The Pueblo lived in the Southwest region of North
America. Their homes were called pueblos which
were made of adobe (clay and straw baked into
bricks).

Woodland region of North America. Their homes were called
wigwams which were made of bark.

North America. Their homes were called igloos which
were made of blocks of ice and snow.

North America. Their homes were called chickees which
were made of palmetto thatch over a cypress log frame.

12. What Did Native Americans Eat?
• Plains tribes hunted buffalo and other game such as elk and antelope.
•Inuit tribes hunted sea mammals such as walrus and seal.
•California tribes ground acorns into flour. They also ate rats, snakes,
grasshoppers, lizards, grubs, and roots.
• Northwest Coastal tribes could catch enough fish during the summer
salmon run to feed them for the whole winter.
•Seminole tribes gardened and gathered food. Blowguns were used to
hunt. All parts of the palmetto palm tree were used for food.
•Algonquin and the Great Lake tribes were mainly hunters. They tapped maple
trees for sap to make sugar. They also ate lobsters, oysters, mussels, clams, and
other shellfish.

Sequoyah – Cherokee Tribe:
Invented a system to write the spoken Cherokee language.
Pocahontas – Powhatan:
A Virginia Native American known for her association with the
colonial settlement at Jamestown.
Sitting Bull – Sioux Tribe:
Led his people as a tribal chief during the years of resistance to the
United States government and their policies.
Osceola – Creek/Seminole Tribe:
A Medicine man and War Chief of the Seminoles during the Indian
Removal from Florida to the U.S. Territory of Oklahoma during the
early 1800’s.
14. Artifacts
The Navajo made paintings from SAND to help cure the
sick.
The Algonquians made DREAM CATCHERS to help their
children have good dreams.
The Eastern Woodland tribes made RATTLES from
TURTLE SHELLS and filled them with herbs for curing the
sick.
The Northwest Coastal Indians built tall TOTEM POLES
and placed them in front of their homes.

The Pueblo Indians made dolls of their gods called KACHINAS and
gave them to the children to play with so they would not be afraid of
the gods during ceremonies.
The Inuit made carvings from WHALE BONES.
The Plains Indians made just about everything from BUFFALO HIDE .
The Plains Indians were the only group to wear WAR BONNETS.
The chief wore this when he went into battle.
The Northwest Indians made containers from BIRCHBARK.
