Spiritual Things
• NAU 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning
spiritual [4152 πνευματικός pneumatikos] gifts,
brethren, I do not want you to be unaware.
• YLT …the spiritual things…
• In verse 2 Paul addresses the “spiritual things”
starting with idolatry, and then in verse 3
“confessions”. In verse 4 he mentions “gifts”

1 Corinthians 12, Spiritual Gifts
• Most commentators try to make a huge distinction
between spiritual gifts and “natural” skills, abilities,
or talents.
• NAU 1 Corinthians 4:7 …What do you have that you
did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you
boast as if you had not received it?
• NAU John 3:27 John [the baptist] answered and said, "A

can do, that is not a gift from God;
• NKJ Acts 17:28 "for in Him we live and move
and have our being…
• It's as though we lived in a fishbowl and
everything is provided by our Master.
• Everything is a gift from God!
• Why do we boast? Boast in Him!

A Study Of The Gifts Of God Begins
In The OT
• NAU Exodus 28:3 "You shall speak to all the
skillful persons whom I have endowed with the
spirit of wisdom, that they make Aaron's
garments to consecrate him, that he may
minister as priest to Me.
• NAU 2 Chronicles 2:12 …"Blessed be the
LORD, the God of Israel, …who has given King
David a wise son, endowed with discretion and
understanding…

A Study Of The Gifts Of God Begins
In The OT
• NAU Exodus 35:30 Then Moses said …the LORD has
called by name Bezalel… 31 "And He has filled him with
the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding and in
knowledge and in all craftsmanship; 32 to make designs
for working in gold and in silver and in bronze, 33 and in
the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of
wood… 34 "He also has put in his heart to teach… 35 "He
has filled them with skill to perform every work of an
engraver and of a designer and of an embroiderer,… and
of a weaver, as performers of every work and makers of
designs.
• No one claims these gifts today (you can't fake them).

4 Periods of Miracles
Each About 80 Years
• We tend to think that human history and the Bible are
full of miracles. However, God restricted most of His use
of class one miracles to 4 narrow periods of time in
human history, always to the Jews, to authenticate His
spokesman, warn about coming judgment, and provide
deliverance. Every time was a major transition time for
Israel (very Jewish). 1 Corinthians 1:22 For indeed Jews
ask for signs…
• Moses and Joshua
• Elijah and Elisha
• Daniel
• Jesus and the 12 Apostles
1 Corinthians 12:3
Is this to be taken literally?
• NAU 1 Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I make known to you that
no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is
accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the
Holy Spirit.
• Yes! When they are “speaking by the Spirit of God”. Judas
wasn’t, false teachers aren’t, and obviously Jesus spoke about
many who will say, “on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not
prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons,
and in Your name perform many miracles?’ "And then I will
declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU
WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’ (Matt 7:22-23) (John 6:44, 8:24).
• However, even non-believers will be forced to admit He’s
Lord eventually (Phil. 2:9-11, Zechariah 12:10). 12
1 Corinthians 12:4

“Signs of an apostle”
• Why did God give these miraculous signs
before the New Testament was completed?
• NAU 2 Corinthians 12:12 The signs of a true
apostle were performed among you with all
perseverance, by signs and wonders and
miracles.
• NAU Acts 5:12 At the hands of the apostles
many signs and wonders were taking place…
“Signs of an apostle”
• Paul does not list the signs of a false apostle, but
you can see them on TV now.
• Spiritual con men do miracles; NAU 2
Thessalonians 2:9 that is, the one whose coming is
in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power

wicked generation; it seeks for a sign…
• Some of the very great men in history, who were
mightily used by God, did not do any miracles;
25
All Miracles Are Not A Blessing
And Signs, Wonders, And Miracles Ceased
• Not everyone who asked experienced healing and
miraculous deliverance. Steven was murdered Acts 7,
believers suffered at the hands of Saul (8:1–3); James
was decapitated by Herod Agrippa (12:2); Paul was
stoned in (14:19), he suffered whipping, beatings, and
imprisonment, and extreme perils (2 Cor. 11:24–33).
These signs, wonders, and miracles were transitional,
temporary, and are not normative now. Church history
records that these signs of an apostle passed away with
the apostles. Even in the book of Acts they are fading
and the last one third of the book from chapter 22 to
the end (about one third of the text) have only 2 or 3 of
these miraculous events recorded.

1 Cor 12:9, Tongues: The Final Word …
Got Better, Not “Lesser” BY BUD AHLHEIM
• http://pulpitandpen.org/2017/02/16/tongues-the-final-word-got-better-not-lesser/
• pulpitandpen.org wrote, “For believers who are part of the glorious, contemporary revival of Reformed theology
spreading across the globe, the pillar of sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone – is a well-known feature revived during the
16th-century Protestant Reformation. We recognize that Scripture is THE sole rule for our Christian faith and life. It is
the infallible and inerrant authority. It is completely sufficient.
• Implicit in sola Scriptura is the concept of tota Scriptura. The entirety of Scripture as the whole counsel of God must be
embraced, comprehended, and obeyed by the believer. We cannot selectively excerpt from the Holy Writ those
portions we deem personally acceptable upon which to build the framework for our understanding of God, of ourselves
and our faith. The fullness of Scripture must be our source. Favored passages and teachings from Scripture we find
soothing to our souls and easily digested by our understanding must be reconciled – as they can be – with the more
difficult, and often seemingly abrasive, instruction from the Word that can be hard to swallow. Sola Scriptura necessarily
means tota Scripture. We must not miss anything, avoid anything, or omit anything … nor should we want to.
• A third ‘Scriptura” concept reborn in the Reformation is analogia Scriptura. The analogy of Scripture does not imply that
the Word itself is an analogy to something external to it. Rather the phrase reveals the inherent characteristic of
doctrinal consistency within the Word that must drive our study. Scripture must be compared with Scripture. God’s
Word does not contradict itself. Thus, if we arrive at an understanding of a particular text’s meaning from one portion of
Scripture, that understanding will rightly always correspond with the same, perhaps more fully illumined, meaning from
another portion of Scripture.
• We do not have to cast our gaze too far within modern evangelicalism to find these “Scripturas” being decimated by
pulpits, demeaned to oblivion within pews, and disregarded in Sunday School rooms. The old standby phrase of any
good Southern Baptist was once “Chapter and verse, please” when confronted with a Biblically-spurious notion. That
laudable knee-jerk reaction for the authority and sufficiency of Scripture has all but disappeared to be replaced by the

Healings, Tongues
• pulpitandpen.org wrote, “…It is noteworthy, then, that among the
instruction James gives – writing in the middle of the first century – to
believers is guidance on what to do for someone who is sick in the
church. If someone is sick, what are they to do? Are they to call for
an apostle who could assuredly lay hands on and heal them? Or, are
they to seek another believer supernaturally imbued with the gift of
healing?
• James gives neither of these answers. Instead, his guidance – again,
given smack-dab in the middle of the 1st-century – is the same advice
for the church today … “Let him call for the elders of the church, and
let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the
Lord.” (James 5:14) No calling for an healing-capable apostle. No
summoning the believer with the gift of healing. Instead, the sick
were to call for their elders to provide prayerful support,
encouragement, and strength. …The gift of healing was 28
1 Corinthians 12:9
Healings, Tongues
• certainly operable at the time James was writing. …why didn’t James
just remind his readers of this presumed Christ-granted ability?
…the reason that James might not have given this advice is the
implicit evidence within the New Testament that these “signs and
wonders” gifts were purpose-specific (authentication of the apostles,
proclamation of the Gospel, and edification of the saints) and
temporary. Outside of Acts, their presence in the New Testament is
as obscure as their prevalence is in modern charismatic marketing.
But, again, it’s important to note that James’ instruction was merely
a decade and a half or so after Pentecost. And, also notably absent
in James’ guidance for godly living is the “gift of tongues.” (His
reference to the “tongue” in James 3:5-11 speaks to the virtue and
vice of the untamable, physical tongue, not to to the supernatural
“gift.”)…”

1 Corinthians 12:13, When / How do
we receive the Holy Spirit?
• gotquestions.org “Answer: The apostle Paul clearly taught that
we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we receive Jesus Christ
as our Savior. First Corinthians 12:13 … Romans 8:9 … Ephesians
1:13-14 … These three passages make it clear that the Holy
Spirit is received at the moment of salvation. Paul could not say
that we all were baptized by one Spirit and all given one Spirit to
drink if not all of the Corinthian believers possessed the Holy
Spirit. Romans 8:9 is even stronger, stating that if a person does
not have the Spirit, he does not belong to Christ. Therefore, the
possession of the Spirit is an identifying factor of the possession
of salvation. Further, the Holy Spirit could not be the “seal of
salvation” (Ephesians 1:13-14) if He is not received at the
moment of
35
1 Corinthians 12:13, When / How do
we receive the Holy Spirit?
• salvation. Many scriptures make it abundantly clear that our
salvation is secured the moment we receive Christ as Savior.
• This discussion is controversial because the ministries of the Holy
Spirit are often confused. The receiving/indwelling of the Spirit
occurs at the moment of salvation. The filling of the Spirit is an
ongoing process in the Christian life. While we hold that the
baptism of the Spirit also occurs at the moment of salvation, some
Christians do not. This sometimes results in the baptism of the Spirit
being confused with “receiving the Spirit” as an act subsequent to
salvation.
• In conclusion, how do we receive the Holy Spirit? We receive the
Holy Spirit by simply receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior
(John 3:5-16). When do we receive the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit
becomes our permanent possession the moment we believe.” 36
1 Cor. 12:13, One True Church,
Mike Gendron
• “The True Church - It is made up of all who were born again (1 Cor. 12:13). Its
growth, doctrine and traditions were recorded in the New Testament. The
"true church" is the one which continues the teachings and traditions of the
first century church.
• Nowhere in the New Testament do we find the “one true church” doing any of
the following: praying to Mary and the saints, submitting to a pope, praying
for souls in purgatory, offering indulgences for the remission of sin, ordaining
a sacerdotal priesthood, offering a Eucharistic Christ on an altar or baptizing
infants.
• Jesus and His apostles warned us that His Church would have to fight against
false teachers. There are repeated contrasts between the teachings of false
teachers and the truth of God’s Word. Thus, the basis for determining truth
from error is not based upon WHO is teaching it, but whether it is recorded in
Scripture. Peter contended against false teachers by saying we have a "more
sure word" to depend upon (2 Peter 1:16-21). He was referring to the written,
inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God. Scripture is therefore the
determining factor as to which church is preaching the truth.”

1 Corinthians 12:14,30, Cessationist,
Cessationism, Question: "What is the gift of
speaking in tongues?” gotquestions.org
• Answer: The first occurrence of speaking in tongues occurred on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The apostles went
out and shared the gospel with the crowds, speaking to them in their own languages: "We hear them declaring the
wonders of God in our own tongues!" (Acts 2:11). The Greek word translated tongues literally means "languages."
Therefore, the gift of tongues is speaking in a language a person does not know in order to minister to someone who
does speak that language. In 1 Corinthians chapters 12"14, Paul discusses miraculous gifts, saying, "Now, brothers, if I
come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or
prophecy or word of instruction?" (1 Corinthians 14:6). According to the apostle Paul, and in agreement with the
tongues described in Acts, speaking in tongues is valuable to the one hearing God's message in his or her own language,
but it is useless to everyone else unless it is interpreted/translated.
• A person with the gift of interpreting tongues (1 Corinthians 12:30) could understand what a tongues-speaker was saying
even though he did not know the language that was being spoken. The tongues interpreter would then communicate the
message of the tongues speaker to everyone else, so all could understand. "For this reason anyone who speaks in a
tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says" (1 Corinthians 14:13). Paul's conclusion regarding tongues that
were not interpreted is powerful: "But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than
ten thousand words in a tongue" (1 Corinthians 14:19).
• Is the gift of tongues for today? First Corinthians 13:8 mentions the gift of tongues ceasing, although it connects the
ceasing with the arrival of the "perfect" in 1 Corinthians 13:10. Some point to a difference in the tense of the Greek
verbs referring to prophecy and knowledge "ceasing" and that of tongues "being ceased" as evidence for tongues
ceasing before the arrival of the "perfect." While possible, this is not explicitly clear from the text. Some also point to
passages such as Isaiah 28:11 and Joel 2:28-29 as evidence that speaking in tongues was a sign of God's oncoming
judgment. First Corinthians 14:22 describes tongues as a "sign to unbelievers." According to this argument, the gift of
tongues was a warning to the Jews that God was going to judge Israel for rejecting Jesus Christ as Messiah. Therefore,
when God did in fact judge Israel (with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70), the gift of tongues would
no longer serve its intended purpose. While this view is possible, the primary purpose of tongues being fulfilled does not
necessarily demand its cessation. Scripture does not conclusively assert that the gift of speaking in tongues has ceased.39

1 Corinthians 12:13, When / How do
we receive the Holy Spirit?
• gotquestions.org “Answer: The apostle Paul clearly taught that we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we receive
Jesus Christ as our Savior. First Corinthians 12:13 declares, “For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—
whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” Romans 8:9 tells us that if a
person does not possess the Holy Spirit, he or she does not belong to Christ: “You, however, are controlled not by
the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,
he does not belong to Christ.” Ephesians 1:13-14 teaches us that the Holy Spirit is the seal of salvation for all those
who believe: “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit
guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.”
• These three passages make it clear that the Holy Spirit is received at the moment of salvation. Paul could not say
that we all were baptized by one Spirit and all given one Spirit to drink if not all of the Corinthian believers
possessed the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 is even stronger, stating that if a person does not have the Spirit, he does not
belong to Christ. Therefore, the possession of the Spirit is an identifying factor of the possession of salvation.
Further, the Holy Spirit could not be the “seal of salvation” (Ephesians 1:13-14) if He is not received at the moment
of salvation. Many scriptures make it abundantly clear that our salvation is secured the moment we receive Christ
as Savior.
• This discussion is controversial because the ministries of the Holy Spirit are often confused. The
receiving/indwelling of the Spirit occurs at the moment of salvation. The filling of the Spirit is an ongoing process in
the Christian life. While we hold that the baptism of the Spirit also occurs at the moment of salvation, some
Christians do not. This sometimes results in the baptism of the Spirit being confused with “receiving the Spirit” as
an act subsequent to salvation.
• In conclusion, how do we receive the Holy Spirit? We receive the Holy Spirit by simply receiving the Lord Jesus
Christ as our Savior (John 3:5-16). When do we receive the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit becomes our permanent
possession the moment we believe.”

1 Corinthians 12:13, ”baptism" in
the Holy Spirit, by Compass GML
• When you answered the question about the Holy Spirit living in a person at the moment of
conversion, I agree. However, you did not go on to identify the additional "baptism" in the Holy
Spirit as given in the Acts of the Apostles. This is an important distinction and is an experience for
which all believers should seek.
• ANSWER:
• No, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not an additional experience. There is only one Spirit, God,
and when He comes into your life, all of Him comes in:
• For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body . . . we were all made to drink of one Spirit. —
1 Corinthians 12:13
• the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with him. —1 Corinthians 6:17
• There is one body and one Spirit . . . one hope . . . one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God . . . —
Ephesians 4:4-6
• The baptism of the Holy Spirit is what joins the believer to the body of Christ. If you could be saved
and not be baptized in the Spirit, you would be an out-of-the-body believer, which is impossible.
• When you study the Book of Acts, realize that communication in that day was primarily by word of
mouth and news traveled slowly to many parts of the world.
• Therefore you had the unique, one-time situation of having Jewish people who were saved by
faith prior to the cross and under the dispensation of Law (by faith—trusting their salvation to the

Messiah's payment for their sins and the new fact that God could now "indwell" them, they
had to be born again/ask Him to come into their life (the Holy Spirit won't come in uninvited).
• Therefore, for a few saved people who lived both before and after the cross, they needed to
ask the Holy Spirit to "indwell" them. These verses in Acts are referring to those people.
• and he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to
him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." And Paul said, "John
baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling people to believe in Him who was coming
after him, that is, Jesus." And when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the
Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them . . . —
Acts 19:2-6, See also Acts 18:24-26.
• Today, when someone is saved, the Holy Spirit comes into their life—all of Him. There is no
need to ask for a second or "additional" baptism. You'll never have more or less of God in you
for the rest of your life, regardless of what you do, or don't do.
• Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? —

1 Corinthians 12:1, Special / General Revelation
Revelation
• Question: "What is general revelation and special revelation?"
Answer: General revelation and special revelation are the two ways God has chosen to reveal Himself to humanity. General revelation refers to the general truths that can be known about
God through nature. Special revelation refers to the more specific truths that can be known about God through the supernatural.
In regard to general revelation, Psalm 19:1-4 declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after
night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” According to this
passage, God’s existence and power can be clearly seen through observing the universe. The order, intricacy, and wonder of creation speak to the existence of a powerful and glorious
Creator.
General revelation is also taught in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being
understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Like Psalm 19, Romans 1:20 teaches that God’s eternal power and divine nature are “clearly seen” and
“understood” from what has been made, and that there is no excuse for denying these facts. With these Scriptures in mind, perhaps a working definition of general revelation would be
“the revelation of God to all people, at all times, and in all places that proves that God exists and that He is intelligent, powerful, and transcendent.”
Special revelation is how God has chosen to reveal Himself through miraculous means. Special revelation includes physical appearances of God, dreams, visions, the written Word of God,
and most importantly—Jesus Christ. The Bible records God appearing in physical form many times (Genesis 3:8, 18:1; Exodus 3:1-4, 34:5-7), and the Bible records God speaking to people
through dreams (Genesis 28:12, 37:5; 1 Kings 3:5; Daniel 2) and visions (Genesis 15:1; Ezekiel 8:3-4; Daniel 7; 2 Corinthians 12:1-7).
Of primary importance in the revealing of God is His Word, the Bible, which is also a form of special revelation. God miraculously guided the authors of Scripture to correctly record His
message to mankind, while still using their own styles and personalities. The Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). The Word of God is inspired, profitable, and sufficient (2
Timothy 3:16-17). God determined to have the truth regarding Him recorded in written form because He knew the inaccuracy and unreliability of oral tradition. He also understood that the
dreams and visions of man can be misinterpreted. God decided to reveal everything that humanity needs to know about Him, what He expects, and what He has done for us in the Bible.
The ultimate form of special revelation is the Person of Jesus Christ. God became a human being (John 1:1, 14). Hebrews 1:1-3 summarizes it best, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers
through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son … The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his
being.” God became a human being, in the Person of Jesus Christ, to identify with us, to set an example for us, to teach us, to reveal Himself to us, and, most importantly, to provide
salvation for us by humbling Himself in death on the cross (Philippians 2:6-8). Jesus Christ is the ultimate “special revelation” from God.

• Jesus Is Lord
• Tuesday, June 17th, 2014Salvation
• Second Coming
• Q. Is 1 Corinthians 12:3 to be taken literally that no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy
Spirit?
• A. I believe during the Church Age 1 Cor. 12:3 should be taken literally. No one can sincerely say
“Jesus is Lord” except by the Spirit because only born again believers accept Jesus as their Lord. Non
believers don’t think He’s their Lord and in any case don’t want Him to be.
• But at the 2nd Coming, after everyone sees Him return in glory to take command of planet Earth,
even non-believers will be forced to admit He’s the Lord of the whole Earth (Phil. 2:9-11, Zech. 14:9)
even though they won’t have accepted Him as their Savior. This is why the people of Earth will
mourn when they see Him coming on the clouds with power and great glory (Matt. 24:30). They will
finally understand that He is who He has always claimed to be, and it will be too late for them to do
anything about it.

1 Corinthians 12:4, The Holy Spirit
• Dear Compass,
• Is there a verse in the Bible explicitly promising the gift of the Holy Spirit to those at the
"moment" they trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior and believe? Or does the Spirit come to
live in a believer at some later, undefined time after conversion?
•
ANSWER:
• The Holy Spirit comes to live permanently in a believer at the exact time of conversion.
• . . . if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. —Romans 8:9While
Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to
the message. —Acts 10:44
• And receiving the Holy Spirit is permanent.
• . . . the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. —
Ephesians 4:30I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Spirit), that He may
be with you forever. —John 14:16
• Remember, you are saved by grace, not by works.
• For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of
God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. —Ephesians 2:8-9
See also Romans 3:28 and Titus 3:5.So nothing you do can separate you from God.
• For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things
present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing,
will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans

• Mike's Comment: The pope has blasphemed the Holy Spirit by attributing the work of Christ
to the work of the devil. It is the Lord Jesus who divides believers from unbelievers by the
truth of His Word (Luke 12:51-53). Born-again Christians and Catholics will always be divided
on the essentials of the Gospel, how one is born again, how one is justified, how one is
purified of sin, who can mediate between God and man, and the efficacy, sufficiency and
necessity of Jesus Christ for salvation. Pope Francis is the one who is doing the work of the
devil by rebuilding the religious tower of Babel as he seeks to unite all Christians under the
papacy. Tragically, some evangelicals are jumping on his ecumenical bandwagon by denying
the exclusivity of God's Gospel. Read more of Mike's response in an interview with the

To help Christians to "to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ." So that "we are no longer...tossed here and there...by every wind of doctrine." They may be downloaded and modified free of charge. Matthew 10:8 …Freely you received, freely give.
  • 4. Paul uses “concerning” as a Divinely inspired outline NAU 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. 4
  • 6. 1 Corinthians 12:1 Spiritual Things • NAU 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual [4152 πνευματικός pneumatikos] gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. • YLT …the spiritual things… • In verse 2 Paul addresses the “spiritual things” starting with idolatry, and then in verse 3 “confessions”. In verse 4 he mentions “gifts” 6
  • 7. 1 Corinthians 12, Spiritual Gifts • Most commentators try to make a huge distinction between spiritual gifts and “natural” skills, abilities, or talents. • NAU 1 Corinthians 4:7 …What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? • NAU John 3:27 John [the baptist] answered and said, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven. • NAU James 1:17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the 7
  • 8. 1 Corinthians 12, Spiritual Gifts • There is nothing that you are, have, possess, or can do, that is not a gift from God; • NKJ Acts 17:28 "for in Him we live and move and have our being… • It's as though we lived in a fishbowl and everything is provided by our Master. • Everything is a gift from God! • Why do we boast? Boast in Him! 8
  • 9. A Study Of The Gifts Of God Begins In The OT • NAU Exodus 28:3 "You shall speak to all the skillful persons whom I have endowed with the spirit of wisdom, that they make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister as priest to Me. • NAU 2 Chronicles 2:12 …"Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, …who has given King David a wise son, endowed with discretion and understanding… 9
  • 10. A Study Of The Gifts Of God Begins In The OT • NAU Exodus 35:30 Then Moses said …the LORD has called by name Bezalel… 31 "And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding and in knowledge and in all craftsmanship; 32 to make designs for working in gold and in silver and in bronze, 33 and in the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of wood… 34 "He also has put in his heart to teach… 35 "He has filled them with skill to perform every work of an engraver and of a designer and of an embroiderer,… and of a weaver, as performers of every work and makers of designs. • No one claims these gifts today (you can't fake them). 10
  • 11. 4 Periods of Miracles Each About 80 Years • We tend to think that human history and the Bible are full of miracles. However, God restricted most of His use of class one miracles to 4 narrow periods of time in human history, always to the Jews, to authenticate His spokesman, warn about coming judgment, and provide deliverance. Every time was a major transition time for Israel (very Jewish). 1 Corinthians 1:22 For indeed Jews ask for signs… • Moses and Joshua • Elijah and Elisha • Daniel • Jesus and the 12 Apostles
  • 12. 1 Corinthians 12:3 Is this to be taken literally? • NAU 1 Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. • Yes! When they are “speaking by the Spirit of God”. Judas wasn’t, false teachers aren’t, and obviously Jesus spoke about many who will say, “on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’ (Matt 7:22-23) (John 6:44, 8:24). • However, even non-believers will be forced to admit He’s Lord eventually (Phil. 2:9-11, Zechariah 12:10). 12
  • 13. 1 Corinthians 12:4 Spiritual Gifts • NAU 1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are varieties of gifts [χαρισμάτων], but the same Spirit. • 5486 χάρισμα charisma {khar'-is-mah} • Meaning: 1) a favour with which one receives without any merit of his own 2) the gift of divine grace 3) the gift of faith, knowledge, holiness, virtue… 13
  • 14. 1 Corinthians 12:4 Gifts • NAU 1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. • NAU Romans 12:6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 14
  • 15. 1 Corinthians 12:4 Gifts 15
  • 16. 1 Corinthians 12:4, The Holy Spirit Comes To Every Believer At Conversion • The greatest gift is when God The Holy Spirit indwells every believer at conversion. • NAU Romans 8:9 …But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. • NAU Acts 10:44 …the Holy Spirit fell upon all… • NAU Ephesians 4:30 …the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. • NAU John 14:16 …another Helper, that He may be with you forever; • NAU Acts 11:15 …the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. NAU Titus 3:5 He saved us… renewing by the Holy Spirit, 16
  • 17. 1 Corinthians 12:6 God’s Providence • NAU 1 Corinthians 12:6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. • NAU Ephesians 1:11 …according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will… 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power… • NAU Romans 8:28 ..God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God… • NAU Matt 19:26 …with God all things are possible.” • NAU Genesis 22:8 …God will provide for Himself the lamb… • Luke 1:37, Genesis 18:14, 17

  • 19. 1 Corinthians 12:8, 1st. Century Signs They had no NT yet! • NAU 1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
  • 20. 1 Corinthians 12:10 What Is Tongues? • NAU 1 Corinthians 12:10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
  • 21. 1 Cor 14:21, “other tongues” • NKJ 1 Corinthians 14:21 In the law it is written: "With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me," says the Lord. • NKJ Isaiah 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue [LXX γλώσσης ἑτέρας] He will speak to this people, • Paul quotes Isaiah 28:11, and Isaiah 28:7-15 was a prophecy of judgment on the the Jews and Jerusalem. • LXX uses, γλώσσης ἑτέρας 2 1
  • 22. 1 Cor 14:21, “other tongues” • NKJ 1 Corinthians 14:21 In the law it is written: "With men of other tongues [heteroglossos] and other lips… • NKJ Acts 2:4 …began to speak with other tongues [heteros glossa]… • 2084 ἑτερόγλωσσος heteroglossos • Meaning: 1) one who speaks a foreign language, Usage: AV - other tongue 1; 1 • 2087 ἕτερος heteros, <1100> γλῶσσα glossa 2 2
  • 23. OT “other tongues”= Judgment • From Moses on God warned that strange tongues would be a sign of His judgment on them. • NAU Deuteronomy 28:49 "The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar…as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you shall not understand, • NAU Jeremiah 5:15 "Behold, I am bringing a nation against you… Israel," declares the LORD. …A nation whose language you do not know, Nor can you understand what they say. • The tongues at Pentecost were a sign of God’s 2 3
  • 24. “Signs of an apostle” • Why did God give these miraculous signs before the New Testament was completed? • NAU 2 Corinthians 12:12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles. • NAU Acts 5:12 At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place…
  • 25. “Signs of an apostle” • Paul does not list the signs of a false apostle, but you can see them on TV now. • Spiritual con men do miracles; NAU 2 Thessalonians 2:9 that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, NAU Luke 11:29 …a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign… • Some of the very great men in history, who were mightily used by God, did not do any miracles; 25
  • 26. All Miracles Are Not A Blessing And Signs, Wonders, And Miracles Ceased • Not everyone who asked experienced healing and miraculous deliverance. Steven was murdered Acts 7, believers suffered at the hands of Saul (8:1–3); James was decapitated by Herod Agrippa (12:2); Paul was stoned in (14:19), he suffered whipping, beatings, and imprisonment, and extreme perils (2 Cor. 11:24–33). These signs, wonders, and miracles were transitional, temporary, and are not normative now. Church history records that these signs of an apostle passed away with the apostles. Even in the book of Acts they are fading and the last one third of the book from chapter 22 to the end (about one third of the text) have only 2 or 3 of these miraculous events recorded. 26
  • 27. 1 Cor 12:9, Tongues: The Final Word … Got Better, Not “Lesser” BY BUD AHLHEIM • http://pulpitandpen.org/2017/02/16/tongues-the-final-word-got-better-not-lesser/ • pulpitandpen.org wrote, “For believers who are part of the glorious, contemporary revival of Reformed theology spreading across the globe, the pillar of sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone – is a well-known feature revived during the 16th-century Protestant Reformation. We recognize that Scripture is THE sole rule for our Christian faith and life. It is the infallible and inerrant authority. It is completely sufficient. • Implicit in sola Scriptura is the concept of tota Scriptura. The entirety of Scripture as the whole counsel of God must be embraced, comprehended, and obeyed by the believer. We cannot selectively excerpt from the Holy Writ those portions we deem personally acceptable upon which to build the framework for our understanding of God, of ourselves and our faith. The fullness of Scripture must be our source. Favored passages and teachings from Scripture we find soothing to our souls and easily digested by our understanding must be reconciled – as they can be – with the more difficult, and often seemingly abrasive, instruction from the Word that can be hard to swallow. Sola Scriptura necessarily means tota Scripture. We must not miss anything, avoid anything, or omit anything … nor should we want to. • A third ‘Scriptura” concept reborn in the Reformation is analogia Scriptura. The analogy of Scripture does not imply that the Word itself is an analogy to something external to it. Rather the phrase reveals the inherent characteristic of doctrinal consistency within the Word that must drive our study. Scripture must be compared with Scripture. God’s Word does not contradict itself. Thus, if we arrive at an understanding of a particular text’s meaning from one portion of Scripture, that understanding will rightly always correspond with the same, perhaps more fully illumined, meaning from another portion of Scripture. • We do not have to cast our gaze too far within modern evangelicalism to find these “Scripturas” being decimated by pulpits, demeaned to oblivion within pews, and disregarded in Sunday School rooms. The old standby phrase of any good Southern Baptist was once “Chapter and verse, please” when confronted with a Biblically-spurious notion. That laudable knee-jerk reaction for the authority and sufficiency of Scripture has all but disappeared to be replaced by the 27 Don't squint! The complete article follows after the THE END slide.
  • 28. 1 Corinthians 12:9 Healings, Tongues • pulpitandpen.org wrote, “…It is noteworthy, then, that among the instruction James gives – writing in the middle of the first century – to believers is guidance on what to do for someone who is sick in the church. If someone is sick, what are they to do? Are they to call for an apostle who could assuredly lay hands on and heal them? Or, are they to seek another believer supernaturally imbued with the gift of healing? • James gives neither of these answers. Instead, his guidance – again, given smack-dab in the middle of the 1st-century – is the same advice for the church today … “Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14) No calling for an healing-capable apostle. No summoning the believer with the gift of healing. Instead, the sick were to call for their elders to provide prayerful support, encouragement, and strength. …The gift of healing was 28
  • 29. 1 Corinthians 12:9 Healings, Tongues • certainly operable at the time James was writing. …why didn’t James just remind his readers of this presumed Christ-granted ability? …the reason that James might not have given this advice is the implicit evidence within the New Testament that these “signs and wonders” gifts were purpose-specific (authentication of the apostles, proclamation of the Gospel, and edification of the saints) and temporary. Outside of Acts, their presence in the New Testament is as obscure as their prevalence is in modern charismatic marketing. But, again, it’s important to note that James’ instruction was merely a decade and a half or so after Pentecost. And, also notably absent in James’ guidance for godly living is the “gift of tongues.” (His reference to the “tongue” in James 3:5-11 speaks to the virtue and vice of the untamable, physical tongue, not to to the supernatural “gift.”)…” 29
  • 30. 1 Corinthians 12:9 Healings, Tongues • pulpitandpen.org wrote; • “…New Testament tongues were revelational; • New Testament tongues were foreign languages; • New Testament tongues were for public consumption; • New Testament tongues were a sign indicating a radical change in the direction of redemptive history.”…” 30
  • 31. 1 Corinthians 12:10, Miracles, 1st. Century and Great Tribulation, Or Always? • NAU 1 Corinthians 12:10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. • During the Great Tribulation and start of The Millennium, says, Micah 7:15 "As in the days when you came out from the land of Egypt, I will show you miracles." 31
  • 32. 1 Corinthians 12:10 Are Miracles Possible? • Micah 7:15 …I will show you miracles. • The Jews had a perfectly understandable expectation of miracles (signs). • NAU John 2:18 The Jews then said to Him, "What sign do You show us… • NAU 1 Corinthians 1:22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; • Timothy Keller said, “If there is a Creator God, there is nothing illogical at all about the possibility of miracles. After all, if he created everything out of nothing, it would hardly be a problem for him to rearrange parts of it as and when he wishes.” 32

  • 35. 1 Corinthians 12:13, When / How do we receive the Holy Spirit? • gotquestions.org “Answer: The apostle Paul clearly taught that we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior. First Corinthians 12:13 … Romans 8:9 … Ephesians 1:13-14 … These three passages make it clear that the Holy Spirit is received at the moment of salvation. Paul could not say that we all were baptized by one Spirit and all given one Spirit to drink if not all of the Corinthian believers possessed the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 is even stronger, stating that if a person does not have the Spirit, he does not belong to Christ. • 37. 1 Cor. 12:13, One True Church, Mike Gendron • “The True Church - It is made up of all who were born again (1 Cor. 12:13). Its growth, doctrine and traditions were recorded in the New Testament. The "true church" is the one which continues the teachings and traditions of the first century church. • Nowhere in the New Testament do we find the “one true church” doing any of the following: praying to Mary and the saints, submitting to a pope, praying for souls in purgatory, offering indulgences for the remission of sin, ordaining a sacerdotal priesthood, offering a Eucharistic Christ on an altar or baptizing infants. • Jesus and His apostles warned us that His Church would have to fight against false teachers. There are repeated contrasts between the teachings of false teachers and the truth of God’s Word. Thus, the basis for determining truth from error is not based upon WHO is teaching it, but whether it is recorded in Scripture. Peter contended against false teachers by saying we have a "more sure word" to depend upon (2 Peter 1:16-21). He was referring to the written, inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God. Scripture is therefore the determining factor as to which church is preaching the truth.” 37

  • 39. 1 Corinthians 12:14,30, Cessationist, Cessationism, Question: "What is the gift of speaking in tongues?” gotquestions.org • Answer: The first occurrence of speaking in tongues occurred on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The apostles went out and shared the gospel with the crowds, speaking to them in their own languages: "We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" (Acts 2:11). The Greek word translated tongues literally means "languages." Therefore, the gift of tongues is speaking in a language a person does not know in order to minister to someone who does speak that language. In 1 Corinthians chapters 12"14, Paul discusses miraculous gifts, saying, "Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?" (1 Corinthians 14:6). According to the apostle Paul, and in agreement with the tongues described in Acts, speaking in tongues is valuable to the one hearing God's message in his or her own language, but it is useless to everyone else unless it is interpreted/translated. • A person with the gift of interpreting tongues (1 Corinthians 12:30) could understand what a tongues-speaker was saying even though he did not know the language that was being spoken. The tongues interpreter would then communicate the message of the tongues speaker to everyone else, so all could understand. "For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says" (1 Corinthians 14:13). Paul's conclusion regarding tongues that were not interpreted is powerful: "But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue" (1 Corinthians 14:19). • Is the gift of tongues for today? First Corinthians 13:8 mentions the gift of tongues ceasing, although it connects the ceasing with the arrival of the "perfect" in 1 Corinthians 13:10. Some point to a difference in the tense of the Greek verbs referring to prophecy and knowledge "ceasing" and that of tongues "being ceased" as evidence for tongues ceasing before the arrival of the "perfect." While possible, this is not explicitly clear from the text. Some also point to passages such as Isaiah 28:11 and Joel 2:28-29 as evidence that speaking in tongues was a sign of God's oncoming judgment. First Corinthians 14:22 describes tongues as a "sign to unbelievers." According to this argument, the gift of tongues was a warning to the Jews that God was going to judge Israel for rejecting Jesus Christ as Messiah. Therefore, when God did in fact judge Israel (with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70), the gift of tongues would no longer serve its intended purpose. While this view is possible, the primary purpose of tongues being fulfilled does not necessarily demand its cessation. Scripture does not conclusively assert that the gift of speaking in tongues has ceased.39

That laudable knee-jerk reaction for the authority and sufficiency of Scripture has all but disappeared to be replaced by the 56
  • 57. 1 Corinthians 12:13, When / How do we receive the Holy Spirit? • gotquestions.org “Answer: The apostle Paul clearly taught that we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior. First Corinthians 12:13 declares, “For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body— whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” Romans 8:9 tells us that if a person does not possess the Holy Spirit, he or she does not belong to Christ: “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” Ephesians 1:13-14 teaches us that the Holy Spirit is the seal of salvation for all those who believe: “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.” • These three passages make it clear that the Holy Spirit is received at the moment of salvation. Paul could not say that we all were baptized by one Spirit and all given one Spirit to drink if not all of the Corinthian believers possessed the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 is even stronger, stating that if a person does not have the Spirit, he does not belong to Christ. Therefore, the possession of the Spirit is an identifying factor of the possession of salvation. Further, the Holy Spirit could not be the “seal of salvation” (Ephesians 1:13-14) if He is not received at the moment of salvation. However, you did not go on to identify the additional "baptism" in the Holy Spirit as given in the Acts of the Apostles. This is an important distinction and is an experience for which all believers should seek. • ANSWER: • No, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not an additional experience. • 61. 1 Corinthians 12:1, Special / General Revelation Revelation • Question: "What is general revelation and special revelation?" Answer: General revelation and special revelation are the two ways God has chosen to reveal Himself to humanity. General revelation refers to the general truths that can be known about God through nature. Special revelation refers to the more specific truths that can be known about God through the supernatural. In regard to general revelation, Psalm 19:1-4 declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” According to this passage, God’s existence and power can be clearly seen through observing the universe. The order, intricacy, and wonder of creation speak to the existence of a powerful and glorious Creator. General revelation is also taught in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Like Psalm 19, Romans 1:20 teaches that God’s eternal power and divine nature are “clearly seen” and “understood” from what has been made, and that there is no excuse for denying these facts. With these Scriptures in mind, perhaps a working definition of general revelation would be “the revelation of God to all people, at all times, and in all places that proves that God exists and that He is intelligent, powerful, and transcendent.” Special revelation is how God has chosen to reveal Himself through miraculous means. Special revelation includes physical appearances of God, dreams, visions, the written Word of God, and most importantly—Jesus Christ. The Bible records God appearing in physical form many times (Genesis 3:8, 18:1; Exodus 3:1-4, 34:5-7), and the Bible records God speaking to people through dreams (Genesis 28:12, 37:5; 1 Kings 3:5; Daniel 2) and visions (Genesis 15:1; Ezekiel 8:3-4; Daniel 7; 2 Corinthians 12:1-7). Of primary importance in the revealing of God is His Word, the Bible, which is also a form of special revelation. God miraculously guided the authors of Scripture to correctly record His message to mankind, while still using their own styles and personalities. The Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). The Word of God is inspired, profitable, and sufficient (2 Timothy 3:16-17). God determined to have the truth regarding Him recorded in written form because He knew the inaccuracy and unreliability of oral tradition. He also understood that the dreams and visions of man can be misinterpreted. God decided to reveal everything that humanity needs to know about Him, what He expects, and what He has done for us in the Bible. The ultimate form of special revelation is the Person of Jesus Christ. God became a human being (John 1:1, 14). Hebrews 1:1-3 summarizes it best, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son … The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being.” God became a human being, in the Person of Jesus Christ, to identify with us, to set an example for us, to teach us, to reveal Himself to us, and, most importantly, to provide salvation for us by humbling Himself in death on the cross (Philippians 2:6-8). Jesus Christ is the ultimate “special revelation” from God. Recommended Resource: The Moody Handbook of Theology by Paul Enns. • GotQuestions.org via icontact.com 61

Is 1 Corinthians 12:3 to be taken literally that no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit? • A. I believe during the Church Age 1 Cor. 12:3 should be taken literally. No one can sincerely say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Spirit because only born again believers accept Jesus as their Lord. Non believers don’t think He’s their Lord and in any case don’t want Him to be. • But at the 2nd Coming, after everyone sees Him return in glory to take command of planet Earth, even non-believers will be forced to admit He’s the Lord of the whole Earth (Phil. 2:9-11, Zech. 14:9) even though they won’t have accepted Him as their Savior. This is why the people of Earth will mourn when they see Him coming on the clouds with power and great glory (Matt. 24:30). They will finally understand that He is who He has always claimed to be, and it will be too late for them to do anything about it. • http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/jesus-is- lord/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Gracethrufaith+%2 8GraceThruFaith%29 62

It is the Lord Jesus who divides believers from unbelievers by the truth of His Word (Luke 12:51-53).
