Future retail work will be all about building unbreakable
relationships with consumers by leveraging digital
technologies and analytics. Success will likely hinge on
personalization and customization, enabling shoppers to
curate their own experiences of the brand. To adapt,
retailers will need new organizational structures and
operating models: capability-driven, end-to-end workflows
enabled by clearly defined roles and responsibilities.

As workforce roles change, a single enterprise
workflow that clearly defines the responsibilities of
each function will be required—as well as a detailed
understanding of the new roles that need to be
created. Retailers will need to prepare existing talent
as new roles emerge. Digital literacy, data and
analytics, and end-to-end consumer experiences must
take priority in any reskilling or upskilling exercise.

The future retail workplace will be diverse and dispersed.

  • 2. 2 A retail workforce that can adapt to constant change at speed has never been more critical. Reimagine the retail workforce
  • 3. 3 Retailers need to invest proactively in the new skills, new ways of working and new workplace organization that are the foundations of a truly adaptive, future-ready workforce. Meeting the evolving expectations of both customers and employees in an unprecedented economic and social climate demands a significantly more adaptive workforce—one that is digital, data fluent and diverse. Inclusion and diversity All employees need to feel welcomed and respected, to know that their voices will be heard and their employer has bold, decisive leaders committed to inclusivity at all levels. Innovation and growth A culture of equality and diversity, where everyone feels they have a chance to advance and thrive, is also a powerful multiplier of innovation and growth. A clear indication that a purpose-driven workforce culture helps drive the business forward. Almost half of today’s workforce would take a pay cut of as much as 15% to work at an organization with an inspiring purpose. Defining apurpose- drivenculture 4 Reimagine the retail workforce
  • 5. Purpose is the foundation of the new workforce, but not enough on its own to prepare a retailer for the future. The nature of retail work, where it’s done, how and by whom will also need to be systematically reviewed, reimagined and for the most part reinvented.   • 6. 01 6 Future retail work will be all about building unbreakable relationships with consumers by leveraging digital technologies and analytics. Success will likely hinge on personalization and customization, enabling shoppers to curate their own experiences of the brand. To adapt, retailers will need new organizational structures and operating models: capability-driven, end-to-end workflows enabled by clearly defined roles and responsibilities. What is the future of work? What is your vision for the future of work? What capabilities will you need? Can your culture support new ways of working? Reimagine the retail workforce
  • 7. 02 7 As workforce roles change, a single enterprise workflow that clearly defines the responsibilities of each function will be required—as well as a detailed understanding of the new roles that need to be created. Retailers will need to prepare existing talent as new roles emerge. Digital literacy, data and analytics, and end-to-end consumer experiences must take priority in any reskilling or upskilling exercise. Who will do the work and how? Reimagine the retail workforce What new skills will you need for your workforce? How will you source the future skills ? How can you personalize the employee journey?
  • 8. 8 Companies whose people can use digital creatively are almost 3x more likely to have boosted revenue growth by at least 20% in the past three years, and more than 5x more likely to maintain these growth rates over the next three years. Reskilling in digital technologies is good for both employees and employers. Reimagine the retail workforce
  • 9. 03 9 The future retail workplace will be diverse and dispersed. Sustaining the cohesion of a purpose-driven culture remotely is a challenge, and most leaders are taking a hybrid approach. Ensuring that work is done once, done right, and done in only one place will be critical to avoid wasteful duplication—and that requires role and process clarity between employees at global headquarters and those working closest to the consumer. Where will the work be done? Reimagine the retail workforce What is your new work location strategy? Can you integrate collaborative tools? How will you maximize workforce productivity?
