CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, NOT EVERYONE IN NEW
YORK HAS A SUMMER HOUSE IN SOUTHAMPTON.
FURTHERMORE, SUMMER AROUND THESE PARTS IS PRETTY
RAD IF YOU CAN GET AROUND SWELTERING SUBWAYS AND
THE SMELL OF BOILING HOT GARBAGE. HERE, WE’VE
COMPILED SEVERAL SUMMER GO-TOS THROUGHOUT NEW
YORK AND NEW JERSEY TO KEEP YOU SANE WHILE BINGE
WATCHING INSTAGRAM STORIES OF YOUR FRIEND’S
VACATION IN SANTORINI.
When you think of summer, you probably think of tropical island
getaways, frozen drinks, swimming in salty water. It’s easy to forget that
despite the sweaty commutes and hustle and bustle, Manhattan is also
an island that's capable of providing you with all those things, the best
the season has to offer. With restaurants, parks, and watering holes
capable of bringing the summer sun to the big city, you don’t need a
plane ticket to get those island vibes you’re longing for.

While you can easily get your hands on a lobster roll in most parts
of Manhattan, North River Lobster Co. is the only place where you
can get a lobster roll while bobbing atop the Hudson River. The
largest floating lobster shack in NYC features fresh seafood, light
fare, mason jar cocktails, buckets of beer, and a raw bar. It’s a
laid-back, casual atmosphere with great views of Midtown, and
each lobster roll comes with a quick cruise that’s included with
price of food and drinks.

Given the nondescript entrance underneath a random handbag store in
the middle of Little Italy, it’s one of life’s great mysteries how Mulberry
Project was able to pull off one of the best backyard patios in the city
as well. It’s a hip hang with enough space to handle large parties, but
only if you get there early. It routinely fills up fast, so don’t strut in
around sunset with five friends in tow and expect to be seated
immediately. Unless you’re Barack Obama, in that case, you’re
probably going to be just fine.

At this point, we’d be concerned if you weren’t aware of Shake
Shack. But it bears repeating that there’s something special about
this particular Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, the first
location that started it all. On a nice day, you’re going to have to
stand in a lengthy queue for a Shackburger, but you won’t find a
better setting for a draft beer or glass of wine while you dive into
one of the best fast food style burgers in America.
Rooftops are a curious thing in Manhattan. On one hand, you
have access to some of the best views in the entire United
States — the New York City skyline. On the other hand, you’ll
be surrounded by 28-year-old hedge fund managers and EDM
bros who worship at the altar of Diplo. Depending on how you
roll, this may be a deal breaker. But if you can let it slide, here’s
a list of rooftops you’ll want to bookmark.

Top of the Strand sits atop the 21st floor of The Strand Hotel in

Yelp NYC's Summer Guide 2017

  • 1. N Y C & N E W J E R S E Y E D I T I O N
  • 2. CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, NOT EVERYONE IN NEW YORK HAS A SUMMER HOUSE IN SOUTHAMPTON. FURTHERMORE, SUMMER AROUND THESE PARTS IS PRETTY RAD IF YOU CAN GET AROUND SWELTERING SUBWAYS AND THE SMELL OF BOILING HOT GARBAGE. HERE, WE’VE COMPILED SEVERAL SUMMER GO-TOS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY TO KEEP YOU SANE WHILE BINGE WATCHING INSTAGRAM STORIES OF YOUR FRIEND’S VACATION IN SANTORINI.
  • 3. When you think of summer, you probably think of tropical island getaways, frozen drinks, swimming in salty water. It’s easy to forget that despite the sweaty commutes and hustle and bustle, Manhattan is also an island that's capable of providing you with all those things, the best the season has to offer. With restaurants, parks, and watering holes capable of bringing the summer sun to the big city, you don’t need a plane ticket to get those island vibes you’re longing for. MANHATTAN The Honorable William Wall Bars 385 S. End Avenue in Battery Park (212) 786-3323 willywall.com $$ Grand Banks Bars, Seafood, American (New) Pier 25 in Hudson River Park (619) 500-3344 grandbanks.org $$$
  • 4. La Marina American (New), Lounges 348 Dyckman Street/Washington Heights (212) 567-6300 lamarinanyc.com $$$ PHOTO: Yelper David F. Manhattan, NY
  • 5. North River Lobster Co. $$$ - Bars, Seafood, American (New) Pier 25 in Hudson River Park (619)500-3344 northriverlobsterco.com While you can easily get your hands on a lobster roll in most parts of Manhattan, North River Lobster Co. is the only place where you can get a lobster roll while bobbing atop the Hudson River. The largest floating lobster shack in NYC features fresh seafood, light fare, mason jar cocktails, buckets of beer, and a raw bar. It’s a laid-back, casual atmosphere with great views of Midtown, and each lobster roll comes with a quick cruise that’s included with price of food and drinks.
  • 6. The Boat Basin Café Bars, American (Traditional) W. 79th Street at Riverside Park (212) 496-5542 boatbasincafe.com $$ $$Frying Pan Bars, Landmarks & Historical Buildings Pier 66 at 26th Street in Chelsea (212) 989-6363 fryingpan.com Riverpark American (New), Breakfast & Brunch 450 E. 29th Street in Kips Bay (212) 729-9790 riverparknyc.com $$$ 6 MANHATTAN
  • 7. Pier A Harbor House $$$ - American (New), Lounges 22 Battery Place in Battery Park (212) 785-0153 piera.com PHOTO: Yelper Herm B. Irvington, NJ
  • 8. Mulberry Project $$ - Lounges 149 Mulberry Street in Little Italy (646) 448-4536 projectgroupnyc.com Given the nondescript entrance underneath a random handbag store in the middle of Little Italy, it’s one of life’s great mysteries how Mulberry Project was able to pull off one of the best backyard patios in the city as well. It’s a hip hang with enough space to handle large parties, but only if you get there early. It routinely fills up fast, so don’t strut in around sunset with five friends in tow and expect to be seated immediately. Unless you’re Barack Obama, in that case, you’re probably going to be just fine.
  • 9. Loreley $$$ - Italian 7 Rivington Street in Lower East Side (212) 253-7077 loreleynyc.com Loreley is the first of its kind Biergarten in New York City, modeled after the "Brauhaus" in Cologne. 12 imported beers with German inspiration are featured on tap, and for those who want to avoid beer bloat during the warmer months, they also feature wines from the Loreley region and a full selection of liquor.
  • 10. West End Hall Beer Gardens, American (New) 2756 Broadway in Upper West Side (212) 662-7200 westendhall.com $$ Hornblower Cruises Boat Charters, Tours Two locations: 353 West Street & Pier 17 in South Street Seaport (646) 576-8400 hornblower.com Blue Ribbon Beer Garden American (New), Breakfast & Brunch 190 Allen Street inside Sixty LES (212) 466-0404 blueribbonrestaurants.com $$ 10 MANHATTAN
  • 11. Shake Shack $$ - Bars, Seafood, American (New) 23rd and Madison inside Madison Square Park (212) 889-6600 shakeshack.com At this point, we’d be concerned if you weren’t aware of Shake Shack. But it bears repeating that there’s something special about this particular Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, the first location that started it all. On a nice day, you’re going to have to stand in a lengthy queue for a Shackburger, but you won’t find a better setting for a draft beer or glass of wine while you dive into one of the best fast food style burgers in America.
  • 12. Rooftops are a curious thing in Manhattan. On one hand, you have access to some of the best views in the entire United States — the New York City skyline. On the other hand, you’ll be surrounded by 28-year-old hedge fund managers and EDM bros who worship at the altar of Diplo. Depending on how you roll, this may be a deal breaker. But if you can let it slide, here’s a list of rooftops you’ll want to bookmark. Roof at Park South Cocktail Bars 125 E. 27th Street in Gramercy (212) 204-5222 roofatparksouth.com $$$ Gallow Green Cocktail Bars, American (New) 542 W. 27th Street in Chelsea (212) 564-1662 mckittrickhotel.com/gallow-green/ $$$ MANHATTAN
  • 13. Bar SixtyFive Cocktail Bars, American (New) 30 Rockefeller Plaza inside Rainbow Room (212) 632-5000 barsixtyfive.com $$$
  • 14. Top of the Strand $$ - Bars, Seafood, American (New) 33 W. 37th Street in Midtown (646) 368-6426 topofthestrand.com Top of the Strand sits atop the 21st floor of The Strand Hotel in Midtown, and acts as one of Manhattan’s few year-round rooftop bars. A retractable glass roof over the intimate rooftop lounge ensures four seasons of stunning views, so make a special note to visit in the winter of 2018 as well.
  • 15. The Delancey $$ - Lounges, Dance Clubs 168 Delancey Street in Lower East Side (212) 254-9920 thedelancey.com You could say the roof at The Delancey is a bit of a hidden gem. Few music venues in the city have their own elevated rooftop garden, but that’s exactly what you’ll find here at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge.
  • 16. RARE Rooftop Cocktail Bars 152 W. 26th Street in Chelsea (212) 807-7273 rarebarandgrill.com $$ $$La Birreria Italian 200 5th Avenue in Flatiron (212) 937-8910 eataly.com The Lounge at Pod 39 Hotel Lounges, Cocktail Bars 145 E. 39th Street in Murray Hill (212) 865-5700 salvationtaco.com/rooftop $$ 16 MANHATTAN
  • 17. Mr. Purple $$$ - Lounges 180 Orchard Street in Lower East Side (212) 237-1790 mrpurplenyc.com PHOTO: Yelp Elite Ruwan J. New York, NY
  • 18. The Press Lounge $$$ - Lounges 653 11th Avenue in Hells Kitchen (212) 757-2224 thepresslounge.com Former New York Times food critic Frank Bruni may have said it best when he wrote that the Press Lounge was “without question, one of the city’s most attractive rooftop bars”. Who are we to argue with a legend?
  • 19. Tavern29 $$ - Pubs, American (New) 47 E. 29th Street in Nomad (212) 685-4422 tavern29.com Rooftop bars have a tendency to be glitzy and sterile, again, relying more on sweeping views above all. The rooftop here at Tavern29 doesn’t have the skyline views, but it’s a laid-back oasis that’ll surely scratch your rooftop itch. They also boast a pretty stellar beer list.
  • 20. 230 Fifth Rooftop Cocktail Bars, American (New) 230 Fifth Avenue in Flatiron (212) 725-4300 230-fifth.com $$ Rock & Reily’s Sports Bars, American (Traditional) 218 W. 35th Street in Midtown (646) 850-2850 rockandreillysnyc.com Refinery Rooftop Lounges 63 W. 38th Street in Midtown (646) 664-0372 refineryrooftop.com $$$ 20 $$ MANHATTAN

  • 22. Aeté Rooftop $$ - Cocktail Bars 151 E. Houston Street in Lower East Side Because SIXTY LES is roughly 50 paces from The Aeté, this rooftop bar has seemingly flown under the radar. If you experience large crowds on the roof down the street, remember the Hotel East Houston for a more approachable hang. ATTAN

But it isn't all just GTL (gym, tan, laundry). Here's the real 'Situation' in Jersey: aside from some famous beaches, there are also wineries, hiking trails, skyline views, and enough eats to forget the beach-bod you worked all spring for. So ferry, kayak, or swim (although we wouldn't recommend that) across the Hudson and take in all the summer fun that the garden state has to offer.
