- But Why is community so important for us?
If you think about our business: we only provide the platform but the hosts are the ones that make it unique and deliver the experience.
So if you enter the door of a stranger for the first time. This particular moment is something that the community provides. It’s not Brian or me opening the door.

Beginning of Airbnb not successful
Paul Graham “rather 100 that love you than 1m that like you”
Meet NYC community to learn and invest into the partnership
Airbnb started to make a difference
Like the Airbnb open we just held few months ago in Paris.
This is Chip Conley our Head of Global Hospitality speaking at our recent Airbnb Open last week.
5000+ hosts from over 110 countries came to the "Airbnb Open" convention in Paris.
You can see why we try to engage the community to deliver these kind of experience to guest.
Jenny + Cathrin
Jenny Community Ansprechpartner
Again community is one of our major drivers in growth.
Here you can see Jenny at one of our recent events in Berlin with one of our superhosts Katrin.
And we do these meet ups globally. We now have 20 offices around the globe, so we're incredibly local.
we organize meet ups all over the world to enable our community to get together and share their thoughts, ideas and even problems.
We need to know what our users want.
It is important to give your community the platform to meet each other.
So thats the big difference. We don't see an “us" and “them”.
Partners
A common mistake is to forget or abandon what made you successful. For us There is no Airbnb the company and Airbnb the community. There is just Airbnb. We are one community.
1st secret: make community love you
This is also best explained with an Example.
we talked about that B, J. & N. were not really successful until they were invited to participate in a start-up-programme at Y-Combinator where they met Paul Graham.
He told them: I’d rather make sure that 100 people love you than having a mio people kind of like you. Get to know your community!
The guys then decided to meet some members of the community in NYC and that’s when it started to make a difference.
In the beginning, when the Airbnb community was still tiny, our founders Brian and Joe would go to every single listing and take photos of the rooms themselves and to check the quality of the listings. We now have more advanced tools for this ;)
