As operators, it’s our job to monitor infrastructure, systems and applications and only wake up humans for tasks machines can’t fix on their own. Automated remediation pairs monitoring and runbook automation, giving you a monitoring system that can trigger operational actions with runbook automation to shorten incident response times and avoid alert fatigue.
Rundeck Director of Product Management Forrest Evans and Sensu Developer Advocate Todd Campbell discuss the key role automated remediation plays in the monitoring journey, with live demos of both the Rundeck and Sensu integrations. You’ll learn all about monitoring as code workflows with the Sensu Observability Pipeline and how to deliver runbook automation with Rundeck — and see how the two together can help you achieve automated remediation.

With the explosion in both complexity and quantity of
applications and digital infrastructure that teams need to
support, it’s becoming even more critical for IT teams to
invest in automation. Rundeck and Sensu have partnered to
provide plugins and integrations that connect monitoring as
code with Runbook Automation for Automated Remediation
and self-service.

Complex IT environments are driving an increased need to streamline operations and increase automation capabilities.
Rundeck is excited to partner with Sensu and add Automated Runbooks to their “Monitoring as Code” approach. We have jointly developed a number of Rundeck Plugins and a Sensu Handler to streamline integrating these two solutions.
Since invitations came from both companies let’s give a quick overview of what we do.

The word “automation” sometimes instills a bit a of anxiety when balancing that against the complicate infrastructures we mentioned at the start...
... Our advice to customers climbing the figurative mountain of Automation to employ a “Crawl Walk Run” approach. Customers should start off with low risk activities like gathering performance metrics and other key performance indicators to enhance current situational awareness. Secondary steps could be low impact, common remediation actions like clearing temp/cache files. These are often labeled as “Try this first every-time” types of activities. After those are automated teams will be able to learn which “Change Actions” (red section) have the most success and include some of those as Operator Initiated or Automated actions as well.
As with any risk based activity each business unit will have to determine risk versus reward when it comes to automating a fix.
Today we have a demo that shows a simple example of a scenario in the area 2nd from the top… Let’s walk through the demo environment we have and show everyone a bit more.
