24. 24
PRODUCTION PROCESSES
There are mainly two different processes for refining edible oils and
oil refining fats: physical and chemical. The selection of oil refining
process depends on the type and quality of crude oil to be
processed. Oil refineries are large scale plants, processing about a
hundred thousand to several hundred thousand barrels of crude oil
a day. In many ways, oil refining process utilizes much of the
technology of, and can be thought of as types of chemical plants. The
crude oil feedstock has typically been processed by an oil
production plant.
25. 25
1. DEGUMMING & NEUTRALIZATION
Degumming is the process of removal of gum from crude oil, in
which they are dissolved. There are two types of gums; hydra table and
non-hydra table gums can be removed from oil by hot water treatment.
Oil contains non-hydra table gums required to give phosphoric acid
treatment for removal of gums.
Neutralization is intended mainly for DE acidifyingcrudefatty oils or
degummed oils. By treatment of the oil with alkali (normally caustic lye)the
alkali will neutralizethe free fatty acids contained in the oil and from soap
stock. The soap stock is heavier than oil and can be removed from the oil by
centrifugalseparation. Raw oil is neutralized in short mix plantand controlled
the processparameters. Most often the crudeoil is pretreated with acid for
removalof gums.
2. BLEACHING &FILTERATION
Purposeof the bleaching process is the complete or partial removalof
the of color bodies (pigments) from the oil. The pigmentscan be destroyed
through chemical attack by oxidizingagents. The color of the neutralized oil is
improved by treating the oil with bleaching earth or a mixture of bleaching
earth and carbon that absorbs the coloring substance dissolved in oil.
The filtration takes place in two alternatively operatingpressureleaf
filters, where the bleaching earth is completely removed from the oil. While
one filter is in operation the other filter is blow with steam order to remove
residualoil in the bleaching earth. After filtration, oil is passed through oneof
the alternatively workingpolish filters before going to the deodorization.
26. 26
3. DEODORIZATION
Deodorization isprimarily a high temperature, high vacuum, steam
distillation process. Alfalevel continuousdeodorizer isbased on the latest
ensuresthat air does notbubble through oil in the eventof leakage. The hot
oil is entersthe deodorizer and flowscontinuously under vacuumthrougha
number of trays via specially designed over flow channels. As the oil
progressesthrough deodorizer, fatty acids, aldehydes, ketenes and other
unwanted materialsare vaporized and carried outwith the strippingsteam.
PHYSICALREFINING
In recent years, there is a developmentof new technology, which is
not utilize any chemical at neutralization of oil for removingof various
impuritiesfrom the oil, after suitable per-treatmentto the oil refiningis done
by usingphysical methods of separation. Physical refiningis processin which
oil are refined usingsteam and physicalmethods of separation. This
technology is mostly usefulfor high FFA oils like palm oil, coconutoil etc.
