Web research for kids From MCCE Summer Tech Summit 2014
1. Learning to Search
the Web
How to keep frustration at
bay and help kids find what
they need and want on the
web.
2. First of all - how Google
works
http://youtu.be/BNHR6IQJGZs
3. Some things to consider
Google is not case sensitive, so that is
not as important as getting the right
terms in the search box.
It also will try to correct spelling if the
words are wonky.
Pnda Google will ask
Did you mean Panda?
4. To Begin the Search
The most important part of any
search is the question you are
asking. Most people tend to be
too broad. Write out a question,
and then find the key words in
the sentence.
What do Panda Bears do to
protect their babies?
5. Cautions Before Search
Begins
Keep in mind that spacing is vital
in a search.
The Google uses spaces to
determine the characters in a
search. If you put a space
between two search terms,
Google will see those as
separate terms and will look at
each one separately.
6. First Search
If you want to search the entire term, place “ “ marks
around the phrase.
Example: “Panda Bear babies” will give that information
together where Panda Bear babies will hit on each of
those words as a phrase and separately.
Or Find a Synonym: Use offspring instead of babies.
One other help:
if you use verbatim:panda bear offspring the search will
look for exactly that term and nothing else.
7. Use terms that are often
together.
To find things that are often seen
together, use the ampersand or
underscore rather than + or
AND.
Panda&Bear Giant&Panda
Giant_panda
Location_of_Panda_reserves
8. Search for one, not both
If you want to find one or the
other piece of information, use
OR.
Winter Olympics 2018 OR
2022
9. Working with ranges
If you want to find a number
range, use the ellipsis.
American Revolution 1770…
1773
Summer Olympics 1900…
2000
10. To Find a Location
If you are looking for a location
of a particular place, use the
word you are looking for and
the city.
bakery Billings, Montana
museum Denver
Wildlife preserve China
11. To Search Effectively
If you want to leave something out
of the search, use the – sign.
Panda –restaurant
squid –Software
Find an alternative for the name.
Instead of Squid, use cephalopod
12. Use of + sign
To include something, use the +
sign.
Panda +food source
Squid +octopus
At times, the + does not work. In
those instances, you may want to use
“ “ around the words.
13. Search or exclude a single
source
To include a specific site in
your search, use
site:www.*.com before the
search words.
Giant Panda +site:www.wikipedia.org
or to exclude a site
Panda –wikipedia.com
Note: there are no spaces colon
14. Other Search Terms
News Items for search
