• List ways of maintaining good personal
hygiene

In addition, schoolchildren ages 10 to 12 will be
able to:
• Recognize their own bad habits and resolve to
change them
• Maintain good personal hygiene and good
grooming
• Assist younger children in developing good
hygiene habits
5. Many common infections are spread from one
person to another because of poor hygiene.
• Germs enter the body if
you eat with dirty hands.
• Germs and worm eggs hide
in the dirt under the
fingernails.
• Worms can enter the skin if
you walk barefoot on dirty
soil.
6. Many common infections are spread from one
person to another because of poor hygiene.
• Germs are released to the
air when you cough and
these can be inhaled by
others.
7. Your level of personal hygiene tells others about
the kind of person you are.
• When you come to school
with clean clothes, neat
hair, and a washed body,
your teachers and
classmates see that you
have self discipline and are
able to take care of
yourself.
8. Your level of personal hygiene tells others about
the kind of person you are.
• If you cover your mouth
when sneezing, other
children see that you give
importance to their health
as much as your own.
• Good grooming makes you
more popular with peers.
10. Children should be able to demonstrate the
following skills:
• proper handwashing
• daily bathing
• keeping hair clean and neat
• wearing clean clothes
• wearing shoes or slippers
• brushing teeth
• trimming long fingernails
11. Children should be able to demonstrate the
following skills:

utensils
12. 1. PROPER HANDWASHING
• Handwashing is the
single most important
way of preventing the
spread of germs.
• It is one of the most
important healthy
habits that children
should learn.
13. ACTIVITY: DIRTY HANDS
• Fill a box with wet sand or
glitters.
• Ask one child to dip a
hand in the box and make
sure the hand is covered
with sand or glitters.
• Have the child shake
hands with several
classmates.
14. ACTIVITY: DIRTY HANDS
After the demonstration,
you can have a classroom
discussion on the following
key questions:
1. What happened when
you shook hands?
2. What should you do to
stop germs from
transferring from one
person to another?
15. ACTIVITY: CLEAN HANDS
• Ask the children to trace
their hand on a piece of
paper.
• On each finger, have them
write down a situation
where it is important that
they wash their hands.
• Encourage them to make
colorful pictures.
16. DEMONSTRATION
• Choose a song (that’s about 20 seconds
long, like “Happy Birthday” or “ABC” or a
fun song in your native language) that they
can sing while washing.
• After you have demonstrated proper
handwashing, let the children do it by
themselves.
17.
18. KEY POINTS
1. Why is it important to wash your hands?
2. When should you wash your hands?
3. How long should you wash your hands?

dead skin as well as dirt
that might have
accumulated in the skin.
• It also refreshes the
person by cooling the
skin.

When taking a bath:
1. Wash your hair with mild
shampoo.
2. Wash your face with a mild
soap gently massaged with
the fingers or a clean piece of

brushing and combing are
important to keep hair
and scalp healthy, and to
prevent infestation with
lice or fleas.

To maintain clean and
well-groomed hair:
1. Shampoo your hair
everyday or every other
day depending on the
amount of dirt
accumulated in the hair.
2. Comb your hair neatly.
24. KEEPING HAIR CLEAN AND NEAT
To maintain clean and
well-groomed hair:
3. Inspect for presence of
lice or nits (eggs of lice).
4. Remove lice or nits with
a fine-toothed comb or
wash hair with special
shampoo.
25. To maintain clean and
well-groomed hair:
5. Keep a personal comb
and avoid borrowing
hair brushes or combs
from others.
KEEPING HAIR CLEAN AND NEAT

underwear are attractive
homes for bacteria that
cause bad smell and even
illness.
• Always wear clean
underwear to school and
change before bedtime.
27. 5. WEARING SHOES OR SLIPPERS

protect your feet against
infections by worms and
germs, and cuts caused by
sharp objects on the
ground.
• Foot protection is
especially important when
playing games or sports.

• Teaching children the
importance of good oral
hygiene will help prevent
oral diseases now and in
adulthood.
• It is important to keep the
mouth healthy.

their mouth and look at
their tongue. Check for
sores or swelling.

lower jaw. How many
teeth do they have? Are
there gaps? Do they see
cavities?
32. SELF-INSPECTION:
MIRROR, MIRROR
5. Show them how to use
the tongue depressor to
push out the cheeks from
the inside, so they can get
a better look at their gums
and teeth.

demonstrate the following
skills:
• Proper tooth brushing
• Flossing
• Identifying foods that are
good and bad for the

some water and some sand
or glitter.

tie with a string.
• Pretend that you are
sneezing or coughing then
release air slowly from one
of the bags.

• Cover the opening of the
plastic bag with a tissue or
handkerchief. Show how
the tissue or handkerchief
was able to catch the water
and sand or glitter.
45. KEY QUESTIONS
• What happens when you
don't cover your mouth
when you cough or sneeze?
• Why is it important to
cover your mouth when
you cough or sneeze?

into tissue, dispose of the
tissue properly and wash
your hands afterwards.
