content on

work. This could help to diversify the economy and allow people to get jobs from activities that work
in tandem with conservation. It would give a natural economic incentive for people to keep the forests

The Lady In The Lake
The subjective cinema has not been popular since the film The Lady in the Lake (1946) was produced.
The subjective cinema has the status of a curiosity rather than of a major contribution to screen
practice (McFarlane 1996: 16). The most used ways to shown a first person narrator in the subjective
cinema is the usage of point of view shot or succession shots. An example of this can be found in film
version of Rebecca West s novella The Return of the Soldier (1982). The first person narrator of the
original work is transferred to the movie as point of view shots. Although this preponderance of point
of view shots is by no mean equivalent to the continuing shaping, analysing, directing consciousness
of a first person narrator (McFarlane 1996: 16), it is one of the elements. In movies it is possible to
adjust the point of view from which an event of object is seen. However, it is ... Show more content on

Voice over, as Chatman (1999) describes it, comes neither from a visible object or person nor from off
frame. The source of the sound/voice is absent. Voice over plays an important role in cinema, as some
films, like Woody Allen s Radio Days (1987) may be incomprehensible without it. In Hollywood
production, voice over is very common and often used at the beginning of films. However, in some
films voice over is used throughout. Chatman notes John Ford s adaptation of Richard Lewellyn s
novel How Green Was My Valley (1941) as an example of such usage. The movie is narrated by Huw.
As a character he is a young boy, but as a narrator he is an old man. The sustained voice over keeps
the feeling of nostalgia in the audience s mind. McFarlane emphasises an importance of voice over in
films as [w]ords spoken in voice over accompany images which necessarily take on an objective life
of their own. One no longer has the sense of everything s being filtered through the consciousness of
the protagonist speaker (1996:

William Garrison and the Abolitionist Movement
The Abolitionist movement was a reform movement that pursued to terminate the enslavement of
Africans and people of African descent in American, Europe, and Africa. Abolitionist thoughts and
ideas became more and more noticeable in Northern politics and churches starting in the 1830s, which
subsidized to the hatred and bitterness between North and South leading up to the Civil War. One
important abolitionist in this movement was William Lloyd Garrison. He was an American journalist
and a militant abolitionist who helped lead this popular and successful abolitionist movement against
slavery in the United States.
William Garrison was born on December 10, 1805 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. In 1818, at the age
of 13 years old, Garrison was chosen and selected to a seven year training and apprenticeship as an
editor and a journalist. During this apprenticeship, he believed that this was his calling, which was to
start journalism. Through Garrison s numerous and different newspaper jobs, he developed adequate
skills to be capable of running his own newspaper. After he finished his training in 1826, Garrison lent
money from his last boss and bought The Newburyport Essex Courant. He then changed the name of
the paper the Newburyport Free Press and used it as a political instrument for conveying the feelings
and ideas of the old Federalist Party. In this newspaper, he also issued John Greenleaf Whittier s early
poems. John Whittier and William Garrison became very good friends

Fire In Fahrenheit 451
Over time, fire has molded the world of today, welding the Earth through its perpetual blaze. Fire
kindles life, but provokes death. Fire provides warmth, but sparks devastation. From wild
conflagration to tender flames, fire holds responsibility for the construction and destruction of society
today. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, fire burns throughout many aspects of the story,
symbolizing permanent destruction, evil, and happiness and protection in order to disclose the theme
that the ability to learn and think for oneself is a vital aspect of society.
In this Bradbury uses symbolism in order to portray fire as permanent destruction. After the firemen
burn the rebellious woman along with her home and books, Montag narrates ... Show more content on

The novel commences with Montag lighting a fiery inferno in a sinister ritual of burning books. This
opening scene is reported by Bradbury, who recounts With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his
stolid head, and his eyes all orange flames with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter
and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red, and yellow, and black (3).
The wild fire in this situation denotes evil because the flames burning in his eyes are representative of
the evil motives within Montag for destroying books which are vital to many people. One morning, as
Montag examines the other fireman with whom he works, Bradbury articulates that Montag looked at
these men whose faces were sunburnt by a thousand real and ten thousand imaginary fires (33). Fire
here embodies the evils in life that these men endured or witnessed. Instead of describing these men as
battered from the detrimental, grievous things that they d experienced, he describes them as veterans
of the burning of ten thousand metaphorical fires. At this point in the story, before Montag opens up
his mind, fire represents the turpitudes that overwhelm Montag s dystopian

Comparing The Novel Out, Out And Disabled
Compare the ways in which the writers create sympathy in Out, Out and Disabled
In the poems, Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen both create sympathy for the characters through
different ways. In Disabled , Owen paints a vivid, moving picture of a soldier who has been injured in
World War One and lost his legs and an arm. Wilfred Owen himself took part in the war, consequently
witnessing first hand many young men whose lives were similarly destroyed. In the poem, Out, Out ,
Robert Frost shows the fragility of life in two ways. Firstly alluding to Shakespeare s metaphor in
Macbeth s soliloquy Out, out, brief candle , which informs the reader that life is very short and fragile.
Moreover, Frost looks at the themes of sudden death and child labour to help to make this a very sad
and shocking poem. The poem reflects the tragedy of the accidental death of a child doing a man s job.
Frost s description of setting, imagery, and tone create a moving poem with a horrifying ending that
leaves the reader feeling despaired at the bleakness of the situation and quite shocked.
Even in the structure of the poem, Wilfred Owen shows us a compassionate portrait of loss by
switching between and comparing the soldier s experiences before and after war time, and the related
memories and emotions, for instance:
And girls glanced lovelier as the air grew dim
In old times, before he threw away his knees .
This example shows the constant comparison and reminder of the soldier s loss

  • 2. How Did Philip II Change The Military Philip II took control of Macedon in 359 BC as Macedon was going through a deep crisis. On the verge of collapse with having recently lost 4,000 men and Persiccas killed in battle against invading Illyrians and his death opening several security threats, Macedon was in desperate need of a ruler. With the heir to the throne only an infant Philip persuaded the officials to recognise him as king in place of his infant nephew. Philip quickly realised the weakness of his country s army and drew upon past experiences to mould them into a supreme army. He effectively reformed the Phalanx, Cavalry, siege craft and weapons to gain military supremacy and hegemony. Before Philip, the Phalanx was extremely week with weapons, layout and manoeuvrability. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The weapons and shield were big, bulky and impractical as seen by Philip. Philips reform to the use, and style of weapons made it easier and more effective for soldiers to fight. Similarly to how Philip changes the structure of the army from a citizen army to a professional army, he had to change the weaponry that was use. Previously as armies were citizen armies, each solider obtained their weaponry from themselves, resulting in a vast variety of styles and quality of weapons. Philip successfully changed this by creating a professional army, who was paid by the State and with everything provided by the State. This not only created unity within the men fighting by also new and uniform weapons, generating a better army. Weapons that Philip created that effectively lead the Macedonian army to success include the Sarissa. The Sarissa was a six meter long pike gave its wielder many advantages both offensively and defensively. The added length against enemies meant that a Macedonian solider could stab its enemy with the Sarissa while still being out of touch of the enemies pike. The Sarissa was effective as it kept the solider with safe distance from enemies; it was designed so that if or when it broke, it was able to be turned around and used again, hence the versatility of the weapon being vital and effective to the Macedonian army. Philip also introduced that each man possessed a double ended sword. Once his Sarissa was broken he was still able to take part in hand to hand sword fighting, of which Philip made sure that they were highly trained as Diodorus said that Philip trained and disciplined his troops to extremely high proficiency, as is shown on the many successful battle fields. The reformed shield being lighter and smaller also made it easier for the men to sword fight when necessary. This reform in the Macedonian professional army was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How The Low Income Of Countries Such As Chad And Papua New... Introduction This report is to help introduce the low income of countries such as Chad and Papua New Guinea, and comparing them to a country such as Sweden who has no income. For years, certain countries, as the two listed above cannot maintain a lifestyle with the incomes that are available to them. Using incomes will help to see where the problem is occurring and how it might be approached to aid the countries. Reporting on the countries will give insight into a historical background including independence of the countries, along with education, literacy, life factors, and poverty by using the GINI to show how wide the gaps can be and become. Historical Background In 1946 Chad became an Overseas Territory of France and on August 11, 1960 obtained independence, but short lived, because of a tyrant dictator, Francois Tombalbaye, who never really released them from his grip, and Chad had been in a civil war, until 1990 when Idriss Deby, a military commander, took control and with his rule, multi party politics has returned to Chad, giving some freedoms back to its citizens (Chad s long road to independence, 2010). Papua New Guinea was under the government of Australia, and the UN pushed Australia to give Papua New Guinea independence and help create a group that would be able to run a government through social and educated influences. On September 16, 1975 Papua New Guinea obtained their independence with a monarchy ruled by Queen Elizabeth II as head of state represented ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. John Dewey Philosophy A philosopher is known as someone who rationally investigates the truths and principles of being, knowledge and conduct (Howe , 2010). According to (Justarius, 2007), A philosopher looks at the world in wonder. He seeks the underlying meaning of things. He wants to understand it and codify it into a system of thought. Being a philosopher means to engage in the never ending quest for being fully and authentically human (Kimura, 2013). In the world today, there are many philosophers that have walked this planet. John Dewey is one of the most important Philosophers that has contributed his theory to the world. John Dewey was born October 20, 1859, in Burlington, Vermont. Dewey thought that people learn the best through experiences. He believed that learning was active and schooling unnecessarily long and restrictive. His idea was that children came to school to do things and live in a community which gave them real, guided experiences which fostered their capacity to contribute to society (Neill, 2005). Instrumentalism is a theory of knowledge created by Dewey in which ideas are seen to exist primarily as instruments for the solution of problems encountered in the environment. He thought knowledge could be falsified which needed to be consistently challenged and experimented on. He emphasized on inquiry based education (Bhuiyan, 2015). The British had a major impact on the educational system in Trinidad and Tobago. The system reflects the British colonial that once ruled the islands (Ali, 2015). • 5. The Perfect Homecoming The Perfect Homecoming J.K. Rowling once said, Rock bottom became the foundation on which I rebuilt my life. In 2017 the United States had one of the harshest hurricane seasons in a long time, leaving a lot of people at rock bottom . During the season Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston. The Washington post said, Harvey has unloaded 9 trillion gallons of water. The Weather Channel stated that Rockport, TX experienced 130 MPH winds. The storm was devastating, flooding most of the city which destroyed countless buildings and homes. When one thinks of home, the first thing that comes to mind is not always school. But to the students and staff of Lutheran South Academy, their school was not just a place to learn; but a community where everyone feels like they are a part of a family. When disaster strikes, people lean on family for support. The disaster of Hurricane Harvey did a number on the campus, destroying many of the buildings belonging to this community. The flooding of the LSA campus due to Hurricane Harvey displaced the institution forcing them to struggle with the efforts of rebuilding what was destroyed in the flood. However, if people would endure the struggle together and help rebuild instead of leaving when complications arrive then LSA would be restored in better time and of better quality. The devastation of Harvey on the LSA community forced them to move into the facilities of Sagemont Church, near I 45 and the Sam Houston Tollway. The church was very ... They might give Plaza the option of easily taking back the initial investment, however, they would not be a focus for FDI nor would help in promoting Zaragoza as an important logistic European center. International companies are still doubtful of settling down in PLAZA. They still do not see the advantage of committing to a place where none of the services offered are already up and running. Despite the facility, the airport still has very small cargo activity. Railways are being built, but not a single train stops at PLAZA, therefore opportunities of linking with ports are still to be exploited. Intermodality is still at the planning stage and the direct connection to Europe through the Pyrenees is seemed as a long term project. The brightest view of opening a tunnel through the Pyrenees is ten years away, due to the sudden investment necessary to both Spain and France. The pillars of PLAZA cannot be built without the necessary infrastructure. Up till now it is not a strong strategic area and is unable to apply Intermodality; the only benefit is the comparatively low cost of land. However, the cheaper land is not a very attractive choice for multinational companies; this will not draw them to the park. The achievement of the project is still at risk. Managers, backed by the government, still have to work tough to build up strong reliability and make sure that the essential infrastructure is put in place so that Plaza becomes the best logistic park in ... Tolkien amp;#8217;s book The Fellowship of the Ring, it is almost like a medieval contest between the two with many of the similarities coming from the customs of the Middle Ages. A look at the make up of the groups involved, the moral code, the protagonist, the antagonist, the use of supernatural elements and the knightly quest involved in each book shows how alike they are but yet different. He believed for a personality change to occur the counsellor would need to use the six core conditions and use them continuously over a period of time (Rogers, 1957). The first step would have involved the counsellor to create a psychological contact with Felicia. The second step within the process would be the counsellor needs to ensure that Felicia is in a state of incongruence. Incongruence is the difference of the client s self image and actual experience. If Felicia s self image and actual experiences don t match it could lead her to feeling vulnerable and create anxiety. On the other hand, the counsellor needs to be congruent. This would mean the counsellor will be himself 100%. This will involve the counsellor being honest and transparent of who they are and not putting up a façade. The counsellor should show unconditional positive regard (UPR) to Felicia. Unconditional positive regard is the counsellor accepting and supporting the client without judging them. The fifth condition the counsellor should actively use would be empathy. Empathy is the skill to understand another individual s feelings. This is vital within therapy. The counsellor should be able to experience the client s feelings without it having effect on their emotions. It was a suc cess ful successful day, read the final line in the book. My heart began to race as my eyes grew wide like an owl s. Had I really just read a whole chapter book by myself? I sprung out of my bed and ran to go tell my mom. Mommy, I just finished reading a chapter book all by myself! I exclaimed with a wide smile plastered on my face. I m so proud of you! my mother responded. I knew that you could do it! My mom gave me a huge hug. At that moment, I realized that all of the long hours of practicing and reading had paid off. I could finally read a chapter book. Since I was young, my parents made reading a priority for me. When I was in kindergarten at my preschool, I had a reading teacher who worked one on one with me to increase my level. As a result, I was confident in my reading ability and excited for the first day of first grade at my new red bricked elementary school. As I briskly walked through the main entrance and to my classroom the morning of the first day, I squeezed my parents hands tightly with butterflies in my stomach. I had only been inside the school one other time, at Meet the Teacher night, so I was still unsure of what to expect. We found my classroom and put my pink polka dot backpack and matching lunchbox on the hook below my cubby right inside the door. After finding my desk and sitting in my chair, my parents gave me ... The Narrative Paradigm By Scott Stroud Scott Stroud in his article Multivalent narratives: Extending the Narrative Paradigm with Insights from Ancient Indian Philosophical Texts critiques the narrative paradigm by pointing out its weaknesses and proposing revisions to the existing paradigm using ancient Indian philosophical narratives. Stroud claims that Fisher s paradigm is too limiting and conservative when dealing with foreign concepts and texts. The narrative paradigm does not allow people to experience new stories that may differ from their traditional stories challenging their values and/ or accepting new ones (Stroud, p. 372). Our judgment of a narrative is based on what we believe is just or true. New ideas or thoughts or values are not given a chance using the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Knowing that man is separate from Dattatreya will lead to the mind being cleansed and salvation. This narrative also says that Dattatreya is of this world, residing in everything of earth. The story argues against the separation of the subordinate and the deity, saying, There is no Shepard, no flock (as cited in Stroud, 2002). The deity tells man in order to achieve salvation he must meditate and work, but man should do neither in order to gain reward, taking care to chose actions wisely as those choices will impact future salvation (Stroud, 2002, p. 382). This text is full of contradictions; the deity is separate from man, the deity is with man and of the world, meditate and work to gain salvation, meditation and work are not important and will not gain man salvation. The second text is equally confusing and contradictory within itself and to the first text. The Devi Gita is a goddess of divine power who urges the reader to be devout only to her. She says she is also separate from the world, only later in the text to claim she is of this world and with man. • 14. The Last Major Overhaul Of Theu.s Tax Code The last major overhaul of the U.S tax code took place over twenty eight years ago as part of the Tax Reform Act of 1986. President Ronald Regan s Treasury Department proposed a tax neutral reform with the definitive duty of simplifying the overall code. However, the absence of any reform since then greatly reflects the United States current condition, in that The United States provides a good example of an uncompetitive tax code (Pomerleau Lundeen, 2014). The following will examine the main components of the tax code that make a nations taxing system competitive. It will then identify two parts of the code, that when combined create a disadvantageous environment for any American business who competes internationally. Foremost, most nation s taxing systems characteristically have five main features that either make them greatly competitive or not. Competitiveness includes desirability for both the society and business activity. A nations corporate rate, its consumption tax, property tax, the individual tax, and its international (global or territorial) are what make up the core features of competiveness. But is the competiveness of a nation s taxing system related for both industrialized and developing nations? The answer is yes, but not completely. The differences between industrialized, transitioning, and emerging countries are great, especially from a taxing and economic standpoint. • 16. A Person s Normal Ph Range A person s normal pH range is between 7.35 and 7.45. (Tortora, G., Derrickson, B. H. ,2014 01 22). This range is important for the body to function properly. There certain conditions that can cause the pH range to fluctuate. Acidosis is a condition in which the blood pH is below 7.35 and alkalosis is a condition in which the blood pH is higher than 7.45. Significant changes in pH range can affect cellular function and possibly lead to death. Your blood needs the right balance of acid and basic (alkaline) compounds to function properly . (George, K., 2013) Respiratory acidosis is a condition that happens when there is too much carbon dioxide in the lungs. When this happens, the blood becomes too acidic. People with respiratory acidosis will have a pH less than 7.35 with a PaCO2 greater than 45mm HG. (sitelms.org) This particular form of acidosis can be caused by diseases of the airways, lungs, and chest. It can also be caused by diseases that may affect the nerves and muscles that tell the lungs to inflate or deflate. Certain narcotics may cause this to happen as well. If respiratory acidosis does not become too severe the kidneys will help to raise the blood pH to the normal range. The kidneys increase the amount of hydrogen it releases and the reabsorption of bicarbonate. • 21. Lead Concentration In Schools Drinking Water This article was written about 1,500 New York City schools that have covered up the lead concentration in their schools drinking water, due mostly to outdated piped and water that is the wrong pH. The motive behind this is that schools that are found to have high lead levels are forced to replace their pipes and many schools can t or won t pay to fix the problem. Of course if a school can t fix the lead levels in their water system, the school will be shut down and faculty members are out of a job. In order to significantly lower lead concentrations pre test is was common practice for these schools to use a practice known as pre stagnation flushing . This basically means that they ran every single tap in the school for two hours the night before the test, which is also a huge waste of drinking water. Because of this many of the 1,500 schools passed the state s test for lead contamination. Unfortunately, this is all legal too. The article reads: Because the E.P.A. does not regulate the testing of water in schools, its guidance on pre stagnation flushing does not apply directly to New York s procedures. Mirroring mysticism, Maimonides saw God as transcendent, being completely unique as He is responsible for the existence of the world. Yet where Maimonides differs from mysticism is in his belief that the only way to know God is to know God s actions, and the only way to know God s actions is to study physics. The separation between the two theologies stems from metaphysics. According to Maimonides thought, our religious commandment is to study physics. The purpose of our existence is to perfect the image of God that we are created in, that is our rational soul, where our rational soul is life. The merging of philosophy, theology and physics compelled Maimonides to write the thirteen fundamental principles of the Jewish faith. In these fundamentals highlight the existence of the Creator in his absolute and unparalleled perfection and eternity as well as how God communicated to man through prophecy. A real seeker of truth must doubt everything once in their lifetime. Without doubt, we have no reason. Without reason, we cannot hold any truths to be correct. Descartes truly understood how the rudiments vested in us by an infinite power play a powerful role in the way we live today. 1. What is your initial point of view? My initial point of view is that in order to seek the truth, we must doubt. In doubting, we critically analyze the reason behind our thought process. What exactly makes a piece of wax that piece of wax? Is it even wax? We must doubt even the simplest of truths in order to reach a higher state of knowing. 2. How can you define your point of view more clearly? I can define my point of view more clearly by defining truth and doubt. Truth can be defined as an idea that holds certainty and be able to question and analyze. Doubt can be defined as uncertainty with a questionable premise. 3. What is an example of your point of view? An example of my point of view is in Descartes most noted wax example. We take into consideration a piece of wax, which has a color, shape, size, and will emit a sound. Once we burn the wax, everything changes. We don t question that it is the same wax, though. But why? How do we know that it is the same wax? Powdered wigs graced royal heads during the (), and the elaborate hairstyles of the Victorian, Edwardian and the Gilded Age were artistic creations that were impossible without hair pieces. For every era there are elaborate techniques for adding hair where needed or desired and as styles repeat themselves, ancient hair weaving techniques have returned as today s hair extensions. Millions of women will spend time and money on chemical curls, permanent relaxers and dyes to hide age or draw attention. While these maneuvers change the hair s appearance, they do not change the one thing that many men watch for, the length. Wigs give their wearers immediate gratification, but wig caps can be drying, inexpensive synthetic wigs can look unnatural, and human hair wigs can be too expensive. Add the wear and tear of having a wig s cap rubbing against the hair and length gained through patience can be lost to breakage. When modern women consider temporary length, hair extensions are often the answer. However, choosing high quality, human hair extensions means understanding human hair itself. • 38. Analysis Of Film Production Of The Merchant Of Venice Film Review Michael Radford s 2004 film production of The Merchant of Venice provides a well executed and generally faithful rendition of Shakespeare s play. Radford s production especially succeeds in both its casting and set design that elevates the mood and drama contained in Shakespeare s text. In addition to the filming, particular attention was taken to following the original text, but some interesting in liberties in plot details were taken. Radford s production serves as an exemplar of film adaptions of Shakespeare s play; it takes the challenge of adapting the text to the screen with excellent casting, bold filming, and well imagined sets. Jeremy Irons as Antonio, the merchant, gives a convincing mix of optimism converted to pessimism as he prepares for his death in the court. Perhaps the best casting, Al Pacino plays an excellent Shylock that initially invokes the movie watcher s empathy then turns quickly into an enraged, psychopathic persona reminiscent to his characters in Scarface or Godfather. Particularly, Pacino shows off his talent in the famous Hath not a Jew eyes monologue where Pacino takes us through a full emotional range of compassion, sympathy, to scorching rage. Similarly, Radford uses this scene to show off his directorial chops: the scene uses a follow shot in which the camera follows Pacino s character as he crosses the dark Venetian streets, through a brothel to find Antonio s comrades, and back into the streets where the heart of his ... Hospitality in the Qu ran Ideas on Cultural Hospitality in the Quran The virtues within the Qur an regarding hospitality and generosity seem to be a product of the landscape of pre Islamic Arabia. Indeed, the arid environment and tribal configuration of the society required that neighbors help each other, strangers or travelers be given food, and wealth be distributed evenly throughout the clan. The communities that settled along the trade routes of the Arabian Peninsula relied on merchants returning to their community to trade goods. One way to ensure this was to make the merchant feel welcome and become a temporary part of the household. If a follower gives, generously, and without selfish reasons, then God will provide for all of their needs, just as they have provided for others. The text goes on to express that even speech full of kindness and true appreciation is better than the act of charity that hurts (Qur an 2:263). Again this broad support for kind speech and generous giving is used as a lens through which the stories of hospitality can be viewed. The Qur an shows the importance of hospitality in two intertwined stories, and while the passages that dictate kindness, generosity and manners number well over twenty, the impact of these two hospitality accounts is memorable and complex. The stories actually involve two patriarchs from Israelite text, who play major roles in Qur anic teachings. The first is in surah 11:69 70 and involves Abraham s interaction with three strangers who turn out to be angels who have come to warn him about punishment of Sodom. They also bring news of Sarah s future conception and relate the story of their visit with Lot in Sodom. His first reaction to their arrival is to prepare a fatted calf, an action that frames the generosity of hospitality in a way that promotes giving the best of what you have to your guests. • 42. Causes Of Economic Inequality Income inequality is one of the largest fear mongering tactics that the left likes to use in order to advance their ideology. The differences in income in America can be attributed to many different factors, however much of the theories presented by the major distribution services do not reflect reality. Economic inequality is the difference in income between individuals across the United States. Sociologists define the social stratification of this as being the upper, middle, and lower classes. The upper class (the 1%) household makes $380,000+, with the middle class making upwards of $150,000, with the lower class being at the poverty level (around $25,000 for a family of 4 and around $20,000 for a family of three). There have been many solutions presented in order to tackle this subject, however many of them have not been practical enough to get the job done. What are the root causes of economic inequality and can it be fixed? This question has been addressed by numerous people and usually becomes increasingly popular during presidential campaigns. This past election has brought to light many of the disagreements and divisions between the country when it comes to dealing with social and economic issues. Liberals believe that income inequality is due to the faults of the 1% and that wealth should be redistributed. They believe that there are structures in place that limit the lower and middle lower classes from rising through the ranks. Conservatives tend to approach income inequality in a different way. They believe that inequality is one of the things that will always be present in society. Furthermore, they believe that your income is proportional to the kind of person you are based on your creativity, work ethic, and resources. Thomas Sowell, one of the leading economists and prolific authors, states that demographics means you can not have income equality. For example, Japanese Americans are more than 20 years older on average than Puerto Ricans in the United States. A 40 year old man, for example, has more than 10 times as much job experience as a 20 year old man, if you start counting from the age of 18 as adulthood. The subjective cinema has the status of a curiosity rather than of a major contribution to screen practice (McFarlane 1996: 16). The most used ways to shown a first person narrator in the subjective cinema is the usage of point of view shot or succession shots. An example of this can be found in film version of Rebecca West s novella The Return of the Soldier (1982). The first person narrator of the original work is transferred to the movie as point of view shots. Although this preponderance of point of view shots is by no mean equivalent to the continuing shaping, analysing, directing consciousness of a first person narrator (McFarlane 1996: 16), it is one of the elements. • 52. Comparing The Novel Out, Out And Disabled Compare the ways in which the writers create sympathy in Out, Out and Disabled In the poems, Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen both create sympathy for the characters through different ways. In Disabled , Owen paints a vivid, moving picture of a soldier who has been injured in World War One and lost his legs and an arm. Wilfred Owen himself took part in the war, consequently witnessing first hand many young men whose lives were similarly destroyed. In the poem, Out, Out , Robert Frost shows the fragility of life in two ways. Firstly alluding to Shakespeare s metaphor in Macbeth s soliloquy Out, out, brief candle , which informs the reader that life is very short and fragile. Moreover, Frost looks at the themes of sudden death and child labour to help to make this a very sad and shocking poem. The poem reflects the tragedy of the accidental death of a child doing a man s job. Frost s description of setting, imagery, and tone create a moving poem with a horrifying ending that leaves the reader feeling despaired at the bleakness of the situation and quite shocked. Even in the structure of the poem, Wilfred Owen shows us a compassionate portrait of loss by switching between and comparing the soldier s experiences before and after war time, and the related memories and emotions, for instance: And girls glanced lovelier as the air grew dim In old times, before he threw away his knees .
