Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
Introduction
Thank you for buying this book about Near Field Communications (NFC). My goal is to
explain how it works, how you can learn to set it up and use it, and then provide some
really nifty, novel and unique ways you can start earning money with it.
You may have heard of NFC but, as far as I know, this is the first book out there that
explains how marketers can leverage it to create an edge and build a business with it.
NFC has been around a while, but until Apple implemented it in the iPhone6, it’s been a
bit of a sideshow. Ever seen those posters on public transport saying “Tap here”? That’s
NFC. One of the keys to successful advertising is having the right offer at the right time.
So imagine the power of exciting people with an offer, enticing them to tap on your tag,
and then be taken straight to your mobile squeeze page, or offer? Get them to like your
Facebook page all with a simple tap and a click. All this is possible with NFC, and if it
sounds a bit far-fetched at the moment, it won’t be soon.
To get a feel for what’s possible with NFC check out this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjq5GNiIBDY
According to Andrew Morley, CEO of Clear Channel UK (an out-of-home advertising
company):
"Both the iPhone 6's NFC mobile wallet and the new Apple watch offer huge
potential to outdoor advertisers… With current UK iPhone ownership at
approximately 26% of the market, Apple has the potential to change the
perception and raise awareness among brands, advertising agencies and
consumers of NFC and the huge potential it holds to engage audiences."
As the iPhone6 and its successors start to spread around the world, NFC will take center
stage.
NOW is the time to understand it and get in early before everyone is doing it!
Note that at present Apple is keeping its plans for NFC on the iPhone6 under wraps, but
some commentators are saying it’s only a matter of time before it will be as widespread
as Bluetooth.
So this report gives you all you need to get started.
But if, after you read all this and tried it out, you get an appetite for NFC, please check
out my follow up reports with advanced techniques and info (details on the last page)
It’s not my style to fill books with fluff – let’s crack on…

What is NFC?
Wikipedia, that most reliable of resources (ahem), tell us this:
“Near-Field (or nearfield) communication (NFC) is a set of standards for smartphones
and other mobile devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching
them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few
centimeters.”
In other words, it’s a technology for allowing smartphones* to interact with other
mobile devices.
Although there are many incarnations of NFC devices, the one I want to focus on is the
connection between a smartphone and an unpowered tag.
(*Note that not every smartphone has NFC capability. My Samsung S4 has it, and so
does the iPhone6, but older smartphones likely don’t. This is all going to change
though…)
You know what a smartphone looks like, but here’s a typical tag:
It’s mounted on self-adhesive tape and
comprises a stamped aluminium antenna
connected to a tiny chip. The whole thing
is thin and flexible and around 1” in
diameter.
Crucially, it’s unpowered and can be
programmed from your mobile phone!
Yes – no need for complicated equipment
– all you need to program one is your NFC-
capable smartphone and an app!
The other really cool thing about NFC tags
is just how inexpensive they are. Here in
the UK you can buy this kind of tag from around £0.36 each, or around 50 US cents.
OK – so now we know what a tag looks like, what can you do with it?

NFC Tags Q&A
What can be stored on a tag?
 Phone configuration information
 Website URLs
 Phone numbers
There's a range of different data types you can store on an NFC tag. Different tags have
different memory capacities but, for example, a standard tag can store a URL of 40
characters and newer ones can store many more.
The data is stored in a standard format so that it can be read by most devices.
Can an NFC tag data be changed?
Yes until it’s locked, and for most tags that’s a one-way process and the data cannot be
changed.
How are tags programmed?
The easiest way is to use an NFC-capable phone and program it with a suitable app.
There’s a growing collection of apps for Android – we’ll be using the free app TagWriter
as an example later on. If you’re using an iPhone6 you’re going to have to wait until
Apple opens up the API to developers.
Which phones support NFC?
You can find a well-maintained list here:
http://www.nfcworld.com/nfc-phones-list/
What else can I do with NFC tags?
You can use it to open a web-browser and go to a specific URL – this is the main use
addressed in this report, and increasingly you can use them to configure the settings on
your phone: like switching wifi on or off etc.
While there are plenty of cool things you can trigger with NFC, the use we’re going to
explore is that of driving traffic to specific URLs from NFC-capable phones.
There are several ways this can be monetized – we’ll look at using NFC tags for out-of-
home advertising, and also setting up offline and Fiverr gigs around this idea.
But first, let’s see how easy it is to get started with NFC tags.

Setting up and using NFC tags
For this part you will need the following:
 An NFC-capable phone. Since most of these are Androids at the moment, I’ll
assume you’re using an Android.
 A few NFC tags. Widely available – you can get a starter pack like the ones in the
picture
These tags are
made by RapidNFC
model number is
NTAG203 29mm.
There are more
robust tags that
can be attached to
keyrings, but I
recommend you
start with a simple
pack, figure out
how to use them
and then move on
to more exotic
items if you wish.
Check out the Resources section for links
Setting up the phone
There’s an increasing number of NFC apps, but I like NFC TagWriter by NXP – it’s
powerful and easy to use, and it’s free!
(1) Go to the Google Play Store and search for Tagwriter
(2) Download and install
(3) Now switch on your NFC function.
On my phone you can find it by swiping down from the top of the
screen, like this:
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 7 of 19
Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
(4) Next crank up Tagwriter – we’re ready to start writing a tag!
Writing a tag
This is so easy once you know how!
 Open up TagWriter
Click “Create, write and store”
Then, on the next screen, click “New”:
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 8 of 19
Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
On the next screen, click “Bookmark”
Then on the screen that follows click
“+ Create New Bookmark”
On the next screen, you can enter the site description if you wish but it’s not required
and then type in the URL of the page you want opened when someone taps your tag:
(“http://” is entered already so you just enter the page address without that)
Then click “Next” at the bottom of the page
We’re nearly there!
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 9 of 19
Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
On the next screen just click “Next” – no
need to do any more at this point, then
follow the instructions:
Just tap the tag, and - it’s programmed.
To check, close the app and, making sure that NFC is still switched on, on your phone,
tap the tag. The phone browser will instantly open up and connect to the URL you
designated – magic!
To change the tag, return to the home screen
and click “Tools”. You can now reset the tag by
clicking “Erase” or “Clean”.
To lock the tag, click “Permanent Protect”. You
won’t be able to change the tag after this (and
more to the point, neither will anyone else!)
I recommend you always lock the tag after
you’ve checked it.
And that’s all there is to it!

Monetising NFC Technology
The bit you’ve been itching for – how to make some money with this?
Hopefully you’ll come up with your own ideas, but I’m going to mention two main
methods:
a) Using the technology for your own out-of-home advertising
b) Providing a service for others to use the technology
Let’s start with the first method.
Out-of-home advertising with tags – “Tagvertising”
What’s that?
Well it means advertising using tags in any public or semi-public space. There are two
ways forward with this – the overt (or visible) method, and covert (or hidden) method.
Covert advertising (which means getting people to tap on your tag without them
realizing what they’re doing) is a bit sneaky and underhand and I wouldn’t recommend
it. But it’s obvious that tags could be hidden in places where people are likely to lay
down their phones, and then the tag is activated and the phone’s browser opens the
tag’s programmed URL, whatever that is.
But let’s focus on the open methods. You need a way to attract people with their
phones, which will mean a poster attracting their attention. The techniques for posters
aren’t any different to those you’d use for creating banner ads. Think of them as much
the same kind of thing. The difference is that when someone taps on the poster (at the
point where you’ve stuck your NFC tag), they’ll be taken to your offer or squeeze page,
on their mobile device, so be sure you’re using a responsive or mobile-friendly page.
This technique works well with CPA zip submit and email offers rather than those that
require a lot of form filling, or to gather people to your list.
Let’s go through it step by step:
STEP 1 – Researching your market
You start by thinking about your audience then come up with a suitable offer (not the
other way round). Where will you be placing your posters? Here are a few ideas:
 At public places where people pass by: maybe a public transportation stop or a
railing where other posters are applied. (In my city, which has a famous university,
there are thousands of posters advertising gigs and events posted on railings. It’s
accepted, provided the posters are decent, and the local authorities cast a blind eye
to them.) Just be sensitive and don’t post them where you shouldn’t.
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 11 of 19
Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
 On public notice boards – you may need permission for this. There are many, many
places: libraries, university and college buildings etc (I think NFC appeals to younger
people who generally are more clued up about technology. More on this in a
minute)
 In local businesses. You could post them, with permission, in dentist and physician
waiting rooms, or almost any local shop using the ad leverage technique explained
further down.
The most important point is that you need to be clear about your audience and what
their likely needs and interests are.
Let’s assume you’re going for the local college population. Maybe you can get your
posters posted around noticeboards on the campus. You might be able to do this
yourself, or you could hire someone at the college to do this for you for $10 or so.
Think about who is using NFC. At the moment, iPhone users can’t use NFC for this type
of application (although the technology is inside the iPhone6). So for the time being,
NFC users are going to be Android users. (But this will change…) What are Android users
like?
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 12 of 19

Civic Science, quoted in Forbes magazine
There’s lots of data out there, and you can take it with a pinch of salt but I think one fact
that supports my experience comes from the same survey quoted above: adults who
prefer Android (“Android people”) are 56% male and 44% female.
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 13 of 19
Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
Here’s another report that supports that analysis:
So the takeaway point is this: orient your NFC-based offers to males!
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 14 of 19
Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
Here’s another study:
My take, FWIW, is that, at least in the UK, “arty” people will more likely have iPhones,
whereas the “techie” types are more likely to prefer the open environment of Android.
(Why? Because Apple products generally predominate in the creative industries, and
engineering types often prefer “open” operating systems that you can play with -
Android scores heavily over Apple in this regard. I know this is a bit simplistic but there’s
more than a grain of truth in it.)
So, to set up a CPA offer at a local college here in the UK, I would focus on males of a
geeky persuasion.
What kind of offers will appeal to them? Well, I start with dating or gaming offers for
young men and post them around the science-based faculties.
(This isn’t a WSO about choosing CPA offers – there’s lots of free information out there
to explain how to get accepted to a CPA network, and how to set up offers.)
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 15 of 19

Ad leverage method
Another way to use NFC tags is to employ the “ad leverage” technique.
Basically, this involves finding a few local business whose products are complementary
and not competitive with each other. For example they could be
 A pizza restaurant
 A taxi company
 A liquor store
 A food store (not a main chain)
You will advertise them on a single webpage, alongside
your CPA offer, and ask each business to put up your
NFC poster in their premises. Each of the business
owners provides some kind of special incentive – eg a
free drink with every pizza, or 10% off everything and
your poster makes this clear: “Free and discounted
local offers – tap here!”
When a customer taps their phone, they get taken to
your mobile-friendly (very important!) webpage which
has the discount offers, and also your CPA offer
(something easy like an zip or email submit offer). If
you’re lucky, and your CPA offer is exciting enough
they’ll be filling in their zip code while they’re waiting
for their pizza!
The pitch to the business owner is that their offers will
available through tags on walls around the city (and
the more business owners you can find to sign up, the
more attractive this becomes.) You’re not asking for
money – you’re giving them free advertising, in return
for putting up one of your posters.
What’s not to like?
Once you get started with this, you’ll find tagging becomes addictive. Ultimately, if you
work at it, you’ll have your own network of tags scattered in strategic locations.
Not only is this useful for your own advertising, but you can use your network for others
to advertise on, and here’s the real power of the technique – more later…
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 16 of 19
Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
STEP 2 – Preparing your offer
There’s not much to this – you need to program your tag and affix it to a poster.
I recommend setting up a fresh website for your landing pages. Don’t worry about
domain names because the tag-tapper won’t notice the URL when they tap: any old
domain will do. You could set up a new site in a matter of a couple of minutes on
Weebly if you wish. It’s so quick and simple – and you can do a lot for free on Weebly.
You will need one page per tag, so that every tag is programmed with a unique URL. This
will allow you to offer different landing pages for different tags – important if you’re
trying to set up a local tagvertising network. With Weebly it’s simple to copy the content
of one page to another, so this doesn’t involve a lot of hassle.
Once you have your tag, then you need a poster on which to attach it. Depending on the
intended location this can be letter size or larger, down to business-card size for close-
up locations. (I’ve seen tags located above men’s urinals. I don’t recommend this
because of the dexterity required to tap the tag while – er – otherwise engaged….)
However you print your posters, you need a clear call to action: “Tap here” with the NFC
logo:
If graphic design isn’t your thing, head on over to Fiverr.com and find someone who can
do this for you – it will be $5 well spent. Then print your label out and, if it’s going to be
http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 17 of 19
Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!
used outside, it’s best to laminate it. You can pick up a simple laminator for $20 or so on
Amazon.
STEP 3 – Distribution
Getting your NFC posters out there will depend strongly on what kind of locations
you’ve chosen.
 You can take a day out and visit your target locations and get them mounted up
yourself.
 You could hire a college student for a few $$ an hour to post them on
noticeboards across the campus (making sure they take a digital photo of each
one just so you can be sure they did a good job).
 If your location owner is cooperative then you may be able to mail your poster
but I think it’s better to check out the location with your own eyeballs if possible.
 Make sure you keep a record of which posters went where. This is especially
important if you want to rent out your tagvertiser network.
Once the tags are out there it won’t be long before people are tapping your posters.
Some will do well and some won’t, just like online ads in different web properties.
IMPORTANT: if your location is likely to be
viewed by the same set of people day in,
day out, it becomes REALLY important that
you refresh the content on your landing
page regularly. If you want your tappers to
keep tapping then the content needs to be
refreshed on a daily basis if possible. You
could add short local news stories to help
make the page look different every time.
Preferably have a selection of offers that
you can cycle through so that you train your
tappers to keep coming back for something
new.
The pitch on the poster could be “Deal of
the Day” or something similar so that
tappers know they’ll be seeing new stuff on
every day.

  • 4. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! Introduction Thank you for buying this book about Near Field Communications (NFC). My goal is to explain how it works, how you can learn to set it up and use it, and then provide some really nifty, novel and unique ways you can start earning money with it. You may have heard of NFC but, as far as I know, this is the first book out there that explains how marketers can leverage it to create an edge and build a business with it. NFC has been around a while, but until Apple implemented it in the iPhone6, it’s been a bit of a sideshow. Ever seen those posters on public transport saying “Tap here”? That’s NFC. One of the keys to successful advertising is having the right offer at the right time. So imagine the power of exciting people with an offer, enticing them to tap on your tag, and then be taken straight to your mobile squeeze page, or offer? Get them to like your Facebook page all with a simple tap and a click. All this is possible with NFC, and if it sounds a bit far-fetched at the moment, it won’t be soon. To get a feel for what’s possible with NFC check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjq5GNiIBDY According to Andrew Morley, CEO of Clear Channel UK (an out-of-home advertising company): "Both the iPhone 6's NFC mobile wallet and the new Apple watch offer huge potential to outdoor advertisers… With current UK iPhone ownership at approximately 26% of the market, Apple has the potential to change the perception and raise awareness among brands, advertising agencies and consumers of NFC and the huge potential it holds to engage audiences." As the iPhone6 and its successors start to spread around the world, NFC will take center stage. NOW is the time to understand it and get in early before everyone is doing it! Note that at present Apple is keeping its plans for NFC on the iPhone6 under wraps, but some commentators are saying it’s only a matter of time before it will be as widespread as Bluetooth. So this report gives you all you need to get started. But if, after you read all this and tried it out, you get an appetite for NFC, please check out my follow up reports with advanced techniques and info (details on the last page) It’s not my style to fill books with fluff – let’s crack on… http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 4 of 19
  • 5. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! What is NFC? Wikipedia, that most reliable of resources (ahem), tell us this: “Near-Field (or nearfield) communication (NFC) is a set of standards for smartphones and other mobile devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few centimeters.” In other words, it’s a technology for allowing smartphones* to interact with other mobile devices. Although there are many incarnations of NFC devices, the one I want to focus on is the connection between a smartphone and an unpowered tag. (*Note that not every smartphone has NFC capability. My Samsung S4 has it, and so does the iPhone6, but older smartphones likely don’t. This is all going to change though…) You know what a smartphone looks like, but here’s a typical tag: It’s mounted on self-adhesive tape and comprises a stamped aluminium antenna connected to a tiny chip. The whole thing is thin and flexible and around 1” in diameter. Crucially, it’s unpowered and can be programmed from your mobile phone! Yes – no need for complicated equipment – all you need to program one is your NFC- capable smartphone and an app! The other really cool thing about NFC tags is just how inexpensive they are. Here in the UK you can buy this kind of tag from around £0.36 each, or around 50 US cents. OK – so now we know what a tag looks like, what can you do with it? http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 5 of 19
  • 6. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! NFC Tags Q&A What can be stored on a tag?  Phone configuration information  Website URLs  Phone numbers There's a range of different data types you can store on an NFC tag. Different tags have different memory capacities but, for example, a standard tag can store a URL of 40 characters and newer ones can store many more. The data is stored in a standard format so that it can be read by most devices. Can an NFC tag data be changed? Yes until it’s locked, and for most tags that’s a one-way process and the data cannot be changed. How are tags programmed? The easiest way is to use an NFC-capable phone and program it with a suitable app. There’s a growing collection of apps for Android – we’ll be using the free app TagWriter as an example later on. If you’re using an iPhone6 you’re going to have to wait until Apple opens up the API to developers. Which phones support NFC? You can find a well-maintained list here: http://www.nfcworld.com/nfc-phones-list/ What else can I do with NFC tags? You can use it to open a web-browser and go to a specific URL – this is the main use addressed in this report, and increasingly you can use them to configure the settings on your phone: like switching wifi on or off etc. While there are plenty of cool things you can trigger with NFC, the use we’re going to explore is that of driving traffic to specific URLs from NFC-capable phones. There are several ways this can be monetized – we’ll look at using NFC tags for out-of- home advertising, and also setting up offline and Fiverr gigs around this idea. But first, let’s see how easy it is to get started with NFC tags. http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 6 of 19
  • 7. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! Setting up and using NFC tags For this part you will need the following:  An NFC-capable phone. Since most of these are Androids at the moment, I’ll assume you’re using an Android.  A few NFC tags. Widely available – you can get a starter pack like the ones in the picture These tags are made by RapidNFC model number is NTAG203 29mm. There are more robust tags that can be attached to keyrings, but I recommend you start with a simple pack, figure out how to use them and then move on to more exotic items if you wish. Check out the Resources section for links Setting up the phone There’s an increasing number of NFC apps, but I like NFC TagWriter by NXP – it’s powerful and easy to use, and it’s free! (1) Go to the Google Play Store and search for Tagwriter (2) Download and install (3) Now switch on your NFC function. On my phone you can find it by swiping down from the top of the screen, like this: http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 7 of 19
  • 8. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! (4) Next crank up Tagwriter – we’re ready to start writing a tag! Writing a tag This is so easy once you know how!  Open up TagWriter Click “Create, write and store” Then, on the next screen, click “New”: http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 8 of 19
  • 9. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! On the next screen, click “Bookmark” Then on the screen that follows click “+ Create New Bookmark” On the next screen, you can enter the site description if you wish but it’s not required and then type in the URL of the page you want opened when someone taps your tag: (“http://” is entered already so you just enter the page address without that) Then click “Next” at the bottom of the page We’re nearly there! http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 9 of 19
  • 10. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! On the next screen just click “Next” – no need to do any more at this point, then follow the instructions: Just tap the tag, and - it’s programmed. To check, close the app and, making sure that NFC is still switched on, on your phone, tap the tag. The phone browser will instantly open up and connect to the URL you designated – magic! To change the tag, return to the home screen and click “Tools”. You can now reset the tag by clicking “Erase” or “Clean”. To lock the tag, click “Permanent Protect”. You won’t be able to change the tag after this (and more to the point, neither will anyone else!) I recommend you always lock the tag after you’ve checked it. And that’s all there is to it! http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 10 of 19
  • 11. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! Monetising NFC Technology The bit you’ve been itching for – how to make some money with this? Hopefully you’ll come up with your own ideas, but I’m going to mention two main methods: a) Using the technology for your own out-of-home advertising b) Providing a service for others to use the technology Let’s start with the first method. Out-of-home advertising with tags – “Tagvertising” What’s that? Well it means advertising using tags in any public or semi-public space. There are two ways forward with this – the overt (or visible) method, and covert (or hidden) method. Covert advertising (which means getting people to tap on your tag without them realizing what they’re doing) is a bit sneaky and underhand and I wouldn’t recommend it. But it’s obvious that tags could be hidden in places where people are likely to lay down their phones, and then the tag is activated and the phone’s browser opens the tag’s programmed URL, whatever that is. But let’s focus on the open methods. You need a way to attract people with their phones, which will mean a poster attracting their attention. The techniques for posters aren’t any different to those you’d use for creating banner ads. Think of them as much the same kind of thing. The difference is that when someone taps on the poster (at the point where you’ve stuck your NFC tag), they’ll be taken to your offer or squeeze page, on their mobile device, so be sure you’re using a responsive or mobile-friendly page. This technique works well with CPA zip submit and email offers rather than those that require a lot of form filling, or to gather people to your list. Let’s go through it step by step: STEP 1 – Researching your market You start by thinking about your audience then come up with a suitable offer (not the other way round). Where will you be placing your posters? Here are a few ideas:  At public places where people pass by: maybe a public transportation stop or a railing where other posters are applied. (In my city, which has a famous university, there are thousands of posters advertising gigs and events posted on railings. It’s accepted, provided the posters are decent, and the local authorities cast a blind eye to them.) Just be sensitive and don’t post them where you shouldn’t. http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 11 of 19
  • 12. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology!  On public notice boards – you may need permission for this. There are many, many places: libraries, university and college buildings etc (I think NFC appeals to younger people who generally are more clued up about technology. More on this in a minute)  In local businesses. You could post them, with permission, in dentist and physician waiting rooms, or almost any local shop using the ad leverage technique explained further down. The most important point is that you need to be clear about your audience and what their likely needs and interests are. Let’s assume you’re going for the local college population. Maybe you can get your posters posted around noticeboards on the campus. You might be able to do this yourself, or you could hire someone at the college to do this for you for $10 or so. Think about who is using NFC. At the moment, iPhone users can’t use NFC for this type of application (although the technology is inside the iPhone6). So for the time being, NFC users are going to be Android users. (But this will change…) What are Android users like? http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 12 of 19
  • 13. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! Civic Science, quoted in Forbes magazine There’s lots of data out there, and you can take it with a pinch of salt but I think one fact that supports my experience comes from the same survey quoted above: adults who prefer Android (“Android people”) are 56% male and 44% female. http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 13 of 19
  • 14. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! Here’s another report that supports that analysis: So the takeaway point is this: orient your NFC-based offers to males! http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 14 of 19
  • 15. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! Here’s another study: My take, FWIW, is that, at least in the UK, “arty” people will more likely have iPhones, whereas the “techie” types are more likely to prefer the open environment of Android. (Why? Because Apple products generally predominate in the creative industries, and engineering types often prefer “open” operating systems that you can play with - Android scores heavily over Apple in this regard. I know this is a bit simplistic but there’s more than a grain of truth in it.) So, to set up a CPA offer at a local college here in the UK, I would focus on males of a geeky persuasion. What kind of offers will appeal to them? Well, I start with dating or gaming offers for young men and post them around the science-based faculties. (This isn’t a WSO about choosing CPA offers – there’s lots of free information out there to explain how to get accepted to a CPA network, and how to set up offers.) http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 15 of 19
  • 16. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! Ad leverage method Another way to use NFC tags is to employ the “ad leverage” technique. Basically, this involves finding a few local business whose products are complementary and not competitive with each other. For example they could be  A pizza restaurant  A taxi company  A liquor store  A food store (not a main chain) You will advertise them on a single webpage, alongside your CPA offer, and ask each business to put up your NFC poster in their premises. Each of the business owners provides some kind of special incentive – eg a free drink with every pizza, or 10% off everything and your poster makes this clear: “Free and discounted local offers – tap here!” When a customer taps their phone, they get taken to your mobile-friendly (very important!) webpage which has the discount offers, and also your CPA offer (something easy like an zip or email submit offer). If you’re lucky, and your CPA offer is exciting enough they’ll be filling in their zip code while they’re waiting for their pizza! The pitch to the business owner is that their offers will available through tags on walls around the city (and the more business owners you can find to sign up, the more attractive this becomes.) You’re not asking for money – you’re giving them free advertising, in return for putting up one of your posters. What’s not to like? Once you get started with this, you’ll find tagging becomes addictive. Ultimately, if you work at it, you’ll have your own network of tags scattered in strategic locations. Not only is this useful for your own advertising, but you can use your network for others to advertise on, and here’s the real power of the technique – more later… http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 16 of 19
  • 17. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! STEP 2 – Preparing your offer There’s not much to this – you need to program your tag and affix it to a poster. I recommend setting up a fresh website for your landing pages. Don’t worry about domain names because the tag-tapper won’t notice the URL when they tap: any old domain will do. You could set up a new site in a matter of a couple of minutes on Weebly if you wish. It’s so quick and simple – and you can do a lot for free on Weebly. You will need one page per tag, so that every tag is programmed with a unique URL. This will allow you to offer different landing pages for different tags – important if you’re trying to set up a local tagvertising network. With Weebly it’s simple to copy the content of one page to another, so this doesn’t involve a lot of hassle. Once you have your tag, then you need a poster on which to attach it. Depending on the intended location this can be letter size or larger, down to business-card size for close- up locations. (I’ve seen tags located above men’s urinals. I don’t recommend this because of the dexterity required to tap the tag while – er – otherwise engaged….) However you print your posters, you need a clear call to action: “Tap here” with the NFC logo: If graphic design isn’t your thing, head on over to Fiverr.com and find someone who can do this for you – it will be $5 well spent. Then print your label out and, if it’s going to be http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 17 of 19
  • 18. Tap Into Profits – learn how to make money with NFC technology! used outside, it’s best to laminate it. You can pick up a simple laminator for $20 or so on Amazon. STEP 3 – Distribution Getting your NFC posters out there will depend strongly on what kind of locations you’ve chosen.  You can take a day out and visit your target locations and get them mounted up yourself.  You could hire a college student for a few $$ an hour to post them on noticeboards across the campus (making sure they take a digital photo of each one just so you can be sure they did a good job).  If your location owner is cooperative then you may be able to mail your poster but I think it’s better to check out the location with your own eyeballs if possible.  Make sure you keep a record of which posters went where. This is especially important if you want to rent out your tagvertiser network. Once the tags are out there it won’t be long before people are tapping your posters. Some will do well and some won’t, just like online ads in different web properties. IMPORTANT: if your location is likely to be viewed by the same set of people day in, day out, it becomes REALLY important that you refresh the content on your landing page regularly. If you want your tappers to keep tapping then the content needs to be refreshed on a daily basis if possible. You could add short local news stories to help make the page look different every time. Preferably have a selection of offers that you can cycle through so that you train your tappers to keep coming back for something new. The pitch on the poster could be “Deal of the Day” or something similar so that tappers know they’ll be seeing new stuff on every day. http://tapintoprofits.com-click.me Page 18 of 19
