INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION
• In present era we hardly live for 65 years with plenty of diseases
right from the 1st decade of life
• But our ancestors had sufficient time to follow the regimen
(Dinacharya) whatever described in text. Hence they used to live
even beyond 100 years
• The reason for this may be busy schedule, stress, lack of
concentration towards personal hygiene, pollution, adaptation of
modern techniques etc.
• By following Dinacharya most of these objectives are fulfilled and
hence by maintaining it not only brings disease free individual but
also disease free society
• Brahme Muhurte Uttishtet is one among the Ayurvedic theories
explained in Dinacharya concept which has been attributed
as prevention of health of a healthy person
• Every person in this world must have heard the famous saying of
Benjamin Franklin that “ Early to bed early to rise, makes a
man healthy, wealthy and wise”
Brahma muhurthe(awakening in early morning)
BRAHMABRAHMA
• ‘Braahmi’ in Sanskrit means Saraswathi, the Goddess of
knowledge and intellect. This is thus also a great time for
acquiring knowledge and intelligence.
Brahma muhurthe(awakening in early morning)
• Muhurta is a Hindu unit of measurement for time in the Hindu
calendar
• A Muhurta equals 2 Ghadiyas or 48 minutes.
• Thirty Muhurtas constitute a day and night.
• 30×48 1440˭
• 24×60 1440˭
• Brahma means knowledge. The times opt for perceiving knowledge
is known as Brahma muhurta.
• Brahmi Muhurte Uttishtet (auspicious time for getting up from the
• bed) for Swastha acquiring health and longevity
• The last Yama of the Ratri (Night) is said to be Brahma muhurta
BRAHMA MUHURTA KALABRAHMA MUHURTA KALA
• Brahma muhurta starts 96 minutes before sunrise.
• Brahma muhurta ends 48 minutes before sunrise.
• From 04:24:00 AM to 05:11:59 AM is Brahma muhurta
• (If Sunrise is taken at 6 AM).
WHY ONE SHOULD GET UP IN
BRAHMI
MUHURTA?
• Which means Health is got from the sun, so one should get up early in
the morning before sunrise which supports the Brahme Muhurte
Uttishtet
• A person who is interested in avoiding diseases, who is determined
• to protect his life should get up in Brahmamuhurta
• To avoid Vyadhis and Alakshmi (poverty)
• But a person with diseases should sleep for maintaining the
Dhatusamyata
CONTD..
ASTANGA SANGRAHA:
• SUSRUTA SAMHITA:
• RUTUS IN DINACHARYA
• Begining of the day resembles Vasanta Rutu,
• Midday is dominated by Grishma Rutu,
• Last part of day is under influence of Pravrit Rutu,
• First part of night is dominated by Varsha Rutu,
• Midnight is dominated by Sarad Rutu
•
• Early morning i.e Brahmi Muhurta is dominated by Hemanta Rutu
where the Bala is highest.
• So it is always better to get up in a time when the Bala is
• Uttama than in Vasanta Rutu dominated time, where Kapha Prakopa
is seen
CONTD..
• YOGARATNAKAR AND BHAVAPRAKASHA
• To maintain the health, the healthy individual should get up at
Brahmi Muhurta (2 hours before sunrise) and also stresses the
importance of remembering god after getting up at Brahmi Muhurta.
• BHAGVAT GEETA
• A person whose Aharavihara is correct, whose activities and life
style is perfect and who sleeps and gets up perfectly will be free
from all miseries
• GARGA SAMHITA
• One should rise at Brahma muhurta, chant the holy names of Lord
Krishna and Lord Balarama, and bow down before one's guru. Only
then should one place his feet on the ground
CONTD..
• MODERN CONCEPT:
• At this time there is positive flow of energy and mental faculties are
at their highest. By rising at this time the body can synchronise with
the rhythm of sun.
• Vitamin E and vitamin D are found in abundant quantity in early
morning sun’s ultraviolet rays.
• The circadian rhythm have been studied in vast details by biologists
and physiologists and probably this period is associated with
hormonal changes conductive to blossoming of mind.
• Liberation of nascent oxygen which easily mixes with haemoglobin
forming oxyhaemoglobin and reaching to remote tissues
• ANCIENT TRADITIONS:
• Early Morning is considered as the best time to worship God. Early
morning is also known as "Braahma Mahurat" in the Hindu
Mythology.
• It is regarded that prayers made at this time reach directly to the
God. Early Morning Shloka (Verse) chant which also serves as the
first prayer of the day to the almighty.

AWAKENINGAWAKENING
EARLY IN THE MORNINGEARLY IN THE MORNING
• One desirous for long healthy life should get up in brahma muhurtha
• One should analyse about the digestion of the food taken previous
night and get up in the early morning
• Hemadri commenting on brahma muhurta considers it as just prior to
sunrise
• Usually during this time environment is clean without much of
pollutants, along with clean air, pleasant atmosphere, absence of
noise, the morning rays of sun is very benificial
• The logic and reasoning behind the value of this time is that the Sun
starts spreading its Sunlight and energy during this time.
• The rays of this light affect the human brain positively. These rays
are light-blue. (Called ” Neelalohitaha” ) Due to this the cells in
the brain get activated.
• The rest of nature is pleasant and peaceful during this time.
• The mind, as has been proved also by Western science, is a powerful
tool to awaken and spread electrical and magnetic charges. These
uplift the individual who performs meditation and penance during
this time.
SIGNIFICANCE OF BRAAHMI MUHURTHAM
sreenivasdesabhatla.wordpress.com
• Western experts have agreed that the Sun provides important
ingredients to earth such as electrical and magnetic charges which
charge the earth and its inhabitants with vital energy.
• It also provides much needed food for plants. And these plants
emanate oxygen which is vital for the sustenance of humankind.
• They have also agreed that rising early causes improved blood
circulation.
• The lungs are pumped with healthy and fresh air (our ancient
sages created the Yoga and pranayama thousands of years ago to
benefit from this).
• When you go for a walk in the early morning, your mind will be
working in ideal conditions and you find answers to your problems
since the brain is calm.
• In the night, the atmosphere gets re-charged and in the early
morning, the wind is charged with the beneficial rays of the Moon
and Stars. This wind is called ‘Veera vayu’ which is greatly
beneficial to us.
• Our minds are sharpened and inspired and our bodies are filled with
a new life-force.
• It is a little difficult to rise at 4.30 a.m., but if you can go to bed by 9
p.m. or 9.30 p.m., you can get up early.

EFFECT ON DOSHASEFFECT ON DOSHAS
Brahma Muhurta, it’s Time to Wake Up!
by Nithyananda Times on August 10,
2013 in Siddha & Ayurveda,
Vedic Renaissance
• During a given 24 hour period there are two time segments for
each dosha as follows:
• 6:am to 10:00 am – kapha
10:00 am to 2:00 pm – pitta
2:00 pm to 6:00 pm – vata
• 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm – kapha
10:00 pm to 2:00 am – pitta
2:00 am to 6:00 am – vata2:00 am to 6:00 am – vata
• Because of the time frames, the very first activity of the daily routine, i.e.
rising, should be done shortly before sunrise in the vataperiod.
• Vata is the principle of movement, so to wake up in this period ensures that
vata principle will be functioning to help in the elimination of wastes from
the body.
• It is also the quietest time of day. For this reason it is also the best period
for prayer and meditation.
• Waking up any later than sunrise imbalances the kapha dosha in the body.
• The effects of this dis-balance can be observed physically as an increased
tendency to get upper respiratory disorders, constipation or incomplete
elimination of wastes from the intestines , general lethargy and fatigue.

Indian J Physiol Pharmacol 2012; 56(4) : 337–344
• Fifty four normal healthy male volunteers, with ages ranging from 16-
22 years from a residential school were selected.
•
They were randomly allocated to two groups (Brahma-muhurtha and
control).
• They were assessed on day 1, day 10 and day 20 of the intervention,
using a digit letter substitution task and verbal and spatial memory
task.
• The Brahma-muhurtha group were asked to rise before 4:30 am in the
morning based on the traditional Indian astrological calculations,
• while the control group were allowed to wake up just before 7 am
which was their regular timing for waking..
• DIGIT-LETTER SUBSTITUTION TASK (DLST)DIGIT-LETTER SUBSTITUTION TASK (DLST)
• The digit-letter substitution task comprised of a worksheet on
which digits (1to 9) were arranged randomly in 12 rows and 8
columns (10). An instruction key for “letter-for-digit” substitution
was given at the top. Participants were required to make as many
letter-for-digit substitutions as possible in 90 seconds.
• VERBAL AND SPATIAL MEMORY TESTVERBAL AND SPATIAL MEMORY TEST
• The verbal and spatial memory tests (12) were conducted by
projecting the test material on a screen, allowing 10 sec. for each
slide. After the 10 slides were shown, a mathematical problem
(e.g., + 8 – 4 + 9 – 3 + 6 – 5 – 7 + 2) was projected. Immediately
after this, the subjects were asked to recall and write down within
60 sec.
• Brahma-muhurtha group after 20 days showed a significant
improvement in the net scores for digit letter substitution task
as well as scores for verbal and spatial memory tasks.
• The control group (which got up after sunrise) showed no change
in the digit-letter substitution task as well as scores for verbal and
spatial memory tasks.
• The present study suggests that rising early in the morning as
described in ancient Indian tradition influences the process of
attention and can improve the ability to recall.
MYMY CONCLUSIONCONCLUSION
• In present era busy schedule, stress, lack of
concentration towards personal hygiene, pollution,
adaptation of modern techniques
• All these act as etiological factors for diseases and reduce the life
span.
• For the primary prevention of the diseases, individual immunity,
adopting specific protective measures, improving personal hygiene
and social hygiene are the means.
• By following Dinacharya most of these objectives are fulfilled and
hence by maintaining it not only brings disease free individual but
also disease free society
• Regular practice of it will prevent many today’s lifestyle problems.
• So ………
• One should get up early in the morning before sunrise
• Early Morning is considered as the best time to worship God and
getting knowledge, to start the day with this sincere prayer

  • 4. AIM OF THE ARTICLEAIM OF THE ARTICLE Understanding and critical evaluation of the statement “ Brahme Muhurte Uttishtet Swastho Rakshartham Ayushayah”
  • 5. AUTHOR LANGUAGE STYLE AND EXPRESSIONAUTHOR LANGUAGE STYLE AND EXPRESSION Very simple, Easily understandable language Gramatically correct, straight to point Has systematically arranged the information under proper headings
  • 7. • In present era we hardly live for 65 years with plenty of diseases right from the 1st decade of life • But our ancestors had sufficient time to follow the regimen (Dinacharya) whatever described in text. Hence they used to live even beyond 100 years • The reason for this may be busy schedule, stress, lack of concentration towards personal hygiene, pollution, adaptation of modern techniques etc.
  • 8. • By following Dinacharya most of these objectives are fulfilled and hence by maintaining it not only brings disease free individual but also disease free society • Brahme Muhurte Uttishtet is one among the Ayurvedic theories explained in Dinacharya concept which has been attributed as prevention of health of a healthy person • Every person in this world must have heard the famous saying of Benjamin Franklin that “ Early to bed early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”
  • 11. • ‘Braahmi’ in Sanskrit means Saraswathi, the Goddess of knowledge and intellect. This is thus also a great time for acquiring knowledge and intelligence.
  • 13. • Muhurta is a Hindu unit of measurement for time in the Hindu calendar • A Muhurta equals 2 Ghadiyas or 48 minutes. • Thirty Muhurtas constitute a day and night. • 30×48 1440˭ • 24×60 1440˭
  • 14. • Brahma means knowledge. The times opt for perceiving knowledge is known as Brahma muhurta. • Brahmi Muhurte Uttishtet (auspicious time for getting up from the • bed) for Swastha acquiring health and longevity • The last Yama of the Ratri (Night) is said to be Brahma muhurta
  • 16. • Brahma muhurta starts 96 minutes before sunrise. • Brahma muhurta ends 48 minutes before sunrise. • From 04:24:00 AM to 05:11:59 AM is Brahma muhurta • (If Sunrise is taken at 6 AM).
  • 17. WHY ONE SHOULD GET UP IN BRAHMI MUHURTA?
  • 18. • Which means Health is got from the sun, so one should get up early in the morning before sunrise which supports the Brahme Muhurte Uttishtet
  • 19. • A person who is interested in avoiding diseases, who is determined • to protect his life should get up in Brahmamuhurta • To avoid Vyadhis and Alakshmi (poverty) • But a person with diseases should sleep for maintaining the Dhatusamyata CONTD.. ASTANGA SANGRAHA:
  • 20. • SUSRUTA SAMHITA: • RUTUS IN DINACHARYA • Begining of the day resembles Vasanta Rutu, • Midday is dominated by Grishma Rutu, • Last part of day is under influence of Pravrit Rutu, • First part of night is dominated by Varsha Rutu, • Midnight is dominated by Sarad Rutu • • Early morning i.e Brahmi Muhurta is dominated by Hemanta Rutu where the Bala is highest. • So it is always better to get up in a time when the Bala is • Uttama than in Vasanta Rutu dominated time, where Kapha Prakopa is seen CONTD..
  • 21. • YOGARATNAKAR AND BHAVAPRAKASHA • To maintain the health, the healthy individual should get up at Brahmi Muhurta (2 hours before sunrise) and also stresses the importance of remembering god after getting up at Brahmi Muhurta. • BHAGVAT GEETA • A person whose Aharavihara is correct, whose activities and life style is perfect and who sleeps and gets up perfectly will be free from all miseries • GARGA SAMHITA • One should rise at Brahma muhurta, chant the holy names of Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama, and bow down before one's guru. Only then should one place his feet on the ground CONTD..
  • 22. • MODERN CONCEPT: • At this time there is positive flow of energy and mental faculties are at their highest. By rising at this time the body can synchronise with the rhythm of sun. • Vitamin E and vitamin D are found in abundant quantity in early morning sun’s ultraviolet rays. • The circadian rhythm have been studied in vast details by biologists and physiologists and probably this period is associated with hormonal changes conductive to blossoming of mind. • Liberation of nascent oxygen which easily mixes with haemoglobin forming oxyhaemoglobin and reaching to remote tissues
  • 23. • ANCIENT TRADITIONS: • Early Morning is considered as the best time to worship God. Early morning is also known as "Braahma Mahurat" in the Hindu Mythology. • It is regarded that prayers made at this time reach directly to the God. Early Morning Shloka (Verse) chant which also serves as the first prayer of the day to the almighty.
  • 24. 11STST SLOKASLOKA • IMMEDIETLY AFTER AWAKENINGIMMEDIETLY AFTER AWAKENING EARLY IN THE MORNINGEARLY IN THE MORNING
  • 25. • The front part of the hands (the finger tips) is credited to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. The middle part or palm is credited to Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of learning and the root /base(the part of hand near the wrist) to Gouri. • So, every morning, one should have a reverent look at one's hand which represents sincere labor
  • 27. • I bow to Mother Earth, who has mountains and jungles on her body and whose clothing is made by the ocean. • The wife of Lord Vishnu, please pardon me for touching you with my feet. • It is considered propitious to start the day with this sincere prayer.
  • 28. PRECAUTIONS WHILEPRECAUTIONS WHILE RISING INRISING IN BRAHMI MUHURTABRAHMI MUHURTA
  • 29. • Indications: • Before waking up in the morning, one should assure proper digestion of food taken during last night • The healthy individual should get up at Brahmi Muhurta to maintain his healthy life • Contraindications: • This regimen is not applicable for unhealthy persons, children, pregnant woman and aged persons
  • 31. • Nascent oxygen is singlet oxygen is exactly what body needs in order to neutralize toxic acids (gastrointestinal, respiratory and • metabolic acids). • • Increases energy levels by providing critical nascent oxygen • • Disorganizes bacteria, and yeast by providing an oxygen rich environment thus supports immune system. • • Allows oxygen and nutrients into the cell because of its electrical charge.
  • 32. • • Heightens concentration by providing nascent oxygen and ionic selenium to the brain, heart and kidneys. • • Enhances the absorption of vitamins, minerals, proteins and other important nutrients by keeping the intestinal villi clean and alkaline • Ozone necessary for the body which is adequately present in atmosphere during Brahmi Muhurta period • Brahmi Muhurta is an intermittant duration between respiration and photosynthesis of all plants. • The activities of entire world and especially of living beings are yet to be started, so the pollution is at its minimum
  • 34. •The regimen Brahmi Muhurta Uttishtet is wonderful concept gifted by Ayurveda to the whole world under the concept of Dinachariya. • The Dinachariya starts with getting up from sleep in Brahmi Muhurta. •A man wishing to be healthy throughout his life, he has to be healthy everyday as well. Health depends on how one spends each day. •Controlled and guided activities of body and mind are essential for •maintaining sound health. •If one should adopt the regimen of Brahmi Muhurta Utteshtet he can maintain his healthiness throughout the life and prevent the unhealthy conditions
  • 36. •Brahma muhurta starts 96 minutes before sunrise. • Brahma muhurta ends 48 minutes before sunrise. •From 04:24:00 AM to 05:11:59 AM is Brahma muhurta (If Sunrise is taken at 6 AM). •This regimen is applicable for healthy person for preservation of health and to get longevity.
  • 38. DAILY REGIMENDAILY REGIMEN • िदिने दिदिने दचर्या दर्या दिदिनचर्या दर्या • Arunadatta in his commentary gives the definition as the regimens done daily • He further elaborates that these regimens are performed to prolong lifespan • The daily regimens are indicated for the following reasons: • 1.Maintanence of hygiene- शुचिचर्ता द • 2.Brighten the indriyas- सुचप्रसन्नेिन्द्रियता द • 3.Strengthen the body- बल दला दभ • 4.Promote the health and longevity- आयुचषो दला दभ • 5.Keep the mind at peace and harmony- सोमनस्यता द
  • 39. AWAKENINGAWAKENING EARLY IN THE MORNINGEARLY IN THE MORNING • One desirous for long healthy life should get up in brahma muhurtha • One should analyse about the digestion of the food taken previous night and get up in the early morning • Hemadri commenting on brahma muhurta considers it as just prior to sunrise • Usually during this time environment is clean without much of pollutants, along with clean air, pleasant atmosphere, absence of noise, the morning rays of sun is very benificial
  • 40. • The logic and reasoning behind the value of this time is that the Sun starts spreading its Sunlight and energy during this time. • The rays of this light affect the human brain positively. These rays are light-blue. (Called ” Neelalohitaha” ) Due to this the cells in the brain get activated. • The rest of nature is pleasant and peaceful during this time. • The mind, as has been proved also by Western science, is a powerful tool to awaken and spread electrical and magnetic charges. These uplift the individual who performs meditation and penance during this time. SIGNIFICANCE OF BRAAHMI MUHURTHAM sreenivasdesabhatla.wordpress.com
  • 41. • Western experts have agreed that the Sun provides important ingredients to earth such as electrical and magnetic charges which charge the earth and its inhabitants with vital energy. • It also provides much needed food for plants. And these plants emanate oxygen which is vital for the sustenance of humankind. • They have also agreed that rising early causes improved blood circulation. • The lungs are pumped with healthy and fresh air (our ancient sages created the Yoga and pranayama thousands of years ago to benefit from this).
  • 42. • When you go for a walk in the early morning, your mind will be working in ideal conditions and you find answers to your problems since the brain is calm. • In the night, the atmosphere gets re-charged and in the early morning, the wind is charged with the beneficial rays of the Moon and Stars. This wind is called ‘Veera vayu’ which is greatly beneficial to us. • Our minds are sharpened and inspired and our bodies are filled with a new life-force. • It is a little difficult to rise at 4.30 a.m., but if you can go to bed by 9 p.m. or 9.30 p.m., you can get up early.
  • 43. WHAT ARE THE FACTORS TOWHAT ARE THE FACTORS TO BE FOLLOWED FOR GETTINGBE FOLLOWED FOR GETTING UP IN BRAHMA MUHURTHE?UP IN BRAHMA MUHURTHE?

  • 45. EFFECT ON DOSHASEFFECT ON DOSHAS Brahma Muhurta, it’s Time to Wake Up! by Nithyananda Times on August 10, 2013 in Siddha & Ayurveda, Vedic Renaissance
  • 46. • During a given 24 hour period there are two time segments for each dosha as follows: • 6:am to 10:00 am – kapha 10:00 am to 2:00 pm – pitta 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm – vata • 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm – kapha 10:00 pm to 2:00 am – pitta 2:00 am to 6:00 am – vata2:00 am to 6:00 am – vata
  • 47. • Because of the time frames, the very first activity of the daily routine, i.e. rising, should be done shortly before sunrise in the vataperiod. • Vata is the principle of movement, so to wake up in this period ensures that vata principle will be functioning to help in the elimination of wastes from the body. • It is also the quietest time of day. For this reason it is also the best period for prayer and meditation. • Waking up any later than sunrise imbalances the kapha dosha in the body. • The effects of this dis-balance can be observed physically as an increased tendency to get upper respiratory disorders, constipation or incomplete elimination of wastes from the intestines , general lethargy and fatigue.

Indian J Physiol Pharmacol 2012; 56(4) : 337–344
  • 51. • Fifty four normal healthy male volunteers, with ages ranging from 16- 22 years from a residential school were selected. • They were randomly allocated to two groups (Brahma-muhurtha and control). • They were assessed on day 1, day 10 and day 20 of the intervention, using a digit letter substitution task and verbal and spatial memory task. • The Brahma-muhurtha group were asked to rise before 4:30 am in the morning based on the traditional Indian astrological calculations, • while the control group were allowed to wake up just before 7 am which was their regular timing for waking..
  • 52. • DIGIT-LETTER SUBSTITUTION TASK (DLST)DIGIT-LETTER SUBSTITUTION TASK (DLST) • The digit-letter substitution task comprised of a worksheet on which digits (1to 9) were arranged randomly in 12 rows and 8 columns (10). An instruction key for “letter-for-digit” substitution was given at the top. Participants were required to make as many letter-for-digit substitutions as possible in 90 seconds. • VERBAL AND SPATIAL MEMORY TESTVERBAL AND SPATIAL MEMORY TEST • The verbal and spatial memory tests (12) were conducted by projecting the test material on a screen, allowing 10 sec. for each slide. After the 10 slides were shown, a mathematical problem (e.g., + 8 – 4 + 9 – 3 + 6 – 5 – 7 + 2) was projected. Immediately after this, the subjects were asked to recall and write down within 60 sec.
  • 53. • Brahma-muhurtha group after 20 days showed a significant improvement in the net scores for digit letter substitution task as well as scores for verbal and spatial memory tasks. • The control group (which got up after sunrise) showed no change in the digit-letter substitution task as well as scores for verbal and spatial memory tasks. • The present study suggests that rising early in the morning as described in ancient Indian tradition influences the process of attention and can improve the ability to recall.
  • 55. • In present era busy schedule, stress, lack of concentration towards personal hygiene, pollution, adaptation of modern techniques
  • 56. • All these act as etiological factors for diseases and reduce the life span. • For the primary prevention of the diseases, individual immunity, adopting specific protective measures, improving personal hygiene and social hygiene are the means. • By following Dinacharya most of these objectives are fulfilled and hence by maintaining it not only brings disease free individual but also disease free society • Regular practice of it will prevent many today’s lifestyle problems.
  • 57. • So ……… • One should get up early in the morning before sunrise • Early Morning is considered as the best time to worship God and getting knowledge, to start the day with this sincere prayer
