Introduction
When you go through a major trauma in life – a death in
the family, a divorce, illness, the loss of a job – it breaks down
your confidence, your dreams and your plans. Everything
disintegrates. You feel rattled to the core.
Some people stumble and fall, not quite sure how to recover,
and not caring when.
Others find the strength to keep going and to flourish. They
have a sense of possibility and move forward with incredible
inspiration and strength. They seem to be magnetic, and people
are drawn to them. They’re described as having courage and
character people want to emulate. What’s their secret?
When I went through the stages of total loss, grief and
confusion, when I felt I was losing my footing, when it felt like
life wasn’t worth living, a part of me always knew there was
more to me than all of this. Every day, as I experienced the
unsettling feeling of loss, I knew in my heart that the trauma
would not be happening if there were not a greater plan. I knew
that within me, there was a wisdom that would show me how
to hold myself together.
I had everything I needed inside me to handle my pain, a
personal guide that would show me the way to my ultimate
happiness, well-being and success. This guide was my soul, and
it knew all the details of my personal plan, the one that’s been
with me since birth, a unique place inside me where the manual
to “me” is always ready to be read.
14. xii L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
If we can truly know about this guide and our personal plan –
beyond just trusting that it’s there – then we can do more than
move forward. We can create beyond our wildest dreams.
In the rhythm of our human cycles, life’s not a straight line.
You bump into things, you lose your way, and you don’t
accomplish what you set out to do. There are all kinds of tools
to help you find your purpose and stay on the path, but they
don’t always work in the face of life’s biggest obstacles.
That’s because most of them rely on the power of the mind to
keep you focused. Unfortunately, when you lose your way, you
forget to hold that focus. We can’t depend on the mind alone.
The mind doesn’t hold our purpose and make sure we stick to it.
Your soul does. It holds your purpose for you day after day,
even when you’re too busy or too upset to notice. That’s the
radar within you. It looks at your obstacles, guides you around
them, and keeps you on track. It helps you use your success
tools more effectively, working behind the scenes to keep
pushing you forward. From time to time, your soul drops onto
your path miracles to inspire you, give you joy, and reward you
for your hard work.
Why I wrote this book
While I was writing the first book in my Stretch YourWings
and Fly Collection, Meet Your Soul: Stretch YourWings and Fly:
Connecting with Your Quantum Power, clients, friends and
acquaintances kept telling me they wanted more. Once they
learned how to connect with their soul on a daily basis, they felt a
whole new world awaited them, and they weren’t sure how to get
around in it. Is there a way, they asked, of working with my soul
to figure out what I’m supposed to be doing with my life? Can my
soul help me do that?
I thought back to the 1980s, when I was working at a yoga
15. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r xiii
and wellness ashram in the Northeast. This was a place where
people would come to get spiritually connected. The ashram
concentrated on a holistic approach to healing and growing.
For me, that meant delving into some things most people
still consider “out there”: karma and past-life work. I learned
that until you complete your past, you can’t really understand
how to move forward.
Life is much greater than we perceive it to be. Just because
your husband is your husband, that doesn’t mean you relate to
him as that. Sometimes you relate to your mate as if he were
your child, your parent, or your grandparent. When I was a
young child, my soul started to teach me the expanded roles we
play as human beings from our past and how to relate to that in
the present. It can be very confusing and disorienting.
I remember sitting in the ashramduring a puja ceremony, a
ritual that involves lighting the daily ceremonial fire and burning
incense. One woman nearme always broke out in a sweat and
became nauseated and dizzy as soon as she smelled the incense.
She initially thought she was having an allergic reaction. After
doing some past-life work, we uncovered that she’d once been
severely burned in a warehouse that contained incense, and she
couldn’t get near it. Just the smell of incense fromIndia set her
trembling. She didn’t shrink fromNative American sage or Japanese
incense, so we used those when she was around, and she was fine.
I’ve since learned techniques for releasing us from karma
without having to relive it. By working with your soul and the
souls of others, you can see the signs before you get involved in
the scenario, and release the past without re-experiencing its
pain. That’s why this particular book is important.
When I was a child, I had an imaginary friend I called Freddie.
I’ve since learned he’s the personification of my soul, and he’s with
me even today. One day I asked Freddie about whymymomkept
16. xiv L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
sitting in the corner and saying hermantra over and over again.
She was into Eastern spirituality, and she was talking about “being
present.” I asked Freddie what thatmeant, being present.
I had experiences about being present that were so awful. I
witnessed people in a level of pain I had never experienced before.
I saw people begging on the street. I was so extremely
oversensitive as a child – having five planets in cancer made me
extraordinarily sensitive to emotions and feelings – I was able to
see old people wetting their pants because they couldn’t hold it in
public, and having difficulty walking. I was just devastated.
I said to Freddie, “If this is being present, I don’t want
anything to do with it.” I was not an advocate for being
present. I equated it with pain and wondered what human
being would want to expand that experience beyond what we
go through in everyday life.
The next experience Freddie gave me was being present in
myself, as opposed to in humanity. I felt such bliss and peace,
and wave after wave of joy and happiness. All of a sudden, I
became aware of the energy moving in my body. My soul said
very clearly, “This is where you be present. In the presence of
who you are, you can reflect it into the world, and imagine how
beautiful a world it would be.”
We all embody this beauty, but we never get to experience it
until we bring ourselves into the present with mind, body and
spirit – not body, mind and emotion. It’s through that spirit
piece that I realized how to bring people into the present and
what it would mean to them. Opening themselves to their heart
and soul would change their lives.
In this book, you’ll learn clear techniques for making this
happen. You’ll learn how to take the mystery out of it all. You’ll
learn how to activate your life purpose.

How to use this book
Everyone reads books differently, and Launch Your Inner
Radar is written for people who are at various levels of soul
development.
I hope you’ll use this book to improve your life and that
you’ll give me feedback on how it helps you. The book includes:
Real-life stories – A person’s discovery and interaction with
his or her soul and how that connection changed the person’s
life. The names of the people have been changed to protect their
privacy, but the details are very real. These stories are shared to
warm your heart and open your eyes to the possibilities of what a
soul connection can mean for you, so please enjoy them.
Explanations and definitions – Each story is followed by
an in-depth explanation and definitions of concepts, tools and
techniques used by the people in the story.
How-to guidelines – The explanations are followed by easy-to-
use “how-to” sections to support you in creating a partnership
with your soul. These sections include writing exploration,
meditations, contemplation and step-by-step exercises.
Reference boxes – These contain quick tips and essential
facts. Photocopy these boxes and post them on your mirror,
bulletin board or desk for inspiration.
Advanced tools – Look for special tips, tools and exercises
to advance, accelerate, enhance and further your exploration.
Checklists – These are designed to help you determine
whether you’re ready to move on to the next chapter.
Are you new to the concept of working with your soul? You
might want to read all of the stories first to get an overview of
how soul connection can work, and then go back and try the
exercises. Or you might prefer to follow along chapter by chapter,
reading the stories and then doing the exercises in order.
18. xvi L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
Have you already made soul connection a part of your life?
Then you might look at the exercises as refreshers and just
enjoy the stories.
What you can hope to achieve
This book is about clearing the way for your inner radar to
guide you so you can live your purpose. Working with your
soul, you can do more than you’ve ever dreamed.
First, you’ll learn about your inner radar and how you can
assign your soul to direct its power to support you in creating a
magnetic future.
You’ll learn how to finish and clean up your past, getting rid of
obstacles that block your energy. You’ll begin to focus with clarity.
Then you’ll discover the advantages of using your soul to
help you clean up the past so you can create the future and live
your purpose.
This book will teach you – or remind you, if you’ve already
discovered it – how to connect with your soul and get back on
track instantly. It doesn’t have to take you weeks, months or
years to bounce back. There’s no mess too big for your soul to
clean up. Your soul doesn’t judge. It just gently steers you back
onto the road, unconditional in its desire for you to succeed and
be happy. It allows you to be whoever you are, even when you’re
a sniveling mess overwrought with confusion and frustration.
Launch Your Inner Radar is about helping you change your
life, turning you around from your patterns of self-disappointment
and negative self-chatter, replacing them with a
self-assuredness that comes from knowing the magnificent
power you hold inside you. With your soul acting as your inner
radar, there’s nothing you can’t do.

Prologue
One of my clients sent me a note about an “Aha moment”
when she discovered how the soul works in our lives. I want to
share it with you:
For almost 40 years, my ego carried me through life. It
protected me from seeing a larger picture. You see, I lived in
the “real world.” I always had an opinion from my small view
of life about anything that happened on the news or in my
personal life. I lived in fear and control, thinking it was safe.
Being in survival every day, I didn’t do too much thinking
from a higher place. I didn’t stop to consider the future or
how life really works, with its positive and negative polarities
in actual harmony. My limited thinking didn’t let me see the
whole picture of a situation and how we’re just visitors to this
Planet Earth.
I didn’t connect life and death with cyclical experiences
on Earth, such as seasons. I’d heard it was the case, but I
didn’t know it. I was not able to see beyond the loss.
In that “real world,” we only have one life. Death is bad
because it’s final. I never thought we had any choice. And I
certainly didn’t know how to celebrate a life after death
through the pain of grief.
The heart connects us to wisdom, and it takes grief to
open it – that is, if we can get through the grief.
A natural occurrence opened my perceptions of life, and
then I was able to expand the thoughts to being human and
20. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
the experience of it. Certainly if I were a farmer, I would’ve
thought more soulfully about life sooner because farmers are
in touch with nature every day.
Fires raged in the Western states for months during that
summer. This was not the first time I’d heard reports of forest
fires. But it was the first time I was so aware that this was
occurring for so long a time and the losses were so great. As I
went to work, did my chores, and watched television in the
evening, I could hear the reports of forest fires destroying
large quantities of trees that would be lost forever. Some of the
fires were started by electrical storms or just the heat of the
summer. Others were reported to have been carelessly ignited
by campers.
We ate dinner with radio or television on, and I would
hear the same things over and over. I became so aware of the
fires, it began to irritate me almost to tears. I found myself
mourning the loss of the forests and disliking the careless
people who might have started the fires.
In September of that year, I watched a television show
about forests. Fires had been put out and some fizzled out
themselves. The commentator spoke of how old the trees were
in the forests, and said trees have a life span. About every 200
years or so, fires break out and destroy sections of the forests.
The burning of the trees deposits minerals into the soil, thus
enriching the top six inches or more of soil. This prepares a
bed for the new growth that will occupy the forest for another
few hundred years.
Scientists know this by studying the layers of earth and
can tell when the layers were formed. They know this is a
cycle of life for forests.
When I heard this, I stopped mourning the loss of the
forests, knowing that new trees will grow and we, as humans,
can help this process and let it happen more naturally if we’re
21. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r xix
careful. I realized the trees were not gone forever. There was a
purpose and wisdom involved here.
My thoughts started to expand to many aspects of life,
including everything I saw. I realized our bodies are made of
materials from this earth and are only temporary. The body
itself is a nutrient for the soil. We don’t want to think of this,
but it’s true.
Thoughts about many things fell into place for me then. I
began to understand the temporary cycles of the earth. They
can be seen in every aspect of our human experience.
Grief comes and goes if we let it flow through and out of
us. Hard times end if we let them go. Letting go allows the
new to flow to us so we can experience new growth.
This clarified for me how we’re visitors, the eternal soul
and spirit, living in our temporary residence of the body.
Everything that’s made from this earth has a life span. But
the soul and spirit are not of the earth, they are eternal. Life is
eternal.

1 Discover the Power Switch
to Your Inner Radar
Each of us has inner radar. We were issued it at birth. It’s
standard equipment. Just like the body and the mind, it
works on automatic and does the minimum that’s
required until you decide to develop it for your unique life
purpose.
Your inner radar works behind the scenes to make things
happen. You don’t realize it at first, but you do feel the results.
You’re struggling with a major conflict, and a resolution comes
out of nowhere, almost as if the problem has simply
disappeared. Or you’re thinking about someone you haven’t
spoken with in a long time, and that person calls you on the
phone or shows up at your door. Or you’re looking for
something that’s hard to find and you just happen to meet the
person who can provide it.
Your inner radar is engaged when you know something
before it happens. You might even say out loud, “déjà vu!”
Or maybe you’ve found yourself saying, “I must have a
guardian angel! If I’d left 10 minutes earlier, I would have been
caught in that accident.” Or you’ve been surprised to arrive at an
important appointment five minutes early when you were
running 20 minutes behind with no hope of getting there on time.
These are all signs your inner radar is hard at work behind
25. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r 3
the scenes, even if you haven’t been aware of it. That’s because
this mechanism is part of who you are, and it’s directed by your
soul, a unique and powerful part of you that most likely has
lain dormant, waiting to be explored.
Your inner radar is powered up all the time, but your ability
to interpret it and respond to it often remains turned off. Maybe
you’ve visited a psychic in the past. If so, you were seeking help
interpreting your inner radar. But who can read it better than
you? That’s why psychics are not always 100 percent accurate –
because they’re interpreting signs, symbols and visions based on
their own knowledge and experience rather than yours.
Your soul helps you find the power switch, activating your
ability to use your inner radar and tap into the psychic side of
yourself. Your soul helps you direct this power. Without clarity,
your inner radar is just raw ability, like electric power that has
no way to get to a wall socket to be used. Your potential goes to
waste and slips away into the air if you don’t figure out a way to
harness it.
Your soul can help you use this tool, acting as a director or
coach to help you use your inner radar to its fullest capacity.
But you have to assign that job to your soul. It waits for you to
make that assignment. In this book, you’ll learn how to do that.
This book is about taking the mystery out of your inner
radar and the soul’s role in using it, and “re-introducing” you to
this internal wisdom very few of us have learned to use. I say re-introducing
because you already know this part of yourself. You
were born knowing it. You’ve experienced it all your life but just
haven’t realized it.
Knowing of your inner radar’s existence and understanding
how to use it are two different things. How do you truly take
advantage of this wellspring of inner wisdom and harness it to
26. 4 L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
make your life better?
We’ll launch your inner radar by:
• Clearing your past, putting your baggage behind you so
you can live free of self-judgment and guilt over things
you’ve done or left undone.
• Taking stock of who you are in the present and learning to
appreciate your value.
• Getting on with creating the future you were meant to
have.
I’ll teach you how to clear blocks and patterns that hold you
prisoner. For instance, you’ll clear away whatever prevents you
from being happy and fulfilled in the present. We’ll uncover
your sensitivity, joy, pleasure and love. You’ll find your inner

techniques and tools in each chapter will support you to grow,
heal and find your way.
Just because your inner radar is working, that doesn’t mean
your soul is engaged. I’ll help you take steps toward working in
partnership with your soul. You’ll explore your soul’s many
facets to discover and live your purpose.
Your soul knows what you’re here to do. It knows your true
potential. Your soul is the director of your life purpose, and you
must have a relationship and connection with this part of
yourself before you can clear the way to fulfill what you’re here
to do and be. When you align with this powerful aspect of
yourself, you’ll discover your own power, strength and direction.
What’s really happening when you
see the signs of your inner radar
If you have a connection and relationship with your soul,
you can better interpret what your inner radar is trying to tell
you in these situations and receive the full benefit of this
knowledge. Consider these possibilities:
• You realize something you learned years ago but never
used is suddenly exactly what you need to know today.
For instance, you learned how to make a mosaic
tabletop even though that wasn’t one of your hobbies
or interests. Twenty years later, at work, one of the
designers asks whether anyone knows anything about
mosaics, and you’re able to supply the knowledge
needed for the project and are acknowledged as an
expert in a new area.
• While driving or walking, you make a wrong turn only to
28. 6 L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
find it got you to the right spot. You end up spotting an
ideal house for sale in a neighborhood you never
noticed before, or the restaurant everyone’s been
talking about but you weren’t sure where to find.
• You understand in hindsight why something happened,
even though at the time you resented it or were confused
by it. You’re offered a new position at work that would
involve relocation away from your aging parents. They
encourage you to take it because they know it’s your
dream job, and you accept but are turned down and it’s
given to someone else. A year later, one of your parents
dies and you realize you wouldn’t have had that time
together if you’d gotten the job.
• Things, resources or people appear just when you realize
you need them. You’re sitting with a group of friends
and you’re talking about something you need, and a
friend you’ve known for 20 years turns out to be an
expert in that area even though you had no idea.
• People from your past contact you right after you’ve
thought about them out of the blue. You see an old
friend in a dream or when you’re sitting to meditate,
and that person sends you an e-mail the next day.
• A book falls off a shelf and it’s just what you need to read
at that time in your life, or you receive a random e-mail
containing a message that’s surprisingly relevant to you
right now. You’re trying to resolve a conflict in your
mind, and at the dentist’s office you pick up a
magazine and turn right to an article that outlines the
answers for you.

2 Stephanie and the Man
with Two Faces:
A Case Study on Life Purpose
Stephanie was a 35-year-old extremely successful financial
analyst. She was a strong-minded, no-nonsense person
who worked hard and played even harder. She had a
history of addiction, abuse and difficult family dynamics, and
her feelings were shut down. The strength of her mind was the
only thing keeping her life under control.
The company she had been working with for five years had
offered her the position of chief financial officer. After two
weeks, she still could not make up her mind what to do. Her
indecision made absolutely no sense to her and she was feeling
desperately conflicted.
From a very young age, Stephanie was driven to please her
father in every way she could. Her father was an accountant
with the dream of being the head of a large company someday,
but physical illness and a short life kept him from fulfilling his
dream. So Stephanie majored in finance in college and set her
goal to become the CFO of a large corporation. Even though her
father had passed away while she was still in college, she kept
her goal and continued striving to live out her father’s dream.
When I met Stephanie, I recognized the challenge she faced
was not a job decision but a life choice. Her past was not hers
but her father’s, and in the present something was happening
30. 8 L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
that was causing her to hesitate about continuing to live her
father’s life. She was being pushed to find her own life and she
was frightened.
My curiosity about how her soul was moving her toward
this change in her life led me to ask her what she did for fun.
Besides traveling and shopping, Stephanie said she loved music.
She became a “Dead Head” when she was 14 years old. The
Grateful Dead’s music was her greatest escape and her spiritual
high. While she was talking about the music and the concerts
she had attended, I saw a spark in the corners of her eyes. But I
sensed that the music was not what was moving her into the
confusion she was currently facing.
I asked whether she attended workshops or seminars and
what kinds of books she liked. Stephanie said she was well-read,
she loved the movies and she was always attending seminars to
keep current in her profession. As she was giving me what
seemed to be a routine account of the seminars she had attended
and the books she had read, she suddenly stopped. Her eyes
turned down and darkened, and she folded her hands on her lap.
Taking in a long breath, she slowly said, “Three weeks ago a
friend of mine took me to a very strange lecture. It was kind of
weird, and I don’t know why I went, but she had an extra ticket
and I had nothing else scheduled. I didn’t get much out of it.”
At that moment Stephanie’s demeanor shifted to one of a
sweet, vulnerable little girl. I asked her to tell me a little about
the program. She just looked at me, unable to express anything
about the experience. This was my cue that we had found the
source of her current crisis.
She quickly regained her composure and said, “Oh, it was a
doctor named Bernie Siegel, and he was talking about love and
healing or something like that. Have you ever heard of him?”
31. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r 9
This helped me see she already had been introduced to the
relationship between energy and physical healing.
Stephanie and I started working together and her life began
to unfold. Three years after our first meeting, Stephanie said she
hardly recognized her life. The following is a recap of her
adventure with her soul. It started with two very distinct issues:
• Her responsibility to live up to her father’s expectations
and dreams.
• An emptiness in her heart that was causing her to question
what her life was really about.
I suggested we consult with her soul about how to come to
terms with the crisis she felt she was facing. Stephanie was
doubtful about my suggestion. She had absolutely no reference
to her soul. She said she had a strong, well-developed mind, she
used it to survive, and she depended on it for her success – and
that she didn’t need her soul for that.
“How can my soul possibly help me if this is the way my
world looks to me?” she asked.
Stephanie described herself as left-brain dominant, which
made her skeptical. She said she always wanted proof. She
described her life purpose in terms of her goals and not a higher
purpose or power. She said she needed for everything to be
concrete and consistent in her life, and that she was driven by
the need to be right and to be in control. Because she valued
precision and order, she said, she followed all rules to the letter of
the law. Everything to her was either black or white with no
room for interpretation. She told me that airy-fairy, touchy-feely
things like the soul and the heart had no place in her world.
Stephanie said she stood in judgment of everyone who
couldn’t keep up with her bright mind and she didn’t think her
soul would approve of what she perceived as an unforgivable
32. 10 L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
weakness in herself. In addition, she said her authority and
success in her profession came from her skill and ability to
think, not to feel. Because of her critical nature, she was
considered by her colleagues to be aggressive and somewhat
ruthless on the job. She told me this was the person she had to
be in order to excel in the male-dominated world of corporate
finance, which was no place for heart or soul.
She did soften a little when she told me she had recently
noticed that the travel, chocolates, shopping, alcohol and drugs
she used for relaxation and release just were not enough to keep
away the loneliness, depression and growing sense of confusion.
For this reason, she said she’d be willing to explore the avenue
of soul connection in her life.
With the help of her soul, we used tools, techniques and
meditations, as well as trust and courage, to help hermove forward.
We divided her exploration into five distinct parts or steps:
1. Create her soul.
2. Finish what she started.
3. Acknowledge her soul’s calling.
4. Recover and discover her “self.”
5. Explore her future.
Creating her soul
Stephanie created a complex soul. Part of it was a strong,
bigger-than-life male she could depend on to be practical,
protective of her high standards and empowered. The other part
of her soul was compassionate, caring, intuitive, wise and
playful. She envisioned her soul as a man around 55 years old.
He wore conservative “casual Friday” clothes. His facial features
were strong, and he had a commanding presence. He always
carried a small black leather briefcase in his right hand. This
33. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r 11
case held his magic hat. It was a large purple wizard hat
adorned with gold and silver suns and moons.
When she called on her soul, the image of the conservative
man would appear first. She would present him with her
inquiries and wait for his response. When he was finished with
his contemplation, he would turn his back, open his case and
place the hat on his head. When he turned back to face
Stephanie, he was transformed into her very own version of the
late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. His wild gray hair and full
frosted beard stuck out all around the hat and face. His eyes were
a bright blue that danced with light. When he laughed, his belly
moved and the moon at the tip of the hat went wild. He wore a
black T-shirt and black jeans. She described him as magical.
Stephanie could always hear a Grateful Dead song playing in
the back of her head when his image appeared. The song would
carry an important message about her inquiry every time. This
is how we communicated and connected with her soul during
most of our beginning work together.
As she progressed in her partnership with her soul, she found
it necessary to evolve her soul’s persona to the call of a raven that
announced her soul’s presence and the image became one of a
beautiful and compassionate yet commanding goddess.
Later, when she began her new career as an alternative
healing practitioner, her soul appeared to her as a circle of
healers and masters that acted as her council in her daily work.
Finishing what she started
Stephanie was facing a very exciting decision in her life. She
had worked hard to get to the current place in her career, yet
she was hesitant about the future. We asked her soul to show
her how to proceed and to give her some insight about her
34. 12 L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
career direction. The picture unfolded for Stephanie as we
employed a series of meditations that explored her past-life
experiences, her future self and a release of her karma. We also
used exercises that helped her reunite with her current self and
explore her life’s journey. You will find those meditations and
exercises in the chapters that follow.
She discovered that her drive to be a CFO for her father also
came from an unfinished commitment from a past life. In that
life, she had been called away from her lifelong dream to have a
business in the city because her father had died and she’d had to
suddenly take over the family farm. She became a slave to her
family obligation and buried her dreams. On her deathbed she
vowed to herself that if she ever got the chance again, she would
find a way to both fulfill her obligations and live her dreams.
This is when her karma, or unfinished past, was born for this life.
Her soul showed her that by going ahead and accepting the
CFO position, she would finish her past obligations and
commitments as well as satisfy her need to please her father. This
made very good sense, and it all seemed quite straightforward to
Stephanie. She said if this karma fromthe past was in fact her path,
purpose and future, she was willing to take it on. She left that day
committed to carry on with the task of working as the CFO.
Two weeks after this discovery Stephanie came back tome in a
full-blown reaction. She walked into the office clearly agitated. She
started pacing, and as she paced she becamemore and more
animated. It looked like she was doing a war dance, flailing her
arms and stomping her feet and whirling around. But nothing was
coming out of hermouth. Finally, after she had danced herself into
a tizzy, her eyes glossy and distant, she stopped, looked right
through me and shrieked, “What ismy problem?! I just can’t settle
down and do the job.”
We had not yet explored with her soul the reason she had
35. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r 13
been hesitant about taking on the CFO position, so I had been
anticipating her return and was excited about addressing the
next piece of her soul picture.
Acknowledging her soul’s calling
Stephanie told me she knew intuitively there had to be more
her soul wanted to share with her than the insight into her past
life and the direction she needed to take to finish up her present
obligations and commitments.
I started this phase of her journey with her soul by asking
her whether she had experienced in her life any of the
following things:
• An unexplainable drive to do something.
• A feeling that she had something really big or important
to do in her life.
• A recurring dream to do, be or create something.
How she responded to those inquiries shaped how we would
proceed. Stephanie told me the only drive she had ever
acknowledged was to be where she was today, a CFO. She said
that was as far as her dreams and drives went. She said if she’d
had any of the above thoughts or had experienced any
interactions with her soul, she probably would have denied
them as irrelevant and just a moment of insanity, a bad trip, a
blip, stress or the product of a hangover.
These statements told me Stephanie did not have the skill,
experience or direction she needed to recognize what her life
was about. She had no connection with her purpose and no
knowledge of her path in life. So we created a way for her to
interact in a comfortable and familiar way with her soul, using
her Grateful Dead connection. Through the music, Stephanie
was able to piece together her picture of her calling and
36. 14 L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
purpose. The techniques we used I will share with you in the
chapters that follow.
Once she had the picture of what her life was about, obstacles
in the form of resistance, denial and judgments started to surface.
She voiced a string of questions, doubts and fears: “How is it
possible? I can’t do that. How do I start? I have to give up
everything I’ve ever done. I’m not ready. I’m scared. This is crazy.”
I let her know it was normal to respond as she had when
faced with a greater picture of her life and its purpose.
Stephanie’s obstacles made her purpose look like an
insurmountable collection of tasks. But with the help of her
soul, she was assured that only fear of the unknown and a lack
of knowledge or trust in herself created her objections and
obstacles. Our work together moved her into an intensive
program of self-discovery that helped her recover abilities, skills
and gifts she had buried or simply not fully developed.
Recovering and discovering her ‘self’
We started with Stephanie’s present definition of herself and
an inventory of her abilities, education and skills. It was apparent
to her from her self-examination that she saw herself as a product
of her home, school and work environments, and aside from her
diversion into the world of the Grateful Dead, she thought
herself to be predictable, uninteresting and somewhat narrow.
Stephanie’s definition of herself and the person I had
experienced her to be during our times together were very
different, so I suggested she take a series of personality and
career development inventories to draw out some of her hidden
strengths and weaknesses. This part of Stephanie’s work took
the longest time, and she felt it was definitely the most
challenging. She wanted to give up a hundred times, but she
37. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r 15
was determined to expand her horizons beyond the narrow
world of her past. To gather a list of possible areas of career
exploration, I suggested we go to a bookstore and get familiar
with what was happening in the world.
Having watched Stephanie’s progress over the past year, I had
a sense of where her soul might take her, so instead of going to
Barnes & Noble or the university bookstore, we went to the local
New Age bookseller. Mind open and ready to jump in, Stephanie
walked through the doors. I could tell by her furrowed brow, her
narrow, deep-set eyes and her clenched fists that we had just
entered unfamiliar territory and she was feeling threatened.
After a couple of deep breaths and a call to her soul for
support, she ventured into the store. It was just before
Christmas, so the store was packed with merchandise: crystals,
essences, fountains, angels jewelry and, yes, books. Four hours
later, we found our way back out the door. She was armed with
three shopping bags full of new treasures, as well as a session
with a tarot card reader, an aura analysis and a stack of fliers for
workshops and seminars.
It took three years for Stephanie to absorb the information
from the new worlds that had opened to her. She attended
classes, joined the Unity Church and always had a stack of 20
books in progress piled next to her bed. She meditated every
day. She visited a chiropractor, tried acupuncture, and
participated in energy work from a variety of alternative
practitioners.
Old concepts, prejudices and judgments started to drop away.
Her lifestyle became what she describes as eclectic bordering on
eccentric. She said she was excited about who she was discovering
herself to be. She saw her unique self beginning to emerge.
She said she took to the energy of crystals like a duck to
38. 16 L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r
water. She was able to find the scientific and medical research
she needed to satisfy her factual, skeptical mind and slowly,
over time, she found that her sensitivity and mystical
experiences became strong and valid. Stephanie no longer
referred to the spiritual world as “foo-foo.”
Exploring her future
With a ritual and a name, Stephanie called her soul present,
and the resulting connection was the voice and the sensation in
her heart. Stephanie learned to engage her soul’s support in her
future plans.
At first she was unable to think clearly about her future. She
did not know how to talk to her soul because she was not sure
about what she really wanted. She was afraid to make a mistake.
She had a faint vision of what she wanted but she didn’t
think it was clear enough to ask her soul to help yet. She
thought she had to have an exact picture before she could ask.
She discovered the path of the future actually unfolds as you
go forward and that you don’t need the whole plan before you
get started. In fact, part of the plan is revealed as you go when
you work with your soul. The process takes time, trust and
commitment.
Stephanie found that through her exploration of her future
with her soul as a friend and partner, she adopted new attitudes
and let go of old agreements. Her fear of the unknown was
replaced by curiosity and excitement that created butterflies in
her belly. Soon her timid, subordinate posture with her soul
turned into a strong relationship.
Stephanie developed a way of relating with her soul that was
concrete and produced results:
• She asked her soul direct questions for clarity.
39. L a u n c h Yo u r I n n e r R a d a r 17
• She stated to her soul her agenda, for what she thought
she wanted.
• She had a plan of action to reach her goals.
• She assigned her soul tasks to fulfill.
• She solicited the power of her soul to do things she could
not do alone.
• She let her soul help her.
A life change
Today Stephanie and I have a wonderful friendship. She is a
very different person from the one I met seven years ago. Her
eyes are deep and her face soft. Her body posture is receptive and
open. She is awesomely compassionate and caring, yet
completely honest and forthcoming. She dresses in playful, wild
colors, and she is always up for a laugh. Her home is full of
warmth, honoring the heart and soul at every turn. Stephanie is a
true gift and has something to offer to everyone she encounters.
When she learned I was writing this book, Stephanie sent
me a note that read: “Maxine, many, many thanks for
introducing me to the greatest friend, love and partner I have
ever known. I celebrate my life!”
