                                                1
2.0 FINDINGS

2.1 Interaction between students and neighbors:

With the existence of revolutionize technology today, people from all around the
world are able to connect and socialize without barriers through social networks that
associated with the usage of Facebook, Twitter and Skype. However, in this swiftness of
globalization nowadays, human being relationships with others within approximate distance
become deteriorate from day to day. As social interactions between them is done lesser than
usual. Actually, these social interactions can be also referred as social networks and human
being is dependent for these relationships as such, human being lives within community and
need each other to be effective. So, they need to be socially aware on this matter whereby,
physical interactions are essential rather than virtual one.

Social interactions can be either formal or informal basis. By referring to this survey
viewer, as students, their formal networks are established within the university between their
lecturers, staff, and students that they always interact, work and study. For instance,
relationship between students and lecturers are limited to profession standard to be take care
off. They are basically having one-way communication with the lecturers, as they merely sit
and listen to lectures given. Conversely, students and lecturers need to engage before and
after the learning process for a splendid learning environment to be established, as this will
enhance interest and concern for other party built on.

Nevertheless, the main concern here is informal networks that are social in nature
which is the neighbor within outside environments students live on encounter on daily or
weekly basis. From survey conducted on perspective of Sidec community towards the non-
residence students, UiTM Perak, it was found that 94% Sidec community like NR students
live in their neighborhood. However, students do not realize the importance of setting up
these relationships that can be helpful in the future as the rates of communication evolved is
average. Whereby, 24% of them never speak up with each other, as shown in pie chart 1. So,
preferences on likeness does not indicate any interactions with people, and need to be remind
that relationship need to be reciprocal to be effective as they are the signatures of lives that

                                                2
are beyond the requirement need to complete task, good relationships affect rest of lives, its
bring energy to attitudes we bring home to family. Thus, students need to cultivated and
nurture their social interactions with community.

2.2 Social etiquette with neighborliness:

The effective way to communicate with people through high-touch not high-tech as
people is emotional creatures. They need to be face to face at a certain time. Supposedly, as
students, they are needed to directly engage with their neighbor as this is a platform to know
them better. Thus, students’ involvements in community services are essential to increase
circle of connections, express themselves and allow them to resolve problem encounter. In
fact, from survey as it show that 58.8% of students had involved with community services.

As students, they take care of their social etiquette with the environment including be
considerate, respectful, and compassionate towards their neighbor family and children as not
to be making fuss on others. From survey, it shows that 88.2% of Sidec community is being
neighborliness as the presence of students not disturbing their life and family which include
wife and children.

2.3 Behavior of students:

Relationship is an essential part of growth as people, teach lesson about others, and
understand yourself. With those lessons, it enables for people to strength their relation in
future, increase maturity and forgiveness towards others. For a harmonize relations, human
being need to make effort even they are busy with workload and other problems associated.
Because, social interactions are enable students to get along with others. As 10 out of 17
students tend to spend more time in university.

However, relating back to the survey conducted, even they are small portion of 35.3%
residence foreseen on negative behavior of students, but there is no single complaint being
made to the authority as applicable to access by all residence in Sidec and only 29.4% gave
advice on student about their negative behavior that inappropriate. So, from the line chart on
analysis of students’ activities and action taken, this show that residences do not feel that it is
part of their responsibility to evolved in that matters.

                                                 3
2.4 Attitudes towards gender differences:

As students, living with others community that not a part of their university, create
lots of challenges. Because, they are require to save image on their reputation as student and
also the university. Thus, students who live outside of campus need to set boundaries for
healthy relationship. This is due to no restriction to freely interact with gender differences.
They can easily communicate to each other for the reason doing assignment and other task.
Furthermore, there is no guard to make surveillance on them. So with that principle, students
outside of campus need to dictate their boundaries and provide predictability for others set
expectations and affect their perspectives towards you. So, by making up those boundaries, it
shows that you are respecting others that live within circumstances.

                                              4
3.0 CONCLUSIONS

It has been shown, that student is always accepted in the society. Where there are
universities built then there will be the assets which are the student. All of the society always
concern about the welfare of the student. Some individual may not like the existence of the
student at their area due to some reason. Perhaps, the student was a troublesome to the
society, and their existences in the societies only bring harm to them. In Sidec area, there are
no such things happen.

Neighbors are the people who live nearer. Sometime, neighbor may be helper if
necessary. In practical, it is important to know who our neighbor is. As Malaysia’s Prime
Minister stressed that integrity of Malaysian is the starting point for developing our nations in
the eye of the world. There are many ways that can be used to build the relationship between
the student and the neighbor. The awareness of living in the neighborhoods needs to be
increase. It is to ensure that the next generation is lives in neighborhood.

                                                5
4.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

4.1 Interaction between students and neighbors:

Creating spaces for interaction and dialogue can encourage neighborliness
Based on findings, it shows that almost half percentage of students didn’t have time to
interact with neighbors. Therefore, creating spaces for interaction and dialogue can encourage
neighborliness and the same time the interaction between them also can increase. For
example creating spaces like local shops, market and playground can give opportunity to
students and neighbors can spend time outside their homes. This is successful suggestion to
increase interaction between them because students and neighbors can use and enjoy their
local area to meet each others.

4.2 Social etiquette with neighborliness:

Respects
This is the most important etiquette that students must have in living with neighbor.
Based on finding, students have successful in caring their etiquette by giving a good respect
to Sidec Community through not disturbing their life and family which include wife and
children. This etiquette must be applied by every student who lives in neighborliness.
Students must always respect the neighbor’s privacy and their property. Furthermore student
also must avoid from pry into their personal affairs. In addition, if students try to borrow
something with neighbors like a cup of sugar, hammer and anything else, make sure students
return it as soon as possible to avoid from wrong perspective by neighbors.

4.3 Behavior of students:

Always keep remind students how their behavior will look to others
As neighbor, Sidec community must keep remind students how their behavior will
look to others. This is because student sometime didn’t aware their behavior will disturb the
neighbors. For example make noisy by turn loud music. This is one of bad behavior that
neighbors must complaint to them and if students refuse to listen, Sidec community have
authority to report with NR students officer. NR students officer have local authority in give

                                              6
punishment to students who give trouble problems with neighborliness. Other alternatives
Sidec community can be courteous and polite by gently ask why they are being so loud. Then
Sidec community also can give advice or suggestion in ways to solve this problem. By using
this way, students will start to aware their behavior and afraid to make problem again.

4.4 Attitudes towards gender differences:

Make students alert about the prohibition of free-mixing between men and women
Nowadays, there are many cases about students like to bring the others genders come
to their house. This is an offense and is forbidden in Islam. Sidec community must keep
advice to students and remember them this is one of illegal and forbidden in Islam. Majority
students, UiTM Perak are Muslim, so they must already know this behavior are not suitable
to them. Students are not proper to give reason they bring others genders come to house
because doing assignment and other task. This is because UiTM Perak already provides the
suitable place like one stop centre to give students meet and make discussing about their
assignment and tasks. Therefore the neighbors can report to NR student’s officer or Jabatan
Agama Islam Perak if they have seen the students try to bring other genders come to their
house.
