3. Introduction
XYZ Company
This is a fictitious case example of XYZ company, that
shows how a company might build a corporate
network from scratch utilizing the internet.(Basically
benefits of the internet)
4. Function of Telecommunication
Visualization
1. Transmitting at the whopping speed of terabit over fiber
optic cable.
2. Twisted pair phone line coming into business as straw at a
operating speed DSL.
Competitive Local Exchange Carrier’s (CLEC’s)
CLEC’s bring new connection system in 1990’s; such as cable
modem, optical fiber, wireless, satellite and faster wire line.
5. Internet & Telecommunication
Internet actually started its journey in 1990’s by US
Department of Defense for their ARPANET
Because of constant technological change managers
can’t concentrate on their strategy
In late 90’s the page of internet became slower, so
managers get much time to use internet on their
operation
6. Internet’s Attributes
Ubiquity (everywhere at once)
Reliability
Scalability
This norms makes today's life end to end IP network
7. XYZ Company
XYZ Company which makes and sells widgets in the
process of installing a corporate network.
CTO has to make a lots of decision
That’s why he wants to introduce the Internet has a
heart of XYZ’s corporate operations
8. Network Options
An intranet for use by employees
An extranet for use by suppliers and some large
customers
The Internet as the all important central public
network
He also creates computer based system where clients
and employees make a request from other computers
which responded by server computers
9. Serving remote users
Every PC will be outfitted with a network interface
card (NIC) that lets it talk to the network.
XYZ has four choices of communications wiring:
i.Twisted pair(the standard telephone line)
ii.Coaxial Cable (like cable TV)
iii.Fiber optic(glass fiber that carries signals
via light pulse, backbone networks)
iv. Wireless
10. Serving remote users(Contd.)
For employees working from computers in their
homes, who need to transmit larger and larger files
such as PowerPoint and presentation, the CTO could
choose,
DSL Modems
Cable Modems
11. Serving remote users(Contd.)
Finally they decide to connect these remote users to
the corporate network and provide the speed and
security they need. They have company supplied
laptops and PDAs.
12. Serving local users
In the office, all the computers and telephones will be
connected directly to an always on LAN.
The various LANs in XYZ’s offices will use three types
of computers to route traffic:
i. Hubs are repeaters
ii. Switcher are smarter
iii. Routers are smarter
13. Other’s network
CTO wants to introduce Ethernet for sharing videos
and multimedia with employees at a specific time in
greater speed.
LAN is always connected with Intranet which is
protected from outside Firewall
It means “ A server lets email but doesn’t permit access
to application code”
It is only accessible by the employees with their given
protected password and ID.
14. Intranet –Communicating between
offices
To help XYZ employees communicate between sites
using WAN, the CTO set up a high speed
asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)-up to 622mbps.
ATM is used by telephone companies for their network
backbones. However, due to the high cost of ATM long
distance bandwidth, the CTO might not be able to
afford it.
15. Intranet –Communicating between
offices (contd.)
Gigabit Ethernet which operates at speed of 1gbps
(10⁹bit per second), it has been outselling ATM
because it is less costly.
16. Network Advantages
Communication
Shared peripherals
Shared data
Flexible access
Control of user access rights
Centralized administration
Simultaneous access to the Internet
