2. WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate
matters or biological materials that cause harm or
discomfort to humans or other living organisms or causes
damage to the natural environments or built environment
into the atmosphere
3. Smog
Green house effects
Accidental air pollution
Industrial air pollution
Transport related air pollution
4.
5. What pollutants come out
of
vehicles?
The major pollutants are
carbon monoxide,
hydrocarbons,
nitrous oxides,
carbon dioxide, and
particulate.
Most car pollutants come from the exhaust but brake pads, tires, oil, grease,
anti-freeze, hydraulic fluids, and cleaning agents also contribute pollutants
to the environment.
6. Effects on Human Health
Carbon Monoxide : Affects :
• nervous system impairing physical coordination
•vision and judgments,
•creating nausea and headaches,
• reducing productivity and
•increasing personal discomfort.
7. Nitrogen
Oxides :
•Increased susceptibility to infections,
• pulmonary diseases,
•impairment of lung function and eye,
• nose and throat irritations.
Sulphur
Dioxide :
•Affect lung function adversely.
8. Particulate
Matter :
•Impairs liver and kidney,
• causes brain damage in children resulting in
lower I.Q.,
• hyperactivity and reduced ability to concentr
Benzene : : •Both toxic and carcinogenic.
•Blood cancer in high exposure areas.
10. •Many auto rickshaws and taxis in India use adulterated fuel.
This is done to lower down the price but it is the environment
and ultimately we who have to pay the price back. Some of the
adulterants are actually very harmful to the environment as
these emit unsafe pollutants which further deteriorate the quality
of air.
11. •30% children in Bangalore suffer from Asthma due to
air pollution. The city is also regarded as the asthma capital of India.
•In NDTV it has been shown that Delhi is the most polluted
city in the world and it left behind Beijing in air pollution.
Industrial and vehicular emissions have caused the pollution
to rise at this level in Delhi.
•Each day 1,400 new vehicles are added to Delhi roads.
17. Car pool : forming and implementing a car pool will reduce the
number of cars, there by, preventing air pollution by cutting down
the use of fossil fuels. This way, it will help in the sustainable use of
fossil fuel and its conservation for the future generation.
Vehicle care : timely servicing of the cars helps to keep it in a good
condition, and also minimizes fuel exhaust. Driving the car at an
average speed and turning off in traffic are the thumb rules to save
fuel. Make sure to use unleaded petrol and for regular pollution
checking of your car.
