Snehana (Oleation)
• It is the therapeutic process of
imparting the oiliness
• It produces softness & unctuousness
in the body.

Introduction of snehan
• It is the therapeutic procedure & can be
utilized as the preparatory process for
purification or can be used as the main course
of the therapy
• e.g. In Anaemic patient Dadimadi Ghrutum is
used for Internal Snehana before Virechana
• e.g. In Asthma Vasa Ghrutum is used for
internal snehana before Vaman

Snehana -- Indications
• In Stomatitis, esopahagitis, Gastritis,
duodenitis, Colitis (Grahani) - Dadimadi
Ghrutm or even Cow Ghee is given for Internal
Snehapan
• Irimedadi oil can be used locally in the cases
of Stomatitis
• In Anemia (Pandu)- Kalyanak Ghrutum or
Pancha Gavya Ghrutum can be used for
internal snehapan

Snehana -- Indications
• In generalized wasting in Tuberculosis- Vasa
Ghrutum, Dhanvantaram Ghrutam is
beneficial for internal snehapan
• Dhanvantar oil or kuzumbu is beneficial for
external application – Abhyanga, pizzichil
• In Vata vyadhi & Musculoskeletal diseases like
Osteoporosis, Cervical pain, backache-
Lakashadi oil , Bala Ashwagandhadi oil is used
in Abhyanga, Basti karma

Snehana : Indications
• Neurological conditions like stroke,
Parkinson's, Alzheimer's - Dhanvantaram Oil,
Bala Oil, is used for Abhyanga, basti karma
• Brahmi Ghrutum, Panchagavya Ghrutam is
used for internal snehapan as well as for
Nasya

Snehana : Indications
• Hormonal problems like
• Infertility, impotency etc-
• Phala Ghrutum has excellent result which is
used for internal snehapan and Uttar basti

Types of Sneha
• According to the source from which oily
substance is derived –
1) Plant source- Sesame oil, olive oil,
Mustard oil, Castor oil etc.
2) Animal source- Bone marrow (Majja),
Body Fat (Vasa), Ghee etc.

Properties of sneha -- Oil or Taila
• As defined in literature ‘Tilodbhavum tailum’,
means oil derived from sesamum (til)
• Oil can be derived from any oil seed
• But in ayurvedic treatment sesame oil is the
most beneficial and is commonly used
• Hence the word ‘Taila’ or oil is sesamum oil
• It has bitter and pungent taste

Properties of sneha: Oil or Taila
• It is the best for decreasing increased level of
vata dosha
• It do not increases kapha dosha
• Softens skin
• Increases muscle power and muscle mass
• Relieves pain
• Good for eye sight

Properties of sneha -- Ghee
• The Gold Standard Sneha
• Out of all four types of sneha, ghee or ghrita
especially the one which is derived from cow
milk and is said to be of great value because of
its special quality ‘Sanaskaranuvartanam’
• It does not lose its own qualities, but in
addition it carries the qualities of the added
medicine

Types of Snehan –
According to Function
• 1) Shaman – Palliative
• 2) Shodhan – Pre Panchakarma
• 3) Bruhan – Nutritive ,Nourishing

Shaman sneha
• Primarily used when vitiation of doshas is
moderate
• It is used in low dose i.e. 5 ml to 40 ml OD or
BD. Shaman sneha is given before meal
(Bhuktavastha)
• This snehan used for the treatment of disease.
e.g. Dadimadi Ghrutum in Anaemia,
Panchatikta Ghrutam in skin diseases

Shodhan sneha
• Used as pretreatment of Panchakarma
• In Vaman, Virechan karma shodhan
sneha is used for internal oleation
• It is given in intermediate to large
quantity to the patient
• When sneha is given for shodhan karma ,dose
of sneha is gradually increased per day

Shodhan sneha
• We have time limitation for shodhan
sneha
• We can give it till samyak snigdha
lakshanas appear but not more than 7
days
• e.g.- Triphala gruta in obesity
• Panchatikta Ghruta in acidity as well as in
skin disease

Brunhan sneha
• Sneha is mixed with food and given to
the patient
• It is used in small quantity
• Due to its small quantity, it increases
agni (digestive power)
• Hence nutrients from food material are
better absorbed

Brunhan sneha
• That leads to proper nourishment of
dhatus.e.g. –
• Dhanvantaram oil or Kuzumbu is
recomonded in generalized debility of chronic
diseases like cancers or degenerative arthritis

• Now the capsules of Dhanvantaram oil are
available in the market

Types of Snehan
• According to Routes of administration ---
–External (Bahya snehana)
–Internal (Abhyantara Snehana)
• Shaman, Shodhan and Bruhan sneha are
the types of internal snehana

External or Bahya snehan
• Substances like siddha or Medicated oils,
siddha or Medicated ghrut or Ghee are
applied externally. e.g. ---
• Massage – Sarvang or Ekang Abhyanga, Shiro
Abhyanga (Head Massage), karnapurana,
Akshitarpan, Gandush, kavala, Shirodhara,
Shirobasti, Pizichhil, lepa (lepan), mardana etc.

• All of these mentioned methods of external
shehana are not used as compulsorily before
Pradhan Karma, they are used separately to
treat some other disorders
• Every time it is not necessary to followed by
main karma
• External snehan is best for skin problems

• Narayan oil for  -- Degenerative Arthritis
• Vishagarbha oil for --- Painful Joints
• Kshirbala oil for --- Shirodhara

• Anu oil or Panchendriya vardhan oil  for ---
Nourishing Natsya
• Shadbindu oil for ---- Shodhan Natsya

• Shatadhauta Ghruta for -- Fissures of
Palm & sole
• Chandan bala lakshadi oil for -- Baby
massage or for Osteoporosis
• Triphala Ghruta for -- Netra Basti in
Computer Eye Syndrome ( Asthenopia)

Internal or Abhyantara snehan
• Oily substances i.e.
• Siddha ghrut ( Medicated Ghee ) or
Siddha taila ( Medicated oil ) are taken
internally i.e. they are administrated
orally.

Types of Internal snehan
• i) Achhapan – use of only oily substances
alone . It has quick action
• ii) Vicharana – oily substances are mixed with
food material
• iii) Palliation – it is a medium dose given
before meals

Types of Internal snehan
• iv ) Tonification – It is given every day
with dietary substance in low dose

• v) Purification – Ghee is given before
Panchakarma procedure in large doses
for a period of three to seven days.

Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacodynamics
of Sneha Dravyas
• Guru (Heaviness) -- ,
• This quality of oily substance bring
heaviness, increase malas, increase body
mass index
• Hence useful in wasting conditions like
Tuberculosis, Anemia of chronic diseases,
Cancers & HIV

Guru (Heaviness)
• Because of this quality, oily substances
are not digest easily
• It means they last in GI Tract for a longer
duration
• This produces early satiety ( Satisfaction
or Trupti in Marathi)

Guru (Heaviness)
• Snehan dravyas are High Calorie
substances
• So must use carefully in obese patients or
High Cholesterol patients
• But then vaidya can use Medicated Ghee
or oil

Guru (Heaviness)
• These substances increase kapha dosha and
decrease vata dosha level. So they are useful
in Dhatu kshaya janya vata Prakop --
Degenerative Vata Problems
• These substances have Predominance of
prithvi( Earth) and apa mahabhuta( Water).So
they are Bruhan i.e Nutritive in action

Snigdha (Oiliness)
• Substances lubricates the channel in the body.
They nourish Schlek ,Bodhak ,Tarpak Kapha.
Useful in Osteoarthritis, Parkinson, Alzheimer
•
• They have Predominance of apa mahabhuta.
This property is used in Vata conditions like
Dryness of the skin or wrinkling of the skin in
ageing process.

Mand (Slow moving)
• These substances slow down the process of
Degeneration
• They work as Anti ageing
• Hence medicated Ghees & Oils are used in
Degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis (
Narayan oil ) , Alzheimer ( Natsya & Internally
Brahmi Ghruta) & Autoimmune diseases like
Psoriasis (Mahatiktak Ghutam) or Rheumatoid
arthritis ( Pinda Taila,Castor Oil)

Sukshma
• Sukshma (Minuteness / easily penetrating) :
The Oily substances can penetrate smallest
channels because of this quality
• They have Predominance of Aakash( Ether)
mahabhuta
• These Substances can cross the biological
membranes very easily like BBB ( Blood Brain
Barrier)

Sukshma
• To target the neurological sites Ghrutum or
Oils are preferred as they are the good
vehicles and drugs & can cross the Blood Brain
Barrier. e.g. -----
• In Bipolar disorder, Anxiety, Mental
Retardation ,Alzheimer's & Parkinson's
disease Brahmi Ghrtum is used for Nasya or
for internal use

Sukshma
• Mandukparni, Guduchi, Shankhapushpi,
Jyotishmati is used as Medhya Rasayana in
the form of Ghee to modify ----
• The cognitive brain functions

Mrudu (Softness)
• Because of this quality, oily substance
destroys strong binding of atomic particles of
a rigid material
• So they are helpful to remove stiffness ,which
is seen in many muscular problems like
Backache, Neck pain, Frozen shoulder ,Joint
stiffness

Dravam (Liquidity)
• Dravam (Liquidity) --- Liquid in nature. They
have spreading nature
• Pichhila (Sticky) -- Sticky in nature. It is useful
in osteoarthritis to prevent the degeneration
of articular cartilage and its healing process

Indications for Snehana
• 1) Prepartory procedure for Panchakarma
(poorvakarma)
• 2) Before Swedana (Sudation)
• 3) Vata dominated diseases (Spondylitis,
Osteoarthritis, Hemiplegia, Paraplegia)
• 4) Increased dryness in the body e.g. dry skin,
early ageing process etc

• 5) Increased stress, after heavy work done-
Anti stress regimen.(Abhyanga, Dhara, Basti)
• 6) Rakta and shukra kshaya- Dadimadi
Ghrutum, Kalyanaka Ghrutum , Phal Ghrutum ,
Panchagavya Ghrutum etc
• 7) Anxiety- Shirobasti with Amalki Oil

• 8) Eye diseases dryness of the eyes like
Computer Eye syndrome ,Asthenopia ( Tired
eyes) - Triphala Ghee is used for Netra Basti
• 9) Frozen shoulders- Prasarini Oil is used.
• 10) In Ageing Population to take care of
Arthritis (Maha Narayan Oil), Constipation
(Chinchalavan tail for Basti, Castor Oil as
internally), Insomnia (Neeli Bhrungyadi Oil),
Hearing loss (Bilwadi Oil)

Contraindications for Snehana
• 1) Increased Ama ( In these cases first vaidya
can do Ama pachana with Amapachak vati or
Agnitundi vati or Trkatu tablet )
• 2) Increased kapha dosha, increased meda
dhatu or kaphaja conditions like Too much
cough in the chest in cases of Bronchiectasis
Obesity with high cholesterol

• 3) Increased salivation called as Ptyalism
• 4) Decreased digestive power called as
Agnimandya with bowel problems, loss of
appetite, abdominal gas

• 5) Diseased conditions like fever, vomiting,
diarrhoea, dysentery etc. where again Ama
samprapti or pathogenesis is predominant
•
• 6) Pregnancy ( Altered Physiological status ,so
vaidya can be little careful) – only nutritive or
Bruhan snehan can be done

Snehana-Procedure-Steps
• Observe the indications
• Firstly decide whether patient is indicated for
Snehana or not
• Decide the Quantity, duration and the type of
oily substance used in the treatment

• Examine the digestive power of the patient
• The quantity of the oily substance depends on
digestive power of the patient
• Proper quantity of oily substance is of great
importance
• Improper quantity may produce many adverse
effects like drowsiness, stiffness, itching,
fever, pain, vertigo, flatulence etc.

• Examination of digestive power can be done
by giving the testing dose of oily substances
to the patient
• This testing dose is termed as ‘Rhasiyasi
matra’ of Snehana
• Time taken by the patient to digest this dose
decides the proper dose
• This testing dose is generally of 50 gm

• So mathematical Equation will be as follows
• If Patient is takes 3 hours for Digestion of 50  Grams
then How much will be quantity to Digest in 6 hours
? Answer will be 100  Grams ! This will be Rhaswa or
Small dose.
• 200 Gm will be digested in 12 hours .This is Madyam
or Moderate dose .
• 400  Gm will be digested in 24 hours .This will be
Uttam or High Dose.

Snehan - Dose Determination
• Small quantity (rhaswa matra):--
• This quantity of oily substance is digested in 6
hours

• Moderate quantity (madhyam matra):--
• This quantity of oily substance is digested in
12 hours
• It is given to the patient who has moderate
digestive power & also this dose is expected
,while giving sneha in Purva Karma

• High / large quantity (uttam matra): --
• This quantity of oily substance is digested in
24 hours
• It is given to the patient with very high
digestive power

Snehan-Duration of the Therapy
• It depends on -----
• Agni (digestive function) and -----
• Koshtha (Sensitivity of colon or bowel
movement)

Snehan - Approximate time:-
• i) Mrudu koshtha ---
• Even consumption of milk can cause soft &
watery stool
• These kind of people require approximate 3
days for complete oleation

• ii) Madhyam koshtha --
• Mild laxative Like Tab Triphala - is enough for
the bowel movement.
• These kind of people required approximate 5
days for complete oleation.

• iii) Krur koshtha --
• Need strong purgation and have a tendency of
Constipation .Require Strong Prgative Like
Tab Ashwakanchuki
• These kind of people required approximate 7
days for complete oleation

How to take sneha?
• i) Oily substances should be taken on empty
stomach, early in the morning.
• It should be taken with lukewarm water with
added salt
• Fasting should be done until the oily substance
is fully digested & hunger sensation develops

How to take sneha?
• ii) Symptoms may develop ,during digestion of
oily substance –
• Headache
• Vertigo
• Increased salvation
• Increased thirst
• Burning sensation in the body etc

How to take sneha?
• iii) Symptoms indicating full digestion of oily
substance –
• Relief from above said symptom to great
extent
• Feeling of lightness in the body
• Feeling of hunger
• Easy passage of gases

How to take sneha?
• . iv) If one is doubtful about the digestion of
oily substance, then ---
• Ask patient to drink some lukewarm water
• If fresh belching occurs, digestion is complete
• If oleated belching occurs, then it is the
indication of incomplete digestion

After digestion of Sneha
• Take bath with lukewarm water
• Then take easily digestible, light, liquid diet
• Next day again have oily substance
• Continue taking sneha every day till
symptoms of fully oleation appear on the
body ( in 3,5 or 7 days)

Symptoms suggesting proper oleation
• 1) Easy passing of gases
• 2) Nausea for oily substances (lack of desire for
them)
• It is called as Sneha Vidwesha in Ayurveda .
• Kindly note the difference for Nausea on First day &
Nausea on Last Day
• First day Nausea in patient may be due to he or she
is not accustom to take Ghee or Oil ,in such stomach
on Empty stomach .But Last day Nausea indication
saturation stage of oil or Ghee in the body.

Symptoms suggesting proper oleation
• 3) Soft and oily stools( In Sanskrit – Adhastat
Sneha Darshanam)
• 4) Lightness of the body
• 5) Oily skin
• 6) Feeling of tiredness

Symptoms suggesting excessive oleation
• It appears due to more oleation even after
symptoms of proper oleation appear. They are
as follow ----
• 1) Drowsiness
• 2) Nausea
• 3) Increased salivation
• 4) Increased nasal secretions
• 5) Anorexia

Rules to be followed after
panchakarma treatment
• 1) Time duration for the after treatment
(Samsarjan krama) is same as that of the
oleation. It means, if 5 days for oleation then 5
days for the after treatment
• 2) Always take lukewarm water for bath and
drinking
• 3) Avoid coitus, suppression of natural urges,
exercise, and heavy work

Rules to be followed after
panchakarma treatment
• 4) Avoid sleeping during day time or keeping
awake till late at night
• 5) Try to control the extreme emotional
behavior like anger, loud talk or anxiety
• 6) Freshly cooked, Non Spicy, light, easily
digestible food is advisable

What is Snehaviram i.e. breaking day ?
• After completion of internal oleation, next day
external oleation and sudation is given
• On the next day Vaman is given with prior external
oleation and sudation
• It means for vaman there is only one day break
• The dinner on the day before of Vaman ,Kapha
vardhak or Kapha increasing diet is advised like Udid
or black gram vada with curd or Rice & curd ,Banana
Sadha Rawa dosa without curry etc

What is Snehaviram i.e. breaking day ?
• The above procedure is repeated for
virechana with two days break
• Within these breaking days one must consume
light, easily digestible food.

Medicated oils & Ghees --
Formulation & Indications:
• Dear Students some oils or Ghrutas are
specially prepared by South Indian Ayurved
Pharmaceutical companies like CNN, CVN,
Arya vaidya shala Kottakal
• My personal experience about oils & Ghees
from these companies is very nice
• Even in Europe oils from South India is mostly
imported .So specially Maharashtra guys ,you
may note these different oils & Ghee .

Medicated oils
• 1) Irimedadi tailam --- Neuralgia, Tooth-ache,
Stomatitis, Mouth and Throat Diseases
• 2) Asana manjishtadi oil --- Diseases of the
Eyes and Ears
• 3) Asana vilwadi oil -- Diseases of the head,
eye, ear and Catarrhal affections

Medicated oils
• 4) Anu tailam --- Sinusitis, Headache and Premature
Graying of Hair and Nasal-Allergic Disorders
• 5)Bala guduchyadi coconut oil ---- Rheumatoid
Arthritis and Burning Sensation of the Body
• 6)Bala tailam --- .Bala is Nutritive.So useful in
degenerative problems . Rheumatic Disorders like
Paraplegia, Sciatica, Lumbago, Gout, Neuralgia (for
external and internal use)

Medicated oils
• 7)Cheriya Balaguluchyadi oil---- Catarrhal
affections, Headache and burning sensation of
the limbs
• 8) Bala dhathryadi oil ---- Diseases of Head
especially Head-ache
• 9) Bala ashwagandhadi oil--- Bala &
Ashwadandha ,both are Nutritive .So use in
Dhatu Kshayajanya Vata Prakop. General
massage oil

Medicated oils
• 10) Bhringa amalakadi oil --- Headache,
Insomnia
• 11)Chandanadi oil ---- Chandan or
Sandlewood is very costly but very cooling .So
in Pitta Prakop problems. Sleeplessness,
Memory loss
• 12) Chemparthydi oil --- Skin diseases,
especially of children like scabies, contact
dermatitis etc.

• 13) Dinesavalyadi tailam --- Scabies, Psoriasis
and other Dermatological infections
• 14)Dhanwantaram kuzhumbu – Very
Nutritive.Kuzambu means which contain
Yamal sneha i.e Oil & Ghee both .Well known
for Paralytic Disorders and also for women in
Pregnancy, as well as in post Traumatic cases

• 15)Dhurdhoorapathradi oil--- Dandruff
• 16)Eladi oil--- Eczema, Catarrhal infections and Skin
Allergy
• 17)Gandharva hastadi oil --- Rheumatic diseases, as
a laxative

• 19) Kottamchukkadi oil ---- Acute Rheumatic

labeled as Baby oil .Very nutritive for children
& delicate personality like Vata Pitta people or
problems .Can be used for Matra Basti

Nervous Disorders

• 22) Murivenna oil --- Very effective in cuts,

• 24)Valiya Narayana tailam --- Paraplegia and
Sciatica
• 25)Neeli bhrungyadi Kera tailam --- Hair oil
known for prevention of hair fall & Dandruff
and growth of hair.

Medicated oils
• 26) Pinda Tailam --- Rheumatoid & Gout
Arthritis
• 27) Sahacharadi oil --- Rheumatic Diseases
especially of the lower extremities, Lumbago,
Varicose Veins etc.

Medicated Ghee
• 28) Dadimadi ghrutham --- Anaemia,
indigestion, piles, promotes fertility.(Internal
use)

Medicated Ghee
• 30)Indukantham Ghrutam -- Rheumatic

weakness of the body etc
• 31)Jeevanthydi yamakam --- Skin diseases
especially for cracking of the feet and hand.
(for external use only)
• 32) Kalyanakam --- Mania, epilepsy, anemia,
toxemia, menstrual disorders.

• 33) Mahathikthakam Ghrutam ---- Tikta or
Bitter taste is useful as a blood purifier & as a
Bone Tonic .All types of dermatological
disorders like eczema, psoriasis & also in
Osteoarthritis ,Osteoporosis,etc
• 34) Patoladi Ghrutham --- Diseases of eyes,
nose and ears ,Liver Problems

Medicated Ghee
• 35) Shatadhautha Grutam ---
• Burning sensation of extremities and other
types of dermatological disorders caused by
the derangement of pitta. (for external use)
• e.g. Herpes Zoster, Sun burn etc.
• Also useful to reduce dryness of Vata
imbalance .So apply for fissure on Palm or
Feet

Medicated Ghee
• 36) Saraswatham Ghrutham --- It contains
Brahmi ,Brain Tonic .Develops intelligence and
memory

• 37)Thikthakam Ghrutam --- Dermatological
diseases caused by the Pitta like Herpes zoster
