Health is the state of mentally and physically well
being .
According to ayurveda ,when dosa, dhatu and mala are
in sama awastha and indriya, aatma ,mann all are
working properly then the person is considered as
swastha.
For dosha dhatu and mala to be in the state of
proportionality Agni should be normal (samagni) .
(च.चच.
•When agni inside the body get extinguished then body
(shareer) is considered as dead.
•As far as agni inside the body remains in sama avastha ,
person live long without any ailment or disease.
Agni in ayurveda is reflected in the concept
of pitta of the system.
The term of pitta is derived from root ‘ति ् संतािे’ to
heat or to burn.

6. THE PLACE OF AGNI
(च.चच.१५)
The seat of agni is grahni
Grahani is named as it recieves the food
It is situated in between amashya and
pakwashaya.
•In Ayurveda pitta has been described as agni (fire)
and its main functions are:-
•Raag – (ranjak pitta)- rasa ranjan
•Pakti –(pachak pitta)- ahaar paachan
•Tejo- (alochak pitta)- darshan
•Medho-(sadhak pitta)-budhi,medh
•Ushma-(bhrajak pitta)- skin complexion
(च.चच.
•Being thus vitiated, does not digest even light food.
This undigested food becomes sour in taste and it
works like poison and it gives rise to several
diseases.
12. PHYSIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE
• Diseases are outcome of malfunctioning of the agni.
Agni not only plays vital role in absorption of macro as
well as micronutrients, but is destructive to pathogens
also.
The food that is not properly digested is referred as
“Ama" and it is nothing but a toxin responsible for array
of diseases.
• Proper functioning of digestive fire is evident from normal
tone of:
the digestive-system,
circulatory-system,
strong immunity or resistance against diseases,
proper tissue growth and body complexion.
13. ROLE OF DUSHTAAGNI IN
MENIFESTATION OF VYADHI
15. AGNI VERSUS AMA
•In Ayurveda, the theory of ‘Agni’ or biological fire,
is of prime importance. ‘Agni’ is among the critical
factors in determining optimal health and internal
homeostasis.
•On the contrary, ‘Ama’ is a toxin or pathogen,
responsible for aetiology of all diseases. Major
culprit behind ‘Ama’ production is impairment of
‘Agni’.
16. PATHOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE
•In case ‘Agni’ is not functioning properly,
One has poor digestion,
languid blood-circulation,
poor complexion,
low energy levels and
poor immunity against diseases.
•Thus promoting proper functioning of the
digestive fire is treating the root cause of the
diseases.
17. Cont.
•In a disease, vicious cycle of impaired Agni and the
production of Ama is established.
•Understanding basic relationship between Ama and
Agni is of prime importance in treating the diseases.
•Maintaining good appetite, use of digestive
stimulants and ensuring regular bowel movements
are some of the fundamental tools in enkindling the
digestive fire and preventing the production of root
cause of all diseases,i.e.- Ama.
18. METHODS OF PECIFYING AGNI
DOSHA
। (च.पव.

Excessive(fast), indigestion, over eating and irregular eating,
Inappropriate food materials
Improper administration of purgation, emetic and oleation therapies.
Emaciation as a result of diseases.
