GANTT CHART• Gantt chart is a type of a bar chart that is used for illustrating project schedules. Gantt charts can be used in any projects that involve effort, resources, milestones, and deliveries.• Although now regarded as a common charting technique, Gantt charts were considered revolutionary when first introduced. In recognition of Henry Gantts contributions, the Henry Laurence Gantt Medal is awarded for distinguished achievement in management and in community service. This chart is also used in Information Technology to represent data that has been collected.
• Gantt charts are used for project management purposes. In order to use Gantt charts in a project, there are a few initial requirements fulfilled by the project. First of all, the project should have a sufficiently detailed Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Secondly, the project should have identified its milestones and deliveries.
Project managers try to define the work break down structure while creating Gantt chart. This is one of the frequently practiced errors inusing Gantt charts. Gantt charts are not designed to assist WBS process; rather Gantt charts are for task progress tracking.
CRITICAL PATH METHOD (CPM)• The Critical Path Method (CPM) is one of several related techniques for doing project planning. CPM is for projects that are made up of a number of individual "activities." If some of the activities require other activities to finish before they can start, then the project becomes a complex web of activities.
CPM Provides The Following Benefits :• Provides a graphical view of the project.• Predicts the time required to complete the project.• Shows which activities are critical to maintaining the schedule and which are not.
ActivitiesAn activity is a specific task. It gets somethingdone. An activity can have these properties:•names of any other activities that have to becompleted before this one can start•a projected normal time durationIf you want to do a speedup cost analysis, you alsohave to know these things about each activity:•A cost to complete•A shorter time to complete on a crash basis•The higher cost of completing it on a crash basis
