The computing industry has undergone a dramatic shift in the last five years. The exponential growth in the power of computer chips by doubling the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit approximately every two years, known as Moore’s Law is now replaced by an exponential growth of data. Data volumes are doubling every two years as innovative technologies such as IoT, AI, VR, AR are flooding enterprises with an endless stream of data. The amount of data created every day is estimated at 2.5 quintillion bytes.
Data is the new oil. It is just like crude. It’s valuable, but only when refined. You need to break it down and analyze it to extract value. The need to analyze this vast amount of data to extract value is being addressed using concepts such as edge computing or fog computing. However, what exactly is needed is ambient computing.
Ambient computing is the local computing surrounding on all sides – omnipresent.
The ambient computing paradigm builds upon computing available in things around us. However, these things do not work as individually smart but work together as a team. Think, massively distributed device networks around you:
* Recognizing you and your situational context
* Changing in response to you
* Anticipating your desires without conscious mediation
Ambient computing does not mean that we will not need cloud computing anymore
* The idea is to divide the workload so that processing is closer to the point of interaction
* Think of this as a method of accelerating and improving the performance of cloud computing
* Smarter partitioning of data processing between point of interaction & cloud
It will be achieved by adding intelligence and capabilities into our surroundings. The Compute will disappear around us.
You need to start exploring how you will enable ambient computing.
