3. Below are answers to some common
questions about total ankle replacement
surgery.
4. Question #1: What are some situations in
which total ankle replacement surgery would
be recommended?
Answer #1: Patients who have been
diagnosed with arthritis, or whose ankle joints
have been severely fractured, may be good
candidates for total ankle replacement
surgery. The ideal patient is one who is over
the age of 50, is of moderate build, and is
fairly active.
5. Question #2: What are the benefits of total
ankle replacement surgery?
Answer #2: The benefits include more natural
movement in the ankle joints than is possible
with fusion surgery; a variety of different
types and sizes of artificial ankle joints to fit
each individual’s needs; and improved ankle
support and stability.
6. Question #3: What happens after the
surgery?
Answer #3: Following total ankle replacement
surgery, patients will undergo rehabilitation,
including non-impact exercise such as
bicycling or water therapy. These types of
activities help to increase the range of motion
of the ankle, and improve the final outcome of
the procedure.
7. Question #3: What happens after the
