Words used to describe menstrual blood and ovum
• आर्तव
• शोणिर्
• असृक्
• रज:
• रक्र्
• लोहिर्
It denotes menstrual blood & ovum at different places
– बीज – Denotes only ovum
– रुहिर पुष्प - Denotes only Menstrual blood

Other substances for which these words are used
• For secretion during coitus
– As ghee melt when in contact with fire, similarly women secrets the
आर्तव during coitus.
– According to आचार्त डल्िि
• पुराि आर्तव – Menstrual blood
• नवीन आर्तव – Less in quantity, solid and cannot come out
• For bleeding during pregnancy – Abortion
• As ovarian hormones
“ As in young aged plants, flowers or fruits does not come up, as the buds
of flower or fruits the smell is not clear, similarly in male Sukra in between
16-70 years and in female Raja and stanya before 12 and after 50 are not
visible. “ (A.Hr.Sa.1/28)

चन्र मास – 28 Days
• रज: स्राव - Menstruation -3-5 Days
• ऋर्ु काल - Proliferative phase including ovulation -12-16 Days
• ऋर्ुव्र्तर्र् काल – Post ovulatory phase - 9-13 Days
1. रज: स्राि
a) Duration of menstruation & Inter menstruation period
28 Days – All Achaaryas
• 3 Days - मासी मासी
• 5 Days - पन्च रारानुबन्न्ि च:
• 7 Days – Haritha & Bhola

b) Collection of blood in vessels of uterus for excretion

• Both dhamani collects blood for one month
• Slight black in colour
• Specific odour
• Brought down by vaayu
• Vaginal opening

नैवातर्बिु नात्र्ल्पमार्तवं शुिमाहिशेर््॥
गुन्जाफ़ल सविं च पद्मालक्र्क सन्न्नर्म ्।
इन्रगोपक सन्गाशम ् आर्तवं शुिमाहिशेर््॥

d) Mode of living during menstruation
रज: स्िला चर्ात
र्र्: पुष्पेक्षिािेव कल्र्ािाध्र्ातर्नी रर्िम ् ॥
• मृजालङ्कार रहिर्ा िर्त संस्र्र शातर्नी ।
क्षौरेर्ं र्ावकं स्र्ोकं कोष्ठ शोिन कषतिम ् ॥
पिे शरावे िस्र्े वा र्ुन्जीर् ब्रम्िचाररिी ।
चर्ुर्थेऽन्न्ि र्र्: स्नार्ा शुक्लमाल्र्ाम्बरा शुचच: ॥
• Observe Bramcharya
• Avoid Cutting of nails
• Crying
• Excessive laughing
• Excessive talking
• Should eat िपवष
• Avoid र्ीक्ष्ि, कटु, लवि आिार
• Concentrate of good and auspicious things
• Take bath on 4th Day

e) Consequences due to non avoidance of restricted acts

f) Effects of psychological status of women on 4th day of
menstruation up on the child
– इच्छन्र्ीं र्र्ृतसदृशं पुरं पश्र्ेत्पुर: पतर्म ्

– पूवं पश्र्ेर्् ऋर्ुस्नार्ा र्ादृशं नरमन्ङ्गाना ।
– र्ादृशं जनर्ेर्् पुरं र्र्ातरं िशतर्ेिर्: ॥
(A.Sa.Sha)
• Child will have similar physical, physiological characters to whom
ever the lady meet or thinks after taking her bath of 4th day of
menstruation
• During coitus If couple
• Happy– Child will have Satwik nature
• Worried – Rajasik
• Sorrowful – Thaamasik

f) Effects of coitus performed during menstruation
It affects the life span, tejas and eyesight of male partner

2. ऋतु काल
a) Duration
• ऋर्ुस्र्ु द्वािश तनशा:
(अ.हृ.श. १/२७)
o It is of 12 Days
o According to other Achaaryas it can be of 16 days also
o If yoni, Garbhasay and Artav are healthy it may be of entire
month also
Dalhana Says:-
• द्वािश रारममर्ी षोिश हिनेषु मध्र्े आध्र्ं हिन
रर्मन्न्र्मं च षोडशं र्ोनीसङ्कोचहिनं न गिनीर्म ् ॥
Out of 16 days 1st 3 days and last one day yoni is constricted. So in
b/w 12 days are counted as ऋर्ु काल and most suitable period for
conception

b) Reason for conception occurring only during ऋर्ु काल
पद्मं सङ्कोचमर्तर् हिनेऽर्ीर्े र्र्था र्र्था।
ऋर्ावर्ीर्े र्ोतन: सा शुक्रं नान्र्: प्रतर्च्छतर् ॥
(अ.हृ.श. 1/42)
As lotus flower closes after sunset, similarly after ऋर्ु काल the
र्ोतन gets constricted and does not accept शुक्रं in garbhasay
After ovulation during secretory phase, due to influence of
progesterone, cervical mucosa become hostile to sperm
C) Effect on the child conceived after ऋर्ु काल
अर्: परं र्ु उत्तरोत्तरं एव आर्ुरािीनां ह्रास: ।
Life span of child shortens gradually with the impregnation
occurring after ऋर्ु काल just like crop harvesting in wrong season.

c) Characteristic features of Ritumati women
ऋतुमतत लक्षण
पीनप्रसन्न विनं प्रन्क्लन्नात्म मुखाद्पवजाम् ।
नरकामां पप्रर्कर्थां स्रस्र् कु क्ष्र्क्षक्ष मूितजाम् ॥
स्फु रर्् र्ुज कु च श्रोणि नामर् उरु जघन न्स्फचाम् ।
िषोत्सुक्र् पराञ्चापप पवध्र्ार्् ऋर्ुमतर्ं इतर् ॥
(सु. स. श.)
Bright and healthy look
Moist mouth and teeth
Interest towards love stories and sexual relation
Pulsation of flanks, eyes and head
Twitching over arms, breasts, pelvis, umbilicus, thighs, and hip
Happy and excited mood

Ritumati is contra indicated for
• क्षार कमत
• नस्र् कमत
These procedures can cause र्ोतन शोषि
This condition can be treated with जीवनीर् गि औषि मसद्ि क्षीर
3. ऋतुव्र्ततत काल
• Except the closure or constriction of yoni, described earlier no
other physical & psychological changes are described for this
stage.
• This can be co related with secretary phase after ovulation

Other substances for which these words are used • For secretion during coitus – As ghee melt when in contact with fire, similarly women secrets the आर्तव during coitus. – According to आचार्त डल्िि • पुराि आर्तव – Menstrual blood • नवीन आर्तव – Less in quantity, solid and cannot come out • For bleeding during pregnancy – Abortion • As ovarian hormones “ As in young aged plants, flowers or fruits does not come up, as the buds of flower or fruits the smell is not clear, similarly in male Sukra in between 16-70 years and in female Raja and stanya before 12 and after 50 are not visible. “ (A.Hr.Sa.1/28) Department of PTSR, KAAMCH Udaipur 3

  • 7. ऋतु चक्र चन्र मास – 28 Days • रज: स्राव - Menstruation -3-5 Days • ऋर्ु काल - Proliferative phase including ovulation -12-16 Days • ऋर्ुव्र्तर्र् काल – Post ovulatory phase - 9-13 Days 1. रज: स्राि a) Duration of menstruation & Inter menstruation period 28 Days – All Achaaryas • 3 Days - मासी मासी • 5 Days - पन्च रारानुबन्न्ि च: • 7 Days – Haritha & Bhola Department of PTSR, KAAMCH Udaipur 7

  • 10. d) Mode of living during menstruation रज: स्िला चर्ात र्र्: पुष्पेक्षिािेव कल्र्ािाध्र्ातर्नी रर्िम ् ॥ • मृजालङ्कार रहिर्ा िर्त संस्र्र शातर्नी । क्षौरेर्ं र्ावकं स्र्ोकं कोष्ठ शोिन कषतिम ् ॥ पिे शरावे िस्र्े वा र्ुन्जीर् ब्रम्िचाररिी । चर्ुर्थेऽन्न्ि र्र्: स्नार्ा शुक्लमाल्र्ाम्बरा शुचच: ॥ • Observe Bramcharya • Avoid Cutting of nails • Crying • Excessive laughing • Excessive talking • Should eat िपवष • Avoid र्ीक्ष्ि, कटु, लवि आिार • Concentrate of good and auspicious things • Take bath on 4th Day Avoid हिवस्व प्न अन्जन अभर्ङ्ग नस्र् स्वेिन वमन Department of PTSR, KAAMCH Udaipur 10

  • 12. f) Effects of psychological status of women on 4th day of menstruation up on the child – इच्छन्र्ीं र्र्ृतसदृशं पुरं पश्र्ेत्पुर: पतर्म ् (A.Hr.Sha) – पूवं पश्र्ेर्् ऋर्ुस्नार्ा र्ादृशं नरमन्ङ्गाना । – र्ादृशं जनर्ेर्् पुरं र्र्ातरं िशतर्ेिर्: ॥ (A.Sa.Sha) • Child will have similar physical, physiological characters to whom ever the lady meet or thinks after taking her bath of 4th day of menstruation • During coitus If couple • Happy– Child will have Satwik nature • Worried – Rajasik • Sorrowful – Thaamasik Department of PTSR, KAAMCH Udaipur 12

  • 14. 2. ऋतु काल a) Duration • ऋर्ुस्र्ु द्वािश तनशा: (अ.हृ.श. १/२७) o It is of 12 Days o According to other Achaaryas it can be of 16 days also o If yoni, Garbhasay and Artav are healthy it may be of entire month also Dalhana Says:- • द्वािश रारममर्ी षोिश हिनेषु मध्र्े आध्र्ं हिन रर्मन्न्र्मं च षोडशं र्ोनीसङ्कोचहिनं न गिनीर्म ् ॥ Out of 16 days 1st 3 days and last one day yoni is constricted.   • 15. b) Reason for conception occurring only during ऋर्ु काल पद्मं सङ्कोचमर्तर् हिनेऽर्ीर्े र्र्था र्र्था। ऋर्ावर्ीर्े र्ोतन: सा शुक्रं नान्र्: प्रतर्च्छतर् ॥ (अ.हृ.श. 1/42) As lotus flower closes after sunset, similarly after ऋर्ु काल the र्ोतन gets constricted and does not accept शुक्रं in garbhasay After ovulation during secretory phase, due to influence of progesterone, cervical mucosa become hostile to sperm C) Effect on the child conceived after ऋर्ु काल अर्: परं र्ु उत्तरोत्तरं एव आर्ुरािीनां ह्रास: । Life span of child shortens gradually with the impregnation occurring after ऋर्ु काल just like crop harvesting in wrong season.   • 16. c) Characteristic features of Ritumati women ऋतुमतत लक्षण पीनप्रसन्न विनं प्रन्क्लन्नात्म मुखाद्पवजाम् । नरकामां पप्रर्कर्थां स्रस्र् कु क्ष्र्क्षक्ष मूितजाम् ॥ स्फु रर्् र्ुज कु च श्रोणि नामर् उरु जघन न्स्फचाम् । िषोत्सुक्र् पराञ्चापप पवध्र्ार्् ऋर्ुमतर्ं इतर् ॥ (सु. स. श.) Ritumati is contra indicated for • क्षार कमत • नस्र् कमत These procedures can cause र्ोतन शोषि This condition can be treated with जीवनीर् गि औषि मसद्ि क्षीर 3. ऋतुव्र्ततत काल • Except the closure or constriction of yoni, described earlier no other physical & psychological changes are described for this stage. • This can be co related with secretary phase after ovulation Department of PTSR, KAAMCH Udaipur 17
