Summer of Tech Profiles 2016
17. Why hire me
“Why hire me” main:
• 1st sentence - “I want to be a X” and then
sentence should be WHY !
• 3-4 paragraphs (Limited to 1,500 characters!)
• What are you interested about / passionate in
(Why do you like tech)
• What can you tell us about you (Why do you
like and what motivates you)
• Why you should be hired (What you can do for
a company)
28. Referees
Referees must be in NZ
● Character Referee is someone that is NOT
family & does not live in the same house. Do
NOT use your “mate”. Try a tutor or lecturer
● Work referees should be a manager or senior
to you.
● Tell your referees that they may be contacted
between M&G and Offers Day.
40. “Ask the SoT team for career advice,
they understand employers' needs better
than you do.”
“Research the roles on offer and
decide what you want to learn over
the summer”
41. “Employers sometimes ask 'what was
your favourite part of Summer of Tech?',
so make sure you pay attention and have
an answer.
There is a difference between 'attending'
bootcamps in quotes, and Attending with
a capital letter.”
43. “Treat Summer of Tech like a course!
The bootcamps are lectures and
bootcamps extras are assignments.
The Meet & Greet and interviews are like
exams. You need to prepare for them!”
45. “I invested a lot of time into my
profile, and it paid off. People
could recall my website profile
when I introduced myself!
Write more than you think you
need to. “
“Work on your "blurb". What you say
about yourself and what you’re
interested in etc etc.
You have to sell yourself to people to
get a job so start early and get good at
it haha (this includes your about me in
the SoT profile and your CV)”
47. What are the Bootcamps for?
● Introduce a concept that employers have
told us that is important
● Provide opportunities to practice new
stuff
● Find something that you might be
interested in and work on for pet project
● Provide opportunities to network / interact
with Industry
● Change the interview question - “Do you
know X” - “Err. No” into “Yes, I did the
bootcamp on X. Here’s what I learned...”
48. “Attend bootcamps and stay
behind to talk to the speakers”
“Attend every SoT event possible
(especially the job interview related
ones)”
“Attend all the things you are
interested in! Do worry if you don’t
know anyone else there or if you don’t
really know what its about, if it sounds
cool to you make an effort to go :)”
50. “Attend every Hackathon (SoT
events & others; keep an eye out
for GovHack, Health Hack, Hack
Miramar, GameJams & Maker
events)”
“Register early for bootcamps to get in
and prepare all the info required.”
52. “Talk to companies, don't just
sit around with your friends
gossiping, all SoT events are
great networking opportunities.”
“At the M&G go for the smaller and
less well-known companies as well,
you are more likely to get an interview
and an internship.”
“If you’re shy about meeting a
company, find a SoT helper, they
will introduce you”
54. “Always follow up after your interview,
it shows you not only appreciate the
time they gave to you but also that you
are really interested.
If you aren't interested after the
interview process, you should let them
know as well.”
56. “Do everything you can to get to
Hackfest as it's an awesome
experience and gives you the
opportunity to both talk to companies
and also demonstrate your skills”
