SOLITUDE By Tom, Lola and Matthew
Solitude
‘Solitude’ was a slow start piece with a vast amount of non
verbal communication. As an audience we are introduced to
a flashback halfway through which allows us to be exposed
to why he’s possibly where he is.
Lola
The opening
The opening of ‘Solitude’ creates a tense impact.
Which is initially communicated through the aspect of
piano music. The music holds on to the notes for four
beats at a time, which lets the sound ring out whilst
keeping the audience on the edge of their seats with
the leaping notes within each bar.
In the first instance, the camera angle used is an
extreme close up as seen in the previous slide. The
shot focuses on the actor’s eyes to the right side of the
screen allowing the darkness to creep in around the
subject.
Throughout the first scene, the actor does not blink
once. This intensity creates an element of assertion
and focus for the audience.
Tom
Engaging the audience
Immediately before the camera angle pans to the actor’s left,
the lighting on set changes creating a different sound to the
scene and immersing the audience within the storyline.
As the actor sits up, it becomes clear to us through his
movements that the scene was reversed provoking the
question of why the character was on the floor.
During the opening, there is no dialogue. This choice made
by the director and screenwriters, encourage the audience
to anticipate the storyline and motivations of the character.
The monochrome colour scheme aligns with the numbness
the character portrays in the scene.
Tom
Genre
The film extract is most likely a thriller, this is
signified by the lack of dialogue which leaves the
audience in suspense and leaves them intrigued
into figuring out all the pieces of the story.
The Dutch camera angle as the first shot of the
sequence highlights how twisted this film could
really be.
Throughout, the man in white is mostly presented in
the left hand side of the camera display and the
detective woman is on the right and she is dressed
in grey, this shows they are worlds apart in every
possible way.
Matthew
The role of a thriller is induce strong emotions onto
the viewer such as excitement, anxiety and fear
Props
Within the opening of this piece they have used
a one set location that is extremely simplistic
yet has a huge effect. What is noticed
immediately is that there is only 2 pieces of set
(a bed and a chair). The simplicity of this
juxtaposes the complicated upbringing in which
we are exposed to within the flashback. Which
sets the target audiences expectations, so is a
shock to them when the flashback is finally
presented. This s hugely affected as it was not
seen coming, and has therefore had an impact
on the audience.
Matthew
Props are vital to storytelling, they create a huge
sense of realism and make the set more
naturalistic. And make us believe what they are
trying to communicate
Deeper connotations
.
So looking at the connotations of the whole text. As an audience we are
presented with the color white throughout the whole of the text. As there is
only 2 lines of speech throughout the whole opening, colors and movement
are 2 extremely important factors. The key color that we are presented with,
is the color white. Typically white is associated with innocence, purity and
positivity, but with the use of semiotics and non verbal communication we as
an audience are able to interpret this differently. For example with the use of
the flashback (which actually juxtaposes the whole color scheme that they
have used) they have connoted that the character has faced some sort of
trauma which possibly is why he is where he is today. While the signifier
would be a man in a white shirt, the signified meaning would be someone
who is possibly mentally ill. The reason why this would be a huge binary
opposite, as something so simple and basic as a colour (white), actually
presents such a back story of pain and trauma which is exposed within the
flashback.
lola
The relationship
Looking at the female actress, she has been
placed seated throughout the whole opening in
an all black suit. This immediately stands out in
the predominantly white coloured room, and
asserts a huge dominance and opposes the white
room. overall the 2 characters hugely juxtapose
each other which intrigues the audience, and
makes them want to know more afterwards.
The distance between the characters presents
the awkward and distant relationship in which
they might have, yet when we hear her speak to
him for the first time, the atmosphere changes
and a sense of familiarity is created
Lola
The future narrative?
The future narrative that we thought of could be the slow unfold
of the flashback that we are exposed to a minute into the
opening. There is obviously something going on with the
relationship with his mother, as mentioned by the female
character right at the end when she says “so tell me about your
mother”. This has been purposely scripted to communicate a
key meaning. The dramatic pause of this immediately makes the
audience want to know more and the future story. They have
followed the conventions of a media text perfectly, and created a
gripping piece that is enticing. Following key ideologies of
societies expectations of the genre, and overall the continuing
story could be discovering why he is there, what he has done,
and what his future looks like...
