The term cognition generally refers to the product of many integrated processes carried out by the brain
that allow humans to be aware, think, learn, judge, plan, and execute behavior (National Institutes of
Health [NIH]).
The term cognitive rehabilitation generally describes a multidisciplinary field and the application of
“therapeutic interventions designed to improve cognitive functioning and participation in activities that
may be affected by difficulties in one or more cognitive domains” (Brain InjuryAssociation of America,
n.d., p. 1).

TYPES OF MEMORY
STRATEGY
TRAINING
ASSOCIATION TECHNIQUES
One of the most common
strategies, where two or more
items to be learned are linked
or associated together.
Visual-verbal and visual
imagery have been used to
learn and recall people’s
names.
Visual imagery has been
demonstrated to assist with
the delayed recall of everyday
relevant verbal material such
as stories and appointments.
ORGANIZATIONAL TECHNIQUES
One of the most frequently
used organizational
techniques is to use the first
letter of each of a series of
words to form a single word
or pseudo-word, simplifying
the storage and retrieval of
the information represented
by that word.
Patient can also be taught to
use semantic clustering
strategies to group
information into clusters in
order to enhance encoding
and retrieval.
Example: a patient may use
verbal clustering to remember
shopping items in each
section of a grocery store. To
purchase eggs, lettuce, milk,
pancake mix, butter,
hamburger, blueberries, and
onion, the patient may use
the categories “fruits and
vegetables,” and “ingredients
to make pancakes,” as the
“clusters” of items.
