4. Wärtsilä + OTG launch
sea safety training
Wärtsilä Voyage is combining its maritime smart simulation tools
with Ocean Technologies Group’s (OTG) learning and technology
solutions, to provide on-demand digital training for the maritime
industry. The partnership will deliver Wärtsilä Voyage’s Cloud
Simulation services and training catalogue through OTG’s Ocean
Learning Platform, combining a series of virtual simulation events
and digital assessments with in-person learning at maritime centers
and aboard ships. The two companies will aim to serve more than
three thousand shipping companies and training centers, and more
than a million seafarers could have access to the program globally.
The training, designed to improve maritime safety and efficiencies,
will be complemented by OTG’s virtual classroom and rapid e-learning,
providing a continuous learning journey anytime, anywhere.

Vestas invests in
bio-composite start-up

Vestas Ventures, the venture capital arm of wind turbine provider
Vestas, has invested in Swedish wood technology company
Modvion. Modvion designs and manufactures wind turbine towers
made from laminated veneer lumber (LVL), a sustainably sourced
bio-composite. In contrast to a steel turbine, the bio-composite
towers reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent due to the reduced
weight and the nature of the material’s production and supply.
The investment will help Vestas on its journey to reducing supply
chain emissions by 45% per MWh by 2030.

Doosan Mobility
is building robot
firefighters

South Korean drone company Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI)
has partnered with CITIC HIC Kaicheng Intelligence to develop
fire-fighting robots powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The robots
could be produced by the end of 2021 for sale in China and further
afield. The use of fuel cells will enable the production of lighter
robots that can operate for longer periods. The robots could also be
used for investigating disaster zones. The partnership will help DMI
move into the Chinese fuel cell equipment market long term,
following a partnership with Marineworks earlier in 2021 to develop
fuel cell drones to help ships navigate.

Siemens bring MaaS
to the Netherlands
Siemens Mobility is set to develop a national intelligent Mobility as
a Service (MaaS) platform for the Netherlands, to help providers
integrate travel planning as early as autumn 2021. The program is a
joint venture with RiVier (NS, HTM and RET) and will be delivered
by Siemens Mobility subsidiaries Hacon and eos.uptrade.
The MaaS will help integrate and coordinate different transport
options, creating a seamless journey for consumers. “We work,
learn and travel more flexibly: in time, place and choice of means
of transport,” says RET director Maurice Unck, on behalf of RiVier.
“That is why we are investing in the best travel options for
consumers right now. We lower the threshold to easily plan, book
and pay for a trip with multiple modes of transport.”

Bosch and Microsoft
collaborate on
connected cars

Bosch and Microsoft are developing a software platform on
Microsoft Azure to simplify and accelerate the deployment of
vehicle software. Using Bosch software modules, the software
can be downloaded directly to vehicle computers. A key
differentiator of the partnership will be a focus on developing
tools that increase the efficiency of the software development
process, reducing costs in the long-term and speeding up driver
access to the latest digital services. The solution will use GitHub’s
integrated enterprise platform and will be available to the first
vehicle prototypes by the end of 2021. Some vital elements of the
software will be made open source, to help best practice
proliferate in the industry.

9. Knorr-Bremse and
Deutsche Bahn share
train data

Knorr-Bremse has signed a three-year agreement with Deutsche
Bahn to analyze train operating data and vehicle subsystem data.
Deutsche Bahn will harness the data to increase vehicle availability
and optimize its vehicle maintenance cost structure, while Knorr-
Bremse plans to enhance its digital services, including condition
monitoring of onboard vehicle systems and wear prediction.
The ultimate aim is to create a condition-based maintenance system
that reduces train downtime and speeds up maintenance
operations by identifying the exact point when a rail vehicle must be
called in for maintenance.

ZF launches
automated driving
on Dongfeng Motor

The ZF coASSIST Level2 + semi-automated driving system has
launched in Dongfeng Aeolus Yixuan vehicles, bringing driver assist
technology to the affordable car space. The system is heralded as the
most affordable Level2 + system in the industry, harnessing Mobileye
camera technology and radar sensors to offer adaptive cruise control,
traffic sign recognition, lane change assistant, lane keep assistant, and
support for traffic congestion. As a semi-automated system, the driver
is always in control, but safety and convenience are significantly
increased. ZF will launch even greater autonomous functions in
Dongfeng vehicles in the next one to three years.

11. Mighty Buildings gains
$40m investment

Mighty Buildings, which uses 3D printing, robotics and
automation to build affordable, sustainable housing, has raised
$40 million in a Series B funding round led by Khosla Ventures.
Its total investment to date is now at $70 million. Mighty
Buildings has already produced and installed accessory
dwelling units (ADUs) and is now taking orders for Mighty
Houses, which will feature 3D-printed exterior shells. The
company is also set to launch the Mighty Kit System, a fiber-
reinforced material for multi-story projects. By combining
3D-printing and prefab, the start-up hopes to launch a new,
more sustainable, and affordable method of construction. With
the new investment, Mighty Buildings will expand its team and
build on its B2B platform for developers, with a long-term goal
of providing production-as-a-service to help builders and
architects scale designs.
