The Chicano Voice In Bless Me Ultima
Bless Me, Ultima, is a novel that may be understood to bridge several different cultural registers.
Commentators argue that one of the most significant aspects of the book, and of its historical
influence, is its ability to communicate a uniquely Chicano experience at a formative point in world
history. A crucial element of this aspect of the novel comes in its ability to mobilize particular myths
within its structure. Not only do these myths appear to play a crucial role within the action of the
novel itself, but they also contribute significantly to the uniqueness of the Chicano voice as it is
developed in the book. In this sense, myth is integral to both the action and the texture of the novel
as a whole. However, myth does not simply provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kanoza writes therefore that it is when Anaya's protagonist "comes to comprehend the kinship of the
golden carp and Christ and he realizes the obvious–that as the offspring of his mismatched parents
he is living proof that opposites can integrate" (Kenzo, 166). In this sense the myth of the golden
carp serves simultaneously to embody and also eventually to overcome the contradictions within the
novel as a whole. The capacity of myth to provide the ground for reconciliation is made clear in the
final passages of the novel, in which Anaya's protagonist reflects on his capacity to use the story of
the golden carp as one element of new religion. This religion would be that is capable of containing
but also of potentially sublimating religions that have come before it. One reads him asking himself
asking whether not "take the llano and the river valley, the moon and the sea, God and the golden
carp–and make something new" and coming to the conclusion that "that is what Ultima meant by
building strength from life" (Anyata, 1994, 248). The most important realization of the novel is that
contradictions may be overcome through an interaction with the myths of the past, but only in the
sense that such an interaction enables a synthesis from which something new may emerge. It is the
realization of the capacity for this synthesis which marks out the most important aspect of Antonio's
self knowledge at the end of the

Walt Whitman's Song Of Myself
In Walt Whitman's Song of Myself, the speaker often uses "I" as a way to embody individuals, or
"adjuncts," of society and the whole that they comprise. At other times, the use of "I" appears to
refer to the singular speaker, occasionally seeming to contradict its more encompassing voice. Two
particular passages from this selection of poems employ parenthetical statements that work both to
differentiate between which "I" is speaking, as well as to whom he is directing his words. This
manipulation of punctuation is most notable in poems 7 and 51, the first of which the speaker
informs the audience of the immortality of all people, while the latter expresses the brief nature of
the speaker's time with the reader and addresses potential contradictory ... Show more content on

The "I" is at the same time fleeting and everlasting since the speaker himself will die, but his words

of authority over the people and the "I" that speaks for the "multitudes" was present throughout this

Contradictions In Othello Research Paper
In the book Othello written by William Shakespeare, there are many characters who seem to show
contradiction in the way they act and talk. Contradiction is when there is a series of stamens and
ideas that oppose to one another. There are also character pairs who are contradictions. Shakespeare
puts contradictions in all his plays to make ether intensity of the play arise. Usually contradiction is
found with in a topic, in a conversation, and in pairs however in this play Shakespeare shows
contradiction with in a character. More specifically Othello. Othello is a complex and a
contradictory character and therefore his individual personality should be looked at and taken into
consideration when proving his contradictions. Othello is a character ... Show more content on

Just like the love between Othello and Desdemona. They show contradictions in many ways through
their love, as each character sees them differently just like Iago and Rodrigo. Because they don't like
Othello they focus a lot on his skin colour while the rest of the characters especially the duke sees
Othello as a great, brave military leader. The people like Iago, Rodrigo, Emilia and Barbanzio all
look at Desdemona as a pure white dove and when they see Othello they think of him as animal like
a "Barbary Horse" (1:1:112). The other contradiction shown in their relationship is that Desdemona
went against the rule that they had back then and choose Othello even though he is black instead of
choosing a white man. This is a big contradiction that is shown because back then that wasn't normal
for people to do that and Desdemona being the sweet innocent girl that people presume her to be
shows contradiction in a big way because it shows that Desdemona is not so sweet after all and
breaks the rules. Othello has become a puppet of Iago and believes everything that Iago tells him. In
this case Iago mentioned that Desdemona doesn't love Othello anymore and is cheating on him
because he is black, older, and has very rude manors " As, to be bold with you,/Not to affect many

tends–/Foh! One may smell in such a will most rank,/Foul disproportions, thoughts unnatural./But–

because Desdemona loves Othello and doesn't think that of

Comparison of Two Hospital Dramas: Casualty and ER Essay
Comparison of Two Hospital Dramas: Casualty and ER
This essay will compare the two hospital dramas, Casualty and ER.
Casualty is a British hospital drama. It is shown on BBC1 at 8:05 on a Saturday evening .It has been
one of the biggest and most popular hospital dramas ever made in Britain. The fact that it's lasted
over ten series, has been sold to many countries around the world, and it still manages to pull in big
audiences speaks for itself. The series is set in the fictional town of Holby, and is set in the hospital,
Holby A+E.
ER, on the other hand, is an American based hospital drama. It is shown in America on NBC, at

Disputes between doctors and nurses arise. The use of technical language is used a lot to make the
viewers respect the doctors for what they are doing and make the program seem more realistic. The
viewers also treat them as professionals. Doctors and nurses home life often affects their work. A
doctor or nurse often has a hidden secret, which could affect his/her work. A junior doctor often
disagrees with a senior doctor in a life or death situation, sometimes the junior doctor is right, but
sometimes s/he is wrong.
To be successful over a long period of time and keep the same amount of audiences, though, the
writers have to develop the conventions and change them slightly. They may make them more
detailed.
This, as the popularity and ratings show for the two programmes, works and in my mind the two
programmes are still as good as when they first started, around ten series ago.
In order to pull big audiences the two programmes use fairly attractive doctors and nurses (which, in
reality is very unlikely). To pull a mix of races, the doctors and nurses, in the two shows, are of
mixed race. The writers know that this will bring a bigger audience to the show. For example. If a
black doctor or nurse is used, this will attract a black audience.
I think that this is very successful and attracts a larger amount of people than it would if only white

Team Development And Leadership : Example Of Unhealthy...
Team Development & Leadership | L7438 A01
Example of unhealthy agreement within a team.
Unhealthy agreement occurs when everyone adopts the same point of view and follow blindly, as
opposed to introducing and considering other options and perspectives (Sims, 1992). According to
Sims (1992), Beech–Nut displayed a huge case of unhealthy agreement when they changed their
ingredients and lied about what they were selling to consumers. Employees displayed unhealthy
agreement by not countering the actions of the company, the unethical behavior of the company was
not questioned. Employees justified their behavior by convincing themselves of misgivings of other
organizations, the thought that they weren't hurting anyone, and by taking comfort in ignorance
(Sims, 1992). The organization may have had better success by properly communicating the issues
they were having and welcoming suggestions or alternatives that allowed them to continue to be
truthful and sell a healthy product.
Explain how this unhealthy agreement relates to the concepts of the Abilene Paradox and
Groupthink.
The Abilene Paradox, according to Taras (1991), is when members of a group as well aware the
problems facing the group based on a decision, and privately admit their disagreement, but publicly
agree with the decision despite reservations. This is kind agreement is unhealthy because it causes
the group to go through unnecessary strife, instead of just voicing the objections and possibly

Abilene Paradox Definition
The Abilene Paradox refers to a situation when a group makes a collective decision that is counter to
the thoughts and feelings of its individual members. The Abilene Paradox occurs because
individuals do not want to be a killjoy, even though their perceptions of the other members' feelings
are incorrect. It happens because humans have a natural aversion to go against the feelings of a
group – they want to conform socially. The Abilene Paradox may be conducted because individuals
believe they will experience negative feelings or attitudes if they talk about a topic. Of course, if no
one speaks, the group will make a decision that is contrary to the wishes and feelings of the group.

Examples Of The Horned Man Paradox
In every society, people ask questions that seem as though there are only two answers to, but neither
of which are accurate. "The Horned Man" paradox is a great example of this complex question. The
question asked can be answered with "it is true" or "it is false," but what happens when the
responder has never experienced what the question being asked? The responder must then answer
indirectly to try and explain him/herself, which can make their answer seem invalid. A good
example of this is the question, "Are you still beating your wife?" because it implies that one either
does beat one's wife or use to but no longer beats one's wife. What if one does not even have a wife?
Or what if one does have a wife but never beat her? This seemingly true or false question actually
requires a more intricate answer that the responder must think and realize before they blurt out an
answer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

implies that one has horns to begin with when, in fact, one may not have horns. But one appears to
have to answer this paradox with the conclusion "I still have horns" if one has not lost one's horns
because of the way the paradox is stated. In this situation, if "lost" means "no longer has, but had"
then "not lost" means the opposite, "still has" and "never had to begin with (Slater)." It forces a

Happiness And Emotions In The Poetry Of Blake And Rossetti
At first read, Blake and Rossetti's fascination with the unity of conflicting emotion and their
tendency to describe human experiences in contradictory terms might be perplexing. However, there
is a reason behind what seems to be madness in the poetry of these writers. The poetry of Blake and
Rossetti leads itself to the assertion that the human experience is teeming with both joy and agony.
Whether someone lives their life in a state of joy or woe does not depend on whether their
experience is positive or negative, because the human experience is both. Rather, someone's
happiness or sadness through their life depends on whether they choose to orient their focus to the
happiness and joy that exists in the universe or the negative pain that is just as abundant. Though
happiness and sadness take many different forms in the poetry, in each form, they are as abundant as
they are co–dependent. Blake and Rossetti take radical steps to express how related the feelings of
joy and woe are in time and space. In fact, in many places, their poetry subtly suggests that one
emotion cannot occur without the other, and that no situation is complete without elements of both
emotions.
Blake's' first unification of the two emotions occurs in his poem, Auguries of Innocence. Though
sadness and joy are not the main topic of the piece, these two emotions appear multiple times
through the poem. Interestingly, they are always referred to together, as "Joy & Woe". Never in the
poem does Blake

The Abilene Paradox Summary
The Abilene Paradox was coined by Jerry B. Harvey, Professor Emeritus of Management at the
George Washington University and author of "The Abilene Paradox and Other Meditations on
Management". The Abilene Paradox is simple and it's explained using a parable of a family of four
(parents and their daughter with her husband) in Texas who are sitting around, content, playing
checkers. When the father asks who wants to go to Abilene for dinner everyone eventually agrees.
Even though, they all know the hour long ride will be miserable and the food won't be worth it.
Upon returning from the uncomfortable trip, everyone begins to argue. The wife never wanted to go
but agreed to because she thought the father wanted to. The daughter and her husband ... Show more

By adopting this approach you may challenge your own limitations as a business owner or CEO. It
will require you to take into consideration everyone you work with: the employees, the suppliers,
the customers and the partners. This means that you must be willing to state your objectives clearly
to these people, to give them the opportunity to understand where you are trying to get to and why.
They must feel free to voice any concerns or doubts they hold and a mature conversation then
should take place, so that you as the CEO can decide which route you want to

The Role of a Nurse
1.1
Analyse the Role of the Nurse
The complex nature of nursing means that there is no single definition that encompasses every
aspect of the role of the nurse. A nurse is required to have several attributes and skills to carry out
their everyday duties; they must show compassion, empathy, excellent communication skills both
verbal and non–verbal. In some cases nurses are also required to become advocators for patients
who are not able to communicate for themselves. A nurse is also required to be non–prejudice and
understand and acknowledge other cultures and beliefs, for example some religions do not believe in
blood transfusions, as a nurse it is important not to judge when faced with such a dilemma.
It is paramount that the nurse is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other member may become resentful and this could cause the team to break down.
Working under supervision is equally as important as working in a team when it comes to nursing. It
is important because a nurse is required to be competent in everything she/he does. Therefore it is
beneficial as support is provided from a senior more experienced member of staff who is able to
guide and monitor junior members of the team. Monitoring the level of care/service provided to
patients 'and has the simultaneous purposes of enhancing the professional functioning of the junior
member(s)' (Consedine, 2004, internet).
1.3
Explain a range of ethical and moral dilemmas faced by a nurse.
Nurses face a wide range of ethical and moral dilemmas throughout their career. Ethical dilemmas
are situations in which there are conflicting moral claims. In some of these situations people do not
know what the ethically right thing to do is. They do not agree about the ethically right thing to do
and often cannot find satisfactory solutions or there are two equally unsatisfactory solutions. Or they
may know what the ethically right thing to do is, but do not want to act on this.
Do not resuscitate is becoming an increasingly common ethical dilemma. Some patients would
prefer not to be resuscitated where as others may decide otherwise. Recent cases have highlighted
the desirability to be resuscitated;

Examples Of Moral Dilemmas
2. What are values and norms and what is a moral dilemma?
To answer this question I will divide the question in three parts.
Starting with what values are. Values are an absolut or relative and ethic value of a person. Values
can be defined as a wide preference for specific actions.
The assumption of those can be a basic form for ethic handling.
A Value system is a set of consistense values and measures. A principale value is a fundamental on
which values and measures of integrity are based.
Some values are physiologically determined and used usually for avoiding fysical pain or for
looking for fun. Other values are subjective, they are different for every individu or for different
religions. These values are more based on religion and their beliefs. Different values are
ethical/moral vales, ideological values, social values and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Then the last part of this question, moral dilemmas. But what is a Moral dilemma?. A Moral
Dilemma is that two well–known cases conflict with eachother. In each case you have moral reasons
to do each of the two actions, but it is not possible to do both. This is what you call moral dilemmas.
What is really a common factor for moral dilemmas is, is that it is kind of required to do both
actions, in this situation you can choose one of them but you can't do both, so you start feeling that
you failed, because both actions are important for you. No matter which one you will choose you
always have the feeling that you failed or did something wrong. So to recap this all a Moral Dillema
is a Dillema between two factors/choices that are both important to you and whatever you choose
you will always think you made the wrong choice.

And it is because we are taught this common sense, that rural individuals of all ages are often some
of the best people to be around. Because they understand how things work, and that what goes
around comes around. This ties directly with the down–to– earth perspective that rural Kansas
offers.
Just exactly what is a down–to–earth perspective? A layman definition of a down–to–earth
perspective is seeing the world as it really is. You do not need to embellish it, or pretend that the
world is something that it is not. With a down–to–earth perspective you see the world, and in it, you
see truth. It is a second instinct of most Kanasans to develope a down–to–earth perspective, because
there is earth all around us. Farmers work in and with the earth to reap a bountiful harvest. Because

Organizational conflict or the "web of the Abilene Paradox" (Harvey, 1988) is more a result of the
inability to manage agreement than it is the ability manage conflict. According to Harvey, there are
six specific characteristics often displayed by groups that fail to manage agreement effectively.
Military organizations by nature of their design often have constant turnover and as a result a
climate survey is given at the beginning of a new Commander's time and at the six–month mark of

Graduating from the physical, however, that "up–downing, drop–rising" (p. 152) of her bottom,
Aldrick will come to realize that "her very desirability placed her above ordinary desiring" (p. 229),
the mere ownership which Guy intends, and it is at carnival that he first glimpses the future that they
might share, how he might paradoxically "lose himself and gain himself in her, swirling away with
her until together they disappeared into the self that she was calling back, calling forth" (p. 141).
Echoing the Indian, Pariag, and Philo the Calypsonian, Aldrick begins to desire to simply live and
love and grow, which is exactly why he has always loved Sylvia: her beauty was not a weapon, but a
"declaration of a faith in life and a promise of life" (p. 228). He alone realizes the paradox that
Sylvia is both "illuminated and doomed by that aura"(p. 229) of inner "sainted" beauty which Guy
threatens to suppress by effectively sequestering her in a new home in Diego Martin.
Only through the use of paradox could Lovelace convey the full range of emotion between Sylvia
and Aldrick, who both realize early on the spirituality of their love that blossomed like a mango rose

Ambiguity In Emily Bronte's 'Remembrance'
In the poem "Remembrance," Emily Bronte writes about a person who mourns the death of a loved
one. Since no names are explicitly given, however, ambiguity surrounds the identity of the speaker
and loved one. One interpretation is that the persona is Bronte herself, having lost her mother and
sisters at a young age. Another interpretation is that the persona is simply a figure through which
Bronte expresses the general experiences of love, loss, and memory. However, after reading the

states there are lower pleasures that are shared with animals, mostly physical, usually short–lived,

Reason And Disgust : Moral Foundations And Utilitarian...
Reason and Disgust in Moral Foundations and Utilitarian Judgments
Gajan Thiyagarajah (636280)
PSYC20009 – Personality and Social Psychology – 2014 Abstract
The current study considered the recent debate in moral psychology as to the primacy of emotion in
individual moral foundations and judgments (Haidt, 2001) against previous conceptions of
consciously driven reasoning processes as the major determinant in moral decisions (Turiel, 1983).
The study, involving 596 undergraduate psychology students, was in part derived from the Dual
Process Model (Greene, Nystrom, Engell, Darley, & Cohen, 2004) and questioned how distinct
characteristics of personal and impersonal moral dilemmas appealed to emotion and reason
respectively. It was suspected that the individual character trait Need For Cognition (NFC) would
show positive correlation with utilitarian (i.e. harm minimising) responses for both personal and
impersonal dilemmas. These hypotheses were not supported. The intuitive measure Disgust
Propensity (DP) was expected to show negative correlation with utilitarian responses for the
personal dilemma. It was also forecast that individuals with high levels of DP would demonstrate
sensitivity to violations of the moral foundation of purity (Graham, Nosek, Haidt, Iyer, Koleva, &
Ditto, 2011). These hypotheses were supported. The findings provide limited proof of the role of
individual characteristics in moral activities. Further research accounting for factors such as age,

Abilene Paradox Essay
The Abilene Paradox occurs when members of an organization take an action contrary to what they
really want to do and, as a result, defeat the very purposes they are trying to achieve
The lack of the ability to manage agreement is expressed by six specific sub symptoms: 1)
Individuals agree as to the nature of the problem or situation. 2) There is individual agreement as to
the steps that should be taken. 3) Organization members fail to communicate their desires and
beliefs to one another. 4) Inaccurate and invalid information is then used to make decisions. 5)
Everyone is angry, irritated, and frustrated with the organization. 6) The cycle repeats itself.

Avoiding "making a trip to Abilene" in our organizations takes the courageous act by each of us of
both refusing to be victims and refusing to victimize others.
Building strong dialogue and advocacy/inquiry skills, as well as building confidence that one will
not be alienated if one speaks one's mind, are necessary for making the decision not to go to
Abilene.
Conclusion
We need to raise individual and group consciousness about the problems of not testing early and
often for consensus. We need to build strong dialogue, inquiry, and advocacy skills and learn how to
use them as is situationally appropriate. And, finally, we need to learn how to avoid true loneliness
by giving our thoughts and opinions voice and trusting the group with which we are working.
Often taking a stand against decisions is coined as rebellious nature of individuals. But this
behaviour is essential in the making of a true manager. As by going with the tide one might be
instilled with feelings of regret and beat himself over it but by raising a voice it gives one the sense
of satisfaction of trying and venting out what one thinks. Many a times the best of top managers are
not able to see out of the box where strategies are concerned and young individuals will by human
nature hesitate to give suggestions to not 'offend' superiors. Thus many a times they agree to things
which are not a 100% appealing to them. This is also called Abilene Paradox.
In our very daily life we may often make trips to

Happiness In Abilene Texas
Happiness is one of the most significant dimensions of human experience. Many people can argue
that happiness is a meaningful and desirable entity. Studies indicate that everyone pursues happiness
in various aspects of their life. Our four fathers saw happiness as a need, so they made the pursuit of
happiness as one of the three unalienable rights branded in the Declaration of Independence. There
is a sense of complexity behind the meaning of happiness; its definition is not definite. Think of
happiness as a rope; there are many thin fiber strands bonded together to become the strength of the
rope. Like the analogy of the rope, there are numerous factors that can contribute to an individual's
overall happiness in life. This study is going to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

disregard for gender. The gap between whites and blacks neared to a close but there was still a lack

constructs was called eudaimonia which is a way of living "focused on what is intrinsically
worthwhile to human beings" (Ryan, Huta, & Deci, 2008, p. 147; Aghababaei & Blachnio, 2014)

My Strengths And Weaknesses Of My Writing
Have you ever cleaned out your closet and found many items you never knew you owned? That is
the way English 101 felt to me. I learned important skills and techniques that I will maintain even
though the course is over. I will be constantly improving what I have learned–meaning I will work
to carry about my strengths and eliminate my remaining weaknesses. English 101 has helped me
grow as a reader, a writer, and most importantly a person.
My writing has progressed during the term by becoming more specific and sophisticated on an
analytic level. I have learned to closely observe what I am reading or researching; this helping to
improve the credibility in my writing. When the grades were passed back for the first minor writing,
I was highly dissatisfied with the grade I received. In high school, I always got excellent grades on
my papers; making it hard for me to accept the challenge that was now presented in front of me.
After sitting down and figuring out my mistakes, I realized I was an extremely general writer. I
forgot to include multiple details that were necessary for the readers understanding–as it was
difficult for me to analyze writing from another perspective. My first minor writing paper was titled
"A healthy Friendship" and it explained a paradigm shift that involved one of my current best
friends. This was my weakest writing by far. After I revised the paper and still did not receive my
ideal grade, I knew I would have to work incredibly hard in this college

Making difficult decisions show up in life more often than...
Making difficult decisions show up in life more often than realized. These choices can alter a
person's life in good and bad ways. "The Bicycle" by Jillian Horton is a story that focuses on a
young talented pianist named Hannah. Throughout the story Hannah deals with the strict teachings
of her Tante Rose, which leads her to make ironic decisions. Similarly, in the story "Lather and
Nothing Else" by Hernando Tellez, the barber undergoes a dilemma in which he must consider his
moral values before making his final decision. Both stories have a protagonist that face conflicts
which lead to difficult decision making, and in the end leads the characters to discover themselves.

Horton and Tellez both portray the theme of making difficult choices in their stories. The
protagonist's in each story consider all their options and think ahead before making a life changing
decision. In the stories "The Bicycle" and "Lather and Nothing Else" both Horton and Tellez use
symbolism to portray an overall theme of making difficult choices. In "The Bicycle" Hannah has her
life completely controlled by her Tante Rose. She has no freedom because she is forbidden to break
the Sabbath in anyway, and due to Tante Rose's previous traumatic experience with a bicycle, she is
absolutely forbidden to ride one. In the end, Hannah chooses to go against her aunts wishes and
rides a bicycle. She expresses that she wanted to "prove she had some control over her own life"
(Horton 35). The bicycle acts as a symbol of freedom; from Hannah breaking the promise she made
to her Tante Rose, to having control of her own life and becoming who she wanted to be from the
start. Likewise, in "Lather and Nothing Else" the barber untimely had a choice of being a murderer
or hero. The razor blade is one of the most important symbols because it represents his choice of
killing the captain or not. This was how the barber would determine his future. He says, "I was
stropping my best blade". (Tellez 346). "My fate hangs on the edge of this razor blade". (Tellez 346).
This was a big moral dilemma for the barber, and at this point he was really choosing what kind of
person he wanted to

Introduction. In Term Three Of The Practical Nursing Program
Introduction In term three of the practical nursing program we started our first placement in a
hospital setting. During the second week of placement we went out onto our assignment floors and
got to shadow a nurse. That morning I went to see all of the patients that my nurse had for the day to
introduce myself and tell them if they need anything to let me know. One of the patients that
morning was crying, so I had went up to her asked what was wrong, her response was "I have been
sitting in my own stool since 6am, I rang my call bell and no one has came". This type of situation
was a moral dilemma, the patient is unable to change her own brief and the nurse was not nearby to
do so. As a student nurse I was unable to do a bed bath and ... Show more content on

A brief is suppose to be changed at least 5–8 times a day or immediately after it 's been soiled. After
a brief change it is important to clean the area properly to prevent any infections. A urinary tract
infection can occur if a patient stays in their soiled brief for an extended amount of time or if they
are not cleansed properly. Another consequence with having a soiled brief is that you could be at
risk for skin breakdown. As stated "Too much moisture over–hydrates the skin, making it weak and
more sensitive to friction, shear and breakdown (think about being in the tub or pool for a long
time). Primary sources of excess skin moisture include sweating, bowel and bladder accidents, and
drainage from wounds" (Skin Health: Prevention and Treatment of Skin Breakdown,2011).
Therefore, if a healthcare provider does not attend to a soiled brief immediately, risk for infection
and skin breakdown will occur.
My personal/ professional values and beliefs In this situation I felt that it conflicted with me on a
personal and professional level, being a student nurse and also a women. When I first went into the
room and seen a patient crying, I wanted to help but with my qualifications as a student I was not
able to. As a women not being able to change yourself or do anything on your own, takes away your
pride and dignity, making you feel useless and lowers your self–esteem. If I had a family member in
the hospital I would hope that the nurses are treating them

Abilene Paradox
The Abilene Paradox occurs when members of an organization take an action contrary to what they
really want to do and, as a result, defeat the very purposes they are trying to achieve The lack of the
ability to manage agreement is expressed by six specific sub symptoms: 1) Individuals agree as to
the nature of the problem or situation. 2) There is individual agreement as to the steps that should be
taken. 3) Organization members fail to communicate their desires and beliefs to one another. 4)
Inaccurate and invalid information is then used to make decisions. 5) Everyone is angry, irritated,
and frustrated with the organization. 6) The cycle repeats itself. What's Behind The Paradox? It is
the lack of logic that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The employer thinks likewise. During a meeting assumptions are thoroughly checked, all options
are reviewed keeping risks and benefits in mind. Achieving the objectives and checking the
confidence of the individuals, making sure the situation is recoverable is of utmost importance.
These factors are kept in mind by 87% of the employees. The employer on the other hand is open to
all further doubts brought about by his employees. After decisions are made, the members are still
open to all concerns raised and don't let poor decisions stand. Wrong decisions are still open to be
rechecked. 28% of the employees still follow the herd and don't voice opinions made by the heads.
DISCUSSION Members fail to communicate their desires and/or beliefs to one another, and, most
importantly, sometimes even communicate the very opposite of their wishes based on what they
assume are the desires and opinions of others. People make incorrect assumptions about consensus.
Based on inaccurate perceptions and assumptions, members make a collective decision that leads to
action. It is in the action that it becomes apparent that the decision is contrary to individual desires.
Members experience frustration, anger, and dissatisfaction with the organization. Often this leads to
the forming of sub–groups that take combative or blaming positions toward each other.

How Did Frederick Douglass Benefit From His Education
Throughout the works of Frederick Douglass there is a prominent contradiction referring to literacy.
At times, Douglass regrets his education as it makes his slavery more difficult to tolerate.
Additionally, his education opens them up to more abuse as Harriet Jacob asserts they were living in
a "culture of silence" (Cutter 209). Thorough examination of Frederick Douglass' writing reveals
various paradoxes within his testimony regarding his literary education; while Douglass did benefit
from his education in some way, in many other ways, it shattered his spirit and lead to a lifetime of
abuse.
Douglass' narrative demonstrates how his literary education is both a blessing and a curse. He
believed that permitting slaves to read was a contradiction, a paradox if you will, unable to render
freedom, or provide them a legitimate education. Douglass reasoned that the education was a ploy to
let African Americans believe they were treated fairly. Douglass expresses, "As I read and
contemplated the subject, behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would
follow my learning to read had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish"
(Douglass 1200). Douglass displays the injustice and frustration of this situation; he is fully aware
that he is being treated unfairly.
For a short time, Douglass did consider his literacy a gift. This was the first opportunity that many
African Americans had to obtain an education. Having the ability to read

The Abilene Paradox
THE ABILENE PARADOX
If you have ever found yourself in a situation where you agreed with a group of people to take an
action, even if you believed that the outcome will definitely be the opposite of what you wanted to
achieve, just because you felt that you will be ridiculed or because you feared about separation from
the group, then you probably caught yourself in the nets of a paradox, "The Abilene Paradox".
Abilene paradox is the phenomenon when a group of people agrees to an action which is opposed to
the feelings and thoughts of the individual members of the group. Jerry B. Harvey, Emeritus
Professor of Management at the George Washington University, introduced this term in his article
"The Abilene Paradox: The Management of Agreement" in 1974. The name Abilene comes from an
anecdote he used in his article which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Members of the organization privately, as individuals, understand the problem or the situation that
the organization faces and as individuals again decide about the appropriate solution for the
problem. But when the time comes to take a decision as a group, individuals fail to communicate
their thoughts to the other members of the organization, because they mistakenly think that their
own choices are against group believes. Therefore they are driven to make collective decisions
which are totally different from what they really wanted to do and the consequences of their actions
are to sharpen problems of the organization instead of solving them and also to create anger and
dissatisfaction among the members of the group, which commit subgroups and blame the others for
the downstream of the organization. All of the above seem to be absurd as members of the group
having fully aware of what they are doing, are taking actions which are damned to fail. However

What Are Ethical Dilemma
TYPES OF ETHICAL DILEMMAS This concept was taken from module 7"ethical dilemmas", sub
topic 1" understanding ethical dilemmas". Ethical dilemmas are situations in which there is a choice
to be made between two options, both of which are morally correct but other options are in conflict.
Choosing one of the option will result in transgressing against the other. Ethical dilemmas are also
known as moral dilemmas and it should be known that neither of the choices which presents itself in
this situation can resolve the situation in an ethically acceptable way. Nurses are faced with ethical
dilemmas daily in different areas of practice. The bad thing about such situations are that whatever

BELIEF: In these dilemmas, research based knowledge in nursing practice is contrasted to beliefs
gained from such things as religious beliefs. For example, what should a nurse do when a patient is
admitted to the hospital that desperately needs a transfusion to live but has the belief that
transfusions are unacceptable? The nurse knows this patient will die without the transfusion. How
does that nurse empathize with the patient's family who supports the family member's choice and
still be supportive of the patient's and family's right to this decision? There are also dilemma of
confidentiality where you are confused as to keep patient's information private and risk causing
harm to others or disclose patient's information and save the lives of others. There are also dilemma
of non–maleficence which involves avoiding harm and also the dilemma of fidelity which involves
faithfulness and honoring promises made to patients even when you have lots of other patients to
attend to and keeping the promise seems impossible. PERSONAL

Poetry Analysis Robert Frost Essay
POETRY ANALYSIS: DESIGN Robert Frost's poem Design seemingly disputes the question
whether there is a design to life; yet, he is not able to establish an answer. Despite the comlexity of
his poem his implied message is rather simple. Frost's statement clarified human's eagerness to
finding a meaning to life and an essential background and reason to events, regardless of how small
and insignificant they might be. His work states an advice not to interpret too much into
insignificant conincidences or apportion them too much relevance. During the first stanza, the
speaker of the poem encounters a dimpled white spider on a white heal–all that has previously
caught a white moth. This seemingly coincidental situation is so distinct ... Show more content on

Furthermore, he proposes two answers on how the conincidence might have happenend. He suggests
that a "design of darkness," an evil power, delectated by conceiling a bad deed in the color of
goodness, is to be held responsible. Yet, a spider killing an insect is a fairly common sight and in no
way spectacular. This would imply, that the designer, God, or whatever you might want to call it,
himself, besides all the beauty on earth, also created destruction. This is a shocking picture and
differs from most peoples' image of a creator which is what makes this poem so powerful and
striking. His second idea would be that there is no order and design to life at all. If this small
example of destruction was not the work of some evil force, then –so his argumentation– there can
be no God or goodness leading the small things on earth. Consequently, if small things on earth are
not governed by a good force, the possibility of no god or no design at all is given. But does this
form of reasoning not seem a little far fetched, almost satiric? Even though Robert Frost is known
for agnostic poetry, this poem obviously focuses on humanity. It is a parody of humans' everlasting
curiosity and their compulsion to find a proof for a supreme being and a reason for existence on
earth. He is describing a spider killing a moth while sitting on a flower and despite the fact that there
is a perfectly plausible biological

Mastering The Equivocal Paradox Essay
Mastering the Equivocal Paradox
This is the beginning of the end of confusion of a paradox. All, except the somber shellfish–
allergenic people, can appreciate the wittiest paradox found twenty thousand leagues under the sea:
the magnificent jumbo shrimp. This peculiar crustacean is one of the many forms of puzzling
contradictions. There is an endless amount of self–contradicting, seemingly impossible, yet truthful
statements around the world, and it is our job to justify and rationalize these arguments. Paradox is
important to the development of logical systems. Without paradox, any surprise of a counter–
intuitive claim or proposition would seem over our heads and forever impossible, without a solution.
It is left to the brilliant minds of philosophers, artists, writers, poets, engineers, mathematicians, and
countless others to challenge our cerebrum. It is the majestically roaring, frozen conundrum of M.C.
Escher's "Waterfall" that contains an incongruity which, when followed, flows in the same path up
the steps and down the balcony again and again. The puzzling result of this is not really a
contradiction, but a valid deduction of acceptable premises.
Layers of the Onion
To understanding a paradox is to understand the many comparisons and definitions this enigma
contains. The critical thinking implied in trying to understand the absurd proposition can seem
unreal, but still expresses a possible truth. A paradox is contradictory, however a mere contradiction
is nonsense

Analysis Of Dramatic Irony In Marlowe
C
hristopher Marlowe has been characterized by various critics as a subjective playwright, one whose
passions are reflected in the passions of his characters. Michel Poirier states that Marlowe's mind "is
spurred on by a passion similar to the one he has ascribed to some of the characters in his dramas."
Poirier concludes that there is a definite connection between Marlowe's temperament and ideas. His
desires govern his thoughts and his passions are the basis for his philosophy. Poirier considers that
egotism is at the centre of his life and works. Paul Kocher goes so far as to say that Marlowe's
degree of subjectivity as a dramatist is the most important problem of all interpretation of his work.
Kocher further notes that any theory of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
R. B. Sharpe defines irony as "an attitude, a temper, a spirit in which one looks at life and art. It
brings to light and emphasizes by art the contradictions of living." G. G. Sedgewick gives the
following definition of dramatic irony: "Dramatic irony, in brief, is the sense of contradiction felt by
spectators of a drama who see a character acting in ignorance of his condition. This is dramatic
irony in its concentrated and specific form: it grows ... out of that pervasive and controlling
knowledge which we have called general irony and which is the property peculiar and essential to
the illusion of the theatre."
Sharpe's and Sedgewick's definitions of irony and dramatic irony are especially meaningful when
one considers Marlowe's plays. The plays contain many contradictions of life – contradictions
between what appears to be truth and what is truth, between aspiration and achievement, between
speech and action. And Marlowe's characters consistently act ignorant of their conditions. In
Tamburlaine, Faustus, Edward, Mortimer, Barabas, Guise, Dido, and other minor characters,
Marlowe has created characters in whom every speech and action involve ironic undertones
resulting from this ignorance. This irony establishes an objective position on the part of the
playwright, thus, irony allowing Marlowe to maintain a detachment from his

Literary Devices In To Kill A Mockingbird
Literary devices can be mildly, or majorly, confusing, depending on personal reading level or the
way they are taught, which can make all the difference. Thankfully, there are many books that can
aid in understanding the pesky literary terms. Like How to Read Literature Like a Professor by
Thomas C. Foster, for example. Each chapter of the book focuses on a literary device or technique
that may have multiple meanings depending on the context. Therefore, this book can help readers
understand more confusing pieces of literature with underlying messages such as To Kill a
Mockingbird. Particularly, Foster can help readers dissect more difficult parts of the novel by Lee
including violence and death, symbols, and ironies.
Violence and death are limited in To Kill a Mockingbird, as there is really only one case. The case of
Tom Robbinson and his trial for raping Mayella Ewell, which is none the less a bit confusing. When
Bob and Mayella Ewell both come to the stand, they insist that Mayella was choked and beat on the
right ride of her face, indicating someone primarily left handed would have done the crime. At first
glance, a reader may wonder why that matters, but in chapter eleven of HTRLLAP, "More Than It's
Gonna Hurt You: Concerning Violence," Foster points out that while violence is literal, there "is
usually also something else" (Foster 95). Later in TKAM readers realize there is something else;
Tom Robbinson has a maimed left arm, which as Scout explains, she could see

Force Paradox: The Irresistible Force
The irresistible force paradox, also called the unstoppable force paradox or shield and spear
paradox, is a classic paradox formulated as "What happens when an unstoppable force meets an
immovable object?" This paradox is a form of the omnipotence paradox, which is a simple
demonstration that challenges omnipotence: "Can God create a stone so heavy that not even God is
strong enough to lift it?" The immovable object and the irresistible force are both implicitly assumed
to be indestructible, or else the question would have a trivial resolution. Furthermore, it is assumed
that they are two separate entities.
The paradox arises because it rests on two incompatible premises: that there can exist
simultaneously such things as irresistible forces and immovable objects. The "paradox" is flawed
because if there exists an irresistible force it follows logically that there cannot be any such thing as
an immovable object and vice versa.[1]

This term originates from a story (see the Kanbun example) in the 3rd century BC philosophical
book Han Feizi.[2] In the story, a man was trying to sell a spear and a shield. When asked how good
his spear was, he said that his spear could pierce any shield. Then, when asked how good his shield
was, he said that it could defend from all spear attacks. Then one person asked him what would
happen if he were to take his spear to strike his shield; the seller could not answer. This led to the
idiom of "zìxīang máodùn" (自相矛盾), or "self–contradictory". Another ancient and mythological
example illustrating this theme can be found in the story of the Teumessian fox, who can never be
caught, and the hound Laelaps, who never misses what it hunts. Realizing the paradox, Zeus turns
both creatures into static stars.[citation

As I said before however at the first scenes it was hard to understand whether if the memories are

Ethical Dilemmas : Ethical Dilemma
INTRODUCTION "Nearly all healthcare clinicians have or will encounter ethical dilemmas during
their clinical operations. Consequently most of them get not training on how to solve the situation.
The clinical professionals should be trained on how to resolve ethical dilemma cases, since they are
vulnerable to this kind of cases. Ethical dilemmas affect the psychological decisions one makes
since they dread transgressing on other imperative moral decisions. Cases of ethical dilemmas affect
almost every person regardless of their class or status in the society. Ethical dilemmas in clinical

themselves perplexed by some ethical issues in their operations, the same way their juniors would

the ethical theories under which the above stated issue can be evaluated. The three main types of

The Impacts of Decisions and Outcomes in Hernando Tellez’s...
As human beings, it is inevitable to face moral dilemmas in life. When it comes to decision–making
of a complex situation, individuals often consider their own values and consequences to their
actions. Hernando Tellez's "Lather and Nothing Else" and Edith Pargeter's "The Purple Children"
demonstrate the conflicts a person has with themselves when approached with a challenging
situation which requires decision–making. The barber from "Lather and Nothing Else" and the
sentry from "The Purple Children" demonstrate the importance of placing one's own values as a
priority when making a difficult choice because it will allow the individual to make peace with the
outcome. Individuals who give more worth to penalties that would put themselves at risk than those
costs that do not affect them as much are more likely to be content with their decisions. For
example, the temptation of murder that the Barber felt when shaving Captain Torres was overruled
by the punishments that the Barber would have to encounter, "He wouldn't suffer. But what would I
do with the body? Where would I hide it? I'd have to run, leaving all of this, take cover far, far away.
But they would follow me until they ran into me. 'Captain Torres' murderer. He cut his throat while
he was shaving him. What a coward'" (Tellez). This establishes an in–depth moral dilemma that the
barber encounters when deciding to give in to his temptations or to stick to his values as a person.

The Chicano Voice In Bless Me Ultima

  • 1. The Chicano Voice In Bless Me Ultima Bless Me, Ultima, is a novel that may be understood to bridge several different cultural registers. Commentators argue that one of the most significant aspects of the book, and of its historical influence, is its ability to communicate a uniquely Chicano experience at a formative point in world history. A crucial element of this aspect of the novel comes in its ability to mobilize particular myths within its structure. Not only do these myths appear to play a crucial role within the action of the novel itself, but they also contribute significantly to the uniqueness of the Chicano voice as it is developed in the book. In this sense, myth is integral to both the action and the texture of the novel as a whole. However, myth does not simply provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kanoza writes therefore that it is when Anaya's protagonist "comes to comprehend the kinship of the golden carp and Christ and he realizes the obvious–that as the offspring of his mismatched parents he is living proof that opposites can integrate" (Kenzo, 166). In this sense the myth of the golden carp serves simultaneously to embody and also eventually to overcome the contradictions within the novel as a whole. The capacity of myth to provide the ground for reconciliation is made clear in the final passages of the novel, in which Anaya's protagonist reflects on his capacity to use the story of the golden carp as one element of new religion. This religion would be that is capable of containing but also of potentially sublimating religions that have come before it. One reads him asking himself asking whether not "take the llano and the river valley, the moon and the sea, God and the golden carp–and make something new" and coming to the conclusion that "that is what Ultima meant by building strength from life" (Anyata, 1994, 248). The most important realization of the novel is that contradictions may be overcome through an interaction with the myths of the past, but only in the sense that such an interaction enables a synthesis from which something new may emerge. It is the realization of the capacity for this synthesis which marks out the most important aspect of Antonio's self knowledge at the end of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Walt Whitman's Song Of Myself In Walt Whitman's Song of Myself, the speaker often uses "I" as a way to embody individuals, or "adjuncts," of society and the whole that they comprise. At other times, the use of "I" appears to refer to the singular speaker, occasionally seeming to contradict its more encompassing voice. Two particular passages from this selection of poems employ parenthetical statements that work both to differentiate between which "I" is speaking, as well as to whom he is directing his words. This manipulation of punctuation is most notable in poems 7 and 51, the first of which the speaker informs the audience of the immortality of all people, while the latter expresses the brief nature of the speaker's time with the reader and addresses potential contradictory ... The "I" is at the same time fleeting and everlasting since the speaker himself will die, but his words and thoughts will continue through the "I" that incorporates everyone, which proves that contradictions can exist. • 5. Contradictions In Othello Research Paper In the book Othello written by William Shakespeare, there are many characters who seem to show contradiction in the way they act and talk. Contradiction is when there is a series of stamens and ideas that oppose to one another. There are also character pairs who are contradictions. Shakespeare puts contradictions in all his plays to make ether intensity of the play arise. Usually contradiction is found with in a topic, in a conversation, and in pairs however in this play Shakespeare shows contradiction with in a character. More specifically Othello. Othello is a complex and a contradictory character and therefore his individual personality should be looked at and taken into consideration when proving his contradictions. Othello is a character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just like the love between Othello and Desdemona. They show contradictions in many ways through their love, as each character sees them differently just like Iago and Rodrigo. Because they don't like Othello they focus a lot on his skin colour while the rest of the characters especially the duke sees Othello as a great, brave military leader. The people like Iago, Rodrigo, Emilia and Barbanzio all look at Desdemona as a pure white dove and when they see Othello they think of him as animal like a "Barbary Horse" (1:1:112). The other contradiction shown in their relationship is that Desdemona went against the rule that they had back then and choose Othello even though he is black instead of choosing a white man. This is a big contradiction that is shown because back then that wasn't normal for people to do that and Desdemona being the sweet innocent girl that people presume her to be shows contradiction in a big way because it shows that Desdemona is not so sweet after all and breaks the rules. Othello has become a puppet of Iago and believes everything that Iago tells him. In this case Iago mentioned that Desdemona doesn't love Othello anymore and is cheating on him because he is black, older, and has very rude manors " As, to be bold with you,/Not to affect many proposèd matches/Of her own clime, complexion, and degree,/Whereto we see in all things nature tends–/Foh! One may smell in such a will most rank,/Foul disproportions, thoughts unnatural./But– pardon me–I do not in position/Distinctly speak of her,"(3:3:230–237). Casualty is a British hospital drama. It is shown on BBC1 at 8:05 on a Saturday evening .It has been one of the biggest and most popular hospital dramas ever made in Britain. The fact that it's lasted over ten series, has been sold to many countries around the world, and it still manages to pull in big audiences speaks for itself. The series is set in the fictional town of Holby, and is set in the hospital, Holby A+E. ER, on the other hand, is an American based hospital drama. The use of technical language is used a lot to make the viewers respect the doctors for what they are doing and make the program seem more realistic. The viewers also treat them as professionals. Doctors and nurses home life often affects their work. A doctor or nurse often has a hidden secret, which could affect his/her work. A junior doctor often disagrees with a senior doctor in a life or death situation, sometimes the junior doctor is right, but sometimes s/he is wrong. To be successful over a long period of time and keep the same amount of audiences, though, the writers have to develop the conventions and change them slightly. They may make them more detailed. This, as the popularity and ratings show for the two programmes, works and in my mind the two programmes are still as good as when they first started, around ten series ago. In order to pull big audiences the two programmes use fairly attractive doctors and nurses (which, in reality is very unlikely). To pull a mix of races, the doctors and nurses, in the two shows, are of mixed race. The writers know that this will bring a bigger audience to the show. For example. If a black doctor or nurse is used, this will attract a black audience. I think that this is very successful and attracts a larger amount of people than it would if only white doctors

  • 10. Team Development And Leadership : Example Of Unhealthy... Team Development & Leadership | L7438 A01 Example of unhealthy agreement within a team. Unhealthy agreement occurs when everyone adopts the same point of view and follow blindly, as opposed to introducing and considering other options and perspectives (Sims, 1992). According to Sims (1992), Beech–Nut displayed a huge case of unhealthy agreement when they changed their ingredients and lied about what they were selling to consumers. Employees displayed unhealthy agreement by not countering the actions of the company, the unethical behavior of the company was not questioned. Employees justified their behavior by convincing themselves of misgivings of other organizations, the thought that they weren't hurting anyone, and by taking comfort in ignorance (Sims, 1992). The organization may have had better success by properly communicating the issues they were having and welcoming suggestions or alternatives that allowed them to continue to be truthful and sell a healthy product. Explain how this unhealthy agreement relates to the concepts of the Abilene Paradox and Groupthink. The Abilene Paradox, according to Taras (1991), is when members of a group as well aware the problems facing the group based on a decision, and privately admit their disagreement, but publicly agree with the decision despite reservations. This is kind agreement is unhealthy because it causes the group to go through unnecessary strife, instead of just voicing the objections and possibly changing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Abilene Paradox Definition The Abilene Paradox refers to a situation when a group makes a collective decision that is counter to the thoughts and feelings of its individual members. The Abilene Paradox occurs because individuals do not want to be a killjoy, even though their perceptions of the other members' feelings are incorrect. It happens because humans have a natural aversion to go against the feelings of a group – they want to conform socially. The Abilene Paradox may be conducted because individuals believe they will experience negative feelings or attitudes if they talk about a topic. Of course, if no one speaks, the group will make a decision that is contrary to the wishes and feelings of the group. We can compare the similarity between the case of study Abilene ... • 14. Examples Of The Horned Man Paradox In every society, people ask questions that seem as though there are only two answers to, but neither of which are accurate. "The Horned Man" paradox is a great example of this complex question. The question asked can be answered with "it is true" or "it is false," but what happens when the responder has never experienced what the question being asked? The responder must then answer indirectly to try and explain him/herself, which can make their answer seem invalid. A good example of this is the question, "Are you still beating your wife?" because it implies that one either does beat one's wife or use to but no longer beats one's wife. What if one does not even have a wife? Or what if one does have a wife but never beat her? This seemingly true or false question actually requires a more intricate answer that the responder must think and realize before they blurt out an answer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 16. Happiness And Emotions In The Poetry Of Blake And Rossetti At first read, Blake and Rossetti's fascination with the unity of conflicting emotion and their tendency to describe human experiences in contradictory terms might be perplexing. However, there is a reason behind what seems to be madness in the poetry of these writers. The poetry of Blake and Rossetti leads itself to the assertion that the human experience is teeming with both joy and agony. Whether someone lives their life in a state of joy or woe does not depend on whether their experience is positive or negative, because the human experience is both. Rather, someone's happiness or sadness through their life depends on whether they choose to orient their focus to the happiness and joy that exists in the universe or the negative pain that is just as abundant. Though happiness and sadness take many different forms in the poetry, in each form, they are as abundant as they are co–dependent. Blake and Rossetti take radical steps to express how related the feelings of joy and woe are in time and space. In fact, in many places, their poetry subtly suggests that one emotion cannot occur without the other, and that no situation is complete without elements of both emotions. Blake's' first unification of the two emotions occurs in his poem, Auguries of Innocence. Though sadness and joy are not the main topic of the piece, these two emotions appear multiple times through the poem. Interestingly, they are always referred to together, as "Joy & Woe". Never in the poem does Blake ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. The Abilene Paradox Summary The Abilene Paradox was coined by Jerry B. Harvey, Professor Emeritus of Management at the George Washington University and author of "The Abilene Paradox and Other Meditations on Management". The Abilene Paradox is simple and it's explained using a parable of a family of four (parents and their daughter with her husband) in Texas who are sitting around, content, playing checkers. When the father asks who wants to go to Abilene for dinner everyone eventually agrees. Even though, they all know the hour long ride will be miserable and the food won't be worth it. Upon returning from the uncomfortable trip, everyone begins to argue. The wife never wanted to go but agreed to because she thought the father wanted to. The daughter and her husband ... • 22. The Role of a Nurse 1.1 Analyse the Role of the Nurse The complex nature of nursing means that there is no single definition that encompasses every aspect of the role of the nurse. A nurse is required to have several attributes and skills to carry out their everyday duties; they must show compassion, empathy, excellent communication skills both verbal and non–verbal. In some cases nurses are also required to become advocators for patients who are not able to communicate for themselves. A nurse is also required to be non–prejudice and understand and acknowledge other cultures and beliefs, for example some religions do not believe in blood transfusions, as a nurse it is important not to judge when faced with such a dilemma. Monitoring the level of care/service provided to patients 'and has the simultaneous purposes of enhancing the professional functioning of the junior member(s)' (Consedine, 2004, internet). 1.3 Explain a range of ethical and moral dilemmas faced by a nurse. Nurses face a wide range of ethical and moral dilemmas throughout their career. Ethical dilemmas are situations in which there are conflicting moral claims. In some of these situations people do not know what the ethically right thing to do is. They do not agree about the ethically right thing to do and often cannot find satisfactory solutions or there are two equally unsatisfactory solutions. Or they may know what the ethically right thing to do is, but do not want to act on this. Do not resuscitate is becoming an increasingly common ethical dilemma. • 24. Examples Of Moral Dilemmas 2. What are values and norms and what is a moral dilemma? To answer this question I will divide the question in three parts. Starting with what values are. Values are an absolut or relative and ethic value of a person. Values can be defined as a wide preference for specific actions. The assumption of those can be a basic form for ethic handling. A Value system is a set of consistense values and measures. A principale value is a fundamental on which values and measures of integrity are based. Some values are physiologically determined and used usually for avoiding fysical pain or for looking for fun. Other values are subjective, they are different for every individu or for different religions. These values are more based on religion and their beliefs. Different values are ethical/moral vales, ideological values, social values and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then the last part of this question, moral dilemmas. But what is a Moral dilemma?. A Moral Dilemma is that two well–known cases conflict with eachother. In each case you have moral reasons to do each of the two actions, but it is not possible to do both. This is what you call moral dilemmas. What is really a common factor for moral dilemmas is, is that it is kind of required to do both actions, in this situation you can choose one of them but you can't do both, so you start feeling that you failed, because both actions are important for you. No matter which one you will choose you always have the feeling that you failed or did something wrong. So to recap this all a Moral Dillema is a Dillema between two factors/choices that are both important to you and whatever you choose you will always think you made the wrong choice. 3.What Values and Norms does the chosen organisation ... Because they understand how things work, and that what goes around comes around. This ties directly with the down–to– earth perspective that rural Kansas offers. Just exactly what is a down–to–earth perspective? A layman definition of a down–to–earth perspective is seeing the world as it really is. You do not need to embellish it, or pretend that the world is something that it is not. With a down–to–earth perspective you see the world, and in it, you see truth. It is a second instinct of most Kanasans to develope a down–to–earth perspective, because there is earth all around us. Farmers work in and with the earth to reap a bountiful harvest. The author,Earl Lovelace, allows even the non–indigenous reader to understand, to feel the physical and psychological realities of poverty–stricken Calvary Hill – every "sweet, twisting, hurting ache"(p. 133) – more intensely , more completely, through his use of paradox. Indeed, oxymorons pepper the pages of his novel, challenging our habits of thought and provoking us into seeking another sense or context in which these self–contradictions may be resolved into truths, truths that are clearly universal yet at the same time inseparable from the combined colour and squalor of post–World War II Trinidadian life. Graduating from the physical, however, that "up–downing, drop–rising" (p. 152) of her bottom, Aldrick will come to realize that "her very desirability placed her above ordinary desiring" (p. 229), the mere ownership which Guy intends, and it is at carnival that he first glimpses the future that they might share, how he might paradoxically "lose himself and gain himself in her, swirling away with her until together they disappeared into the self that she was calling back, calling forth" (p. 141). Echoing the Indian, Pariag, and Philo the Calypsonian, Aldrick begins to desire to simply live and love and grow, which is exactly why he has always loved Sylvia: her beauty was not a weapon, but a "declaration of a faith in life and a promise of life" (p. 228). He alone realizes the paradox that Sylvia is both "illuminated and doomed by that aura"(p. 229) of inner "sainted" beauty which Guy threatens to suppress by effectively sequestering her in a new home in Diego Martin. Since no names are explicitly given, however, ambiguity surrounds the identity of the speaker and loved one. One interpretation is that the persona is Bronte herself, having lost her mother and sisters at a young age. Another interpretation is that the persona is simply a figure through which Bronte expresses the general experiences of love, loss, and memory. Despite her claims, however, in the final stanza, the speaker acknowledges the "rapturous pain" of remembering and ends the poem with a rhetorical question: "How could I seek the empty world again?" Reason and Disgust in Moral Foundations and Utilitarian Judgments Gajan Thiyagarajah (636280) PSYC20009 – Personality and Social Psychology – 2014 Abstract The current study considered the recent debate in moral psychology as to the primacy of emotion in individual moral foundations and judgments (Haidt, 2001) against previous conceptions of consciously driven reasoning processes as the major determinant in moral decisions (Turiel, 1983). The study, involving 596 undergraduate psychology students, was in part derived from the Dual Process Model (Greene, Nystrom, Engell, Darley, & Cohen, 2004) and questioned how distinct characteristics of personal and impersonal moral dilemmas appealed to emotion and reason respectively. It was suspected that the individual character trait Need For Cognition (NFC) would show positive correlation with utilitarian (i.e. harm minimising) responses for both personal and impersonal dilemmas. These hypotheses were not supported. The intuitive measure Disgust Propensity (DP) was expected to show negative correlation with utilitarian responses for the personal dilemma. It was also forecast that individuals with high levels of DP would demonstrate sensitivity to violations of the moral foundation of purity (Graham, Nosek, Haidt, Iyer, Koleva, & Ditto, 2011). These hypotheses were supported. The findings provide limited proof of the role of individual characteristics in moral activities. Further research accounting for factors such as age, ... Building strong dialogue and advocacy/inquiry skills, as well as building confidence that one will not be alienated if one speaks one's mind, are necessary for making the decision not to go to Abilene. Conclusion We need to raise individual and group consciousness about the problems of not testing early and often for consensus. We need to build strong dialogue, inquiry, and advocacy skills and learn how to use them as is situationally appropriate. And, finally, we need to learn how to avoid true loneliness by giving our thoughts and opinions voice and trusting the group with which we are working. Often taking a stand against decisions is coined as rebellious nature of individuals. But this behaviour is essential in the making of a true manager. As by going with the tide one might be instilled with feelings of regret and beat himself over it but by raising a voice it gives one the sense of satisfaction of trying and venting out what one thinks. Many a times the best of top managers are not able to see out of the box where strategies are concerned and young individuals will by human nature hesitate to give suggestions to not 'offend' superiors. Thus many a times they agree to things which are not a 100% appealing to them. This is also called Abilene Paradox. In our very daily life we may often make trips to ... • 52. How Did Frederick Douglass Benefit From His Education Throughout the works of Frederick Douglass there is a prominent contradiction referring to literacy. At times, Douglass regrets his education as it makes his slavery more difficult to tolerate. Additionally, his education opens them up to more abuse as Harriet Jacob asserts they were living in a "culture of silence" (Cutter 209). Thorough examination of Frederick Douglass' writing reveals various paradoxes within his testimony regarding his literary education; while Douglass did benefit from his education in some way, in many other ways, it shattered his spirit and lead to a lifetime of abuse. Douglass' narrative demonstrates how his literary education is both a blessing and a curse. He believed that permitting slaves to read was a contradiction, a paradox if you will, unable to render freedom, or provide them a legitimate education. Douglass reasoned that the education was a ploy to let African Americans believe they were treated fairly. Douglass expresses, "As I read and contemplated the subject, behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would follow my learning to read had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish" (Douglass 1200). This is a shocking picture and differs from most peoples' image of a creator which is what makes this poem so powerful and striking. His second idea would be that there is no order and design to life at all. If this small example of destruction was not the work of some evil force, then –so his argumentation– there can be no God or goodness leading the small things on earth. Consequently, if small things on earth are not governed by a good force, the possibility of no god or no design at all is given. But does this form of reasoning not seem a little far fetched, almost satiric? Even though Robert Frost is known for agnostic poetry, this poem obviously focuses on humanity. It is a parody of humans' everlasting curiosity and their compulsion to find a proof for a supreme being and a reason for existence on earth. He is describing a spider killing a moth while sitting on a flower and despite the fact that there is a perfectly plausible biological ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Mastering The Equivocal Paradox Essay Mastering the Equivocal Paradox This is the beginning of the end of confusion of a paradox. All, except the somber shellfish– allergenic people, can appreciate the wittiest paradox found twenty thousand leagues under the sea: the magnificent jumbo shrimp. This peculiar crustacean is one of the many forms of puzzling contradictions. There is an endless amount of self–contradicting, seemingly impossible, yet truthful statements around the world, and it is our job to justify and rationalize these arguments. Paradox is important to the development of logical systems. Without paradox, any surprise of a counter– intuitive claim or proposition would seem over our heads and forever impossible, without a solution. It is left to the brilliant minds of philosophers, artists, writers, poets, engineers, mathematicians, and countless others to challenge our cerebrum. It is the majestically roaring, frozen conundrum of M.C. Escher's "Waterfall" that contains an incongruity which, when followed, flows in the same path up the steps and down the balcony again and again. The puzzling result of this is not really a contradiction, but a valid deduction of acceptable premises. Layers of the Onion To understanding a paradox is to understand the many comparisons and definitions this enigma contains. The critical thinking implied in trying to understand the absurd proposition can seem unreal, but still expresses a possible truth. A paradox is contradictory, however a mere contradiction is nonsense ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Analysis Of Dramatic Irony In Marlowe C hristopher Marlowe has been characterized by various critics as a subjective playwright, one whose passions are reflected in the passions of his characters. Michel Poirier states that Marlowe's mind "is spurred on by a passion similar to the one he has ascribed to some of the characters in his dramas." Poirier concludes that there is a definite connection between Marlowe's temperament and ideas. His desires govern his thoughts and his passions are the basis for his philosophy. Poirier considers that egotism is at the centre of his life and works. Paul Kocher goes so far as to say that Marlowe's degree of subjectivity as a dramatist is the most important problem of all interpretation of his work. Kocher further notes that any theory of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... R. B. Sharpe defines irony as "an attitude, a temper, a spirit in which one looks at life and art. It brings to light and emphasizes by art the contradictions of living." G. G. Sedgewick gives the following definition of dramatic irony: "Dramatic irony, in brief, is the sense of contradiction felt by spectators of a drama who see a character acting in ignorance of his condition. This is dramatic irony in its concentrated and specific form: it grows ... out of that pervasive and controlling knowledge which we have called general irony and which is the property peculiar and essential to the illusion of the theatre." Sharpe's and Sedgewick's definitions of irony and dramatic irony are especially meaningful when one considers Marlowe's plays. The plays contain many contradictions of life – contradictions between what appears to be truth and what is truth, between aspiration and achievement, between speech and action. And Marlowe's characters consistently act ignorant of their conditions. In Tamburlaine, Faustus, Edward, Mortimer, Barabas, Guise, Dido, and other minor characters, Marlowe has created characters in whom every speech and action involve ironic undertones resulting from this ignorance. This irony establishes an objective position on the part of the playwright, thus, irony allowing Marlowe to maintain a detachment from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How will the program assist you in pursuing your career objectives? Since deciding to attend law school, I have sought a position at a large company where I could utilize my education and work ethic to build a career. Additionally, I have looked for an environment that would allow me to continue to develop both personally and professionally. In working as an attorney for the past two years, I have found a great interest in the field of taxation. Though approaching taxation from a legal perspective has exposed me to a variety of tax issues, I have realized that my interest lies in the numbers behind the taxes. ... In order to address the issue, I explained to the client the consequences, both legal and moral, to making false claims. I also reminded him of the philosophy that we agreed to at the start of the representation. The client said that he understood but thought that making the claim would be the only way to gain custody of his child. When I explained the other, more ethical options available, he insisted that he continue with the claim. At that point, I informed him that I would have to end my representation and that he would have to seek the assistance of another attorney. Although I was able to terminate the representation without violating any of my ethical obligations, the situation taught me some important lessons that I utilized later in my career. Primarily, I learned that potential issues could be identified early and addressed before they escalated. In this case, the requests being made by the client should have been an indication of his overall intention to conduct the divorce in an unnecessarily aggressive manner not conducive to the health of himself and his family. • 66. Literary Devices In To Kill A Mockingbird Literary devices can be mildly, or majorly, confusing, depending on personal reading level or the way they are taught, which can make all the difference. Thankfully, there are many books that can aid in understanding the pesky literary terms. Like How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster, for example. Each chapter of the book focuses on a literary device or technique that may have multiple meanings depending on the context. Therefore, this book can help readers understand more confusing pieces of literature with underlying messages such as To Kill a Mockingbird. Particularly, Foster can help readers dissect more difficult parts of the novel by Lee including violence and death, symbols, and ironies. Violence and death are limited in To Kill a Mockingbird, as there is really only one case. The case of Tom Robbinson and his trial for raping Mayella Ewell, which is none the less a bit confusing. When Bob and Mayella Ewell both come to the stand, they insist that Mayella was choked and beat on the right ride of her face, indicating someone primarily left handed would have done the crime. At first glance, a reader may wonder why that matters, but in chapter eleven of HTRLLAP, "More Than It's Gonna Hurt You: Concerning Violence," Foster points out that while violence is literal, there "is usually also something else" (Foster 95). Later in TKAM readers realize there is something else; Tom Robbinson has a maimed left arm, which as Scout explains, she could see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Force Paradox: The Irresistible Force The irresistible force paradox, also called the unstoppable force paradox or shield and spear paradox, is a classic paradox formulated as "What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?" This paradox is a form of the omnipotence paradox, which is a simple demonstration that challenges omnipotence: "Can God create a stone so heavy that not even God is strong enough to lift it?" The immovable object and the irresistible force are both implicitly assumed to be indestructible, or else the question would have a trivial resolution. Furthermore, it is assumed that they are two separate entities. The paradox arises because it rests on two incompatible premises: that there can exist simultaneously such things as irresistible forces and immovable objects. The "paradox" is flawed because if there exists an irresistible force it follows logically that there cannot be any such thing as an immovable object and vice versa.[1] Contents [hide] 1 Origins 2 Applications 3 See also 4 ... This term originates from a story (see the Kanbun example) in the 3rd century BC philosophical book Han Feizi.[2] In the story, a man was trying to sell a spear and a shield. When asked how good his spear was, he said that his spear could pierce any shield. Then, when asked how good his shield was, he said that it could defend from all spear attacks. Then one person asked him what would happen if he were to take his spear to strike his shield; the seller could not answer. This led to the idiom of "zìxīang máodùn" (自相矛盾), or "self–contradictory". Another ancient and mythological example illustrating this theme can be found in the story of the Teumessian fox, who can never be caught, and the hound Laelaps, who never misses what it hunts. • 70. THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT Essay "Butterfly Effect" was perhaps one of the best films I have ever seen. I found it mysterious, interesting and fascinating. I wanted to write my reaction paper about "Butterfly Effect" because of the similarity to the film we saw in class called "Donnie Darko". Both films investigate the issue of destiny thoroughly. Both film had a male character that has memories, dreams or black outs which make them at first confused. But later on, they realized the power they have in order to change their destiny. The main difference between those two films is their endings. While Donnie Darko has a bad ending, Butterfly effect ends more optimistic. Both Evan and we (the audience) didn't understand why his father is doing this because Evan realized his power and the reason why his father is in the hospital much later. But at the coming scenes we see that the ability to travel in time passed to Evan from his father. As I said before however at the first scenes it was hard to understand whether if the memories are real or just imaginary, then mystery disappears. His aim was to use his power to travel in time by reading his missing memories from the journal he wrote for years. This was in order to change the destiny and make everyone happy forever. But it turned out and the time travel became a chaos. Every practice of travel ended with a disaster for one of his friends or for his mother. He kept going back again and again but the things got worse. Every time he tried to put things right for one person, he destroyed another's life and even his own life. Neither he wanted to have a bad life nor did he want his family and friends to have a bad life. At the end of the film Evan finally understood that to change the destiny and put everyone's life in order is impossible. One correction causes another ruined life. • 72. Ethical Dilemmas : Ethical Dilemma INTRODUCTION "Nearly all healthcare clinicians have or will encounter ethical dilemmas during their clinical operations. Consequently most of them get not training on how to solve the situation. The clinical professionals should be trained on how to resolve ethical dilemma cases, since they are vulnerable to this kind of cases. Ethical dilemmas affect the psychological decisions one makes since they dread transgressing on other imperative moral decisions. Cases of ethical dilemmas affect almost every person regardless of their class or status in the society. Ethical dilemmas in clinical organization affect both the executives and their subjects' indifferent levels. The heads find themselves perplexed by some ethical issues in their operations, the same way their juniors would experience ethical dilemmas in their standards,"(Welch, 2001, p.1). • 74. Ethical Dilemma Paper The ethical dilemma that I intend to analyze in this paper is, whether the right to free speech and expression which fall under the broader head of individual rights should be absolute or should there be censorship over the rights for the overall harmony/good of the society? My task here is to lay out the ethical theories under which the above stated issue can be evaluated. The three main types of moral codes are Egoism, Altruism and Cynical Exploitation. This discussion will regard the egoist theory, altruism theory and cynical exploitation in evaluating the dilemma. The Egoists argue in favour of absolute individual rights with no room for any compromise. Liberty of speech and expression are an integral part of the individual rights. ... But the State Department will suggest us to respectfully refrain from publishing cartoons that offend Muslims. Radical Islamic totalitarianism is not the only threat to freedom of speech and expression. There are a lot of other factors too. To fight this threat off, we have to realize that we not only have to fight off terrorists who endanger this right, but also out own understanding of free speech and expression. We need to realize that if there is no free speech, we have no hope of a brighter and freer future. We should be willing to defend it if the need be. Well then, is the right to freedom of speech ... • 76. The Impacts of Decisions and Outcomes in Hernando Tellez’s... As human beings, it is inevitable to face moral dilemmas in life. When it comes to decision–making of a complex situation, individuals often consider their own values and consequences to their actions. Hernando Tellez's "Lather and Nothing Else" and Edith Pargeter's "The Purple Children" demonstrate the conflicts a person has with themselves when approached with a challenging situation which requires decision–making. The barber from "Lather and Nothing Else" and the sentry from "The Purple Children" demonstrate the importance of placing one's own values as a priority when making a difficult choice because it will allow the individual to make peace with the outcome. Individuals who give more worth to penalties that would put themselves at risk than those costs that do not affect them as much are more likely to be content with their decisions. For example, the temptation of murder that the Barber felt when shaving Captain Torres was overruled by the punishments that the Barber would have to encounter, "He wouldn't suffer. But what would I do with the body? Where would I hide it? I'd have to run, leaving all of this, take cover far, far away. But they would follow me until they ran into me. 'Captain Torres' murderer. He cut his throat while he was shaving him. What a coward'" (Tellez). This establishes an in–depth moral dilemma that the barber encounters when deciding to give in to his temptations or to stick to his values as a person. This conflict represents the "flood" ...
