4. NIRUKTI (DEFINITION)
• Derived from the root ,
• ‘Ma’ means Prana or Vayu
• The ‘repha’ indicates seat
• “Marma means Seat of Vayu or Prana”.
• DEFINITION -
• The junction of mamsa, sira, snayu, asthi , and
sandhi is known as Marma. It is also known as
Pranayatana.

• Marma Theory is based on the Panchabhuta and
Tridosha theory of ayurved.
• These are Practically divided into -
1. Purva Karma
2. Pradhana Karma
3. Paschata Karma

SAMHITAS
• Marma has also included in -
1. In Sushruta Samhita SharirSthana Six Chapter i.e.
“Marma Nirdesh”.
2. Ninth chapter of the Sidhisthana of Charak
Samhita i.e. “Trimarmiyadhadhya”.
3. Astang Hridya – Mentioned just before
“Aristhalaksana” .
13. IMPORTANCE OF MARMA CHIKITSA
• To treat the diseases of Nerves and Brain.
• To treat traumatic neurological or neuro surgical
lesions, traumatic paraplegia , hemiplegia and
monoplegia etc.
• In orthopaedic lesions especially prolapsed inter
vertebral disc etc.
• To reduce the pain of nerves, muscles, ligaments,
bones and joints.
• To improve the function of body organs achieving
homeostasis.
14. CONCLUSION
• The Suchi Vedha acts like a stimulant to the prana
in the Marma Chikitsa .
• The nature of the subsequent management is
rejuvenation in most occasions.
• The potential of marma sastra is as remained
unexplored.
