The Voice of Billie Holiday Essay
The Voice of Billie Holiday
A woman stands before you, and although she isn't a politician, she expresses her moving thoughts
on issues that affect all Americans. Her voice isn't harsh or demanding in tone. Her stature is slender
and traced in a shimmer of light that reflects from her dress. A southern magnolia is lying
comfortably above her ear. She sings. She sings of incomprehension, of hate, and of a race's pain.
She sings low and confused. She sings as "Our Lady of Sorrow"(Davis 1), a representation of a
whole people torn and discriminated against. And though her speech is not spoken, she moves a
crowd, one that gathers into many. Billie Holiday comes to prove that one woman's voice, singing
one song, that calls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Holiday sang her emotions that could only be expressed by a minority race, but with the emotion
that the human race could understand. Holiday proved herself a "race woman," a term created for a
woman who spoke out for civil rights for the black race.
Billie Holiday was a jazz singer. Holiday was a musician of great proportion, but as a black woman
was "discriminated against even as an artist"(Davis 2). Holiday started her career as a young
woman, and was talented enough to start her career as a singer; when most black women her age
were forced into a dancing career, due to the white–male dominated entertainment industry. Holiday
sang jazz songs that varied from "My Man," a song about a man who beats her, to "Strange Fruit," a
haunting protest song about lynching in the American South. Tony Bennett once stated about
Holiday, "She didn't sing anything unless she had lived it" (Foley 1). So black fans claimed her as
their voice to willing white ears, "not only as a favorite performer but as a kind of patron saint"
(Davis 3). Holiday faced the simple obstacle of being heard. Although jazz had become a moving
genre of music in her time, and Holiday's talent was overwhelming, it was a challenge for a black
woman to be taken seriously for the messages in her songs. Black women were often praised for
being emotional and not intellectual in their musical talent.

Billie Holiday Research Paper
"No two people on earth are alike, and it's got to be that way in music or it isn't music." This little–
known quote is from none other than Billie Holiday. These words of hers serve accurately to show
that she was aware that in order to thrive in the music world, you had to be different. She was an
African–American female vocalist beginning in the 1930's. Holiday was not privileged, yet she still
managed to make an impact on the music world with her unique, almost rugged voice and
meaningful lyrics that caused her listeners to do a double take.
Billie Holiday was born on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia. Her legal name, Elinore Harris, was later
replaced with several other names, but Billie Holiday (Bill), a nickname her father had given her ...

Time and drugs added an even more gravely tone to Holiday's voice, but her vocals still come out in
a beautiful and unique way. The beat behind Holiday's vocals is no longer fast paced and upbeat. For
the majority of the recording, all that is played behind her voice is a piano, other than a few trumpet
solos. The song lyrics in "Strange Fruit" can be seen as being more artful than entertaining; this is
certainly not a song you would dance to. She graphically illustrates African–American bodies
hanging from poplar trees (lynching) with phrases like, "the bulging eyes and twisted mouth," "here
is fruit for the crows to pluck," and "the sudden smell of burning flesh." As discussed previously, she
leaves silences between phrases for the listener to digest the scenario she is producing. Jazz critic
Ralph suggests that "she was a sort of living lyric to the song 'Strange Fruit', hanging not on a poplar
tree, but on the limbs of life itself." (Gill, 2015). It is evident that she sang this song with passion
and soul. No longer did she have to play for swing bands in which she was intended to show off.
She gained the ability and reputation to sing what she felt passionate about. She grew into a vocalist
who made her own rules and had settled into her very own style. Over a century has gone by since
the birth of the legendary jazz vocalist, Billie Holiday. Holiday faced never ending adversity on her
journey, but stopped at nothing to gain stardom. Her legacy inspires other artists to sing what they
are passionate about and never give up, even if society and fate want them to. Music styles have
changed but her influence and unique style have not been

The Importance Of Festivals And Holidays On Pre Colonial...
"Another area of Nigerian life that is practically unequalled by any other country's is in the way
festivals are celebrated" (Obi 136). Festivals and holidays have made a perpetual impact on Pre–
colonial and Post–colonial Igbo culture. As time has passed over the years, additional holidays of
the Igbo culture are celebrated and traditional aspects of festival celebration have been modernized.
Furthermore, some holiday and festival celebrations have altered based on its secular and religious
aspects. During Pre–colonial Igbo culture, the foundations of festival and holiday celebration were
established with one very special festival called the "New Yam Festival" being the most important
celebrations in Igboland. According to "Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Libraries", the
"New Yam festival is celebrated between August and October in order of thanking the gods for a
good harvest and provides opportunity for a social gathering of tribes (Heritage and Culture).
Religion is exceedingly important to the Igbo's and the yam crop also known as the "king crop"
measured wealth in ancient Igbo society which is why the festival is highly significant. Based on the
book "Things Fall Apart" the most important god which tied to the festival was "Ani, the earth
goddess and the source of all fertility" (Achebe 36). If honor was not given to Ani, destruction from
weather would kill the crops which affected overall affected status of wealth. Another

The Gift Of Analytics : Ramp Up For The Holidays By...
The gift of analytics.
Ramp up for the holidays by focusing on customer analytics. With the help of data, your team can
target buyers, plan seasonal promotions, and manage your inventory levels.
Research shows that "49% of companies who champion the use of customer analytics are likely to
have profit well above their competitors." It's one of the best ways to differentiate your business in
the market.
"Customer analytics enables organizations and enterprises to make data–driven business decisions
for direct marketing, site selection, and customer relationship management. The result is a 360–
degree view of customers," says Molly Galetto, vice president of marketing communications at
NGDATA.
This holiday season aim to study your data. Let's explore how you can earn more sales.
Take an Omnichannel Approach
Holiday shoppers will discover your products from various channels, including mobile, email, and
offline activities. Prepare to serve their needs no matter how they find you.
PricewaterhouseCoopers announced that two–thirds of shoppers can be considered omnichannel
consumers. These people research products and make purchases using a combination of technology,
online platforms, and physical stores.
For instance, shoppers may see your product via a Twitter ad, and then conduct brand research on
their tablets. And finally purchase your product from their desktop computers using an email promo
code.

Argumentative Essay: Should American Holidays Get Away?
The federal national debt stands in the billions and trillions, and it is increasing by the second. In an
effort to slim down or cut some of the government spendings on employee benefits and help the
economy by providing more business days for public and private industry, Congress is considering
eliminating numerous holidays from the official observance calendar. Some argue that religious and
historical holidays are integral parts of our heritage and without official acknowledgement they will
disappear from our culture. Others argue that America is a "melting pot" with many more cultures
than are represented by our holidays, and those few holidays on the calendar are honored only select
groups of residents. Even though we are in debt and the government would save money by not
giving holiday pay, American Holidays shouldn't be eliminated from American culture because
holidays have helped develop our country and citizens work hard every year and deserve a break.
The American Government is trying to rescind our American Holidays solely for the purpose of
financial gain. The loss of billions of dollars is forcing the leaders of our country to make some
irrational decisions regarding citizens lifestyles. Taking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay Billie Holiday
Many jazz artists as we know it are quite talented. Their talents are unique in that they can translate
human emotion through singing or playing their instruments. Many have the ability to reach and
touch people's souls through their amazing gifts. Although this art of turning notes and lyrics into
emotional imagery may somewhat come natural, the audience must wonder where their influence
comes from. For Billie Holiday, her career was highly influenced by personal experience, the effects
of the Great Depression, and the racial challenges of African Americans during her time.
The Great Depression was a major historical event that affected thousands of Americans during the
1930s. It was a time in which economic decline left people without ... Show more content on

These first lines in the song portrays the longing and loneliness she felt. Further into the song she
sings, "Soft winds blowing through the pinewood trees, folks down there live a life of ease." Here,
Billie sings about life down south and refers to Baltimore where she grew up. The "soft winds
blowing through the pinewood trees" can be construed as Baltimore. "Folks down there live a life of
ease," compares the difficulties she endures in Harlem to the care free life somewhere else.
In 1933, during Billie Holiday's early years of her career, "The Depression was now underway. The
few playing gigs in the music industry were taken by whites, and blacks faced "insurmountable
odds. . . against achieving any sort of recognition without help."" (Jackson, pg. 86) Billie stopped
working as a prostitute and began singing at night clubs and speakeasies in Harlem. The New York
nightlife is where John Hammond would discover her. He introduced her to many prestigious jazz
musicians and promoted her unparallel sound. Billie Holiday played on the radio where she became
recognized as a female singer within the jazz industry. Without the help of John Hammond, Billie
may not have had a chance as a singer. "He is widely credited with having "discovered" many of
these artists, and while the use of that ambiguous word

Persuasive Essay Holidays
Thanksgiving is the holiday for family gatherings. Air travel analysts have coined it the "most
traveled holiday" of the year. People may head to the mountains or the beaches at christmas but
gathering at grandma's for that coveted feast of thanks is high on the family priority list. But not all
is as blissful as the famous Norman Rockwell portrayed. Family can equal stress, lots of stress. All
that traveling makes for weary, cranky guests. Then there is the overcrowded accommodations,
unequal division of chores and the dreadful family gossip. So many aspects of this holiday can leave
one overwhelmed and contemplating the true meaning of giving thanks.
Packing for the holidays away from home can be a chore within itself. Many things need to be taken
into consideration. One needs to be informed of the weather conditions to assure proper attire. Many
times there are also children and others in the family that need assistance with this. Also you need to
consider if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors. If your family plans a black friday shopping
trip you could find yourself in long lines out in the cold morning air. Perhaps Grandma will be
sending you out to fetch the christmas tree or assist in the delightful chore of outdoor holiday house
decorating. In any case, obviously a great deal of thought needs to go into the packing process.
Next comes the dreaded chore of carrying the luggage and family to ever pleasant airport. The day is
filled with all the wonderful

Analysis Of Strange Fruit By Billie Holiday
In strange fruit, Billie Holiday reveals part of the dreadful truth and inhuman racisim of America's
past. With great imagery and description she describes the scene of lynching taking place in
southern states. Elizabeth Blair, a producer and reporter, describes the intuition of the song by
stating "While the lyrics never mention lynching, the metaphor is painfully clear." From what I also
have read in other articles, 'Strange Fruit' quickly became famous. It became known as the "original
protest song" as Peter Daniels describes in his analysis of the record. Several artist later recored the
song as a cover, including Josh White, Abby Lincoln, and a few others. This record definitely played
a role in the civil rights movement, especially considering

Essay about Billie Holiday
Billie was born to the name, Eleanora Fagan on April 7, 1915. She was born in Philadelphia but
grew up in the Fell's Point section of Baltimore. Her mother, was just 13 at the time of her birth; her
father, was 15. Holidays' teenage parents, Sadie Harris (aka Fagan) and probable father, Clarence
Holiday, never married, and they did not live together for a long time. Clarence, a banjo and guitar
player worked with Fletcher Henderson's band in the early 30s. He remains a shady figure who left
his family. Clarence would often be away from home, and during the stay with Henderson, which
lasted until 1932, the guitarist severed connections with the Fagans. Billie was an angry chile who

She was the starving musician, the jazz singer who did all she could to stay alive and still do what
she loves. The dedication she displayed to jazz is not easy to explain. She was a perfectionist in her
fashion, depending upon her excellent ear, unique voice and honesty and love for people to keep her
love alive.
Billie Holiday spent 1934 moving up the rungs of the competitive New York bar scene. By early
1935, she made her debut at the Apollo Theater and appeared in a one–reeler film with Duke
Ellington She made her first record with Benny Goodman. In 1935, she got her big breakthrough
when she recorded four sides, which featured What a Little Moonlight Can Do, and Miss Brown to
You. She made the songs classics because of her singing ability. Her voice–quality wasn't
outstanding and her vocal range was limited, but she had an uncanny ability to breathe life into a
song, using things like pauses and slurs –– which made the song become a story or an experience,
rather than just a group of notes sang with a voice.
During 1936, Holiday toured with groups led by Jimmie Lunceford and Fletcher Henderson, then
went back to New York for several more recording sessions. In later January of 1937, she recorded
several songs with a small group from one of Hammond's newest discoveries, Count Basie's
Orchestra. Tenor Lester Young, who'd known Billie from previous engagements, and trumpeter

The Holiday Of A Holiday
Holiday Fiasco
When I was eight, my mother took me to an amusement park as part of a three–day vacation trip,
called Holiday World. A few things stand out in my memory from that day, such as my first roller–
coaster ride and the water park. It was a great day, and I had a lot of fun, but then near the end of
that day I was taught a rather important life lesson.
It was the third day of our vacation, and I had a lot of fun. We had ridden several rides such as the
Raven, a wooden roller–coaster, and around midday we were finally going to the place I wanted to
go from the beginning, the water park. The first few attractions that I noticed were of course the
very large and impressive ones, but I had already experienced a rather lengthy wait at the Raven and
wanted to have fun right then, so I focused on another rather curious attraction, a wave–pool. A
wave pool is a rather long pool, usually fifty feet in length or greater, that has a steadily declining
floor made to resemble a beach. The closer you get to the grate/fence where the device that makes
the waves exists, the deeper the pool gets ending usually around twelve to fifteen feet.
I was immediately excited, and I wanted to experience what seemed at the time the best pool ever! I
begged my mother to let us go there first, and she relented on one condition that I stay within her
sight. Now normally this wouldn't be a problem, but Holiday World was extremely busy that day,
and the wave pool

Billie Holiday Strange Fruit Meaning
It's nearly impossible to overstate the significance of "Strange Fruit", as its influence is still felt
today. Despite popular belief, the song was not written or composed by Billie Holiday, but by Lewis
Allan. It first started as a poem and then was later put to music. Abel Meeropol, pen name Lewis
Allan, was a high school English teacher at DeWitt Clinton who was involved in progressive
activism, communism, and the teachers' union. He wrote many poems and songs, yet "Strange Fruit"
was his proudest (and most famous) achievement – and for good reason. Published in 1937, the
poem was Meeropol's response to witnessing a photograph of the lynching of Thomas Sharp and
Abram Smith.
There is something to be said about the empathy between oppressed people. A Jewish American
white man wrote this protest song and was able to hand it off to an African American woman, Billie
Holiday. The film indicates that this Jewish composer and black artist relationship was vital to Jazz
at the time, yet none beforehand produced such weight as "Strange Fruit" did. This was a shocking
song, born from grotesque events, and it eventually sparked activism, becoming the anthem for the
anti–lynching movement.
At first, Billie Holiday was actually reluctant to sing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its words describe the aftermath of such a hanging, with imagery dark and vivid. The text
depersonalizes lynching victims, the same way a lynch mob would, by depicting them as strange
fruit, hanging from a poplar tree. Meeropol continues by describing blood on the leaves and roots,
which could be seen as a metaphor for the United States itself. America was built upon the slavery
of Africans, their blood, sweat, and even lives. This unjust sacrifice was the very foundation of
economic growth for the South, as in the bloody roots that supply and support the tree. Alone the
poem provides a haunting

As customers walk into Natural Grocers, one would hear the whirling sound of the door as it opens

A Holiday Essay Holiday
Holiday Essay Have you ever had to leave a party because your dad was fully ready to cause serious
bodily harm? I have. Every year we would go to two Fourth of July parties; now we go to one. I
think everyone who has celebrated the holiday has at least one memory of the time something went
haywire during Independence Day. Lots of people party on the Fourth of July and things tend to go
wrong every now and then but it does not usually stop people from partying. In our case it did
hinder the festivities. What could have happened that was so bad that we quit going? This is the
story of the time a drunk man shot fireworks at children. Fourth of July is a big holiday for many
Americans. We celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence from
England in 1776. Most people celebrate by watching firework displays or setting of some
themselves, if the weather and laws permit. America is a nation full of pyromaniacs. Who could
blame us? Fire is fun. Fire is not the only fun thing about the Fourth though. Cookouts and parties
are common, as is alcohol. Sometimes accidents happen when pyrotechnics and alcohol mix, such
as: destroyed property, like a shirt catching an ember and having a hole burned through it, fires if the
wind spends a spark dancing into a tree or some grass, missing fingers (do not hold firecrackers, I
repeat do not hold firecrackers), and burns, sometimes, even if you do everything right, something
could still go wrong. Some people find

According to Carmen McRae, her friend and an American jazz singer, Billie once burned her hair
with a curling iron, right before she performed. So Carmen quickly went out and bought some
flowers to cover up Billie's missing hair. After that, Billie wore gardenias in her hair.
Billie joined Count Basie's band around 1937. She could not read the music, but most people in the
band could not either. Most of their songs by memory.

Holiday Shopping Madness Christmas lights, inflatable snowmen, reindeer with red noses, fake
snowflakes, and decorated coffee cups, it must be the winter holidays and the new year! But wait,
Halloween was just days ago. How have haunted houses turned to gingerbread so fast, and what
happened to Thanksgiving? Holiday decorations, especially those pertaining to Christmas go up so
fast in stores and in neighborhoods sometimes as soon as a couple days after Halloween. This eye–
opening phenomenon shows just how much holidays in the United States are being used as times of
the year to make profits for businesses. Decorations for end of the year holidays can be seen in some
stores as early as September, starting with Halloween and gradually transitioning to Thanksgiving,
and then finally Christmas. The problem is that American businesses exploit holidays for profit at
the cost and expense of the individual and the individual's family. Fake and consumer centred
holidays have increased in present times leading to a rise in materialism. While this may be good for
businesses and shareholders it is extremely detrimental to society and the planet. If holidays are to
be sustainable and joyful in the future then people need to move away from consumerism holidays
and move towards celebrating these important dates with the important people in their lives. Overall
business, profit, consumerism, and materialism have adversely affected

The Christmas Holiday From The Federal Calendar
Omitting the Christmas Holiday from the Federal Calendar
The establishment of a legal holiday is best defined as a day where there are no courts, labor, and is
a day of joy and rest. While there should be a separation of church and state, Christmas is
considered a legal holiday and one needs to question the validity of establishing this day as a legal
holiday when one looks at the concept of separation of church and state and considering the
diversity we face in today's modern society.
Christmas in in fact defined as a Holyday. This should not be considered a legal holiday due to the
fact that it is Christian based and we do not have legal holidays that recognize other religions. The
United States does not have a recognized national religion, so Christmas should be separated from
legally recognized holidays.
In the American Law Register the opening paragraph gives an interesting point of view on this
matter. "Notwithstanding the distinction drawn by the great American Lexicographer, between a
holiday and a holy day, where by the latter should be used as the proper term for a religious festival,
while the former should rather denote a day of exemption for labor and of amusement, joy and
gaiety, the common impression seems to liken both the holiday and the holyday to the great weekly
day of rest and legal inaction? (Uhle 137)
With cultural diversity being what it is today, and the many different religious traditions that comes
of this, establishing a holyday as a legal

Clarence Holiday, abandoned her and her family to pursue his music dream when Holiday was still a
baby. In furtherance of take off some of the pressure for the family financially, Holiday started to
perform singing in different Harlem clubs in Brooklyn as she grew up. This little step officially
started Billie Holiday's music career. However, Blue music was "[defined] as inferior to other forms
of music" at that time, so Holiday did not get the recognition she deserved even after her death.

Billie Holiday Accomplishments
Not everyone is blessed with musical talent but when someone has an extraordinary ability, he or
she should get the chance to please others with it. Sometimes a career can be made out of musical
endowment, and that is what Billie Holiday did. Billie had a life that she may not have dreamed of
since it started out rough with her mistreatment from adults and discouraging misfortunes, but she
was ambitious and that showed through her singing career. Billie could usually adapt to her life's
problems except for her drug addiction and alcohol abuse, which unfortunately led to her demise.
She was a talented woman who sang and helped create hit songs that aided her to rise to fame. Billie
Holiday bravely stood up to racism, showed the world her talent, and inspired many of her beloved

Life is easy for few and difficult for many, especially when born to a teenage mother and father.
Billy Holiday, formally known as Eleanora Fagan, was born on April 7, 1915, to thirteen–year–old
Sadie Fagan and Clarence Holiday, who was fifteen at the time. Life began dismally for Holiday
since her father picked his own career in music over his family. He was a jazz musician who played
the banjo and guitar (Bush). School was not a priority for Holiday since she had limited schooling
and her mother would often leave her with relatives to care for her (Bush). Billie's family was poor,
and she had a life of pain, struggling, and disturbance ahead of her. As a child Holiday would help
out at a brothel by running errands for prostitutes, because in the sitting room of the brothel she
could listen to Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong music ("Billie Holiday"). She later described her
style of music as a cross between Armstrong and Smith, even though she couldn't get her voice to be

Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but spent
most of her poverty stricken childhood in Baltimore. Lady Day, as she was named by
Lester Young, had to overcome many tragedies in her lifetime and yet still became one of the most
popular jazz–blues vocalists of all time. Billie's Parents, Sally Fagan and Clarence Holiday, were
both born in Baltimore. They married as teens and soon Sally gave birth to Eleanora Fagan. Shortly
after the birth, Clarence
Holiday deserted his family to tour with Fletcher Henderson's band. Billie saw little of her

But even with the new marriage the marital and drug abuse continued. She was given a chance to be
in a movie with one of her early idols, Louis Armstrong in 1946. On top of the being disgusted at the
fact that she was stuck playing a maid, she was again feeling the effects of racism, but still she could
not pass up the chance to work with a great like Armstrong. Billie Holiday's story from 1950 on is a
gradual down slide. She was arrested several times on drug charges and was divorced then remarried
for a third time. In 1951 she met and married Louis McKay, who similar to her other two husbands,
turned out to be abusive as well.
Although her recordings, which started up again in 1952, placed her once again with all–star jazz
musicians, her voice was slipping fast. Her unhappy relationships distracted her, the heroin use and
excessive drinking continued and by 1956 she was way past her prime. Holiday's 1958 album Lady
in Satin found the 43–year old singer sounding old and worn out and the following year she
collapsed. On the summer day of July 17,1957 Billie Holiday's problems finally caught up with her.
She died at the early age of 44. Holiday rarely sang traditional blues, but her reputation rests on her
ability to transform popular songs into emotionally profound pieces. The recordings that I decided to

The seven Jews celebrate seven important holidays...
The seven Jews celebrate seven important holidays throughout the year. These holidays represent
occasions where God steered the Jews down the right path. These holidays include Shabbat, Purim,
Passover, Yom Kippur, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashana, and Shavuot. These holidays come around every
year. They all involve their own ceremonies and customs. Jews all around the world take part in the
festivities. More importantly, these holidays depict how and why people of Jewish value these
celebrations. First, the Sabbath which is a day of resting, it is an essential factor to relinquish your

Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar which was the day the Jewish people celebrated their
survival of Haman's extermination. For the cities that were walled in the time of Joshua it is
celebrated on the 15th, because in the book of Esther a wall city (Shushan) the message of the
deliverance of the extermination did not reach until the day after. The Purim holiday is followed by
a fast, the fast honors Esther's three days of fasting in preparation to be summoned by the king and
tell him Haman's plan. The commandment of the holiday is to hear the reading of the Book of
Esther. Pesach also known as Passover in English is a common Jewish holiday the permits the eating
of Chametz that has not touched water in the last 18 minutes. Chametz are the five major grains
which are wheat, rye, barley, oats and spelt. The reason for this is because when the Jewish people
left Egypt they did not have time to allow their bread to rise which is symbolism for removing the
"puffiness" or pride from our souls. The holiday is so strict that you may not own Chametz or
anything with the five grains, you may not feed it to pets and or cattle, and derive benefit from it.
People go as far ass ridding their house of chametz several weeks before Pesach, cleaning stoves,
scrubbing their fridge, and cleansing anything that has come in contact with food. Some Jewish

Holiday Spending Hangover Essay
The holiday season was designed to bring joy and excitement to the masses after a busy year of trial
and tribulations. While for many people it does just that, there is still many others who end up
creating debt problems related to the holidays. These debt problems not only put a damper on the
season to be jolly, but they also make the subsequent months and years more difficult to handle
financially.
The Holiday Spirit
For better or worse, the holiday spirit drives people to what could be considered excessive
generosity. People love to give gifts and host parties during the holidays as a means of bringing
family and friends together to perhaps make up for lost time during the year. The stores are all
dressed up in its holidays best, the holiday music is playing, and a festive atmosphere seems to

However, it doesn't stop most people from trying. The most common way people deal with any
monetary restriction is to pull out the plastic and let the credit card companies temporarily foot the
bill. In the short term, it feels good to be generous and show caring to others. It feels good all the
way up to the point the credit card bills start coming in the door. It's then that the "holiday spending
hangover" sets in and people start to see and feel the error of their ways.
Dealing With the Holiday Hangover
When you drink too much alcohol, you wake up the next day with a hangover. There isn't much you
can do about it except drink some water, take a couple of pain killers and work you way through it.
A holiday spending hangover is much the same thing. You feel bad, but there isn't much left to do
except start figuring out how to pay the associated bills. Depending on how far overboard you go,
there will be some amount of financial pain for you to endure.

Supplier power:
Porter (1980) emphasized that suppliers to an industry may be powerful if they are more
concentrated than their customers and their customers do not command a significant share of their

Billie Holiday Essay example
To understand the controversy that Billie presented one must first go to the root or source of such
controversy and examine Billie's childhood. Billie was born Eleanora Harris to her father Clarence
Holiday and mother Sadie Fagan who were just fifteen and thirteen years old, respectively, at the
time (A 91). Born between 1912 and 1915 in Baltimore, the date unsure, Billie grew up without her
father, who moved away early on in her life.
Billie and her mother used to fight a lot, when her mother was around. Much of the time Billie was
left in the care of relatives or friends, many of whom were unloving (E). Billie's relationship with
her family was very weak, as Billie throughout her life and career never or rarely got family
approval or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And on the numerous occasions when Billie's mother was out of town, she would be out having fun
without any worries.
Billie grew accustomed to using men to get money. Billie would pick up guys, pretending to be a
hooker, and then she and her friend would jump him and take his money (W 28). "She became
a fast woman. She wanted fast money, fast life" (W 26). Her life did become faster and faster
as Billie was brought further down into the truths of the world when Billie became a prostitute.
"[Billie] ran errands for a brothel in Philadelphia and in 1927 moved to New York, where for
the next three years she earned a living as a prostitute" (E). These aspects of Billie's life
molded her attitude towards life in the future, and her future decisions and goals. These influences
became her boundaries, her disposition, and in some cases, her limitations.
Educationally, Billie was deprived. Never getting beyond the fifth grade, Billie was the victim of the
educational restrictions that were imposed on many of those who dwelt in Black Ghettos (BB 67).
As Billie grew older her education became a limitation. "This woman's talent and her looks,
and yet in some ways she really had the mind of a 12–year–old" (BB 67). This lack of
education would haunt Billie later in her career, a startling reminder of her childhood, and its
definite shortcomings

The Voice Of Billie Holiday Essay

  • 1. The Voice of Billie Holiday Essay The Voice of Billie Holiday A woman stands before you, and although she isn't a politician, she expresses her moving thoughts on issues that affect all Americans. Her voice isn't harsh or demanding in tone. Her stature is slender and traced in a shimmer of light that reflects from her dress. A southern magnolia is lying comfortably above her ear. She sings. She sings of incomprehension, of hate, and of a race's pain. She sings low and confused. She sings as "Our Lady of Sorrow"(Davis 1), a representation of a whole people torn and discriminated against. And though her speech is not spoken, she moves a crowd, one that gathers into many. Billie Holiday comes to prove that one woman's voice, singing one song, that calls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holiday sang her emotions that could only be expressed by a minority race, but with the emotion that the human race could understand. Holiday proved herself a "race woman," a term created for a woman who spoke out for civil rights for the black race. Billie Holiday was a jazz singer. Holiday was a musician of great proportion, but as a black woman was "discriminated against even as an artist"(Davis 2). Holiday started her career as a young woman, and was talented enough to start her career as a singer; when most black women her age were forced into a dancing career, due to the white–male dominated entertainment industry. Holiday sang jazz songs that varied from "My Man," a song about a man who beats her, to "Strange Fruit," a haunting protest song about lynching in the American South. Tony Bennett once stated about Holiday, "She didn't sing anything unless she had lived it" (Foley 1). So black fans claimed her as their voice to willing white ears, "not only as a favorite performer but as a kind of patron saint" (Davis 3). Holiday faced the simple obstacle of being heard. Although jazz had become a moving genre of music in her time, and Holiday's talent was overwhelming, it was a challenge for a black woman to be taken seriously for the messages in her songs. Black women were often praised for being emotional and not intellectual in their musical talent. "Southern trees bear a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Billie Holiday Research Paper "No two people on earth are alike, and it's got to be that way in music or it isn't music." This little– known quote is from none other than Billie Holiday. These words of hers serve accurately to show that she was aware that in order to thrive in the music world, you had to be different. She was an African–American female vocalist beginning in the 1930's. Holiday was not privileged, yet she still managed to make an impact on the music world with her unique, almost rugged voice and meaningful lyrics that caused her listeners to do a double take. Billie Holiday was born on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia. Her legal name, Elinore Harris, was later replaced with several other names, but Billie Holiday (Bill), a nickname her father had given her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Time and drugs added an even more gravely tone to Holiday's voice, but her vocals still come out in a beautiful and unique way. The beat behind Holiday's vocals is no longer fast paced and upbeat. For the majority of the recording, all that is played behind her voice is a piano, other than a few trumpet solos. The song lyrics in "Strange Fruit" can be seen as being more artful than entertaining; this is certainly not a song you would dance to. She graphically illustrates African–American bodies hanging from poplar trees (lynching) with phrases like, "the bulging eyes and twisted mouth," "here is fruit for the crows to pluck," and "the sudden smell of burning flesh." As discussed previously, she leaves silences between phrases for the listener to digest the scenario she is producing. Jazz critic Ralph suggests that "she was a sort of living lyric to the song 'Strange Fruit', hanging not on a poplar tree, but on the limbs of life itself." (Gill, 2015). It is evident that she sang this song with passion and soul. No longer did she have to play for swing bands in which she was intended to show off. She gained the ability and reputation to sing what she felt passionate about. She grew into a vocalist who made her own rules and had settled into her very own style. Over a century has gone by since the birth of the legendary jazz vocalist, Billie Holiday. Holiday faced never ending adversity on her journey, but stopped at nothing to gain stardom. Her legacy inspires other artists to sing what they are passionate about and never give up, even if society and fate want them to. • 7. The Importance Of Festivals And Holidays On Pre Colonial... "Another area of Nigerian life that is practically unequalled by any other country's is in the way festivals are celebrated" (Obi 136). Festivals and holidays have made a perpetual impact on Pre– colonial and Post–colonial Igbo culture. As time has passed over the years, additional holidays of the Igbo culture are celebrated and traditional aspects of festival celebration have been modernized. Furthermore, some holiday and festival celebrations have altered based on its secular and religious aspects. During Pre–colonial Igbo culture, the foundations of festival and holiday celebration were established with one very special festival called the "New Yam Festival" being the most important celebrations in Igboland. According to "Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Libraries", the "New Yam festival is celebrated between August and October in order of thanking the gods for a good harvest and provides opportunity for a social gathering of tribes (Heritage and Culture). Religion is exceedingly important to the Igbo's and the yam crop also known as the "king crop" measured wealth in ancient Igbo society which is why the festival is highly significant. Based on the book "Things Fall Apart" the most important god which tied to the festival was "Ani, the earth goddess and the source of all fertility" (Achebe 36). Some argue that religious and historical holidays are integral parts of our heritage and without official acknowledgement they will disappear from our culture. Others argue that America is a "melting pot" with many more cultures than are represented by our holidays, and those few holidays on the calendar are honored only select groups of residents. Even though we are in debt and the government would save money by not giving holiday pay, American Holidays shouldn't be eliminated from American culture because holidays have helped develop our country and citizens work hard every year and deserve a break. The American Government is trying to rescind our American Holidays solely for the purpose of financial gain. The loss of billions of dollars is forcing the leaders of our country to make some irrational decisions regarding citizens lifestyles. Taking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 17. Essay Billie Holiday Many jazz artists as we know it are quite talented. Their talents are unique in that they can translate human emotion through singing or playing their instruments. Many have the ability to reach and touch people's souls through their amazing gifts. Although this art of turning notes and lyrics into emotional imagery may somewhat come natural, the audience must wonder where their influence comes from. For Billie Holiday, her career was highly influenced by personal experience, the effects of the Great Depression, and the racial challenges of African Americans during her time. The Great Depression was a major historical event that affected thousands of Americans during the 1930s. It was a time in which economic decline left people without ... Here, Billie sings about life down south and refers to Baltimore where she grew up. The "soft winds blowing through the pinewood trees" can be construed as Baltimore. "Folks down there live a life of ease," compares the difficulties she endures in Harlem to the care free life somewhere else. In 1933, during Billie Holiday's early years of her career, "The Depression was now underway. The few playing gigs in the music industry were taken by whites, and blacks faced "insurmountable odds. . . against achieving any sort of recognition without help."" (Jackson, pg. 86) Billie stopped working as a prostitute and began singing at night clubs and speakeasies in Harlem. The New York nightlife is where John Hammond would discover her. He introduced her to many prestigious jazz musicians and promoted her unparallel sound. Billie Holiday played on the radio where she became recognized as a female singer within the jazz industry. Without the help of John Hammond, Billie may not have had a chance as a singer. "He is widely credited with having "discovered" many of these artists, and while the use of that ambiguous word ... • 19. Persuasive Essay Holidays Thanksgiving is the holiday for family gatherings. Air travel analysts have coined it the "most traveled holiday" of the year. People may head to the mountains or the beaches at christmas but gathering at grandma's for that coveted feast of thanks is high on the family priority list. But not all is as blissful as the famous Norman Rockwell portrayed. Family can equal stress, lots of stress. All that traveling makes for weary, cranky guests. Then there is the overcrowded accommodations, unequal division of chores and the dreadful family gossip. So many aspects of this holiday can leave one overwhelmed and contemplating the true meaning of giving thanks. Packing for the holidays away from home can be a chore within itself. Many things need to be taken into consideration. One needs to be informed of the weather conditions to assure proper attire. Many times there are also children and others in the family that need assistance with this. Also you need to consider if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors. If your family plans a black friday shopping trip you could find yourself in long lines out in the cold morning air. Perhaps Grandma will be sending you out to fetch the christmas tree or assist in the delightful chore of outdoor holiday house decorating. In any case, obviously a great deal of thought needs to go into the packing process. Next comes the dreaded chore of carrying the luggage and family to ever pleasant airport. The day is filled with all the wonderful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With great imagery and description she describes the scene of lynching taking place in southern states. Elizabeth Blair, a producer and reporter, describes the intuition of the song by stating "While the lyrics never mention lynching, the metaphor is painfully clear." From what I also have read in other articles, 'Strange Fruit' quickly became famous. It became known as the "original protest song" as Peter Daniels describes in his analysis of the record. Several artist later recored the song as a cover, including Josh White, Abby Lincoln, and a few others. This record definitely played a role in the civil rights movement, especially considering ... Billie Holiday spent 1934 moving up the rungs of the competitive New York bar scene. By early 1935, she made her debut at the Apollo Theater and appeared in a one–reeler film with Duke Ellington She made her first record with Benny Goodman. In 1935, she got her big breakthrough when she recorded four sides, which featured What a Little Moonlight Can Do, and Miss Brown to You. She made the songs classics because of her singing ability. Her voice–quality wasn't outstanding and her vocal range was limited, but she had an uncanny ability to breathe life into a song, using things like pauses and slurs –– which made the song become a story or an experience, rather than just a group of notes sang with a voice. During 1936, Holiday toured with groups led by Jimmie Lunceford and Fletcher Henderson, then went back to New York for several more recording sessions. • 25. The Holiday Of A Holiday Holiday Fiasco When I was eight, my mother took me to an amusement park as part of a three–day vacation trip, called Holiday World. A few things stand out in my memory from that day, such as my first roller– coaster ride and the water park. It was a great day, and I had a lot of fun, but then near the end of that day I was taught a rather important life lesson. It was the third day of our vacation, and I had a lot of fun. We had ridden several rides such as the Raven, a wooden roller–coaster, and around midday we were finally going to the place I wanted to go from the beginning, the water park. The first few attractions that I noticed were of course the very large and impressive ones, but I had already experienced a rather lengthy wait at the Raven and wanted to have fun right then, so I focused on another rather curious attraction, a wave–pool. A wave pool is a rather long pool, usually fifty feet in length or greater, that has a steadily declining floor made to resemble a beach. The closer you get to the grate/fence where the device that makes the waves exists, the deeper the pool gets ending usually around twelve to fifteen feet. I was immediately excited, and I wanted to experience what seemed at the time the best pool ever! I begged my mother to let us go there first, and she relented on one condition that I stay within her sight. Now normally this wouldn't be a problem, but Holiday World was extremely busy that day, and the wave pool ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Billie Holiday Strange Fruit Meaning It's nearly impossible to overstate the significance of "Strange Fruit", as its influence is still felt today. Despite popular belief, the song was not written or composed by Billie Holiday, but by Lewis Allan. It first started as a poem and then was later put to music. Abel Meeropol, pen name Lewis Allan, was a high school English teacher at DeWitt Clinton who was involved in progressive activism, communism, and the teachers' union. He wrote many poems and songs, yet "Strange Fruit" was his proudest (and most famous) achievement – and for good reason. Published in 1937, the poem was Meeropol's response to witnessing a photograph of the lynching of Thomas Sharp and Abram Smith. There is something to be said about the empathy between oppressed people. A Jewish American white man wrote this protest song and was able to hand it off to an African American woman, Billie Holiday. The film indicates that this Jewish composer and black artist relationship was vital to Jazz at the time, yet none beforehand produced such weight as "Strange Fruit" did. This was a shocking song, born from grotesque events, and it eventually sparked activism, becoming the anthem for the anti–lynching movement. • 35. A Holiday Essay Holiday Holiday Essay Have you ever had to leave a party because your dad was fully ready to cause serious bodily harm? I have. Every year we would go to two Fourth of July parties; now we go to one. I think everyone who has celebrated the holiday has at least one memory of the time something went haywire during Independence Day. Lots of people party on the Fourth of July and things tend to go wrong every now and then but it does not usually stop people from partying. In our case it did hinder the festivities. What could have happened that was so bad that we quit going? This is the story of the time a drunk man shot fireworks at children. Fourth of July is a big holiday for many Americans. We celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence from England in 1776. Most people celebrate by watching firework displays or setting of some themselves, if the weather and laws permit. America is a nation full of pyromaniacs. Who could blame us? Fire is fun. Fire is not the only fun thing about the Fourth though. Cookouts and parties are common, as is alcohol. Sometimes accidents happen when pyrotechnics and alcohol mix, such as: destroyed property, like a shirt catching an ember and having a hole burned through it, fires if the wind spends a spark dancing into a tree or some grass, missing fingers (do not hold firecrackers, I repeat do not hold firecrackers), and burns, sometimes, even if you do everything right, something could still go wrong. The Christmas Holiday From The Federal Calendar Omitting the Christmas Holiday from the Federal Calendar The establishment of a legal holiday is best defined as a day where there are no courts, labor, and is a day of joy and rest. While there should be a separation of church and state, Christmas is considered a legal holiday and one needs to question the validity of establishing this day as a legal holiday when one looks at the concept of separation of church and state and considering the diversity we face in today's modern society. Christmas in in fact defined as a Holyday. This should not be considered a legal holiday due to the fact that it is Christian based and we do not have legal holidays that recognize other religions. The United States does not have a recognized national religion, so Christmas should be separated from legally recognized holidays. "Notwithstanding the distinction drawn by the great American Lexicographer, between a holiday and a holy day, where by the latter should be used as the proper term for a religious festival, while the former should rather denote a day of exemption for labor and of amusement, joy and gaiety, the common impression seems to liken both the holiday and the holyday to the great weekly day of rest and legal inaction? For the cities that were walled in the time of Joshua it is celebrated on the 15th, because in the book of Esther a wall city (Shushan) the message of the deliverance of the extermination did not reach until the day after. The Purim holiday is followed by a fast, the fast honors Esther's three days of fasting in preparation to be summoned by the king and tell him Haman's plan. The commandment of the holiday is to hear the reading of the Book of Esther. Pesach also known as Passover in English is a common Jewish holiday the permits the eating of Chametz that has not touched water in the last 18 minutes. Chametz are the five major grains which are wheat, rye, barley, oats and spelt. The reason for this is because when the Jewish people left Egypt they did not have time to allow their bread to rise which is symbolism for removing the "puffiness" or pride from our souls.
