7 Shocking Findings From Workfront’s 2015 State of Marketing Work Report
As enterprises grow, so do the demands on their marketing departments in terms of
productivity and communication. Too often, this pushes existing tools, processes, and
schedules to the breaking point. This year’s State of Marketing Work Report from
Workfront, the leading provider of marketing work management solutions, set out to
identify the drivers behind and the effects of this work chaos. Here are the 7 biggest
revelations from this year’s study…
Finding #1: The vast majority of marketers think highly
of their own productivity; they’re less sure about their
colleagues.
We asked marketers: “How would you rate yourself, your
manager, and your direct reports overall with regard to their
productivity?”
84% rated themselves high in productivity compared to their co-
workers, managers, leaders, and direct reports.
64% rated their managers high in productivity.
47% rated their direct reports high in productivity.
Finding #2: Cross-team conflict is more common in
marketing.
We asked marketers: “Which of the following is the most
common source of conflict with other
departments/groups/teams?”
98% experience conflict with other
departments/groups/teams
And where does this conflict come from?
Finding #3: Marketing conflict comes from poor communication and
misalignment.
40% blame conflict on poor communication
24% blame conflicting priorities
4% blame personality/cultural differences
Finding #4: Marketers don’t unplug.
We asked marketers: “During a
typical work week, how often
do you log into work/work
email before or after standard
business hours?”
89% log into work outside of
normal business hours on
weekdays
56% log in outside of business
hours every day
Finding #5: Everybody’s working on the weekend.
We also asked marketers: “How often do you log into work/work
email on the weekend?”
85% log in to work on the weekends
52% log in every weekend
Finding #6: The real marketing work begins after hours.
We asked marketers: “What are the reasons why you work outside standard
business hours?”
52% to get ahead of their work
37% because they have more work than they can complete during their standard
workday

17% to outshine their colleagues
Finding #7: Marketers are generally optimistic about their work.
We asked marketers: “Do you agree with each of the following statements?”

  • 3. Finding #1: The vast majority of marketers think highly of their own productivity; they’re less sure about their colleagues.
  • 4. We asked marketers: “How would you rate yourself, your manager, and your direct reports overall with regard to their productivity?” 84% rated themselves high in productivity compared to their co- workers, managers, leaders, and direct reports. 64% rated their managers high in productivity. 47% rated their direct reports high in productivity.
  • 5. Finding #2: Cross-team conflict is more common in marketing.
  • 6. We asked marketers: “Which of the following is the most common source of conflict with other departments/groups/teams?” 98% experience conflict with other departments/groups/teams And where does this conflict come from?
  • 7. Finding #3: Marketing conflict comes from poor communication and misalignment.

  • 14. We asked marketers: “What are the reasons why you work outside standard business hours?” 52% to get ahead of their work 37% because they have more work than they can complete during their standard workday 1/3 because their company expects it 17% to outshine their colleagues
