Soweto, beginning with ten schools signed to join the competition and having the going
green attitude. The 10 schools signed up will be showing their Green Attitude (GA) by
cleaning the schools and community around them. The areas (schools) that are the best
maintained and clean will win prizes for themselves and the school.

4. Introduction
We live in the most conscious age there has ever been. The science of economics rules
the world so what would be the cost of improving the environment? The cost is only the
effort of starting to be conservative about the environment we live in. It will only cost
time and a need to live in a healthy environment. The trend is going green and the
attitudes behind it are conserving what nature has given.
Schools not only have a large amount of people in them, they have a large amount of
people that need to be exposed to a healthy environment. Pupils in schools spend 8-to-10
hours a day at schools, some doing extra murals. These environments could influence the
health of the youth either negatively or positively. If it gets to a point of negative
influence we need to intervene.
The birth of some of the schools in South Africa stretches as far back as 30 -to-60 years
ago. As the years progress these schools experience a lot of wear and tear. This is caused
by many factors, such as the weather conditions and unfortunately the notorious
minority that vandalize them.
Schools are located in urban townships and informal settlements and are buildings that
are of great importance and positively contribute to the communities at large. Some
schools do not have the sufficient budgets to maintain their facilities; hence
organizations and the municipality need to work hand in hand to intervene. The general
concern is that some of the schools are in dilapidated states. As a result the facilities need
to be re-developed and renovated, including the use of solar energy.

5. Competition& Events
The GGP will have a number of competitions. The first will be the recycle campaign that will run from 2 May 2011 till
27 August 2011. We will then see which schools and communities can keep a clean environment.
The “a green play field” campaign will start on the 1st of September; schools will be given grass, trees, garden
equipment and some manure to maintain a green and conducive learning environment. On 17th March 2012 the
cleanest and best maintained school will stand a chance of hosting the Disease Awareness campaign. The registered
learners on our site will be able to attend the event. In February 2012, the greenest school will hold a big sports event
including hosting soccer teams from South Africa
The “A Green play field “competition will be focused on greening 480 properties. There will be 10 year duration of the
competition; the pilot period of the GGP is 2011 to 2015.

9. Recycle Campaign
SchoolMedia” Recycle” campaign
Starting in May 2011 schools that have been identified will have bins specifically for glass, steel, plastic
and paper.
Green is our colour and health and environmental wellness is our game, taking practical action
together to fight environmental distress.
Gauteng’s waste landfills are filling up and strategic solutions are coming into play. Product
packaging is the major factor to our problem, as the streets, schools and communities are bombarded
with these wasteful objects. These are not new to the average South African due to the fact that three-
fifths of the money people spend on a day-to-day basis on everyday needs is spent on packaged
products. Resulting in the disposal of bottles, cans, plastic, paper and cardboard. Some of these
packaging goods do not decay as easily as others causing the congestion at the landfills. It becomes
harder for the landfills to sort these recyclable goods when they are amongst the other cluster of
waste. As a result they are left to decay which takes a very long time causing them to pile-up and
consume space.
9
10. Facts about packaged waste
Plastic, glass and cans do not decay but they fortunately fall into the re-usable and recyclable goods category
It takes six times less energy to recycle cans, glass, plastic and paper than it does to make new ones.
This is caused by the minimal rate of recycling; the methodology of recycling has not yet been grasped by the South
African individual.
School media invention strategy
The remains of lunch tins, snack boxes and purchases of food at the tuck shop and from the surrounding community
are evidence that a lot of recyclable waste can be collected. This is the opportunity to intervene and introduce a habit of
recycling to the youth as a whole in the school environment. It is beneficial to educate and mobilize the youth about
re-using, reducing and recycling waste.
The direct strategy will be launched in schools based in Soweto. Why? Currently schools look like deserts and a
healthy conducive learning environment needs to be created. There is also the need for a financial budget that the
schools don’t have. Johannesburg is one of the fastest growing metropolis in South Africa and is the most developed.
This means we can help in contributing to the development of the city in all aspects.
The practical approach
We as SchoolMedia have been registered as waste vendors to waste management companies. Learners are then
encouraged to simply pick-it-up and use those bins. The waste collected around each school will be disposed and
sorted; these bins will be collected by the waste management companies when they are filled.
A start-up list of 10 schools in Soweto has been made, consisting of 5 primary schools and 5 high schools. The list is
attached to this document.
The motivation strategy
Teenagers are rebellious in their general nature, so as SchoolMedia we sat back and thought what strategies can be
used to motivate them to actively participate in this initiative. We then realized that they have needs, so we decided to
meet them half way on their needs.
A competition structure was then developed, including the proposal that the school that has collected the most
amount of waste in the competition time frame will be awarded with prizes.

12. “A Green Playing Field”
The project will be launched in September 2011
A number of 10 schools (Properties) which are divided between primary, high schools and community playgrounds
have been identified throughout Soweto. These areas need to be improved to functional standards. It has been
discovered that grass is needed for this development process. To create soccer, rugby, cricket and hockey fields. The
campaign is community driven utilizing citizens surrounding these areas.
Operational Strategy
We as SchoolMedia will be arranging grass from municipal and commercial organisations to be able to mobilize the
project. The grass will be used to create better sports facilities within the schools and community playgrounds for a
better learning environment.
The learners and community members are requested to volunteer as the labour force to install the grass. The
responsibilities of maintenance of the new facilities are borne by the learners, parents and teachers (community
members).
The maintenance strategy
The idea of developing the schools has been in existence for quite some time and a lot of organisations have been
giving and helping schools function better. The naked truth is that some of these schools do not maintain their new
facilities. This hinders development and the goals that need to be achieved in the community at large.
SchoolMedia will be intervening in the maintenance of these facilities. The senior RCL group will be advised to elect a
maintenance committee within their schools. This committee will consist of grade 8-to-grade 10 learners. The executive
team will consist of grade10 learners, reason being it will be easier to regulate them as opposed to matriculants who
will shift the blame on the previous matric group.
The maintenance committee will have the following responsibilities:
Cutting the grass;
Cleaning the field by picking up waste on the field; and
Watering the grass
This Campaign will fit in with the competition.
