DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ANGINAAND A HEART- ATTACK
The heart is a strong muscular pump. The heart pumps blood to
nourish all parts of the body, including itself. It is responsible
for pumping about 3,000 gallons of blood throughout the body
every day. Like other muscles in the body, the heart itself needs
to receive a good supply of blood at all times to function
properly.The blood that nourishes the heart muscle flows
through the coronary arteries.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when the arteries that
supply blood to the heart muscle (the coronary arteries)
become hardened and narrowed due to build up of plaque on
their inner walls, which is known as atherosclerosis. Some
hardening of the arteries occurs normally as a person grows
older. Plaque build up in the arteries, which is made up of fat,
cholesterol, calcium, and other substances from the blood,
often begins in childhood. Over time, plaque buildup in the
coronary arteries can:
Narrow the arteries - reducing the amount of blood
and oxygen that reaches the heart muscle
Completely block the arteries - stopping the flow of
blood to the heart muscle
Cause blood clots to form - blocking the arteries
that supply blood to the heart muscle
As the plaque increases in size, the insides of the coronary
arteries get narrower and less blood can flow through them.
Eventually, blood flow to the heart muscle is reduced, and,
because blood carries much-needed oxygen, the heart muscle is

cutoff blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart muscle can

SYMPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK /
STROKE
Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the
center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes; Pain
spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms. The arm may be
tingling or numb. The pain may be mild to intense. It may feel
like pressure, tightness, burning, or heavy weight. It may be
located in the chest, upper abdomen, neck, jaw, or inside the
arms or shoulders. (Diabetic patients may not experience any
pain at all.) Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting,
profuse sweating, nausea or shortness of breath, dizziness and
weakness, anxiety, nervousness and/or cold, sweaty skin,
paleness or pallor, increased or irregular heart beating, feeling
of impending doom, feeling of indigestion, sudden numbness
or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of
the body, sudden confusion, trouble in speaking or
understanding, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes,
sudden trouble walking, loss of balance or coordination, severe
headache with no known cause.

Angina is a warning symptom of heart disease – but it is not a
heart attack. The symptoms of a heart attack (also called
myocardial infarction or "MI") are similar to angina.
EJECTION FRACTION (EF%):
Blockage of arteries starts from the very young age. Even a 10
years old child will have blocked arteries. Whatever the
percentage of blockage one might have, the important factor is
the ejection fraction.
An ejection fraction is the percentage of blood pumped out of a
heart chamber during the contraction phase of each heartbeat
(systole). The term typically refers to a measurement of the left
ventricle (the lower left chamber of the heart), which pumps
oxygen-rich blood out to the body through the aorta. An
ejection fraction can also be measured in the right ventricle (the
lower right chamber), which pumps blood returning from the
body to the lungs for oxygen. However, this measurement is
nearly always referred to as a right ventricular ejection fraction.
An EF above 50 percent indicates that your heart is pumping
normally and able to deliver an adequate supply of blood to
your body and brain. An EF that falls below 50 percent could
indicate that the heart is no longer pumping efficiently and not
able to meet the body's needs. An EF of 35 percent or less
indicates a weakened heart muscle and that the heart is
pumping poorly, which can significantly increase a person's
risk for Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).
CAUSES
1. Free radicals: The process of manufacture of margarine
involves heating oil to very high temperatures. That high
temperature makes the oils to convert into free radicals in
the form of hydrogenated fats.
2. Cholesterol: The bulk of cholesterol in the body is manu
factured by the body, and not taken into the body as part of
the diet.
TREATMENTS AVAILABLE FOR CAD:
Treatment options currently available for the management of
Myocardial Infarction (MI) include both pharmacological
therapy as well as surgical treatment.
BYPASS SURGERY: As the name states, it is nothing but
bypassing the problem to improve the blood circulation. By
cutting the blocked portion of the arteries, take out some artery
from elsewhere of the body and graft. The blocked portion of
the artery remains there as it was. How many grafting one can
do? There is limitation. Besides, a bypass surgery would cost
anywhere between Rs. 2 and Rs. 4 lakhs.
ANGIOPLASTY BALLOONING: The process of opening
the blocked portion with external pressure with the help of a
die, it costs from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 85,000.
STENT SURGERY: Stent is a small spring which is inserted
at the blockage and clears the artery for blood circulation. The
surgery would cost from Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 55,000
CHELATION THERAPY: Chelation therapy is injecting
certain chemical into the blood which clears the blockage.
However, if sufficient care is not taken it has undesired side
effects that damage the kidney. Chelation Therapy would cost
from Rs. 45,000.00 to Rs. 60,000.
EECP: When one artery gets blocked, a new artery opens of its
own which is called as collateral artery. Enhanced External
Counter Pulsation (EECP) is a therapy in which external
pressure is applied on blood vessels to open the collateral
arteries and improve the ejection fraction. One may have to
take 25 to 30 sittings and it will cost Rs.80,000 to Rs.90,000.
NO PERMANENT SOLUTIONS
But, all the above remedies are temporary and they can’t
guarantee against re-clogging of arteries. The problem with
surgical procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting
(CABG) or angioplasty is that these therapies are localized,
invasive and do not address the root cause of the disorder but
only offer palliative treatment. Angioplasty offers only tempo-
rary relief in the form of dilatation of the coronary arteries as
re-stenosis can occur after a few months in some patients.
Concomitant use of drugs such as anti-platelet agents,
beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors are necessary to prevent
another attack. However, these drugs have adverse side effects.
Cough is one of the most common side effects for ACE inhibi-
tors while beta-blockers have an unfavorable effect on the lipid
profile. However these therapies for Myocardial Infarction
have not proven to be sufficient enough in arresting the
progress of the underlying disease.

native and diuretic properties and prescribed as a sedative and
tonic, this fatty oil from seeds is used in many medicinal prepa-
rations as an antispasmodic and nerve stimulant.
3. Tribulus Terrestis - Considered as a miracle herb in India
and used as a physical rejuvenation tonic, this herb is used in
the treatment of urinary disorders, kidney diseases and gravel
diseases of the genito-urinary system, calculus affections, gout
besides diseases of the heart, and many other conditions.
4. Punica Granatum - Clinical research has proved pomegran-
ate juice to decrease LDL ("bad cholesterol") and increased
HDL ("good cholesterol") by 20% in humans. The oxidation
of LDL, which is believed by many researchers to be a major
cause of heart disease, was reduced by up to 90%.
5. Vitis Venifera - It enhances capillary strength and vascular
function which helps the heart and decreases PMS problems,
bruising, edema from injury or trauma varicose veins, leg
swelling and retinopathy, enhanced immune resistance,
increased peripheral circulation, improved vision, reduced
adverse allergic and inflammatory response, reduction in skin
aging and loss of elasticity.
6. Piper Longum - It induces alterations in membrane
dynamics and permeation characteristics along with induction
in synthesis of proteins associated with cytoskeletal function
resulting in an increase in small intestine absorptive surface,
assisting efficient permeation through the epithelial barrier.
7. Adhathoda Vasica - The active alkaloid vasicine and its auto
oxidation product vasicinone have shown broncho-dilator and
anti-histaminic effects. Uterine stimulant activity and
moderate hypotensive activity of the alkaloids were reported.
Thrombopoeitic activity of vasicine has been observed.
8. Cinnamomum Cassia - Cinnamon is warm and cordial to
the stomach, carminative and distinctly astringent. When given
in powder or infusion, it allays nausea, checks vomiting, and
relieves flatulence.
9. Thriphala - A laxative, alterative, anti-inflammatory,
carminative, expectorant, anti oxidant and anti microbial, it is
useful for digestion, lungs, skin, eyes and weight management.
10. Tenospora Cordifolia - Used in general debility, dyspepsia,
fevers and urinary diseases, the drug shows anti-periodic,
anti-spasmodic anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic plant is
used in Ayurveda rasayanas to improve the immune system and
the body’s resistance to infections. It is used as
immune-modulator in immune-suppression of obstructive
jaundice, fibrosis, peritonitis and sepsis.
11. Bacopa Monneri - It improves mental stability, alertness,
calmness, good for insomnia, depression, sleep related
troubles, low and high blood pressures, high and intermittent
fevers, menstrual disorders. It is one of the powerful
anti-oxidant herb widely used in Ayurveda for rejuvenation.
