Dr. Li Wenliang, a Chinese ophthalmologist who
tried to warn fellow practitioners about the potential
outbreak of a virus.
Unfortunately, he was accused of making false claims
and misleading the public.
The doctor had contracted the virus while treating a
glaucoma case (suffering from corona virus) in Wuhan.
Dr. Li passed away on February 7, 2020.

4. Doctor Vs Physician Vs Vaidya
Doctor is a Latin word and later a French one, meaning anyone who is a teacher
- of law, theology, philosophy, as well as medicine.
Latin word physicum or physicus - mean treatment/remedy.
Vaidya – for chikitsa of visham dosh/dhatu.

Ethics deal with the set of principles of right conduct.

Acharya Sushruta gives guidelines for the physician to enter the profession in
Sutra Sthan in 10th chapter vishakhaanupraveshiya adhyaya.
That physician should enter in the profession, who has completed the study of the
texts, understood the interpretations, who has made himself thorough through
practical training and recapitulating the teachings of the science always and
obtained the permission from the king.
18. Right of self-determination, independence and freedom of making own choices
(for patient).
Acharya Charaka explained Vaidyavritti (attitude) which includes:- (ch.su.9/26)
Friendliness (Maitri), & Compassion toward the diseased (Karunya arteshu),
Attachment to the remediable (Shakye priti)
Indifference to those who are moving toward the end (Upekshanam).
19. Justice - all person in the society should be treated fairly and equally for allocation
of resources.
Acharya Sushruta advocates white clothes (Shuklavastra) which symbolizes
cleanliness and similarity to all. Su.Su.10/3.

20. Declaration by AYUSH PRACTITIONERS
Persons applying for registration with State Medical Council or Board/Central
Council of Indian Medicine shall forward along with his application form the
following declaration duly signed by him, namely :—
(i) I solemnly pledge myself to consecrate my life to the service of humanity.
(ii) Even, under threat, I shall not use my knowledge contrary to the laws of humanity.
(iii) I shall maintain the utmost respect for human life from the time of conception.
(iv) I shall not permit consideration of religion, nationality, race, party politics or social standing to
intervene between my duty and my patient.
(v) I shall practise my profession with consicience and dignity.
(vi) The health of my patient shall be my first consideration.
(vii) shall respect the secrets which are confined in me.
(viii) I shall give to my teachers the respect and gratitude which is their due.
(ix) I shall maintain by all means in my power, the honour and noble tradition of medical profession.
(x) I shall treat my colleagues as my brothers.
(xi) I shall maintain the standards of professional conduct and etiquette and observe the code of
ethics, laid down in these regulations.

22. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Stay healthy / maintain your health
Follow ayurvedic principles as much as possible
Study, update and upgrade regularly for the rest of your working life as a doctor
Set goals and monitor your actions for it
Be compassionate and loose the prejudice
Do not use your profession for any physical, political, religious, financial or moral
gains.
Be hygienic at all times.
23. DRESS AND DEMEANOUR
Wear a smart, sensitive and moderate dress.
Exposing dresses distract patients, impede communication and create offence.
Tie back long hair and keep jewellery simple.
White coats represents – professionalism, identification and barrier to infection.
Always wear a name badge which can be read easily.
24. Communication skills
Consultation is meeting of two experts: physician and patient
Develop excellent communication skills for assessing patient problem accurately.
Poor communication skills may lead to medicolegal vulnerability.
Always respect the skills and contributions of your colleagues.
Politeness in words and humbleness in actions is the key for becoming a liked
doctor.
25. Expectations
Media stereotypes of doctors involves miraculous intuitions, rare
diagnosis and performance of dramatic life saving interventions.
REALITY IS DIFFERENT
Medicine often involves seeing and treating patients with common
conditions and chronic diseases where we can provide palliation or
simply witness to patients suffering.
D’nt be head strong to aplologize for any mistakes to patients.
26. CONCLUSION
● Goal of Physician/Vaidya - curing those afflicted by diseases and protecting
those who are healthy.
● Attitude of the physician - Friendliness, compassion toward the patient,
attachment to the remediable and indifference to those who are moving
toward end. Wearing white clothes and adopting the code of good conduct.
● Qualities of good physician - Should be excellent in theory and practical
knowledge, dexterity, cleanliness are the major qualities.
● Manner of medical practices -First diagnose the disease and then decide
the treatment.

Physicians remain well-respected in society .
We have enormous influence on lives and great authority as well.
As a budding doctor, we have to uphold ethical standards, improve the lives
of your patients, and be the best doctor, and person, that we can.
